Didn’t decant but kept open for a couple of hours. The nose was very closed throughout. Grippy tannis and good acidity. Fruit is there but a little nondescript. It wasn’t interesting or compelling for me but OK for Monday night. Will see how it goes over a few more years. Reasonable quality for the price and good food wine.

Closed nose but vibrant cassis and dark fruit with slightly musky and dusty mid palate. Finish is a bit short.

Decanted two hours. This has really transformed itself into something really good now. Earthy, musty, barnyard Bordeaux that I’m really liking now. I didn’t really think much of this until now and now I’d like to buy more and I will. Medium weight but lots of Bordeaux character now.

Shows the Pessac characteristics nicely. Best after a few hours. I liked this but won’t be buying more, I prefer Carbonnieux in this price bracket

The 2010 Vintage

After a cold winter in 2010, bud burst was later than usual in the vineyards. Rain in June affected the flowering. Thanks to this natural selection a green harvest was not necessary. From June 21st, summer began in earnest with beautiful sunshine, and continued thus into July; here the vines and grapes made up for lost time. The month of August was dry with cool nights, which allowed the slow and steady ripening of the grapes. The harvest took place under excellent conditions, with the grapes coming in perfect health.

Period of harvest From September 22nd to October 18th, 2010

Blending 55% Cabernet Sauvignon 40% Merlot 5% Petit Verdot

Tasting notes

The Wine Advocate by Neil Martin – 95 pts (2014/01)

«  Tasted blind at the Southwold Bordeaux 2010 tasting. This is a great La Tour Martillac that must be one of the finest releases from the estate in recent years. It has quite an elegant understated bouquet with autumn leaves infusing the black fruit profile, later tobacco and cigar box. Good vigour and class. The palate is medium-bodied with crisp acidity on the entry. It is underpinned by good structure, with plenty of red and black fruit and an engaging delineated finish brimming with energy. There is some high quality terroir and fruit here. »

Wine Spectator – 92 pts (2013/03)

« Dense, but supple along the edges, offering a packed core of cassis, blackberry and black cherry fruit. The lovely licorice, dark tobacco and violet notes glide to the finish, which shows solid, latent grip. Best from 2015 through 2025. 12,500 cases made. »

Wine Enthusiast – 93 pts (2013/05)

« This is an austere, structured wine. Its tannic framework currently dominates, giving the impression of a firm wine. It feels like classic Bordeaux, upright and dense. This makes for a wine that will need several years’ aging. »

Vanilla, plums and smoky red fruits with a touch of flowers create the nose. Silky, medium-bodied, sweet, fresh, supple and juicy, with a little touch of cocoa in the finish, this is one of the best, if not the finest vintage of La Tour-Martillac I have ever tasted. The wine is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot and 8% Petit Verdot.

1/24/2024 - trumpet60201 Likes this wine: 92 Points. Fresh nose of dark fruits, cigar box, scorched earth and floral notes. The palate is medium bodied, fresh tasting, with a good amount of fine but somewhat drying tannins. The high alcohol (14.5%) shows a bit on the back end, but they managed to mostly integrate it in the dense fruit flavors.
