IBM unveils new features to the Masters app and website in time for the 2024 tournament.

Honoring golf’s storied history while appreciating the game in its purest form, the Masters Tournament is like stepping back in time.

Patrons at Augusta National not only observe the greatest golfers in the world playing a pristine course without modern-day distractions like cell phones, which aren’t permitted on the grounds, but also benefit from surprisingly cheap concessions, free parking and other amenities and traditions that elevate golf’s first major into a class of its own.

There’s a reason the Masters Tournament is billed as “a tradition unlike any other.”

Despite being rooted in heritage and tradition, The Masters and Augusta National keep a keen eye on today and tomorrow by working with long-time partner IBM , which has powered The Masters app and masters.com for more than 25 years.

“Whether it’s the on-site patron experience which includes $1.50 sandwiches and free parking, they look for that type of experience on site, but then you bring it over to the digital world and they want to present the most progressive digital experience in the world while maintaining a little bit of mystery and allure around the course,” said Noah Syken, IBM vice president of sports and entertainment partnerships “It’s kind of like two opposing forces.

“There’s always a real emphasis on making the website and digital platform as progressive as possible but doing it in a more measured way that brings in the right perspective and allows them to have the mystery and aura of intrigue around the competition itself.”

Always looking to evolve and iterate its experiences for patrons and viewers, ahead of the 2024 Masters Tournament, IBM unveiled a new feature called Hole Insights, which is a generative AI-powered capability that shares detailed breakdowns of current and historical play at any given course hole at Augusta. The feature provides data-driven recaps of how each hole has played daily and throughout the tournament, projections based on how each hole might play, and historical insights on how each hole has played based on eight years of Masters’ data (more than 170,000 shots).

Not only did IBM introduce Hole Insights, but a year after debuting English AI-generated narration, fans now have the option to experience automated audio and closed caption commentary for on-demand highlight video of the approximately 20,000 shots throughout this year’s tournament in Spanish.

“A natural evolution” to the app and website experience, according to Syken, the Spanish-language feature that’s a combination of generative AI and large language models built on watsonx, also stems from the growth of the Latin America Amateur Championship, which awards the winner an invitation to The Masters.

Syken said IBM won’t stop there with AI narration, potentially expanding to other languages as golf continues to grow and diversify. He also said there could be some variants to the English narration in the future, offering more features, function and color to the experience.

The Masters can be enjoyed on Apple Vision Pro for the first time this year.

Hardly resting on its laurels, or waiting until 2025 to unveil further features, just in time for today’s first round, IBM is debuting the Masters app on Apple Vision Pro .

Including many of the popular features from the traditional Masters app including video livestreams, Track and My Group, the app also includes unique features to the Apple Vision Pro platform such as 3D renderings of the course which allows patrons to view holes from multiple perspectives while witnessing the dramatic elevation changes that define Augusta National.

“This is part of our progressive agenda with Augusta National,” Syken said. “It’s just the start. You’ll see a new kind of representation of the course and holes by being able to look at holes slightly different. Just like the digital platforms themselves, we’re excited to bring some of those AI-powered features into Apple Vision Pro.

“It’s just another example of experimentation, pushing the edge and trying to bring new experiences to fans.”

Scottie Scheffler, shares lead at Masters, would leave if wife goes into labor

AUGUSTA, Ga. – Two years ago, Meredith Scheffler played a crucial role in her husband’s breakthrough Masters victory. Overwhelmed by the immensity of holding a 54-hole lead at Augusta National, Scottie Scheffler was brought to tears before teeing off on that Sunday in 2022.

It was Meredith who had the words to soothe her husband’s nerves.

“If you win this golf tournament today, if you lose this golf tournament by 10 shots, if you never win another golf tournament again, I'm still going to love you, you're still going to be the same person, Jesus loves you and nothing changes,” she said to him. Scottie, of course, went on to win his first Masters title that day.

Two years later, Scottie Scheffler is competing for another green jacket. After shooting even-par 72 on Friday, Scheffler shares the 36-hole lead at 6 under par alongside Max Homa and Bryson DeChambeau. This time, Meredith Scheffler will not be with her husband in Augusta. She is home in Dallas, pregnant with the couple’s first child.

Scottie is less likely to feel those same nerves this time around, however. He’s won the last two PGA TOUR Player of the Year Awards and now has eight PGA TOUR titles, including the past two PLAYERS Championships.

“What's missing? It's difficult to describe,” Scheffler said about his wife’s absence in Augusta. “But yeah, it's a bit weird. This is my first tournament without her being around in quite some time. Fortunately, Nike kind of takes care of my clothes this week so I don't have to pick my own outfits. I did make breakfast this morning, which was an adjustment.

“She's obviously my biggest supporter, and I definitely miss having her here,” he added. “But it's an exciting time for us in our lives, and fortunately she's still at home and feeling good, so we are grateful for that.”

Scheffler said earlier this week that he will head home to Dallas if his wife goes into labor, but that is not expected to happen this week.

“I wouldn't say I'm very concerned,” Scheffler said. “We haven't seen any of the early signs. But pregnancy is weird. It can happen at any time. (We have) open lines of communication and she can get ahold of me if she needs to.

“I'm ready to go at a moment's notice.”
