Best travel jackets with hidden pockets for men, men's scottevest travel jacket essential 2.0.

SCOTTeVEST Essential 2.0 Jacket for Men - 24 Hidden Pockets & Detachable Sleeves - Coat for Travel & More (Sand, X-Large Tall)

While it’s great to have everything within reach, the SCOTTeVEST Travel Jacket pays special attention to weight management . That way, even if you have all  25 inner and outer pockets full , you won’t feel lopsided or bulky. Often an issue with this kind of jacket.

The  cotton blend material  keeps this jacket light and airy and the  Teflon treatment makes it water and stain-resistant . It also has  detachable sleeves  for a hotter climate, but it doesn’t have a hood . That means you better reserve one of those pockets for a small umbrella in case it rains.

The organization is good with this jacket despite the many compartments. Outside, there are two large chest pockets with hidden zippers at the top. Inside, a padded pocket can hold an iPad or tablet and a special pocket is fitted with RFID blockers to secure against credit card and data theft.

Two large hand-warmer pockets can also hold a water bottle and extendable/detachable key-holder in the right pocket and ZIP-PIP (zippered pocket-in-pocket) to keep items segregated in the left pocket. There are two interior clear touch pockets so you can use touchscreen devices without taking them out, and several smaller pockets for sunglasses, IDs, pens, and travel documents.

  • Excellent weight management and organization
  • Many pockets specific to different important items
  • Water and stain-resistant

SCOTTeVEST Men's Pack Windbreaker Jacket with 19 Pockets

SCOTTeVEST Pack Windbreaker Jacket for Men - 19 Hidden Pockets - Lightweight Water Repellent Coat for Travel & More

The SCOTTeVest Windbreaker Travel Jacket is one of the most affordable options from SOTTeVEST. Which might explain why it’s so popular. And you know you are getting a great travel jacket. After all, they are the brand for travel jackets with pockets!

This model comes with 19 pockets, 14 interiors, and 5 exteriors. Of course, that means you have a spot for just about anything. From your pen and sunglasses to your tablet and phone. I won’t go into detail on all 19, you can read it on their website.

It’s made from 100% Polyester and is also quite a bit lighter than some of the others SCOTTeVest offer. It is 1.2 lbs, so easy to carry around with you in case of a change of weather. It also packs into its own pocket, so it’s easy to stash in a backpack – just in case!

  • Lightweight and durable
  • 19 pockets for everything you carry
  • Reasonable price for such a jacket
  • Not great for really cold weather
  • No hood or removable sleeves
  • Material: 100% Polyester

VERSATYL Unisex Travel Jacket with 18 Pockets

VERSATYL Men's Lightweight Travel Jacket with 18 Pockets and 29 Features – Hooded, Water-Resistant, Hidden Pocket, Full Sleeves, Packable, Full-Zip Windbreaker Coat (Grey and Black, S)

The Versatyl Unisex Travel Jacket is another decent option when you don’t like the   SOTTeVEST options. It’s a little on the heavy side, but still waterproof so will keep your gear dry while you are out and about. There is also a warm hood, and some slide-out hand warmers, so if you are going somewhere cold, this might be a great option.

The biggest highlight of this jacket aside from its reasonably stylish look is the 18 pockets you get. Yes, that’s right – 18! From Napoleon-style chest pockets for things, you want close by to all sorts of internal pockets for more secure items. There are also some less handy pockets like those on the forearm, but you might still find a use for them.

They have also thought about the most essential items like your phone, wallet, passport, and documents. And, there is a handy loop for hanging your wired headphones on the upper inside of the jacket, for when you aren’t listening to your tunes on the go.

Just one major thing to be aware of when purchasing this softshell jacket – it runs small, so grab one size up otherwise you might be busting out of it! Although the zippers are quality YKK affairs, you don’t want to break them.

  • Pull-out warmer sleeves
  • Ideal for different climates
  • Sleeves are longer than usual sizes and fits
  • Hidden Pockets: 18

SCOTTeVEST Women's Chloe Hoodie Jacket

SCOTTeVEST Chloe Glow Hoodie for Women - 18 Hidden Pockets - Lightweight Zip Up Sweatshirt for Travel & More

For winter travelers , the SCOTTeVEST Women’s Chloe Hoodie Jacket will keep you  warm and cozy with a heavyweight fleece . It’s made with  100% polyester and is a lightweight way to keep warm while you are traveling .

It has a decent number of pockets  14 to be exact. This means there is plenty of space for all your gadgets, gizmos, and personal items. There are also a couple of external hand-warming pockets and one specifically for change.

The addition of a hood on this particular travel jacket means that it adds that extra warmth when things get cold or windy. This is always a bonus when you are out for the day in a foreign city and don’t want to go back to grab another sweater.

And, unlike a lot of the other jackets from SCOTTeVest, this one is super affordable at just under $100.

  • Warm layer for on the go
  • Hood gives extra warm
  • Enough pockets for all your everyday travel items
  • Might need an additional rain jacket with you
  • Pockets: 14

SCOTTeVEST Women's Trench Coat

The SCOTTeVEST Women’s Trench Coat is a great addition to any wardrobe. The  classic style  is great for any travel but also  works for daily wear whether casual or business .

With the longer garment than a jacket, the coat’s  18 pockets  are larger, easier to access, and can hold a lot more items equivalent to a travel purse. While it’s still not the best replacement for a bag altogether, it significantly lessens the number of items you have in your purse or carry-on.

As with all SCOTTeVEST garments, the  Weight Management System  keeps the coat from being too heavy or bulky. Add to that the  sleek lines and the belt  and you will have a slimming shape even if your pockets are full.

The coat is  water and stain-resistant , so you can walk through a downpour and keep yourself and your gadgets dry. The length of the coat also offers more protection than a jacket.

Despite its construction and material, it’s still  machine washable  making it easy to maintain and store. Unfortunately, it  doesn’t come with a hood .

Also, knowing where you put your phone can be a challenge at first because  some pockets are too deep  and will be more troublesome than convenient.

  • Weather-resistant
  • Classic style and design
  • Larger pockets
  • Some pockets are too deep
  • Material: DWR Nano poly fabric
  • Pockets: 18

Baubax Travel Jacket

Baubax Travel Jacket - Bomber - Female - Black - Small

The Baubax Travel Jacket is a startup hit , crowdsourcing a total of $9.2 million on Kickstarter and $11.5 million on Indiegogo On Demand.

It comes in  four styles : windbreaker, sweatshirt, blazer, and bomber jacket. Of all the versions, the Bomber jacket is the most well designed, does NOT look like a travel jacket, and will fit any urban or adventure setting.

It  is heavier than the other styles , but it’s  thicker and sturdier  and will hold up well even in cold climates.

It’s  built with lots of features and pockets  to keep you from having to dig into your bag the whole time. The jacket has nine utility pockets (six of which are hidden), an attached pen stylus, built-in gloves, and hand warmers, and a built-in neck pillow and eye mask. Yes, it has everything!

Sizes run small  for Bomber jackets, so make sure you get the measurements right. The material doesn’t stretch, but it’s machine washable.

  • Stylish design
  • Lots of built-in features
  • Inconsistent sizing

What to look for in a Travel Jacket or Vest

The main point of finding a jacket with hidden pockets is fitting everything you need inside. More pockets are not necessarily better. Some pockets are too small to be functional. Too many pockets will also just give you a more difficult time looking for what you need. Too few, on the other hand, leaves you with items that have no place in the jacket.

There are some pockets with plastic panels so you can see your phone without taking it out. They are super-handy, but come at a price, If you need to machine wash or toss the jacket in the dryer, this plastic panel can melt. So, be careful.

Also, make sure that closures are secure so your items don’t accidentally fall out of the jacket. This could just mean a zipper, or similar, but have a think about what you are going to put where, and how secure (in terms of falling out) it is going to be.

The jackets in this review are made from a variety of materials, so it pays to know what you want it to do, in terms of warmth or weather, before you buy it.

Not all travel jackets are water-resistant or waterproof. For example, there are travel jackets made like a sweater, so it will keep you warm but not dry. So, you will need another one to go over the top if it rains (or you can simply use an umbrella)

Waterproof jackets will keep you dry but can be too hot if you’ll be traveling to warmer climates or doing lots of exercises. It pays to be flexible in what you wear when traveling, so keep layering in mind.

A lot of jackets have hoods, which can be great against the wind or to sleep in a plane. But they are not a style everyone likes, as they are quite casual.

Others have built-in features like pillows and eye masks, but can be too bulky when not in use. So, don’t overdo it on the features unless you really need them. Find a design that fits your style of travel the best.

If you don’t need a hood, then hoodless jackets can still be a great option. And bells and whistles are often more hassles than they are worth. Stick with what you need, and focus on the security features that are going to protect your most important possessions.

The Best Travel Jacket For You

There are two reasons why you are looking for a travel jacket with lots of pockets: convenience and fewer baggage fees.

Travel jackets are similar in many ways, but the way these pockets are designed and secured makes all the difference. The best lookout when choosing your jacket is how easy it will be for you to get your stuff out of the pockets and, of course, how much protection you can get from the climate.

For men, the  Bombax Travel Jacket  has everything you need. The built-in pillow and eye mask are great for long-haul flights or emergency naps. It has enough pockets to store your things, and it’s weather-resistant to protect you from rain and cold weather. The manly and modern design also makes you look stylish wherever you go.

For women, the  SCOTTeVESTJacket   is light, functional, and versatile. It has detachable sleeves should you find things getting a little hot, and it has ingenious pockets to keep everything you need close to you. It’s also very easy to pack thanks to its lightweight material if you decide not to use it sometime during your trip.

The Best Jackets With Hidden Pockets for Men and Women

Traveling can be a nightmare when you’re trying to juggle a rolling bag, a backpack, a shoulder bag that keeps falling off because of said backpack, and who knows what else. (A duty-free shopping bag, perhaps?) Then you’ve got to haul it all from the airport to the hotel, then maybe to another hotel, then maybe on and off a tour bus. It’s not exactly relaxing, and it’s definitely not convenient. Well, here’s an idea: haul your camera, keys, phone, magazine, books, and travel documents in a jacket instead.

These jackets are designed with multiple pockets to make your carry-on situation a breeze. Even if you’re not interested in carrying all your stuff in your coat, these hidden pockets add extra security when you’re traveling to a new country or big city. Rather than keeping your phone in your back pocket or dangling a purse around, secure it in a zippered internal pocket, away from people who might be looking for an easy theft. Ready to make the switch? These are the best jackets with hidden pockets.

The jacket also has retractable gloves in the sleeves and a removable hood. Even better, it’s compact: the jacket can fold into itself, so it won’t take up precious cargo space in your carry-on. It runs small, so reviewers suggest ordering at least one size larger than usual.

Pros: Wrinkle-free and water-resistant (but not waterproof); has its own satchel Cons: Jacket runs small—read sizing instructions carefully Material: Cotton and polyester Number of pockets: 18

AyeGear V26 Vest with 26 Pockets.

AyeGear V26 Vest with 26 Pockets

Technically this is a vest , not a jacket, but with 26 pockets we would be remiss not to add it to the list. A few features make this option stand out: two pockets have a touch-sensitive surface, so you can use your phone without taking it out (although we probably wouldn’t try texting with it); it’s waterproof and easy to layer; two layers of fabric make it extra-durable. The vest says it can be used as its own carry-on, and one reviewer put it to the test, stuffing an entire backpack’s worth of gear in his vest before boarding a flight.

Pros: Waterproof Cons: Not especially breathable, according to reviewers Material: Unclear—but whatever it is, it’s waterproof! Number of pockets: 26

Atlas Stretch Hooded Jacket.

Eddie Bauer Atlas Stretch Hooded Jacket

Though it doesn’t have nearly as many pockets as the first two, this water-repellent jacket from Eddie Bauer still does a great job with seven exterior pockets and one hidden interior pocket designed for travel documents. The hood can be stored by rolling it and securing it with a Velcro strap, and a hem cord helps seal it over the hips. Also excellent: it’s machine washable (hallelujah!). It does fit slimmer than some of the other options on the list, but also has two-way stretch for comfort. If you like an athletic look, go for this one.

Pros: Slim fit, accurate sizing Cons: Fewer pockets than some other options Material: Nylon and spandex Number of pockets: 8

SocttEVest T5 Sport Coat.

ScotteVest T5 Sport Coat

Maybe the adventure-chic look isn’t quite your style and you need something functional that can also be taken to a board room. Sound like you? Consider ScotteVest’s T5 Sport Coat , which has 19 pockets for a camera, tablet (up to 12.9 inches), phone, four pens, and an RFID-blocking pocket (which can help prevent identity theft). Reviewers say it’s a bit warmer than a hoodie, so great for moderate weather conditions or an air-conditioned office. Most people like the fit right out of the box, though it’s also easy to tailor.

Pros: Sleek, functional, and spacious Cons: Some reviewers complained that the shoulders and chest were too tight Material: Polyester, rayon, and spandex Number of pockets: 19

Best Women’s Jackets With Hidden Pockets

Pack Windbreaker- Women's.

ScotteVest Pack Windbreaker

Another option from ScotteVest, this one is a windbreaker designed specifically for women (so a more flattering shape than the men’s version) but still comes with 19 super-useful pockets—14 of which are hidden in the interior. Interior pockets include pouches for cameras, tablets, travel documents, glasses and IDs. Both water and stain resistant, the jacket is super-duper light (literally less than a pound!) Also nice: the hood folds into itself, and in addition to grey and navy, the jacket comes in red. Reviewers have said it’s even eliminated the need for a purse, although it can get a little bulky when you’ve loaded it to the brim.

Pros: Folds into its own pocket, super lightweight Cons: Reviewers say if you plan to layer or don’t like a snug fit, size up Material: Polyester Number of pockets: 19

BOMBAX Women Travel Jacket 10 Pocket Flight Bomber.

Bombax Women Travel Jacket 10 Pocket Bomber

This bomber-style jacket has some great travel features before we even get to the pockets bit. First, it has a detachable neck pillow that you can inflate on the go, built-in fingerless gloves and a zipper that doubles as a pen or stylus. As far as pockets, it’s got the standard setup for a tablet and phone, but it’s also got a stand-up drink pocket, so you can stash a beer or coffee when you need your hands free. And it’s machine-washable, so it’s easy to take care of on the go. It’s a lot more stylish than the other picks, too (not that we’re choosing favorites).

Pros: Stylish, with extra travel features Cons: Both the jackets and the pockets themselves run small Material: Cotton and polyester Number of pockets: 10

Levi's Women's Lightweight Cotton Hooded Anorak Jacket.

Levi's Women's Lightweight Cotton Hooded Anorak Jacket

Four exterior pockets and two interior pockets make this the jacket with the smallest number of hidden storage spots on the list, but it’s still more than enough to keep your carry-on weight down and to skip a bag while sightseeing. The hood can be snapped on and off and sleeves can be rolled for warmer weather. It’s breathable but a nice layer on mild days (50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit) according to reviewers. Most say that the fit is relaxed enough that you can fit another sweater underneath, too, if it’s a little colder.

Pros: Soft, comfortable fabric; cinchable waste Cons: Some reviewers think the shoulders fit a bit tight; not all colors are true to the pictures Material: Cotton Number of pockets: 6

ExOfficio Women's Round Trip Jacket.

ExOfficio Women's Round Trip Jacket

This zip-up jacket (the buttons are just for show) has an interior six-pocket system, including a designated phone pocket (which admittedly runs too small for Plus models of the iPhone) and a spot for a smaller iPad or tablet. The cinching waist helps to tailor the jacket to your exact size, and it’s loose enough to fit a sweater underneath. The fabric is coated with a water-resistant finish, too, so you can take it out in light rain. If you’ve got shorter arms, beware that reviewers say the jacket’s sleeves run long and aren’t great for rolling, so you may need to visit a tailor.

Pros: Great internal organization, stylish Cons: Mixed reviews about how well the jacket releases wrinkles, the sleeves run long, and reviewers say it attracts lint Material: Nylon Number of pockets: 10

ScottEVest The Rhonda.

ScotteVest Women’s The Rhonda

Another winner from ScotteVest, this coat reaches down over the thighs for chillier days (though it’s not waterproof, so have an umbrella handy…maybe in one of your many pockets!). The Rhonda has 20 pockets, a removable extendable key holder and a pocket that even functions as a bottle holder. Better yet, the coat doesn’t look bulky unless you really overfill the pockets, so carrying your stuff won’t ruin the silhouette. (One reviewer has taken to calling it her “gadget jacket.”) The fabric is also super soft. You can stow the hood when you don’t need it, it comes in three earth-toned colors to match your wardrobe, and sizes go up to 3XXL.

Pros: Soft, comfy, nice silhouette even when full Cons: Not everyone thinks it fits true to size Material: Polyester Number of pockets: 18

Readers say the Eddie Bauer Waterproof Charly Jacket has durable but lightweight fabric

While a jacket may look really cute, you’ll need to make sure it’s made of the right fabric to keep you warm and protected from the elements.

Synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon are fantastic materials for travel jackets, as they’re made to be extremely durable yet lightweight, breathable, and comfy. They pack well, won’t wrinkle, and are overall super low maintenance yet highly practical. They’re also water-resistant, and many nylon or polyester options will be made to be fully waterproof, so if you’re traveling to a rainy destination, these kinds of materials are ideal.

The Columbia Carson Pass II Winter Jacket has warmth without the bulk! (Read our review of this jacket)

If you’re heading to a cold climate, you might want to look for these materials, too, but in a puffer style, which adds cozy insulation. You could also opt for a wool coat for your winter travels. Wool is a fantastic material that’s super soft, warm, breathable, and great at regulating your temperature so you won’t overheat, will keep you feeling dry and fresh and looks super chic!

If you’re traveling to a warmer climate, you’ll want to keep things lightweight with fabrics like cotton, rayon, or polyester. A jean jacket, a sweatshirt, or a light trench coat are some of the best lightweight jacket women’s styles that’ll give you that extra bit of warmth without being too hot or bulky.

Organizational Pockets

While you’re out seeing the sights and adventuring at your destination, keeping your travel essentials organized and accessible is important. Even with a great travel purse, there are some things you may want to have at the ready, stored in a secure travel jacket pocket . There may also be those days when you want to travel light and not carry a bag.

So, when searching for the perfect travel jacket, keep those pockets in mind! Look for pockets that have some sort of zippered or button closure, and bonus points for hidden pockets or interior pockets! That way, your belongings are kept extra safe from pickpocketing or simply falling out.

This Icebreaker Hoodie has zippered pockets and internal ones to hold items!

Having a travel jacket with hidden pockets is super convenient for storing your phone, as it’ll be out of sight when not in use but can be grabbed in a flash to snap that perfect photo. Secure jacket pockets are also great for storing things like your cash, credit cards, or hotel access card. Close to your body and easy to reach, you’ll be able to check in on these items and make sure they’re safe and sound throughout the day.

Outer pockets are handy for those less valuable but still important essentials like lip balm, sunglasses, or gloves.

The Quince Water-Resistant Trench is classic and perfect for Europe!

There are SO many great styles of lightweight women’s jackets to choose from that are functional for travel, from leather jackets to trench coats to down parkas.

Readers share their go-to’s. One says, “I have several trench coats I travel with. They are great three seasons of the year and are adjustable to all kinds of weather.” Another reader shares, “I am loving my rain jacket that I just got! Cuts the wind, can layer if needed, and is cute.” And another TFG reports, “I like traveling with a leather jacket and a lightweight puffer with a hood to go over it. That way, if it’s a little warmer in the afternoon, the leather jacket is enough. The puffer can live in its own compressed bag for easy traveling.”

A trendy Faux-Leather Jacket can add chic and edge to a plain outfit!

For fall, faux-leather jackets make a great alternative to a wool or trench. Denim jackets are amazing options for spring and summer travels or layering with sweaters in the fall. Fleece jackets and hoodies are easy to pack and are perfect for layering under a heavier coat or wearing over a tee on a brisk morning.

Because you’ll likely only bring one or two jackets along, they need to be the most versatile item! Look for something that not only meets your needs in terms of weather and activities but also that you’ll want to wear repeatedly and that you’ll be happy seeing in your photos!

The Ibex Merino Wool Aire Jacket packs small into its own interior chest pocket and is warm but lightweight—I take it with me everywhere!

Packability

When it comes to packability, a lightweight women’s jackets for travelling that are easy to store is ideal, but that definitely doesn’t mean you should skimp on warmth or comfort! In winter, to save weight without compromising warmth, opt for insulated jackets made of down or down-alternative, which weigh very little but will keep you toasty.

Most readers like to make it easy by wearing their heaviest jacket on the flight and packing any additional jackets in their luggage. This is especially useful if you need to bring along a parka or some type of winter coat. Plus, boarding with a big, cozy jacket makes a great blanket or pillow, and it’ll be ready to snuggle into when you land at your destination.

If you want to pack a jacket in your luggage, a packing cube will help you save tons of space in your suitcase by compressing your clothes. And as a bonus, it’ll keep it folded neatly and looking nice when you pull it out!

This Outdoor Ventures Fleece-Lined Jacket has a detachable hood and adjustable waistband and hem!

Extra Features

Other features you’ll want to look for in a lightweight jacket for travel are versatile and timeless styles that will not only go with all of your clothing options, but that’s something you’ll love wearing for years to come. You’ll also want to go for fabrics that are easy to clean and care for. And wrinkle-free materials or materials that easily shake out and look presentable are a huge plus when traveling, as well.

If you need a waterproof travel jacket , make sure that not only will the shell repel water but that the jacket has waterproof seams and sealed cuffs so that bits of water don’t trickle in throughout the day.

Removable and adjustable features are always a plus, too. A hood will be super cozy on a rainy or windy day, but it’s nice to have the option of taking off in milder weather. An adjustable waist or a removable belt is also a plus, as they can give you the perfect, customized fit, either adding a feminine shape or allowing for extra room when layering.

Other Factors When Selecting a Travel Jacket Womens Style

Another major factor to consider when planning which womens travel jackets to pack is, of course, the weather at your destination. You should always be sure to check the weather forecast leading up to your trip so you can know roughly what temperatures and conditions to expect. That way, you’ll be prepared for unexpected rain showers on a summer’s day in NYC or an unexpectedly warm week on a fall trip to London.

Also, consider your activities. One reader makes a great point, sharing, “If you’re walking around in the sun on a cold day, a light puffer jacket may be fine. But if you’re sitting in the shade watching a sporting event for several hours, you will need more than that.” Another says that choosing a jacket “depends on the occasion or activity, not just the temperature. At 50 degrees, I might be in a denim jacket, a leather jacket, a long open coat, or just a cardigan. If I’m hiking, it’d be a mid-layer with a rain jacket in my backpack.”

The SCOTTeVest Chloe Hoodie has 14 hidden pockets!

Another thing to consider is the destination and whether theft is a concern there. If you’re traveling to a city where pickpocketing is more common, you may want to consider a jacket with anti-theft features, like hidden pockets. One reader agrees, saying, “We’ve been using the SCOTTeVEST jackets  with lots of pockets for several years for the flights over and back from trips. Wallets, passports, phone, and any foreign currency we’re carrying all go in it, and it isn’t really bulky or heavy. We more comfortable knowing that the really important stuff isn’t going to be left behind or stolen.”

Here’s a roundup of the best money belts for travel so you can theft-proof your gear!

Such a great comprehensive list of jackets. It’s hard to figure out easy to jackets that are also versatile. Going to be looking at some of these on the list for upcoming jacket weather season

Monkeydevil

For a recent carry-on only trip to Italy where temps were in the 90s every day, I needed a very lightweight rain jacket “just in case”….I ended up with a stretchy, ultra lightweight jacket from Vuori. (Bought at REI) I never ended up needing it, but since I got back I’ve used it a time it two and I really like it. Because of the stretch fabric, it doesn’t bind. It rolls down into a tiny package that I tuck into the hood (wish it had a little attached stuff sack) and it’s water repellent (not waterproof). I didn’t find it created the dreaded sauna effect so, for me, it’s a winner!

Alex

Hi Diane, thank you for sharing your winner jacket with us! Hope you had an incredible time in Italy!

Lin W

Love all the ideas and products

I’ve been looking forward to buying the Kenya jacket for a while. Finally went to the Anatomie site & am so sad to discover they changed the zippers (yes, I now realize I could have found that out from reading further on your blog/comments). Such a bummer – I hope they go back to the non-shiny zips. I did buy the Skyler pants and absolutely love them; thank you for your recommendations!

Juliana

Hi Alex and team! I am a big fan of your recommendations… and I’m excited to try Anatomie for my future travels. Thank you!

Sue Sohi

Hello, I tried your link for getting 15% on Anatomie Kenya Jacket, but currently it is not working. Thanks Sue

Hi Sue, thank you for letting us know. Could you try using this code instead TFG15 and see if this works.

I am really sorry about this.

Laura Hamilton

Great review! I love mine.

I was about to treat myself to a new Kenya jacket but no banana.

To me the new zippers make the jacket look cheap and nasty. So I’m hanging onto my old one. No sale. A more muted tone would have worked, but these zippers just look cheap to me – in the photos anyway.

Please pass on the feedback to Anatomie – there’s no reason why they can’t offer both options.

Thank you for taking the time to share your review with us Laura ?

Harriet Ackerman

Does this jacket have a hood?

Hi Harriet, unfortunately it doesn’t. If you are searching for a rain jacket with a hood, these are the most popular jackets according to our readers: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/rain-jackets-for-women/ Hope this helps!

Nancy

I see there is the Kenya you recommended, but also a fleece lined version (with gunmetal zippers!). Have you tried the fleece version? I’d love to have a jacket that can be worn in the high desert at night as well as a day by the coast over a tshirt. I’m from the midwest, and we only have about 2-3 weeks of mild cold temps before winter jackets have to kick in. I’ve never known how to shop for jackets!

Hi Nancy, thank you for reaching out! Yes I have tried the fleece jacket. For overall travel (or everyday wear), the regular one is awesome as you can just throw it in your bag perfect for warm to mild weather. Super cute and versatile. The fleece is good for cooler weather. Hope this helps!

Emily Janssens

Yeah if it still looked exactly like yours I’d fork over the cash. But I hate shiny zippers so that is not going to fly. Hope they bring out a new Kenya version with gunmetal zippers (I found three Kenya jackets on their site and the ones with gunmetal are the fleece lined version but they only come in black still and I have too much black already in my wardrobe so really want grey).

Aside from the shiny zip and the darker grey colour (in the new version the gray is darker than yours) it would be the perfect travel jacket indeed.

Hi Emily, this change is very disappointing as this was one of my favorite features. ? Fingers crossed for the future!

Kim

On Anatomie’s website the grey Kenya jacket looks a lot darker than yours. Is it the same color or did they change it?

Hi Kim, the jacket I have looks like the grey in the cover image. To me, when I wear it, it looks more grey than another color. One thing to note is that they’ve recently changed the zippers on the Kenya Jacket, which is disappointing as this was one of my favorite features. The jacket in the post worn by the model, not me, is green. (The grey was sold out at the time we published the post.) Hope this helps.

Michele

Are there any plus size options?

Hi Michele, sadly this does not come in plus sizes. However some TFG readers have shared some alternatives to the Kenya jacket that offer a range of clothing sizes including regular, tall, petite, and plus sizes, too.

Jacket from L.L Bean: https://bit.ly/3IspShi WenVen Jacket (plus it comes with a hood): https://amzn.to/3JCqOkt Levi’s: https://amzn.to/3JMwaJS

Hope this helps you in your search!

Emma

Now that the zips look too shiny, can you recommend an alternative to this jacket please? Ideally one that’s not so expensive too…! Thanks.

Hi Emma, have a look one of our other jacket articles for some alternative suggestions, you can find them here: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/travel-jackets/ Hope you find a jacket you like!

Lara

Hi Friends, I bought the Anatomie Kenya Jacket (the Small size) in grey and the Anatomie Skylar pants in black (I ordered xs and waited too long to return. I bought the Skylar olive green pants on sale in Small and they are perfect!!! I love love the jacket and do wish it came with the gunmetal zippers instead of the silver zippers, I bring the jacket every trip and wear it a lot here in the SF Bay Area as well!

Hi Lara, that is amazing to hear, so pleased to hear you love the jacket!!! Their style and quality is tough to beat. Happy travels! ?

Kelly

Hi Alex. I do love the looks of the jacket and pants. However, do you have a more affordable option? Not everyone can or wants to spend that much money on clothes.

Denise

Alex, can you tell me about that crossbody bag you’re carrying? Thank you

Hi Denise, it is the the Travelon anti-theft classic messenger bag, featured here: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/top-5-anti-theft-travel-bags-for-women-best-sellers/ . I like the bag’s neutral color, easy to wear style, and safety features. Hope this helps! 🙂

Bess

Sorry, also meant to ask you if your grey color of Kenya jacket is the same grey color that’s available on the Anatomie site, because the grey on the site looks almost chocolate brown?

Alex, depending on the photo, your Anatomie Kenya jacket looks grey, khaki and a lite shade of army green. Which one of those shades does it look like most in real life. I will purchase via link on your site 🙂

Hi Bess, the Kenya Jacket looks like the grey in the cover image. To me, when I wear it, it looks more grey than another color. One thing to note is that they’ve recently changed the zippers on the Kenya Jacket, which is disappointing as this was one of my favorite features. In answer to your second question, the jacket in the post worn by the model, not me, is green. (The grey was sold out at the time we published the post.). Hope this helps! 🙂

Diane

What kind of shoes are you wearing? I love them.

Hi Diane, thank you for your question! I wore the Skechers featured at the top of this post: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/best-slip-on-sneakers/ Hope this helps! 🙂

Heidi

I love Anatomie. I have one of their jackets now and adore it. I’ve had my eye on the Lady Lugano for a while but can’t yet justify the price when I have so many other jackets. It’s beautiful though. Sigh. 🙂

alex

Their style and quality is tough to beat. Thanks for commenting!

CrifJohnson

Awesome jackets and beautiful colors as well. Loved it!

When preparing for a trip, you always have to account for whatever kind of weather might come your way – which, in most cases, means packing a jacket just in case. Of course, space in your luggage is precious, and the bulk of a jacket may be more than what you want to pack. That's why many travelers seek out packable jackets that fold down compactly.

Choosing a packable jacket doesn't mean you have to sacrifice warmth, though – there are plenty of options that will keep you warm without the bulk. Read on to find the best packable jackets based on recommendations from travel experts as well as consumer ratings and reviews across a variety of retail sites.

There's no contest when it comes to the best packable jacket: The Patagonia Nano Puff is the tried-and-true choice for travel experts. "The warmth-to-weight ratio on this jacket is unmatched. It keeps me warm in cool temperatures or on a cold plane without making me overheat," says Lauren Maternowski, who has tried dozens of packable jackets in her role as managing editor at Pack Hacker. "And, if I add a few warm layers underneath, it adds enough warmth to feel comfortable in winter climates."

The jacket barely takes up any luggage space, either. "It compresses down to the size of a sandwich bag in its own interior pocket," says Melissa McGibbon, destinations editor at Powder. "I also appreciate that it's sustainably produced and lasts for years."

The Patagonia Nano Puff Jacket is available in a variety of men's and women's sizes as well as with a hood (the Patagonia Nano Puff Hoody , McGibbon's personal favorite).

Price: $239 or less

Arc'teryx Atom LT Jacket in pink against white background.

Many travel writers recommend Arc'teryx for its packable jackets like the Cerium and – if you're looking for something particularly lightweight – the Atom LT. Though light, this packable jacket retains heat thanks to its synthetic insulation. It also protects from the elements with a water-resistant shell, making it suitable for a variety of climates.

In addition to the design, the overall fit of this jacket earns high praise. "One of my favorite things about the Atom LT is its fit and comfort," says travel blogger Ethan Williams of Traveling Gossip. "It's not too tight, allowing room for layering, but still has a flattering, streamlined design." He notes that the side panels are made of a breathable, stretchy material, which increases mobility.

If you're looking for a jacket with a hood, there's also the Atom LT Hoody . While both men's and women's sizes are available, note that the women's jacket is now called the Atom (without the LT). Some stores may still advertise it as the Atom LT, however.

Price: $280 or less

Women's Cotopaxi Fuego Hooded Down Jacket in "Maritime/Raspberry" coloring against white background.

The Cotopaxi Fuego Hooded Down Jacket features responsibly sourced 800-fill down, so you can feel warm and cozy (literally and figuratively) when wearing it. Its outer shell, which has two zippered pockets, is water-resistant, and an interior zippered pocket provides protection for your smartphone or other small essentials.

"My favorite feature is the scuba hood, which – along with the jacket zipping up to my nose – keeps me extra warm on cold and windy days," says Leilani Osmundson , digital producer for travel at U.S. News. "I wear this jacket everywhere, from skiing and walking my dog in the winter to camping and backpacking in the summer. My other down jackets have stayed tucked away in my closet ever since I received this one!"

The Cotopaxi Fuego Hooded Down Jacket is available in a variety of the brand's signature color combos, which make it also stylish. "I seriously get compliments all the time," Osmundson says.

Tips on Trips and Expert Picks

Travel tips, vacation ideas and more to make your next vacation stellar.

A packable rain jacket is essential for any vacation, and the Marmot PreCip remains a classic choice 20 years after it first debuted. This well-priced option is 100% seam-taped with eco-friendly materials to ensure you'll stay completely dry, whether you're chasing the Niagara Falls on a boat tour or exploring Thailand during the wet season. It's also so compact that its hood can be rolled into the collar, and the jacket itself is designed to fold down into its own pocket.

Travelers appreciate how breathable this jacket is, noting that it doesn't make them sweat in warm temps. In cold weather, many say it's all you need and that if you get chilly, it's versatile enough to be layered with other clothing.

Price: $100 or less

Best Budget: Amazon Essentials Packable Jacket

Amazon makes some surprisingly sturdy travel gear, including packable jackets. In fact, more than 44,000 reviewers in total across men's and women's options have given the Amazon Essentials Packable Jacket 4.5 stars, pointing to its value for the price. The water-resistant puffer jacket is lightweight yet provides just the right amount of coziness on cool days (and works well over a hoodie for added warmth). Travelers say the jacket has worked well for a variety of trips, including cruises to Alaska and backpacking through Europe.

The jacket is available in a variety of colors and sizes including children's and plus sizes , though many reviewers note the sizes are inaccurate (so you may want to purchase a few or use Amazon's Prime Try Before You Buy to find the right fit). The jacket comes with a packable carry bag and is machine-washable.

Price: $39.90 or less

Fashion meets function in the Pack-It-Down Jacket by Lululemon, which features a slim fit that also covers the buttocks. "One thing I very much appreciate about the Pack-It-Down puffer jacket is that it cinches at the waist, so it doesn't make me look like an amorphous blob like most puffer-down jackets do," says travel blogger Katie Caf. You'd never know the jacket has 700-fill-power goose down by looking at it.

Caf also notes that her coat still looks new even after three New York City winters and two years of full-time travel, including trips to warm weather destinations. "When I'm traveling in tropical climates, it's a no-brainer to still bring my Pack-It-Down jacket because it takes up almost no room in my bag and weighs next to nothing." The water-resistant jacket has a removable stuff pocket for packing it into luggage, as well as a removable hood and hand pockets with a hidden phone sleeve.

Note that the Pack-It Down Jacket is often sold out due to its popularity, but you can sign up to to get an email when it's back in stock.

9. DU/ER Weightless Reversible Jacket – $97

best travel jackets for women

Get ready to meet the chameleon of travel jackets: the DU/ER Weightless Reversible Jacket . This jacket is the definition of getting two for the price of one. One side flaunts a classy brown cotton fabric, while the flip side has a blue puffer material. Heading out for a casual city stroll or gearing up for a chilly evening? This jacket has got both scenarios covered.

One of the features of this jacket that caught my eye was the adjustable waist, which elevates the style. Cinch it up for a snugger, more defined look, or leave it loose for an oversized fit. Plus, the jacket’s midweight nature means it’s compact enough to slide into your carry-on, leaving plenty of room for the rest of your travel essentials.

10. Patagonia Torrentshell 3L Rain Jacket – $179

best travel jackets for women

You just found your new best friend for those “just in case” travel moments. The Patagonia Torrentshell 3L Rain Jacket is the epitome of pack-and-go — it tucks neatly into its front pocket. But don’t let its simplicity fool you. This jacket is a powerhouse when it comes to battling the elements. Totally waterproof and as light as a feather, it’s designed to handle whatever Mother Nature throws at you, and it’s built to last.

People who love this jacket really love it because of its comfort. It has a two-way-adjustable hood and a cozy micro-fleece-lined neck. No more wrestling with hoods that won’t stay put or that scratchy feeling against your chin. Plus, it comes in eight colors!

11. Cotopaxi Women’s Teca Half-Zip Windbreaker – $60

best travel jackets for women

The Cotopaxi Women’s Teca Half-Zip Windbreaker is a game-changer for those breezy, in-between weather days. What sets this anorak apart is its combo of lightweight yet sturdy protection. Made from repurposed polyester taffeta with a DWR finish, it fights off wind and rain without feeling plastic-y like many other windbreakers. This one is slightly oversized, so it’s perfect for layering a cozy sweatshirt underneath. And if the temps really drop, it slides effortlessly under a bulkier coat.

Although finding the best travel jackets for your personal style and travel needs might be tricky, I hope this gave you plenty of options to choose from.

What is the best jacket for travel? The best men’s travel jackets should be versatile in style, lightweight for easy packing, and have enough pockets to hold your day-to-day items and keep them safe.

Unfortunately, pickpockets are always a concern in any crowded situation, whether traveling in a foreign country or commuting in your home city, as is simply losing valuable items from your pocket or bag.

Thankfully today, there are so many great ways to secure your belongings in keeping with your style and lifestyle. Anti-theft travel backpacks and  anti-theft handbags are perfect for the task and are no longer explicitly designed for travel.

However, keeping valuables safely on you without relying on a bag is often the preferred choice, given the advancements in pickpocket-proof clothing .

Clothing concepts designed for travel but also with day-to-day wear and current fashion trends in mind. It is the reason jackets with hidden pockets have transcended in popularity beyond the travel scene and into the mainstream.

Buying Guide for the Best Travel Jackets for Men

Whether it is the convenience of having personal items such as phones and wallets easily accessible while knowing they are safe or not having to rely on an additional bag, a jacket with a well-designed and secure pocket configuration is always a good investment.

There are loads of travel jackets with lots of pockets on the market, but lots of pockets don’t always equate to a good jacket. Unless the pockets are well placed and secure, you risk personal items falling from a pocket or being stolen by pickpockets. The jacket can also be very uncomfortable and not fit for the purpose.

We have chosen nine men’s jackets, all suited to different seasons, styles, and purposes.

What they do have in common is they are all designed with style, practicality, comfort, and safety in mind. Jackets with secure pockets to ensure your jacket is pickpocket-proof, comfortable, and stylish.

What Essential Features Should a Good Men’s Travel Jacket Have?

When looking for a good men’s travel jacket with multiple pockets, it helps to acquaint yourself with a handful of essential features you should look for.

1. Pickpocket Proof Features : Security features are essential to a good travel jacket. After all, one of the prime advantages of these jackets is to keep valuables close and secure. Look for travel jackets with zippable secret pockets, interior pockets, pockets with hidden zips, and even pockets with RFID-blocking technology.

2. Type of Material : Whether choosing a jacket for travel, everyday use, or one that will work for both, think about the climate and type of use when looking at materials. Do you need a rain jacket that is waterproof and windproof for harsher environments? Do you need a heavier jacket for cold temperatures, or are you looking for casual comfort?

Keep in mind the type of use and how versatile you need your jacket to be. If not sure, a lightweight, windproof, water-resistant coat will always work well as it can be layered for warmth and packs light when you’re not using it.

3. Protective Linings and Non-damaging Pockets : The secret pockets in your jacket should be capable of carrying fragile items like phones and sunglasses without damaging them. The jacket should have at least one pocket with a protective lining to keep delicate surfaces from scratching.

4. Design : An ideal men’s travel jacket should work equally well for travel as day-to-day wear. Just because a jacket is designed with pickpocket-proof capabilities or with travel in mind, it should not stand out as such. You want a jacket that suits your style and looks as good in a city as on a travel day. We have talked about how dressing like a local when you travel can help keep you safe, as nothing attracts pickpockets more than an obvious tourist.

5. Additional Useful Features : Look for additional features like removable hoods and sleeves to transform your jacket into a lightweight vest. Some jackets even feature top-notch technology, like plastic panels or touch-sensitive pockets, to facilitate the use of smartphones without actually taking them out.

Choosing the Right Travel Jacket

Having traveled full time for over five years, we know the importance of a good-travel jacket for men, especially one with secure pockets. Through our personal experience and research, we have selected the most reliable and stylish pickpocket-proof travel jackets based on the following criteria:

Style : An ideal travel jacket should strike the right balance between casual, stylish, and safe/secure. For travel, versatility is vital. You must also feel good wearing the jacket.

Comfort: Comfort is key, but the right fit will also help keep your belongings safer. Too large, items flop around. Too small, and you restrict what you can fit in your pockets.

Durability: A good jacket is often an everyday jacket, especially when traveling, so choose a quality fabric that will go the distance.

Pickpocket Proof Design: Look at the pocket configuration, especially the number of secure pockets, to ensure it meets your needs.

Weight: Even when it comes to a warm winter coat, you don’t want a jacket so heavy it becomes a burden to lug it around. Your jacket can be warm and lightweight with fabric technology and design advancements.

Multiple Pockets: An ideal jacket should have various pockets but lots of pockets don’t always make the best jacket. Does the jacket have the right pockets for you? What do you want to carry? Do you need secure yet quick access pockets? Are the secure pockets large enough for your phone, wallet, or other valuables? Look at the pocket configuration and make sure it fits your needs.

  • Built to Last: The Cerium is crafted with premium materials and innovative construction for lasting performance.
  • Breathable Warmth: The details. Fortius™ Air 50 outer shell offers exceptional breathability for extended comfort, while ethically sourced 850-fill European white goose down delivers superior warmth without the bulkiness of synthetics.
  • Packable Prowess: Forget wrestling with bulky jackets. Arc’teryx ditches the standard puffy panels in favor of a sleeker design with thinner segments, making the Cerium a champion of easy rolling and packing.

Arc’teryx, forged in the fires of the mountain climbing scene, Arc’Teryx knows the importance of crafting quality gear that stands the test of time – and many perilous situations along the way.

The Cerium boasts a dynamic outer shell called Fortius™ Air 50. This blend of 84% nylon and 16% elastane breathes brilliantly, ensuring long-lasting comfort even on extended treks. Inside, ethically sourced 850-fill European white goose down traps warmth without the bulk or weight of synthetic alternatives.

But the Cerium’s genius lies not just in its materials, but in its construction. Arc’teryx has ditched the standard puffy panels for a sleeker design with thinner segments. This clever trick makes rolling and packing the Cerium a breeze, a stark contrast to bulkier competitors that leave you wrestling with awkward compartments. With its smart material choices and innovative design, the Cerium is a testament to Arc’teryx’s commitment to creating gear that’s as durable as it is packable, ready to conquer any adventure you throw its way. -Brett Braley

Cotopaxi Fuego down jacket

best travel jacket with many pockets

  • RDS-certified, responsibly-sourced 800-fill goose down
  • Polartec Alpha underarm insulation and DWR-finished ripstop nylon shell
  • Looks cool with any manner of mountain fashion, and is super comfortable

The Cotopaxi Fuego down jacket is a great choice for anyone looking for a warm, packable, and stylish jacket. It’s made with RDS-certified, responsibly-sourced 800-fill goose down, so you can feel good knowing that your purchase supports ethical down companies. I’ve had my Fuego for over a year now, and I’ve been really impressed with it. It’s kept me warm in everything from cold fall days to snowy winter hikes. The DWR-finished ripstop nylon shell has held up well to everything I’ve thrown at it, and the elastic binding on the bottom of the jacket has helped to keep the cold air out. One of the things I love most about the Fuego is that it’s not bulky or awkward. I can wear it out to dinner or to happy hour, and it always looks great. It’s also super packable, so it’s easy to take with me on trips. -Tim Wenger

Patagonia’s Micro Puff® Hoody

best travel jacket with many pockets

  • The good: Extremely lightweight, zippered outside pockets, windproof, center-front zipper goes all the way above the chin, packs into an 11.5 x 6.5-inch rectangle.
  • The bad: Water resistant but not waterproof, makes the wearer’s head look like an egg when zipped all the way up with the hood on.

Don’t be fooled by the name of this puffy by Patagonia: It’s much more than a hoodie, it’s a proper winter jacket that’s as versatile as it is practical. You can certainly wear it in early fall over a long-sleeve shirt to protect you from the season’s chilly air, but it is also appropriate for wearing in colder weather on top of multiple layers to keep you toasty when the temperatures plummet or the wind picks up. While the tight elastic cuffs and hood, as well as the drawstrings at the hem, help keep the wind out, note that because it’s water resistant but not waterproof, the Micro Puff is not meant for playing in the wet snow or in heavy rain falls. Also, while it’s warm, it’s not the jacket you want in extremely cold temperatures (20 degrees should be the cut-off.) That said, if you get caught in a downpour, know that Patagonia’s Micro Puff dries extremely fast.

My partner took his Micro Puff with him on a 10-day trip to Iceland in September and it proved to be the perfect travel jacket for the fall weather on this near-Arctic island nation. It was warm enough to protect him when exposed to the wind during hikes and it was sufficiently water-resistant for the few showers we experienced.

The biggest asset of Patagonia’s Micro Puff is its ridiculously lightweight (10.5 ounces or 298 grams) and its capacity to pack into an 11.5 x 6.5-inch rectangle by being stuffed into the left pocket. This jacket will take minimum space in your carry-on or checked luggage, but you can also just toss it in a small backpack in case you need it, whether you’re going for an urban walk or a hike.

The shell of Patagonia’s Micro Puff is made of 100 percent post-consumer recycled nylon and its insulation is made of an extremely durable 100 percent recycled polyester developed by Patagonia that’s warm like down plumes but much lighter and way more ethical. – Morgane Croissant

Patagonia’s Houdini® Air Jacket

best travel jacket with many pockets

  • The good: As light as a feather, packs into a rectangle that fits in the palm of your hand, extremely breathable, very comfortable, zippered chest pocket for small items.
  • The bad: Water resistant but not waterproof, not warm

Patagonia’s Houdini® Air Jacket is not one you take with you to a destination where you know you’ll have to face low temperatures, high winds, and heavy rain. It’s meant for keeping you warm and dry during intense outdoor activities in mild temperatures and in case of a sprinkle. It’s the perfect jacket if you jog at dawn or at dusk and want to keep the chill away from your body when you sweat, or if you go for a bike ride or hike and want to make sure you have some protection in case the weather turns. The elasticized cuffs and the drawstrings on the hem and the hood keep the wind out. It’s best worn on top of a base layer or quick-dry t-shirt, not under a bulky sweater. The cut of the jacket is meant to facilitate your movements, allowing you to keep going in comfort, no matter what. When wet, Patagonia’s Houdini Air Jacket dries at record speed.

My partner took his Houdini Air Jacket (as well as his Micro Puff) with him on a hike-filled trip to Iceland in September and it came in handy when the weather was sunny and warmish, but he needed something to wear on the chilly way up the side of a volcano or after a sweaty hike. It’s very breathable so your clothes are not trapped in a damp and sweaty shell even while you give it your all in the outdoors.

Because it’s so incredibly tiny when packed into its stuff sack (7 x 3.5 inches), it’s worth adding to your luggage, whether that be your checked suitcase, your smaller carry-on, or your backpack. It’s smaller and lighter (4.1 ounces or 116 grams) than a balled-up pair of socks. – Morgane Croissant

Jack Wolfskin’s Pack & Go Shell

best travel jacket with many pockets

  • The good: Extremely waterproof, windproof, breathable, very light, packs into a small trapezoid, zippered side pockets.
  • The bad: Only two pockets, not warm (it’s a shell), few choices of color

Jack Wolfskin’s Pack and Go Shell is a no-frills, rainproof, and windproof shell that does exactly what it’s meant to do: Keep you bone dry even in heavy rain, and safe from blowing winds. It’s also very breathable so you can wear it while hiking without fearing dampness. Note that because it’s a shell, it won’t keep you warm in low temperatures, but layering underneath it is always an option.

The best feature of this jacket is, of course, its packability. The left pocket doubles as a stow pouch. After stuffing it in, you’ll be left with a light (11.6 ounces or 330 grams), 9.8 x 7-inch trapezoid that you can throw in any bag or luggage. But there’s more to praise about this package jacket: The fabric is soft, not crinkly, and barely wrinkles; the hood, the hem, and the sleeves are adjustable so no drop of rain or draft can get to you; and the two side pockets are deep and can be zipped shut so your belongings don’t escape. My personal favorite detail is the zipper pulls, which are the perfect length and are covered in a grippy material that feels lovely on your fingers. (Every little thing counts when you spend a lot of time outdoors in the wet.)

Jack Wolfskin’s choice of color for this packable jacket, for both men and women, is thin (three colors available for men and four for women), so here’s hoping they have a bigger selection in the future. I went for the hedge green while my partner has the night blue version, both of which are discreet and work just as well in the great outdoors as in any urban setting.

After looking at the size chart on Jack Wolfskin’s website, I was advised to order a size XL. It seemed surprisingly big since I’m usually a size M, but I decided to follow the brand’s guidance. Upon receiving it, the jacket was unfortunately too large, as initially expected. I placed a new order for a size L jacket and it’s a perfect fit. I would advise to order one size up if you’re in between sizes, especially if you plan to wear layers underneath. – Morgane Croissant

If you're an avid traveler, the word “packable” is music to your ears—space in a carry-on or checked bag is always precious, and any chance to save it is appreciated. But even if you aren't traveling far this fall, there's much to be said for a packable jacket that'll keep you warm and dry, without the bulk. An extra layer thrown in at the last minute might be the thing that saves you on a colder-than-expected ski trip or fall camping adventure ; that backup raincoat might be the insurance you need when bad weather threatens to ruin your day on the trails. For those situations and beyond, we turn to packable jackets that are no-brainers to bring along, just in case.

Because there are many scrunch-up-to-the-size-of-your-fist layers out there, and not all are created equal, we've rounded up the very best packable jackets—from down-filled puffers to weatherproof rain shells and everything in between. Read on for our top recommendations.

Puffer jackets

The best packable jackets have a high ratio of warmth to size-when-packed—and this hooded puffer from Fjällräven deserves top marks for just that. Made of a slinky, lightweight fabric (and stuffed with 100 percent recycled materials), this jacket takes up minimal space when packed into its own pocket, yet serves as a substantial insulating or primary layer. The fit is also cut to flatter, and comes in a basic black, navy, forest green, or a terra-cotta brown.

Available in : Women's sizes 2XS–XL; men's sizes XS–2XL

Made of highly compressible PrimaLoft insulation, this ultra-lightweight jacket packs up tightly in any carry-on. It also features two zippered hand warmer pockets and an adjustable drop-tail hem to seal in extra warmth.

As with everything at The North Face, it has a lifetime warranty.

Perfectly named the Packable Puffer, this lightweight jacket from Girlfriend Collective is just what you need on a chilly night outdoors. It's also wind-resistant, water-repellent, and offers a relaxed fit for maximum comfort. The best part? It packs down to fit in its built-in bag, taking up as little suitcase room as possible.

I wore this cozy sherpa jacket from Vuori nonstop last year—and I can't wait to pull it out again as soon as the temperature dips. It's the perfect in-between jacket: Warm and soft enough for cold fall morning walks, and light enough to wear into early spring. I wore it just as easily on a trip to Boston last November as I did on an early morning hike in April. As much as I love wearing this cute jacket on its own, it's equally functional for layering under larger coats in the winter . Made from recycled materials, the sherpa fleece locks in heat and there are two zippered hand pockets for small must-haves. My favorite thing about the Vuori sherpa jacket: It is incredibly well-made and will be a permanent resident in my closet for years to come.

The brand's mission is to reduce its impact on the planet; as such, this jacket is made of primarily recycled wool.

best travel jacket with many pockets

Got my jacket in. Turned the jacket inside out, and have been studying the jacket pocket layout.

I soon saw the Q.U.E.S.T. vest sale, and ordered that one too. Now, the Essential Jacket 2.0, probably would have been a rat

I did order an XL based on my current measurements. I do now wish I had ordered an M1 instead, as I can see with the items packed into the jacket it will become quite tight. I did order my

Q.U.E.S.T. Vest in a M1, so I have somewhat of a comparison.

I am a longer waisted person, so would be interested in a Tall version of this jacket.

I bought this for travel for a couple of upcoming trips. It fits like a glove. I love the material and the pockets. Before I even got to travel I had to make a trip to the ER with my adult child. It was perfect to throw my stuff and his in the many pockets it had so that I only had to grab the jacket and head out the door with everything I needed. Thank you so much. I would highly recommend this. And the weight balancing is awesome!

I love the jacket. I have been wearing it around town to get accustomed to all of the pockets. It has been

great and I so look forward to traveling with it.

LOVE the zip-off sleeves, so this can be worn either as a jacket or as a vest, which is great for the temperature swings we get here in Arizona. With all the pockets, I don't even need to carry a purse, because the jacket/vest carries everything my purse does, without the weight of a purse hanging off on one shoulder.

Very well made. I look forward to trying it out.

I stared at the pile of jackets on my bed.

Trevor, my husband, sighed.  “It’s time for bed. Just pick one.”

I threw up my hands, paced the room a little, fingered one jacket and another. See, I hate being cold and wet when I’m traveling. Actually, let me amend that statement. I hate being cold. If I’m semi-warm, being wet is tolerable and maybe even enjoyable.

Which means picking the right jacket for travel is tricky. Like walking into a casino with a dim notion of how to play blackjack and betting your life savings.

At least that’s how it feels to me. So when I find the right jacket for the right weather situation, I’m the lucky winner with gold coins raining down on my head, dancing like Psy in the  Gangnam Style  music video.

Here’s a lineup of the best travel jackets for both the men and ladies to feel comfortable when cold weather strikes at your destination.

The Best Lightweight Jackets for Travel

best travel jacket with many pockets

The North Face Women’s Thermoball Eco Jacket ($199)

With wind protection and the ability to compress into a tiny ball yet keep you toasty-warm, this jacket might be your new travel BFF. Oh, and it’s water and wind resistant.

Thanks to its slim fit, you won’t look like an overstuffed marshmallow. But inside, you might feel as warm and cozy as a fire-toasted one.

One reviewer on Amazon raves:  “This is the perfect travel jacket for multiple weather conditions. It is probably not for Arctic weather, but works great for layering and easy roll up and shove into a backpack or even purse . I bought it for a two week trip to South Africa, wherein I was first in Paris for a few days, next on safari, Johannesburg and then Cape Town. It went easily from chilly mornings to being able to roll it up and pack it away for warmer afternoons. Also easy to tie around waist.”

Another reviewer agrees:  “This jacket is unbelievably warm… and great for touring a in cold city like New York. I was warm outside while walking and sightseeing… when I came indoors, this tiny little miracle folded up and went in my purse!”

best travel jacket with many pockets

Columbia Women’s Kruser Ridge II Softshell ($100)

I’ve always envied my husband’s black UnderArmour jacket that he bought 10+ years ago. A lightweight soft shell that’s wind and water resistant, he’s carried that jacket on almost every trip and it’s never let him down. If only it came in women ’s sizes.

This jacket reminds me strongly of his. Only with more feminine lines. And made by a different company. This soft shell, warm jacket could be your next “weather looks overcast and rainy, probably bring a jacket” coat for the next 10 years. Just saying.

best travel jacket with many pockets

prAna Women’s Mandel Jacket ($129)

This jacket is ready for anything you throw its way. Seriously.

With an organic cotton-nylon blend stretch canvas shell, it can handle whatever your trip throws down. Rain? No problem. Snow? Bring it. Brisk wind? Let’s do this. Sudden change in the weather? Got you covered.

Thanks to an attached hood, you’ll ward off any chillier-than-yesterday breezes without trouble. Did I mention it even looks adventure-ready with safari-style pockets?

best travel jacket with many pockets

Lululemon Men’s City Sweat Zip Hoodie French Terry ($128)

Jeremy, co-founder of Tortuga, recommends a Lululemon hoodie like this one. He says,  “They’re super comfortable for flights and tend to have an abundance of sleek pockets that are either zippered or have snaps. They last forever and dress up or down. All of mine have been in black.”

This particular hoodie boasts Lycra fabric so your jacket doesn’t go saggy and hidden pockets for your smartphone and coins. All the better to travel without looking like a tourist.

best travel jacket with many pockets

Ministry of Supply Intelligent Heated Jacket: Men and Women ($495)

This smart jacket “uses artificial intelligence to learn your preferences, and automatically heats to your optimal temperature” according to their website. Ok, you have my attention.

With your smartphone app, you control the jacket’s thermostat. Thanks to its ability to repel wind, snow, water, and odors, this jacket is primed to be your travel buddy on every trip.

Patrick, designer at Tortuga, says: “I’ve worn it in a full range of temperatures from 60F to 15F. It takes some time to heat up enough for temperatures that low, but it’s definitely doable.”

best travel jacket with many pockets

Icebreaker Women’s Merino Quantum Hoodie ($169)

Don’t let the word hoodie fool you. This is a women ’s jacket that can hold its own.

Reflective details, breathable fabric, warm midweight merino wool, and a fitted hood. Yup, this jacket checks all the correct boxes for a travel-ready summer jacket to fend off cool English nights or those Scottish moor winds (romantic in theory, chilly in practice, a no-go for long-haul traveling).

Even better, because of merino’s natural odor resistance, you’ll smell as sweet as the day you set off. Oh thank goodness.

The Best Rain Jackets for Travel

When you say “waterproof travel jacket” or, more simply, “rain jacket”, you mean a shell. Shells have been a crucial part of  winter packing  forever, and while the outer layer shell hasn’t changed much in the past 20 years, there are still some pretty great options.

Going somewhere rainy and need seriously waterproof travel jacket?  Stacey has you covered in this article.

best travel jacket with many pockets

Craghoppers NatGeo 250 Jacket ($200)

The Craghopper NatGeo 250 travel jacket was designed for adventurous photographers and journalists. If this jacket can live up to the rigorous field test of NatGeo employees, it can handle whatever adventure you have in mind.

Featuring “Aqua Dry” and “Thermo Air+” waterproofing and breathability, as well as a pocket with built in RFID shielding technology ( not really necessary ), this jacket is for the pros.

best travel jacket with many pockets

Columbia Watertight II Windbreaker ($55)

The Columbia Watertight II windbreaker is definitely the lightest travel jacket on the list, and easily my personal favorite. A slim, carry on friendly top layer, this travel jacket simply performs. It keeps you warm, dry, and doesn’t weigh you down. What else are you looking for?

I packed this rain coat for my 800km hike across Spain on the Camino de Santiago this past October. When every ounce counts, you want a jacket that’s worth it, and the Watertight performed beautifully. This jacket stuffs into its own pocket (easy to pack), and it kept me dry in several downpours in the high altitude of the Pyrenees.

Elastic on the cuffs, waistband, and even the trim of the hood kept the wind and wet off my skin and locked in my body heat.

The color options are stylish enough to wear in town without any tourist shame, and while this jacket doesn’t have any insulation to speak of (it’s super thin), the jacket kept me warm without overheating thanks to the breathability. Worth packing as a great top layer for wind, rain, and chilly mornings and evenings, and when you just don’t have any room for a bulky winter coat–even a “travel jacket.”

Pro Tip : If your jacket doesn’t pack into a stuff pocket, save space by rolling it into a tight cylinder and wrap a thick rubber band around it to keep it bundled in the bottom of your bag until you need it.

best travel jacket with many pockets

Helly Hansen Squamish CIS 3-in-1 Travel Jacket ($225)

I love the flexibility of a 3-in-1 travel jacket, but so often the insulated layer/outer shell combo is more like a 3-in-none than a candidate for the best travel jacket. Not so with the Helly Hansen Squamish jacket.

The insulated layer is great for keeping you warm around the bonfire or a chilly clear night out without the added protection of the outer shell. Just zip it off and you’re good to go.

Bonus:  It doesn’t look like the “inside” of a jacket, so that’s good.

The outer shell layer is perfect all by itself for a fall hike with rain in the forecast. Fully seam sealed so it’s wind and waterproof, the jacket features nice touches like a storm flap on the front zipper pocket, and waterproof pockets for your phone, as well as adjustable cuffs (super important). If you wear both layers together, take solace in the fact that you can adapt to warmer temps or sunny weather as the day changes.

The Best Winter Jackets for Travel

best travel jacket with many pockets

Icebreaker Merino Women’s Stratus Zip Hooded Jacket ($262)

This full-length jacket is lined with New Zealand merino wool to keep you warm. The jacket’s outside is treated with DWR, so sleet or snow slides right off. Reviewers recommend buying a size larger than needed.

best travel jacket with many pockets

Women’s prAna Long Jacket ($199)

This long, insulated jacket comes with a removable faux fur hood detail. Plus, it’s made from a recycled wool blend, so you can feel good about saving the planet.

Tortuga writer Meg just took this jacket on a winter trip to notoriously chilly Chicago. She says,  “I love that it’s longer (covers your butt!) and it’s super warm without being too bulky or making me feel like that kid that can’t put his arms down in a Christmas Story.”

best travel jacket with many pockets

Patagonia Men’s Nano Puff Travel Jacket ($199)

If you want to take your winter jacket to the limit, the even slimmer Patagonia Nano Puff travel jacket is the way to go.

Insanely lightweight while still being warm, this jacket is windproof, water-resistant (DWR treated), and will maintain up to 96% of its warmth rating even when wet.

Not bad for a jacket you can crumple up in your fist.

Travel Jackets with Hidden Pockets

best travel jacket with many pockets

Baubax Men’s and Women’s Windbreaker 2.0 ($178)

The BauBax Windbreaker is part of a full line of outerwear launched after the record breaking success of the BauBax sweatshirt on Kickstarter.

The windbreaker features all the same gizmos and gadgets–like a built-in inflatable neck pillow, eye mask, gloves, iPad pocket, stylus (it’s in the zipper), water-resistant phone pocket, double lined hand warmer pockets, passport pocket , and more.

If you want to squeeze every ounce of functionality out of your travel jacket, look no further.

best travel jacket with many pockets

SCOTTeVEST Pack Windbreaker ($124)

Equipped with 13 pockets for on the go digital nomads, the ScotteVest Pack Jacket is a tech friendly beast.

In addition to the standard two zippered pockets this jacket has two chest pockets, an extendable key holder,  sunglasses  pocket, passport pocket, iPad pocket, phone pocket (with headphone cable access) and the “weight management system” to keep everything in place and balanced  so you don’t bulge and sag like a tourist. However, the best pocket might be the back pocket. You can stuff the Pack Jacket in and it’s a handy case.

The Action Jacket ($159)

Designed by a former Army Ranger, this jacket is built for active travel at any destination.

Featuring a water-resistant, super lightweight, stretchable “ninja” fabric weave, breathable back vents, contoured hood, reflective strips, and adjustable cuffs and hem. The action jacket is designed to be tailor fitted to your body so you forget you’re wearing it.

However, the coolest part has to be the phone pocket. The seam sealed zipper and adjustable tension strap keep your phone dry and snug against your arm. No more bouncing around on that morning jog, or sprint through the airport terminal.

Perfect for listening to your favorite tunes, staying dry on a hike, or throwing over your insulated layers, this travel jacket packs down into an attached pocket and “weighs less than a banana.”

Seriously. This might become your new favorite travel jacket.

Best Fashionable Jackets For Travel

best travel jacket with many pockets

Canada Goose Brookvale Hoody ($525)

I know, I know. Canada Goose is super expensive and you’re totally “that traveler” when you wear one, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention these top of the line travel jackets.

The Brooklvale Hoody is a lighter, leaner jacket than the flagship parka, and the versatility really comes through.

This jacket looks great, but really is built for winter.

The quilting and patented duck down means this jacket is rated for -15C (that’s icy), and the “Veraflex” fabric means you can wear it in practically any environment. Even better, the Brookvale hoody packs down into its own stuff pocket for increased packability. Expensive, but worth it.

Strafe Drifter Jacket ($249)

A modern twist on the classic bomber look, if you’re not weathering any major storms, this is the jacket for looking good in winter.

Made from a stretchy, breathable fabric filled with warm, “diamond quilted Primaloft Silver insulation” (so fancy), the Strafe Drifter Jacket is a premium lightweight stylish travel jacket.

best travel jacket with many pockets

TopShop Rosa Biker Jacket ($88)

I’d be amiss—and Tom Cruise would be sorely disappointed in me—if I didn’t add in a black leather bomber jacket to this list.

Want to look BA and fashionable? Want to look dangerous, mysterious, and charming?

A black leather bomber jacket gives you all that, plus warmth and decent wind-blocking abilities. But really, if you just want to drape yourself in bad boy allure, that’s cool, too.

That’s the main reason why I bought one.

Pro-tip:  This bad boy does NOT pack down, and doesn’t apologize either.

A travel jacket can make or break your trip. No joke. One time in  Boston , the constant rain was so bad, I walked into a store and bought a raincoat. Who cares what the price was. Just no more rain ruining my day.

That’s the benefit of a great jacket: to keep you dry and warm so you enjoy the sights you traveled so far to see.

The best all-around lightweight jacket is either:

  •  A  hoodie  (like this  men’s Lululemon one  or this  women’s Icebreaker one )
  • This jacket from Ministry of Supply ( men’s version  and  women’s version )

7 Best Men’s Travel Jackets – Our Top Picks

Men in jackets on mountain background

If you’re a keen backpacker or a traveler who doesn’t wish to be held back by the elements, then having a travel jacket could be the difference between freezing on a snowy mountain ascent, getting soaked on a hike or staying warm, dry and ready to tackle whatever the adventure throws at you. In this guide, we’re about to share with you what we think are seven of the best men’s travel jackets on the market.

Table of contents

Finding something lightweight, your destination, overall cost, patagonia nano puff jacket, arc’teryx beta ar jacket, scottevest revolution 2.0, the north face apex bionic 2 jacket, mountain hardwear men’s ghost whisperer hooded down jacket, columbia men’s watertight hooded rain jacket, eddie bauer men’s rainfoil packable jacket, overall winner, most stylish, most storage space, water repellent, the bottom line.

The right jacket will become a staple part of your travel kit, and could be the key in helping you to push yourself to the limits even further – taking you one step closer to reaching your travel goals. After all, you don’t want your kit to be the thing that lets you down.

When looking for the best men’s travel jacket, you’ll probably want one that’s lightweight, easy to carry around, and can fit into a backpack if the weather’s treating you well. You don’t want anything bulky to hold you back or get in your way as you’re seeing more of the world, so having a reliable, top quality travel jacket is an incredibly important piece of equipment to have.

However, with so many technical features, various adaptable fabrics and additional elements that all have their own useful purpose, choosing the right one isn’t easy.

By reading this guide, you will learn the following:

  • The main technical features of each of our top seven jackets, so you can see what each one offers at a glance.
  • The pros and cons for each one to help you see an unbiased view, ultimately helping you make your decision.
  • The verdict: which jacket we think is best and why it’s a good investment for your travel plans.

Things to think about when choosing the best men’s travel jackets

When it comes to finding the perfect travel jacket, you’ll need to look for more than just the colour and overall look. Although you’ll want to feel good wearing it – and rightly so if you’re making an investment –  there is so much more that a travel jacket can offer than simply the style alone.

When it comes to the fabric, you need to think about what you need your travel jacket for. For example, if you’re climbing or hiking then a soft-shell jacket will be suitable. For trekking, you might want something more heavy duty like a hard-shell jacket. And for more extreme sports, like skiing or sailing, something super technical with plenty of features to keep you warm, dry and easily seen by people around you is best. We’ll get into this in more detail with our individual reviews.

Overall, finding a waterproof jacket is going to be your best bet, as you’ll be prepared for any weather. However, there are benefits to using a non-waterproof fabrics too, like down-filled fabrics for warmth or shower resistant, lightweight fabrics if you’re in sunnier climes. Also, if you’re hiking upland you’re likely to experience wind, so you’ll need a jacket that’s both breathable and wind resistant.

As a general rule of thumb if you’re looking for a waterproof jacket; look for the waterproof rating on the jackets you’re interested in, which will let you know how much water it’s designed to repel before it goes through to the fabric. This will help you understand if the jacket you’re considering will suit your travel needs.

As we’ve already mentioned, if you’re outside for long periods of time – especially between sunrise and sunset –  you’ll want a jacket that fits compactly into a backpack or can be carried around easily. This is especially important if you’re hiking or climbing and already have a lot to carry, or if you’re outside during the colder times of the day. You can add plenty of layers underneath your jacket to really add the warmth, so your outer jacket can do the job of tackling the more extreme elements, like the wind and rain.

Are you heading somewhere warm and sunny? Or are you swapping comfortable climates for the stunning scenery that comes with a freezing mountain resort? This is really important as your end destination will ultimately determine which kind of travel jacket will serve you best. Sunnier destinations will require something lightweight and breathable, whereas colder destinations will need an insulated jacket with light reflecting trims to help you be seen. Make sure you factor this into your search.

We won’t lie to you – purchasing a travel jacket doesn’t usually come cheap. A travel jacket is far more than just a winter coat; it’s a performance aid that’s designed to have a range of technical features to help keep you safe and comfortable, whatever the weather. This means you’ll need to prepare yourself to make an investment, and when it comes to finding the right travel jacket we don’t think you should go for the cheapest one (if you can help it).

Choosing a more expensive garment will also ensure it lasts you a really long time, so in the long-run you’ll save money by not needing to replace an old jacket every few years because you’ve worn it out.

Best men’s travel jackets – our top 7 picks

When it comes to the Beta AR Jacket , Arc’teryx uses Gore-Tex technology, offering the highest level of waterproofing and breathability. It comes in a regular fit for comfort, with an internal collar in the hood to protect you from stormy weather.

It’s also lightweight and easy to pack, whether you’re stuffing it into a rucksack or suitcase. However, it doesn’t pack down quite as easily as the Patagonia Nano Puff Jacket, so you’ll need to allow for a little extra room when you travel.

To conclude: the Beta AR has been around since 2000 and has gained a firm following with adventurers all around the world. That many people can’t be wrong.

  • Highly technical and built for performance.
  • It’s fully waterproof; perfect for downpours.
  • Great for loads of different activities, including climbing, skiing or being outdoors.
  • Comes with a helmet compatible DropHood™ so you can wear it with a helmet for more extreme sports.

  • Made with 100% Healspro LM poly fabric, offering superior wind and water resistance.
  • New and improved design.

  • Hidden wire conduits.

Durable, water resistant and breathable; the SCOTTeVEST Revolution 2.0 had been designed by a wife who grew tired of carrying her husband’s gadgets around in her purse. With 24 pockets in total, the jacket is built to balance weight while allowing the wearer to carry more and feel less. This is thanks to the patented weight management system, which spreads the total load across the whole garment without the pockets bulging.

In fact, there are plenty of dedicated pockets for cell phones, cameras , tablets and more. It even comes with space for an eyeglass chamois and pocket map, detachable key chain and water bottle holder, giving you enough space for everything you’ll need to take with you on your travels – and more.

The Revolution 2.0 is one of the most versatile jackets on the market, and can be turned into a vest by simply unzipping the sleeves. This is ideal in unexpectedly warmer weathers, or when you’re out during the day when the sun’s out and you’re feeling a bit warm. The hood is also removable; simply roll the hood away into the zippered compartment in the collar to keep it out of your way.

If you’re trying to travel light without a heavy backpack , or are looking for a jacket that offers more than what it seems to just from appearance alone, then this jacket is a winner.

  • It’s fully versatile and can be turned into a vest for comfort.
  • There is more than enough space for everything you’ll need on your travels.
  • The fabric is Teflon coated, which is great for protecting against water spills and mud splashes.
  • It doesn’t come in a wide range of colors.
  • It doesn’t pack down very easily.
  • Standard fit.
  • Windproof stretch soft-shell jacket for cool-weather activities.
  • Center front zipper, zip chest pocket and zip hand pockets.
  • Hem cinch-cord.
  • Raised logos.
  • Machine washable.

If you’re heading somewhere cold or even freezing, the North Face Apex Bionic 2 is designed for windy, cold-weather activities. The soft shell is designed to keep you warm, while the windproof outer fabric features a fleece backer for added comfort in breezy weather.

The fleece backing is made with WindWill®, which utilizes a unique fabric-bonding fabric process that allows a limited degree of external air permeability, drastically reducing the effects of windchill to enhance your comfort and warmth.

The outer fabric is also water repellent, so whether you’re braving the rain or light snow showers, no water is getting in. And want to know one of the best bits about it? It’s machine washable, so there’s no expensive dry cleaning involved to get the jacket back to its high-performing state. Just chuck a capful of your favorite waterproofing solution in with the wash and the jacket will be like new.

Overall, the North Face Apex Bionic 2 is a great all-round jacket that’s perfect for a range of activities, like skiing, snowboarding, camping, hiking , training, running, or climbing. Plus, North Face is one of the most famous outerwear brands out there, so their jackets are tried and tested by experts year after year.

  • North Face is a popular, well trusted brand within the outdoor apparel community.
  • It’s perfect for temperatures down to 42°F. Any colder and you’ll need to add layers – so it’s still an effective jacket even at the coldest temperatures.
  • It’s got zip-up pockets to keep valuables safe and secure.
  • It’s on the heavier side of midweight, so even though it’s warm you may get too hot if the temperatures are mild.
  • It’s not very easy to pack away due to its weight.
  • Can be zipped into its own jacket for extra storage.
  • Made from hard-wearing ripstop fabric; 100% nylon.
  • Insulation: 90% goose down, 10% goose feather. Nikwax™ Hydrophobic Down™ 800-fill.
  • Low profile quilt pattern to trap in warmth.
  • Soft elastic inner cuff to keep out the cold.

When it comes to a jacket that can do it all, nothing really comes close to the Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer Jacket . While a lesser known brand than its rivals North Face and Arc’teryx, it holds its own in a competitive market.

There are loads of features to shout about with the Ghost Whisperer. It’s insulated with Nikwax™ Hydrophobic Down™ 800-fill, which is made up from 90% goose down and 10% goose feathers. This makes it incredibly warm and insulating while resisting moisture. However, one of the best things about it is that the jacket has retained its lightweight hand-feel, even though it’s packed with down.

There are loads of additional features too, from the single interior toggle hem to the soft elastic inner cuff. There’s also a built-in secure loop for carbine attachment to a harness, which is perfect for climbers. Most people love it because it looks stylish – there’s a conception that technical jackets and fashion don’t go hand in hand, so the Ghost Whisperer does a great job of adding a stylish touch to your technical kit.

If you’re looking for a jacket that is big on warmth without the bulk, this one is a great option.

  • It’s super warm and insulating.
  • It looks just as good as it feels.
  • It’s got great additional features for climbers.
  • It features internal adjusters so you can find a great fit and shape.
  • Can be easily ripped if you’re not careful when brushing past sharp objects.
  • Can get a bit clammy during high activities – you might need to layer up so you can remove them.
  • Omni-Tech™ waterproof with sealed seams to stop the water getting in.
  • Stuffs down into its own hand pocket.
  • Attached, adjustable storm hood.
  • Drawcord adjustable hem
  • Zippered hand pockets.
  • Abrasion resistant chin guard.
  • Packable into hand pocket.
  • Mesh lining
  • Center back length: 29 inches.

Columbia is a very popular outerwear brand, so it’s no surprise their Watertight Hooded Rain Jacket has made the list. Made using Omni-Tech™ waterproof technology with fully sealed seams, this jacket is designed to keep out the rain whether in light or heavy downpours. It can be stuffed into its own hand pocket, making it easy to carry wherever you are in the world.

There’s plenty of additional features to shout about too, including secure zippered hand pockets, an abrasion resistant chin guard, drop tail and adjustable drawcord at the hem. All of these elements are designed to keep you comfortable and safe from the elements. It also means you can wear the jacket your way.

Its lightweight construction means that it’s great for layering – and you might need to do this to add warmth if you’re heading to colder conditions.

  • It’s a very affordable jacket.
  • Packs down easily into its own pocket for easy carrying.
  • Great for layering.
  • It’s not the warmest jacket on the market.
  • It’s not the best fit for taller people.
  • Packs into the right hand pocket.
  • Two-layer WeatherEdge® technology; fully seam sealed for complete waterproof and breathable protection to 5K/5K.
  • High neck collar prevents shirt underneath from getting wet.
  • Mesh lining for enhanced breathability.
  • Adjustable cuffs with Velcro® tabs.
  • Adjustable drawcord hem.
  • Interior secure Velcro® pocket.
  • Secure zip hand pockets.
  • Average length: Reg 28.5″.
  • A universal fit; not too slim, not too relaxed on the body.

Both stylish and functional, the Eddie Bauer Men’s Rainfoil Packable Jacket is designed for convenience. It packs away into the right hand pocket and also doubles as a compact travel pillow. If you fly frequently or enjoy road trips, then this jacket saves the need to take a travel pillow on your adventures, leaving room for more important things. The hood packs away, too.

When it comes to the outer shell, it’s incorporated with two-layer WeatherEdge® technology. This basically means that it’s fully seam sealed to offer ultimate waterproofing properties that will keep you dry in rainy weather. Coupled with a StormRepel® finish on the fabric, moisture is shed and simply drips off.

Another great feature is the high neck collar, which prevents the shirt underneath from getting wet – keeping you dry whatever you’re wearing underneath. But to stop you from getting too hot or sweaty, it features a mesh lining for breathability.

If you’re looking for an affordable waterproof layer that will do the job of keeping you completely dry, the Rainfoil Packable Jacket’s got you covered.

  • Has plenty of room to fit over midweight layers.
  • It doubles up as a travel pillow for comfort.
  • It’s affordable.
  • It comes in a range of colors.
  • It doesn’t come with many pockets.
  • It’s not temperature rated.

The verdict: which travel jacket is best?

When it comes to the features on each technical jacket, there’s a lot to take in to discover which one is best. There are so many options out there, but we’ve chosen the seven that we truly think are the best right now; many of these jackets have undergone various design updates to bring them up to the standard they are now, and it really shows.

Overall, our winner has to be the North Face Apex Bionic 2 Jacket . Perfect for a range of various activities, from the extreme to the not-so-extreme, you can literally take it anywhere and it will deliver. It’s windproof, it’s designed to withstand the extreme cold and it can be easily layered up or down. The one thing is doesn’t have is waterproofing, but it’s water resistant so it does a good job in light showers.

A very close number two is the Arc’teryx Beta AR Jacket . This one is in fact waterproof, and uses clever Gore-Tex technology to offer the highest level of waterproofing and breathability. It’s best for heavier showers, and is great for packing down. However, it loses points on how easy it is to pack down, as other jackets on our list take up less space, with is an important factor when traveling.

Most stylish: The Mountain Hardwear Ghost Whisperer Hooded Down Jacket wins on this factor. It’s been designed with both style and function in mind, and keeps its shape without any bulk. There are loads of additional features too, which ticks a lot of boxes.

Most storage space: If you’re someone who doesn’t like traveling with a bag or much equipment, then SCOTTeVest Revolution 2.0 offers an alternative solution through its 25 pockets. It’s built in such a way that it won’t become bulky, so whatever you’re getting up to you won’t be held back.

Now you have all the information you need, pick your favorites and do some extra research on the prices and check out customer reviews to help you make your decision.

Unpacking some of the technical terms – what do they mean?

If you’re unfamiliar with some of the technical terms when it comes to the construction of your technical jacket, this mini guide is here to help.

Gore-Tex is a breathable, waterproof, and windproof fabric. It’s composed of stretched polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and, as explained here , the pores between its strands are small enough to keep water out, but large enough to let vapor through – keeping the wearer warm and dry.

Ripstop is a woven fabric that’s typically made of nylon, and is created using a special reinforced technique that makes the jacket resistant to ripping. Jackets made using ripstop fabric are generally better at withstanding more extreme activities.

Jackets made using duck down insulation are generally warmer and better at keeping in the warmth than other materials. However, man-made insulation is firmy on the rise, including PrimaLoft, as they’re often created using sustainable materials and do just as good a job as duck down, without the question marks around animal welfare.

While you’re most likely familiar with the concept of water repellency, it’s important not to get confused between that and waterproofing. Water repellent fabrics will generally only keep the water from getting through the seams up until a certain point, but it’s normally been treated with a special coating so that the water doesn’t easily penetrate. Waterproofing means the water won’t get through at all.

Now that you’re armed with a lot more information about the best men’s travel jackets and the features they can offer, we hope that there are at least a couple on our list that you can look into further. Travel + Leisure / Daisy Rodriguez

Before I became a travel journalist, I was a buyer in the fashion industry for over 15 years, working with brands such as Brooks Brothers, Michael Kors, and the former Liz Claiborne, so you can say that I have a keen eye for style, quality fabrics, and a good fit. These days, I put my former skills to work in a different way. On average, I travel twice a month and it’s not unusual for me to be zipping through the airport on any given day, so I pack light and maximize the outfits that I’m taking with me.

At first, it wasn’t easy to streamline my packing lists for each destination; I was always stressed that I had left an essential top, pair of bottoms, jacket — you name it — at home. But, with the help of my former fashion buyer brain, I developed the ultimate travel capsule wardrobe , complete with three foolproof outfits that help me create dozens of looks (without needing to check a bag , I might add). Here are my favorite mix-and-match separates that suit any type of trip itinerary — both work and play — along with some must-have accessories that'll widen your wardrobe horizons.

Duer LuxTwill Trucker Jacket

Duer luxtwill high-rise trousers, minnow navy and dusty red stripe sweater.

I’ve been a huge fan of the Canadian clothing company Duer for several years now, and its LuxTwill Trucker Jacket and matching High-Rise Trousers are one of my favorite outfits to bring on work trips. Both the jacket and pants are made of 98 percent cotton and 2 percent elastane, so the pieces have a structured look while allowing for some stretch for comfort.

While it’s a great set, I also love to wear the jacket as a separate, over dresses, leggings, or jeans. And, to save suitcase space, I'll sport it on the plane. I've found that it's a versatile essential that’s great for work and play destinations. The trousers pair well with knits as well as button-front tops. I especially love pairing it with a slouchy novelty sweater like my favorite one from Minnow ; it's an excellent transition piece for spring that works with denim, pants, skirts and shorts and is constructed of a dreamy cotton-cashmere blend, making it super soft and comfortable.

The timeless nautical pullover is also cozy, but not bulky and the dolman sleeves are fashionable and functional, allowing you to move freely when traveling. I own two of these sweaters and find myself bringing them on work trips and vacations because they match with nearly everything that I own.

To copy the look for less, pair this cropped jacket (on sale for $24) with these $40 high-waisted trousers and this nautical-inspired crewneck sweater that's currently $31 — all from Amazon.

PrettyGarden Two-Piece Sleeveless Vest and Wide-Leg Pants Set

I’m in love with Amazon's two-piece sets because not only are they available at amazing price points, but they're super sleek and can be styled in so many ways. Here, the vest is drapey and offers a sophisticated and elegant look, although it also works well with denim; when I'm home, I like pairing it with my Everlane Super-Soft Relaxed Jeans for a laidback SoCal vibe, but when I'm on the go, it goes perfectly with the Duer LuxTwill High-Rise Trousers featured above (and I can layer the brand's LuxTwill Trucker Jacket on top or pair the PrettyGarden trousers with my Minnow sweater ).

The bottoms are like palazzo pants and flare slightly, with a loose fit throughout. I like that they aren’t too tight, making them perfect for work meetings, long travel days, and itinerary-heavy days. They also have functioning pockets that are great for holding your essentials while on the move. The set comes in eight colors and sizes range from S to 2XL. Both pieces are machine washable; I’ve put them to the test in the wash several times and they come out looking just as good as new. A word of advice: Make sure you hang them to dry or lay them flat so they retain good shape.

For a more tailored look, you can get the set with a tighter-fitting cropped vest for $52. But, if this look is too business casual for your destination, I also pulled some stunning two-piece sets; check out the now-viral Anrabess Short-Sleeve Mockneck Sweater Set on sale for $40, the tropical getaway-ready Anrabess Linen Tank Top Matching Set that's currently $30, or the PrettyGarden Rib Knit Matching Set , which trades trousers for an elegant maxi skirt.

Vuori’s Short-Sleeve Lux Crew Jumpsuit

Vuori makes my favorite activewear, so it’s no surprise that this super-flattering jumpsuit is on my list of favorite travel outfits. The jumpsuit's performance knit is so comfortable, especially in the summer when it feels good to wear loose-fitting clothing, but is also perfect for travel days, road trips, as well as lounging poolside (save room in your carry-on by using it as a swim cover-up).

To make this outfit extra cool, slip the brand’s Halo Performance Hoodie over it when heading to a Pilates class or an early morning stroll. You can also wear it with a cropped jacket (like the Duer trucker jacket that I mentioned earlier) for a night out on the town. When the dress code calls for something cozier, I'll layer my Minnow sweater on top so it feels like I'm wearing a sweatshirt and sweatpants — even though the combo looks effortlessly chic.

If you’re not a fan of onesies, don’t fret. Vuori's Villa Wide-Leg Pants can be paired with its Energy Top to serve a similar look. And, if you're looking for more budget-friendly jumpsuits, over at Amazon, you can get the Anrabess Short-Sleeve Crewneck Jumpsuit for $40.

Best Accessories for Travel Outfits

Now, it's time to put the finishing touches on these travel outfits. Similarly, my go-to accessories can be mixed and matched to be styled with different looks, ensuring that everything in your suitcase is functional and will get plenty of use on your trip. Below, you'll find my favorite travel shoes and travel purses to tie your outfits together.

Kizik Venice Slip-On Sneakers

A while back, I kept seeing these amazing hands-free slip-on shoes that you can put on and take off without having to bend down or fuss with laces. The Venice slip-ons are by far my favorites. They’re easy to slide right into, super lightweight, and hassle-free to pack. I love wearing them on long flights because they don’t feel constricting (plus, they make going through TSA security a breeze and I can easily slide out of them once I'm in my seat). And, when I'm at my destination, their cushy insoles and grippy rubber soles keep my feet comfy and supported when I'm on the move.

They go with everything and really elevate any outfit. I'll pair them with my Duer set for more casual affairs and use them to make my PrettyGarden vest-trouser duo more playful after work meetings. And, of course, they're the long-lost soulmate for my Vuori jumpsuit , especially on travel days.

Sapahn Jori Crossbody Bag

I used to be partial to labels and monogrammed bags, but I’m currently loving the Jori Crossbody for day-to-night use. During a recent trip to Santa Barbara, I found myself using it instead of my trusty Lululemon Everywhere Belt Bag — which says a lot . Although it looks small, it actually fits everything that I need for a busy day on the go; I can store a small notebook, wallet, makeup compact, and smartphone in there without effort.

The best feature of this bag is that you can switch out the straps to give it an entirely different look, making it transitional from work to play. There are two pockets inside for organizing smaller items like lipsticks or receipts. It comes in four colors, although the khaki hue is my favorite because it’s great for spring and it goes with everything — whether I'm dressed up in my PrettyGarden vest and wide-leg trousers , dressed down in my Duer LuxTwill Trucker Jacket and matching High-Rise Trousers , or out grabbing coffee in my Vuori jumpsuit .

Amazon is filled with leather crossbody purses that are equal parts versatile, functional, and stylish — starting with the Gladdon Crossbody Bag (that's on sale for $16), the $13 FashionPuzzle Small Dome Chain Strap Crossbody Bag , and the Afkomst Crossbody Bag , which has a similar gold buckle detail in the center. For extra flair, I also spotted this on-sale Fossil crossbody that has a color-blocking print and a roomy build.

Milmo 1813 Tote Bag

Milmo's 1813 isn’t just another tote bag, it’s a lifesaver for travel. I often use it as a personal item (paired with my Vuori jumpsuit ) when flying because of its versatility and roominess. I also love that it has a removable and washable interior liner that easily comes out with snap buttons; I don’t have to over-worry about spills and messes (the company also offers a two-year warranty on any defects outside of normal wear and tear).

Its durable rope handles, which attach along the lower half of the bag, can hold up to 300 pounds, which is why it excels as a travel bag. As a tote, it's elegant, structured design is boardroom-ready (with my PrettyGarden two-piece set) , but it can also be worn as the perfect off-duty bag thanks to its convertible crossbody straps (I can sport it around town in the Vuori jumpsuit or Duer duo when I want to be hands-free). The exterior zip pockets allow for quick and easy access to your essentials while in line at the airport or a local eatery. It comes in four colors, but my choice is green.

Over at Amazon, you can replicate the look by adding the KouLi Buir Quilted Tote Bag ($40) or Missnine Laptop Tote Bag ($30) to your cart. But, if you want vast color options, I recommend the Wrangler Vintage Convertible Tote , which is available in 33 hues and is currently on sale for $49.

Everlane Day Glove Flats

While I’m a huge fan of my Mansur Gavriel flats , I usually opt for Everlane's Day Gloves when I'm traveling because they’re just so comfortable and sleek. Praised for their buttery soft leather, the shoes mold to your feet for easy movement and endless support. I can take on a full day of walking wearing them. The rubber soles create a solid foundation and provide grippy traction on uneven and slick surfaces.

Made in an Italian factory, they come in 13 colors and sizes from 5 to 11, with the option for narrow or comfort width. I own several colors and rotate them when traveling. Plus, they hardly take up any room in my suitcase, which is always a win if you're a carry-on-only traveler, and can help spruce up professional outfits like the PrettyGarden vest and wide-leg pants , or make laidback styles like the Duer trucker jacket , matching pants , and Minnow sweater dressier.

Their comfort is hard to match, but Amazon shoppers assure that the Trary Mary Jane Flats are another supportive option (and they're only $35). You can also get the Square-Toe Ankle Strap Ballet Flats , which are teacher-approved , from DreamPairs for $33. Knit flat fans can score the popular Frank Mully Pointed-Toe Flats for $36 thanks to a limited-time deal.

best travel jacket with many pockets

How many pockets do you actually need on your hiking jacket?

W hen you’re seeking out a new jacket for hiking, whether it’s a waterproof jacket to keep the rain off, a softshell for blustery days, a fleece jacket that can double as a mid layer , or a cozy down jacket for winter hikes , you know you want it to have pockets. But how many pockets do you really need in your hiking jacket?

If a jacket doesn’t have enough pockets, reviewers will definitely complain, but does that mean every jacket should just have every pocket imaginable? And if not, where is the most practical place for your pockets to be? After all, picking out the perfect jacket and dropping a wad of cash on it only to discover you can’t easily access the pockets or they’re too small to fit your gear would be an expensive mistake.

In truth, what pockets you need and where you need them depends a bit on you. For example, I prefer to keep just about everything in my hiking backpack except for my phone, which I like to have handy for taking pictures, so I don’t really mind if my jackets only have a couple of pockets. But if you like to stuff your pockets full with your map and compass , hiking gloves and hat , you’re going to need a bit more zippered real estate.

Furthermore, the Science of Pocketry probably also depends a bit on the jacket. If it’s a waterproof jacket that you only throw on occasionally, you might just want enough room for your phone, but if it’s a softshell or fleece that’s your primary hiking jacket, you might want more nooks and crannies for your granola bars and chapstick. It all depends.

Let’s take a look at the types of pocket you’ll usually find on a hiking jacket, when they’re useful and any drawbacks to help you in your quest to find the perfect pocket formula.

Hand warming pockets

Hand warming pockets are the official name of the two standard pockets that are in front of your hips, since you could, if you wanted to, walk with your hands in those pockets to keep them warm. Obviously, you can also wear gloves and keep these pockets free for gear too.

They’re obviously handy when you’re only wearing the jacket, but they can become a bit of a nuisance when you use the hip belt of your backpack, because you suddenly find that you can't easily unzip your pockets, and the gear in your pockets is getting squashed against your body. Also, if you stuff them really full, it can be a bit uncomfortable to climb steep slopes, scramble or sit down for a break.

Napoleon pockets

The term Napoleon pocket isn’t always used to describe these pockets and initially referred to that pocket that you sometimes find on the left side of your chest that has a vertical zip (where Napoleon might put his hand during his portrait painting session).

Nowadays, some great jackets are coming with two of these pockets, one on each side, such as the Jack Wolfskin Kammweg 3l Jacket and The North Face Stolemberg 3L Dryvent Jacket , which have been two of my favorite items to test this season. These are usually, but not always, in lieu of hand warming pockets and you use the right hand to unzip and access the left pocket and the left hand to operate the right pocket. The genius of these pockets is that they can be quite roomy, and they usually fall below the sternum strap and above the hip belt, so you can wear your backpack properly and have easy access to your gear. When they’re larger, they can easily hold items like a map or a bigger smartphone.

Chest pockets

Usually smaller and a bit higher than a Napoleon pocket, your jacket might feature a chest pocket and I usually use mine to hold my phone as it’s usually a bit snugger and holds my phone in place, and leaves my hand warming pockets for warming my hands. You probably wouldn’t see these in addition to Napoleon pockets, but they can add a little extra storage space to a jacket with hand warming pockets, such as the Patagonia Storm 10 women’s waterproof jacket . They also might be difficult to reach once you fasten your sternum strap, so again I’m in favor of Napoleon pockets even if my phone bounces around a little.

Inner pockets

Does your jacket need an exciting hidden pocket? These can be any size, may be inside your chest or lower, are often made from mesh and sometimes have zips and sometimes don’t. If you’re buying a waterproof jacket, there’s not really any great need for an inner pocket since the outer pockets should keep your gear dry and you don’t want to have to unzip in the rain to access your gear.

But if you’re shopping for, say a fleece or softshell where you might see a bit of rain, an inner pocket would secrete your valuables further away from any damaging moisture. Furthermore, an inner pocket can mean you can keep your phone closer to your body heat if you’re wearing a down jacket or softshell on a winter hike, which can keep the battery from dying , so they do hold some value.

Sleeve pockets

The best ski jackets will have a small, zipped pocket on the sleeve and the only reason that exists is so you can simply hold your arm out to get your ski pass scanned as you’re getting on the lift . It’s super handy for skiers and snowboarders, but there’s really no need for it in a jacket that you’re just going to wear hiking.

Other considerations when it comes to jacket pockets

So, it seems like there’s an argument to be made for just about any pocket on your hiking jacket, but do remember that the more zipped pockets your jacket has, the more bulk and weight you’re carrying on the hill. I personally like my jacket to have either two descent sized Napoleon pockets, or two hand warmer pockets plus a chest pocket.

Speaking of zips, though they add weight and bulk, they’re generally the best option when it comes to protecting your gear. They keep everything secured and dry better than velcro or poppers and while they can break, they’re also replaceable.

Finally, when weighing your pocket options, remember to consider size. As I’ve said, I don’t use mine a whole lot so they don’t need to be massive, but I’ve definitely heard from irate readers incensed that I didn’t mention whether a jacket I was reviewing had pockets big enough to carry their magnum-sized iPhone Pro Max (I also don’t carry a gigantic phone, sorry). You need to know what sort of gear you’re likely to want to carry in your jacket pockets and make sure the pockets are big enough before you take the tags off.

You know your hiking jacket needs pockets, but how many do you actually need, and where should they be for optimal access and gear protection?
