Star Trek Minutiae: Exploring the Details of Science Fiction

Reference Tables

Updated September 8, 2023

When I first started making my starship comparison charts, I gave little thought to documenting my references. I just wanted to see the ships side-by-side! But over the years, the Star Trek Minutiae reference charts have been shared widely on social media and have even been referenced (sometimes erroneously) by official sources. To help provide the most accurate information possible, these tables provide sources for the size of the ship and credit for the artist (where known) who created the image that is used in the chart. If any ship image is used with missing or incorrect credit, please let me know !

We here are ShortList.com have an apology to make. We made a mistake, we mislead you and for that we are truly sorry.

You see, late last year we shared an exceptional poster with you all. The work of German graphic designer Dirk Loechel, it was a size comparison chart the likes of which we'd never seen. We were rightly impressed, and made the bold claim that "every sci-fi starship" was contained within its monstrous depths.

We were wrong. As word of the poster spread, more and more sci-fi aficionados came forth to point out oversights, errors and ships missing from the star-gazing canon. The poster didn't contain every sci-fi starship ever - just a great many.

We should point out that Loechel never made this claim. He's just a fan of spaceships, inspired by the work of Jeff Russell , keen to help sci-fi fans gain a context for their favourite vessels. And he's carried on his amazing work. Below we have the updated Starship Comparison Chart, bigger than ever before. It's added missing Star Trek gems, Red Dwarf essentials and a heap of others. It's not every ship ever, but it's not far off.

And no, the TARDIS isn't on there. It's too small.

Star trek: how many ships are in starfleet (in every era).

Pinning down the exact size of Starfleet in each era is difficult, but the efforts of the dedicated Star Trek fanbase have made it easier to estimate.

Star Trek is famous for having one of the largest and most detailed fleets of spaceships of any science-fiction franchise but the number of ships in the Starfleet has changed with every era. The Star Trek brand has endured for over half of a century since the first series aired in 1966. The series was originally designed as a parable for the social issues of the time, such as nuclear proliferation, civil rights, and equality of the sexes. It has since grown into a broad and multi-faceted sci-fi universe, spanning thousands of light-years and centuries of stories. From Captains Kirk and Picard to Janeway and Archer, the world of Star Trek tracks the evolution of humans as they learn to live in a world in which they are far from alone. Excitingly, 2022 is poised as  Star Trek 's biggest year ever.

Since the Star Trek franchise covers 300 years of human space travel (and even an alternate timeline of blockbuster movies), the creative teams responsible for it have put painstaking work into making sure that the canon is cohesive across each era. As such, they have made social and technological change appear smooth and natural over time. Starfleet has grown with the series, from relatively modest beginnings in Star Trek: Enterprise to an enormous presence across the cosmos in Star Trek: The Next Generation and its contemporary stories.

Related: Star Trek: What Is The Most Powerful Starfleet Ship?

Pinning down the exact size of Starfleet in each era is unfortunately elusive. However, thanks to the efforts of an incredibly dedicated fan base, much information has been extrapolated from the figures that are known. Thanks to fan-operated online encyclopedias such as the Daystrom Institute Technical Library , it is possible to make close estimates of the number of ships in Starfleet in each major era of the franchise.

2100s (Enterprise)

There is extremely little info on the size of Starfleet during the time of Star Trek: Enterprise , the prequel series set a century before Star Trek: The Original Series . What is known, however, is that it is also only a century after Zephram Cochrane made first contact with the Vulcans in the year 2063. This doesn’t give the people of Earth very much time to develop their own space fleet, especially since Cochrane's first contact with the Vulcans happened in the ruins of the terrible ravages of World War III. The nuclear war had left much of the Earth in an "atomic horror" that threatened the human race with a new dark age before contact with extra-terrestrial life blessed it with new technology and an era of global cooperation.

The Enterprise NX-01 is also confirmed to be the first human starship capable of traveling through space at Warp-5 speed. This limited information combined with the more explicit size of Starfleet in The Original Series , it is possible that there were no more than two or three fully-fledged starships in Starfleet. That would all change in the next century, as the Federation and Starfleet broadened horizons and began exploring deeper and deeper into Star Trek 's final frontier .

2200s (The Original Series, Discovery)

When it comes to the era that started it all, there actually is real hard data on one key aspect of the size of Starfleet, and it comes straight from the most primary of sources: series creator and all-around Star Trek visionary Gene Roddenberry himself. The Making of Star Trek  author Stephen E. Whitfield was granted access to Roddenberry and his team of creatives who developed the original Star Trek series that ran from 1966 to 1969. Roddenberry confirmed the size of Starfleet as he originally envisioned it while making the show that launched the legendary franchise, saying, “ In addition to the twelve starships, there are lesser classes of vessels, capable of operating over much more limited distances. ”

Related:  The Discovery Finally Joins A Star Trek Starfleet Tradition

There it is. In the time of Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock, there were 12 full-fledged starships such as the Enterprise. There is no record of Roddenberry ever specifying the exact number of the smaller vessels to which he referred. But by comparing several accounts, the Daystrom Institute Technical Library estimates there were likely several hundred of these ships. In terms of the  Star Trek: Discovery  Starfleet , as the series begins only 10 years before the beginning of the Enterprise’s five-year mission, any changes in fleet size between the two series are likely to be negligible.

2300s (The Next Generation, Deep Space 9, Voyager, Picard)

One hundred years after the Enterprise’s five-year mission, Starfleet had expanded across the stars. Captain Jean-Luc Picard remarked once that the Federation’s fleet covered a territory of 8,000 lightyears. The DITL calculates their figure based on the number of starships in various fleets mentioned during Star Trek: The Next Generation , as well as the size of the armadas summoned to defend the Star Trek: Deep Space 9 station during the Dominion War. By their estimate, Starfleet’s major ship count had grown into the thousands. More specifically, the most narrow figure is 5,000-10,000 starships. As  Star Trek: Voyager takes place within the same time frame as The Next Generation  and Star Trek: Picard picks up about a decade after Star Trek: Nemesis concluded The Next Gerneration ’s storyline, it is unlikely that the fleet grew substantially between these series.

2200s - Kelvin Timeline (Star Trek, Into Darkness, Beyond)

It wouldn’t be every era of Star Trek without mentioning the Kelvin Timeline , the alternate reality which contains 2009’s Star Trek and its two sequels, Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond . There is no data on the differences in fleet size between timelines, if they exist at all. But it's likely that Starfleet was roughly the same size as the primary timeline at the time of the 2009 film.

However, the destruction of Vulcan shifted the course of the Federation. Star Trek Into Darkness saw the secret construction of the USS Vengeance, a starship built specifically for war rather than exploration and diplomacy. The Vengeance was destroyed at the end of the film when it was crashed into the San Francisco Bay in an act of terrorism against the Federation. It is unclear whether there were more warships under construction at the time, but the combined trauma of the two attacks likely drove further expansion and militarization of Starfleet, and at a much faster rate than in the primary timeline of Star Trek .

How Big Are The Star Trek Eaglemoss Ships

How Big Are The Star Trek Eaglemoss Ships

Share the Universe!

You’ve probably heard of Eaglemoss’ Star Trek die-cast ship designs if you keep your ears to the ground for the latest Star Trek stuff. Perhaps you’ve been hesitant to collect the models because of the cost or because you don’t really want that much metal in your home.

The Eaglemoss collection has an incredibly diverse range, and we’re here to answer any questions you might have about them, including how big they are and how much space they will take up in your home.

What Are The Eaglemoss Models And How Big Are They?

Eaglemoss now produces three different model lines. The Star Trek Starship Series, for example, is a set of normal sized spacecraft from across all areas of the Star Trek world.

The Standard Eaglemoss models are around 5.5 inches long and are crafted of die-cast and hand-painted, and the The XL models are 10+ inches.

The second model line is a larger type of a few of the main collection’s models. These XL variants are 10+ inches long and manufactured with the same materials as the regular models.

Smaller Eaglemoss Models

The tremendous craftsmanship packed into these little models is the first thing shoppers will notice. Consider the Enterprise-D, as depicted above.

The over-sized round saucer part accounts for every window, elegant hull lines, and escape pods. It’s even more impressive than the show’s small filming model.

Eaglemoss does an excellent job of conveying the ship’s massive scale, despite the fact that it is only a few inches in length.

Anyone interested in purchasing one of these models will most likely prioritise build quality over all else. Each of these designs oozes accuracy. The metal hull plating and contours are identical to the elevated version on the Enterprise.

Take, for example, the Bird of Prey or the Romulan Warbird. The classic Klingon look is perfectly preserved aboard the Bird of Prey, with every geometric line down to the disruptor gun reproduced correctly.

All windows and hull detailing is present, similar to the Enterprise-D, which is astounding given the restricted surface space available to build these designs.

The Warbird and Bird of Prey even feature a surface-level hull scarring texture surrounding the model if you look closely.

Don’t worry, this isn’t due to model deterioration, but rather what appears to be a dedicated (and effective) attempt to replicate decades of combat and battle damage. Because none of these extraterrestrial ships are intended to be spotless, this inclusion is spot on.

The Tellarite Cruiser’s presence in this collection demonstrates Eaglemoss’ devotion to legend. If you look through Eaglemoss’ catalogue, you’ll see ships like the Curry-class cruiser, which appeared in.365 second of one DS9 episode, and the Steamrunner-class from First Contact.

The Tellarite cruiser is a rare ship, appearing only as a fuzzy CGI model in three episodes of Enterprise. Eaglemoss, on the other hand, has given the ship a makeover that will surely thrill all who care about these things.

Indeed, this physical model shows more detail of the ship than the ship’s representations in the series.

You don’t have to worry about your money going to an improper rendition of the spaceships you hold dear since every vessel in Eaglemoss’ collection has been approved by CBS.

The plastic is prone to slipping out of its foundation or slipping out of the ship. If you don’t intend on fiddling with your models too often, this won’t be a problem.

But, if you plan on pulling the figures from the plastic holder frequently, ensure your hand is anchoring the foundation and plastic stalk when retrieving the model.

Every spacecraft also includes a full magazine that discusses not just the ship’s features and design, but also its significance in Star Trek lore. Take, for example, the Tellarite Cruiser. Despite its minor role in Star Trek legend, Eaglemoss gives it the royal treatment.

Extra Large Eaglemoss Models

Eaglemoss’ XL range of ships are models like no other. These vessels are roughly twice as large as their smaller equivalents. As with most anything, size matters, and this model series is no exception.

prometheus

The larger surface allows the metal contours and increased texture work to truly pop, especially when compared to the model’s smaller version, which already had a strong showing.

Eaglemoss’ model’s vast geometry of this ship’s saucer part renews my admiration for Doug Dexler’s design. The XL model draws the viewer’s attention to the hull’s many elements, such as openings, symbols, and curvature.

Those who want  XL versions must be prepared to pay a premium. These vessels are much more costly than the smaller counterparts, at $75 per model (excluding subscription pricing, which Eaglemoss offers).

Some may consider these XL models to be pricey, but we can guarantee you that the added price is due to the increased number of materials used in the model, including the additional time spent painting the ships.

With that in mind, we can give some advice: if you’re only interested in one or two Eaglemoss models, the investment in all of these XL designs is well worth it. They look absolutely fantastic on stands in your living room or bedroom.

Regardless of how they’re used, these models give viewers a new respect for the Star Trek universe’s stunning designs.

Star Trek Eaglemoss Subscription Services

A subscriber option is available for those who do not want to limit themselves to only one or two models.

Those who choose this option will receive a 20% discount on the XL Voyager model, as well as three special free gifts totaling $100 as part of their membership, which they can cancel at any time.

Additional ships will be delivered on a monthly basis at the same 20% discount. If you’re interested in learning more about the subscription, go to st-starshipsxl.com.

Final Thoughts

Eaglemoss has replicated somewhere in the neighbourhood of 200 ships from the Star Trek TV shows and movies over the past few years.

Their series of Trek ship models began as a membership service, but if you move quickly enough, you may buy any of these replicas individually.

Eaglemoss set out to recreate every spacecraft ever shown in a Star Trek production, and while a few minor backdrop ships may still be missing, they’ve come a long way, with several themes that regular observers would be hard-pressed to recognise.

Depending on the space you have to accommodate one of these amazing die-cast metal ships, as a hardcore Star Trek fan, or even a casual viewer, you will definitely enjoy having a high-quality replica of Star Trek’s astounding spaceships in your home.

Kazon Ship Sizes

by Bernd Schneider and Jörg Hillebrand

Kazon ships of several types and sizes were featured in the first three seasons of Star Trek: Voyager, and even more names for them: shuttle, fighter, patrol vessel, raider, small raider, frigate, carrier vessel and Predator class. Yet, only three Kazon (or Trabe) ship miniatures were used altogether, and only two of them more than just one time:

  • Kazon carrier (see below ), a massive ship that dwarfs Voyager
  • Kazon "torpedo" (see below ), a small armored shuttle
  • Kazon raider and fighter (the main subject of this article), the same basic model for ships of two very different sizes

Raider/Fighter Studio Miniature

Preliminary studio miniature.

The Kazon raider/fighter model was designed by Dan Curry. He was inspired by the complex architecture of Lebbeus Woods.

star trek ships sizes

The model building was subcontracted to WonderWorlds Inc. (formerly Brick Price's Movie Miniatures), who delivered it without the various familiar "wings" and other hull extensions. This early version of the model has a large window-like structure in the place of the bridge/cockpit module. It is not the same as the cockpit window of the fighter variant though. A bit understandably perhaps, the producers were not entirely happy with the sleek look and asked David Stipes to come up with possible design modifications. Since this was already six weeks into motion control photography, the footage of that model had to be re-shot in late October/early November 1994.

star trek ships sizes

Side note Apparently under the assumption it was shown on screen, Galoob created a Micromachine of the wingless type.

Studio miniature variants

The Kazon raider of Maje Culluh must be a ship with many decks, whereas the fighter or shuttle is a small vessel carried in the shuttlebay of a raider. We previously believed that there was only one miniature representing both ships, and that except for the customarily different lighting the raider and the fighter were absolutely identical on screen. There are subtle differences, however.

star trek ships sizes

The larger Kazon raider with its characteristic two-deck bridge is the variant we can see on all known publicity photos of the ship model, on all clear depictions and diagrams in the Star Trek Fact Files , and in the form of the Revell/Monogram model kit. Yet, there is a previously unknown version of the shooting model for the fighter, using a cockpit module instead of the bridge. The possible existence of an interchangeable bridge module to turn a large raider into a single-seated fighter and back has been confirmed by Rick Sternbach. This version was depicted as late as in Christie's auction catalog of 2006. The difference between the two ships also becomes clear only on DVD caps, as will be demonstrated below.

Raider/FighterAppearances

star trek ships sizes

The "Making of" on the DVD confirms the impression that the miniature is just not yet completed. The upper bow surface of the Kazon ship model is flush, no module of any type is present. Instead of a module there is some kind of blind apparently covering the openings for the lighting and possible connectors for the module (s). A thin seam runs across this part of the surface just where we would expect the later bridge module of the raider to be attached. Something interesting to observe is that the framework below the cockpit (or below what should be the cockpit) is filled with what looks like solid black. This is not so on the finished raider, but seems to be the case in all fighter appearances. Apparently the black color suggests another (albeit unlit) window.

star trek ships sizes

State of Flux

Kazon raiders with the according bridge module instead of a cockpit window appear for the first time in "State of Flux". The spacious interior sets would make no sense if they were on a small fighter.

star trek ships sizes

Initiations

star trek ships sizes

Persistence of Vision

Another Kazon ship appearance is in "Persistence of Vision", although only in an illusion created by the Bothans. The scenes show a fighter with the proper cockpit module. Only in one take there is no module, obviously because it is re-used from "Caretaker".

star trek ships sizes

Yet, there is one small error in the episode "Maneuvers". In some takes the raider appears without the bridge module and therefore looks like a fighter. The reason is that this is actually stock footage from "Initiations".

star trek ships sizes

Several Kazon/Trabe ships can be seen in "Alliances", the most prominent being the small fighter that attacks the conference room, again with a length of less than 20m. Definitely another fighter type. Note the already mentioned black "extra windows" underneath the cockpit module.

star trek ships sizes

Investigations

Both types can be seen in "Investigations" when Tom steals a small Kazon shuttle, which is shown just after it has been released from the much larger raider. The two types are outfitted correctly, the first with the cockpit module and without additional lighting, the latter with the bridge module and the lit window rows. We also get to see the inside of the cockpit. Although the windows don't really match their supposed outer appearance, it seems that the pilot looks out directly into space.

star trek ships sizes

In "Basics I" the Kazon suicide saboteur's vessel is "not Culluh's ship, looks more like a shuttle" , according to Chakotay. In other words, we are dealing with just another fighter. The story of the pilot, Tierna, implies that he must have taken the shuttle to flee from Culluh's ship. Although this is a lie, it is further evidence that Culluh's ship is a big raider and Tierna's shuttle is small enough to fit into the raider's shuttlebay.

star trek ships sizes

In the same episode Tuvok identifies the ships that permanently fire at the secondary command processor as "small raiders". These are much smaller than Voyager, as can be seen in some takes where they are unmistakably in front of the Federation ship, so they should actually be fighters. Nevertheless, these ships have the bridge module and are lighted as if they had several decks. Another appearance of the raider variant is at the beginning of "Basics II" where the vessel is destroyed by Tom Paris. This ship is larger than the Type-9 shuttle and is identified as "Kazon patrol vessel".

star trek ships sizes

Existence of two sizes

Except for two negligible errors (the re-use of fighter shots for the raider in "Maneuvers" and the bridge and window rows on some of the fighters in "Basics I"), the difference between the two variants was consistently maintained by the VFX staff. It is evident that raiders and fighters may not be the same size and that they were designed to be different from the very beginning of the show, although secondary literature pretends that there is only one ship type. Even if there were not the small visual difference between the two variants, we would have to assume two sizes for logical reasons.

star trek ships sizes

Still, the question arises why the Kazon who were supposed to be frequent guests in the series were not given two more distinct ship designs. Overall, the complex shape and numerous small external features of the raider/fighter model rather suit a bigger ship which is why the raider appears as the more realistic variant. Moreover, it is impractical that a fighter which is designed to land would have an "elephant trunk".

Raider size estimation

The few available VFX shots and the studio model itself can be used for a coarse size estimation of the larger raider. As already mentioned, the lower size limit from ship encounters is 80m. Except for the few windows there are no lifeboats, hatches or other external features pointing to the ship's size. A closer look, however, at the publicity shots of the Kazon raider (Revell/Monogram model kit box and Star Trek Fact Files ) reveals that the window locations are not as arbitrary as they may appear. The episode "Maneuvers" shows even more lights that can be identified as windows. I have added all these windows to the inaccurate Fact Files schematic of the Kazon ship, and it works well with a deck count of 9 in the main part of the ship without the "elephant trunk". This yields a length of 160m under the assumption that the deck height is the same as on Federation starships.

Kazon carrier.

star trek ships sizes

The depiction from the Star Trek Encyclopedia II is inaccurate. Our revision takes into account that the front section is larger, that the engines are orange and other discrepancies from the actual model. Still, the depiction from the Encyclopedia is sort of canon since it appeared on a screen in VOY: "Relativity". It is possibly a yet unseen variant of the familiar carrier.
