eBay finds: Lance Armstrong replica Trek 5500 OCLV

Emulate the 1999 US Postal squad with this £4,995 retro build

We've been scouring the web for retro bike deals and found this Trek 5500 OCLV US Postal replica bike for sale on eBay.

The bike, dating to 1999, was raced by the US Postal Service team during the 1999 Tour de France, and saw Lance Armstrong take the overall 'win' after the squad ran "the most sophisticated, professionalized and successful doping program that sport has ever seen", in the words of the United States Anti-Doping Agency.

The title was stripped following the conclusion of the investigation into the team's practises in 2012, and numerous other members of the team got bans to go with Armstrong's lifetime ban.

The bike, which will set you back £4,995 ($6,128) and comes with free postage to any destination around the world, is a full replica of the ones US Postal rode that year and has been built up from scratch.

Armstrong a 'doper, dealer and liar' says US federal government USADA bans Armstrong for life, disqualifies all results since 1998 eBay Finds: Late 2000s Cannondale SystemSix frameset eBay Finds: Bianchi Mega Pro Mercatone Uno

The 52cm traditional geometry frame, which is decked out in the US Postal paint scheme, is full carbon, as are the forks. Shimano 's Dura-Ace 7700 9-speed groupset (53-39 at the front and likely 12-27 at the back) is also of the time period.

The wheels , laid out in a curious 14-spoke front and 16-spoke rear setup, are Rolf Vector Pros with tubular tyres. Finishing touches include Cinelli 101 stem and handlebars.

Armstrong had won the 1999 Tour with the bike in a dominant fashion, taking the victory at all three time trials at the race along the way, to beat Alex Zülle by 7:37 in Paris. He also dominated the first mountain stage at Sestrières, a feat so curious for a supposed non-climber that there was laughter in the press room.

The next day, on the road to Alpe d'Huez, Armstrong famously intimidated Christophe Bassons after the French rider had written newspaper columns about the race's high speeds and how the American had shocked the peloton with his performances.

The Frenchman left the race a day later after being shunned by the rest of the peloton, including his own team, as well as race director Jean-Marie Leblanc.

Armstrong failed four tests for corticosteroids during the race, though was let off by the UCI after producing a backdated therapeutic use exemption certificate. Several of his frozen urine samples were retested in 2005 and found positive for EPO, though an independent report later cleared Armstrong due to improper handling of samples at the laboratory in question.

Armstrong's Tour 'win' was rescinded in 2012, along with six others, but the bike still remains. The 5500 OCLV looks to be in mint condition, and a top purchase for anyone looking to invest in a piece of cycling's dubious history.

Pez-Test: TREK 5900

' src=

I was giggling like a school-girl… I’d just received the call from Dizzy Cycles – my local wrench-meisters and shop ‘o choice, advising me that it had arrived. The Trek 5900 that is. The same bike* that Trek provides to Lance and the US Postal boys! I giggled some more.

One of the best things about being a roadie is the level of refinement to which we can become accustomed. As geometries, technical and weight advantages become more standardized, it’s the details that start to make a bigger difference to satisfaction of ownership. The Trek 5900, 2003 model, delivers everything a refined roadie expects, but also a lot more.

Aesthetcially, the standout feature on this baby has got to be the frame – it’s a thing ‘o beauty. Sure it’s light, lightest in the world according to Trek, and with a full bike weight under 16 pounds (size: 54cm), who’s to argue? But the finish on the joints, the curves, the depth of that paint – makes ya say “ooooh baby”! Every joint is seamless, the smooth finish begs for a coat of wax lest it become dirty, and like a fine single malt, you must first behold the beauty, savour it, appreciate the hours of craftsmanship that created it. There’ll be lot’s of time for riding later.

Of course you’d expect this in a bike that is topline, and at around $4700US, this bike definitely hangs with some elite company.

OCLV FOR BEGINNERS I talked with John Riley from Trek, who gave me the insider info on Trek’s patented OCLV technology. “Optimal Compaction Low Void” – it’s how they combine carbon fibers and aluminum lugs to create a frame that is light, stiff, but subtle to ride. Quick production lesson for all you non-poindexters – carbon fiber is… just that, a bunch of fibers made from carbon, that get wrapped around/ into/ onto a frame mould. The whole batch gets glued together, kind of like working with papier-mache. Because you’re weaving many layers together to create a shape, there are inherently some air pockets, or VOIDS that exist betweem the layers of fibers. The pockets are weak points in the structure. OCLV is Trek’s way of squishing out the air-pockets to reduce the VOIDS, and make the frame stronger and stiffer. The head tube, down tube, top tube, and seat post all become one piece of seamlessly finished carbon art.

The OCLV technology is about 9 years old, now but Trek is not about to rest on their laurels. The bike is constantly being refined, with actual input from US Postal and Lance himself. In fact, Trek has two guys whose full-time job is to travel with US Postal as technical liasons – how’d you like that job!

Most importantly, it passed my own personal litmus test (you know you’ve all got one…) – does this product make me faster, or at least “feel” faster? The Trek scored full marks all around. Now, this was largely because I actually was going faster, but even rolling around my block I couldn’t wait to get ‘er on the open road – bring on the Spring winds, bring on the climbs – nothing can stop me now! But more on that in the next few weeks as we road test this bad boy to give you the full ride story.

So if you’re a serious racer looking for every weight advantage you can find, or someone with a fat wallet and an appreciation for rolling art, this bike is for you. Stay tuned for our full-on road test!

*NOTE: The bike we tested is the standard issue Trek 5900, and not exactly the same in all aspects as the Team issue bike ridden by US Postal. Some parts and components may vary as dictated by team sponsorshiop and rider preferences.

Trek 5200 US Postal Carbon Road Bike 2002 - Steel Vintage Bikes

Trek 5200 US Postal Carbon Road Bike 2002

Description.

Trek is one of the most influencing brands of the last decades. Starting as a little company with 5 employees, the company from Waterloo, Wisconsin became one of the biggest players on the market. Probably the biggest brakethrough in the company's history was the introduction of OCLV carbon frames in the early 90s combined with the partnership with the U.S. Postal Service Pro Cycling Team . Trek bikes became famous worldwide and reached a tremendous rate of success.

The Trek 5200 road bike we present you here is based on the same frame USPS team rode in the 2002 season and it also sports the same team color scheme. Trek advertised this heavily with slogans like "now USPS Team can ride the same stock frame you do". As the 5200 model, it is equipped mostly with Shimano Ultegra parts, with an exception of the Dura-Ace crankset. Even some of the parts are the same spec as the team version such as the Deda Newton bars. This bike is further equipped with Mavic red anodized rims, FSA stem, Selcof seatpost or Selle Italia saddle.

This already classic US made bike is a great ride and with the team color scheme, it certainly looks sharp too. Regardless of how we think about the famous / now infamous American squad, only humans are riding bikes - bikes themselves remain innocent.

The two time trial frames are strictly team issue. This use of stock frames is unique at that level of racing. Almost all top riders have frames custom built especially for them, often by a manufacturer other than the one whose name is on the frame.

In fact, Trek claims that Lance Armstrong’s two Tour victories were the only ones ever on stock production frames. Armstrong always raced on custom frames throughout his professional career, and, on Motorola, he had custom Eddy Merckx bikes as well as custom Litespeeds painted like the Merckx team bikes. In fact, he won the world championship on one of these Litespeeds.

trek us postal racefiets

Since joining U.S. Postal, Armstrong has been riding road races on stock Trek OCLV carbon frames. For a couple of years, his time trial bikes were still made by Litespeed, but now they are carbon frames built by Trek as well.

The look of a Trek OCLV is not something that can be mimicked by a custom builder without prohibitive expense, so anyone can see that those OCLV Treks are exactly what they say they are. The OCLV technology of bonding tubes into carbon lugs built in-house at Trek does not lend itself to making custom frames, because the expense of each lug mold is so high, and the lugs cannot be flexed vary the tube angles. There is little doubt that they are indeed stock.

Trek is able to offer Armstrong the lightness, stiffness and strength he is looking for, and the stock sizes fit him and the team satisfactorily. “I’ve been riding custom bikes throughout my career and Trek is the best,” the Texan said. “I still can’t believe I ride a stock production bike.” But Trek has worked with Armstrong and other USPS riders and mechanics to develop frames lighter than what Trek initially had to offer them.

Probably the frame you will see the team using the most is dark gray with a blue front end and fork. This is the same frame sold as the model 5500 when built up with Dura-Ace or the 5200 with Ultegra. The frame is built with carbon fiber fabric that weighs 120 grams per square meter, and the entire frame weighs 2.4 pounds. It has a 1-1/8-inch headset and an OCLV carbon fork with an aluminum steering tube. The entire fork is molded under high pressure in the same way as each OCLV lug is done. (OCLV is Trek’s acronym standing for Optional Compaction Low Void – indicating the material is tightly packed and has little air trapped into the structure.)

The frame that you will see Armstrong and his climbing lieutenants Tyler Hamilton, Roberto Heras and José Luis Rubiera using in the mountains is gray with a silver front end and fork, and the fork blades are straight. This frame is sold as the Trek 5900 Superlight at a cool $2,200 (or $4,500 team issue built up with Dura-Ace). Last year, Armstrong, Hamilton and Kevin Livingston used this frame in the mountains, and Trek claims that Hamilton’s was the lightest bike in the peloton. This year, Heras’s, being smaller (52cm), and coupled with parts like a Deda magnesium stem with a carbon fiber front plate, will be lighter and push right down to the UCI weight limitation.

The Superlight frame is built with a pricier carbon fabric that weighs in at 110 grams per square meter. Trek engineers claim that the Superlight is structurally just as strong as the 5500 frame, since it has the same amount of carbon in it, even though it is less dense. The frame has a claimed frame weight of 2.27 pounds, and the fork, with an aluminum steering tube, has a claimed weight of 345 grams. The headset has a 1-1/8-inch top bearing and a 1-3/8-inch bottom bearing, so the steering tube is conical. Savvy tech types will recognize this as a Klein design, and, indeed, Trek, which also owns Klein, has adopted some of Gary Klein’s ideas to make the bike lighter, yet at the same time adding stiffness with this oversized steering tube.

For the time trials, the Trek frames were built with input from aerodynamic guru John Cobb in the Texas A&M wind tunnel. Most of the team’s frames are white; while Armstrong’s latest is black. The frame passes UCI rules, yet it has a smooth shape which welded frames do not lend themselves as well to. It eliminates the seat post, a drag member, instead extending the air-foil-shaped seat tube all of the way up under the saddle. The saddle sits on a stack of shims under the rail clamp that adjust the seat height. A big bolt on top runs down into a nut bonded into the seat tube and holds the whole stack together, although Hamilton’s saddle tipped when he smacked a big bump in the prologue.

Letter to the editor

Editor’s note: VeloNews’s Lennard Zinn recently reviewed the array of wheels being used by the teams contesting the 2001 Tour de France. His article on Friday triggered at least on letter from a well-informed writer.

Dear VeloNews;

This past Friday on VeloNews’s Tour de France coverage, Lennard Zinn had a wrap up piece about carbon wheels at the Tour de France and said in part that there seemed to be no Rolf carbon wheels at the Tour this year.

Not known to him apparently is the fact that Ag2R has two Rolf 2002 Carbon wheel sets in their possession. Vincent Lavenu, the Director, requested the wheels for Wednesday’s mountain time trial — Stage 11 from Grenoble to Chamrousse. Those wheels arrived in France after the start of the Tour. These wheels weigh 470 & 640 grams front to rear and Michelin has prepared some special tubular tires for these rims/wheels and gave special dispensation to the team to allow them to use the tubulars. Normally the deal between Ag2R and Michelin requires the use of clinchers.

At 1110 grams for the set these are the lightest wheels in the TdF. For comparison, the newly introduced Carbon wheels from Shimano weigh 1540 grams for the set according to their brochure and the new Carbon wheels from Trek come in at 1290 grams for the set according to the Trek brochure. I’m told that Lavenu requested some carbon wheels from Trek but I do not know if he received any.

I have word that Robin Williams (Lances’ friend and MC at this years Lance Armstrong Foundation Banquet in Austin ) is in France to attend the mountain stages to watch Lance. Williams has a new ROARK Ti Bike with Ti SS Couplers and ROLF Carbon Wheels and it is just possible that these wheels will end up under Lance. I say this because Williams knows that there is nothing lighter available to Lance and he may just give the wheels to Lance and Lance is familiar with the ROLF Design and would NOT hesitate to ride them.

The Williams wheels have the stock DT-HuGI-ROLF Vector Pro hubs that are a lot heavier than the hubs on the wheels I sent to Lavenu at 255 grams to 215 grams. The ROLF Carbons use STOCK Dura-Ace brake pads and the brake surfaces are impregnated with a special fine abrasive material and are bead-blasted to expose the silica ceramic material after molding.

Brake performance is better than with alloy rims because a fine layer of rubber forms at the surface with first use and remains there permanently giving rubber on rubber contact. In wet condition there is no perceptible degradation of brake performance.

The spoking patter on these carbon wheels is the classic ROLF Vector Pro pattern at 14- and 16-spokes front to rear with DT New Aero spokes and this makes these wheel the lowest spoke count wheels at the TdF since Ag2R has switched to Bontrager wheels at 20- and 24-spokes front to rear. If you have trouble getting Lavenu to talk about these wheels, you might just post an observer with camera at the start gate on Wednesday morning.

Sincerely, Rolf Dietrich

Roberto Heras's climbing bike. Note the Selcof seatpost and the Mavic Ksyrium SSC SL wheels.

US Postal mechanic Jean-Marc Vandenberghe talks about working with Lance and the team

By Tim Maloney

To get the low-down on Lance Armstrong's rig, we caught up with his mechanic Jean-Marc Vandenberghe as the team were preparing the day before Milan-San Remo. Jean-Marc is from Moorslede, in the heart of the bike-mad Flanders region of Belgiium. He's married and has a 21 year old son.

Cyclingnews: Isn't Vandenberghe kind of a famous name in Belgian cycling?

Jean-Marc Vandenberghe: Not because of me! There was a Belgian pro rider who had the Yellow jersey in 1968 so that's why.

CN: This is your second year as a team wrench with the USPS squad?

JMV: Yes; before that I was 9 years with Telekom

CN: So you were the mechanic for Jan Ullrich?

JMV: Yes but not only for him; also for Erik Zabel and Bjarne Riis, in all the Tours and the classics.

CN: How would you compare Ullrich with Armstrong?

JMV: Well I would say that the biggest difference is that Lance is really more professional; all year round, even in the winter.

Sure, Ullrich is a very good rider but he doesn't seem to have the drive to focus all year 'round on his bike. Even when Lance isn't racing, he's still working to improve his bike position and technical factors twelve months a year.

CN: What about the actual way they have you set up the bike?

JMV: Not really; both teams had the best material, the best equipment but for example, Lance prepares better for the Tour De France than Ullrich. Already 5 or 6 weeks before the Tour, he is ready with what he wants; all his bikes, his time trial bikes and special wheels. I know what he wants for the Tour and we are all ready to go well before. That's the way I like to work.

CN: So there is little room for improvisation or last minute changes?

JMV: No, never! And even if Lance wants to make change before a race, he calls or sends an email and says "Look Jean-Marc, I'd like to change that, or this, what do you think?" That's great; he's always open to suggestions and you can work with him and talk about these things.

CN: Can you tell us about Lance's new race bike for 2002?

JMV: Yes, this is his Trek 5900; it has the same frame as he used in the hills last year. For Milano-San Remo which is a fast race on good roads, we chose the light bike for this race. It's almost 1kg lighter than the regular bike.

CN: Which bike will Lance use in the Classics?

JMV: Lance will ride a Trek 5500. With the cobbles and the bad roads in the classics you need more stability so he'll use that slightly heavier bike.

CN: Can you tell us about the wheels?

JMV: These are the new Bontrager (Race X-lite) wheels. Lance will use these this year in most races. Bontrager is a product from Trek and we tested these new wheels for quite a while since before the training camp and they are very good.

CN: What are these new pedals? What happened to Lance's legendary Shimano 7400 pedals?

JMV: We have to thank Shimano for the good work they did to develop these. Last year, Lance and I had a good laugh because he asked me "what can I change to make my bike lighter?" and I said, "change these old and very heavy pedals, man!" But Lance had been using these type of pedals for 15 years and said "I don't want to change now!" I asked him what if Shimano came up with a new, light product that worked the same, and they did. These are 240 grams lighter than the old (Shimano 7400) pedals. Lance has been using these since last November and by this time, almost half of the team is using the new Shimano pedal.

CN: I also notice that Lance is using the non-anatomic handlebars. Why does he prefer these?

JMV: The hook in the anatomic bars is bigger while the non-anatomic bars have a smaller turn so when the rider is in the hooks, he is a little bit higher and he prefers this.

CN: What about the other riders on the team? Are there any who have an unorthodox set-up or approach?

JMV: They are all OK in this regard. We can set up everyone at the training camps; Trek has a standard bike size and then we might change something like a saddle or a handlebar but that's normal. we don't have any extreme guys on the team in terms of bike set-up. Some guys just get on the bike and ride; they don't know their set-back or even how to measure it. But that's our job anyway; to fit the race bike and make sure the training bike and the spare bike are the same position. We have a book where for each rider we have all the technical information; his position, his equipment and there are copies in the team trucks and the service course so we always have this at hand.

CN: Jean-Marc, what would you like to see for the 2002 season at USPS?

JMV: Of course, the whole team is focused on the Tour De France so we have to be ready with the riders' condition and all of our material for the Tour. We also hope to see some good Classics performances from George Hincapie.

CN: You must like the Classics because you can stay at home sometimes when you are there.

JMV: Even that! I'm on the road 200 days a year with the riders, but I can tell you that the time goes fast and it's a very, very, very nice job. I like it !

Jean-Marc had to attend to a more important matter than blabbing with Cyclingnews as Lance Armstrong had arrived and wanted to check out his new race bike with his trusted Belgian mechanic.

As cycling enthusiasts, we appreciate the unique characteristics that make this bike stand out among its competitors. In this guide, we'll unveil some unique traits that make the Trek 1200 a top choice for riders looking for a versatile and budget-friendly option.

TABLE OF CONTENTS

‍ What Are The Unique Traits of Trek 1200?

The Trek 1200 is an iconic road bike from the renowned Trek Bicycle Corporation, a global leader in designing and manufacturing bicycles and cycling products.

Launched during the late 20th century, the Trek 1200 quickly gained popularity among amateur and professional cyclists for its lightweight construction, superior performance, and affordability.

Crafted with Trek's signature aluminum frame, the 1200 model aimed to balance daily commuting reliability and the agility needed for competitive racing.  So, let’s take a closer look at the unique traits of this very nice bike.

Advanced Technology

The Trek 1200 is a road bike incorporating advanced technology into its design. This allows for a smoother, more efficient ride, making it great for experienced riders and those new to the cycling world.

This technology elevates the biking experience, optimizing gear shifts, handling, and overall performance, making each journey effortless.

Aerodynamic Design

To provide a bike that cuts through the wind with ease, the Trek 1200 boasts an aerodynamic design. This reduces drag and increases speed, making it ideal for those seeking an efficient and enjoyable cycling experience.

Its aerodynamic design enhances speed and improves energy efficiency, allowing riders to efficiently cover more ground with less exertion and achieve their personal best times.

Quality Material and Components

The Trek 1200 has a lightweight aluminum frame and a carbon fiber fork, ensuring durability and a high-performance ride. It also includes Shimano Tiagra components for reliable and responsive shifting.

You will also notice that the Bontrager Select components provide added value and quality. Each part, from the brake pads to the gear sets, is sourced from top-tier manufacturers.

Alpha SL Aluminum Frame

One of the main reasons the Trek 1200 stands out is its Alpha SL aluminum frame. This frame is lightweight yet strong, allowing the bike to maintain a stiffness that increases power transfer and keeps the ride smooth and efficient.

The frame also offers an optimal strength-to-weight ratio. It ensures an agile handling experience without compromising stability, making it ideal for city commutes and long-distance tours.

Aggressive Geometry

The Trek 1200 features a steep headtube angle of 73°, resulting in aggressive geometry that enables riders to climb more efficiently on steeper uphill roads and descend more comfortably.

This type of geometry adds an element of excitement and helps riders unlock their full potential on varying terrains. With its unique combination of advanced technology, aerodynamic design, quality materials, and aggressive geometry, the Trek 1200 road bike is an exceptional choice for anyone looking to enhance their cycling experience.

Riding Experience With Trek 1200

The Trek 1200 is more than just a bike; it's a finely tuned machine designed for unparalleled riding experiences. Embarking on a journey with this bike promises exhilarating moments complemented by its superior design and mechanics.

We love how the Trek 1200 road bike boasts a lightweight aluminum frame that provides a comfortable yet lively ride. The frame's aggressive head tube angle and slim design, combined with a carbon fiber fork, create a smooth ride even on rough surfaces.

The saddle and handlebars are ergonomically designed to minimize discomfort during long rides. Every element, from the saddle to the handlebar positioning, is crafted with a rider's comfort in mind, making prolonged journeys less taxing and more enjoyable.

The Trek 1200 is a very nice bike if you're looking for a mix of speed and efficiency on the road. With its Shimano Tiagra components, shifting between gears is smooth and accurate, allowing you to maintain a steady pace.

The lightweight aluminum frame and stiff build mean you can easily pick up speed, even on steeper uphill roads. This bike is excellent for those who want a fast yet affordable option.

Its aerodynamic design and quality components work in harmony to deliver impressive speed. Whether racing or enjoying a casual ride, the Trek 1200 effortlessly glides on roads, making swift journeys a breeze.

The handling on the Trek 1200 road bike is noteworthy due to its very steep headtube angle and responsive brakes. The precise steering and stable front wheel enable riders to navigate tight turns and avoid obstacles easily.

The bike's reliable rim brakes make stopping efficient even on wet or slippery surfaces. With the Trek 1200, maneuvering through winding roads or bustling streets is a cinch.

Its lightweight Alpha SL Aluminum frame and precise steering mechanism ensure impeccable control and stability, making each ride safe and fluid.

What We Like Most About The Trek 1200

The Trek 1200 is a paragon of mid-range road bikes, combining functionality with style. Its lightweight aluminum frame, a trademark of Trek, offers both durability and a nimble riding experience.

Cyclists rave about its precise shifting, courtesy of the reliable componentry, ensuring a smooth transition between gears on varying terrains. Another commendable feature is its ergonomic design, emphasizing rider comfort during prolonged use – perfect for lengthy commutes or extended training sessions.

The bike's aesthetics don't fall short either; its sleek, modern design and classic Trek branding have a contemporary flair and timeless elegance. The Trek 1200 seamlessly marries performance with aesthetics, making it a favorite among many.

What We Don’t Like About The Trek 1200

While the Trek 1200 boasts many commendable features, it has shortcomings. Some riders have expressed concerns over its stock saddle, finding it somewhat uncomfortable during longer rides, necessitating an upgrade for optimal comfort.

Additionally, its aluminum frame is lightweight and agile, but it doesn't absorb shocks and road vibrations as efficiently as carbon frames, leading to a slightly harsher ride on uneven terrains.

Some critics have also pointed out the bike's limited versatility. It excels on roads, but it's not designed for off-road or gravel adventures. And since this is an older model, you must explore the used bike trade to find a model to purchase.

Maintenance Tips For Trek 1200

The Trek 1200 is an excellent bike with an aluminum frame and a carbon fiber fork. As bike enthusiasts, we know the importance of keeping our bikes in good shape.

Firstly, remember to clean your bike regularly. We recommend using a rag or, if it's particularly dirty, soap and water to remove any grime or debris. As part of this process, inspect the frame and components for any signs of wear, such as cracks or damage.

This will help prevent unwanted surprises on your rides. Tire care is essential for smooth and efficient rides. Check the tire pressure frequently and add air if needed.

This helps you ride comfortably, handle potholes better, and reduce the risk of punctures. Don't forget to inspect the tires for wear and replace them when necessary.

When it comes to the gears, the chain plays a crucial role in seamless shifting. It's important to clean and lube the chain regularly to increase its lifespan and ensure smooth gear changes. Lubrication can also protect the chain from rust and corrosion.

Adjust the brake levers and check the rim brakes for any damage. You should also inspect the brake cables for any fraying or rust, which could affect their performance. Replace them if you notice any problems or feel that your brakes aren't as responsive as they should be.

Finally, don't forget the bottom bracket and wheel hubs. These components are essential for a smooth ride, providing support and ensuring proper rotation. Check for any play or excessive movement in the bracket or hub, and address potential issues as soon as possible.

Trek 1200 In Comparison

When comparing the Trek 1200 to other Trek bikes, one of the standout features is its lightweight aluminum frame. This makes the bike more suitable for versatile riding such as tackling hills or commuting in the city.

The bike also has a very steep headtube angle which allows riders to climb steep uphill roads more comfortably and efficiently. The Trek 1200 comes with some good quality components, including:

  • Bontrager Race Carbon fork
  • Shimano Tiagra STI Dual Control brake levers
  • Bontrager Ergo handlebar
  • Aluminum stem

While some Trek road bikes have made the shift to disc brakes, the Trek 1200 still uses rim brakes. This might make the bike less appealing for riders who prioritize braking performance, but it also helps to keep the bike on a tight budget for those looking for an affordable option.

REVIEW: ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Season 5 Episodes 1-2

S eason 5 of Star Trek: Discovery promises new purpose for the characters we have come. It’s something that the crew of Discovery has started with since they jumped 938 years into their future. Following the devastation caused by the first contact with Ten-C , the journey in the future becomes even more challenging. In Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episodes 1-2 , they must accept what was lost, just as they were starting to uncover it. Unfortunately, the galaxy always has another threat looming in the distance.

As the series enters its final season, many paths are uncertain at the start of Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episodes 1-2 . Mr. Saru ( Doug Jones ) hesitates to accept the role of Federation Ambassador because it would require resigning from the USS Discovery. Despite his willingness to do so for his new love interest, he remains torn. This conflict mirrors past seasons where he struggled between staying with Discovery or pursuing other paths. With the final season underway, one hopes Saru has a clearer path. It’s disappointing to see him stuck in this cycle again, especially as he seeks confirmation from President T’Rina, without success. His current crisis mirrors the “life is short” dilemma he helped Tilly ( Mary Wiseman ) navigate just a season ago. Given his growth, witnessing his regression to familiar storylines is regrettable.

After briefly revisiting the various characters in the series, Dr. Kovich ( David Cronenberg ) kicks off the season’s main plot. The always impassive doctor assigns the USS Discovery a red directive level mission, the most classified type of mission in this time period. The mission involves recovering an item from an 800-year-old Romulan science vessel. Despite the Discovery having the closest connection to the time, Kovich gives little details. Before the Federation can arrive, two thieves, Moll and L’ak, beat them to it. The Federation attempts to apprehend the duo, into the action-packed side of Star Trek .

The sequence underscores Captain Michael Burnham ( Sonequa Martin-Green ) and the USS Discovery’s dedication to being in the action, regardless of incomplete mission details. Despite failing to apprehend the thieves, Michael enlists the help of Cleveland “Book” Booker ( David Ajala ), to locate a potential buyer for the ancient tech. While it’s nice to see the lovers reunited, it’s evident that Captain Burnham hasn’t resolved her complicated relationship with Book. Unfortunately,  Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episodes 1-2 continue offering more of the same dynamics for the duo. Throughout Episodes 1-2, it is clear that characters like Tilly have had growth off-screen. This makes it that much more frustrating to have other characters remain stagnant.

The buyer Moll and L’ak approach is a Data-like android, bearing an homage to Dr. Soong in its serial number. With Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episodes 1-2  spending so much time on themes from past seasons, seeing connections to Star Trek: The Next Generation is thrilling. Even with this revelation, Dr. Kovich remains reluctant to trust the crew of the Discovery. Their commitment to Federation ideals should grant them access to all details, especially considering the significance of the spore drive research and the unique capabilities of the Discovery. It is up to the crew to prove themselves trustworthy prompting investigation over action.

Similar to Saru’s storyline, it feels like a slow start and rehashing of past seasons, perhaps to catch up with new viewers or prompt long-time fans to reflect on their journey. However, this approach detracts from the desired focus on connections to The Next Generation. The reintroduction of the enigmatic progenitors to the canon heightens this eagerness for development. The first episodes of  Discovery’s  final season shouldn’t require this much prior exposition to engage viewers in the upcoming plot. Given the rapid action injection, the same urgency should apply to setting up the crew’s last hurrah.

In the second half of Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episodes 1-2 , Michael finds herself caught between a fellow captain’s determination to push the limits for the mission, even if it jeopardizes innocent lives . It serves as a compelling commentary on the extremes of prioritizing the needs of the many over the few and debating the ethics of Starfleet’s mission directives. This places Captain Michael Burnham in a challenging position where she must hold Captain Rayner ( Callum Keith Rennie ) accountable, despite her history of bending Starfleet’s rules to save the galaxy. Unfortunately, this new dynamic emerges as the most interesting aspect of Star Trek Episodes 1-2 .

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episodes 1-2 already feels like more of the same as it retreads into familiar themes before promising anything new. Even with the excitement of The Next Generation  connections, characters still grappling with familiar issues is tiresome. Although, there is hope as the Discovery crew begins to unravel the mysteries of the progenitors. The core tenets of exploration and understanding are still very much present. The action is well done, the characters are endearing, and the plot shows promise. However, it is hard to shake the sameness that permeates throughout.

Star Trek: Discovery Season 5 Episodes 1-2  are streaming exclusively on Paramount+ with new episodes every Thursday.
