5 Most Scenic Train Journeys You Need To Take In South India

Most of you will agree to the fact that train journeys are totally the best ones no matter if it is with a group or all alone. The journey turns simply more magical with the sight of scenic beauty as you look out of the window. South India is one of the most blessed sides of India when it comes to natural beauty and here is a list of train journeys you can take there to experience beauty that will be etched in your memory forever.

1. Chennai – Rameshwaram

The Pamban bridge is said to be the first sea bridge in India. According to Indian mythology, Lord Rama built this bridge (Ram Sethu) to rescue his wife goddess Sita from Ravana. This scenic ride is 2.2km long and the feeling of crossing this long bridge over the mighty sea is breathtaking.

2. Bangalore – Chennai

Heard of Chennai express? Well yes the movie, but it’s also a real express that runs in India. The very beautiful scenic Dudhsagar Fall just comes in the way on this train journey and is mesmerising enough specially during monsoons. Dudhsagar falls has a height of 310m and is one of the tallest waterfalls in India.

3. Ooty – Coonoor

There are two trains that run from Ooty to Coonoor by Indian railways. The Nilgiri Mountain Railways run this amazing toy train from Ooty to Coonoor offering you a scenic experience like never before. The misty meadows and the lush green tea estates are sure to blow your mind with its beauty as you wind through the Western Ghats.

4. Kanyakumari – Trivandrum

Kanyakumari to Trivandrum is a beautiful train journey for sure. This short 2-hour tour in Island express is all about the entrancing beauty nearby, the pristine natural splendour, and the most authentic feel of local life. You will pass through the beauty of South India that will stay with you forever in your memory afresh.

5. Kollam – Sengottai

The Kollam-Sengottai railway line connects Sengottai in Tamil Nadu and Kollam Junction in the state of Kerala. This train journey from one state to another will take you across many rivers, forests, hills and also a heritage bridge. You cannot help but give credit to the construction of railways when the National Highway crosses the lines both above and below tracks.

Five of the best train journeys through southern India

A boat passes under the railway bridge connecting Pamban Island to the mainland.

Largely offering a more efficient and modern service than routes through India’s north, trains in the south also have a wider range of options available for the same route — allowing more flexibility, depending on your time restrictions and budget. Whether you’re looking to gaze out upon the lush vegetation of the so-called ‘Green Route’ between Bangalore and Mangalore or let glimpses of rural life as you journey from Kerala to the southernmost tip of India, there’s simply no finer way to discover India’s south in all its beauty and complexity than by rail.

Chennai Egmore-Rameswaram Express: Chennai to Rameswaram

Departing Chennai at 7:15pm, this train travels down the southeast edge of India to Pamban Island, home of the Ramanathaswamy Temple, one of the four main sites of Hindu pilgrimage. A comfortable sleeper experience, this service allows plenty of time to eat dinner on board and to observe the twilit city before the railway’s lights-out rule comes into force at 10pm. On waking, passengers can nurse frothy coffee in the open doorway and prepare for the journey’s highlight: a spectacular sea crossing as the rising sun throws a sheet of gold across the water. Passengers will feel like they’re rolling through the waves as the train takes around five minutes to complete the stretch, pulling into Rameswaram in time for breakfast.  Top tip: Book a berth in a second class carriage with air conditioning, then find a seat in general class for the crossing.

Yesvantpur-Karwar Express: Bangalore to Mangalore

This train traces a glorious stretch of railway through the heart of Karnataka state, connecting the city of Bangalore with the port hub of Mangalore. Known as the Green Route, it’s an explosion of forests, rope-like creepers, clusters of wonky palms and skinny waterfalls with rainbows forming in their spray. Over 10 hours, the train slips into around 60 tunnels and thumps across more than 100 bridges over coffee plantations, thrashing rivers and valleys thick with growth. Top tip: Book seats in the Vistadome carriage, which enables passengers to experience 360-degree views from rotating seats.

The Island Express: Thiruvananthapuram to Kanyakumari

In just under three hours, the Island Express clanks its way down the Malabar coast, from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala to Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu — the southernmost tip of India where the Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal converge in a blend of different-coloured sands. Inching its way through wet, lizard-green jungle where giant leaves slap at the barred windows, the train lets passengers peek into rural life where kids play cricket with planks, saris hang out to dry in fields, and the smell of roadside cooking drifts in and out on the breeze.  Top tip: Buy a ticket in general class where the windows are open so you can feel the breeze.

Mandovi Express: Mumbai to Madgaon

With a total of 2,000 bridges and 92 tunnels, the Konkan Railway is a feat of engineering excellence. Designed and constructed entirely by Indian engineers, the track bores through mountainous terrain, circumventing a multitude of rivers. Bound by the Arabian Sea on one side and the Sahyadri Hills on the other, passengers benefit from warm sea air billowing through the open doors, dense coconut groves, and a pantry car that serves  Indian Railways’ best food.   Top tip: Carry plenty of 10- and 20-rupee notes to buy tea, coffee and freshly fried snacks brought round by hawkers.

Nilgiri Mountain Railway: Mettupalayam to Ooty (Udhagamandalam)

Completed in 1908, the single-track Nilgiri Mountain Railway is a hit with domestic travellers looking to escape the heat: honeymooners, families and students on long weekends often fill up the wooden benches, sharing hot samosas and singing Hindi movie hits. Climbing to an altitude of 6,200ft in the Western Ghats of Tamil Nadu, the steam train still uses a rack-and-pinion traction system to pull passengers past farms, tea estates and banana plantations, the cool scent of eucalyptus increasing at every twist and turn.  Top tip: Reserve a ticket at least two months in advance as the train fills up quickly.

A Quick and Easy Guide to Train Travel in South India

June 28, 2016 by Lauren Melnick

Last Updated on December 22, 2022 by Lauren Melnick

Travelling by train in India is by far one of the cheapest ways to experience this huge country. Not only is it a great way to interact with the locals, but it will also give you the chance to watch the lush green terrain rush past as you get a glimpse of the day-to-day life in small villages and big cities.

I had my first experience of India train travel when I visited the South of India in February. My friend and I spent three weeks in India travelling from the east to west coast and back again. By the end of it, I had developed a deep appreciation for train travel and a undying hate for night buses.

Here is a quick guide to everything you need to know about exploring South India by Train!

Table of Contents

Book Online

There’s an app for that, what is the foreign tourist (ft) quota, what are reservation against cancellation (rac) and waitlisted tickets, second class, sleeper class, ac tiers 1 to 3, train schedule and fares in south india, how safe is train travel in south india –, getting off at the right stop, how to keep your bags safe, what to bring with you on the train, how to buy train tickets in south india.

Travelling by train to India means a lack of spontaneity to a certain degree. You won’t be able to just rock up and board a train. You’ll be required to make a seat reservation for long-distance train journeys.

The best way to buy tickets for train travel in south India is online. Tickets do tend to book up as quickly as 90 days in advance, so it’s best to lock in those travel plans ASAP.

There are two websites where you can buy tickets from, the official IRCTC site and ClearTrip . I prefer to use ClearTrip as it is a lot easier to navigate and simpler to understand. Even though you do end up paying a wee little service fee on top – it’s worth it. The site also has a few nifty tools like Seat Availability Calendar . It gives you an indication of IRCTC seat availability for a range of dates across the different train classes, so you can find the best date and train to travel.

ClearTrip has also recently launched an Android, Windows and Apple iStore app ! And it does more than just allow you to book your tickets with a swipe of your finger, check ticket availability or see if your train is running on time. It also gives you updates on what is happening in the city you are travelling to, ideas on what to eat curated especially for you and a list of over 15,000+ things to do!

How to Book tickets at the Station

Sometimes life gets in the way, and booking online is not possible. This was the case for me when I tried to book tickets from Kerala to Goa. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, you can try going down to the station to book RAC, get yourself Waitlisted Tickets or try to grab yourself one of the Foreign Tourist quota seats.

Many of the trains in India have a quota of seats or berths only available to foreign tourists and IndRail pass holders. This can be a lifesaver when a train is fully booked, and you like to plan your trips last minute. The train offering the FT quota may still have a few berths available within a day or two of departure, making it possible to travel around at short notice.

But isn’t foolproof and you might not get the class you want. The FT quota is only 200 trains out of the 9,000 trains a day, and the quota might be as small as 2 seats and no bigger than 12.

Four of us tried to get the FT quota for tickets to Goa, but only two in our group managed to get tickets. This caused my friend and me to throw our travel plans out the window and decide to make a mission down the east coast of India. Which in hindsight I am glad happened because the quota tickets were in second class and I’m a motherfucking princess.

Due to how fast train tickets sell out online, the Indian Railways sells tickets in three different categories:

  • Confirmed Reservation (CNF)
  • Reservation Against Cancellation (RAC)
  • Waitlist (WL)

With a RAC ticket, you will still be allowed to board the train and travel, but you won’t have a specific seat or berth number. If one of the confirmed ticket holders cancels before departure, you will be then promoted to CNF with a confirmed seat or berth. In the worst-case scenario, no one cancels, and you might have to share a berth with someone and not get a comfortable night’s sleep.

A waitlist ticket means you cannot travel until you promoted from WL to RAC. But, if you have a low-numbered WL ticket, you stand a good chance of being bumped up to RAC. And if you don’t get onto the train because your number is too high, your money will be refunded.

To see if your status has been changed, you can check online. Just head on over to either Indian Rail or ClearTrip and enter your PNR number found on your ticket.

Choosing your Class

When booking train tickets in south India, you can choose between five different classes. The main differences between each class have to do with how much you value your personal space, privacy and comfort.

If you are okay with getting up close and personal with the locals to save a few rupees, you should be able to survive second class without any problems. The cars are packed with as many people as possible, seats are not assigned, and for overnight journeys, there is no berth to pull down to catch some shut-eye.

Hell, you should count yourself lucky if you manage to get a seat to sit on.

There is also no AC, so brace yourself for a couple of hours of sweaty bodies bumping up against one another. Just think of it like Britney Spears’s I’m a Slave 4 U music video, but less sexy.

For just a few more rupees, you can experience the comforts of stretching out on a berth, and personal space to make your night just a little bit more comfortable. Bedding is not included so be sure to pack a sleeping bag or a blanket –especially if you are travelling during winter when it gets colder at night.

It is the way most Indians travel, so you will have plenty of opportunities to have a chat with your bunkmates and get to know the locals. The big bonus of choosing sleeper class is that you get a better view of the countryside then the AC coaches, which makes up for the fact that there is no air conditioning.

For many foreign travellers, the price of this class isn’t going to put a HUGE dent in your budget, so if you aren’t looking to rough it or just want privacy – this is the class for you. I choose to travel on AC 3 for all my routes in India, and I loved it!

The different tiers are broken up with varying degrees of segregation and creature comforts. Here you will find air-con, complimentary bread rolls, bedding and the option to choose non-vegetarian or vegetarian for your meals.

I only had positive experiences during my train rides and luckily got to chat with some very interesting locals. The one nun I met even went out of her way to make sure we got off at the right station.

All the feels right there.

It is pretty easy to check the train timetable and fares for south India. All you need is an internet connection. If Indian Rail or Indian Railways is a bit too bewildering for you, ClearTrip once again comes to save the day. Seat 61 has a great resource for helping you understand the Indian Rail websites and navigating through the confusion.

What to expect on your journey

I know there are some horror stories that go around about how “unsafe” train travel in India can be (usually aimed at female travellers), but if you keep your wits about you as you would do anywhere else in the world, I doubt you’ll have any problems.

If you are a solo female traveller and worried about your safety, try to book the top bunk on the A3 class. No one is going to be able to get to you without disturbing the people below and everyone else below you.

I slept on the middle bunk because my friend is an ass and grew really long legs that kept on getting in passengers faces as they walked past. Needless to say, I had no problems, and the locals did their best to look after us.

If you are on a train that has multiple stops, make sure to set an alarm on your phone to ensure you get off at the right stop. This is especially important if you are on a night train and need to get off along the route before the train reaches its final destination.

There have been cases of bags being stolen or cut open on trains. To avoid this happening to you, there are three things you can do:

  • Buy locks for your zippers and secure your bag to the seat with a chain and a lock.
  • Sleep with your bag underneath your pillow.
  • Hide your valuables on you or inside your pillowcase.

Looking outside the window will only hold your attention for so long. If you are taking a long-distance train pack the following to help keep you entertained and more comfortable during your journey:

  • Phone Charger (yes there are power points in A3!)
  • Your tickets
  • Toilet paper
  • Hand sanitiser
  • Sheet or sarong to sleep on
  • Water to stay hydrated

Overall, train travel in India is an easy and interesting experience! Be sure to do a bit of pre-planning beforehand and enjoy the ride!

Darjeeling, India

Completed in 1881, the small-gauge (610mm) Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (commonly known as the Toy Train) was designed as an extension of the North Bengal State Railway, climbing from New Jalpaiguri, via Siliguri, for a tortuous 88km up to Darjeeling .

Given UNESCO World Heritage status in 1999, the Toy Train follows the Hill Cart Road, crossing it at regular intervals and even sharing it with traffic. Although no longer an essential mode of transport, the train is certainly a tourist attraction, and currently runs daily from New Jalpaiguri at 8.30am, reaching Darjeeling at 3.35pm.

Diesel engines are now de rigueur on the long route. Weather permitting, coaches with large viewing windows provide magnificent vistas as the journey progresses and the scenery gradually unfolds; the second class can be fun but crowded.

Some travellers may find the entire route from Siliguri painfully slow. The section from Kurseong is well worth the time, however; alternatively, you could take the short (“Joy”) ride from Darjeeling to Ghoom.

To make the most of planning a train journey in India, we have prepared a list of important tips. From booking your tickets well in advance to understanding the different classes and local customs, these tips will help you navigate the rails with confidence and immerse yourself in the beauty and culture of India.

Book your tickets in advance

Trains in India can be crowded, especially during peak seasons. To secure seats, book your train tickets well in advance through the official website of Indian Railways (IRCTC) or through authorised booking agents.

Choose your coach class wisely

The choice of class depends on your comfort and budget. For long journeys, AC classes are recommended for extra comfort. For short journeys or budget travellers, sleeper or shared classes are suitable.

Pack lightly and securely

Trains can be crowded and storage space is limited. Pack the essentials and keep valuables with you or under a secure lock.

Bring food and water with you

Trains have a food supply, but it's not unreasonable to bring snacks and bottled water, especially on long journeys.

Respect local customs and other passengers

Dress modestly, especially in conservative neighbourhoods. Respect cultural differences and maintain a friendly attitude towards fellow travellers.

Take safety precautions

Beware of pickpockets in crowded train stations. For added security, lock your compartment door at night.

India's best train trips are a journey to the soul of the subcontinent

Traveling by train in India is an intense, exhilarating experience © Tuul & Bruno Morandi / Getty Images

No trip to India would be complete without a ride on one of the country's 13,000 daily passenger trains. India's railways are the lifeblood of the nation – the veins and arteries that keep the country’s heart beating, snaking into nooks and crannies that no plane could ever reach, and keeping 1.38 billion people connected with friends and family.

From 10-minute commuter hops to epic four-day journeys across the subcontinent, there’s a train ride to suit every travel need and every budget. Penny-priced local trains transport millions across big cities such as Delhi , Kolkata and Mumbai , while lavish luxury locos offer the chance to roll around the country in style.

Passengers squeeze into an Indian train at Gwalior

With the windows down and doors flung open, India's trains offer a peek into the everyday workings of Indian life, crawling through dusty villages, winding up the lush slopes of forest-clad mountains and skimming beautiful coasts, bringing visitors within touching distance of drying laundry and coconut groves.

Onboard, you’ll find a microcosm of Indian society spread across eight different classes, from politicians and businessmen living it up in air-conditioned compartments to laborers sitting cross-legged on simple wooden benches. Affordable and relatively easy to book online, trains are also the most atmospheric way to explore India . Traveling by train is also a smart way to save money on hotels, with comfortable sleeper services connecting major cities nightly and meals often included in the ticket price.

Whether you're a committed rail enthusiast, or just dipping in a toe for the experience, here are the best train journeys in India.

The Deccan Odyssey

Best luxury journey.

Start – New Delhi; End – Mumbai; Distance – 1524km (947 miles); Duration – 7 nights 8 days

Standing out amongst the thousands of passenger trains that traverse the country every day, India's luxury trains roll languorously between major cities, their polished engines and gleaming livery glinting in the sun. For those who can afford it, it's the only way to travel.

Rail aficionados sing the praises of the extravagant Maharajas’ Express , which comes with personal butlers, bejeweled dinner plates and onboard bathtubs, but a more affordable option is the Deccan Odyssey . This luxe service runs from the Indian capital to Ranthambore National Park , the Taj Mahal in Agra and Jaipur and Udaipur , continuing to Vadodara and the World Heritage Sites of Ellora and Ajanta before arriving in Mumbai eight days later.

Less a train ride, more a cruise on wheels, this elegant train rumbles through the night, with passengers waking in a brand new city every day, to be met by coaches offering local tours. However, it’s perfectly acceptable to sit out the organized excursions and explore by yourself on foot or by taxi, or just pull out a paperback and enjoy the peace and quiet on board.

Mandovi Express

Best all-round rail experience.

Start – Mumbai CST; End – Madgaon Junction; Distance – 581km (361 miles); Duration – 11hrs 50mins

With the Sahyadri Hills rising on the left and the Arabian Sea sparkling on the right, the Konkan Railway is a textbook example of Indian railway engineering excellence. Flash floods, landslides and collapsed tunnels all failed to hinder the construction of this trunk line from Mumbai's famous Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj station (CST) to the beaches of Goa .

While numerous trains weave along this coastal route, the Mandovi Express stands out as a national treasure thanks to its scenic views and the legions of hawkers who wander the aisles vending freshly fried pakoras (vegetable fritters), hot samosas (fried savory pastries) and biryani in clay pots.

Eschew the air-conditioned carriages with tinted windows that obscure the views, and opt for a seat in third or general class, where a warm salty breeze wafts through the bars of open windows. With no glass between you and the scenery, you’ll get the best out of the experience, as the train navigates more than 2000 bridges and 92 tunnels, with coconut trees bending in the foreground and rivers gushing beneath the sleepers.

Darjeeling Toy Train

Best for families and steam enthusiasts.

Start – New Jalpaiguri; End – Darjeeling; Distance – 84km (52 miles); Duration – 7hrs 20mins

Since the late 19th century, this dainty little "toy train" has been trundling slowly uphill to the Bengali hill station of Darjeeling . Seven hours after leaving the base of the hills, this pint-sized loco wails arrives in a cloud of steam and dark smoke, offering a trip back to an earlier century. Trucks and carts creep to a halt to allow the train to wind across Hill Cart Road, where the carriages glide so close to shop fronts that you can almost reach out and touch the piles of apples.

Built by the British colonial government, the railway was originally used to transport tea and rice down to the plains, but it’s now Unesco World Heritage listed and more commonly packed with holidaying families singing Hindi movie songs and cheering at particularly thrilling sections of track such as the Batasia Loop.

Every day, the train zig-zags uphill from New Jalpaiguri (NJP) through thick groves of bamboo and pine, working its way around rich green tea plantations before hooting into Darjeeling. The main service is usually pulled by a diesel engine, but two-hour joy rides chug from Darjeeling to Ghum and back tugged by steam locos. On a clear day, you may even spot the sun-kissed summit of  8586m (28,169 ft) Mt Khangchendzonga hovering on the horizon.

The toy train rolls into Darjeeling Railway Station

The Dibrugarh–Kanyakumari Vivek Express

Best train ride for serious rail enthusiasts.

Start – Dibrugarh; End – Kanniyakumari; Distance – 4154km (2581 miles); Duration: 74hrs 35mins

Leaving once a week on Saturdays, this is one epic train ride, taking passengers from Upper Assam in the northeast corner of the country all the way to Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu , at the southernmost tip of India – the point where the Bay of Bengal, the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean meet. Making 57 stops in eight different states, this multi-day odyssey is a deep immersion into the verve and spirit of India's railways.

For the perfect combination of charm and comfort, book into a 2AC sleeper carriage – with open, four-berth compartments – and lie between clean white sheets watching students playing cards, mothers rocking babies in cradles tied from saris, and friends chatting over hot vadas (lentil-flour fritters) and endless cups of chai (sweet Indian tea). Take the opportunity to stroll up and down the 16 carriages to experience a microcosm of Indian society, and keep plenty of small denomination notes to hand for snacks, as hawkers rarely have change for big bills.

Island Express

Best for a quick taste of the indian rail experience.

Start – Thiruvananthapuram; End – Kanniyakumari; Distance – 87km/54 miles; Duration – 3hrs 20mins

By Indian standards, the Island Express is barely a local hop, but it’s a magical trip that takes passengers into the dewy depths of Kerala . For less than a dollar, passengers can stake out a window seat on this quiet country service that squeezes through the backwaters between Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala and Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu, passing villages of sugar-pink houses and tiny whitewashed churches.

Waterlogged paddy fields roll by, skinny palms bend as if bowing, and the steam from the kitchens of trackside houses drifts through the open doors. You’ll want to sit right up against the windows (or in the open doorways) to snap photos of children playing street cricket, elderly men in dhotis (white sarongs) smoking rolled-leaf cigarettes and bullock carts rumbling alongside the rail tracks. Just watch out for the stray branches that thwack against the sides of the train, leaving broken twigs scattered up the aisles and tiny flowers scattered underfoot.

Pune–Hazrat Nizamuddin Duronto Express

Best train trip for a first-time overnight ride.

Start – Pune; End – New Delhi; Distance – 1515km (941 miles); Duration – 19hrs 35mins

India’s sleeper trains vary widely when it comes to levels of comfort, with many services creeping along at a snail's pace and stopping noisily at local stations through the night – a definite hindrance to sleep! However, Duronto Express trains only stop at a tiny number of stations en route, using some of the country’s fastest trains, and they offer excellent meals and high standards of onboard service.

Recognizable by their bright green and yellow color scheme, these sleek and modernized trains are perfect for first-time night-riders looking to sample the Indian railway experience without the rough edges. Departing Pune just after 11am every day, the train speeds past rushing rivers, stretches of deserts, small mountains and serene villages.

There's much excitement in the middle of the day as lunch arrives on red plastic trays. Expect tomato soup with a breadstick and butter followed by foil-wrapped chapatis, steamed rice, dal, chicken curry, yogurt and pickles – and a small tub of vanilla ice cream for dessert. The meals loaded in Pune are the tastiest of the ride, but you'll also get a satisfying dinner and breakfast before rolling into Delhi's Hazrat Nizamuddin station, close to Humayun's Tomb .

Can I drink the tap water in India?

India is notorious among travelers for sickness – we’ve all heard horror stories about Delhi belly. We do not recommend ever drinking tap water in India, and travelers should avoid drinks with ice and foods that haven’t been cooked or peeled. Salad is off the menu for now – let your inner child rejoice!

What are the toilets like in India?

Squat toilets are the most common toilets in India. Always carry your own toilet paper and soap or hand sanitizer, as they are usually not provided. Flushable, Western-style toilets can be found in up-market restaurants, some higher-end hotels and in some tourist areas.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.
