Disney Insider Tips

Disney Mediterranean Cruise Guide

If you have kids and are looking for a great way to see parts of Europe with them, you should consider taking a Disney Mediterranean Cruise. Disney Cruise Line knows how to cater to families who love to travel and have great itineraries to allow you to see many different destinations on one trip!

Disney Mediterranean Cruise Guide

7 Night Mediterranean Cruise from Barcelona

Disney Cruise Line has both 5 and 7 Night Mediterranean Cruises that take you on a voyage to several countries.

In my opinion, it is one of the best ways to see many different places in a week.

Disney Cruise to Mediterranean

We’ve taken the 7-Night Mediterranean Cruise from Barcelona and have to say that it was one of my family’s most favorite vacations ever. Here are the ports of call that we were able to experience:

Barcelona Spain

Barcelona, Spain

Your trip will start (and probably end) in Barcelona so you will want to make sure that you schedule some time here before (or after your stay) so you can fully take in this amazing city.

We usually spend 2-3 days in Barcelona when we go.

Barcelona Port

The Barcelona Cruise Port is one of the largest in the Mediterranean.

You will find that there are many ships coming into the Barcelona cruise ship port at the same time.

This can make debarkation a little chaotic if you don’t know what you are doing or where to go.

Many people book a Barcelona Cruise excursion ahead of time, but if you don’t, you won’t have a hard time finding things to do on your own.

Getting to the city of Barcelona from the Cruise port is about a 15-minute walk.

Taking a taxi is the easiest way to get to Barcelona from the cruise terminals, but it can be also the most expensive way as well.

Another option to get into the city is the Port Bus.

This is a bus service that goes back and forth between the Cruise Terminals at the Adossat Quay & Columbus Monument that only works whenever cruises are arriving to Barcelona.

A one-way ticket costs about 3€.

Barcelona Spain

5 Top Things to See in Barcelona

  • La Rambla. These tree lined streets are like an open air market and pedestrian area. You can easily grab dinner, see street performers, and do a little shopping all in one stop.
  • Sagrada Familia. Probably one of the most beautiful cathedrals you will ever see. This magnificent church has been a work in progress since 1882. Designed by Antoni Gaudí, this Gothic Basilica is in the shape of a Latin cross and is filled with beautiful biblical imagery both inside & out.
  • Park Guell. Sitting high atop the city is a picturesque park designed by Antoni Gaudí. Plan for lots of walking up hill, but the view and the beautiful architecture will be well worth it!
  • Museu Picasso. This museum houses one of the most extensive collections of Picasso’s art. You will see the progression of his art from his youth, through his cubist period and beyond. If you can go on a Sunday do (it’s FREE on Sundays).
  • Columbus Monument. While not the most amazing of sites in Barcelona, Americans will find value in this statue of the man who is noted historically for his trip across the Atlantic to the Americas. The statue is located at the site where Columbus returned to Spain after his first voyage.

Naples (& Pompeii), Italy

On this cruise, you will spend a lot of time in Italy, but each port you stop at will be different.

While you will port in Naples and can spend time there, we chose to do an excursion through Disney Cruise Line that allowed us to visit both Pompeii and Sorrento.

Having visited Naples before, I have to say that my honest opinion is that the day is better spent visiting Pompeii and/or the Amalfi Coast.

Pompeii Disney Excursion

Our Disney Cruise excursion took us by bus to Pompeii where we had a guided tour then on to Sorrento where we visited a local farm where we had lunch and learned how to make Mozzarella.

tony from spain disney cruise

The excursion also allowed us our own time to explore Sorrento.

If you do choose to do Naples & Pompeii on your own, it is easily doable. It is about a 10-minute walk from the cruise port into Naples.

From there, you can see many of the major sites on your own and take the train to Pompeii or Herculaneum.

If you are visiting Pompeii with the kids, I think you should be prepared to see a lot of sexually explicit items in the market just outside of the Pompeii Archeological site. The vendors will be selling everything from calendars to posters featuring visuals of corpses in sexual poses.

Rome, Italy

Civitavechhia (Rome), Italy

When you travel to Rome on a Disney Cruise, you actually dock in Civitavecchia so you will need to find a way to get into the Rome city center.

Disney offers several cruise excursion options, and some buses and taxis will take you into Rome.

Trevi Fountain in Rome

We decided that we wanted someone to actually take us from places to place instead of relying on buses and walking so we did a semi private tour.

This was nice for us because we were able to go in with another family (so a total of 8 people) for a MUCH CHEAPER rate than any of the bigger tours (through Disney or elsewhere) were charging (I’m talking 50% less).

We had a van with a driver (who spoke good English) and were able to pretty much plan our day according to what we wanted to see.

tony from spain disney cruise

We were able to visit The Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps, Colosseum, Forum and the Vatican.

I would not have done it any other way!

If you are planning to see Rome on your own, you are going to want to make sure that you aren’t stuck standing in lines all day.

Buy whatever attraction tickets you can in advance. This can save you not only time but money!

Most of the places you visit in Rome will have an audio tour option. Typically, they are also in a separate line.

Opt out of the audio tour and use the FREE Rick Steve downloads instead. One of the best ones is for the Roman Forum.

tony from spain disney cruise

Livorno (Florence, Pisa), Italy

When visiting Livorno, you will need to choose between visiting Florence and Pisa. You can do both, but in my opinion, it is not ideal.

This is because you don’t really get enough time in Florence and you don’t get to go inside the Uffizi which I think is an important museum to see.

Duomo in Florence

On our Disney Mediterranean Cruise to Livorno, we chose to spend the day in Florence on our own. There are guided tour options, but since everything is centrally located and we didn’t want to be on someone else’s schedule, we did it alone.

We began our day trip to Florence in the heart of Florence.

This is where you will find such important sites as Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral (Duomo), Giotto’s Bell Tower, Baptistery of St. John and Museo dell’Opera del Duomo.

tony from spain disney cruise

We stopped for lunch at a local restaurant before heading on to see the local squares and the Uffizi.

From the Uffizi balcony, you get a beautiful view of the Ponte Vecchio bridge.

tony from spain disney cruise

Villefranche (Monaco & Monte Carlo / Nice), France

Located on the French Riviera, this region includes Monte Carlo, Cannes, and Nice.

We choose to go on our own cruise excursion from Villefranche to Nice, Monte Carlo and Monaco.

There are two ways to get from Villefranche to Nice: Train or Bus.

tony from spain disney cruise

Bus Trip from Villefranche to Nice

If you choose to take the bus from Villefranche to Nice, it will take about 15 minutes.

Once the tender brings you inland, walk up the hill to the bus stop. You will take Bus 100. This is a popular thing to do, so expect that you might have to wait for more than once bus. Buses run every 15 mins or so.

You purchase bus fare on the bus. Make sure you have Euros.

On the return trip, the bus is even more full and can take quite some time to make the journey back. You may want to take the train.

Train Trip from Villefranche to Nice

Just a 10 minute walk from where the tender lands, the train is the fastest way to get to Nice from Villefranche if the trains are running. Be sure to check to make sure that they are not on strike (as this is known to happen quite a bit in France).

You can purchase your ticket at the train station. It is about 2 Euro each way. You will get off at the Nice Ville station and walk the rest of the way into Old Town.

tony from spain disney cruise

Once in Nice, take the Little Train Tour which takes you to see the most important landmarks as well as gets you to Monaco to see the Prince’s Palace at the top of Castle Hill.

tony from spain disney cruise

It takes all the planning out of your trip and because of the audio guide, you will learn as you go.

Things to Know about Mediterranean Cruise Excursions

Local currency.

The currency in all ports of call on a Mediterranean cruise will be the Euro. There are 8 Euro Coins and 7 different Euro banknotes.

While you can charge everything to your room while on the ship, you will want to make sure you get plenty of Euros prior to your trip for your excursions.

tony from spain disney cruise

You can use the exchange services on the ship (as well as at most airports, ports of call ATMs, and European banks) BUT you will want to make sure you get the biggest bang for your buck.

European exchange rates vary and fluctuate. Find the best deal you can prior to your cruise and get more than you think you will need.

Also, whether you plan to withdrawal Euros from a Credit Card while in Europe or not, make sure you know your PIN code just in case.

We had no idea what our pin code was and it caused us an unneeded headache when we needed more Euros.

Be prepared to be up early. Disney Cruise Line excursions seem to get priority in leaving the ship.

In Villefranche, it can take up to one hour to leave the ship because you have to terry off the ship by small boats.

If you are doing a non-Disney or on your own excursion, plan accordingly.

We did both Disney and Non-Disney excursions on our Disney Mediterranean Cruise. I do suggest you do your homework.

Excursions will not wait for you, so be sure that you are on time!

You will pay more for Disney excursions than you will if you book private tours, but you are guaranteed that Disney won’t leave you if your excursion runs late (traffic is an issue in some ports of call).

We did both Disney and non-Disney and I’m glad we did!

tony from spain disney cruise

Language Barrier

You don’t need to speak Spanish, French or Italian.

We found that everyone we met spoke English, so it made communication very easy.

I was really hoping to use some of the Spanish I’ve mastered, but I hardly ever had the chance.

Dressing Appropriately for Rome

Dress Appropriately

If you plan on visiting houses of worship or other religious locations, you should make sure that your knees and shoulders are covered.

Wear comfortable shoes. For me, it was Skechers Go Walk Shoes. These are my go-to shoes and I swear by them. I did see others wearing them too!

The kids love their Keen Newport H2 Shoes. They are flexible, breathe and keep their toes covered.

Best part is that no one got blisters or complained about how uncomfortable their shoes were.

Packing List for a Disney Cruise

Pack Smart for Excursions

Create a Mediterranean Cruise packing list and make sure you think about things you might need when you leave the ship.

Bring a money belt or small purse that can be carried across the body.

My husband carried the money belt (you will need to carry Passports with you and this is the safest way).

Make copies of your passport to keep on the ship.

I carried a small Vera Bradley Hipster Purse that held my small incidentals like phone and sunglasses. We also had a backpack for souvenirs, hats, sunblock and such.

Italian Gelato

Be Prepared

Most of your lunches will be on your own. If you sit down in a restaurant, you will pay more than if you take it to go.

There is no tap water. If you want water, you will have to pay for it.

Bottled water is cheapest~ 1-2 euros at small convenience stores (located just about everywhere).

You’ll pay twice as much (same as a soda) in a restaurant.

They serve both sparkling and “water natural” which is regular bottled water, so know what you are ordering.

Gratuities are generally already included in your bill at sit down restaurants.

Bathrooms are not always free, clean or big. Those with small children (or bladders) will want to know where “toilets” can be found while out and about.

Keep small change with you in case they charge a fee.

Bring a stack of napkins to dry your hands because most do not have ANY paper towels for when you wash your hands.

Disney Mediterranean Cruise Guide

More about the Mediterranean ports:

  • If you plan on staying extra days in Europe prior or post cruise, be sure to get at least one converter for your electronics.
  • Trains are unpredictable. They will stop for no reason and can cause your trip to be off schedule.
  • Pickpockets will look just like you. Be wary of strangers and never ask one to take your picture. You might never see your camera again.
  • If you are handed a small card asking for money, don’t take the card. They will want it back… with some money.
  • Our go to book was Rick Steve’s Mediterranean Cruise Ports. I carried it with us to every stop we made and found it very informative!

Disney Dream Mediterranean Cruise

Disney Mediterranean Cruise Ship

  • The Mediterranean Cruise itself is just like any other cruise you would take with Disney. Same great staff, on board activities, accommodations and food.
  • Disney Characters will be dressed up in costumes based on port! Great photo opportunities.
  • There is one formal night (not all that formal, really) and a pirate night followed by fireworks.
  • They have movies in English and Spanish. Be sure to know which one you are going to (this information will be on your Disney Navigator! The theater is small, so get there early. Movies fill up fast, especially first-run movies. I’m talking, about people sitting on the stairs. Yes, it is that packed and they do not allow you to save seats.
  • Pack smart. Bring only what you need. Vary your luggage. We heard stories of airlines losing all luggage (those out of Heathrow were the worst), so make sure you have items like your camera, electronics, medications, and basic clothing in your carry-ons.
  • There are laundry rooms on the ship so you can wash your items as needed.
  • Disney Cruise Line provides shampoo, conditioner, and body wash along with body lotion in your stateroom bathrooms.
  • There will be a hairdryer in a desk drawer.
  • There are 2 FREE Disney Cruise Line postcards in the desk. Stamps can be found at post offices (and some convenience stores) at each port of call.

We had a fabulous time on our Disney Mediterranean Cruise! What questions do you have about sailing to Europe with Disney?

Disney Cruise Line Reveals New Details about it Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point

Today, Disney Cruise Line shared new details about their upcoming private destination in Eleuthera, Disney Lookout Cay at a Lighthouse Point.

Guests will first arrive at Mabrika Cove . “Mabrika” means “welcome” in Taino, the language of the Lucayans, who are considered the indigenous people of The Bahamas. While the language is no longer used, a few words remain – one of them being “Mabrika.” At this colorful arrival point, guests will immediately experience the warmth of Bahamian culture.

This next space is guaranteed to be the most festive on the island! The Goombay Cultural Center will embody the essence of “Junkanoo,” a Bahamian festival filled with joyous music and vibrant parades that will come to life in many ways across Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point. Goombay is one of the traditional music styles of The Bahamas, involving singing, dancing and drumming. The brilliantly colored cultural pavilion and its Junkanoo-inspired arch will invite guests to embrace the traditions of The Bahamas, along with the sights, sounds and spirit of the country’s signature festival.

There will be plenty of family entertainment in store at Triton’s Trumpet Stage . The gazebo’s name is inspired by one of the stunning natural wonders found among the Bahamian beaches – a large, spiraled seashell commonly called “Triton’s Trumpet.” And for you Disney fans, if Triton sounds familiar, you might recognize it as the name of the mighty king from the beloved Disney animated classic “The Little Mermaid.”

Treasures of Eleuthera will be the retail shop featuring locally made gifts and artisan crafts. The shop will spotlight Bahamian artists through an array of unique items that families will be able to bring home with them as a special keepsake.

Serenity Bay will be a relaxing retreat exclusively for adults 18 years of age and older. At Disney Lookout Cay, Serenity Bay will feature a tranquil beach experience with a dining area and private cabanas available for reservation.

tony from spain disney cruise

Disney cruises are currently scheduled to depart and disembark from three European ports: Southampton, Barcelona, and Civitavecchia. Listed below are the addresses of these cruise terminals, the closest airport and how far it is from the port, and the Disney Cruise Line hotel partners if you wish to stay pre- or post-cruise.

Barcelona, Spain

The Port of Barcelona is conveniently situated in the city center and provides a hassle-free embarkation or disembarkation point. These are the details to keep in mind:

Situated beside the Atlantic Ocean, A Coruna is a historic city whose history has maintained close links with its old fishing and commercial port. The peninsula on which the Old City stands also contains the Tower of Hercules, one of the symbols of the city, which is an interesting Romanesque collection of streets, squares and medieval churches. The Aquarium Finisterrae, the Domus and the Science Museum are some of the places that show the more modern, recreational side of the provincial capital, which offers one of its most beautiful facets in the wide beaches of Riazor and Orzán. All this is completed with cuisine recognised throughout the country, marked by the excellence of its seafood and meats coming from the inland parts of the province. The harbour has always been the scene of some of the most important historical events in the city, like the defeat of the English privateer Francis Drake in 1589 thanks to the resistance of the people of Coruña, led by the heroine María Pita. The city's most important civil buildings also deserve a visit. The City Hall is situated in the Plaza de María Pita, the nerve centre of the city. It is an elegant, monumental building built at the beginning of the 20th century, characterised by its porches and galleries and by three towers finished with attractive cupolas. Another sight not to be missed in the centre of A Coruna is the San Carlos Garden, declared a Historic-Artistic site. The walls of the fortress of San Carlos, which dates from 1843, house this unusual space in which the Archive of the Kingdom of Galicia is based and whose centre is presided over by the tomb of Sir John Moore, a British general who died in 1809 during the battle of Elvina. Surrounding the Old City is the coastal area, where A Coruña mixes the traditional and the modern. Beside the port in the Avenida de la Marina, are the typical houses with white glazed galleries (19thC), architectural elements making up one of the best known features of A Coruna and which earned it the name of 'Glass City'. The Castle of San Anton, at one end of the harbour area, was built at the end of the 16th century with a defensive character and later altered in the 18th. It currently houses the Provincial Archaeological Museum, which takes an interesting journey through Galician prehistory using various pieces of metalwork, objects and tools corresponding to the hill fort culture. On the long Coruna promenade there are other outstanding cultural opportunities. The Acuarium Finisterrae, situated near the Tower of Hercules, houses one of the largest aquariums in Spain, and includes rooms with interactive exhibitions related to the sea. Human beings are the central theme of Domus or the House of Man, located in a futuristic building designed by the architect Arata Isozaki. Inside, various interactive rooms show man from a multidisciplinary point of view. The promenade finally leads to the wide Riazor and Orzan, beaches, the main areas for the people of A Coruna to relax. The tour of the museums can be completed by visiting the Science Museum, situated in Santa Margarita Park, one of the provincial capital's most important green areas. Its outstanding feature is the Planetarium, while its permanent exhibition approaches scientific, technological and natural principles in an interactive way. The cuisine of La Coruna brings together the best of the coast and the interior. From the coast comes excellent seafood: small crabs, barnacles, spider crabs, Norway lobster, etc. Succulent recipes based on fish are also cooked, such as angler fish stew, Galician-style hake (with onion, garlic and carrot) or griddled sole. Pasties serve as a transition to the interior as they can be made either with fish and shellfish or with meat. As for meat, pork can be used to make the famous pork shoulder with parsnip tops, while Galician beef is protected with a Denomination of Origin. Any of the magnificent Galician wines that have a Denomination of Origin (Monterrei, Ribeira Sacra, Ribeiro, Rías Baixas and Valdeorras) can be used to accompany these dishes. And, for dessert, there is the famous Santiago cake (with almonds, sugar and flour). Around the provincial capital you can visit interesting places like Betanzos, declared a Historic-Artistic Site, Santiago de Compostela, capital of Galicia and World Heritage City, or Ferrol.

In the Galician province of Pontevedra, situated on the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, lies the city that lends its name to the southernmost estuary of the Rias Baixas: Vigo. Its fishing origin has left an historic quarter with a strong maritime flavour, which contrasts with the modern facilities of its marinas. This city is an excellent base from which to visit the towns and villages along the Vigo estuary and the Cies Isles that form part of the National Park of the Atlantic Islands. The cuisine of the Galician coast, based on fish and seafood, is an added incentive for visiting this region. The port of Vigo, one of the finest natural ports in the world, was the origin of this city fringed by mountains. Its maritime qualities, already exploited in Roman times, have given rise to the present-day marinas and the transatlantic harbour, as well as to the fishing and canning industries. All of this has contributed to the urban development of Vigo, which includes the traditional port area and boasts major historic buildings and wide tree-lined avenues. The historic quarter, the so-called Cidade Vella, is articulated around the old maritime quarter of O Berbés, near the port. Situated in this quarter, which has Tourist-Historical Interest status, are the arcades around the Plaza de la Constitución, fishing streets and emblazoned houses. One of the main features of this network of tiny streets, in which most façades have glass-encased miradors, is the Collegiate Church of Santa Maria, the Procathedral of Vigo-Tui. Neoclassical in style, this edifice is constructed on the remains of a Gothic church burned down by the pirate Francis Drake. Also worthy of visit in this area is the do Pedra market, a fascinating place for buying and sampling Galician oysters. The newer part of Vigo occupies a triangle formed by the Puerta del Sol, Colon and Urzaiz. Lining the wide avenues are notable buildings, one such being the García Barbon Cultural Centre, designed by Antonio Palacios. The modern sector contains one of the best miradors over the Vigo estuary, the Monte do Castro mount. Located amidst the forests and leisure areas are the remains of the hill-forts that constituted the early settlement, as well as the ruins of the 10th-century O Penso Castle, the layout of which was used for the construction of the 17th-century Tower Castle still standing. The large Municipal Park of Castrelos is located on what once was the estate of the Quińones de León country house. Amidst Neoclassical gardens and ancient trees, the Municipal Park contains an interesting collection of Roman steles, furniture and statuary, and an art gallery exhibiting European works from the Baroque period as well modern works by Galician artists. The park also boasts an open-air auditorium where key music events are held. The mounts of A Madroa and A Guía that lay around the city of Vigo provide magnificent viewpoints from which to admire the surrounding landscape. Also worthy of a visit is the Zoo, situated on Mount A Madroa, whilst the Municipal Park also contains the hermitage of Nosa Seńora da Guia. The Galician Museum of the Sea, situated at the Punta do Muińo in the parish of Alcabre, comprises buildings, gardens, a square and a wharf. The work of Aldo Rossi and César Portella, this complex houses various items related to the sea. The city of Vigo is easily accessible thanks to the motorway and airport, and there are also excellent nautical facilities and a golf course in the vicinity. At its maritime station it is possible to purchase passages to the coastal towns of Cangas and Moańa on the other side of the estuary, and even to the Cíes Isles. Part of the National Park of the Atlantic Islands, the sheer cliffs and dunes of these isles are the home of thousands of migratory birds. The route along the Vigo Estuary affords the contemplation of historic country houses such as Baiona. Its parador, an incomparable viewpoint over the Atlantic, combines elements of the past, such as the medieval fortress, with vestiges of Galician stately architecture. The restaurant serves both traditional and highly imaginative dishes made with products from the region, such as sea bass with razor-shells in turnip green sauce. The beaches of Nigrán, the oysters of Arcade and, further inland, the Mondariz Spa, are just some of the area's numerous attractions. Another attraction of the province of Pontevedra is its capital city, which is situated on the estuary of the same name. The network of streets and squares that make up its historic quarter contain major civic and religious buildings. The palace of the Counts of Maceda houses the city's parador, which provides privileged accommodation for over-night stays. Another of the major ports along the Pontevedra Estuary is Marín, famous for the Naval Military School. Other places of interest, and also boasting excellent beaches, are Combarro, Sanxenxo and Portonovo; so too, the Ons Isles, which close the estuary and form part of the Galician National Park. The Arousa Estuary leads to Villagarcia de Arousa, O Grove and the island of A Toxa, which boasts one of Galicia's most impressive spas. Visitors to Cambados can stay at its parador, housed in the former Pazo de Batán country house dating back to the 17th century. Towards the south of the province, almost on the Portuguese border, the itinerary continues with the Monte Aloia Nature Reserve, which contains highly interesting archaeological remains; the historic city of Tui, the point of entry into Spain for the Northern Road of the "ruta jacobea" pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela, where the parador is situated amidst mountains and rivers; and A Guarda at the mouth of the river Mińo, where the hill-fort of the Monte Santa Tegra is a worthwhile visit. All of these places offer the opportunity to sample the delicious cuisine that Galician tradition has preserved and that is now exploited by the most innovative chefs. The Rías Baixas provide hake, turbot and sea bass, not to mention a whole range of shellfish including goose barnacles, oysters, clams, mussels and cockles. These raw materials are served in stews and pies, on their own or combined with other flavours and textures. Veal and Galician potatoes, known as "cachelos", both have Label Guarantee status and are used in the tastiest of dishes. Wines with the Rías Baixas Label Guarantee make an excellent accompaniment to any of these dishes. Local cuisine sampling can be rounded off by a slice of Santiago cake (an almond-based sponge) and a "queimada", a traditional beverage obtained by flaming the local eau-de-vie.

Deck 14

Animator’s Palate

Animator’s Palate on the Disney Dream is a delightfully themed, Main Dining restaurant located on Deck 3, Aft that serves contemporary Pacific Rim cuisine with an American flair for dinner. Inspired by the magic of Disney animation, Animator’s Palate is a spacious yet stylised restaurant filled with everything you would expect to find inside an actual animator’s studio. Character sketches, scale models, light boxes, paint brushes, coloured pencils, computer work stations and other tools of the animation trade delightfully decorate the venue; and scenes and characters from popular Disney films adorn the walls—creating a one-of-a-kind experience sure to captivate the entire family.

Enchanted Garden

Enchanted Garden

Enchanted Garden on the Disney Dream is a large-sized, Main Dining restaurant located on Deck 2, Midship. Inspired by the picturesque gardens of Versailles, Enchanted Garden boasts a market-inspired menu of mouth-watering flavours from around the world for breakfast, lunch and dinner—and a wondrous environment that magically transforms from day to night over the course of the dining experience.

Boasting painted frescoes where rolling hills mingle with lush greenery and a magnificent blue sky overhead, Enchanted Garden invites guests to dine in a serene splendour that recalls an elegant conservatory amid the foothills in France. Adding to the idyllic atmosphere are custom-glass flower light fixtures that suspend overhead, white trellises, ornamental light posts and—at the centre of the restaurant—a delightful 7-foot tall cascading fountain, home to a fanciful stone cherub Mickey Mouse.

Dining at Enchanted Garden means you can expect something magical to happen. During the course of the day, the restaurant’s sweeping ceiling changes from a brilliant blue daytime colour into the golden red of a setting sun, finally transforming into a captivating night-time constellation of twinkling stars. Additionally, flower light fixtures “bloom” and become bathed in colour, decorative wall sconces fall away to become folding fans, wall paintings project a dusky illumination and the centrepiece fountain is flooded with shimmering light.

Royal Palace

Royal Palace

Royal Palace on the Disney Dream is a wondrously themed, Main Dining restaurant located on Deck 3, Midship. Inspired by classic Disney films like Cinderella, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, Sleeping Beauty and Beauty and the Beast, Royal Palace serves French-inspired, continental cuisine fit for a king or queen for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Dining at Royal Palace is an elegant affair. Resplendent décor includes ornate marble floors, a luxurious rose carpet and an elaborate chandelier brimming with glass slippers and roses, along with hand-painted portraits of Disney princesses and princes including Aurora, Cinderella, Snow White and Belle. A marble entryway inlaid with a royal crest featuring a pumpkin coach, glass slipper, rose and tiara, and lavish chair backs embellished with gilded emblems and tiara-topped porthole valances add to the magic.

With an attention to detail only Disney could communicate, dining at the Royal Palace places you and your family in the centre of a classic Disney fairy tale—where much of the restaurant’s décor is modelled from classic Disney films. For example, the circular floor plan, fluted columns and iron railing that grace the restaurant are all faithfully recreated from the Cinderella ballroom scene.

Adding to the refined ambience, tables are set with Frette linens, Riedel glassware, Christofle silverware, and china created exclusively for the restaurant. The adorable Remy character appears in artful ways throughout the restaurant’s design for a touch of Disney magic.

Boasting a French-inspired menu featuring superior seasonal ingredients from around the globe, dining at Remy is a leisurely affair. Disabled Facilities

Guests with disabilities have access to comfortable staterooms and suites, along with a full range of services, facilities and amenities, including auxiliary aids, on every Disney Cruise Line ship and Disney’s private island paradise, Castaway Cay.

Most guest areas aboard ship—including theatres, restaurants and shops—are accessible to all our guests. In some cases, such as when utilising tender services or in pools, guests may need to transfer from their wheelchairs to utilise the facility, and this transfer may require the assistance of a member of their party. Therefore, we recommend that guests plan to sail with someone who can physically assist them when necessary. Please also be advised that in certain situations, it may be impossible for guests using wheelchairs to transfer to the tenders due to safety concerns.

Special Access, Seating and Entrances Special viewing areas at scheduled onboard activities are set aside for guests using wheelchairs while on their vacation. Assistance with accessible seating at the Walt Disney Theatre can also be arranged by contacting a Crew Member outside the theatre entrance at least 10 minutes prior to show time. At any time during your cruise, Crew Members can answer your questions about wheelchair-accessible entrances to restaurants, lounges, common areas and restrooms.

Children with Disabilities Youth Activities are open to children ages 3-17 who are fully potty trained, able to interact comfortably within our counsellor-to-child ratio groups and with peers of their own physical size. Teen and tween activities are also available in separate areas away from younger children.

Parents may make a request with the Youth Activities team onboard to have a child with disabilities partake in modified participation for a limited time period during the cruise. Disney Cruise Line’s ability to fulfil the request will depend upon the child’s needs, the availability of counsellors, program participation and other applicable considerations. Disney Cruise Line cannot guarantee that all special requests will be accommodated.

Unfortunately, they are unable to accommodate anyone with a contagious disease or who shows symptoms of illness; children who require one-on-one care; a child or adult who wishes to participate in an age group much younger/smaller than their physical age/size; children who need the attention of a counsellor with special training; or children who need counsellor-assisted medical attention.

Special Dietary Requirements

Low-sodium meals, kosher meals and certain other special, diet-restricted meals are available. Please detail any dietary requests or allergies at the time of booking so that Disney Cruise Lines can accommodate your dining requests.

Age Restrictions

There are many places on Disney Cruise Line ships that offer adults-only activities. The Quiet Cove area, which has a pool, spa and bar, as well as the Cove Café are all off-limits to anyone under 18. The Vista Spa & Salon on the Disney Wonder, as well as the Senses Spa & Salon on the Disney Magic, the Disney Dream and the Disney Fantasy offer adult-only treatments. In addition, there are many lounges that are just for adults—along with music and themed parties. Palo and Remy offer fine dining on all cruises for adults and a champagne brunch on 4-night and longer cruises.

The dress code for dinner varies by the venue or theme night of your cruise. In general, most meals are “cruise casual”—no swimwear or tank tops. Most cruises also have special theme nights with optional opportunities to get dressed up for a special family photo.

Palo and Remy do not allow jeans, shorts, capri pants, flip flops or tennis shoes.

How I Travel: Tony Hale Loves a Disney Cruise Ship

By Kaitlin Menza

How I Travel Tony Hale Loves a Disney Cruise Ship

In Tony Hale’s Disney+ show  The Mysterious Benedict Society , the second season of which wraps up this week, a group of brilliant children set off on adventure across the globe in search of the titular mentor. Of course, as is often the case, Vancouver stands in for these fantastical landscapes, and it’s a happy place for Hale. “It's so unbelievably beautiful,” says the actor, who spent most of season one filming there amid pandemic restrictions. “It really forced me to do a deep dive. I was doing a lot of hiking, past the Capilano Bridge, or I'd walk around Gastown and Milltown.” More recently, with things opened back up, he’s found new favorite spots. “I went to these great restaurants, Fable and The Greek [by Anatoli], and there’s a whole outdoor shopping area, Granville,” he says. “It's not just the industry—it's much more a melting pot of people.”

His work has brought him around the world, but it’s actually trips to his hometown that he can’t get enough of, while his most beloved vacation of all time may have involved Mickey Mouse. Tony Hale chatted with  Condé Nast Traveler  about hotel pillows, in-flight sleep (or lack thereof), and why grocery stores in other cities are so soothing.

Why planes make for the best work environments:

I always come with a book that I never read—one or two books that never get touched. But I just produced this movie called  Sketch in Nashville , so anytime I was flying, I loved giving notes on scripts. I'm super focused on planes when it comes to scripts and notes! [Flying] feels like a constant hug, a white noise hug, almost. It fully narrows me in, and I'm much more focused on a plane than I am at home. It's like a coffee shop, where you have people around you, but they're not  with  you, so it's noise and chaos around you, but I can focus within that.

And the one thing you won’t catch him doing:

I cannot fall asleep, because I'm the person that's like, does anyone recognize that we are in the sky in a metal container? This is very odd! My body is constantly like, “Ah, I've got questions. How does this work?” My body just cannot relax. I wish I could.

His first time in first or business class:

I think it was 1999, and I was shooting a commercial for Volkswagen. They brought me out to Los Angeles to do this Mr. Roboto commercial. I had always walked by business and first class, you know? It was just, “Wow, they've got a lot of room there.” It's almost the wizard behind the curtain, and so I couldn't believe I was there. I  still  can't believe it when I'm flown business. I’m that kid who’s like, Did somebody make a mistake? Are you sure you didn't mean 25-B? I'm in awe that I get to sit there and get the warm nuts.

His priorities when planning a vacation:

Activities! If I'm going with my family, I really like to have activities planned, because if we don't have activities planned, then we'll end up just lounging around doing nothing. And if I'm going on a job and my wife can't come with me, I always bring friends with me. I'm not the guy that's like, "Yeah, I like to travel across Europe by myself." That's never been me. I always like to experience things with other people.

How he settles into strange filming locations:

I have to get my bearings: Where's the closest grocery store? Many times, I will walk around a Target or Walgreens or Whole Foods just to have something familiar and get a little grounded before I venture into new things. It settles me mentally.

His travel pet peeve:

Though I’m trying to work on my patience, it never stops being annoying when I'm hearing somebody else's conversation on their phone. Those personal calls where you realize we're hearing all about your divorce? All five rows? I don't understand voice modulation issues, not having the awareness that everybody can hear you, because when I'm on the phone, I really do try to keep it a soft tone. No one wants to hear that! But then there's a part of me that's like, damn, I wish I was the guy who just didn't even have that filter. I think I may be too neurotic. I kind of admire it, like wow, what's that like?

The places he could go a million times and never tire of them:

There's two, and they’re because I'm super nostalgic. It's Tallahassee, Florida, and Birmingham, Alabama. I grew up in Tallahassee, and then Birmingham is where I went to college, and I have a lot of great memories in both those places. The older I get, I just don't remember as much, and I love to go back because it triggers not just memories but the foundation you came from. It triggers the history. So many times, I think we disassociate ourselves, like it was so long ago—did it happen, did it not? To reconnect with that stuff, I can do it forever.

The best stamps in his passport:

That whole thing about me wanting to walk around Walgreens or going back to Tallahassee? I like the familiar. So when something is totally new, the excitement is also mixed with anxiety.  I would think the coolest stamp is probably coming up, because I'm doing a job in Rome in the spring. I will say, when  Arrested Development was brought back by Netflix , they traveled us around to Switzerland and Sweden and all these cool places. But I've always wanted to go to Rome.

The hotel amenity he cares a lot about:

A firm pillow. I'm not really snobby about hotels, but there's a popular trend with hotels that they like down pillows. You put your head down, and it immediately goes to the mattress. There's no support! So I carry around a travel pillow . I know that sounds very picky, but it really affects my sleep. I always appreciate it if they have a “firm” pillow option.

His favorite vacation of all time:

When my daughter was little, we went with friends on a Disney Cruise. I love boats. I love a cruise ship. A cruise is a floating all-you-can-eat buffet to me. She was at that age where Disney was—I mean, Disney   is  still magical—but characters were walking around, and it was so heavenly for her. [The kids] were taken care of, and so my wife and I had a good time. It was just a really fun week.
