The Koraput District lies at 17.4 degrees to 20.7 degrees north latitude and 81.24 degrees to 84.2 degrees east longitude. The Koraput is bounded by Rayagada in the east, Bastar District of Chhattisgarh in the west and Nabarangpur District in the south.

Koraput district was ruled by several dynasties such as Satavahanas, Ikshvakus, Nalas, Ganga kings and kings of Surya vans. In ancient times when the Nalas ruled this tract with Pushkari near modern Umarkote was their capital city. In the medieval period, Nandapur developed as the capital under the Silavamsi kings and after them under the kings of the solar dynasty. Viravikrama Deo of the solar dynasty shifted his capital to Jeypore about the middle of the 17 th century and developed into a prospered town.

It was a part of the erstwhile Madras Presidency and became a district of Odisha state on 1 st April 1936. In October 1992, erstwhile Koraput district was divided, resulting in the creation of Malkangiri, Rayagada and Nabarangpur district along with present Koraput district.

Raja Cave & Balmiki Ashram

Raja Cave & Balmiki Ashram in other name know as Kapat Parbat. It is believed the ancestor of Balmiki resides in this site situated on the bank of river Machakund and the river dividing border of Odisha & Andra Pradesh. It is a scenic spot & best place for trekking in Nandapur block for Eco & Cave tourism. Akhayaturtiya is the main festival of this site.

It is the festival named as ‘Parab’ – an annual tribal festival organized by the District Council of Culture, Koraput is a gala event of the state, organized in the month of November every year all over the district. Koraput is a major tourist destination in Odisha. It is a tribal district of Odisha full of hills  and forests. Koraput called the second Kashmir of Odisha. It is the Largest District of Odisha and is situated towards the southwest end of the state. The Koraput district is famous for its different projects and factories. Especially it is more famous for Mig fighter plane engine factory at Sunabeda.Rayagada and Semiliguda as well as N.H No 43 through this district.  Koraput  is the headquarters of this District. It has located on the hill slope and low lands. The best time to visit Koraput is winter and winter.

Deomali Mountain Peak, Koraput

The beautiful Jagannath temple is situated at a distance of one km. from the district headquarters of Koraput. This is one of the most popular Jagannatha temples of Odisha called Sabara Srikhetra. Maliguda Tunnel Bridge, Koraput

Maliguda tunnel bridge is located on the top hill of Maliguda Village and is 35 km distance from Jeypore and 50 km from  Koraput  City. India’s 4th highest bridge gauge railway tunnel stands at the top of a hill. The Maliguda tunnel was constructed with Japanese collaboration. Train snaking over the curves, entering the tunnels with smoke bellowing provides a glorious picture. A beautiful spring flows under the tunnel, which is another  tourist  attraction of the Koraput. Duduma waterfall is situated 70 km away from Jeypore and its other name is Machakunda. Jalaput Dam, Koraput

The Jalaput Dam is located at Jalaput Village near the Odisha- Andhra Border and is about 77 km from  Koraput  town. Jalaput Reservoir is a tributary of the Godavari River, which is built on the Makkunda River and is a hydroelectric dam. The  Jalaput  Dam is a Hydroelectric dam constructed on the Machkund River. This reservoir will serve as an upper pond and the existing Balimela Dam as a tail pond for installing Pumped-storage hydroelectricity units. The Dam and the MHES are the joint projects of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha states. Many tourists come here to visit and enjoy the Dams view in the winter. Bagra Waterfall, Jeypore, Koraput

The Bagra Waterfall is located about 9 km distance from Jeypore and 15 km from  Koraput  town. The scenic beauty of the place is attractive for waterfalls. The waterfall water level depends on released water from the  Kolab  dam. It has a large open space with rocks where it is suitable for a picnic and has a small stream surrounded by rocks. Nandapur is situated 30 km away from Sunabeda and the old capital of king Jeypore. It occupies a unique place in Koraput District. The Batrisa Singhasan arouses nostalgic memories of a golden era. Nandapur speaks volumes on the rich cultural heritage of the region. The Batrish Sinhasan 32 steps to the throne, linked with the fabled throne of King Vikramaditya of Ujjain has been a major crowd puller of the area, the 1.8-metre red image of Ganesh idol at the Ganesh temple and the Sarbaeswar shrine in Odishan style will amaze you. Jain Temple Subai, Koraput

The Subai Jain monastery is situated 10 km from  Nandapur  and 34 km distance from  Koraput  town. The place is famous for its Jain monastery. There are 5 Jain temples here, and among them are dedicated to Mahavira, Parshvanatha, Rishabhanatha and other pilgrims. Besides this, an image of four armed Tara also stands in the cell, which recalled the place not only the centre of Jainism but also a Tantric Pitha in Odisha. Damanjodi town is located about 28 km from Koraput Town. The biggest Aluminum complex NALCO has been established here. It has a cosmopolitan culture and acknowledges several religions like Jagannath Temple, Maa Kantabausini temple, Shiridi Sai Baba temple, Hanuman temple, Union church, Damanjodi mosque. Kechala Dam Koraput

The Kechala is located around 10 km in waterway Pond ferry point near  Koraput  town. There is a copper plate that reveals that had been granted Narasingha Mishra by the then Maharaja Krishna Dev on the occasion of the solar eclipse in 1620. Jain relics found in the place speak volumes of the impact of Jainism in the area in the medieval period. A 30 feet high Jain temple with images of Thirthankars identified as Resavanath, Mahavir Jain, Ambika Devi, Jakhya and Jakhyani indicates that Kechana was a seat of Jainism. Jagannath Sagar, Koraput

Jagannath Sagar lake is loacted at a distance of 22 Km away from  Koraput . The 255-year old Jagannath Sagar spreads over 67 hectares of land, which once used to fulfil the water need of Jeypore, has now a beautiful amusement park on its west bank, which has an open pandal and boating bay with stone packing on the slope. With an amalgamated view of the mountain range, temples and blue water in the backdrop, the place brings peace and solace to the viewer who can bond intimately with nature. The Jagannath Sagar is the biggest manmade lake of Odisha in Koraput Dist. The biggest manmade lake of the State dating back to over 300 years in Koraput. Bari Waterfall, Koraput

Bari waterfall is located at Bari Village 43 Kms from Damanjodi. It is about 65 km away from Koraput  town. There are two waterfalls known as Bari and another one in Lodha. The waterfalls are located on the borderline of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh. The waterfall one has to trek for approximately 15 minutes to reach the spot. Jeypore City, Surya & Moti Mahal, Koraput

Jeypore is the oldest and biggest town of Koraput district. It is only 22km from Koraput. It was the capital of Jypore Maharaja up to 1947. Jeypore is not only culturally but also commercially famous in the district. There is a decapitated place of the Maharaja of Jeypore along with old Jagannath temples towards the southern part of the town. Galigabadar Waterfall, Pottangi, Koraput

Galigabadar Waterfall is situated at the foothills of Deomali, 11 km from Potangi and 55 km from Koraput town. The water of this Galigabdar Waterfall flows through the springs from the top of the Hills. There is good communication to get to this place. Koraput is a city in the state of Odisha (formerly Orissa), near the borders of Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh states. It has enchanting hills, verdant forests, winding streams, exotic wildlife and a rich tribal way of life.

Understand [ edit ]

It is the commercial nerve centre of the region. The aircraft engine plant of Hindustan Aeronatics Limited (HAL) is at Sunabeda about 20 km from Koraput. National Aluminium Corporation (Nalco) operates at Damanjodi nearby.

By plane [ edit ].

There are three airports in the area - one at Visakhapatnam which is 5 hours by road, the second one is Raipur which is 7 hour to Koraput. The third one is Jeypore airstrip, which has some air connections with Bhubaneswar (IndiaOne Air).

By train [ edit ]

Koraput is connected to Vishakapatnam by a day train and Bhubaneswar by a night train. The Hirakand Express (train number 18447) leaves from Bhubaneswar at night (7:35PM), and reaches Koraput, the next morning (9:15AM). Most of the people get down at Vizianagaram at around 2AM (tell the TTE to wake you up) and catch share taxis for Koraput, Sunabeda or Jeypore - it takes around 3 hours and costs ₹350-400 per person. A passenger train (Visakhapatnam-Kirandaul Passenger, Train Number 1VK) leaves from Vishakapatnam in the morning (6:50AM), and reaches Koraput by evening (1:20PM). The journey through the scenic Araku Valley is breathtaking and attracts many tourists.

Samleshwri Express has two sleeper, one AC three tire and some general coaches for Koraput. It leaves Howrah at 9:35PM daily and takes almost 24 hours to reach Koraput via Rourkela , Sambalpur and Rayagada. From Kolkata you can take the Howrah-Koraput express. Another way is to take a train on the Howrah-Chennai route, get down at Vizianagaram (50 km before Visakhapatnam from Kolkata side) and catch share taxis to Koraput which takes 3 hours and costs ₹350-400 per person.

By road [ edit ]

Koraput on the hills can be reached from most places in either Odisha or Andhra Pradesh by travelling up a heavily forested winding road (also called a ghat road), with many sharp hair-pin bends. The road trip from either state is quite scenic. It is the most travelled and well maintained. If travelling in the early morning or late evening, you definitely will spot wildlife feeding along the road, or even spot the odd carnivore. There are forests of sandalwood trees all the way.

There are 2 ways to get to Koraput from Visakhapatnam and Vizianagaram:

• The route from Visakhapatnam traverses along Pendurthi, Kottavalsa, Srugaravarapu Kota (S.Kota), Araku, Araku Valley and Koraput. This route is a bit long and is well paved till at least the Andhra Pradesh-Odisha border. As Araku Valley is a hill station and major tourist attraction in the northern parts of Andhra Pradesh one can get decent accommodation in one of the 3 Andhra Pradesh Tourism Department operated resorts or private hotels at Araku Valley. And from there one can travel to Koraput after a refreshing night in the laps of nature. The road from S.Kota to Araku Valley is a ghat section or a winding mountain road which has 9 hair pin binds on route 1.
• The other route to Koraput from Visakhapatnam goes via Vizianagaram, Gajapathinagaram, Rambhdhrapuram, Salur, Pottangi, Simliguda, Sunabeda (HAL) and Koraput. From Vizianagaram the trip to Koraput is around 150 km and the journey time is usually 4-6 hr depending on the road conditions, traffic conditions and the weather. The road till the Andhra Pradesh and Odisha border is well maintained on the Andhra Pradesh side.

The journey to Koraput is scenic and as mentioned above and one will definitely see wolves, foxes, and if one is lucky enough hyenas and bears on the roads. Coming to the scenic part, it is a very scenic to watch but really dangerous for the inexperienced driver who never drove earlier on winding ghat roads (mountain roads), especially trying to avoid ditches, potholes and all other obstacles

• Bagara Waterfalls ( 25 km from Koraput ). River Kolab forms three waterfalls of about 9 m (30 feet). The last 5 km of the road from Khandaguda is 'kutcha road' (dirt track). There is a rest house near the falls.  
• Deomali . The highest & largest mountain peak of Odisha.  
• 18.5128 82.4409 1 Duduma Waterfalls ( Matsya Tirtha ) ( 88 km from Koraput ). The Machkunda River forms the 175 m high waterfalls, with facilities for generation of hydroelectricity at Machkunda Power Station. It is located in the deep forests and is amongst the higher waterfalls in the country. Ankadeli (Onukudelli), a village 3 km away, has its weekly market on Thursdays. The Bondas, a primitive tribe come to the market. There is a dam and reservoir at Jolaput nearby, across the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh border.  
• 18.8225 82.1672 2 Gupteswar Cave Shrine ( 55 km from Jeypore near Odisha-Chhatisgarh border ). Cave shrine of Lord Shiva on the banks of the River Shabari. The place name literally means 'hidden God'. Odisha Tourism has a lodge at Gupteswar. There are other caves such as Swargadwar Cave and Paravadi Cave nearby. There is a view point at Sangam Ghat. If you’re travelling to Koraput for a short trip, you can access it via Vishakhapatnam Airport or Rajahmundry Airport. The nearest railway stations are Koraput Junction, Suku and Bariguda. The best time to visit falls within October to March, and if you want to enjoy the scenic beauty, we suggest you travel via bus!

The fascinating beauty that abounds in Koraput, with its native tribes, keep it firmly positioned as a tourist attraction of global repute. 1. Kiriburu

You will be speechless after witnessing the beauty of Kiriburu which is situated deep inside the forests of Saranda and is particularly famous for the iron-ore mines. 2) Jagannath Temple

The Jagannath Temple situated near Tribal Museum, Koraput, is one of the ancient Jagannath temples in Orissa. You can easily reach the temple premises by road through buses that run from Vishakhapatnam and even through trains that connect cities like Bhubaneshwar and Vishakhapatnam. This temple is considered to inhabit Jagannath’s consciousness. The temple stands on a hill top that is called the Sabara Srikhsetra. A tribal festival, identified as ‘Parab’ is organized by UNICEF and it takes place every year.

3) Tribal Museum

The tribal museum is situated just behind the Jagannath Temple in Koraput. It showcases a huge collection of costumes and beautiful hand woven clothes along with musical instruments. This attracts tourists and promotes the local culture and heritage of the tribals at the same time.

4) Balda Cave

Balda Cave is one of the sought after places in Koraput, exactly situated in the range of 66 Km from Koraput. This beautiful cave in the mountains is one sight that you would not want to miss. In the summit of this mountain, you will find a flat structure, extremely huge and unlike any other witnessed before. There is also a reservoir situated here called Jalapat which is vast and breathtaking in its design. The main deity here is called the Donger Dei which is worshipped by the locals during the month of Chaitra. 5) Onukadelli

Located 3 km from the Duduma water fall, this small village named Onukadelli has aptly captured the interest of foreign tourists in particular for its market that runs on a weekly basis only on Thursdays when the Neolithic tribe of the Bonda region arrives and buys goods before returning to their own inaccessible region.

The road trip designed from Vishakhapatnam to Koraput via Araku Valley is best suited during the month of February or March, when the climate is moderately favorable. Koraput is a city located in southern part of Odisha. Koraput is also known as Sabara Srikhetra. It has many hill stations. The bounty of nature is showered in Koraput. Nandapur located at a distance of 5km from Koraput. Batrisa is the main attraction of this place. The 1.8 meters image of Ganapati illustrates the ancient tradition of the place.

Jain Statue is located in between Semiliguda and Nandapur. The place invites the attention of the devotees for exploration.

Koraput is a city in the state of Odisha near the borders of Andhra Pradesh and Chhattisgarh states. The district is located in the Eastern Ghats and is lies at 17.4 degree to 20.7 degree North latitude and 81.24 degree to 84.2 degree east longitude. The District is bounded by Rayagada in the east, Bastar District of Chhatisgarh in the west and Malkangiri District in the south. This place experiences minimum 12.0 Celsius and maximum 38.0 Celsius temperature. The District experiences mainly three seasons: summer, winter and rainy.

• Nearest airport is at Visakhapatnam (Andhra Pradesh), 206.8 kms from Koraput.

1.Rani Duduma Waterfall

Dumduma Waterfalls is one of the highest waterfalls in India which is around 92 km from Koraput Town and about 177 km from Visakhapatnam and 557 km from the state capital Bhubaneswar. It falls from a height of 157.5 meters and formed by the Machkund river in Odisha & Andhra Pradesh states of India. Machkund Hydro Electric Power Project located at ‘Onukudelli’ is supported by this waterfalls.

2.Kolab Reservoir

Situated at 20kms from Koraput, Kolab Dam is highly appreciated for it’s natural beauty. Kolab Reservoir generating Hydro Electric Power stands at an altitude of about 3000 ft. above sea level on river Kolab. Excellent place for weekend picnic and boating.

3.Jagannath Temple

This temple is the replica of Lord Jagannath Temple of Puri and situated at the top of a hill. Also known as Sabara Srikhetra Jagannath Temple . It was built around the 12th century in typical ancient Indian architectural style by a tribal group called the Sabaras who dwelt in Koraput, Orissa. It preaches tolerance and peace and follow the practice of no hatred towards any religion, cast or creed. You can visit the temple by climbing steps or you can take your vehicle up to the parking area close to the temple. Devotees can sit on the dinning floor and have Prasad (rice, dalma and curry)and Sweet Kher .

4.Sri Ramakrishna Ashram

Centrally located in Koraput, this Ashram has a well-equipped clinic with all the modern equipment. They provide a separate waiting and consultation areas which allow enough space for patients to wait conveniently at the clinic. It also provides excellent medical services .

5.Gupteswar Limestone Caves

This beautiful place is situated at 75km from Koraput town and 55km from Jeypore city. Gupteshwar caves are naturally formed limestone caves. It have the Holy Shivaling a inside the cave that gives a spiritual feeling. You can enjoy the beauty of hills, dense forest and river too.

6.Deomali-Odisha’s highest peak

Deomali hills is around 60 kms from Koraput. This majestic hill is heaven on earth. This place is surrounded by breathtaking deep green forest and valleys. It is the highest peak in Orissa and the tallest in the whole of the Eastern Ghats with an elevation of about 1,672 m.

7.Gudahandi Hills

It is located in the Ampani sanctuary of Kalahandi district of Odisha which is close to Koraput. The word Gudahandi is derived from two Odia words, guda meaning raw sugar and handi meaning a clay pot. The appearance of the hills resembles sugar pots that used be used in Odisha. Pre-historic pictographs, drawings and inscriptions are crafted on the stone walls of the Gudahandi caves. You will enjoy a mesmerizing view here.

Do You Know About The Tribal Museum in Koraput

The Tribal Museum was founded in 1992, holds great significance because of its authentic tribal culture. The museum is now looked after by the Council of Analytic Tribal Studies. It is situated behind the Jagannath temple in Koraput and has a collection of images and objects of tribal culture and traditions. Different types of sculptures, objects, jewelry, images, weapons & tools, fishing and agricultural implements are found here. There is also a library inside the museum. Government museum is another museum in Koraput situated in the town hall. It houses antiques and handicraft things and objects related to Jain period. The museum also provides a 3-D topographical model of the region where you can identify the hills, valleys, forests, dams and reservoirs, and the location of the different tribes and villages of the region.

There is a tribal Sacred Groove at the entrance which signifies the importance of conserving forests. There is a tradition of dedicating a patch of forest to the local tribe deity where no one can kill plants or living being. These sacred sites are maintained through traditional methods of community-based conservation.

Organic Coffee Plantation in Koraput

The Coffee Plantation farm is 3kms from Koraput town. Originally the plantation was started by King of Koraput Rajbahadur Rama Chandra Deo in the 1930s. Odisha Government has put efforts from 1960’s and is now successful in creating a brand for it. Currently it is known as Arabica Premium Roasted Filter Coffee Now, it is a joint venture between the Coffee Board of India and the Tribal Development Cooperative Corporation of Odisha Limited (TDCCOL).

Here, different varieties of coffee are grown organically. After beans are plucked they are sent to some other place for final processing after drying them up. Along with coffee they also have black pepper vines.
