When I first moved to Denver, I came on a whim – my only experience of the city was a brief weekend during a cross-country road trip. But after bouncing from coast to coast and across the southern border for years, I figured Denver would be a good place for a short-term stint.

Almost 15 years later, I’m still here and I have no plans to move. What I’ve found in Denver is an unexpected urban gem: a fast-growing city of locals and newcomers, revitalized neighborhoods and a rich cultural landscape.

The sunny days and outdoorsy ethos are an integral part of life here – people walk and cycle around the city, and green spaces dot the landscape. And, oh those mountains overlooking it all! Here's what I think it's most important for you to know about Denver before your visit.

1. Plan on a long weekend

Colorado’s biggest city buzzes with activity – it has a good mix of museums, theaters and sports arenas plus a hopping restaurant and nightlife scene. Choose a couple of things to do each day, including time to wander, and a long weekend should be plenty of time to get a sense of the city; it'll also leave you wanting to come back for more.

2. Pack layers

Though Denver’s weather is relatively mild year-round, it can change on a dime…snow melts quickly and summer evenings can become downright chilly. Bring layers, including a fleece and a warm hat, to stay comfortable. A pair of closed-toe shoes is a good idea too.

3. Experience the city on foot, bike and bus

Denver’s traffic can be onerous and parking can be expensive, especially downtown. Skip the rental car and navigate the city by foot, bike or public transportation . Most of the city’s sights are within a few miles of each other, which makes riding a bike or taking the bus easy.

They’re affordable too – day passes on Denver’s RTD bus lines are just $6 per day (free for kids under five) and Lime bikes cost a dollar to unlock and then run at $0.15 per minute.

4. Expect extra restaurant fees

Since Covid hit, Denver restaurants have increasingly added a pre-tax "cost-of-living fee" to diners’ bills to supplement staff wages. Often, it’s directed to non-tipped kitchen staff but sometimes it’s split amongst everyone. So should you still tip? In general, if the fee is 12% or less, a gratuity is still expected and very much appreciated.

5. Book (most) sporting event tickets in advance

Denverites take their big sports seriously with five professional teams calling it home. Tickets aren’t cheap and can sell out quickly, especially to the Broncos , Nuggets and Avalanche so be sure to buy those as soon as you know you’re headed to town. If you'd rather play it by ear, you can typically score decent same-day seats to a Rockies or Rapids game.

6. Ditto for big hit shows

Big ticket shows come to the impressive Red Rocks Amphitheater and Denver Performing Arts Complex (DPAC) every year and seats go fast. Peruse their websites before you arrive – if there’s a show you don’t want to miss, snag tickets early.

Otherwise, you can sometimes find last-minute tickets, especially for weeknight performances. If you don’t mind a gamble, try for rush seats at DPAC – tickets sold directly from the box office on performance day at a significant discount.

7. Budget extra time at the airport

One of the biggest and busiest airports in the world, Denver International Airport (DIA) takes a little extra time to navigate. A multi-year, billion-dollar upgrade to its main terminal, though, means navigating construction in the ticketing and security checkpoint areas. Allow for more time than your local airport, especially on the outbound flight, until it’s completed in 2028.

8. No need to dress up, even when you’re out on the town

Casual dress rules in Denver – a T-shirt, jeans and puffy jacket are the unofficial uniform. If you want to dress things up, wear a button down shirt and your nicest sneakers. No pressure though!

9. Drink the local brew

With over 150 craft breweries in the Denver metro area, local beer is pretty much the go-to drink, often sipped and savored like wine. So, if you enjoy beer, join the craft crowd. And if you must drink a mass-produced brew, make it a Coors. It’ll sting locals a little less.

10. Enjoy happy hour eats

Denverites take happy hour eats seriously and many high-end restaurants comply by offering incredible deals on small plates, an affordable way to eat gourmet. Go early to get a table – typically around 4pm Monday to Thursday.

11. Tread lightly when talking about politics

Coloradans value courtesy but can have strong, vocal opinions if pushed, especially on their home turf. Sure, Denver is one of the state’s liberal hubs, but opinions can run the gamut in this purple state. Be respectful and don’t assume people share your opinion.

12. Yes, you can smoke weed...but there are rules

The skunky-sweet smell of weed has become commonplace in Denver since recreational marijuana was legalized in 2012. As long as you’re over 21, it’s easy to partake as long as you follow the rules:

  • Buy from a dispensary – they are the only businesses licensed to sell cannabis products. And with close to 200 in Denver, they’re easy to find. Bring your ID and cash (credit and debit cards aren’t accepted).
  • Smoking marijuana in public is illegal, including parks, sidewalks and concert halls. Instead, partake in private or in places like a 420-friendly hotel or marijuana social club.
  • You can only use weed in specially designated vehicles, like those on cannabis tours. It’s illegal to smoke it or have an open container of it in your car – think of it as alcohol and keep the container shut until you get where you’re going
  • Don’t drive if you’re high. You could really hurt someone and face a DUI charge too. Take an Uber or taxi instead. For a deeper dive on everything cannabis, check out the Colorado Pot Guide .

13. Acclimate to the elevation

Sitting 5280 feet above sea level, it’s common for visitors to the Mile High City to experience altitude sickness. Symptoms are typically mild but can include light-headedness, slight headaches and fatigue.

Take it easy the first couple days to give yourself time to acclimatize to the elevation; staying hydrated helps too. If you experience severe nausea, dizziness and continued headaches, consult a doctor and/or get to a lower altitude.

14. The sun is no joke

Denver is one of the sunniest cities in the county, enjoying about 300 days of sunshine each year. Add to that the high elevation (which enhances the sun’s intensity) and you’ve got a recipe for a nasty sunburn. Cover up, slather on sunscreen, and consider wearing a billed hat.

If you’ll be exercising or walking a lot, copy the locals and carry a refillable water bottle. You’ll save cash (not to mention the environment) and stay hydrated.

15. In summer, beware of the hail

Colorado’s Front Range lies in the heart of "Hail Alley," where the nation’s highest number of hailstorms occur. Take cover if one hits! In 2017, a storm of baseball-sized hail hit metro Denver, causing a record-breaking $2 billion in damages in just minutes (including totaling my beloved blue Subaru!).

16. Tent cities are a thing

Tent cities or collections of makeshift shelters are a common sight in and around downtown Denver, and are a reflection of the city’s ongoing homelessness crisis. While these unhoused communities don’t necessarily pose a safety problem to passersby, the people living there are particularly vulnerable to issues like drug abuse and mental health crises.

Insider Tips for Visiting Denver, Colorado

  • November 18, 2019
  • By foxintheforest

Last Updated on November 5, 2021 by foxintheforest

I’ve lived in the Mile High City for over 12 years. Over the years, I’ve given tons of advice on visiting Denver. As a long-time local I’ve welcomed guests from around the world and have plenty of Denver travel tips.

Denver is an amazing city for a weekend getaway or as a home base for exploring the best of Colorado. These locally-designed tips for visiting Denver, Colorado are designed to help you make the most out of your trip. So here’s an inside look at what to know before you travel to Denver.

How to Use this Locally-Curated Guide to Visiting Denver, Colorado

There’s a lot of things to know before planning a trip to Denver, Colorado. As a local, I’ve got the inside scoop on how to navigate the Mile High City and make the most of your Denver vacation. Here’s a look at what we’ll cover in this article:

  • Practical information about visiting Denver, Colorado
  • How to get around Denver
  • Where to stay in Denver
  • Where to eat in Denver
  • Local insider tips to visiting Denver

Arriving in Denver, Colorado

First, the Denver International Airport isn’t exactly close to downtown. In fact, as your plane touches down at DIA you might think you’ve accidentally landed in Kansas.

The Denver airport is around 40 minutes by car and an hour by public transportation from downtown. This is important to keep in mind as you plan your trip.

The cheapest way to get to and from the Denver International Airport is via the train. For $15 you can take the A Line all the way to Union Station, at the heart of downtown Denver. An Uber or Lyft ride from the airport will run you about $80 one-way. YIKES!

If you have a long layover in Denver, you’ll need at least 7 hours in order to have enough time to hop into the city and actually spend some time there. Otherwise, wander just outside the airport to the Westin for a few nicer dining options. In the winter, there’s a free ice rink for use.

denver tips

Public Transportation in Denver

Unlike super-dense cities like New York City, Denver lacks a suitable public transportation system. In fact, it’s typically faster to walk, ride share or bike around the city. There is a City Bike program where you can easily rent bikes for a small fee and hop from bike stop to bike stop around the city in order to save some cash.

However, if you’re looking to get out of the city and go on an awesome day trip near Denver, there are a few sweet public transportation options for you.

  • Bustang travels to Boulder in around an hour depending on traffic
  • The G Line on the RTD train goes to Golden
  • You can hop a ride with the Colorado Mountain Express to get anywhere in the mountains via private transport.
  • The Front Range Ski Bus runs Wednesdays through Sundays during ski season to Loveland Ski Area and back.

Should I Rent a Car in Denver?

Determining if you need a car while visiting Denver really depends on what you plan to do. If you’re just in the city for a weekend and you don’t plan on exploring the mountains, you’ll be fine utilizing Uber/Lyft, public transport, rentable scooters, and bikes.

However, things get a bit more complicated if you desire to go into the mountains. There are a few outdoor recreation areas you can visit without a vehicle (mostly in Boulder). But if you want to explore the best scenic drives around Denver, or you plan on doing day trips from Denver, you’ll be better off renting a vehicle.

In the summertime, you can get away with a two-wheeled drive vehicle. However, in the winter you are required by law to carry chains if you plan on driving up I-70 in a two-wheeled vehicle. The fine is fairly hefty (minimum of $500) so either rent an all-wheel-drive vehicle or ask to be provided with tire chains.

What’s the Weather Like in Denver?

There’s a saying in Denver if you don’t like the weather, wait 15 minutes. Denver boasts some wild weather, so always be prepared for an unexpected storm or a 40-degree temperature drop. These are almost annual occurrences here in the Mile High City.

One of my favorite Denver travel tips is understanding the weather. Denver is located on a high desert, one mile above sea level. This means that the weather is generally dry and sunny. Wind isn’t uncommon, especially in the spring and fall. Temperatures are generally mild year-round.

Winters tend to be mild with plenty of sun and the occasional snowfall. Temperatures range from 60 degrees all the way to negative 10. Spring is rather unpredictable and snowy, but the flowers are in full bloom.

Summers are hot with temperatures regularly in the 80s and 90s. The monsoon, or afternoon thunderstorm cycles, happen in July. Fall is beautiful with temperatures in the 80s to the 60s. Peak color changing in Denver is during October, however, this is also when the snow starts to fall.

How Long Should I Visit Denver, Colorado?

Denver is the perfect spot for a quick weekend getaway. In just three days, you can see a majority of the city and even make a quick getaway into the mountains.

For longer trips to Colorado, Denver makes a great home base. You’ll still only need to spend just a few days in Denver before heading out to other parts of the state.

When is the Best Time of Year to Visit Denver?

Honestly, you can visit Denver year-round. The city is bustling with activity and each distinct season has something different to offer. Summer is typically the busy season for Denver, but spring, winter, and fall are all excellent times to visit Denver, Colorado.

Denver is outdoor-focused, even in winter, so don’t expect the cold to keep people inside. You can still explore the outdoors near Denver any time of year.

What to Budget in Denver, Colorado

Denver isn’t exactly a cheap city, but it’s certainly less expensive than New York, San Francisco or Los Angeles. Here’s what to budget per day in Denver:

  • Basic hotel room: $120 per night
  • Hostel Dorm: $20 – $30 per night *expect American hostel quality, not the best choice for solo female travelers
  • Transportation: $20 – $30 per day if you are taking a mix of rideshare, public transport and bikes or scooters
  • Airport transfer: $15 one way for the train
  • Beer at a bar: $6 to $12 depending on how boutique the establishment is
  • Cheap Eats: $12 per person
  • Dinner for two: $45 – $100
  • Coffee: $3 -$5

Budget-Friendly Tips for Visiting Denver, Colorado

If you’re visiting Denver on a budget, here are a few quick Denver travel tips:

  • Stay in a private room AirBnB to save money on lodging
  • Get a City Pass if you plan on exploring the sites in the city
  • Denver has some great Happy Hours, take advantage to save money on drinks.
  • Going to a sporting event? Check out deal nights for the local teams before you snag tickets.
  • Cook your meals at home. Eating out is expensive.
  • Plan on skiing near Denver? Snag your lift tickets online in advance for a little discount.

Where to Stay in Denver

There are a wide variety of places to stay in Denver. If you’re interested in exploring the city, look into the RiNo neighborhood, the Highlands Neighborhood, Lodo or Capitol Hill.

Local Denver Travel Tips

These local tips for visiting Denver aim to help you make the most of your trip. After all, there’s no better way to travel than like a local!

Acclimatize to the altitude.

Many people don’t think about the fact that they are 5,280 feet above the sea level when they visit Denver. You may feel winded, tired, thirsty, and even develop a headache. It’s important to properly acclimatize when you visit Denver.

For your first day or so, take it slow and drink plenty of water (don’t forget to pack a reusable water bottle). Avoid caffeine, marijuana, and alcohol for the first 24 hours.

Follow Recreational Marijuana Laws

So weed is certainly legal here in Denver. Rember you’ll need a valid ID that proves you’re over 21 and cash to purchase pot in Denver. As a visitor, you’re welcome to smoke or ingest marijuana products, but keep the following in mind:

  • It is still ILLEGAL to ingest weed and drive.
  • It is also ILLEGAL to ingest or smoke weed in public – this includes nature. The fine for getting caught is up to 15 days in jail.
  • Not all hotels are weed-friendly. Ask first.
  • Keep it concealed. Weed needs to stay in its container when not in use
  • You can buy up to one ounce of weed as a visitor. That is an epic ton of weed. The stuff is strong here, you won’t need much.
  • Don’t try to smuggle it out of state. There are regularly drug dogs at the airport.
  • Enjoy responsibly. Edibles tend to give people trouble. Take a small dose, wait two hours before dosing again.

Get Out of Denver and See the Mountains

Denver is deceivingly far from those scenic Rocky Mountain vistas. Fortunately, there’s plenty of incredible hiking trails less than 2 hours from Denver . So strap on your hiking boots and bask in the mountain glory!

Chow Down on Local Eats

Denver is a foodie paradise. Thanks to its pro-small business policies there’s tons of innovation here. And that comes with plenty of delicious food. The best eateries in Denver are often locally owned and some have even become local coveted chains. Here are a few Denver-specific foods to try:

  • Rocky Mountain Oysters or bull testicles. A total classic you can get at the Buckhorn Exchange, Denver’s oldest restaurant.
  • The breakfast burrito. As a coveted Denver tradition, many locals argue about the best place to mow down on some breakfast goodness. My favorite spot is Devil’s Food.
  • A classic burger. Build your own with all the weird ingredients at The Cherry Cricket.

Support Local Businesses

Local businesses reign supreme here in Denver. One local Denver travel tip is to check out the variety of local, boutique shops. Take a stroll down Tennyson in the Highlands, Cherry Creek North or Old South Pearl in Platt Park for the best boutique shopping in Denver.

Enjoy the Street Art Scene

One of my favorite parts about living in Denver is the incredible street art scene. No trip to Denver is complete without a walk through the RiNo district where you can catch the latest and greatest street art in the city. Oh, and it’s total Instagram candy so bring a camera.

denver tips

Grab a Local Brew

When I first moved to Denver, there were only a handful of breweries, but today there’s virtually a brewery on every block. It’s hard to throw a rock and not hit one of the best breweries in Denver. The Great Divide and Wynkoop are classic establishments, while the Crooked Stave and Cerveceria Colorado offer up a fresh new spin on what a brewery can be.

Safety in Denver

Staying safe throughout your trip is extremely important. In general, Denver is a fairly safe city. However, with that being said you should always be cautious and have your wits about you, especially if you’re walking alone downtown at night.

The 16th Street Mall, once a popular tourist attraction, has become a hotbed for petty crime. I wouldn’t recommend traveling around here at night. Take care in the areas north of the RiNo Neighborhood as well as Park Avenue near the homeless shelters.

Denver is an awesome spot to visit and a great home base for exploring Colorado. These tips for visiting Denver are designed to give you the insider knowledge to travel to Denver like a local.

Larimer Square Larimer Square free

In 1858, a group of settlers struck gold at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. Their discovery soon spread back to the East Coast, prompting people to pick up and move west. The site of the original pioneer camp (known back then as Auraria) soon grew into the charming area now known as Larimer Square. Although the city has since expanded, this historic neighborhood remains the heart and soul of the Mile High City, and according to some, it's the place to start your Denver experience thanks to its variety of restaurants, bars and shops. It's also a featured stop on many of the best Denver tours .

Before venturing to Larimer Square, you may want to pay a visit to the Larimer Square  website . Here, you'll find a listing of all the local businesses and upcoming events, not to mention maps that can help orient where specific dining, shopping and entertainment options are.

Empower Field at Mile High Empower Field at Mile High

Football fans won't want to pass up the chance to spend some time on the Denver Broncos' home turf. Empower Field at Mile High can hold more than 76,000 NFL fans and is notable for its elevation, which sits at 5,280 feet above sea level. That, combined with the view of the Rocky Mountains to the west and the Denver skyline to the east, makes it a unique venue to visit.

If you can swing it, try to catch a home game. Ticket prices vary by game and availability, and you'll want to purchase your seats well in advance to ensure availability. If you can't make it to a game, you can tag along on a guided tour of the stadium. Led by employees from the on-site Colorado Sports Hall of Fame Museum (one of the stops on the tour), these 75- to 90-minute tours take participants to the visiting teams' locker rooms, the end zone as well as into the network television production compound and the TV and radio broadcast facilities. Recent visitors described the tour experience as incredible thanks to the knowledgeable guides.

United States Mint United States Mint free

Even if you hate the sound of excess change rattling around your pockets, you'll find a tour of the Denver branch of the United States Mint to be an interesting way to spend an hour or so. Having opened in 1863, its purpose was to transform the Gold Rush's findings into coinage. Today, the U.S. Mint in Denver can produce up to 50 million coins a day.

A free guided tour of the U.S. Mint in Denver will allow you the opportunity to learn more about each stage of coin production, from the design and sculpting of each piece to the cutting of each type of coin. Some recent visitors marveled at the coin-making machines, but say that not all travelers will likely find it enthralling.

Go Hiking (Or Biking) in The Rocky Mountains

Rocky Mountains

It’s only an hour and a half to Estes Park, the gateway to the Rockies – from where you can hop off to do cool hikes and trails including Bear Lake and the Glacier Gorge Trail.

Even better? Take a road trip around Colorado , kicking off in Denver and then making your way to the Rockies and a Dude Ranch like I did.

My favourite drinks spot is Curio, who serve up some banging cocktails and a decent selection of wines and craft beers.

Denver’s first beer spa recently opened up in the RiNo district. The spa offers a variety of different beer-themed treatments, such as a hop and malt wrap, a barley scrub, and even a beer bath!

Now, if the idea of a beer spa has you thinking about some low-quality boorish hangout that’s more pub than spa, you should think again. The spa is inspired by  a traditional Czech spa but given a Japanese aesthetic – think lots of clean lines and light and you’ll be on the right track.

Take an E-Tuk Tour of the City

Denver is a great city to explore on foot, but if you want to see a little bit more of the city, consider taking an E-Tuk tour.

E-Tuks are three-wheeled vehicles that can accommodate up to six passengers. They are perfect for getting around the city and offer a fun and unique way to see Denver – particularly when headed up by some of the funniest tour guides in town. I highly recommend them.

The Clyfford Still Museum is a must-visit for art lovers.

The museum is home to the world’s largest collection of works by Clyfford Still, an American painter who was a pioneer of the Abstract Expressionist movement.

VISIT DENVER Announces the 2024 Denver & Colorado Tourism Hall of Fame Inductees

DENVER (January 22, 2024) – Denver’s multibillion dollar tourism industry will honor some of its top leaders and innovators at the 24th Annual Denver & Colorado Tourism Hall of Fame dinner on Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at the Colorado Convention Center, Bluebird Ballroom.

The 2024 inductees to the Denver & Colorado Tourism Hall of Fame are: Frank Day , the founder of Concept Restaurants, who in a career spanning five decades operated more than 80 hospitality businesses, including the Hotel Boulderado, Denver’s Stout Street Social, Rock Bottom Brewery and Old Chicago Pizza; Bill Mosher , who is CEO of the Denver Convention Center Hotel Authority, the non-profit corporation that financed, designed, constructed, furnished and owns the 1100-room Hyatt Regency at the Colorado Convention Center and who recently retired from his role at Trammell Crow Company as Colorado Market Leader; and Wilma Webb , who as First Lady to her husband, former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb, and as a state representative for 13 years brought a new level of appreciation for the arts to Denver.

A special posthumous award will also be presented in the memory of Steve Sander , who worked closely with four Denver mayors and as a decades-long member of the VISIT DENVER Board, left a legacy shaping the Mile High City’s image through marketing for some of Colorado’s most visible brands including Cherry Creek Shopping Center, The Denver Post, Denver Botanic Gardens, Water World, the Denver Nuggets, The University of Colorado, and Denver B-Cycle, while also playing a pivotal role in bringing sporting events to Denver including the SIA Sports Show, the Big Air Show, Colfax Marathon and USA Pro Cycling.

The Denver & Colorado Tourism Hall of Fame serves as the highest award for Denver’s travel industry which entertained a record 36.3 million total visitors and generated $9.4 billion in spending in 2022 (the latest year for figures), while supporting more than 60,000 jobs, making it one of the largest employers in the metro area.

“The Tourism Hall of Fame winners for 2024 highlight the considerable size and complexity of Denver’s travel industry, with individuals who have been instrumental in developing restaurants, hotels, sporting events, retail and the arts at the foundation,” said Richard Scharf , President & CEO of VISIT DENVER. “Our inductees in 2024 have not only helped support jobs and bring in more funding, but they have also worked to make Denver a better and more vibrant city.”

In addition to the Hall of Fame Inductees, VISIT DENVER will recognize five “Tourism Stars” – organizations that went above and beyond to create an especially impactful visitor experience in 2023.

British Airways , which on Sept. 1, 2023, celebrated 25 years of providing year-round, nonstop transatlantic service between London and Denver International Airport. Since its inaugural flight to Denver in 1998, British Airways has operated more than 17,000 flights to and from London, seamlessly connecting the Mile High City to its global network. Nearly 4 million customers have experienced the elevated service British Airways offers to and from Denver International Airport, and the UK’s national flag carrier has operated more international flights over a longer time period than any other carrier at DEN.

Colorado Tourism Office – Michelin Guide to Colorado . In 2023, the Colorado Tourism Office partnered with Michelin, an organization that originated in France and has become highly respected for producing one of the most cherished dining guides on the planet to produce a Colorado guide for the first time, reviewing restaurants in Denver, Boulder, Aspen, Snowmass Village, Vail and Beaver Creek Resort. Michelin recognized 26 Denver restaurants in their inaugural and highly anticipated Colorado-based Guide. The famously anonymous MICHELIN Guide inspectors selected a diverse range of restaurants across the city that exude culinary excellence. Denver joins Boulder, Aspen and Snowmass Village, the Town of Vail and Beaver Creek Resort in the Colorado MICHELIN Guide, the eighth Guide destination in North America. Three Denver restaurants were awarded one Michelin Star; nine restaurants, including five in Denver, were awarded Michelin’s “Bib Gourmand” designation for outstanding food at a great value; and 30 restaurants in Denver received “recommended status.” The Colorado Michelin Guide brings awareness on a global scale to Denver and Colorado while elevating the dining scene in the state.

Denver Art Museum – Desert Rider: Dreaming in Motion, Amoako Boafo: Soul of Black Folks, All Stars: American Artists from The Phillips Collection . Through their innovative exhibitions, the Denver Art Museum continues to bring renowned art to the Mile High City. “All Stars: American Artists from The Phillips Collection,” showcased 140 years of American art by more than 50 artists including Benny Andrews, Jacob Lawrence, Georgia O'Keeffe and Jackson Pollock with works that explored American art from the 19th century, connecting the pieces to important societal issues that remain today. “Amoako Boafo: Soul of Black Folks” presents the first solo exhibition tour for Ghanaian artist Amoako Boafo. Born in 1984 and as one of the most acclaimed artists of his generation, Boafo’s works focuses on the viewers’ gaze with a unique perspective on his subjects’ presence through his portraits representing Black life. “Desert Rider: Dreaming in Motion,” explored lowrider and skateboard culture in Denver and across the American Southwest.

Denver Museum of Nature & Science – Bugs, After the Asteroid: Earth's Comeback Story, Mysteries of the Ice Ages . The Denver Museum of Nature & Science continues to bring special exhibitions to our city that draw visitors from throughout the region and around the nation to explore how the planet is changing. Bugs make up 90% of all animal species on Earth, yet few of us know how essential and powerful these creatures really are. The interactive exhibition, “Bugs” took visitors into the incredible lives of insects, arachnids and myriapods and invited visitors to think and problem-solve like nature’s true heroes. “After the Asteroid: Earth's Comeback Story,” brought visitors to a newly discovered trove of remarkably preserved fossils, found at Corral Bluffs near Colorado Springs, focusing on how Earth recovered after the devastating asteroid impact 66 million years ago that wiped out the dinosaurs. “Mysteries of the Ice Ages” journeyed through Earth’s icy history where visitors were invited to discover Neanderthals, early humans and Arctic peoples who lived in lands lost long ago under the world’s oceans, while meeting animals from woolly mammoths to American lions.

Denver Nuggets – NBA Champions . In June 2023, the Denver Nuggets won the NBA Finals for the first time in their history. The playoffs and victory resulted in an estimated $25 million in direct spending and $100 million in indirect spending for Denver. The final playoff series was broadcast in 214 countries in 60 languages, while the final game was viewed by 17.88 million Americans. The playoffs generated more than 8 billion views on NBA social media platforms – the most postseason views ever – with 540 million social media impressions for Finals MVP Nikola Jokić, the first player in NBA history to average 30+ points, 8+ assists per game and win a championship since Michael Jordan in 1991. The Championship brought fans together in Ball Arena, homes, sports bars and public venues with an estimated 750,000 fans lining the victory parade route through Downtown Denver. The victory generated incalculable worldwide publicity for Denver.

The Denver & Colorado Tourism Hall of Fame dinner is a fundraising event for the VISIT DENVER Foundation, which has awarded more than $1.5 million in scholarships to 535 Colorado students pursuing a career in tourism and hospitality, and $120,000 to the former Denver’s Road Home.

2024 DENVER & COLORADO TOURISM HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES

Frank Day, Founder of Concept Restaurants

From founding the Old Chicago pizzeria chain to revitalizing the Hotel Boulderado, 90-year-old Frank Day has been operating restaurants for more than 50 years—and he isn’t slowing down. Over his five-decade-long career, he has operated more than 80 hospitality businesses—including Denver’s Stout Street Social across from the Colorado Convention Center and Rock Bottom Restaurant & Brewery on the 16th Street Mall. In September 2022 he opened a Boulder brewpub, Boulder Social. Day made his foray into the Colorado food scene in 1972 with the legendary Walrus, a basement restaurant which served University of Colorado Boulder students for 46 years before closing in 2018. He opened his first Old Chicago pizzeria in 1976 and in 1980 took over the Victorian-style Hotel Boulderado. In 1990, he opened the first brewpub in Boulder, followed by the first Rock Bottom in Denver in 1991, and the first ChopHouse & Brewery in 1995, both of which developed into national chains. It is difficult to remember how revolutionary craft breweries were in the early 1990s, and Day helped establish Colorado as the craft brewing center of the nation. In 2019, Day and his wife Gina donated $1 million to Metropolitan State University of Denver’s Hospitality Program, founding the Frank and Gina Day Leadership Academy. From his hotel projects, many restaurants and philanthropy, Day made a significant impact on Denver and Colorado tourism.

Bill Mosher, CEO of the Denver Convention Center Hotel Authority

Bill Mosher has served as CEO of the Denver Convention Center Hotel Authority since its inception in 2002. The non-profit Authority financed, designed, constructed, furnished and owns the 1,100-room Hyatt Regency at the Colorado Convention Center, which opened in December 2005. Mosher currently oversees Hyatt's operations on behalf of the Authority, including overseeing an upcoming major room renovation. Recently, at the end of 2023, Mosher retired from Trammell Crow Company, which he joined in 2006. He oversaw TCC’s development and investment activities in Colorado, including leading the Denver Union Station Project Authority through the development of Denver Union Station, the Denver Water Operations Complex Redevelopment, as well as numerous industrial, office, retail, residential and healthcare related projects across the Front Range. Mosher served as President of the Downtown Denver Partnership (DDP) from 1990-1999, a significant period in Denver’s history which saw the opening of the Colorado Convention Center, Coors Field, Denver International Airport and Elitch Gardens. At DDP, he helped guide Downtown Denver’s rebirth by advocating, planning, managing, promoting and developing central Denver, including forming the Business Improvement District (BID) and initiating a downtown housing development strategy culminating in redevelopment plans for the Central Platte Valley. A native of Denver, Mosher has more than 45 years of experience in both the public and private sectors that have helped transform the city into a major international tourism destination.

Wilma Webb, Former Colorado State Representative

As First Lady of Denver during the tenure of her husband, Denver Mayor Wellington E. Webb from 1991-2003, Wilma Webb brought a new level of appreciation for the arts to Denver. The book she inspired, Denver’s Confluence of the Arts, has been recognized as an important tool in expanding people’s perception of the myriad of resources within Denver’s art world. With her advocacy, additions to Denver’s Art Collection include Borovsky’s The Dancers, and Fernando Botero’s Man and Woman. Webb devoted her life to public service as a Colorado State Representative for thirteen years, fighting for four years for the State of Colorado to adopt the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Her efforts to promote the arts resulted in the creation of the Denver Art, Culture, and Film Foundation in 1994. In 1998, Webb became the first woman to serve in the U.S. Department of Labor as the primary official for Colorado, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Utah and Wyoming. Webb has traveled widely in North America, Europe, Asia and Africa promoting Denver and the arts. Her education includes the University of Colorado Denver and the Harvard University John F. Kennedy School of Government. She has been honored with several national and statewide commendations, including the National Education Association’s Carter G. Woodson Award for Human and Civil Rights, The Arc Legislator of the Year Award and the Colorado Banking Association’s Political Award. A tireless promoter of the arts, Webb was instrumental in establishing Denver as the arts capitol of the Rocky Mountain West and as one of America’s great arts centers.

Steve Sander, Denver Marketing Legend (POSTHUMOUS AWARD)

Steve Sander (known to those who met him as “Sander”) left a legacy in shaping the Mile High City’s image, both around the world and through the thousands of people he touched, befriended and helped. Working closely with four Denver mayors and as a decades-long member of the VISIT DENVER Board, he played a crucial role in the history of Denver tourism and marketing. Current U.S. Senator and former Mayor of Denver John Hickenlooper hired Sander from 2008-2012 to be Denver’s Strategic Marketing Director. “He may not have been an elected official, he may not have been a CEO, but when a lot of big decisions got made, he was in the room when it happened,” said Hickenlooper in remembrance of Sander. “And many times, he was the person who made sure that the other right people were in the room when it happened. Those are qualities that are very rare in any community.”

A list of the Denver projects he worked on would include virtually everything that happened in Denver in the past 30-40 years, helping with the launch the Colorado Rockies, to handling the opening for both the Pepsi Center in 1999 and Invesco Field in 2001. Sander handled the marketing for the MLB All Star Game in 1998, the NHL All-Star game in 2001, the NBA All-Star Game in 2005 and the MLB All Star game again in 2021. He marketed some of Colorado’s most visible brands including Cherry Creek Shopping Center, The Denver Post, Denver Botanic Gardens, Water World, the Denver Nuggets and The University of Colorado. He helped bring bike sharing to Denver, and served on countless boards including VISIT DENVER’s Board of Directors, Friends of Denver Firefighters, Cherry Creek Arts Festival, Cultural Commission, Union Station Bike Hub, Live Well Marketing Advisory Committee and Step Up for Cancer Advisory Board.

Sander helped organize the SIA Snow Show, Big Air, the Colfax Marathon and USA Pro Cycling. He brought to life campaigns for Denver B-Cycle and Hockey Capital USA. He also was instrumental in every single Denver Championship Victory Parade, bringing millions of people to downtown Denver in happiness and celebration.

It is impossible to imagine a sporting event in Denver that did not include Sander, his face glued three inches from his cell phone, his plastic bike lapel pin proudly displayed, and his smiling face as he said his trademark to his thousands of friends and supporters: “Whasssup?”

Denver Nuggets star Jamal Murray throws heat pack on court during game, slammed as 'inexcusable and dangerous'

Jamal Murray of the Denver Nuggets warms up.

Denver Nuggets point guard Jamal Murray threw a heat pack onto the court during his team's playoff loss Monday night, opening himself up to potential discipline for the unsportsmanlike act.

Murray was seated at the far end of Denver's bench when he hurled the object onto the court with about 4:40 left in the second quarter as Timberwolves big man and fellow Kentucky Wildcats alum Karl-Anthony Towns drove for a layup.

Minnesota defeated defending champion Denver, 106-80, to take a commanding 2-0 lead in the West Conference semifinals. Murray left the dressing room before reporters could ask him about the incident.

In addition to Towns, Denver's Reggie Jackson also came close to stepping on the heat pack before Nuggets guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope spotted it and removed it.

“It’s inexcusable and dangerous,” Timberwolves coach Chris Finch said.

Finch didn't see Murray throw it and didn't blame referees for missing it.

“I’m sure it was just a mistake and an oversight” by officials, Finch said. "I’m sure there was nothing intentional by the officiating [missing it] at all. But certainly we can’t allow that to happen.”

Shortly after the heat pack was thrown, the public address announcer warned fans not to toss any objects onto the floor. But Finch, even if he didn't see Murray's throw, knew it couldn't have come from a fan.

“We tried to impress upon them [the officials] that there probably aren't many fans in the building that have a heat pack,” he said. “So it probably had to come from the bench, which they found logical."

Minnesota was pulling away to an early double-digit lead that the Timberwolves wouldn’t relinquish.

"I was the lead official, and I didn’t notice it was on the floor or where it came from until Towns scored," crew chief Marc Davis said .

Had referees seen Murray throw it, he could have been called for a technical foul.

"We weren’t aware it had come from the bench," Davis said. "If we would have been aware it came from the bench, we could have reviewed it under the hostile act trigger. The penalty would have been a technical foul."

Asked after the game whether he feared Murray could face league discipline, Nuggets coach Michael Malone said he didn't even know how the heat pack ended up on the floor.

"I know a heating pack was on the floor, but it was not in my field of vision," he said.

Murray might still have been upset about a non-call earlier in the game when Towns appeared to lower his shoulder and bulldoze through him for a layup. No foul was called.

And while Murray's tantrum could be unprecedented in NBA annals, players’ and coaches’ losing their cool and tossing objects on to the field of play isn't new:

  • Last month, the NHL suspended Minnesota Wild forward Ryan Hartman for three games by the NHL after he thr e w a stick on to the ice in frustration during a game March 30 against the Vegas Golden Knights.
  • The late Indiana basketball coach Bobby Knight was best known for his ill-tempered demeanor and a n incident in 1985 when he hurled a chair across the hardwood .
  • A Southern California high school basketball coach was suspended for six games in January after he threw his shoes onto the floor in anger at the referees. JSerra Catholic High School coach Keith Wilkinson told T he Orange County Register that he unleashed his footwear as a money-saving protest: "I threw my shoes because I figured it won’t cost me as much as a chair."

Although the NBA didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment on any penalties Murray might incur, analysts say a suspension isn’t only possible — but it’s warranted.

“He should be suspended for a game," former NBA point guard Jay Williams said Tuesday on the ESPN morning show “Get Up.”

“That was an inch away from Karl-Anthony Towns planting his right foot right on that thing. That could have hurt him. He could have been out of the game,” Williams said. “I understand it’s not precedented, but I think that was such an immature move by Jamal Murray, and that could have been a really hurtful and nasty thing to happen.”

Williams wasn't alone in his viewpoint.

"I'll be shocked if he's not" suspended, fellow ESPN analyst Tim Legler chimed in. "I don't know how the league wouldn't suspend a player for throwing an object."
