Take Me Home, Country Roads: The Story Behind West Virginia’s State Song

A country road in West Virginia

John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads” is one of West Virginia’s four official state songs. But West Virginia isn’t John Denver’s home, and his co-writer had never even been to the state before he wrote it. Here’s how this sometimes loved, sometimes mocked song became an icon of the Mountain State.

In late 1970, songwriters Billy Danoff and his wife Taffy Nivert had been working on a ballad about winding roads that they’d thought up while on a trip through western Maryland. The only problem was that the three syllables of Maryland didn’t fit the meter of the song. Danoff then thought maybe four-syllable Massachusetts would work, but actually, West Virginia would be even better. It didn’t matter that he’d never been to the state; he assumed they had beautiful mountains and winding roads too (which they do).

When Danoff and Nivert shared the song with country musician John Denver in the winter of 1970, he loved it. Although Denver was a lover of Colorado (and why his stage name was Denver instead of his given name Deutschendorf), the romance of the West Virginia hills must have been enough to make him want to record the song. Denver reworked some of the lyrics and put it out as the A-side of a 45 in 1971.

Even though the first stanza references the Shenandoah River and Blue Ridge Mountains—two geological features that only skim the very eastern panhandle of the state and are not closely related with the state—the beauty and pride expressed in the song made it an immediate hit in West Virginia. At West Virginia University in Morgantown , it was used as a pre-football game anthem already in 1972, and today, you shouldn’t show up at any WVU sporting event without knowing the lyrics, or risk making yourself known as a non-Mountaineer.

West Virginia also has three other state songs (“The West Virginia Hills,” “This is My West Virginia,” and “West Virginia, My Home Sweet Home”), but a celebrity factor and sheer popularity made “ Take Me Home, Country Roads ” an unofficial state song before it received the official honor in 2014.

West Virginia unveils new ‘Almost Heaven’ tourism campaign

More in latest news:.

west virginia tourism song

CHARLESTON, WV – Governor Jim Justice in partnership with the West Virginia Tourism Office today launched a new tourism campaign that positions West Virginia as “Almost Heaven” and invites visitors to find their version of heaven in the hills of West Virginia.

The campaign launch follows a two-week-long photo contest by Gov. Justice. The contest generated more than 7,000 submissions and helped to expand the Tourism Office photo gallery. The campaign features stunning photography that balances scenic beauty, outdoor recreation, and uniquely West Virginia activities and events.

“I’ve been saying for years that West Virginia is the best kept secret along the East Coast, and the time has finally come for us to tell our story and share ‘Almost Heaven’ with the world,” said Gov. Justice.

“Thanks to all of you, my fellow West Virginians, we now have a full library of photos that showcase West Virginia at her finest. That’s what this campaign is all about – sharing our beauty, our culture and our people with the world – and inviting folks to come into our home and find their version of heaven in West Virginia.”

The “Almost Heaven” campaign is inspired by the John Denver song, “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” The beloved song is an ode to West Virginia’s scenic beauty and warm hospitality, and it has served as the official state anthem since Denver first dubbed West Virginia “Almost Heaven” in 1971.

“We’re one of the only states to form our brand around a song, but as we looked for new ways to tell our story, we found that the answer was right in front of us all along – in the profound and highly coveted lyrics of ‘Country Roads,’ said Chelsea Ruby, West Virginia Tourism Commissioner.

“We know that visitors fall in love with the heaven-like feeling you get while traveling along our country roads and rolling hills. The goal of this campaign was to capture that feeling, the essence of ‘Almost Heaven,’ and share it with new visitors through advertising that aims to connect on a deeper, more personal level.”

With 86 percent of current travelers to West Virginia consisting of repeat visitors, the new campaign aims to increase first-time visitation and reach new travelers across the region, while continuing to inspire the state’s loyal visitor base.

Research conducted by the Tourism Office found that individuals’ perceptions of West Virginia were positivity affected after hearing West Virginia referred to as “Almost Heaven” and being exposed to the song “Country Roads.” The research-backed campaign will roll out to TV, radio, print, out-of-home, online and social media in regional markets starting next week.

The Tourism Office campaign launch marks phase one of the new brand execution. Plans are ongoing to implement the brand across other state agencies during phase two, including the West Vi

Almost heaven: West Virginia starts new tourism campaign

  • Copy Link copied

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia is embarking on a tourism advertising push using John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Roads.”

Gov. Jim Justice unveiled a video Wednesday as the centerpiece for the campaign that frames the iconic song and the mountainous state’s natural beauty. The campaign borrows the words “almost heaven” as its slogan.

Justice said that a key theme to the campaign is “even though you haven’t maybe been a West Virginian, once you come here, you will long to come back.”

Tourism Commissioner Chelsea Ruby said research shows 86 percent of people who come to West Virginia eventually return. But last year, only 14 percent were first-time visitors.

“We want to change the way people think about West Virginia,” Ruby said.

The song on the video is performed by the indie folk-pop group “The Sea The Sea,” whose lead singer, Mira Stanley, is a Charleston native.

The state tourism office previously obtained the rights to use “Take Me Home, Country Roads” in marketing. It’s been an unofficial West Virginia anthem almost since its 1971 release and was named an official state song in 2014.

“That’s really how we’re known all over the world. We are almost heaven,” Justice said. “For crying out loud, we’re trying to get our message out to the world to just see that we’re not dark and backward and dingy and dusty and everything. We’re not that. We’re a people and a state with beauty that’s unsurpassed anywhere. And we have so many opportunities.”

The campaign plans to spend about $3 million this spring and summer. Targeted out-of-state markets include Baltimore; Charlotte, North Carolina; Cleveland and Columbus, Ohio; Harrisburg, Lancaster and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Richmond and Roanoke, Virginia; and Washington, D.C.

One of Justice’s campaign themes before he was elected in 2016 was to make the state a tourism mecca that he hoped would create thousands of new jobs.

Justice said his post-graduate degree is in marketing and advertising, so “this is right in my wheelhouse.”

West Virginia officials have made similar overtures in the past decade.

In February 2014, tourism officials announced renewed promotional efforts for “Wild Wonderful West Virginia” after the state’s image took a hit from a chemical spill a month earlier that tainted the tap water for thousands of residents.

In 2009, then-Gov. Joe Manchin announced a “Come Home to West Virginia” economic stimulus campaign by the state Department of Commerce to try to get former residents to move back to the state.

Cue Country Roads

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The CBS Sunday Morning story on Country Roads is getting rave reviews.

CBS correspondent and West Virginia native Conor Knighton did a deep dive on the popularity of John Denver’s 1971 hit that is still sung around the world. Knighton’s piece focused on the longing the song creates not just for West Virginia but for wherever you’re from.

A song about a longing for home, John Denver’s first hit in 1971 has been embraced by West Virginia in a big way, and has been appropriated by singers around the world looking for their very own “place I belong.” https://t.co/1PgZEmo29q pic.twitter.com/MRz87CdiYI — CBS Sunday Morning ? (@CBSSunday) December 27, 2021

West Virginia Secretary of Tourism Chelsea said the story was right on target.

west virginia tourism song

“Anyone in my office will tell you that’s the number-1 thing we try to do in ads, we make sure that every ad we produce tries to give someone the feeling of longing, the pull to West Virginia. It was really cool to see,” Ruby said.

Knighton interviewed Bill Danoff, a friend of Denver’s and one of the song’s writers, showed many scenes of West Virginia and included clips fo the song being sung in several parts fo the world.

“We all take for granted how many people know and love this song but seeing those clips of people around the world singing it was really a special piece,” Ruby said.

Ruby said in the end you can’t beat the publicity.

“Any day that you can have 12 minutes of beautiful footage of West Virginia and Country Roads is a pretty good day in my book,” Ruby said.

. @conorknighton , a West Virginia native, did a piece on the @CBSSunday about “The Universal Nostalgia for “Take Me Home, Country Roads.” Chelsea Ruby, West Virginia Tourism Secretary, talks about that piece to @HoppyKercheval . The Division of Tourism, which purchased the rights to use the song four years ago, will continue to use it in 2022.

“We’ve had a variety of different artists singing it, each one has their own interpretation and you’ll hear even more from our office next year,” Ruby said.

Part of Knighton’s story featured West Virginia native, Country Music superstar, Brad Paisley who talked about how he thinks about his home state every time he hears Country Roads. Ruby said that’s what separates John Denver’s classic.

“A lot of states have songs but our song has this deep, emotional meaning to it and that’s something we can do a lot with,” Ruby said.

Withers was born in Slab Fork and raised in Beckley. He died in early 2020, leaving behind a legacy of songs that will be remembered for years to come. But one of his most popular songs is “Ain’t No Sunshine,” a song that lasted 16 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, peaking at number three.

According to the registry, Withers’ song was released in 1971 as a single for Sussex. “Ain’t No Sunshine” would end up on “Just As I Am.”
