In the annals of 21st century alternative rock history, there are few artists who cast a longer or more peculiar shadow than Finnish Love Metal pioneer Ville Valo. After all, his band HIM were easily among the most iconic and idiosyncratic groups of the millennium. Zealously revered, gleefully reviled but impossible to ignore, their music left an indelible mark on a worldwide legion of fans. The scarlet letters stood for His Infernal Majesty. Their founder stood for something delightedly out of step with the status quo. “We only hoped to temporarily redirect hard rock’s blood flow from the nether regions towards the heart”, reminisces Ville Valo, the singer, songwriter and primus motor of HIM. Judging by the monolithic presence of the Heartagram in any account of music this side of the millennium it’s apparent that he succeeded.

Inspired by everyone from Poe to Bukowski and tinged by a penchant for perfumed Sabbathian gloom, Valo’s creative lovechild would produce eight era-defining studio releases and over ten million record sales, not forgetting a Grammy nomination, countless magazine covers, critical acclaim, and the veneration of a generation. Thus, it came as no surprise that the news of a farewell tour in 2017 was greeted with shock and disbelief among devotees and endless speculation as to what or who was to take up the velvet mantle…

“This is a bridge between HIM and the future”: the resurrection of Ville Valo

Exclusive: Ville Valo opens up about his new VV project, his upcoming solo debut album and the chances of a HIM reunion

Ville Valo

It’s been a little under five years since Ville Valo laid goth metal icons HIM to rest, just over two since we last heard from him with the release of his debut VV EP. Now the crown prince of Love Metal is back with the promise of a new album, Neon Noir , and a string-flourishing, sheep-seducing new single called Loveletting . Hammer caught up with Ville to get the full story behind his solo career

Metal Hammer line break

Here we are then, Ville Valo finally back with new music! How are you feeling?

I’m shocked, after all the work I’ve done for the past two and a half years. When the shit hit the pan with the pandemic I just locked myself in my home studio and recorded the album, so I haven’t seen the sunlight too much. Which I guess is fine, as it fits the genre…

So is that where you’ve been this decade so far, locked away recording?

Yeah it’s been a weird couple of years, for everyone really. In the lowest moments over the past few years that’s been some comfort, knowing everybody is experiencing the same things. The main philosophical question I’ve been asking is, is there a reason to engage with the world right now? I think it’s a good idea to get away from it all, for a while. I needed to take time out to create something that felt unique to me and out in the open. I have a sofa in the studio so whenever I get super depressed I’d have the Churchill power nap. It was very centred around music and not a whole lot else. It was an interesting session, but it’ll take me a few years to fully unpack – I was basically doing 14 hours a day for two years.

There’s a great line in the VV bio about howling with the black dog, rather than barking at each other – do you find the record helped you work some of that out?

Music always needs to be cathartic. A lot of people have a lot of passion in their hobbies, things outside their work. But work is my passion, its my lifeline and keeps me afloat. It’s been really depressing; I’m a sensitive fella and I really thought by late 2020 everybody seemed down, particularly if you worked in music because there were no shows so all the musicians, the lighting technicians, road crews had no idea if they’d ever get to work again.

I’m not sure I’d say that made the album better, but it definitely gave me a kick up the butt to get out of that funk one way or another. You have to choose between the noose and the guitar, and for me the guitar has always been the better choice – especially in the long term.

The upcoming VV debut is your first solo album – did you play everything yourself?

I did everything on it, except for the mixing and mastering. It was mixed by Tim Palmer, who has done a lot of stuff in every imaginable genre, from Pearl Jam to Ozzy Osbourne to Sepultura to U2 and Tears For Fears. It was mastered at Sterling Sound in Nashville, but everything else I performed and engineered by myself.

It was quite the journey, but I could literally hear the fruit of my labour every day and could focus on the details as much as I wanted to. I didn’t have to think about the scheduling for different people, dealing with diaper changing sessions. It’s very undiluted, though whether that’s a good or bad thing is up for debate!

Ville Valo

When did you properly decide you wanted to jump back in with a solo career?

I still don’t know what this ‘career’ is. To me, it feels really surreal because I thought the whole thing has to start with a song, with the music I like to eventually put the album together. Now I’m trying to recruit a band and decide on what songs we’ll play, try to figure out the production for how it will look and sound. It’s still just ideas, right until we actually do it. I never made a decision like ‘I’m going to go solo’, but during the pandemic there was no way to put together a band so that fuelled the idea of working alone. Literally solo.

It seemed like you weren’t massively interested in music for a while after HIM split. Did you ever think about not coming back to music?

I wasn’t too interested in the HIM thing, but for pretty obvious reasons everybody was also pretty worn out by the end of that tour. It was also interesting not to know how we’d feel spiritually about the change – it’s easy to make the announcement ‘oh, HIM are splitting up’ but I was worried because I’d been playing with those guys since I was 14 years old. I wasn’t sure if it would feel like losing a limb.

I talked to Mige [Mikko Paananen, HIM bassist] after the last gig and we both just felt so relieved that it worked out so great, on so many levels. I needed to take a little breather. I did an album with this local band that do pop music in Finnish [Agents] and we did an album in Finland and toured it in 2019, that was what I needed to clean myself after the process because I was singing to a very different audience. Trying not to curse as much! I’ve been trying to figure it out by doing various little things, but at the same time the new stuff definitely does sound like HIM. But I did write most of the songs, so… I’m to blame for that.

It's a continuous journey from HIM for me. A lot of people when they move on to solo projects want to distance themselves from the past, burn bridges and start their solo career. It’s different for me. VV is me building a bridge between HIM and the future. That’s what Neon Noir is. I wrote organically, because I don’t think you should decide before you’ve even picked up the guitar how something should sound. It’s not good for any creative work.

What or who was the inspiration behind the single Loveletting?

It was probably the black dog, depression. We’re all aware of that Murphy’s Law where things go pear shaped all the time and with the pandemic and personal stuff, not knowing where to go next, as well as not knowing where we belong, it created this feeling that went beyond depression, like a cosmic feeling of not belonging. That’s the stuff I try to put into the music and Loveletting can be read in many ways, it’s a double-edged sword. It’s very dream-like – you get those feverish dreams, where you’re not sure what is real and what isn’t. It’s not a new concept, but we Finns are pretty slow.

That video: how much fun was it seducing a sheep?

Ha ha ha! It was great. We thought about more traditional animals like gothic owls or bats. The director suggested a black sheep and I loved it – it was an opportunity to do something a bit weird, but also very endearing. Usually music videos aren’t fun to shoot, so trying to make them different always makes it special. So to me, that will always be ‘the sheep video’. The black sheep is the universal symbol of the outsider, for the people who don’t belong. I love animals too – I’d never met a black sheep in real life. I like the video because once I’d seen it, I was like ‘wait, what the fuck?’ which is the best reaction you can get to a video these days.

How representative of the sound of the album is Loveletting ?

Loveletting is one of the more mellow songs. I’ve always been shit with picking singles – I’m always wrong, so I let the label choose that and everybody was smiling when they heard it the first time, so they suggested it. I’m hoping the next one will be a lot more rock’n’roll, harder hitting. The album is pretty varied – like Love Metal by HIM, it gets Sabbathy at times, but it goes more proggy with more soundscapes in between. Loveletting has a bit of Anathema in it – it reminds me of their stuff, very heartfelt, emotional and melancholic. Pretty and dirty at the same time.

What floats your boat musically these days?

“Not too much. Deafheaven’s latest album was pretty weird. Infinite Granite doesn’t have much metal in, but its great because its very moody. Also Anna Calvi. I got into the British band Wild Beasts, but only after they’d split up. It doesn’t show in what I do musically, but I like a lot of music that goes left of centre. There’s a few indie bands I’ve been listening to, and Twin Tribes from the States. They’re a duo who basically rip off everything that’s been done in the past, but they do it beautifully. They’ve got some great stuff and I’ve been forcing myself to get back into the goth scene because I think the future is there.”

There seems to be a decent goth revival right now with bands like Unto Others, Grave Pleasures and Tribulation all creating waves

“Absolutely. It’s not all just Sisters Of Mercy style goth, either. There are bands pulling from the post-punk stuff from before it actually went goth. I think it’s a good time for all that stuff. I’ve been interested in black metal again, but it’s a messy business. It’s like classical music – it’s so hard to find the really good albums because there are so many.”

How much of the solo album is recorded?

It’s totally recorded now. One of the reasons its done so early is because of delays with the vinyl plants – it takes eight months to get vinyl out these days, but I don’t really know why. Plus I like to be early and have long deadlines as I’ve got to get a band together. I’m sure it’ll be fine and dandy, but there’ll be a load of rehearsals to be done and I’m one of those people who needs to rehearse shit tonnes. It’s going to be a weird year, but I’m determined not to stain the memory of the HIM songs.

Are all the songs on the album brand new or are there any HIM holdovers?

Some of the ideas, like the verses from Loveletting were actually from 2014/2015. I always have bits and bobs that take a while to find their place. It’s gonna be interesting when we go to the rehearsal studio and start working on how these new songs and HIM songs will fit in the set – that’s a really important part of working out this identity.

Can you give us some song titles, or lyrical themes?

Not yet. I know the details of the songs obviously, but there’s a whole plan for it all. I’ll do the strumming and humming. I can give you one title – its called Echolocate Your Love . I think it’s a fantastic title and the idea is that there are times when you need to close your eyes to see better.

Have you had any big bucks offers to reunite HIM yet? And would he do it if there was enough money on the table?

That’s a multi-tentacled question! When we decided to call it quits with HIM, we never said it wouldn’t mean we’d never jam together again. It’s all about timing and the timing isn’t right, right now. We had a good run and were wise enough to end it before we got to each other’s throats. It worked out good in retrospect, but for a lot of bands it doesn’t so I don’t want to stress that element out too much. It’s a fine balance and I’d rather not mess it up because it left a sweet taste in everyone’s mouth.

But then again, there’s the part B of the question! I don’t really care too much about the monetary side of it. If there was a good reason , I’d be much more interested – whether that’s a festival, a tour or whatever else. I’ve been in touch with Mige a lot, but not so much the others. He’s been a spiritual producer for the album, coming over to my house and hearing the mixes, not necessarily offering advice but nodding his head approvingly. We’re still close and maybe one day we can share a stage again.

HIM

Last year marked 30 years since the formation of HIM – how do you feel about the band’s legacy these days?

I’ve been surprised about the youth getting into all the early 00s metal bands. It’s cool seeing Heartagram t-shirts alongside Type O Negative and Paradise Lost shirts – we’re in good company. Nothing’s new under the sun, so everything comes back at some point. Hopefully it happens while I’m on tour! But when you’re in a band you don’t worry about that, you’re lost in the moment thinking about where the next slice of pizza is coming from, or where the closest toilet is.

I don’t think I’ve had enough time to sit back and reflect on what went wrong and what went right. As human beings, we’re all going to make mistakes and with VV I’m hoping to make a bunch of new mistakes. Hopefully not repeating the previous ones!

Do you think there is more love in metal now than when you first started out?

Not my kind! Back in the days of yore, its weird thinking of bands like Linkin Park and Evanescence who felt way too poppy. They were very mainstream and you’d think ‘I’m not sure this is the real deal’, but they’re like Burzum compared to some of the shit these days. There’s a lot you get now with loads of electronica and the songs are super edited, with a dash of guitars. I’m not sure what they want to achieve with that, like you want people to headbang every now and again. I’m not happy with where things are going like that, which is why I’ve gravitated more towards weirder bands.

But then, that’s mistaking love for commerce. If there’s any heartfelt sentiment going on in the realm of hard rock, that’s always a positive. It doesn’t have to be romantic love, just something you’re truly passionate about.

VV’s debut Neon Noir is due early 2023

Half a decade on from the end of gothic rock heroes HIM, frontman Ville Valo is gearing up to release his debut solo album. And in Neon Noir, not only did the Finnish icon find a reason to keep going during the pandemic, it also sees Ville still very much enjoying his dreamy journey into the dark side…

Come New Year’s Eve, it will be five years since Ville Valo stepped offstage with HIM for the final time. Over the two decades and change of the band’s life, the Finnish Love Metal icons had made a tradition of playing a show in Helsinki on the last night of the year. The fixture at the city’s Tavastia venue on December 31, 2017, came at the end of the band’s Bang & Whimper Tour. They’d said goodbye to London, to Paris, to Berlin, Amsterdam and Milan and many other places that had fallen in love with them and made them icons of a type of rock music that spoke more with its heart and its lips than with its fists. As they bid their hometown farewell, and Ville woke up on the first day of 2018, the singer realised something: “It didn’t feel like anything was different.”

Pondering this today from his home in Helsinki – sadly no longer the imposing tower in which he once resided – he still sounds like he expected to feel more grief, more sadness, more something than what he actually did.

“I thought that, since we played together as a band for such a long time, and HIM was and still is such a big part of who I am, that it would feel more like losing a limb or that there would be some sort of, at least psychological, but also maybe a physical change,” he says. “But there was nothing.”

“I thought it would feel more like losing a limb…”

The shows were good, he smiles. He was glad that the band “went out with music”. They’re still friends. The show at Tavastia, he adds, “wasn’t emotional”, but it was “the right way to do it”, even if "maybe we should have ended it a little earlier." Either way, it was clearly time to wrap up. And so, from million-selling global goth metal icon, Ville Valo effectively became an unemployed civilian overnight.

Half a decade on, and nine years since HIM’s last album, 2013’s Tears On Tape swansong, the dark light is beginning to shine again. In March 2020, having spent some post-HIM time doing “Hank Marvin type stuff from my parents’ record collection” with Finnish-language retro troupe Agents, the singer surprise-dropped a three-track EP under the banner VV, entitled Gothica Fennica Vol. 1 . Now, having spent two years during COVID locked away in his own studio, playing every instrument himself – “Like the Dark Prince meets Prince ” – Ville Valo is making a full return with debut VV album, Neon Noir .

It’s all very Ville. The songs are all cut from a similarly Sabbath -goes-post-punk-with-a-poetry-book cloth as one might be used to, touching on “Kyuss’ Welcome To Sky Valley, but also a lot of post-punk stuff like Siouxsie And The Banshees and Cocteau Twins”. They have stylishly gothic names like Run Away From The Sun, Loveletting and Baby Lacrimarium. When this is put to him, he laughs his charming, self-effacing chuckle and nods, “Yeah, that last one’s the most typically me title anyone could write, isn’t it?”

Having come to the end of the road with HIM, given himself and the world “a bit of a breather, some distance”, apparently you can take the goth out of the metal band…

“Doing this album, and doing it the way I did it, gave me a chance to reflect, in a way, or to have a different perspective of who I am or what I want to do and what I have done and what can be done better, and so forth,” he says, before bursting out laughing again. “Which then ended up being basically doing exactly the same thing I had before.”

Then Ville laughs some more. “So, nothing’s new under the sun.”

God, it’s good to have him back.

Neon Noir was put together during COVID. Though Ville says “it’s not the wisest thing to sit down and really start to think about what you’re doing, it’s better to just go with the flow,” he knew this thing was to be a true solo project – him alone.

“I always wanted to work on music, but I really didn’t want to put together a new band,” he explains. “It just felt like something I honestly don’t want to do, because 25-plus years [in HIM] was a lot. And there’s a lot of love for that band. It just didn’t feel right.”

Instead, he worked alone. He insists that “I’m a very limited fellow as a musician,” but as HIM’s principle songwriter, he’s also got a track record of being very good at it. But where other members of the band would previously have added their own flair to the music, here Ville had to look at his craft in a different way.

“We knew each other so very well as musicians that I kind of knew how Mige would play his bass and Linde [Lindström] would play his guitar and so forth. So I kind of wrote most of the songs with them in mind. This time around, since they weren’t around, I only had myself in mind.

“What I found exhilarating was the fact that I was able to continue to work if I found a melody I enjoyed,” he adds. “I was able to continue working on that particular melody straight from that point, until I fell asleep. There were no schedules, there were no rehearsals, there was no nothing. I just started working on the entire thing, sort of building the puzzle as I went.”

Admitting that he “quite enjoys solitude”, the album also provided Ville with an escape during the pandemic. With no deadline, and the boss of his own label that would be putting out the finished product, it was unlike any record of the dozen or so to which he had previously put his name.

“It enabled me to be in a creative space, or a meditative space, for more or less two years,” he says. “I wasn’t thinking about anything else besides the album from the morning until I went to sleep. God bless my girlfriend for her patience. It’s hard to put into words but it was very intense, and it was like a journey into yourself. It makes you relearn what you appreciate, and relearn the little subtleties in music that make the world go around. That make my world go around.”

ville valo tour 2022

The darkness of the album is of the romantic stripe with which Ville long ago made his bones, echoing professionally miserable British doom bands like Paradise Lost , Cathedral and My Dying Bride . He jokingly calls it, “an evolutionary tale of what happens when you lock a Finnish musician in a home studio for the entire duration of the pandemic with no sunlight in sight”. But even by Finnish standards of gloom, where the sun is down for almost half the year and the long, freezing winters do their best to kill you, the pandemic still managed to cast its shadow.

“I wouldn’t call it ‘suicidal’, but most of the stuff was written during the pandemic, and there weren’t many rays of sun hitting me,” Ville shares. “Everybody was in the mental gutter. Times were tough. This album was the kind of like the lifebuoy for me. It gave me a reason to wake up every morning and work on something else and try to shut the world outside. When I was working on the music, maybe it was selfish to a certain extent, but also it was a matter of survival.”

“It was a matter of survival”

In putting this into words Ville, a man who’s written more than one song about the dark side, discovered that his quill was far from dry. Basically about love and darkness? Yes, mainly. But that’s his whole bit.

“It seems that mankind needs a bit of a breather from all this shit, myself included. So I tried to put all that frustration onto paper,” he says. “And if it’s love and darkness, and all sorts of things like that, that’s probably because it’s my vocabulary. Hopefully, the words have been rearranged in a fresh order this time around. But me trying to do something completely different, just because, that doesn’t make any sense to me at all.”

Talking to him today, not much has changed about Ville Valo at all since we last encountered him. Or, indeed, when first we did. Now aged 45, he refers to himself as “an old dog”, but his pretzel-dry sense of humour, louche demeanour, boyish laugh and warm charm are as present as ever. He still talks with a cheeky, curiously upper-class English twang, occasionally sounding like a Finnish Terry Thomas, and though he admits to not having listened to his heroes Black Sabbath in a while (currently he’s on a goth tip, giving the thumbs up to mysterious, face-painted Brit duo Zetra ), Ville still references them half a dozen times over the course of conversation.

To call him humble isn’t quite right. Modest would be a better word. As a man now able to look back from a distance at being the face of a band as big and important as HIM – 2003’s Love Metal breakthrough sold over a million, while the constant patronage of Heartagram-tattooed Jackass bloke and superfan of the band Bam Margera put them on TV screens across America in the 2000s – this is perhaps not unexpected. But even in the eye of the storm, Ville was always like this, even when he was a Kerrang! cover fixture and being hailed as the sex symbol rock’n’roll had been missing for so long.

ville valo tour 2022

“If people come up and call me an icon or something, I start to blush,” he smiles. “I feel uncomfortable, and I switch bars. When I’m in a situation like that, I do enjoy compliments. But you know, as everybody does, but I’m not too social of a person. I feel awkward in situations like that. I think at the time I just drank my way through it all. That wasn’t good way of handling that – go to the pub, go to [sadly shuttered London drinking den] The Crobar. That saved me and destroyed me at the same time.

“But I’m glad for both, you know, I was burning my candle at both ends,” he continues. “I don’t think I would have done anything different. It would have been maybe good to have somebody tell us, ‘Maybe you should relax for a wee bit.’ And by relaxing, I actually mean relaxing, not to go to the pub and not to write more songs. Just to recharge your batteries, because every rock band burns themselves out at one point or another. But I'm not complaining. And it’s great that I did all those mistakes – I don’t have to make them now.”

‘Now’ for Ville Valo means a new album, and a new tour. Next year, he’ll return to London to perform for the first time since 2017. He’s nervous, but more than that, he’s excited.

“The size of the butterflies in my stomach are gargantuan, something that I never knew existed,” he smiles. “I have, not necessarily high hopes, but I think next year will be a colourful one. It’ll be filled with new experiences.”

ville valo tour 2022

And for those wondering about setlists already, “It’s going to be half-and-half new stuff and HIM stuff. It’s not as if we’ll just play Buried Alive By Love as an encore and that’s it.

“It’s a continuation of what I’ve done in the past and, you know, what might happen next,” he says. “Basically I’m just doing exactly what all the rock’n’rollers are doing. The only thing I’m not doing these days is going topless – you know, by that I mean older gentleman behaving like they’re 20 and cool.”

After so long, if not quite in the wilderness, certainly not as visible as he once was, it’s heartening that Ville Valo is the same as ever. Neon Noir does have familiarities, but there’s a personality of its own upon which everything else is built. Most importantly, this is just who he is and what he does. Sex and darkness again, is it? Well, what else is there?

“I’m not very good at planning or doing Plan Bs,” he says. “[After HIM] I wasn’t really thinking about an alternative, because I don’t like studying too much. Not a great student – my patience is nil. Maybe I’d be a roadie or something – I like carrying stuff around. Maybe I’d be doing gardening, that’s kind of the same thing.”

“Maybe I’d be a roadie!”

But for now, gardening’s loss is still very much rock’s gain. Although even after all these years, you probably still have to convince Ville that he’s not a blagger and that he’s meant to be here.

“I still consider all the HIM guys to be fanboys in essence,” he finishes. “We started because we loved Sabbath and KISS and Maiden and whatnot. And we still do. We felt like visitors in the in their land, in their realm.

“I kind of still do think that,” he laughs. “I’m stuck in limbo between heaven and hell.”

Neon Noir is due out on January 13 via Heartagram Records, distributed by UMG/ Spinefarm – pre-order the album here. Ville Valo will tour the UK in March 2023.

HIM’s Ville Valo Announces Debut Solo Album and 2023 US Tour, Shares “Loveletting”: Stream

HIM frontman Ville Valo has announced his debut solo album, Neon Noir , set for an early 2023 release under the VV moniker. The Finnish artist also announced a 2023 US tour and unveiled a new song, “Loveletting.”

As the self-described pioneer of “love metal,” Valo has penned more than a few romantic songs. “Loveletting” takes the pedal off the metal but still features Valo’s typical heartfelt lyrics and emotion.

“As fun as the funeral rites for HIM were, it took me more than a few moons to lick my wounds in the shadow of the Heartagram and come up with an excuse to strum and hum again,” Valo said in a press release. “Eventually, I decided to put a leash on my beloved black dog and we started howling together instead of barking at each other. That’s how ‘Loveletting’ was born.”

The release of the new single sets in motion the album cycle for Neon Noir . Ostensibly coinciding with the LP’s release, VV will head across the states next spring. The itinerary kicks off April 1st, 2023, in Philadelphia and winds across most major US markets before wrapping up on May 8th in New York City.

Pre-sales for the 2023 US tour begin today (April 8th) at 10 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster .

Valo added: “Artistically speaking, the main difference between HIM and VV is the extra line in the Heartagram, but what an exquisite line it is! It’s the Mamas and the Papas dressed up as Metallica on their way to a Halloween bash at the Studio 54, and now who wouldn’t want to witness that?”

In the annals of 21st century alternative rock history there are few artists who cast a longer or more peculiar shadow than Finnish Love Metal pioneer  Ville Valo . After all, his band  HIM  were easily among the most iconic and idiosyncratic groups of the millenium. Zealously revered, gleefully reviled but impossible to ignore, their music left an indelible mark on a worldwide legion of fans. The scarlet letters stood for  His Infernal Majesty . Their founder stood for something delightedly out of step with the status quo.

“We only hoped to temporarily redirect hard rock’s blood flow from the nether regions towards the heart”,  reminisces  Ville Valo , the singer, songwriter and primus motor of  HIM . Judging by the monolithic presence of the Heartagram in any account of music this side of the millennium it’s apparent that he succeeded.

Inspired by everyone from  Poe  to  Bukowski  and tinged by a penchant for perfumed Sabbathian gloom,  Valo ’s creative lovechild would produce eight era-defining studio releases and over ten million record sales, not forgetting a  Grammy  nomination, countless magazine covers, critical acclaim, and the veneration of a generation. Thus it came as no surprise that the news of a farewell tour in 2017 was greeted with shock and disbelief among devotees and endless speculation as to what or who was to take up the velvet mantle.

“As fun as the funeral rites for HIM were, it took me more than a few moons to lick my wounds in the shadow of the Heartagram and come up with an excuse to strum and hum again. Eventually I decided to put a leash on my beloved black dog and we started howling together instead of barking at each other. That’s how the album Neon Noir was born”.

The answer came earlier this year with the melodious exsanguination of first single  ‘Loveletting ’, followed by the elegiac goth-optimism of ‘ Echolocate Your Love’ , which  Valo  described as, ‘a teary mascara marathon between  Robert Smith  and  Ozzy , with a dash of hope.’ Now, with the glow of  Neon Noir  fast approaching comes the driving, nocturnal radiance of ‘ The Foreverlost’ , an uptempo paean to doomed romance and a confident affirmation of  Valo ’s peerless ability to imbue timeless songwriting and balladry with a whiff of roses and brimstone.

“’The Foreverlost’ is yet another loud love song depicting the burlesque butoh between two world-weary souls,”  he says.  “All my Carmina Buranas and could’ve would’ve rolled into a neat little Gordian knot of the gothic variety.”

HIM's VILLE VALO Announces Release Date For 'Neon Noir' Debut Solo Album

HIM mastermind Ville Valo ( VV ) will release his debut solo album, "Neon Noir" , on January 13 via Heartagram Records , distributed by UMG / Spinefarm .

" 'Neon Noir' is a sonic step-by-step guide on how to survive, and perhaps even enjoy, the realm of VV with its abundance of things that go bump in the night," says Valo . "It's a teary mascara marathon between Robert Smith and Ozzy , with a dash of hope."

Regarding the lyrical inspiration for the album, Ville told Kerrang! magazine: "I wouldn't call it 'suicidal', but most of the stuff was written during the pandemic, and there weren't many rays of sun hitting me. Everybody was in the mental gutter. Times were tough. This album was the kind of like the lifebuoy for me. It gave me a reason to wake up every morning and work on something else and try to shut the world outside. When I was working on the music, maybe it was selfish to a certain extent, but also it was a matter of survival."

He added: "It seems that mankind needs a bit of a breather from all this shit, myself included. So I tried to put all that frustration onto paper. And if it's love and darkness, and all sorts of things like that, that's probably because it's my vocabulary. Hopefully, the words have been rearranged in a fresh order this time around. But me trying to do something completely different, just because, that doesn't make any sense to me at all."

"Neon Noir" track listing:

01. Echolocate Your Love 02. Run Away From The Sun 03. Neon Noir 04. Loveletting 05. The Foreverlost 06. Baby Lacrimarium 07. Salute The Sanguine 08. In Trenodia 09. Heartful Of Ghosts 10. Saturnine Saturnalia 11. Zener Solitaire 12. Vertigo Eyes

Earlier this month, Ville released "Echolocate Your Love" , the second single from "Neon Noir" . "Echolocate Your Love" came five months after the arrival of "Loveletting" , which marked Ville 's first new music in over two years, following the release of the three-track "Gothica Fennica Vol. 1" EP, also released under the VV banner, in March 2020.

Like "Echolocate Your Love" and "Loveletting" , "Gothica Fennica Vol. 1" bore a strong musical resemblance to HIM and featured the tracks "Salute The Sanguine" , "Run Away From The Sun" and "Saturnine Saturnalia" .

Back in April, Ville told Metal Hammer that "Loveletting" was one of the more mellow songs on "Neon Noir" . Ville said: "I've always been shit with picking singles — I'm always wrong, so I let the label choose that and everybody was smiling when they heard it the first time, so they suggested it. I'm hoping the next one will be a lot more rock 'n' roll, harder hitting."

Regarding the musical direction of "Neon Noir" , Ville told Metal Hammer : "The new stuff definitely does sound like HIM . But I did write most of the songs, so… I'm to blame for that. It's a continuous journey from HIM for me. A lot of people when they move on to solo projects want to distance themselves from the past, burn bridges and start their solo career. It's different for me. VV is me building a bridge between HIM and the future. That's what 'Neon Noir' is."

Ville spoke to Spotify about why it has taken him so long to complete "Neon Noir" . "Since the pandemic hit, I started working on the album," he explained. "I actually learned how to record — I learned how to record drums and bass and guitar because I wasn't able to get any musicians; I had to do it solo — literally solo. So I'm really sorry but it did take me two and a half years to get the album done. 'Loveletting' is the first single. It's kind of what I normally do — it's a loud love song; it's a very sad and melancholy wistful one, but sort of maybe light at the end of the tunnel which is hopefully not the oncoming train.

"So there's not much new under the sun of VV , but I love it. [ Laughs ]"

VV 's headline tour dates will take place next year across Europe and North America. Naturally starting in Helsinki, Finland, the 2023 extensive run reaches the U.K. in March before heading to America come April.

HIM completed a farewell tour in 2017, closing the final chapter on the band's 26-year career. At the time, Ville explained to Kerrang! magazine why the band decided to call it a day. "We were tired of the same shit," he said. "When you've done it for a long time, at some point it doesn't taste good anymore. We started working on some stuff, it didn't sound good enough, and we didn't get the teenage buzz you're supposed get."

He also discussed the future of his artistic and musical endeavors.

"I'll be figuring out the emotions I'll be going through after the HIM period is done," he said. "That's how I experience life. I experience it through music, I'll pick up the guitar and start writing and I'm sure some of the emotions that come out of this wild ride will come through. My life is not done yet. The HIM part is done, as it is now, the chapter is closed, but the book is still unfinished…"

Formed in 1991 by Valo , guitarist Mikko "Linde" Lindström and bassist Mikko "Migé" Paananen , HIM offered the world a new take on the metal genre, which became known as "love metal" (also the title of their fourth album).

HIM in 2015 parted ways with its longtime drummer, Mika Kristian Karppinen (a.k.a. Gas Lipstick ),and replaced him with Jukka "Kosmo" Kröger (formerly of HERRA YLPPÖ & IHMISET ).

Three years ago, Valo teamed up with guitar legend Esa Pulliainen to record an album based on songs by the late, legendary Finnish singer Rauli "Badding" Somerjoki . The self-titled album by VILLE VALO & AGENTS was released in February 2019 and was followed by a short tour.

The Meaning Behind The Song: Loveletting by VV (Ville Valo)

Introduction:

Music has the power to evoke emotions, heal deep wounds, and express the unspoken. Ville Valo, the renowned Finnish musician known for his work with the band HIM, released his first solo album Neon Noir in 2022. The lead single from this album, “Loveletting”, captivates listeners with its poetic lyrics and haunting melodies. In this article, we will explore the meaning behind the song and its personal significance to me.

Meaning of the Song:

As I delve into the lyrics of “Loveletting”, I see a narrative of heartbreak, longing, and the paradoxical nature of love. The song opens with Ville Valo expressing an enduring sorrow that tears apart the potential of what could have been between two people. The pre-chorus reveals love as a road walked alone, an endless night continuously dreamt of. It portrays love as both a source of hope and a solitary journey.

The chorus emphasizes the disconnect between two hearts, out of sync and crying. It speaks of the pain of dreaming about love but being unable to fully experience it. The lyrics evoke a sense of yearning and vulnerability, as the desire for unity and connection remains unfulfilled.

In the second verse, Valo describes being trapped in a loop, chasing shadows of all that has been lost and will never come to fruition. The pre-chorus once again emphasizes the solitary nature of love, as Valo sings about love being the song he sings alone and the darkness he keeps dreaming of.

The bridge repeats the phrase “heartbeats out of sync with each other,” emphasizing the theme of disconnection and the emotional distance between two individuals. It amplifies the sense of longing and highlight the complexity of human relationships.

The final chorus adds a touch of beauty to the song, as Valo describes the subject as being in the light of the setting sun. It suggests a glimmer of hope and the possibility of finding solace in accepting the emotional distance that exists between two people.

Personal Experience:

Listening to “Loveletting” takes me on a deeply introspective journey, bringing back memories of past relationships and unfulfilled desires. The melancholic melodies and poignant lyrics resonate with moments of heartache and longing that I have experienced in my own life.

The song speaks to the universal experience of unrequited love, where the connection between two people is hindered by circumstances or emotional barriers. It reminds me of instances where I yearned for a deeper connection but felt the weight of emotional distance.

Despite the emotional heaviness the song carries, it also offers a sense of solace and catharsis. It serves as a reminder that the pain of unrequited love is a part of the human experience, and that it is possible to find beauty in embracing the longing and accepting the circumstances we cannot change.

The haunting melodies of “Loveletting” serve as a comforting presence, allowing me to process and navigate through my own emotions. It reminds me that music has the power to heal, offering a sense of connection, understanding, and even closure.

Conclusion:

Ville Valo’s “Loveletting” captures the essence of heartbreak, longing, and the complexities of love. The song’s poetic lyrics and melancholic melodies evoke a range of emotions and provide solace to those who have experienced emotional distance in personal relationships.

Listening to “Loveletting” and dissecting its meaning has allowed me to delve into my own experiences and find solace in the shared emotions of others. It serves as a touching reminder that music can be a powerful companion through life’s trials and tribulations.

So, the next time you find yourself caught in the web of unrequited love or longing, let the melodies of “Loveletting” remind you that you are not alone and that there is beauty in embracing the complexities of human connection.

Un tourism | bringing the world closer.

Unwto 2021: a year in review, 2021: tourism united, resilient and determined.

2021 has been a year of learning and adapting for tourism. It has proven that only by working together can the sector overcome challenges and embrace opportunities.

Gathering the global tourism community and developing concrete actions, UNWTO has led tourism’s response with the vision of not only restarting, but doing so in a more inclusive, innovative and sustainable way.

Jan

January - March

As global tourism faced up to a second year of unprecedented crisis , UNWTO began 2021 by counting the cost so far . At the same time, however, the emergence of vaccines brought hope . The Global Tourism Crisis Committee met to explore what this meant for safe travel and the restart of tourism, while the announcement of the winners of the UNWTO Global Start-up Competition recognized the role culture and creativity will play in tourism’s restart and recovery .

Feb

April - June

Collaboration and innovation were the focusat the start of the second quarter. UNWTO partnered with IATA on a new Destination Tracker to give both tourists and destinations clear, impartial and trusted advice. And a new Start-up Competition was launched to find the best ideas for accelerating rural development through tourism. In May, the launch of the Best Tourism Villages by UNWTO generated significant interest from Members in every global region.

Mar 2021

July - September

As destinations in Europe welcomed tourists back for the peak summer season, UNWTO highlighted the role of  digital solutions for the safe restart of the sector. But UNWTO also looked ahead, to a more sustainable future , working with key partners to  reduce plastic waste and consumption across every part of the sector. Together, we celebrated World Tourism Day around the theme of Tourism for Inclusive Growth, a message of solidarity and determination that was echoed on a global scale.

April 2021

October - December

The final quarter of 2021 began with cautious optimism as UNWTO’s Barometer showed signs of improvement in tourist arrival numbers during the summer season in the northern hemisphere. A new partnership with Netflix will bring the message of tourism as a driver of opportunity to a massive global audience, while in November, UNWTO was tourism’s voice at COP26 and signatories to the landmark Glasgow Declaration keep growing. Finally, against the backdrop of the UNWTO General Assembly , the programme of work for the coming biennium was approved and 77% of Members voted to secure a second mandate for the Secretary-General from 2022-2025.

Growing and Moving Forward

UNWTO brings together political leaders from across the globe to deliver a strong, coordinated response. Governments, destinations, fellow UN agencies and international organizations met at key international events joining efforts to rethink tourism. Institutional coordination has proven crucial to find the solutions that build a smarter, greener and safer tourism.

Leaving Nobody Behind

The pledge to ‘ leave nobody behind ’ means nobody should miss out : Not now as we support the sector in the face of crisis, and not in the future as tourism starts again. Tourism is a proven driver of equality and opportunity. And that’s why we turn words into actions, delivering guidelines and action plans , to ensure everyone can enjoy the opportunities tourism brings.

A Shared Vision

Advancing the transformation of the tourism sector , partnerships are the only way forward. In 2021, UNWTO signed agreements with international organizations and the private sector to step our vision for the future of tourism: innovation , education , sustainability , green investment , rural development.

World Tourism Barometer: September 2022

UNWTO updates World Tourism Barometer and reports international tourism back to 60% of pre-pandemic levels from January to July 2022

unwto tourism highlights 2022

Below are excerpts from the September 2022 release of the UNWTO Tourism Barometer :

  • The steady recovery reflects strong pent-up demand for international travel, especially in the months of June and July which are part of the Northern Hemisphere summer season. The easing or lifting of travel restrictions in an increasing number of countries also contributed to boost results.
  • International tourist arrivals almost tripled (+172%) in January-July 2022 compared to the same period of 2021. Numbers climbed from -64% in January 2022 (versus 2019) to -28% in July, the strongest month since the start of the pandemic.
  • Asia and the Pacific (+165%) saw arrivals more than double in the first seven months of 2022, though they remained 86% below 2019 levels.
  • The ongoing recovery can also be seen in outbound tourism spending from major source markets. Expenditure from France was at -12% in January-July 2022 compared to 2019 while spending from Germany stood at -14%. International tourism spending remained at -10% in Belgium, -23% in Italy and -26% in the United States.
  • The uncertain economic environment seems to have reversed prospects for a return to pre-pandemic levels in the near term. 61% of UNWTO Panel of Experts now see a potential return of international arrivals to 2019 levels in 2024 or later while those indicating a return to pre-pandemic levels in 2023 has diminished (27%) compared to the May survey (48%).

TOURISM TRENDS 2022

unwto tourism highlights 2022

11 Aug TOURISM TRENDS 2022

The situation for tourism remains rather unusual as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The crisis has marked a significant change for everyone, and above all for tourism, one of sectors hit hardest by the virus. 2020 was the year in which international tourism came to a near-complete standstill, and the only alternatives were domestic and local tourism.

2021 has seen some improvements, but only in a very subtle way as restrictions are still in place and many countries keep their borders fully or partially closed.

It is difficult to make an estimate for 2022 as it is not known how the pandemic will evolve. However, it is possible to talk about the new tourism trends that are likely to emerge over the coming year: – International travel with restrictions still maintained by both destinations and airlines in order to offer 100% security to the consumer.

– Reinforcement of COVID-19 testing; two years after the pandemic, COVID testing will still be in place as a preventive measure. – Conscious travel will be advocated. Travel to more distant destinations, but with prolonged durations of stay, as consumers look to enjoy as much of each place they visit as possible. – Green travel. Climate change is a problem that is present and growing. Consumers now are much more responsible and aware of the reality they live in on daily basis.

– A new trend is the “ed-ventures”. It is about combining education and holidays for the youngest members of the family. While adults may need to telework or attend meetings, their children can be doing workshops and learning in a playful way.

For the first time Rosatom Fuel Division supplied fresh nuclear fuel to the world’s only floating nuclear cogeneration plant in the Arctic

The fuel was supplied to the northernmost town of Russia along the Northern Sea Route.

The first in the history of the power plant refueling, that is, the replacement of spent nuclear fuel with fresh one, is planned to begin before 2024. The manufacturer of nuclear fuel for all Russian nuclear icebreakers, as well as the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, is Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC), a company of Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL that is based in Elektrostal, Moscow Region.

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactors of the icebreaking type. Unlike convenient ground-based large reactors (that require partial replacement of fuel rods once every 12-18 months), in the case of these reactors, the refueling takes place once every few years and includes unloading of the entire reactor core and loading of fresh fuel into the reactor.

The cores of KLT-40 reactors of the Akademik Lomonosov floating power unit have a number of advantages compared to the reference ones: a cassette core was used for the first time in the history of the unit, which made it possible to increase the fuel energy resource to 3-3.5 years between refuelings, and also reduce the fuel component of the electricity cost by one and a half times. The FNPP operating experience formed the basis for the designs of reactors for nuclear icebreakers of the newest series 22220. Three such icebreakers have been launched by now.

For the first time the power units of the Akademik Lomonosov floating nuclear power plant were connected to the grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020. The supply of nuclear fuel from Elektrostal to Pevek and its loading into the second reactor is planned for 2024. The total power of the Akademik Lomonosov FNPP, supplied to the coastal grid of Pevek without thermal energy consumption on shore, is about 76 MW, being about 44 MW in the maximum thermal power supply mode. The FNPP generated 194 million kWh according to the results of 2023. The population of Pevek is just a little more than 4 thousand, while the FNPP has a potential for supplying electricity to a city with a population of up to 100 thousand people. After the FNPP commissioning two goals were achieved. These include first of all the replacement of the retiring capacities of the Bilibino NPP, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya TPP, which has already been operating for more than 70 years. Secondly, energy is supplied to the main mining companies in western Chukotka in the Chaun-Bilibino energy hub a large ore and metal cluster, including gold mining companies and projects related to the development of the Baimsk ore zone. In September 2023, a 110 kilovolt power transmission line with a length of 490 kilometers was put into operation, connecting the towns of Pevek and Bilibino. The line increased the reliability of energy supply from the FNPP to both Bilibino consumers and mining companies, the largest of which is the Baimsky GOK. The comprehensive development of the Russian Arctic is a national strategic priority. To increase the NSR traffic is of paramount importance for accomplishment of the tasks set in the field of cargo shipping. This logistics corridor is being developed due regular freight voyages, construction of new nuclear-powered icebreakers and modernization of the relevant infrastructure. Rosatom companies are actively involved in this work. Rosatom Fuel Company TVEL (Rosatom Fuel Division) includes companies fabricating nuclear fuel, converting and enriching uranium, manufacturing gas centrifuges, conducting researches and producing designs. As the only nuclear fuel supplier to Russian NPPs, TVEL supplies fuel for a total of 75 power reactors in 15 countries, for research reactors in nine countries, as well as for propulsion reactors of the Russian nuclear fleet. Every sixth power reactor in the world runs on TVEL fuel. Rosatom Fuel Division is the world’s largest producer of enriched uranium and the leader on the global stable isotope market. The Fuel Division is actively developing new businesses in chemistry, metallurgy, energy storage technologies, 3D printing, digital products, and decommissioning of nuclear facilities. TVEL also includes Rosatom integrators for additive technologies and electricity storage systems. Rosenergoatom, Joint-Stock Company is part of Rosatom Electric Power Division and one of the largest companies in the industry acting as an operator of nuclear power plants. It includes, as its branches, 11 operating NPPs, including the FNPP, the Scientific and Technical Center for Emergency Operations at NPPs, Design and Engineering as well as Technological companies. In total, 37 power units with a total installed capacity of over 29.5 GW are in operation at 11 nuclear power plants in Russia. Machinery Manufacturing Plant, Joint-Stock Company (MSZ JSC, Elektrostal) is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of fuel for nuclear power plants. The company produces fuel assemblies for VVER-440, VVER-1000, RBMK-1000, BN-600,800, VK-50, EGP-6; powders and fuel pellets intended for supply to foreign customers. It also produces nuclear fuel for research reactors. The plant belongs to the TVEL Fuel Company of Rosatom.
