Greek isles: What to see, do and eat in Santorini, Corfu & Mykonos

Greek island cruises are on the bucket lists of many avid travelers thanks to the picturesque beauty, vibrant history and delicious cuisine of the region. So, what cruise shore excursions can you enjoy there?

Greek island cruises are a wonderful way to pack in the delights of Greece all in one trip without ever having to worry about getting from one hotspot to the next.

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) offers 10 days brimming with culture and cuisine onboard cruise ship Norwegian Breakaway, stopping at nine ports along the way.

The NCL vessel boasts 25 dining experiences plus three dedicated seafood venues as well as dazzling stage performances. Other highlights include The Waterfront – a quarter-mile oceanfront promenade lined with restaurants, bars and fab views – and The Aqua Park & Sports Complex, complete with five multistory waterslides.

Norwegian Breakaway’s Greek islands cruise from Rome (Civitavecchia) calls at Santorini, Corfu and Mykonos as well as a brilliant selection of Italian destinations , too.

We’ve taken a look at these three gorgeous Greek islands and what you can see, do and eat there on 2023 shore excursions with NCL (don’t read if you’re hungry!).

Oia Santorini greek island cruises

What to do in Santorini … for culture

The Greek island of Santorini is as picturesque as they come (just ask the influencers who flock there for the perfect sunset selfie) but its appeal isn’t just skin deep. As with the vast majority of vacation destinations in Greece , there’s rich culture and history to be found on Santorini.

On the NCL shore excursion ‘Go Local – Santorini’s Musical Heritage’ of this Greek islands cruise you’ll meet local craftsmen making traditional Greek musical instruments and visit the island’s former capital (and the largest preserved village on Santorini) Pyrgos, known for its 13th-century Venetian castle.

For further history, there’s the ‘Ancient Akrotiri & Wine Tasting’ outing. Bronze Age settlement Akrotiri was one of the most pivotal Minoan urban centres and ports in the Aegean, connecting to mainland Greece and as far as Egypt and Syria.

The town met its untimely devastation following a catastrophic volcanic eruption on Santorini in the 17th century BC which destroyed the island’s Minoan civilisation and left Akrotiri covered in ash. Today it is the most important prehistoric settlement in the Aegean and boasts fascinating excavations.

What to do in Santorini … for adventure

Santorini is a volcanic island – indeed, the caldera here is one of the biggest active underwater volcanoes in the world.

To sate your thirst for adventure on Greek islands cruises, NCL offers a ‘Volcano Hiking’ excursion – take a boat ride to an active volcano and hike its gravel terrain on a steep and fast-paced 30-minute, 3/4 mile walk to the crater.

What to do in Santorini … for food & drink

Fava – a yellow split-pea purée usually served warm with olive oil and lemon – is probably the most famous dish in Santorini, but do also try the small, sweet Santorini tomatoes, apochti – seasoned and cured Pork loin often used to accompany fine wine, chlorotyri – a local goat’s milk cheese, as well as capers and white aubergine.

A number of Norwegian Cruise Line shore excursions include food and drink but to really immerse yourself in local cuisine opt for the ‘Greek Style Celebration – Opa!’ trip to the picturesque, clifftop village of Oia (above) on which you’ll enjoy the food, wine and dances of Greece at a lively Greek celebration. ‘Charming Oia & Winery’ is another alternative – visit a quality winery and taste some of the best wines in Santorini.

What to do in Santorini … for relaxation

If you’d rather soak up the sun and do very little on your Greek island cruise vacation – easy! NCL’s ‘Perivolos Beach Transfer’ will whisk you off to the longest black beach in Santorini and the crystal-clear water of the Aegean Sea on the island’s southeast coast.

Delos Mykonos boat transfer greek island cruises

What to do in Mykonos … for culture

From Mykonos you simply must visit the neighboring island of Delos (above), it’s the mythical birthplace of the Greek gods Artemis and Apollo and was one of the most sacred places of ancient Greece, attracting thousands of pilgrims from the 8th century BC onwards.

Interesting fact: the Athenians who dominated the island on and off for almost five hundred years initiated two “purifications” of Delos, the second of which, in 426/5 BC, forbade births and deaths on the island (seems tricky to control if you ask us). Unfortunately, Delos never recovered from Romans razing the island in 88 BC – the population dwindled, ancient ruins were plundered and, during Ottoman occupation, it became a pirate stronghold.

Excavations of the archaeological site of Delos began in 1873 thanks to The French School of Archaeology and it is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Look out for statues of the lions dedicated to the Sanctuary of Apollo (above right), The House of Dionysus and The House of the Trident with their impressive mosaics, and the ancient theatre of Delos to name a few highlights. Join NCL shore excursion ‘Delos: Birthplace of Artemis & Apollo’ on Greek islands cruises to learn all about the famous site.

What to do in Mykonos … for food & drink

Mykonos’ rustic sausages are renowned here. They’re seasoned with a Greek savoury spice known as ‘throubi’, typically have a higher lean meat content than fat and are often paired with local wine or traditional ouzo.

For cheese, there’s tyrovolia (a fresh soft cheese used in various recipes), kopanisti (soft, fermented, spiced and often spread on bread) and ksinotiro (a sour-tasting option often used for pasta).

Mosta is a common meze dish in Mykonos consisting of barley rusks, kopanisti, tomato, olive oil, oregano and salt while Melopita (a sweet tart made with fresh tyrovolia cheese, honey and cinnamon) is one of the most popular pies on the island.

The ‘Mykonos On Foot’ shore excursion with NCL takes you through the streets of the island so you’ll have plenty of opportunity to pop into shops and stock up, plus a snack is provided.

What to do in Mykonos … for relaxation

For a chilled beach day, sign up for ‘Mykonos Beach Transfer’. Just a short drive from your ship are golden sandy beaches, transparent waters and a whole lot of you-time. The perfect opportunity to get stuck into that airport thriller you picked up.

Old Fortress of Corfu, greek island cruises

What to do in Corfu … for culture

Norwegian Cruise Line has a wealth of Corfu shore excursions that will ensure vacationers get their fix of culture – you’re spoiled for choice!

On the ‘Old Fortress & Gourmet’ outing, guests will explore The Old Fortress of Corfu (above), one of the most impressive fortifications in Europe. It was built by the Venetians in the 15th century on the site of a former Byzantine castle and later added to by the British in the 18th century. The Public Library of Corfu, once the barracks, is located here and hosts rare manuscripts and editions. The fortress overlooks Corfu’s Old Town and offers stunning views.

Alternatively, join the ‘Mons Repos Palace & Corfu Town’ shore excursion. Mons Repos – a neoclassical mansion built in 1831 – was famously the birthplace of Prince Philip. Nowadays it is a museum and visitors can explore the 258-acre park bursting with exotic plants.

On this trip you’ll drive along the coastal road of Perama and stop for snaps of pretty Mouse Island (or Pontikonisi) – so-called due to its diminutive size (although according to mythology, Pontikonisi was the ship of Greek hero Odysseus before the God Poseidon turned it to rock); you can’t miss the 13th-century Byzantine church of Pantokrator which dominates the islet. Travelers can then stroll through Corfu’s Old Town to see the historical sites.

What to do in Corfu … for adventure

If you think four legs are better than two, try the ‘Horseback Riding & Beach’ excursion to soak up the scenery of Corfu’s northern coast or, if you’d prefer wheels to hooves, there’s the ‘Mountain Bike Expedition’ on which you can explore the beautiful and picturesque villages of Corfu by bike accompanied by a guide.

Alternatively, put your name down for the ‘4×4 Adventure’ to admire the countryside, olive groves and the glistening Ionian Sea from the comfort of a vehicle.

What to do in Corfu … for food & drink

Sofrito (veal cooked in wine sauce, garlic and white pepper) is famous on Corfu and fresh fish is excellent – try some fried with Greek spicy sauce savoro! Tsigareli is a common veggie option – boiled leafy greens cooked with chopped onion, garlic, red hot pepper and salt – and Kataifi and Baklavà are among the popular cakes to taste if you fancy something sweet.

To enjoy traditional food on the island, the ‘Best of Corfu’ tour is a great shout. Not only will you tour the island but you’ll also tuck into a traditional lunch with live entertainment at a local taverna.

Meanwhile, ‘Scenic Island & Flavors’ ensures you sample local favourites and visit a traditional Koum Kouat distillery. The fruit was imported in 1850 by the British and is today used to produce the island’s famous liqueur.

What to do in Corfu … for relaxation

Yes, there’s a beach excursion put on by NCL but why not embrace the regal vibe of the island and join the ‘Catamaran Tour in Corfu’? You’ll sail between Corfu and the mainland, stop for swimming opportunities and tuck into an onboard feast all to the backdrop of the region’s beautiful scenery.

Right, we’re off to buy some feta from Sainsbury’s and watch Mamma Mia.

When I was deciding on what excursions to take on my upcoming cruise, I found it so helpful to read the reviews on NCL's website. Some excursions that sounded great had some terrible reviews and others enlightened me that it might be an hour catamaran ride followed by a 45 minute bus ride to get to a particular place (something I wouldn't be interested in).

One thing I did notice is that most excursions only had a few reviews (maybe a few had 10 or more but that was the minority).

Considering the thousands of people who take excursions, I was surprised that there weren't more reviews.

To those who post them, thank you. And if you do take a ship-sponsored trip, I would love to read about your experience. It really helps especially with the high cost involved for most of them.

I am a "Top 10" shoreex reviewer on NCL.com. The majority of the reviews that I have done over the years are no longer on the NCL website. I've never tied to figure out how it all works.

I had originally assumed that between seasons, tours were removed from the website when they were no longer offered. Then when the cruise line contracts with a tour provider for the next season, they were created with no reviews. Now I just don't know.

All I can say is that there were many more reviews written than what you find on the web site.

You would be shocked at how many posters just walk aimlessly around the ports and don't venture further...so no reviews needed

Many just take a cab to the beach...which is a perfect thing to do in the Carib...so no reviews

Something to remember is that when booking an ncl excursion....you are basically using the same operators that you would book if booking on your own

Price notwithstanding....it is quite likely that you won't even be able to book a particular say snorkel excursion on your own in many case as ncl has already booked the boats for their excursions

When you can find a private snorkel excursion the prices are usually very high but you are getting more time

While you can dig around to find one I myself have found it easier to do certain excursions through the ship

Fwiw the last thing I want or need is a bus tour of an island. If I book ncl tours I want snorkeling or I can just grab a cab to a beach....which btw in a place like st kitts will also get you a stop on a mountaintop to see the monkeys and where the Atlantic and Carib meet.

Any taxi driver worth their salt in st kitts knows to stop there if you are going to that part of the island

99% of the time I am cruising solo so I only take NCL excursions because I don't feel comfortable jumping in a taxi alone.

I love going to the beach and for my upcoming cruise, I was about to book a certain beach excursion when I decided to read the reviews. Most of them talked about how rocky the beach was, lots of seaweed and how the local vendors refused to leave you alone. Not my idea of fun so I nixed the idea.

Fortunately by continuing to read additional reviews, I found the perfect beach trip.

I submitted a review of an excursion in Tangier that was a bit critical - NCL never published it.

Check out the ports of call you are visiting here on CC you will get more info than you will ever find on NCL's web site. Or any one ships web site.

Or check out Trip advisor.

The posted ones are approved by NCL so not everything gets posted.

That's too bad because I would think it would help others make an informed decision. I've also written some critical (yet honest) reviews and have had both my positive and negative ones published.

I don't actually believe you would be solo in a taxi to the beach anyway.

They usually wait until the van is full or semi full and then try to agree on a pick up time at the beach for the group

That's been our experience anyway

We get in taxi...with others whom we do not know...but who usually are agreeable to whatever beach the group wants....although you can go to any beach you want but the dispatchers know to group riders by beach preference....then....

Upon drop off at the beach the group usually agrees to a pick up time....as no one wants to miss the ship

Its all very civilized and easy

The group can agree to make sure they locate you before they leave just to be sure you don't miss the ride back

No need to stay with them at the beach but honestly just agree to meet up at agreed upon time

All pax have the same concerns so you will be ok doing this IMHO

I have to debate the NCL sanctioned excursions. Coming off the Getaway back in the end of April, this was the first time I booked third party excursions (and one NCL) for this trip. And to be honest, I did a lot of reading here (CC) and with TripAdvisor to select my excursions. The cost savings is substantial when you are a family; (I had two adults and two kids). Every NCL excursion was a budget buster and I saved at least close to $200 per excursion going third party. Each one had absolute assurances to make sure you didn't miss your boat. Many rely on reviews to maintain their business model and they know we (Americans) like to speak our mines so many won't risk a bad review.

I did Cozumel (last port) on NCL as a "last minute" selection since we had nothing planned. The cost was the highest of all the excursions.

Do your homework and have confidence that there are plenty of good third party excursions out there.

Hope this helps.

Don't forget to join your roll call and go to the Meet & Greet! Most people on the roll call have already researched/arranged independent tours (many based on Trip Advisor reviews and are looking for people to round out their groups. If the groups are full, you can contact the tour operator directly about starting another group.

We have never done a ship-operated tour, most because they are so expensive, and the groups are always sooo large! On private tours, you have smaller groups/buses, so it is easier and faster to get around/stay ahead of the ship tours.

On our most recent cruise, we met up with a couple from our M&G. The husband would go ashore as soon as the ship was cleared, survey all the tour operators selling tours, and then negotiate a price for a group of us (made up of M&G'ers and other people we met on the cruise). We ended up saving a ton of money on these private excursions, and the service was often better because the companies are smaller and more reliant on good reviews on sites such as TA.

Last three posts = great suggestions!

Has this not changed in the last 6-years?  Still no way to post a tour review (I just poked around for 20 minutes and couldn't figure it out)?  The descriptions on their reviews leaves MUCH to be desired (ex. recent "7 hour tour including Mayan ruins etc"....but 6 of it is BUS transport time).

I guess as the seller (and profiter), they are likely not going to want any negative reviews so I suppose I am not surprised, but I never realized they were so curated.

Happycrafter123

I really wish there were reviews posted for the NCL excursions too.  Upcoming Baltic cruise, and I’ve compared prices with other tour operators, when factoring in the free at sea discount, it really is about the same price give or take a couple dollars as going with non-NCL operators, but not sure of the quality, and really don’t like the risk of missing boat….

Best bet is to search in the port of call forums. That's where you'll get unfiltered and honest opinions on the best (and worst) cruise-sponsored tours, as well as options for ones found via Viator or private companies.

Not Bird travels but I posted reviews of about 14 Mediterranean ncl excursions on this review.  It was just prior to the pandemic but same excursions still on offer through ncl so you might get some ideas.

Thanks

Sorry. They were NCL reviews which are probably OBE. The pandemic cancelled our last med cruise and we have been staying closer to home since.

NCL's Free at Sea promotion: What to know before you book

MICHAEL DEYOUNG/NCL

Want a more inclusive experience on a large cruise ship filled with dining choices and activities? If so, Norwegian Cruise Line 's Free at Sea promotion might be just the ticket. This promo provides a number of "free" perks to guests based on the length of their cruise and the stateroom category booked ... but what does the fine print say? Are the perks really free?

In this piece, we're diving into everything you need to know about Norwegian's Free at Sea promotion so there are no surprises when it comes time to book your cruise.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Overview of Norwegian Cruise Line's Free at Sea promotion

norwegian breakaway shore excursions

Norwegian's Free at Sea promotion offers guests several perks covered by the cruise fare, with the number often dependent upon the length of the cruise and the stateroom category chosen.

The choice of perks occasionally changes, but Norwegian typically offers the following five: a free drinks package, free specialty dining, free shore excursions, free Wi-Fi and free third and fourth guests in a cabin. Occasionally, free airfare or a 50% air credit for the second person in a cabin is also a Free at Sea option.

The Free at Sea promotion runs almost constantly, with the exact inclusions varying depending on which version of the promotion NCL is running at the time. Currently, you can book and receive all of the Free at Sea perks, though you can decline any you do not wish to receive.

Previously, you could choose the number of Free at Sea perks based on your cabin category. For example, if you booked a studio or interior cabin, you could only choose one perk. Oceanviews, balconies and minisuites could pick a few, while suites and The Haven staterooms received all perks. This version of the deal could come back, but we've been seeing it less frequently than we used to.

Note that this promotion only applies to voyages three nights or longer, and all passengers sharing a cabin must choose the same offers (if there is a choice). Those booking a "Sail Away" (guarantee) cabin are ineligible for Free at Sea. Charter sailings are ineligible as well.

What's included in NCL's Free at Sea promotion?

norwegian breakaway shore excursions

Let's take a look at what each Free at Sea perk entails and dive into the fine print, so you know exactly what you are (and aren't) getting.

Free Unlimited Open Bar package

The Unlimited Open Bar Package is Norwegian Cruise Line's base drinks package . The drinks package typically costs $109 per person, per day, plus a 20% gratuity, so it is by far the most popular perk chosen with the Free at Sea promotion (when a choice is offered).

The package includes unlimited soda and juice, beer and wine by the glass worth under $15, and select premium cocktails and spirits worth under $15. A 20% discount applies to bottles of wine and Champagne, wine and spirit experiences, tastings and flights purchased on board.

Related: Are cruise line drinks packages worth it?

The package does not include Starbucks, ice bars, room service, bottled water, beer buckets, designated "super" premium brands, minibar purchases, freshly squeezed juices, wine dispensers or energy drinks.

Here's what you need to know before you choose a beverage package as one of your Free at Sea offers: It's not really "free." You still have to pay the 20% gratuity on the full value of the package. This means that if you're 21 or older, you'll have to pay $21.80 per person, per day for "free" drinks. (That's $152.60 for a seven-night sailing.) If you're the first or second guest in a cabin and under 21 (meaning you have the soda package), you must pay $1.59 per person, per day.

If you drink alcohol and plan to enjoy it during your cruise, chances are good that choosing this perk will be well worth the daily gratuity you're charged. If you don't think you'll drink $22 worth of extra-fee beverages, alcoholic or not, per day, choose another perk or flat-out decline this Free at Sea offer. You'll end up saving money in the long run.

The drink packages extend to Norwegian Cruise Line's private island in the Bahamas , Great Stirrup Cay. They do not extend to the line's private destination in Belize, Harvest Caye.

This Free at Sea perk is available to the first through eighth guests on a reservation who are ages 21 and older. If the first and/or second guest in a cabin is under 21, they will receive Norwegian Cruise Line's Unlimited Soda Package (valued at $9.95 per person, per day) as a substitution. If additional guests and beyond are under 21, they will not receive a substitution for this perk. If you're 21 or older but do not drink, you cannot opt for the soda package instead.

Free specialty dining

With the free specialty dining Free at Sea perk, you'll get an included dining package, which lets you dine in one or more specialty restaurants without having to pay the per-person cost and without having to buy the package separately.

Through Free at Sea, the dining package applies to the first and second guests on a reservation who must be at least 2 years old. Here's a breakdown of how many specialty restaurant meals you get if you choose this perk, based on the length of the cruise and the cabin category you have.

You are subject to a 20% gratuity (based on NCL's assessment of the package's value), so as with the beverage package, the package isn't technically "free."

  • Three- to six-night cruise, any cabin: one meal ($59 value, $11.80 gratuity/package)
  • Seven- to 11-night cruise, studio, inside or oceanview cabin: one meal ($59 value, $11.80 gratuity/package)
  • Seven- to 11-night cruise, balcony cabin or above: two meals ($99 value, $19.80 gratuity/package)
  • Twelve-night cruise or longer, studio, inside or oceanview cabin: two meals ($99 value, $19.80 gratuity/package)
  • Twelve-night cruise or longer, balcony cabin or above: three meals ($139 value, $27.80 gratuity/package)

Restaurants that you can use your specialty dining perk toward include Cagney's Steakhouse, La Cucina, Food Republic, Le Bistro, Moderno Churrascaria, Q Texas Smokehouse, Teppanyaki, Los Lobos, Ocean Blue, Bayamo and Onda by Scarpetta.

At a la carte restaurants, the dining package limits you to one appetizer, one soup or salad, one main course and one dessert. At Cagney's and Le Bistro, you are also limited to one main course per person (in addition to starters and desserts). Additional main courses are charged at the a la carte menu price.

Harvest Caye restaurants, The Bake Shop, the Ice Cream Bar, gelato, specialty items in the Asian restaurant, Jazz Brunch, and Wine Lovers and Murder Mystery lunches are not included as part of the specialty dining packages.

Free shore excursions

norwegian breakaway shore excursions

If you plan to book shore excursions through the cruise line, this perk will likely be well worth it.

You don't necessarily get free excursions, though. Instead, you get a $50 shore excursion credit for the first guest on the cruise reservation in each port. Unlike some Free at Sea offers, this perk does not apply to the second guest. If the tour costs less than $50, no refund is issued. If it costs more than $50, you must pay the difference.

The credit does not apply to Great Stirrup Cay and Harvest Caye equipment rentals. Pre-cruise and post-cruise land tours, private tours and custom shore excursions are not eligible for this promotion; however, group debarkation-day tours are eligible. The first guest may redeem the $50 credit on more than one shore excursion per port but not tickets for them and a travel companion on the same tour.

If a port call or shore excursion is canceled, you'll be refunded the amount you paid. This means that if your shore excursion costs more than $50, you'll only be refunded the amount you paid above $50; you won't be refunded for the credit.

Related: Avoid these 10 mistakes when booking cruise shore excursions

The free Wi-Fi perk does not give you unlimited internet access for the entire cruise. Instead, you get a number of free minutes, depending on the length of your sailing.

For a voyage that's three to six nights long, you get 75 minutes of internet per person. Seven- to 11-night cruises include 150 minutes of internet per person, while 12-night or longer sailings include 300 minutes of internet per person. Choosing Wi-Fi as one of your Free at Sea offers is actually free, as it includes the activation fee.

This offer applies to the first and second guests in a stateroom. Two logins are provided per stateroom, with each package able to be used on one device at a time. It does not allow for streaming.

Related: Wi-Fi on cruise ships: 5 things to know about internet use on board

If you think you'll need more internet, you can upgrade to Unlimited Wi-Fi or Unlimited Premium Wi-Fi (with streaming) for a discounted price as compared to the outright cost of those internet packages. This discount is thanks to a "credit" of the value of the minutes that are included in Free at Sea.

Free 3rd and 4th passengers in a cabin

This perk is not available on every sailing, so check before you book if you wish to take advantage of this freebie. Voyages during popular family cruise times (such as school breaks and summer) will not usually have this perk as an option.

The third and fourth guests staying in a cabin will either be free or pay $99 each with the first two guests paying full fare. No deposit is required for the third and fourth guests, but they do have to pay taxes and port fees. The exact charge for these taxes and fees varies based on the cruise length and itinerary but can be over $200 per person on some seven-day voyages.

Can I opt out of Free at Sea?

norwegian breakaway shore excursions

If your cruise booking comes with more Free at Sea perks than you want, you do not have to choose the amount you are allotted; you can decline any or all Free at Sea perks. For example, if your booking includes all current Free at Sea offers, but you know you won't drink enough soda, specialty beverages or alcohol to warrant the daily gratuity on the Free Open Bar package, you can decline that perk altogether.

If you choose to decline perks, remember that you can't transfer them to anyone else and won't receive any monetary value for giving them up.

Travelers on a tight budget who don't feel the need to take advantage of the Free at Sea perks can also consider booking a "Sail Away" (guarantee) cabin. Booking a guarantee cabin means choosing a cabin category but not a specific cabin on the ship. Closer to the sail date, the cruise line will assign you a cabin within the chosen category. Guarantee cabins are cheaper than booking a specific stateroom and are excluded from the Free at Sea promotion.

What is Free at Sea Plus?

If you want even more perks, you can upgrade to Free at Sea Plus for $49 per person, per day. If the second guest is a child, their upgrade is $29 per day.

Here's what you get with Free at Sea Plus:

  • The Unlimited Open Bar Package is upgraded to the Premium Plus Beverage Package. It includes all top-shelf cocktails and spirits; all beer, Champagne and wine by the glass; unlimited soda and juice; unlimited still and sparkling bottled water; all Starbucks coffee and specialty drinks; and energy drinks. It also includes select premium bottles of wine and Champagne with dinner, as well as 40% off all other bottles.
  • Two additional specialty dining meals for the first and second guests
  • A shore excursion credit of $50 for the second guest
  • Unlimited Wi-Fi (no streaming) for the first and second guests

The third guest on a reservation and beyond must purchase the Premium Plus Beverage Package if the first and second guests purchase Free at Sea Plus. They receive it at a reduced rate of $34.80 per person, per day, including gratuity.

If the second guest is a child, they get the same perks except for the Premium Plus Beverage Package; they would still receive the soda package.

Guests who upgrade to Free at Sea Plus can upgrade their unlimited Wi-Fi package to include streaming for an additional $10 per person, per day (applicable to the first and second guests only).

Frequently asked questions about NCL's Free at Sea

norwegian breakaway shore excursions

Still have a question about Free at Sea that hasn't been covered yet? We address additional concerns below.

Does Free at Sea include daily gratuities?

Sometimes, free daily gratuities pop up as a Free at Sea perk option, but not often. Most of the time, you'll have to pay the daily service charge as normal. It's $20 per person, per day for Club Balcony Suite staterooms and below, and $25 per person, per day for those staying in suites or The Haven. Babies and toddlers ages 2 and under are not subject to the daily service charge.

Does Free at Sea include airfare?

Occasionally, one of the Free at Sea perks is free airfare for the second guest on a reservation when the first guest also books airfare through Norwegian Cruise Line. This offer applies to seven-night or longer voyages and provides economy, round-trip flights from select departure gateways.

Solo travelers paying 200% of the voyage fare qualify for free airfare when offered. You are not eligible for the free air promotion if you book at the last minute (reservations must be made more than 110 days prior to sailing to qualify) or if you choose a Sail Away (guarantee) cabin.

If considering this perk, keep in mind that choosing it puts your air travel arrangements in the hands of Norwegian Cruise Line. While the flights they choose may be convenient and what you would choose yourself, they could also involve less-than-ideal timing, routing and layovers that you could avoid by booking your own air travel.

While this is a perk to consider if you want the cruise line to handle as much of your vacation as possible or you're looking to save on flights, it isn't one we'd recommend you choose.

Do Pride of America cruises offer the same perks?

Hawaii voyages aboard NCL's Honolulu-based ship, Pride of America, offer the same Free at Sea inclusions but have a beverage package perk that's a bit different from the traditional Free at Sea Open Bar package.

The Hawaii Beverage Package perk applies to the first through eighth guests on the reservation and includes a variety of drinks worth up to $15. Those who choose this perk must pay the gratuities, which are $19.80 per person, per day. The retail value of the Hawaii Beverage Package is $99 per person, per day.

The terms and conditions say, "The purchase of any alcoholic drinks within the Hawaii Beverage Package may, in certain individual circumstances, be restricted in accordance with Hawaii's Intoxicating Liquor Law and applicable local rules and regulations."

In addition to alcoholic beverages, the Hawaii package includes fountain soda, fresh juice, bottled water, nonalcoholic beer and specialty coffee ordered in the dining rooms only. It doesn't include specialty coffee outside the restaurants, room service, minibar purchases or vending machine purchases.

The main difference between the Hawaii Beverage Package and NCL's normal beverage package is that the Hawaii package includes specialty coffee in the main dining rooms while the normal one does not.

What else must I know about the NCL's Free at Sea promotion?

Here are some terms and conditions of the Free at Sea promotion:

  • Free at Sea selections must be chosen at least 24 hours prior to sailing and cannot be changed once on board.
  • For bookings made within 24 hours of departure, Free at Sea perks are chosen at the time of booking.
  • Solo travelers paying 200% of the per-person voyage fare qualify for Free at Sea.
  • Free at Sea is a cruise-only offer — it does not apply to the land portion of Cruisetours.

Bottom line

If you book a specific cabin with Norwegian Cruise Line, some form of the Free at Sea promotion is almost guaranteed to be included in your reservation. Free at Sea is a great value if you plan to fully take advantage of each perk. If some inclusions work for you but others do not, carefully consider whether the value is worth the cost (i.e., gratuities). Don't be afraid to decline any perks you don't want.

Best Canada/New England Shore Excursions

norwegian breakaway shore excursions

Canada/New England itineraries aren't just limited to fall foliage runs these days. In fact, the sailing season in this postcard-perfect region actually spans a full six months (from May through October). We've set out to round up some of the very best excursions offered by both cruise lines and independent outfitters alike in the region's 10 most popular ports. Whether the great outdoors, historical sites or foodie-focused outings are more your speed, you'll find it on a Canada/New England cruise.

On This Page

Bar harbor, maine, boston, massachusetts, charlottetown, prince edward island, halifax, nova scotia, montreal, quebec, newport, rhode island, portland, maine, quebec city, quebec, saint john, new brunswick, sydney, nova scotia.

Acadia National Park

For nature lovers, Acadia National Park -- with an entry point set just a few miles away from the Bar Harbor port -- is the hands-down highlight of any New England sailing circuit. With nearly 160 miles of hiking trails, this rugged natural oasis delivers cruisers into dramatic rocky headlands abutting the Atlantic and come filled with beaches, cliffs, woods, lakes, ponds and peaks (seven precisely, each of which soar above 1,000 feet).

Many cruise lines and independent operators bring passengers to tackle the terrain on scenic tour bus/trolley tours with stops for photo ops and view points, though these outings can get crowded during peak periods. If physically possible, consider signing up instead for an outing that will get you some proper on-the-ground hiking time with more elbow room to spare: One such easy-to-navigate and commonly offered guided trek is on the waterfront Ocean Trail.

Fenway Park Boston, Massachusetts (Photo: Eric Broder Van Dyke/Shutterstock)

Fenway Park

Any baseball fan or history buff who wants to walk the hallowed ground of Babe Ruth's first home, the oldest Major League Baseball stadium in the U.S. (dating to 1912) and the home of nine-time World Series winners the Boston Red Sox needs to visit legendary Fenway Park. On a guided tour, you'll take in highlights, such as the famous "red seat" (which marks the point of the longest home run within the park) and the hand-operated scoreboard, before getting some time to browse the official Red Sox gift shop.

Bonus: Baseball season overlaps nicely with scheduled cruising to the region; if your port visit syncs with one (or if Boston is your embarkation or disembarkation point), you might be able to catch a home game independently. Notably for cruisers, early-afternoon home games are scheduled on select dates (mostly on weekends) from April through September.

Boston by Duck

Boston loves its Ducks -- these amphibious WWII-style vehicles are a city institution. And it's certainly a unique means by which to explore the many areas that you might not otherwise get to see. Kids (of all ages) will love riding the Ducks throughout the city, before splashing straight into the Charles River. Many of Boston's highlights are featured en route, including Boston Common, parts of the Freedom Trail, Cambridge and even a glimpse of Fenway.

"Anne of Green Gables" and Island Drive

Peggy's Cove, Halifax, Nova Scotia (Photo: Denna Jiang/Shutterstock)

Peggy's Cove

Gigantic boulders worn smooth by millions of years of pounding Atlantic waves surround the natural landscape here, anchored by a picturesque century-old lighthouse (the most photographed in Nova Scotia). About a 45-minute drive from Halifax, this picture-perfect setting is Peggy's Cove, a tiny fishing village complete with bobbing lobster boats and colorful homes and shops.

Titanic -- The Halifax Connection

You can watch the movies and read the books, but it's hard to get much closer than this for truly contextualizing the Titanic disaster. It's been just over a century since the Titanic sank about 750 miles from Halifax; 150 of the victims are still buried there, and the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic has engaging exhibits and artifacts chronicling the disaster.

This tour will connect the dots, while you view actual items from the Titanic, hear the stories and lore that grew from the ship's sinking and learn more about the overall role that Halifax played in the aftermath.

Classic City Highlights

When you're in a big city like Montreal (a popular starting and ending point for regional cruises), you'll have to accept that you just won't make a real dent in it without extending your trip. An especially good fit for those short on time or with mobility issues, a classic, half-day, guided city sightseeing coach tour takes in most of the essential highlights, with photo stops at essential spots, such as Notre-Dame Basilica, Saint Joseph's Oratory, Mount Royal Park, Olympic Stadium and Old Montreal.

Walking Tour of Old Montreal

If you'd rather immerse yourself a bit more by pounding some pavement in the city, Old Montreal is an excellent quarter to tackle. A guided walking tour here brings you through the historic nabe's labyrinthine streets, with its French-flavored atmosphere and sights, such as Notre-Dame Basilica, Champ de Mars, City Hall, Place Jacques-Cartier and Bonsecours Market. Cliff Walk, Newport, Rhode Island (Photo: Gianpaolo_Photo/Shutterstock)

Cliff Walk and the Breakers

Newport is best known for two things: its collection of lavish Gilded Age mansions and its pretty seaside setting. Combine a taste of both on a tour that brings cruisers for a guided stroll along the scenic Cliff Walk, along with a visit to its most famous mansion, the Breakers.

The easy coastal trail brings you past beaches, rocky shores and several grand Gilded Age homes. The Breakers, considered to be Newport's most elaborate mansion, was a retreat for the affluent Vanderbilt family. Architect Richard Morris Hunt designed its Italian Renaissance style, and its interiors overflow with opulence; 70 rooms brim with fine furnishings, works of art and soaring ceilings embellished by chandeliers.

Portland Discovery by Land and Sea

Explore Portland's highlights both on the ground and by sea via its most popular shore tour. You'll hop aboard an open-air trolley for a lay of the land and a glimpse of the landmarks of Portland proper, before making way for the photogenic Portland Head Light lighthouse. There's then a break for lunch and shopping in the Old Port area, before embarking on a 90-minute narrated boat tour of the harbor, which will bring you up close to several lighthouses, Civil War-era forts and inner-bay islands frequented by harbor seals and seabirds.

Foodie Walking Tour

Portland's culinary scene, powered by locally sourced ingredients from both land and sea, is simply world class; in fact, it was once named "Restaurant City of the Year" by Bon Appetit Magazine. See what the buzz is about by digging in on a foodie walking tour of Portland, during which a guide will share his/her culinary savvy while escorting you to four of the city's most notable gastronomic establishments. You'll sample fare at four stops within walking distance of the port, which might include options like a brewery, bakery, bustling lunch spot or old-school food purveyor.

An impressive sight indeed, the falls measure nearly 100 feet higher than Niagara Falls and drop down to meet the St. Lawrence River below.

Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada (Photo: JHVEPhoto/Shutterstock)

Fundy By Land and Sea

One of the region's unique natural attractions is found in Saint John, where Canada's Bay of Fundy meets the Saint John River. Dubbed the Reversing Falls Rapids, the tides are so fierce here, it causes the river to reverse and run upstream. This bus tour brings you around town to take in Saint John highlights, including a photo op of the phenomenal bay at Fallsview Park. Plus, the excursion bundles in an enclosed sightseeing boat tour of Saint John Harbor and the Bay of Fundy, offering yet another perspective on the Reversing Falls Rapids.

Saint John City Market

Canada's oldest continuously operated farmers market is set within an easy 10-minute walk of the cruise port and makes for a delightful place to stroll and sample/shop for local fare and wares. Opened in 1785, with its current airy structure dating to 1876, you can pick up local handicrafts, peruse traditional farmers market stands or sit down to tuck into some local dishes.

Tip: Try a breakfast bagel topped with dulse, a tasty dried seaweed sourced from the Bay of Fundy, from old-time establishment Slocum & Ferris. (If you want some further insight on don't-miss grub, you can sign up for a guided food tour of the market, too.)

Alexander Graham Bell Museum and Village of Baddeck

From the port in Sydney on Nova Scotia's Cape Breton Island, two of the area's most worthwhile attractions can be combined on one seamless shore excursion. Hit up the pretty lakefront village of Baddeck -- set on Bras d'Or Lake (about an hour's drive from Sydney) -- known for its scenery and seafood eateries, where you'll have some time for an independent visit.

The village's big claim to fame, though, was serving as the longtime home to inventor Alexander Graham Bell. A museum here is dedicated to Bell's work via artifacts, photographs and multimedia exhibits. The museum does a good job at documenting his most famous invention, the telephone, while delving into his work in other fields, too, including medicine, science and technology.

Liquor & Beverage Policy

Effective for sailings July 15, 2016 and beyond, guests are prohibited from bringing any beverages -- including liquor, beer and non-alcoholic drinks such as water, soda and juices -- on board either as carry-on or checked luggage, with the exception of purified or distilled water in factory-sealed containers for use in conjunction with medical devices or for the reconstitution of infant formula; and fully sealed and/or corked wine bottles for personal consumption onboard that is subject to screening and a corkage fee (for guests 21 years of age or older). Open beverages of any kind must be consumed or discarded at the security check-point, on embarkation day and at any port of call. This revised policy brings the company in line with other best practise travel security protocols and reduces the need for individual time consuming screening and package inspection of large volumes of beverages.

Why the change in policy? The inspection of large volumes of beverages has an impact on the embarkation process and security resources. As one example, guests who attempt to smuggle alcoholic beverages onboard often try to do so in beverage containers. This means all beverages must be personally screened, taking both time and dedicated personnel. This modified policy will now bring us in line with other travel industry procedures for transporting beverages and allow security personnel to focus on other screening efforts and not individually inspecting all beverages being brought onboard. What if I purchase a beverage in a port of call? Guests will not be permitted to bring any beverages onboard the ship in ports of call and any locally-purchased beverages will be disposed of prior to embarkation. No open containers of beverages, including water, will be allowed onboard during a port of call. If you purchase any alcohol at one of our ports-of-call or in our onboard shops, we will safely store your purchase and either on the final night of the cruise or the morning of debarkation it will be available for pick up in a designated area. What happens if I bring a case of water to the ship? Guests who bring beverages to embarkation will be directed to return the items to their vehicle. If the guest does not have a vehicle onsite, the items will be disposed of. If I need to bring water or milk onboard for a medical reason or infant, what’s the process? Guests who have special needs, medical requirements, or families with infants who require water for formula or milk, should contact the access desk at [email protected] to verify if an exception can be made for their beverage and to obtain pre-approval to provide to security at embarkation. Is the water onboard safe to drink? All of our ships produce water in accordance with the guidelines and requirements as defined by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, U.S. Public Health Service, Centres for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Centre for Environmental Health. Can I still bring wine on board? Yes, guests may bring sealed bottles of wine on board for personal consumption. They will be checked prior to embarkation and a corkage fee applied at that time of $15.00 USD for a 750 ml Bottle or $30.00 USD for a 1,500 ml Magnum bottle. Box wines are not allowed on board. Guests who purchase a beverage package, or who have a beverage package as part of the Free At Sea promotion, will not be charged a corkage fee. Why can I bring wine but not other beverages? As very few guests bring wine onboard, the team is able to easily and quickly screen these items.

All guests are prohibited from bringing alcohol on board our ships. Please note that with the exception of Wine and Champagne, all guests are prohibited from bringing alcohol on board our ships. If you purchase any alcohol at one of our ports-of-call or in our onboard shops, we will safely store your purchase(s) and either on the final night of the cruise or the morning of debarkation it will be available for pick up in a designated area.

Wine & Champagne Policy

Guests may bring bottles of wine and champagne on board. When bottles are brought on board and served or consumed in any restaurant, public room area or in their stateroom, a corkage fee will be charged according to bottle sizes noted below.

750 ml Bottle: $15.00 USD

1,500 ml Magnum: $30.00 USD

Wine or champagne sent directly to the ship by travel agents, friends, family, etc. or from another retail source, are subject to the same fees. Box wines are not allowed on board.

Guests who purchase a beverage package, or who have a beverage package as part of the Free At Sea promotion, will not be charged a corkage fee.

Passengers must be 21 years of age or older to purchase or consume alcohol whilst in US sailings.

Parental consent is required for guests 18 to 20 to consume only beer and wine whilst vessels is in international waters. Authorisation will be given only when the accompanying parent completes the Young Adult Alcoholic Beverage Waiver form. This form can be obtained and completed at the Guest Services Desk upon embarkation of the vessel. In Alaska and Hawaii waters parental consent is NOT permitted for guests 18 to 20 years old.

Europe sailing permits young adults 18 to 20 to purchase and personally consume alcohol whilst onboard.

China/Asia: Do not serve or sell alcohol to guests under 21 years of age. Parental consent is NOT permitted for guests 18 to 20 whilst in China/ Asia waters.

Australia/New Zealand: Do not serve or sell alcohol to guests under 21 years of age. Parental consent is required for guests 18 to 20 to serve or sell only beer and wine whilst in international waters.

ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION POLICY

750 ml Bottle: $15.00 USD 1,500 ml Magnum: $30.00 USD

* Norwegian encourages the responsible use of alcohol and accordingly reserves the right to permanently or temporarily revoke the drinking privileges of any guest who violates Norwegian's Guest Code of Conduct or who is deemed a danger to himself, herself or others by vessel management. Continued abuse of alcohol whilst sailing and/or violation of Norwegian's alcohol policy may result in immediate disembarkation.

For more information read our FAQ about "Can I bring water or soda on board?"

Are service charges across the board for all guests? All guests 3 years or older.

How do I prepay my service charges? Contact your travel professional and request that it be added to your cruise reservation. If you have not made final payment this will be included in your final payment amount or if final payment has already been made we will require full payment at the time it is added.

At what point in the booking process can the prepaid charges be added? They can be added at anytime up to 24 hours prior to sailing.

Why would I prepay my service charges? The convenience of pre-paying the service charges allows you to plan your budget prior to your cruise giving you additional freedom whilst on board.

If I cancel my cruise are the service charges refundable? Yes! The service charges are 100% refundable.

If there is a service issue can the service charges be adjusted on board? Guest satisfaction is the highest priority at Norwegian Cruise Line. We have structured a guest satisfaction programme designed to handle any concerns about service or on-board product quickly and efficiently. However, in the event a service issue should arise during your cruise please let our on-board guest services desk staff know right away, so that we can address these in a timely manner. It is our goal to reach a satisfactory solution to any issue when it happens and make sure our guests can focus on enjoying their cruise. Should your concerns not be met with satisfaction you can adjust the charges.

The currency used on board our ships is the U.S. dollar. We've made paying for on-board expenses very easy. When you check in you open a shipboard account by registering a major credit card such as VISA®, MasterCard® or American Express® . If you prefer to pay by cash or traveller's cheques, a suggested deposit for a 7-night cruise is US dollar 300 per person, US dollar 150 per person for cruises up to 6 nights or US dollar 450 per person for cruises of 8 nights and more at check-in (subject to change). Then, you simply sign for your personal expenses as you go and they will be charged to your account.

Important : When your credit card is entered to activate your on-board account, an initial approval is obtained from the bank. Please be advised that some banks may hold the pre-authorisation for up to 30 days. Throughout the voyage incremental holds will be obtained based on your on-board expenditure. This will reduce the amount of available credit on the credit card or restrict the availability of cash in your bank account.

Travellers cheques and most major credit cards are accepted in the ports we visit. Proper ID is required when cashing travellers cheques. We recommend you carry a small amount of local currency when visiting foreign ports, although credit cards are commonly accepted in shops and restaurants.

Guests should bring a spare overnight bag because all suitcases are collected the night before we return to homeport.

Travel Tips:

  • • Luggage that is being hand-carried must be able to fit thru the x-ray machines, similar to airplanes if larger than that it must be checked. (Approximately 24" tall and 18" wide)
  • • We recommend that guests hand-carry medication, jewellery, breakables, or other valuables, an extra set of clothes for the first evening on board, and important documents (I.e Passports and Travel Documents)

In the event of a no-deal Brexit we don’t any expect changes to our published cruise itineraries.

However, we would ask that make yourself familiar with the UK Government's guidance on passport rules for travel after Brexit and that your passport is still valid, please use this tool to check.

We would also ask you to make sure you've taken out appropriate travel insurance for your Holiday as the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) will no longer be valid in the event of a no-deal Brexit. If you have an annual travel insurance policy, make sure to check the Terms and Conditions and contact your insurance provider for any queries.

PASSPORT TIPS

Check the date your passport expires. If we leave the EU without a deal, the UK Government recommends that you have six months left on your passport on the date of your arrival in an EU country. Note that the six months on your passport is only required if you are travelling after the date the UK leaves the EU. You should also check when your passport was renewed. If you renewed a 10-year adult passport before it expired, extra months may have been added to your passport’s expiry date. These extra months over 10 years will not count towards the 6 months that must be remaining. The UK Government has published a website tool to check the validity of your passport under these rules.

You can renew your passport online or by going to a Post Office with a Check and Send service. You may wish to renew your passport sooner rather than later, in order to make sure you have it in time for your holiday or travel plans.

Full details on renewing your passport can be found here .

VISA INFORMATION

The European Parliament has confirmed that UK travellers won’t need a visa to travel to the EU after Brexit for short-term business or leisure trips, even if the UK leaves without a deal. UK citizens will be able to visit the EU for up to 90 days within a 180-day period without a visa.

EUROPEAN HEALTH INSURANCE CARD AND TRAVEL INSURANCE TIPS

The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) provides EU citizens state medical care when travelling in another EU country. In the event of a no-deal Brexit, UK registered EHICs will no longer be valid.

  • Do I need an EHIC or travel insurance? Since there are limitations to EHIC, we always advise that having appropriate travel insurance is a good idea – whether you have an EHIC card or not.
  • It's important you obtain travel insurance and check that it covers your current circumstances, including any medical conditions. If you have an annual Travel Insurance policy, make sure to check the Terms and Conditions and contact your insurance provider if you're not sure.
  • It is also important that travellers are aware, that no matter the circumstance, a medical prescription distributed in the UK will no longer be valid in EU pharmacies. Therefore, travellers should ensure they have a suitable supply of any medication to last throughout their trip.

In order to comply with government regulations covering departure manifests, be sure to register online through our website ( www.ncl.eu ) after you have paid in full and before you leave on your Norwegian Cruise Line holiday. We strongly recommend that guests complete their Online Check-In at least one day before sailing, as otherwise they may be subject to an extended check-in procedure at the cruise terminal or may even be denied boarding.

Since recommended immunisations and other health precautions often change, we suggest that you contact your physician, the local public health department or the Centre for Disease Control in time before departure.

We welcome guests with special needs. The information you are provided with about your holiday (which may be on our website, in our brochures or elsewhere) before you make your booking will include a general indication of the suitability of the holiday for someone with reduced mobility. However, reduced mobility of course means different things to different individuals as we fully appreciate that individual capabilities, restrictions and requirements will vary considerably. If you suffer from reduced mobility or any medical condition or disability which may affect your holiday, please give us full details before booking so that we can provide you with precise information as to the suitability of the holiday taking into account your specific needs. Guests who have significant mobility impairments should travel with someone who will take responsibility for any assistance needed during the cruise and in the event of an emergency. Any assistance provided by Norwegian Cruise Line, its team members or service providers does not form part of the contracted services unless agreed differently in writing or where required by legal regulations (for example, in accordance with EU regulation 1107/2006 dated 5 July 2006 on the rights of disabled persons and persons with reduced mobility when travelling by air and EU regulation 1177/2010 dated 24 November 2010 concerning the rights of passengers when travelling by sea). Any special requirements which we have accepted will be specifically confirmed as accepted on your confirmation invoice. Unless and until specifically confirmed as accepted, all special requests and requirements are subject to availability and do not form part of the contracted services.

We have a limited number of staterooms per ship that are wheelchair accessible with grab rails in the bathrooms, lower sinks and toilets, shower seats, raised beds, adjustable hanging rods in wardrobes, tilting mirrors and extra wide doors for easy access.

If you do use a wheelchair, you must bring your own and it must be collapsible. If you do not wish to bring your own wheelchair on board, please contact our U.S.-based supplier Scooteround on 001 (888) 441 7575 to arrange delivery of one to the ship. All wheelchairs and scooters must be stored in your stateroom; they cannot be left in the hallway or any other public area. To ensure the safety of our guests and crew, wheelchairs may not be used to transfer from the ship to a tender. Guests in wheelchairs may consequently not be able to participate in certain activities or shore excursions in tender ports. Norwegian Cruise Line can only accept certain types of wheelchairs on board. Please see www.ncl.eu/about/accessible-cruising for further information. All guests who require medical equipment to be brought on board must advise Norwegian Cruise Line before sailing. Failure to do so may result in equipment not being cleared before departure.

For hearing-/ vision-impaired guests, we have a limited number of staterooms with vibrating alarm clocks and a flashing light system alerting guests to fire alarms. For the vision-impaired, we allow registered guide dogs on all Norwegian Cruise Line ships (airline and international quarantine restrictions may apply and should be checked before booking your cruise).

Guests who need oxygen or require oxygen therapy are welcome on all Norwegian Cruise Line ships; however, you must supply your own oxygen. U.S.-based Special Needs at Sea is the only company allowed to deliver and supply oxygen to Norwegian Cruise Line ships. Let us know at the time of booking that you'll be bringing oxygen on board, then contact Special Needs at Sea at 001 954 585 0575 to arrange delivery to the ship.

Any physical challenge or medical condition that requires special treatment or attention must be reported to Norwegian Cruise Line at the time of booking. For certain conditions we ask for medical declaration and liability forms. Due to unpredictable circumstances at sea, Norwegian Cruise Line must reserve the right to refuse or revoke passage to anyone who, based upon objective standards, is in a physical or mental condition that jeopardises the safe operation of the vessel, who poses a direct threat to the health or safety of others or who may require care beyond that which Norwegian Cruise Line can provide.

For guests with diabetes, refrigerators suitable for storing insulin are available in all staterooms except Studios (category T1 and T8).

If you are on a low calorie diet, breakfast, lunch and dinner menus feature low calorie, haute cuisine dishes. Sugar-free and fat-free desserts are also available. Gluten-free, lactose-free, sodium-free, Kosher and dairy-free diets can also be catered for and must be requested at least two months before your cruise. For further information see www.ncl.eu .

Guests are not allowed to bring on board any intoxicating liquors/beverages, travel irons, firearms, weapons of any kind, ammunition, explosive substances or any goods of a dangerous nature, nor animals of any kind, except service or guide animals, provided the guest notifies Norwegian Cruise Line prior to the cruise of his intention to bring such an animal and agrees to take sole responsibility for any expense, damage, injuries or losses associated with or caused by such an animal.

Each guest is allowed up to two pieces of checked luggage, with a 22 kg maximum each. If travelling by air, remember that airlines do have their own checked baggage and hand luggage restrictions, so please check these. Airlines and Norwegian Cruise Line have limited liability loss, so be sure all baggage and personal belongings are properly insured. Suitcases should be tagged. Medicines in their original containers, jewellery, fragile items, valuables and important documents should be carried in your hand luggage. If you are bringing your wheelchair, check with your airline for any restrictions they may have.

A Guarantee stateroom (GTY) is one where there is no stateroom number assigned at the time of booking. A stateroom may be assigned any time after final payment has been received, up to the day of sailing. A Guarantee stateroom guarantees you a stateroom in the category you have paid for (Inside, Oceanview etc.). It does not guarantee deck, location or specific bed arrangements. Once the stateroom has been assigned, there will be no changes.

When a passenger takes more than one cruise in consecutive order, it is called a back-to-back cruise. The cruises can be on the same ship or different ships. There can be no more than a one-day lapse between cruises to be considered a back-to-back cruise. Depending on the port and customs regulations, guests may be required to disembark and reembark between sailings, and may be required to complete a Customs Declaration Form after each cruise. If the guests disembark whilst customs is inspecting the ship, the guests will need to wait until customs has finished before they can re-embark. Some entertainment options and dining room menus may be duplicated during the second cruise.

When deciding on your travel date, you should take into account any circumstances or events that may have an influence on your cruise experience, for example school holidays, spring break, local public holidays, special sports events etc.

All guests must provide key personal information prior to boarding the cruise ship. Travel to some destinations require passports and/or special visas and travel authorizations.

Identification requirements for domestic airline travel will change for US Citizens in 2018. Please read this important information on our Required Travel Documentation page.

Caribbean, Bahamas, Bermuda, Alaska, Mexican Riviera, Or Canada & New England Cruises

For round-trip sailings (cruises that depart from and return to the same U.S. port) , you may sail with either a valid passport, proof of citizenship and a valid government-issued photo I.D. (driver’s license with a photo), or any other WHTI compliant document.

Proof of Citizenship examples include:

  • State certified U.S. birth certificate
  • Original certificate of U.S. naturalization
  • Original certificate of U.S. citizenship
  • U.S. Consular report of your birth abroad.
  • Baptismal paper, hospital certificates of birth and Puerto Rico birth certificates issued prior to 7/1/10 are not acceptable.
  • A U.S. citizen under the age of 16 do not require a government-issued photo ID.

For open-jaw sailings (cruises that depart from one U.S. port and return to a different U.S. port) , you are required to carry:

  • A valid passport
  • U.S. passport card
  • U.S. or Canadian Enhanced Drivers License
  • Permanent residents of the U.S. are required to carry their valid ARC cards for boarding AND passport from their country of citizenship, if available.

Note: If you miss your ship at its scheduled U.S. departure port and need to travel outside the U.S. to meet your ship, or should you unexpectedly need to depart the ship from a foreign port prior to the end of sailing, a passport would be required to leave or re-enter the U.S. by air. To that end, Norwegian strongly recommends all guests to obtain a passport for their voyage on any Norwegian vessel.

All Itineraries

All guests must carry a valid passport, and if necessary, a multiple entry visa is required for entry into the United States (i.e. B-2 Visitors Visa), or a visa waiver. Please be sure to check with the proper agencies and authorities (such as your local immigration office) before you sail because we can't board you without the proper documents. Travelers from the 36 Visa Waiver Program (VWP) countries must have a machine-readable passport to enter the U.S. without a visa.  All VWP travelers are required to obtain an electronic travel authorization prior to boarding a carrier to travel by air or sea to the U.S. under the VWP.

Hawaii Cruises

There’s no need for a passport when you sail on any Hawai‘i inter-island cruise. If your ship never sails beyond the islands of Hawai‘i, all you need is a government-issued photo I.D. which includes a passport or a valid driver’s license with a photo. A U.S. citizen under the age of 16 do not require a government-issued photo ID.

Europe Cruises

A valid passport is required and in some cases, a tourist visa is also required.

Please note that guests who have not filled out their Online Check-In must arrive at the port two (2) hours prior to sailing.

Joining or debarking the ship at any time outside of the published embark/debark port is not permitted for the following reasons:

  • Itineraries are subject to change without notice.
  • Violation of the Passenger Vessel Act (Jones Act), if applicable.

Approval to embark or disembark mid-cruise may be allowed only in cases of emergencies. Please note that embarking or disembarking mid-cruise may result in a violation of the Passenger Vessel Act (Jones Act), resulting in a fine starting at $798 per person.

Boarding Time in Ports of Call: In all ports of call, it is also the guest's responsibility to be back onboard the ship no later than one (1) hour prior to the ship's scheduled departure time. Please be aware that shipboard time may differ from the port of call and it is the guest's responsibility to follow the shipboard time. Absolutely. However, for FCCs associated with these affected cruises, the FCC must be first generated and attached to the guest profile. Once the FCC is added to the guest profile, FCCs can then be applied to any existing booking or newly created booking.

Whilst we understand this change may cause some out of pocket and unexpected expenses for affected guests, they will not be reimbursed for those costs. We recommend that guests who purchased travel protection or independent travel insurance submit a claim through their carrier.

No, guests will receive the full value of their winning bid within the FCC and can apply that towards the sailing and category of their choice. Guests can then participate in a new bid once invited to bid for the newly selected sailing.

The original FCC amount will be returned to the guests' profile. If an affected booking has a previously applied FCC (as a result of a previous suspended sailing), the enhanced value future cruise credit will not be applicable. Bookings under this circumstance are not eligible for a cash refund and will receive the original value of the FCC back to the guests' profile.

Note FCCs have no cash value and cannot be redeemed for cash. If a guest opts to retain the FCC provided, the guest hereby agrees to all of NCL’s terms and conditions associated with the FCC, which can also be found on www.ncl.com/cruise-faq .

To offer our guests even more flexibility for future holiday planning, some under some circumstances who hold outstanding Future Cruise Credits (FCC) may submit a request to convert their FCC to a monetary refund. Guests who elect to request their FCC to a monetary refund will receive the original cruise fare paid, back to their original form of payment and forfeit any bonus FCCs attached to their Latitudes profile. Any guest wishing to request a monetary refund (of their original cruise fare paid and in lieu of their active FCC, including bonus amounts) must submit a refund request via the Guest Relations Case Submission page at: https://www.ncl.com/case-submission .

CruiseNext deposits applied to a reservation cancelled under our Peace of Mind policy will not be reissued. The value will be included in the POM-NRD credit that was issued.

CruiseNext deposits applied to a suspended reservation will be returned to the guests profile.

The following will not be applied to the FCC or refunded:

  • Special Promotional Onboard Credits (OBC)

At time of cancellation, all promotional offers, amenities, and value adds will be removed from the booking and will not carry-over to future reservations. Future reservations are subject to prevailing fares and offers in market at the time of booking.

If the cruise fare for the new booking exceeds the FCC's value, guests will be responsible for the difference. Alternatively, if the new cruise fare is lower than the FCC's value, the remaining balance will be returned to your FCC.

Whilst You Cruise

The Cruise Norwegian mobile app is not intended for children under the age of 13. However, permission by a parent or guardian in the same stateroom can be granted through their mobile app. To grant permission, a parent must log into the app with their information, open the main menu and navigate to the Preference Centre, select the CHILD ACCESS menu option, and follow the instructions.

All Norwegian Cruise Line ships are fully stabilised for the smoothest possible cruising and we plan our itineraries to sail in regions at the times of year when the seas are at their calmest.

Usually, the ships sail at night and due to the operation of the engines some staterooms - especially those on lower decks - may be slightly noisier than others. The same applies to staterooms close to nightclubs, lifts or staircases, kitchen galleys, fitness centre, kids and teens facilities and when tender boats are in operation.

On certain ships our Norwegian iConcierge app keeps you informed about everything going on, lets you make reservations for shore excursions or restaurants and more.

Please visit our website ( www.ncl.eu ) to browse all the exciting choices available in every port of call. Once you’ve chosen the excursions you can book them online up to two days before sailing. Our shore excursions team is happy to assist you – see backcover for applicable telephone numbers. Alternatively, buy them on board at the ship’s Shore Excursion Desk. On some of our European itineraries and on specific sailing dates, we also offer – besides shore excursions in English – shore excursions in Spanish and German, and selected shore excursions with French and Italian speaking guides (subject to a minimum number of 30 participants).

There are casinos with table games and slot machines on board all our ships (except Pride of America due to regional law). Guests must be 18 or over to gamble and claim any winnings.

Services are available to store your luggage at the following ports.

Please note that Hawaii, Miami, Boston and New York have no luggage storage available.

As the health and well-being of our guests and crew is of the utmost importance, Norwegian Cruise Line will institute changes to its smoking policy for all sailings on or after November 1, 2014 . The specific changes prohibit smoking on stateroom balconies and limit smoking in the casino to players. On Norwegian Breakaway, smoking on The Waterfront will be permitted on the starboard side, except by the outdoor dining areas. (Smoking on The Waterfront is no longer permitted on Norwegian Getaway.)

Guests in the Garden Villas may smoke in their private garden and on their private sun decks.

Public areas throughout all our ships are smoke-free. If you smoke regular or electronic cigarettes, you can do so in designated areas only. If you prefer pipes or cigars, you can smoke in the Cigar Bar or designated smoking lounge. Smoking cigarettes, electronic cigarettes, cigars and pipes is permitted in outdoor public guest spaces and open decks where designated by the ship's management based on the ship's specific characteristics and arrangement. Smoking, including electronic cigarettes, is prohibited in or near venues serving food, the jogging track, outdoor sporting venues, The Haven outdoor areas and children's pool areas. On ships with The Waterfront, with the exception of Norwegian Joy, smoking is permitted on the starboard side excluding any food service areas. Active Casino players may smoke cigarettes in the Casino during gaming hours. Cigarette smoking is not permitted in any other indoor venue or location.

Guests are not permitted to smoke cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars or pipes in their staterooms or on their balconies. Cigar and pipe smoking in staterooms and on balconies is prohibited. Smoking inside your stateroom or on your balcony will result in a $250 USD cleaning charge added to your onboard account. If cigarette burns on furniture, linens, towels or carpeting are detected; guests will be advised and charged for the damages.

Electronic cigarettes cannot be used in public areas where there is a No Smoking policy in force; simply because these cigarettes look so realistic and therefore other guests' perception is that we are not enforcing the No Smoking rule.

As the health and well-being of our guests and crew is of the utmost importance, indoor public areas, with the exception of the cigar lounges and the casino, throughout all our ships are smoke-free. Dedicated outdoor areas are assigned to smoking.

Indoor Areas

This policy is in place for the safety of your child. Pagers and handy phones do not work ashore from the ship.

Handy phones or pagers will be given out for the following reasons:

If a handy phone or pager is issued a fee of $150.00 will be applied to your onboard account if the device is not returned or if it is returned broken.

Most drop offs will take place in the Splash Academy; however due to high counts the 10 - 12 year old programme may be in a different location. This is not meant to cause inconvenience as it allows us to take in more children.

  • Step 4: Dismissal - Once the child is allowed back into the programme after the initial dismissal, if any disobedient behavior continues, the child will no longer be allowed to participate. More severe behaviours may warrant a higher discipline as deemed appropriate by the Youth Programme Supervisor.

Entourage combines the hang out zone, dance zone, game zone and party zone. The Teen Counsellors plan intriguing activities and challenges to keep the teens coming back for more. Activities and games may take place around the ship. Parents should know that the activities are hosted by the Teen Counsellors. However, when activities take place around the ship, Entourage may be unsupervised.

For overall safety, children should pack and be expected to wear to closed toe sneakers when participating in activities at the Sports Court.
