Bus stops on Oxford street from Oxford Circus northbound are closed. The buses are diverted via Margaret st, cavendish square etc and rejoin Oxford street via Orchard street. There is no information on temporary bus stops on the diversion route. It’s a struggle for some people to walk from Oxford Circus to Marble Arch.

I-95 in Connecticut will be closed for days after fiery crash damages bridge, governor says

HARTFORD, Conn. — The major traffic artery linking New England with New York will be closed in Connecticut for days after a tanker fire damaged a bridge over Interstate 95, Gov. Ned Lamont said Thursday.

The tanker truck filled with gasoline burst into flames in a three-vehicle crash Thursday on I-95 in southwest Connecticut, closing the East Coast’s main north-south highway and causing major traffic jams. While Lamont said there were no serious injuries in the 5:30 a.m. accident in Norwalk, the crash caused damage to the bridge above it.

“The heat from the burning fuel compromised some of the bridge, so that bridge is going to have to come down and that demolition is going to start first thing tomorrow morning,” Lamont said at a briefing Thursday evening in Hartford.

He said the hope is to reopen the interstate by Monday morning.

Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling said his city’s schools will be closed on Friday. It’s unclear whether they’ll reopen Monday. He urged local employers to consider allowing employees to work from home on Friday, if possible, or use the MetroNorth commuter rail. Additional trains are being added to the rail line, officials said.

While the bridge was less than 10 years old, “the damage was pretty severe due to the amount of gasoline that was in the tanker ignited directly underneath the bridge structure,” Connecticut Department of Transportation Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto said. “The steel did begin to overheat and warp.”

The tanker had been carrying a load of about 8,500 gallons (about 32,000 liters) when it crashed beneath the Fairfield Avenue bridge, officials said. The overpass did not appear in danger of collapsing, said Scott Hill, chief engineer for the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

travel news in london today

Eucalitto said it’s unsafe to allow any traffic to pass underneath the bridge in either direction, so the entire bridge, which has beams that cross both spans of highway, has to be removed.

Large equipment was being brought to Connecticut Thursday evening to complete the demolition, which is expected to begin around 3 a.m. on Friday. Lamont said the work could take 24 hours or longer to complete. After that, the roadway may need to be repaved before it can reopen.

It will likely take about a year to replace the bridge, a major artery for the city of more than 91,000 people. Lamont said he is hoping to receive federal reimbursement to cover the cost.

“I’m glad everyone is OK,” Lisa Brinton, who lives south of I-95, told Hearst Connecticut Media. “My concern is the after effect. Norwalk is divided in half by 95 and I drive over Fairfield Avenue bridge everyday.”

The cause of the crash remains under police investigation and no charges have been filed.

About 160,000 vehicles travel that portion of I-95 in both directions daily, Eucalitto said.

Traffic was backed up for dozens of miles during the morning rush hour, and lengthy delays remained in the area into Thursday evening and were expected through the weekend. Slow-moving detours were set up, taking traffic off the highway and around the accident scene. The crash left other highways and secondary roads in gridlock. The major alternate route in the area, the Merritt Parkway, cannot be used by trucks because the underpasses on that highway are too low.

Text alerts were sent to residents of Connecticut, New York and New Jersey, and trucking companies who use the section of I-95 were notified to find alternative routes and means of travel, he said. U.S. Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg also was notified.

“I know what an incredible inconvenience this is for people and all I can ask you to do is stay away from that area as best you can,” Lamont said during an earlier briefing in Hartford. “The traffic jams are horrendous.”

Crews offloaded about 4,000 gallons (about 15,142 liters) of gasoline that was unburnt and remained on the tanker. Utility crews were also working to replace downed wires.

Environmental crews worked to clean up gasoline and firefighting foam. The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection said the runoff was contained to a retention pond and did not make it into the Norwalk River or the city’s harbor.

The accident was reminiscent of  last year’s  deadly accident in Philadelphia along I-95 when a tractor-trailer carrying gasoline lost control and caught fire, destroying a section of the highway.

The crash also came just over a year after a similar wreck on I-95 in Connecticut that forced the closure of the highway.

In April 2023, another fuel truck caught fire after colliding with a stopped car on the Gold Star Memorial Bridge between New London and Groton. The fuel truck driver was killed. The crash shut down the southbound side of the bridge for hours, while the northbound side was closed briefly.  The driver of the car  was recently charged with negligent homicide.

More than 10,000 London black-cab drivers launch £250m Uber lawsuit

Individuals could win £25,000 or more if they are successful in claim Uber broke taxi booking rules

More than 10,500 of London’s black-cab drivers have launched a £250m legal case against Uber, accusing it of breaking the capital’s taxi booking rules and deliberately misleading authorities to secure a licence.

The case, which has been filed in the high court in London by the litigation management firm RGL, resurrects a claim first raised five years ago, related to the way the ride-hailing app operated in London between 2012 and 2018.

Cabbies allege that Uber allowed drivers to take bookings directly from customers rather than through a centralised system such as those used by minicab services, in a direct breach of private hire rules.

They allege Uber was aware of the rules and deliberately misled Transport for London (TfL) about its booking model in order to obtain an operating licence and take business from black-cab drivers.

Uber has denied the allegations and says the claim is unfounded.

The drivers, who are being advised by the law firm Mishcon de Reya, argue in their suit that they faced unfair competition, and lost out on customers and income, as a result.

Garry White, a black-cab driver of 36 years, said: “This claim seeks justice and fair compensation on behalf of cab drivers across London. Uber seems to believe it is above the law and cabbies across London have suffered loss of earnings because of it. It is time they were held to account.”

RGL said that if the cabbies were successful in their claim they could secure more than £250m, with individuals potentially winning £25,000 or more.

An Uber spokesperson said: “These old claims are completely unfounded. Uber operates lawfully in London, is fully licensed by TfL , and is proud to serve millions of passengers and drivers across the capital.”

It marks the latest bout of legal trouble for Uber. In March, the San Francisco-based company reached an A$272m settlement (£142m) to compensate taxi and hire-car drivers who said they lost out when the company “aggressively” moved into the Australian market.

after newsletter promotion

That class action, which was launched five years ago, was filed on behalf of 8,000 taxi and hire-car owners and drivers, who argued that Uber X launched in Australia with the intention of hurting their business. The suit also alleged that the company used unlicensed cars with unaccredited drivers in a “conspiracy by unlawful means” and misled regulators.

Dale Forwood, a black-cab driver of 12 years, said he hoped the London case would bring justice for local cabbies. “I am delighted to see this claim being filed today and that we will finally have our day in court,” he said. “Having seen for myself the harm that Uber’s unlawful behaviour has caused to hard-working cabbies, I look forward to justice being served.”

Want to see ‘Eras Tour’ in London? This company is giving away tickets as part of a Taylor Swift-inspired job

Taylor Swift's eleventh album, "The Tortured Poets Department," dropped on April 19, and the excitement around the pop star is at an all-time high. With her record-breaking "Eras Tour" heading to Europe next month, a fan can only wonder: Will her new album be incorporated into her upcoming tour shows — and if so, how?

Well, a pair of Swiftie best friends will find out, thanks to a new Taylor Swift-inspired job that comes with a free pair "Eras Tour" tickets.

Flytographer, a vacation photography company that connects travelers with local photographers around the world, is looking to hire two people to travel to London to test out a new photo tour and take pics for their Instagram. In addition to getting a $5,000 travel stipend to fly to London, the lucky duo will also get free tickets to see a Taylor Swift's "Eras Tour" show in August.

The job title is Chief Memory Maker, and it involves testing Flytographer's new Capture Your (London) Era photo tour, an experience that brings guests to locations within Taylor Swift lore to take pictures. For example, places like West End, SoHo and Louis V on Bond Street that are mentioned in Swift's song "London Boy" are included in the tour.

In addition to a travel stipend, the pair chosen for the job will get an additional $100 to go to a salon and $100 for shopping. And the icing on the cake: They will get premium tickets to the "Eras Tour" show at Wembley Stadium on Aug. 19.

Those interested in the job can apply through the official Flytographer website until May 9, when the application window closes. Applicants will need to submit their Instagram handle, as well as their friend's Instagram handle who they plan to bring with them. The application also asks a variety of questions, including, "Why you and your BFF should be our next Chief Memory Makers," "What era are you and your bestie in and why?" and "What Taylor lyric best represents you and your bestie?"

And remember the position's most important responsibility, per the application page: "Having fun with your best friend!"

I-95 closed in Norwalk, Connecticut after tanker fire. What to know about driving around the area.

By Tony Aiello , Lori Bordonaro , Mark Prussin

Updated on: May 3, 2024 / 2:20 PM EDT / CBS New York

NORWALK, Conn. --  I-95 in Norwalk, Connecticut is closed in both directions and will not reopen for several days after a fuel truck crashed and burst into flames  under an overpass Thursday morning.

Officials called it a chain-reaction crash. Just before dawn, a car swerved in front of a truck pulling a flatbed trailer as a fuel tanker approached the Fairfield Avenue overpass  just past Exit 15 south .

"To avoid it, this tractor-trailer swerved to the right and he hit the other tractor-trailer, which ripped open the back of his gasoline tanker," said Stephen Shay, with the Norwalk Fire Department.

Work began early Friday morning to demolish the damaged overpass . Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont said crews will use shears to lift it, which could take at least 24 hours.

Watch video from Chopper 2 over the demolition early Friday morning.

State of emergency in Connecticut

Lamont has declared a state of emergency as drivers struggle to navigate detours, meaning a standstill for traffic and a slowdown for business.

"I worry about supply chain issues ... I think it will definitely impact the local merchants," Lamont said.

Local roads were a chaotic mess as thousands of drivers traveling one of the busiest interstates in the U.S. are being diverted around the accident scene.

Northbound lanes are closed to all traffic at exit 14, and southbound lanes are closed at exit 15. Travelers are advised to use I-84 as an alternate route through the state.

Metro-North has extra crews on call in case additional trains are needed.

Norwalk Public Schools are closed Friday because of potential traffic backups. All practices are canceled through the weekend, but athletic games, drama performances and proms are still allowed to take place.

Connecticut officials are urging employers to let employees work from home if possible.

I-95 overpass must be demolished

chopper-230p-0502-hi-res-still-15-04-3225.jpg

Flames spread down the highway and roasted the overpass. The fire caused significant damage to the structure and the gas, phone and cable utility lines running underneath it.

"This bridge is less than 10 years old, but the damage was pretty severe due to the amount of gasoline that was in the tanker. It ignited directly underneath the bridge structure. The seal did begin to overheat and warp," a Connecticut Department of Transportation official said at a news conference . "Unfortunately, it's not able to be safely reopened in either direction underneath that bridge."

"The bridge was damaged, the heat from the burning fuel compromised some of the bridge, so that bridge is going to have to come down," Lamont said.

Later, he said on X, "The overpass near Exit 15 on I-95 in Norwalk needs to be demolished and the road needs to be repaved. Expect this area of the highway to remain closed through at least Monday. Avoid driving in the area."

State emergency management director Bill Turner said, "Anyone that drives into that area, in that geographical footprint, will receive a wireless alert on their cell phone advising them to avoid the area."

The closed stretch of I-95 serves 160,000 vehicles per day, according to the governor's office.

"The traffic jams are horrendous"

aiello-12p-pkg-norwalk-wcbsa2tp-hi-res-still-00-00-1013.jpg

"Thank God no serious injuries, but it has resulted in the closing of I-95 North and South and that is incredible in terms of the traffic jams and what's happening there," said Lamont.

Hours after the fire was put out, the charred remnants of two trucks and a passenger vehicle sat on the shuttered highway between Exits 15 and 16.

Northbound lane closures  started at Exit 13 in Darien , according to the Connecticut Department of Transportation.

"I know what an incredible inconvenience this is for people and all I can ask you to do is stay away from that area as best you can. The traffic jams are horrendous," said Lamont.

Drivers from Bridgeport to Port Chester, New York received text alerts to avoid I-95 and trucking companies were told to use I-87 and I-84 instead, Lamont said.

"For a lot of truckers, we are on the clock. So we can only work 14 hours and drive 11 hours. So this impact, it slows down the delivery time for our loads," said Avril Jenerette, a trucker.

Drivers should expect delays on the Merritt Parkway, which trucks are not allowed on, while crews work to clear 95.

"Our highways team is working closely with Connecticut's DOT on the tanker fire that has closed I-95 in Norwalk. Please heed local authorities on detours and avoid the area if possible. Thank you to the first responders who are dealing with the fire and keeping other drivers safe," Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg posted on social media.

Thousands of gallons of fuel spilled

norwalk-truck-fire-aftermath-2.jpg

The truck was carrying 8,500 gallons of fuel and 75% either burned or spilled onto the highway, officials said.

Hazmat crews responded to the spill and had concerns about material getting into the Norwalk River, but testing revealed no impact on air or water quality.

I-95 in Connecticut will close for days after fiery crash damages bridge, governor says

Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont says the major traffic artery linking New England with New York will be closed for days around the area where a tanker fire damaged a bridge over Interstate 95

HARTFORD, Conn. -- The major traffic artery linking New England with New York will be closed in Connecticut for days after a tanker fire damaged a bridge over Interstate 95, Gov. Ned Lamont said Thursday.

The tanker truck filled with gasoline burst into flames in a three-vehicle crash Thursday on I-95 in southwest Connecticut, closing the East Coast’s main north-south highway and causing major traffic jams. Here’s Why Meghan Markle Won’t Travel to London with Prince Harry, According to a Royal Expert

It all makes sense now.

Author image: greta

Prince Harry is preparing to hop across the pond for his highly anticipated return to London in a few days. Although his wife, Meghan Markle , won’t accompany him on the trip, I’m not surprised in the slightest by the duchess’s decision to stay behind—and here’s why.

prince harry meghan markle london royal expert 1

In one week, the Duke of Sussex , 39, will travel to London to celebrate the tenth anniversary of the Invictus Games. Prince Harry will attend a service at St. Paul’s Cathedral, where he will deliver a reading.

Although I previously reported about the royal’s trip to London , several outlets recently confirmed that the Duchess of Sussex will not accompany him. She will, however, join him in Nigeria after his visit to England. This is fairly typical behavior for the royal couple, especially since the Sussex’s security demands haven’t been met.

Rachel Bowie (co-host of the Royally Obsessed podcast ) agreed with this statement, saying, “The fact that Meghan won't be joining Harry in London on May 8 doesn’t surprise me. Given the Sussexes ongoing security concerns and the lack of police protection that meets their standards in the U.K., it makes sense that she’d skip this detour and instead join Harry in Nigeria.”

Bowie also noted that the couple’s two children—Archie, 4, and Lilibet, 2—likely impacted Markle’s decision to miss the first half of the trip. “There are other reasons, too: The pair undoubtedly try to minimize time where they're both away from their kids as well,” she added.

It all makes sense now.

Suspect in London sword attack appears in court on murder charge in death of teenage boy

travel news in london today

By BRIAN MELLEY Associated Press

LONDON (AP) — A 36-year-old man accused of wielding a sword to kill a teenage boy, severely injure two police officers and wound two men in a rampage in London has appeared in court on charges of murder and attempted murder. Marcus Arduini Monzo, who has dual Spanish and Brazilian citizenship, was charged in Westminster Magistrates’ Court with murder in the death of Daniel Anjorin, a 14-year-old who was slain as he walked to school Tuesday morning in a northeast London suburb. Prosecutor David Burns says the rampage began after Monzo crashed his van and struck a man. Monzo didn’t enter a plea.

Ethnicities and religions [ edit ]

Sochi is one of the most multinational cities in Russia with people of more than 100 ethnic groups living there. Most of them are ethnic Russians (68%), the important minorities are Armenians, Ukrainians, Georgians, Greeks, Circassians, Belorussians, Tatars, and Jews.

Russian is the predominant language spoken by almost everyone in the city, including nearly all minorities, but many local placenames came from Abkhazian and Circassian languages. The most commonly used ones include "pse" / "psh" / "psta" (water), "akh" (high), and "nykh" (holy).

The major part of Sochi inhabitants are Orthodox Christians (80%). There are also Muslims (5%), Catholics and Jews. Orthodox cathedrals are represented in all the parts of the city. The only Catholic cathedral in Central Sochi was built in 1997 (most churchgoers are Catholic Armenians). There is also a mosque, albeit a very small and remote one (in Tkhagapsh community, 15 km towards the mountains from Lazarevskoe). The city authorities are planning to build a new mosque and a synagogue by 2014.

Orientation [ edit ]

Greater Sochi occupies 105 km along the Black Sea coastline. Its total area is 3,500 km² (3 times as large as Moscow ). However, most of the population is spread along the narrow coastline stripe, while the mountain area (1,900 square km) mostly belongs to Sochi National Park and partly to Caucasian Biosphere Reserve . The city alignment is from north-west to south-east, from the neighboring city of Tuapse right to the Russian border with Abkhazia .

Greater Sochi has 4 administrative districts. Central Sochi District is the core of the city and its most developed and populated part. Many of the city attractions, hotels and most shopping centers are there. During the summer season, Central Sochi is usually overcrowded and traffic-jammed. Lazarevskoye District is the largest (1744 km 2 ) and the longest (65 km coastline) one among Sochi districts, includes 34 sub-districts, most of them are spread along the sea shore. Lazarevskoe district is less urbanized that other ones in Greater Sochi. In fact it has many various settlements, often poorly connected with each other and lacking basic infrastructure. Khosta District is to the south-east from Central Sochi, this district contains some major attractions, such as Akhun mountain . While Adler District is the city's important transport hub, which includes Sochi International Airport, Adler train terminal (final point for most trains going to Greater Sochi) and the only open border crossing with Abkhazia . The role of Adler is rapidly increasing now because it will host all the Olympic venues for the 2014 Games (the Olympic coastal cluster at Imeretinskaya lowland and the mountain cluster at Krasnaya Polyana ). By 2014 the look of Imeretinskaya lowland and Krasnaya Polyana has drastically changed, as well as the local transport infrastructure.

The best developed, urbanized and monolithic part of Greater Sochi is the coastline between Dagomys (south-east of Lazarevskoe district) and Imeretinskaya lowland of Adler district.

Money [ edit ]

Like elsewhere in Russia, the Russian rouble (RUB) is the only currency officially accepted in the city. Money exchange is not a problem, but use only official counters at banks and avoid people offering you exchange at major transport hubs. By Russian legislation passport is needed for exchange operations.

Sochi has many ATMs, especially in Central Sochi and Adler. You may withdraw not only roubles, but also dollars or euro at some of them (approximately 10% of all ATMs). Take into account, that Visa and MasterCard are widespread in Russia, but American Express cards are usually not accepted even at major tourist places. Also, expect possible problems with paying by card at minor shops or restaurants and at small private hotels. Have some cash with you for such cases.

Get in [ edit ]

Sochi is among several Russian seaports, where international tourists have the opportunity of visa-free entry for up to 72 hours (applicable for cruise ships and ferry line passengers only). Check limitations and requirements carefully before use.

For other foreign visitors standard Russian visa requirements apply.

International flights [ edit ].

There are regular air connections with Vienna ( Austrian Airlines [dead link] ), Istanbul ( Turkish Airlines ), and Tel-Aviv ( Rossiya Airlines ). Also Belgrade (air serbia, 2022)

Former Soviet Union countries are also connected to Sochi:

Yerevan , Armenia ( Ural Airlines ), Minsk , Belarus ( Belavia ), Chișinău , Moldova ( Air Moldova ), Tashkent , Uzbekistan ( Rossiya ), and Dushanbe , Tajikistan ( Tajik Air ).

Domestic flights [ edit ]

Several flights per day connect Sochi with Moscow and Saint Petersburg . Other major cities of Russia, such as Kazan , Krasnodar , Krasnoyarsk , Perm , Rostov-on-the-Don , Samara , Yekaterinburg and others are also connected by air with Sochi.

Key carriers:

  • Aeroflot [dead link] - flights to Sochi from Sheremetyevo airport, Moscow
  • Nordavia [dead link] - flights from Arkhangelsk
  • S7 - flights to Sochi from Domodedovo airport, Moscow
  • Sky Express - domestic discounter, flights to Sochi from Vnukovo airport, Moscow
  • Utair - flights from Tyumen , Ufa and Surgut
  • Yakutia [dead link] - flights from Yakutsk

Airport transfer [ edit ]

By bus/marshrutka:

  • 51 - from the airport to Adler (central market)
  • 105 , 124 - from the airport to Sochi central railroad station
  • 135 - from the airport to Krasnaya Polyana

Taxi service at the airport is chaotic, taxi drivers can rarely speak English, and the declared price for a ride can be inadequate. To protect yourself, book taxi or hotel transfer in advance. The price varies greatly depending on the district you are going to.

  • Sky Express Taxi ( airport transfers only ), ☏ +7 8622 358-100 . SkyExpress discounter airline offers the airport taxi transfer as an addition to other flight services (don't expect discount prices for that).
  • Taxi Galant ( airport transfers only ), ☏ +7 918 101 0342 . Transfers from Sochi International airport to any part of Greater Sochi and back. Order in advance, at least 2 hours, or better one day prior to ride.

Russian Railway company has completed a two-way railway to Sochi airport and it is the easiest way to get to Sochi Adler from the airport. Tickets are fairly cheap and the train goes approximately every hour.

travel news in london today

By train [ edit ]

Sochi has two major rail terminals in Central Sochi and Adler. However, most trains make short stops at small transit stations of Great Sochi: Lazarevskaya, Loo, Dagomys, Matsesta and Khosta. Tickets can be purchased via Russian Railways website , at RZD counters, or via travel agencies. RZD opens ticket sales 45 days prior to ride, book in advance during the high season.

There are regular train connections with key cities of Russia, and also with major cities of Belarus and Ukraine . Round-the-year destinations include:

International:

  • Kyiv , Ukraine (30 hours)
  • Minsk and Gomel , Belarus (34-39 hours)
  • Kaliningrad (64 hours, via Vilnius , Lithuania )
  • Sukhum , Abkhazia (from Adler station, 5 hours)
  • Moscow (25-28 hours, speed trains and 15 hours route are planned to be launched by 2014 Olympics)
  • Saint Petersburg (40-49 hours)
  • Chelyabinsk (64 hours)
  • Kazan (49 hours)
  • Krasnodar (6-7 hours)
  • Krasnoyarsk (95 hours)
  • Novosibirsk (81 hours)
  • Perm (68 hours)
  • Rostov-on-the-Don (14 hours)
  • Samara (43 hours)
  • Saratov (32 hours)

During the high season (May to September) the number of trains and the diversity of destinations increase dramatically.

By car [ edit ]

The M4/E115 road connects Sochi with Moscow (1660 km) via Voronezh (1150 km), Rostov-on-the-Don (570 km) and Krasnodar (300 km).

The quality of this busy road differs from a narrow serpentine to a highway depending on its section, tending to improve during last years. Normally it takes 2 days to reach the city from Moscow and 5-9 hours from Krasnodar , depending on traffic.

Going to Sochi from Europe you can use transit roads through Ukraine or Turkey . In the last case a car can be transferred to Sochi from Trabzon by ferry. Entering Sochi via Georgia and Abkhazia is impossible because the border between these two countries is closed.

By bus [ edit ]

Sochi main bus terminal is near the main train terminal in Central Sochi. The second important terminal is in Adler.

International route destinations:

  • Chișinău , Moldova (30 hours, except Fridays and Sundays)
  • Odesa , Ukraine (27 hours, weekly by Sundays)
  • Sukhum , Abkhazia (4.5 hours, 3 times a day)

Major domestic route destinations:

  • Anapa (10 hours, daily)
  • Astrakhan (26.5 hours, daily)
  • Krasnodar (8 hours, 2 times a day)
  • Maykop (8 hours, 2 times a day)
  • Makhachkala (27 hours, daily)
  • Nalchik (17.5 hours, daily)
  • Novorossiysk (8.5 hours, daily)
  • Rostov-on-the-Don (12.5 hours, odd days)
  • Stavropol (14 hours, 2 times a day)

By boat [ edit ]

Going to Sochi by a cruise ship or by a regular ferry can be an attractive opportunity to visit Russia without a visa . Passengers are allowed to stay up to 72 hours at Russian territory if they live at the cruise ship or at the hotel, which is arranged for this particular group tourist program.

Unsurprisingly, up to now, most international tourists come to Sochi by cruise ships (please check the itinerary).

The seaport of Sochi [dead link] operates several regular international routes, mainly in the period from May to October:

  • Fast ferry from Trabzon , Turkey - 3.5 hours, May to October, 2 times a week
  • From Batumi , Georgia — 4.5 hours, daily, open only for citizens of Russia, Georgia , and CIS countries.

Ferry tickets from Sochi can be usually purchased only at the port, 1 day prior to departure.

There are also regular ship connections with neighbouring cities of Novorossiysk , Tuapse and Gagra , Abkhazia .

Get around [ edit ]

Map

By foot [ edit ]

Within Central Sochi most distances are walkable, with some regard to hilly landscape and appropriate physical efforts needed.

Other districts of the city have significant spaces between their parts, so it's better to use some transport to get, for example, from Matsesta to Kudepsta or from Loo to Lazarevskoe . To walk between districts and sub-districts of Greater Sochi is also usually not convenient due to lack of sidewalks, hilly terrain, and intensive traffic.

It may seem that the city extended along the sea coast should have long promenades. In fact, most of the coastline space behind the beach is taken by the railroad. So, the only real promenade is between Riviera Park and Dendrarium of Central Sochi. The other one is under construction in the Olympic Park of Adler.

Due to the resort specifics of Sochi, the usual approach there is to measure the distance in meters from the beach. This may play a bad joke: you can find yourself at a hotel or apartment close to the sea, but far away from any infrastructure and transportation. So, be attentive while booking.

By bus/marshrutka [ edit ]

In contrast to other Russian cities of the same size, Sochi does not have any trams or trolleybuses. The initial bus transportation system after the collapse of Soviet Union was doped with smaller private buses and marshrutka (minibuses). The last category mostly duplicates the existing bus routes with some minor, but often useful additions. The service is quite frequent and relatively cheap, that makes it the most popular way of transportation in Sochi.

The most important bus/marshrutka routes in the city are:

  • 3K - from the central bus terminal to Matsesta
  • 12 - from Bytkha to Matsesta
  • 17 - from the central bus terminal to Novaya Zarya (ring route of Central Sochi)
  • 22K - from the central bus terminal to Bytkha
  • 36 - from the seaport of Sochi to Mamayka
  • 47K - from the central bus terminal to Transportnaya street (Olymp Mall)
  • 57 - from Adler train station to Imeretinskaya Lowland and Vesyoloe (to the border with Abkhazia )
  • 64 - from Mamayka to Kudepsta via Central Sochi, Matsesta and Khosta
  • 99 - from Sochi train station to Vinogradnaya street (ring route of Central Sochi)
  • 105 - from the central bus terminal via Matsesta , Khosta and Adler sub-districts to Sochi International Airport , then to Alpika-Service part of Krasnaya Polyana . The 105K bus goes to the airport only.
  • 106 - from Sochi train station to Trout Farm via Sochi International Airport
  • 125 - from the central bus terminal to Imeretinskaya Lowland via Matsesta , Khosta and Adler
  • 130 - from Adler train station to Trout Farm
  • 135 - from Adler (market) to Krasnaya Polyana
  • 155 - from the central bus terminal to Lazarevskoe via most sub-districts of Lazarevskoe district ( Dagomys , Vardane , Loo , etc.)
  • 167 - from the central bus terminal to Adler (market / Novy Vek Mall)

Bus / marshrutka numbers from 1 to 99 mean that the fare is fixed for all the distance of the ride. Numbers from 100 have flexible fare system depending on the travel distance.

The 100-km length of Greater Sochi makes the trains one of the fastest and most suitable transports to travel between the city districts. Sochi used to have the only track along significant part of the route between Tuapse and Abkhazia , beading 5 major stations, 4 minor ones, and 28 platforms inside the metropolitan area. Preparing for the 2014 Olympics, Russian Railways (RZD) built two new lines, connecting Adler, International Airport, Imeretinskaya lowland and Krasnaya Polyana region), having a total length of 48 km, with 5 new stations.

Commuter trains of Sochi have been constantly improving, upgrading from standard Russian elektrichki to modern and comfortable ones. Most of them go from Adler (or from Sochi central terminal) to Tuapse or Goryachy Klyuch and back. One or two trains run daily to Krasnodar and Maykop . One-way ticket for a ride in an old train (elektrichka) from Sochi to Lazarevskoe has a travel time of 1 hour and 45 minutes. A ride on a new commuter train has a travel time of 50 to 70 minutes. Expect to pay 40% more if going to Lazarevskoe from Adler (travel time is 2 hours 20 minutes for a plain old train).

While summer hot season brings more interregional trains to Sochi, the number of local commuter trains is decreasing for that period. So, there are only 6 round-the-year local trains (16 in off-season period). The good news is that each long distance train will also stop at Adler, Khosta, Sochi, Loo and Lazarevskaya stations, so it is possible to travel inside the city by these trains. The bad news is that you will need a passport each time you are buying a long-distance train ticket.

By bike [ edit ]

The city bike rental service allows a bike to be taken and left at any of 30 automated terminals (pilot ones are installed in Central Sochi and Khosta districts). The service is free, but you must leave a deposit before you return the bike.

There is also work on cycle lanes allocation in the city. However, Sochi is still uncomfortable for cycling due to heavy traffic and a lot of construction sites.

By wheelchair [ edit ]

Generally, Russia has a huge gap in the level of accessibility for people with disabilities. Several cities have started their improvement programs in this area, and Sochi is among them. The accessible city is a requirement for 2014 Paralympic Games organization.

So far, at least the airport facilities and new commuter trains in Sochi are accessible. The project to create the accessibility map of Sochi has been launched in 2011, giving the start to the same all-Russian project. Hopefully, next few years will bring the significant improvement in the city's accessibility, as it happened in Khanty-Mansiysk prior to another Paralympic sport event.

Historical sights [ edit ]

  • Stalinist period Empire Style buildings . The modern-period architecture history in Sochi started from the general construction plan of 1934. During the Stalinist period (till 1953) many monumental buildings around Greater Sochi were built. Among them are: Sochi central train terminal, Sochi seaport, The Winter Theatre, Sochi Art museum, and numerous resort hotels, such as Metallurg, Lazarevskoe etc.
  • Godlik fortress , Kurskaya street, Chemitokvadzhe - Lazarevskoe district . The remains of a Byzantine triangle fortress, which was built in 4-5 centuries AD. Despite the poor condition of this site, it still has remained towers and part of limestone walls.
  • Loo temple , Loo - Lazarevskoe district . Another Byzantine site, and also in poor condition. It's at the hilltop away from the sea (1.5 km). It was built in the 10th-12th centuries, rebuilt in the 14th century and converted into a fortress in the 15th-16th centuries.

Learn [ edit ]

Russian language [ edit ].

There is no sustainable practice of learning Russian as a foreign language in Sochi. Two places can offer such classes potentially:

  • Russian University of Peoples' Friendship (RUDN), Sochi Branch ( Department of additional education ), Kuibysheva, 24 - Adler , ☏ +7 8622 40-0895 , [email protected] . This university is among leaders in Russia by number of international students. The Sochi branch is, however, a small one, so your case with Russian study will be probably solved on individual basis.
  • Sphere Travel , 11 Navaginskaya Str. - Central , ☏ +7 8622 64-6305 , [email protected] . This company several years ago offered the following programs of Russian : general, intensive, business, speaking, and academic Russian. Due to lack of students please check the actual situation before planning study.

Work [ edit ]

Getting a work permit in Russia is not usually an easy process, at least if you are not a former Soviet Union state citizen. Sochi can possibly be an exception, as the preparation of Olympic Games will create many new workplaces. Some of the potential vacancies will require international expertise. Highly qualified international candidates will have simplified visa and work permit procedure.

There are potential vacancies for English tutors, as the demand for English study in the city is constantly growing. It is also possible to find sport instructors' jobs, in both winter (skiing, snowboarding) and summer (diving, yachting, kitesurfing) sports, but knowledge of Russian is essential for those positions.

Connect [ edit ]

Mobile operators [ edit ].

Sochi has the traditional set of Russian mobile operators:

GSM 900/1800:

  • Beeline ( by Vympelcom ), ☏ +7 861 945-95-95 .
  • Megafon , ☏ +7 800 333 0500 .
  • MTS ( Mobile TeleSystems ), ☏ +7 800 333 0890 .
  • Tele2 . A multinational European provider, operating in 22 countries including Russia . Tele 2 has its network in many regions of the country, excluding Moscow . Comparing to others, it is the cheapest operator, but having the smallest coverage area.
  • Skylink . The all-Russian CDMA operator, having less subscribers, than GSM operators, but popular for faster and cheaper mobile Internet service.
  • Yota , toll-free: +7 800 700 55 00 .

Check roaming prices before using non-Russian sim-card, especially those for mobile Internet. Some standards of mobile connection are not supported in Russia , e.g. those for Japan and United States .

Staying in Russia for a week or more, it's definitely worth to buy a local sim-card, but be aware, that a passport is needed for that. The easiest way refill a local mobile account is to use an ATM for that. Most ATMs have bilingual interfaces, allowing numerous kinds of payments, including those for mobile services by local operators.

Media [ edit ]

Among dozens of Sochi newspapers, magazines and radio stations, there are no expat-oriented or internationally focused media. Everything is published in Russian only. Hotels often provide satellite TV with standard assortment of international channels (BBC, CNN, Russia Today, etc.) Following resources are recommended in addition:

  • Sochi Life TV Channel . Music channel with Russian and international playlists, mixed with views of Sochi and tourist information (in Russian only). Available within some satellite TV packages, e.g. Tricolor.

Abkhazia [ edit ].

travel news in london today

Once a flourishing sea resort and part of Soviet Georgia , this mountainous Caucasian republic passed through a bloody civil war with Georgians after the Soviet Union collapse, proclaimed its independence and was supported by Russia, but yet unrecognized by most countries. Honestly loved by many Russian tourists, Abkhazia is undeservedly mostly unknown by travellers from other parts of the world.

Abkhazia is quite small and can be quickly discovered within a weekend, but longer stay is certainly needed for deeper impressions. The monastery and the cave at New Athos , as well as Lake Ritsa , are definitely among most amazing places at the Black Sea. This breathtaking beauty mixed with Abkhazian poverty and the remains of the civil war will leave no one indifferent. Locals are very friendly, but only few of them will understand anything in English.

Sochi is the only place with Abkhazia border crossing possibility from Russian side. There is a crossing point at Vesyoloe (southern part of Adler district). It can be crossed both by foot and by car/bus (two separate bridges through the border Psou river). Coming to Abkhazia by foot, you will find a marshrutka parking right after the bridge - a cheap opportunity to reach any key destination of the country. The Abkhazian capital Sukhum is also reachable by a direct bus or commuter train ( elektrichka ) from Sochi. There is also an option to get to Gagra , Abkhazia by boat from Sochi port.

Going to Abkhazia be prepared to comply with Abkhazian visa requirements . Be also aware that, to return to Russia after a trip, you may need double-entry or multi-entry Russian visa.

Adygea [ edit ]

A fully enclaved into Krasnodar Krai small national autonomy, neighboring to Greater Sochi, Adygea has a significant tourist potential, which is underestimated. Rafting, waterfall seeing, trekking and other mountain activities in front of awesome Caucasus views make this destination very promising. It is also important that Adygea is safer than any other Caucasian region except Krasnodar Krai.

Maykop , the capital of Adygea, is accessible from Sochi by train (daily, 6 hours) and bus (1-2 daily plus transit buses, 8 hours). There is also an option to reach Adygea by car (6-8 hours via Tuapse ). An extreme alternative to that is the mountainous unpaved direct road connecting Sochi with Adygea via Caucasus ridges. Be more than careful using it.

Caucasian Biosphere Reserve [ edit ]

travel news in london today

This natural reserve has the second-largest protected area in Europe and the largest one in Caucasus mountains. It occupies the mountain ridges of Krasnodar Krai, Adygea and Karachay-Cherkessia , including part of Greater Sochi metropolitan area (Khosta district and Krasnaya Polyana), bordering Sochi National Park.

Caucasian Biosphere Reserve is the richest biodiversity treasury, having no equivalents in Russia and an international value as a piece of untouched nature with primeval habitats. Reasonably, this unique area is included into the UNESCO World Heritage List . The official site of the reserve is available in Russian only.

Two exclaved parts of the reserve, those are in Greater Sochi, are easy to visit: yew & boxtree wood at Khosta and the wild animals nursery at Krasnaya Polyana . To visit other parts of the reserve, you need to get special permit, requiring the following:

  • list of participants,
  • passport details and passport copies of each participant,
  • name of the group's leader,
  • planned route/itinerary,
  • period of stay (number of days),
  • entrance fee

In Sochi you can get the permit at the reserve's headquarter: Karl Marx street, 8, room 10, Adler district, Sochi.

Gelendzhik [ edit ]

A resort town at the Black Sea coast to the north-west from Sochi, one of the most popular domestic summer destinations of Russia. Gelendzhik has both natural and leisure attractions. Gelendzhik's aquapark is the largest in the country, and its surroundings have very beautiful scenery. The town is home to International Sea Aviation Conference , which is conducted there each two years.

Gelendzhik is a transit point for several buses going from Sochi (4-5 daily). A ride will take 5.5 hours. The Sea Flight fast ferry going from Sochi to Novorossiysk and back also makes stops at Gelendzhik.

Novorossiysk [ edit ]

This Krasnodar Krai 's 3rd largest city is the biggest Russian port at the Black Sea and the main cement industry center in Southern Russia . The majority of the city's tourist attractions are related to the II World War, when Novorossiysk was among Russian key battlefields. The most known memorials are Malaya Zemlya, Defence Line (Rubezh Oborony) and Death Valley (Dolina Smerti).

Novorossiysk's vicinities have beautiful nature of Caucasus foothills. On the top of local natural wonders is the amazing Abrau lake , the biggest one at Northern Caucasus. Just nearby the wine manufacture of Abrau-Dyurso is located, making this place the capital of Russian sparkling wine (tours to Abrau-Dyurso with wine testing are available). There are also several smaller beach resorts around the city.

There are several ways to get from Sochi to Novorossiysk. Buses go daily (8.5 hours). Sea Flight speed ferry connection operates from May to October, 3 times a week (Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays). One-way ride will take about 5 hours. It is also possible to get to Novorossiysk by train via Krasnodar .

Tuapse [ edit ]

Another important Russian port at the Black Sea and the closest neighbour town bordering Greater Sochi. This is mostly industrial and transport hub, attracting fewer number of tourists, than other Russian Black Sea coastal locations. But anyway, Tuapse is good for a single-day trip from Sochi. After a look at the downtown, the awesome surroundings should be visited. There are several very scenic cliffs around, the top of those is Kiselev's Rock , a 46-meter upright cliff breaking down into the sea. There are also quite a few ancient cultural remains, such as table-stones, around Tuapse.

Any elektrichka or long-distance train from Sochi stops in Tuapse, the frequent bus/marshrutka connection is also available. Expect 2 - 2.5 hours for one-way trip from Central Sochi.

Local election results: Labour and Tories now think Khan has won in London, amid 'wild' rumours; Cooper says party 'needs to reflect' on Gaza after council election results

The Tories suffer historic losses in the local elections, while Labour admit the party's stance on Gaza was "obviously" a factor in its failure to do even better. Meanwhile, both main parties now think Sadiq Khan has won a narrow victory in the London mayoral race, despite "wild rumours".

  • Live reporting by Katie Williams , Emily Mee , and (earlier) Andy Hayes and  Ben Bloch

The final election result for today has been declared - but there will be more to come on Saturday.

Seven mayoral contests will be announced: London, West Midlands, Greater Manchester, West Yorkshire, Liverpool City Region, South Yorkshire and Salford.

Fourteen London constituencies will also be announced, along with the London-wide top-up list that will elect another 11 assembly members.

Plus, four councils should be declared - North Tyneside, Stroud, Warrington and Epping Forest, where most of the results have already been announced.

A further eight police and crime commissioners will be revealed.

Over the course of last night and today, Labour has gained nine police and crime commissioner (PCC) posts from the Conservatives.

The party also held five posts, with another 10 to be declared over the weekend.

This means Labour holds 14 PCCs and the Conservatives 12, while Plaid Cymru has retained Dyfed-Powys.

While these elections get much less attention than those for mayors, councils and the London Assembly, they could be significant as they include many of the shires that traditionally lean towards the Conservatives.

We went into this set of local and mayoral elections with two big questions: Is Labour on course for a majority and how bad is it going to be for Rishi Sunak?

On the Sunak question, it's a very clear-cut story.

The Tories are having as bad a night as their worst nightmare.

There is a 19-point drop in the Conservative vote compared with the 2019 general election - one of its worst performances ever.

But it's not an all-out win for Labour, either.

Read more from our political editor Beth Rigby below...

The council is now under no overall control, with the Liberal Democrats, Labour and independents making gains.

The Tories had held Gloucester for 20 years.

Boundary changes in the area have helped the Liberal Democrats and meant all seats were up for election this year.

It's been a bruising day for the Conservatives as the party looks on track for its worst local election result ever.

Labour has taken control of a string of Leave-voting councils, secured victory in the mayoral election in Rishi Sunak's back yard and won the Blackpool South by-election.

Our economics and data editor Ed Conway picks out the example of Rushmoor - a typically Tory-voting council which Labour has taken control of for the first time - as an example of a significant Labour win.

"Even in the late Tony Blair period... the Labour share was always low and it's just climbed up in the last few elections," he says.

"We're seeing here unprecedented results, that's underlining the national swing."

Despite Labour's success, however, there are "other stories going on", Ed notes, with the party's vote in areas with larger Muslim areas falling, potentially as a result of its stance on Gaza.

It's a huge moment for the Lib Dems as they gain Dorset Council from the Conservatives.

The party took 13 seats from the Tories to secure an overall count of 42.

If you're just catching up, our political correspondent Serena Barker-Singh can get you up to speed in the space of a minute.

There's just a handful more council results set to be declared in what has been a bumper day of local elections.

We've had a few more through this evening - including a gain for the Lib Dems from no overall control in Tunbridge Wells.

The party won eight seats there, while the Tories lost three and Labour lost one.

The Lib Dems have also held Woking council after gaining four seats.

Elsewhere, Labour has held West Lancashire , while Elmbridge , Bristol and Cherwell remain under no overall control.

In the days running up to the elections, Number 10 was verging on the unsubtle.

Senior Downing Street figures were conceding that should Ben Houchen lose the mayoralty of the Tees Valley Combined Authority to Labour, there would be a challenge to Rishi Sunak. At that point they would be unable to stem the tide of letters sufficient to trigger a vote of no confidence.

In turn, this might have triggered an unwanted and catastrophic early election.

This is unusual behaviour - for the prime minister's closest allies to be openly speculating on his survivability - yet it is a sign of the turbulence of politics of the moment.

There was method in their madness.

Traffic restricted at Russia's Sochi airport following Ukrainian drone attack

From CNN’s Olga Voitobych and Duarte Mendonca

Flights were diverted at Sochi International Airport in Russia Sunday after a Ukrainian drone was shot down over Russia’s Krasnodar region, Sochi mayor Aleksey Kopaigorodsky said in a statement.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defence, the drone used in the attack was an aircraft-type UAV.

As a precautionary measure, the Sochi International Airport – over 200 miles from the affected region – had a temporary restriction on their flights.

“Sochi airport imposed a temporary flight restriction. Six flights were diverted to alternate airfields,” the Sochi airport said in a statement on Sunday.

The restrictions were lifted at 8.20 a.m. (local time), with the airport resuming the arrival and departure of aircraft, the mayor and Sochi airport statements both said.

“Everything is normal in Sochi. The situation in the city is calm,” Kopaigorodsky said.

Ukraine has been stepping up its attacks beyond its borders using drones to target Russian infrastructure.

Winter is coming to Ukraine, but Kyiv is adapting its tactics

Analysis by CNN's Tim Lister

Ukraine will soon face its second winter at war, and the bold campaigns of a year ago that saw significant gains in  Kharkiv  and  Kherson  seem a distant memory.

The Ukrainian military is now waging a war of intense attrition against stubborn and larger Russian forces along a front of nearly 1,000 kilometers. It is still desperately short of air power, and offensive action will be disrupted by the deteriorating weather.

The Russians are likely to launch another campaign to cripple Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, plunging its people into a dark winter. On the battlefield, the Russians have adapted. Next year’s defense budget will be 70% higher than this year’s. They are in this for the long haul.

But the Ukrainians are also adapting, after  a stuttering start to the counteroffensive .

Biden reiterates support for Ukraine as US narrowly avoids government shutdown

From CNN staff

Joe Biden leaves after attending mass at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Washington on Saturday.

US President Joe Biden has reiterated support for Ukraine as the US narrowly avoided a government shutdown on Saturday.

Biden urged Congress to pass separate funding for assistance to Ukraine in the war against Russia, after a stopgap funding measure dropped aid to the war-torn country.

“While the Speaker and the overwhelming majority of Congress have been steadfast in their support for Ukraine, there is no new funding in this agreement to continue that support. We cannot under any circumstances allow American support for Ukraine to be interrupted,” he said.

Biden also praised bipartisan efforts to keep the government open and funded through November but added that the last-minute scramble by House Republicans was a “manufactured crisis” that could have been avoided months ago.

Some context: A government shutdown was prevented after Congress passed a stopgap funding measure ahead of a critical midnight deadline in a whirlwind day on Capitol Hill.

President Joe Biden signed the bill late Saturday night.

The stopgap bill originally included funding for  Ukraine  to help Kyiv fight the full-scale invasion from Russia, but the funds were dropped after some conservatives raised objections during negotiations.

Democratic Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet briefly held up the vote on the bill after he objected over concerns about the lack of funding in it. Bipartisan members of Senate leadership released  a joint statement  committing to vote on further funding for Ukraine aid "in the coming weeks."

House Democratic leadership said in a statement that they expect McCarthy to bring  a separate Ukraine aid bill  to vote when the House returns.

Russian forces launch around 40 drones on Ukraine's central and southern regions

From CNN's Josh Pennington

Russian forces launched around 40 drones in an overnight attack on Ukraine’s central and southern regions, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) said in an operational update early Sunday.

Ukraine’s air force destroyed 30 out of 40 Shahed drones launched from the south overnight in the central Vinnytsia region and over the Odesa and Mykolaiv regions in the south, according to the AFU.

We will bring you more detail on these attacks -- the latest wave of Russian drone attacks on Ukraine -- as we get them.

Pro-Russian politician wins Slovakia’s parliamentary election

From CNN's Ivana Kottasová and Heather Chen

Robert Fico, second from left, celebrates his victory in the general elections alongside party members in Bratislava on Sunday.

The party of Slovakia’s former Prime Minister Robert Fico, an openly pro-Russian politician, has won the country’s parliamentary election , although it will need a coalition partner to govern.

Preliminary results published by Slovakia’s Statistical Office early on Sunday morning showed that with more than 99% districts counted, Fico’s SMER party has secured 23.3% of the vote.

The liberal Progressive Slovakia (PS) party came second, with 17% of the vote.

While not a landslide, SMER’s result is better than expected — last opinion polls published earlier this week showed SMER and PS neck and neck.

Hlas, a party that was formed as an offshoot of SMER following internal disputes, came third with 15% of the vote.

With seven political parties reaching the 5% threshold needed to enter the parliament, coalition negotiations will almost certainly include multiple players and could be long and messy.

Possible impact on Ukraine: Since Russia invaded Ukraine last February, Slovakia — which is part of NATO — has been one of Kyiv’s staunchest allies. The two countries share a border, Slovakia was the  first country to send  air defenses to Ukraine and it welcomed tens of thousands of refugees.

But all that could change. Fico makes no secret of his sympathies toward the Kremlin and has blamed “Ukrainian Nazis and fascists” for provoking Russia’s President Vladimir Putin into launching the invasion, repeating the  false narrative Putin  has used to justify his invasion.

Fico has called on the Slovak government to stop supplying weapons to Kyiv, and said that if he were to become prime minister, Slovakia would “not send another round of ammunition.” He is also opposed to Ukraine joining NATO.

EU foreign policy chief visits Odesa on anniversary of Russia's illegal annexations

From CNN's Radina Gigova in London

European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell visited the city of Odesa on Saturday as part of a push to express solidarity and support for Ukraine, on the one-year anniversary of the illegal annexation of four Ukrainian regions by Russia.

Speaking from inside the Transfiguration Cathedral in Odessa, Borrell said the city of Odesa should be in the news headlines for its beauty and rich history, but instead, it has been in the headlines "for the barbaric attacks by Russia."

"I've been witnessing the consequences of this war, and how Odesa and Ukraine are paying a high price for it," he said.

Borrell said the EU will continue supporting Ukraine in its fight to recover its territorial integrity and achieve a just peace.

Some background: On September 30, 2022, Vladimir Putin said Russia would annex the Ukrainian regions of Luhansk, Donetsk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. The regions together account for 100,000 square kilometers (38,600 square miles) of Ukrainian territory, a fifth of the country's land mass. It marked the largest forcible annexation of land in Europe since 1945.

The Kremlin's decision to seize the territories in violation of international law came after referendums widely panned as a sham, as people were voting both figuratively and, in some cases literally , at gunpoint.

Why Putin met a former Wagner commander

Analysis by CNN's Nathan Hodge

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s  “vertical of power”  – the way in which the entire structure of Russian political power rests on one man – has undergone profound stress testing in the wake of the Wagner mercenary group’s  aborted march  on Moscow in June.

But everything is now business as usual, and the remnants of Wagner are back in the government’s control, if Kremlin messaging is to be believed.

In a  televised meeting  Friday, Putin met with Russia’s Deputy Defense Minister Yunus-Bek Yevkurov and former Wagner commander Andrey Troshev, according to a partial transcript published by the Kremlin.

The meeting was held in a long-familiar format. Putin was seated at the head of a conference table with briefing papers and notes, making some general remarks before settling down to official business. The language was sober, competent and relatively substance-free: It could have been a routine meeting with a regional governor to discuss economic plans, at least judging by the official readout.

But unpack the language, and Putin’s Friday meeting appeared to put a reassuring gloss on the Russian government’s attempt to bring the mercenary group to heel.

Ukraine ready to become international military production hub, Zelensky says

From CNN's Radina Gigova in London

Ukraine is ready to offer special conditions to companies that are willing to develop weapons production jointly with Kyiv, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Saturday.

He made the comments as he met with representatives from defense companies from various countries, including the United States, United Kingdon, Germany, France, Turkey, Sweden and the Czech Republic.

"It will be a mutually beneficial partnership. I think this is a good time and place to create a large military hub," Zelensky said, according to his office.

"The sky shield and demining are the two biggest priorities for us today," Zelensky said, adding this includes air defense means and the production of systems for warning and surveillance. "We have to do this. This will be useful not only for Ukraine, but also for Europe and our neighbors," he said.

Ukraine is also interested in the production of long-range missiles and artillery with new capabilities. The combination of advanced technologies and military tactics will help Ukraine prevail in the war against Russia, Zelensky said.

"That is why we prioritize the development of defense production using modern technologies, production of shells, missiles, drones in Ukraine in cooperation with global leaders in the field and using our experience in their operation," Zelensky said.

"Ukraine has shown the whole world what actually works, and I think we can share this experience," he added.

Some context: CNN has previously reported on Ukraine's burgeoning home-grown weapons industry.

Kyiv has been developing its own arms in part as it allows it to strike Russia outside of Ukraine without using Western-supplied arms.
