You know you can drive the blue ridge?

Wilson Creek Shelter to Jennings Creek (for Middle Creek Campground) 17 miles AT mile 758.8

Card of the day – 10 of swords

Same card as yesterday. That’s happened a number of times out here so far. I guess I just did not get the message.

We got out around 10 and knew we had a long day. There was a promise of beer and home made burgers, oh and for once a swimming pond at a paid for campground 17 miles up the trail.

As has been the case recently there seemed to be a lot of views just past the trees that we could not quite see. You know they are there however and every now and then get a glimpse.

We hit a road and got Trail Magic from Not So Crazy’s dad. He has fruit and beer! What a magic combination. Crazy had told him about us camping together a few days before so it was nice to see him.

Eventually we got to the top and there were views for miles. Man when they come, they come, and you sure know the reason that your out here.

Unfortunately Moscow fell at one point and when we stopped to gather ourselves together I realised I’d lost a water bottle! That my friends is only going to add to my water problems of the last few days.

We hit the Blue Ridge Parkway and spent the next few miles just hiking between views from the road and heading back up along miles of ridges.

We finally came out of the woods at the road at 6.15! Perfect, the shop closes at 7 so we have 45 mins to get there. The only problem was that there was no signal at the trail head so we had to walk. After half a mile we got a hitch! They had a shiny new car so we were very thankful! We got to the campsite with 15 mins to spare.

Once we had set up camp we had a late night swim in the pond. It was surprisingly warm in there. There were some massive inflatable slides and platforms for us to jump and dive off.

After a shower we were able to just watch the fire flys as they danced around the trees.

The last two days have reminded me why I’m on trail. Maybe I’ll stay after all.

I'm Craigen, which is just Scottish for Craig. My granddad told me that if I ever do any thing important in life I should do it in a Kilt, so I can be found hiking in my Kilt. I work as a Pagan Prison Chaplain in the UK, which is different, and they have given me 6 months off to go take a walk in the woods. I'm mostly interested in History, Politics, good food and beer, F1 and Rugby! I've hiked the Camino Frances and Portuguese, The Ridge Way and most recently Wainwrights Coast to Coast. PS. I'm rather dyslexic, my SPG might not be on point, but I do try.

Review: Trek FX+ 2

Trek FX 2 electric bike on geometric yellow and green backdrop.

If you come to me and say, “I’ve never ridden an electric bike before,” I am probably going to take a few factors into consideration. The first is safety. If you’ve never built a bike, I’m probably not going to recommend a mail-order one you have to assemble yourself. You don’t want to discover that you've failed to tighten a screw when you’re going 20 miles per hour down a hill.

You also probably want a bike that’s reasonably priced, comfortable, and convenient to ride. In fact, you might want one that’s as close to your first human-powered bike as possible. Trek’s FX+ 2 hits all the sweet spots. It’s made by a reputable manufacturer with a wide retailer network. The reasonable base price includes all the commuter components, like integrated lights and fenders. Most importantly, it’s light and maneuverable.

It’s not a 65-pound “starter” ebike that will crush you if you stop on a hill or forget to charge the battery. Nor is it a smart bike that makes you spend 20 minutes walking through an app before you can ride it. I've been testing ebikes at home for years, and this is the first one my 60-year-old dad has felt comfortable grabbing and using to chase after my kids. “Sometimes I don’t even turn it on,” he remarked the other day. That’s the whole point.

Trek FX 2 electric bike

The FX+ 2 comes in two configurations and three different sizes. The default model has a regular step-over top tube, and the FX+ 2 Stagger has a step-through top tube. Both come in a variety of colors and have small, medium, and large sizes. I’m 5'2" and the small-size Stagger fits me well. However, if you’re smaller than 5 feet, you might want to look at a different bike.

The cables, battery, and motor are inside the frame. The only clue the FX+ 2 Stagger is an ebike at all is a small unit with only three buttons on it: a power button, and plus and minus symbols. When you turn on the bike, its lights turn on, and two light meters show how much battery you have left and what level of pedal assistance you have toggled on.

That’s it. There’s no bright LCD display and no throttle. This might seem like a downside, but I use my electric bike for commuting and running errands. When I lock it up on a rack, it gives me peace of mind to know that no one’s going to spot a lone ebike in the wild and immediately try to steal it (or the battery).

I also appreciate the clarity in the controls. I’ve tried other electric bikes with a one-button toggle, but I could never remember how many times to press the button to toggle the level of assist, or what light indicated how much battery I had left.

Closeup view of a cargo rack on the Trek FX 2 electric bike.

The FX+ 2 has a 250-watt Hydrive rear hub motor, which is the European standard. That might seem slightly underpowered to Americans looking to power up huge hills, but the bike is so light and maneuverable that having a smaller motor doesn’t matter much at all. The medium frame size weighs 40 pounds—almost 30 pounds lighter than my own Tern GSD S00.

Not only is it easy to scootch up hills, it’s also easy to maneuver onto crowded bike racks when I’m out, or to lift onto our hanging bike rack in my garage. Also, for the past two weeks, it’s the first bike both my dad and I have grabbed to run errands around the neighborhood. The stated range is 35 miles, but we’ve put at least 10 miles on it by now, and the battery seems largely untouched. The fast 45c road tires didn’t hurt, either.

Person riding the Trek FX 2 electric bike on a city street.

It does lack a few features we're used to seeing on higher-end ebikes by now, like a low-maintenance carbon belt drive or a continuously variable shifter. Instead, it has a regular bike chain on a nine-speed Shimano shifting system, with a derailleur that, yes, you may have to adjust occasionally.

But honestly, this was more than fine by me. I didn’t have to learn a new shifting system or figure out how to calibrate the gearing with the assist levels. I wasn’t riding a bike that was trying to predict how much assist I’d need and when—I could simply toggle on more or less as I rode. In that way, it felt much easier and more natural.

It also has a lot of accessories that may be equally important, especially as the weather here in Oregon has grown cold, gray, and wet in the past few weeks. The 120-lumen headlamp is incredibly bright. The bell is incredibly loud. The fenders have kept my jeans relatively dry, and I’ve been able to bungee items onto the rear rack. A kickstand keeps it up in the garage for quick access, and hydraulic disc brakes work even when the rain is pouring down.

The price point may seem high compared to direct-to-consumer bikes from Aventon, Lectric, or Rad Power. But once you start adding up the cost of quality components, labor, and accessories, their prices start inching up. Mail-order companies are able to offer much lower prices on base models because their motors are cheaper. With a nicer motor, a mail-order bike like the Ride1Up Prodigy is priced comparably to the FX+ 2, and you have to assemble and safety-check it yourself.

Over the years, I’ve seen bicycle manufacturers debate and then struggle to add or subtract features that will make electric bikes more attractive to people who haven’t biked before. Extremely low step-throughs! Weird shifting systems! Apps! Huge tires! Maybe the best way to get people on an electric bike is the same way you get people on a regular bike—by making it fun, light, and easy to ride.

The Joro spiders are coming – and these photos from people along the East Coast show what you can expect

By Li Cohen

Updated on: June 6, 2024 / 7:48 PM EDT / CBS News

The massive yellow-and-black-bodied critters known for parachuting through the air with their spidey strings are headed north, researchers say. And people across the East Coast are sharing images of what the Joro spider invasion looks like from their own backyards.

Joro spiders were first spotted in Georgia in 2014, but experts believe they may have arrived as early as 2010. Since then, they've rapidly spread across the South, with observations reported across more than half a dozen states. Researchers believe they are bound for the Big Apple, and that "it is a matter of when, not if" these arachnids land in New York and New Jersey — but don't worry, they're super shy and will likely freeze up for more than an hour if you disturb them, giving ample time to get away from their four-inch leg span.

Here are photos of what people are seeing across the U.S.

large.jpg

Georgia is where Joro spiders — an invasive species from Asia — were first detected in the U.S. But since their discovery, they have hopped on human transportation and used their silk to parachute through the sky and land far from this origin.

There isn't anything itsy-bitsy about this spider. Females can grow to have a leg span of up to 4 inches — nearly the size of the average woman's hand.

South Carolina

Joro spiders may be big, but their webs are even bigger. One researcher said he's seen webs as wide as six feet , while others have said their webs can be more than 10 feet wide.

original.jpg

Most of the Joro spiders people have documented appear to be females, which are bigger than adult males and more brightly colored, with vivid yellow and gray bodies with yellow bands on their long legs. They are also known to lay 400 to 500 eggs in a single sac , with spiderlings emerging around June, according to PennState Extension.

"Ballooning spiderlings can travel tens to hundreds of miles, especially if they are picked up by strong winds and storms," PennState says.

West Virginia

large-2.jpg

Joro spiders do have venom, but so far, there is no evidence showing that they are dangerous to humans or pets. Researchers say it's likely that their fangs can't even pierce the skin if given the chance, and that when disturbed, they're known to freeze for more than an hour. Researchers at Clemson University have even noted that this species is among the "shyest" of spiders.

“Something major is happening here”: Only Leonard Nimoy Knows the True Meaning Behind the Vulcan Salute Almost No Star Trek Fan is Aware of

I ntroduced in the 1967 episode Amok Time , the distinctive Vulcan salute has become deeply ingrained in Star Trek and remains iconic among fans even decades after its inception. Devised by Leonard Nimoy, who played Captain Spock in the original series, the phrase “live long and prosper” is frequently spoken alongside the iconic hand gesture.

But despite its impact on pop culture, not many might be aware of this sign’s roots, whose meaning is deeply associated with Nimoy’s experience with the Jewish culture as a kid.

The Vulcan Salute’s Rich Jewish Heritage

Following the Vulcan species’ telepathic abilities, accompanied by a deep sense of rationality, they often refrain from using traditional means of greeting to avoid physical contact with strangers. This eventually created the room for the iconic hand gesture, which is made by separating your middle finger from the ring finger while raising your hand.

After Leonard Nimoy, Patrick Stewart Nearly Had a Star-crossed Star Trek Reunion With William Shatner in The Next Generation

Leonard Nimoy , who suggested this gesture, and was later surprised by how it took the world by storm, recalled how his Jewish upbringing influenced this sign. During his childhood, Nimoy used to partake in Shekhinah, a prayer that was meant to bless the congregation. He further recalled that during the prayer, they’re told to close their eyes, as it is said that “the light from this Deity could be very damaging” for the eyes.

But while attending the prayer alongside his father, a young Nimoy peeked out of curiosity and saw the hand gesture resembling the Hebrew letter shin.

I thought, ‘something major is happening here.’ So I peeked. . And I saw them with their hands stuck out from beneath the tallit like this, I had no idea what was going on, but the sound of it and the look of it was magical.

This ended up leaving a major impression on the actor, who recalled practicing the hand gesture throughout his childhood before it eventually made its way to the Star Trek universe.

The Plot of J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Deeply Hinged on Leonard Nimoy’s Return

After a years-long absence from the Star Trek universe, Leonard Nimoy returned to play Spock in J.J. Abrams ‘ reimagining of the franchise with the 2009 release Star Trek . Reflecting on the iconic actor’s return, writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci revealed that the film’s plot highly hinged on whether the actor would be willing to step into the role again or not. Orci stressed (via Trek Movie ) that there was never a backup plan ready if the actor had passed away.

There was never a plan B for me. Maybe Paramount had a plan B, but for me and Alex, it has to be Nimoy or bust and that is why that meeting with him was so pivotal. His role had to be essential, otherwise, he wouldn’t have done it. So, to have a plan B would have been disrespectful to him, and the franchise.

While it has been almost a decade since the actor’s passing, his influence on the Star Trek franchise and pop culture as a whole continues to live long and prosper.

“It didn’t do us any good”: Star Trek Legend Leonard Nimoy Never Forgave a Movie That “Nearly Derailed” the Franchise

30 Years Ago Today, Deep Space Nine Made Star Trek 's Deadliest Threat Clear

"the jem'hadar" ended deep space nine 's second season with a shot off the proverbial bow—and brought with it the start of a grim new era for star trek ..

Image for article titled 30 Years Ago Today, Deep Space Nine Made Star Trek's Deadliest Threat Clear

There is a lot to love about Deep Space Nine before it quote unquote “Gets Good.” The show’s first two seasons are, in a lot of ways, about the things many praise DS9 's back half for dealing with: the cost of compromising Star Trek ’s utopian future on the furthest fringes of its final frontier. But even then, few things prepared its audience for the moment everything changed with the arrival of the Dominion War .

Related Content

While the opening volleys of that conflict are some of its most famous, for good reason, the actual turning point that sees DS9 begin to pivot to a war footing happened 30 years ago today with the broadcast of the season two finale, “The Jem’Hadar,” and the start of a Cold War that would soon turn hot, and present Star Trek the most radical challenge to its ideals thus far. For the most part, it’s a Trek episode like many before it. Thinking he was getting a quiet vacation to the Gamma Quadrant with his son Jake, Commander Sisko finds himself dealing with the complicated annoyance of Jake’s best friend Nog tagging along, and then Nog’s uncle Quark, hoping to get the Commander’s ear, joining uninvited, only for them all suddenly to find themselves prisoners of a strange, hostile new race they’ve never encountered before the first night they make camp.

Little in the way of resources— Deep Space Nine didn’t have a ship at this point, so our heroes just have their runabout shuttle, and what camping gear they bought with them—and facing an unknown enemy with all the power, this is the kind of episode we’ve seen many times before in Star Trek , as Sisko, Quark, and a potential new ally in a psychic alien woman named Eris who was likewise caught fleeing the titular Jem’Hadar, try and fail to either escape the clutches of their new foes or even connect and understand them diplomatically. It’s perhaps otherwise the kind of episode that ends with our heroes getting rescued, or breaking out, and proving that Starfleet’s finest and their allies, even caught unawares and without their usual resources, can work together, save the day, and make it out of harm’s way. They’re Star Trek heroes! That is what they do. But “The Jem’Hadar” is not a typical Star Trek episode in what was already not a typical Star Trek show, and while we get that in part, it’s the climactic twist that makes Deep Space Nine ’s boldest gambit crystal clear.

In the climax of the episode, after Sisko has failed to check in with the station, Kira and Odo work with the Federation to send the USS Odyssey , and another runabout to the Gamma Quadrant in search of the Commander. They meet up, Jake and Nog rescue Quark, Sisko, and Eris, and a fight breaks out between the Jem’Hadar and the Odyssey . A fight the Odyssey very quickly starts losing. This too is perhaps expected sometimes— Star Trek has plenty of firefights break out where our heroes can seemingly not land a shot, but their foes can find ways to lance through their shields, usually before some clever techno babble and problem-solving finds a way to turn the odds in Starfleet’s favor. That doesn’t happen here, and then the other shoe drops: as the Odyssey and the runabouts begin to retreat back to DS9, the Jem’Hadar ship—unharmed by what little the Odyssey could throw at it despite it being the overwhelmingly larger ship—performs a kamikaze charge directly at the cruiser, blowing itself and the Odyssey up instantly. In stunned silence, the remaining shuttles are left to hobble back home.

With one final twist—that Eris was in fact working with the Jem’Hadar, and is a representative of their shared masters in the Dominion, who do not want the Federation encroaching on their territory; she teleports away to parts unknown before she can be detained—the season ends in this uneasy space. This one fight is over , and was arguably over before it even began, but the Dominion will inevitably return... and Starfleet is clearly not ready for what it is capable of.

It is the moment everything changes on Deep Space Nine . The show had dire threats before this—the station had been boarded and occupied in a hostile coup d’etat, Sisko had already dealt with the emergence of a new guerrilla front in the Maquis, opening up old wounds with the Cardassians. But there is a weight in seeing a ship like the Odyssey not just unable to touch the Jem’Hadar, but be taken out like nothing , just to send a message that the Federation has no idea what it’s dealing with. It’s an especially potent message, because the Odyssey is not just any Federation ship, it’s a Galaxy-class cruiser , at that point the idealized apex of Starfleet shipcraft, the vision of its scientific expansionary aims. It’s not just the best of Starfleet, it’s the best of Star Trek : the Galaxy-class was the Enterprise . It was The Next Generation . And here was its successor show, having already danced with the complicated legacy of its predecessor, blowing that symbol up: what the Federation is, what Star Trek was before this, is not prepared for what is to come.

The impact was made clear when Deep Space Nine returned. We’re immediately introduced to the Defiant in “The Search,” the first Starfleet vessel we’ve seen on-screen explicitly designed for combat, a two-part premiere that shows even with Starfleet baring its teeth like this, Deep Space Nine ’s heroes are still not ready for what the Dominion represents. The next few seasons of the show represent a slow and certain splintering of the Alpha Quadrant powers as we’d come to know them over TNG and the opening seasons of DS9 , as the Dominion’s agents sowed paranoia and distrust—the seeming destruction of the Cardassian and Romulan intelligence agencies, a return to hostility between the Federation and the Klingon Empire, brewing military coups at the heart of Starfleet itself.

By the time the Dominion War turns hot at the climax of season five, Deep Space Nine has all but completed its transition into the show it is now always lauded for being. But even as it went on to those great heights, there are still few more potent images in the entire series than the Odyssey wreathed in flames as its hull splinters into pieces—a warning, and a promise that Star Trek would never be the same.

Panthers take an extra day before 2,500-mile trek to Canada, moving closer to first Cup Final trophy

As the Edmonton Oilers boarded their flight back to Alberta for Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final on Tuesday, the Florida Panthers remained in South Florida

As the Edmonton Oilers boarded their flight back to Alberta for Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final on Tuesday, the Florida Panthers remained at home.

They'll fly out of South Florida on Wednesday, which gives them an extra day's rest before a six-plus hour flight 2,543 miles to the other side of the continent.

It helps that the NHL scheduled two days between Games 2 and 3, given this is the furthest distance between two teams in a final in NHL history.

The series resumes with Game 3 in Edmonton on Thursday.

“Just the function of the length of the flight and the travel I think it’s very smart that there’s two days off,” said Panthers coach Paul Maurice. “It makes it fair, and at the end of the day that’s surely what this should be. Both teams work so hard to get here, it should be a really even playing field with no real disadvantage in the logistics of how the series is run. So, there shouldn’t be two days for one team, but only one day for the other when they come back. This is right, it’s the way it should be.”

There's plenty that the Panthers plan to do to keep themselves occupied on the way over: Sleep. Card games. Television. More sleep.

“I play poker,” said Panthers Matthew Tkachuk, who entered the league after being drafted with the sixth pick in 2016 by Canada's Calgary Flames, who play nearly 200 miles south of Edmonton.

“I don’t know if I can play poker for six hours, to be honest. I’ll probably do poker, little bit of a fake nap, walk around, back to playing poker. It is a long flight. You only do it a couple times a year, so that part is going to be a little different this series, definitely.”

When they arrive in Canada, the Panthers will have momentum on their side thanks to the stellar performance of goalie Sergei Bobrovsky and a lockdown defense.

And the odds are in their favor.

Teams that hold a 2-0 series lead in the Stanley Cup Final are 49-5 all time. The likelihood of winning it all increases to .964% for teams that go up three games to none.

The availability of Florida captain Aleksander Barkov is in jeopardy, though, after he was knocked out of Game 2 midway through the third period following a hit from Edmonton's Leon Draisaitl.

Maurice said Barkov “wasn't worse” on Tuesday but will be further assessed on Wednesday.

0 FOR POWER PLAY

Edmonton's power play, which converted at a postseason-best 37%, is 0 for 7 through two games of the final. Asked Tuesday what more needs to happen, coach Kris Knoblauch said, “Put the puck in the net.”

“We hit three goalposts,” Knoblauch said before flying home. “If those are a quarter of an inch to the inside, we’re probably talking about how our power play saved us and came through crucially. I’m not sure how much more we can do. Just sharpen up our shooting and be a little more accurate, I guess.”

The extra day gives the Oilers a chance to regroup in every facet, and they'll be on the ice in Edmonton roughly when the Panthers are flying.

“We’ll have practice day tomorrow to work on those things,” Knoblauch said. “There will be a lot of conversations with the coaching staff, management to understand what they see and anything we can improve on.”
