What Trek Émonda is Right for You?

The Trek Émonda has always been a climbing bike — if you love epic hauls up huge hills, this lightweight, stiff road bike was made for you. The Émonda was created with the steepest grades in mind. Over the years, Trek evolved its patented Optimum Compaction Low Void (OCLV) carbon fiber to combine low weight and high strength.

The carbon  Émonda is  available in the superlight SLR build or SL, which is more affordable. The difference is the quality of the carbon, and thus overall weight. The Émonda also comes in an aluminum version (ALR). Finally, you can choose between two geometry options, H1 — an aggressive race fit — and H2, which is a more upright relaxed fit.

The Émonda is known for its neat and tidy look. Models with Trek’s Blendr Integration components allow riders to mount a cycling computer and bike lights directly to the handlebars. On the SLR version, shifter and brake cables are entirely housed inside the frame. SHOP TREK ROAD BIKES

History of the Trek Émonda

Émonder, in French, means “to prune,” which is fitting. Introduced in 2014, the Émonda was Trek’s pure climbing bike. Trek trimmed off as much as possible to create an incredibly lightweight racing machine. Newer versions have been designed to better handle mixed terrain, with clearance for wider tires and aero features. When it launched, this road bike was only available with rim brakes. But soon after, disc brakes were added for better control on descents.

As the bike evolved, we saw fewer exposed cables, more integration, and better aerodynamics. Despite the fact that this is a climbing bike, Trek spent a lot of time optimizing the shape of the head tube, down tube and bar/stem. Émonda timeline: 2015-2017:  From the beginning, Trek's focus was on creating a light, stiff road bike that excelled in the mountains. Its engineers spent years developing the  Émonda to be the lightest production race frame on the market. In 2016, Trek introduced internal cables and Di2 shifting on the  Émonda . It also unveiled the affordable aluminum ALR model using Ultralight 300 Series Alpha Aluminum.

2018-2020:  The second generation  Émonda  was introduced for the 2018 model year. Trek announced a new disc brake version alongside a revamped rim-brake model.   Claimed weight for the new disc-specific frame was 25g lighter than the previous-generation rim-brake  Émonda . The new rim-brake version was even lighter still, dropping another 25g. Tire clearance increased to 28mm.

2021+: Instead of making the Émonda even lighter, Trek focused on making the third generation faster on any terrain. Trek integrated several aerodynamic features to help this bike perform as an all-rounder. It also added a T47 bottom bracket, which is threaded instead of press fit, generally a more reliable standard. The new  Émonda  is disc brake only.

Trek Émonda SLR 9 road bike - 2018

In keeping with tradition, Trek released the SLR 9 just days before the Tour de France. And as always, it was a little lighter than before. This time, the 700 Series OCLV Carbon frame came with Bontrager Aeolus 3 D3 tubeless ready carbon wheels, and a full Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 electronic drivetrain.

Trek Émonda SLR Race Shop Limited road bike - 2018

For this model, Trek used its Ultralight 700 Series OCLV Carbon, ride-tuned performance tube optimization, E2 tapered head tube, direct mount brakes, and internal cable routing. This model comes with Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 shifting, Bontrager Aeolus 3 TLR carbon clinchers, a Bontrager cockpit and Montrose PRO saddle.

Trek Émonda SLR Disc Project One road bike - 2019

Project One allowed riders to customize several details. You picked your paint and parts, making each one of these bikes unique. There were options for Shimano Dura-Ace Di2, Ultegra Di2, SRAM Red eTap AXS, Force eTap AXS, and Rival eTap AXS. And about 20 different color schemes.

Trek Émonda ALR 4 H2 road bike - 2021

The ALR is Trek’s budget-friendly high-performance model — its lightest aluminum road bike that handles and climbs very much like its carbon counterparts. With the H2 geometry, it’s perfect for a more upright, less aggressive fit. It comes with tubeless compatible wheels, and a lifetime warranty.

The newest Émonda SLR frame weighs less than 700g, and with all-new aero tube shaping adds even more speed. But with ALR and SL models, H1 and H2 geometry, and a huge variety of specifications to choose from, there’s an Émonda out there for absolutely anyone who loves to climb up hills and then fly back down.

When Trek first introduced the Émonda back in 2014, it was sort of a surprising addition. Seeming to compete directly with the Madone, the biggest difference was that Trek’s new lightweight lacked the aerodynamic touches of its sibling. Now with the most modern iteration of the Madone, we know that Trek was already working on creating …

Trek Emonda SL 6 review

The legendary Madone gets another anagram

Robert Smith

Warren Rossiter

trek emonda s 2014

Trek’s rivals in the big three bike brands both launched aero-road machines in the form of Giant's Propel and the Venge from Specialized. Trek followed suit in the last revision of the Madone with it morphing into an aero-tweaked race special. With the innovative Domane, with its ‘decoupler’ soft tail design, being a straight-up rival for Specialized’s Roubaix and Giant’s Defy, the Madone was always in direct competition with the big S’s Tarmac and Giant’s TCR. Its aero revisions left a big hole in Trek's arsenal, which the Emonda is here to fill.

  • Highs: A ride full of life and excitement, a future classic
  • Lows: Average wheels and mediocre bars
  • Buy if: You want a true all rounder in the classic sense

Emonda may be an anagram, but it’s also derived from the French verb emonder, meaning to prune and trim away. So at the core of the design its lightweight with any extraneous material and features trimmed back. That’s certainly true of the flagship SLR 10 and its astonishing 690g frame weight and 4.65kg (56cm) complete weight (though its price tag certainly won't appear pared-down to anyone except the super-rich).

This SL6 uses the new 500 series OCLV carbon to create a frame weight of 1050g. That's impressive enough, especially for a bike at this price – the complete weight of our 58cm test ride is a very respectable 7.74kg – but it’s certainly not all about grams here.

The SL6 is well equipped, with a full Shimano Ultegra groupset

The SL6 is one of the best equipped Treks we’ve seen in a long time. In the past we’ve criticised them for their mix and match approach to component specs, which often saw a few lower grade items dropped into the drivetrain to save a few bucks. For 2015 though we are seriously impressed that Trek has gone the complete route with a full Shimano Ultegra groupset that adds an impressive value status to the overall equation.

Though the Emonda is an all-new bike, within minutes of hopping into the saddle we felt right at home. If for a moment we hark back to the glory days of the Madone, when it was one of the lightest in the peloton and winning everything (no matter how tainted those victories are now), the essence of that bike's excellence was its mix of lightness and handling prowess – and the SL6 has that and more.

The familiar H2 fit, slightly taller than the pro-level bikes, and slightly shorter in reach too (our 58cm bike has a 57.3cm top tube) gives a comfortable yet commanding riding position. We were still able to get down in the drops and push the pace without ever feeling cramped, yet rise up onto the hoods and you can push the pedals all day and cover epic distances free of aches and pains.

Climbing is where the Emonda excels – it may not be class-leadingly light, with its average weight wheels and middleweight finishing kit, yet it climbs with the vigour of a spider monkey escaping a hungry predator.

Crest the brow of a hill and point the SL6 back down and the chassis’ liveliness uphill transforms into a compliant ground hugging missile that floats over bumpy and broken surfaces with a limpet-like tenacity for holding its line. The amount of grip it exudes through hard cornering is mighty. The only negative is the alloy bar's narrow diameter, which doesn't offer the most comfortable of holds – and its overly stiff nature is at odds with the rest of this hugely impressive 2015 debut.

trek emonda s 2014

The Trek’s comfortable frame doesn’t need wider than 23c rubber

The Bontrager Race wheels are the most basic Trek offers, but even these are tubeless ready (admittedly, we're all still waiting to see if tubeless will ever take off on the road). They're decent enough – under hard sprint efforts we managed to induce a little brake rub, but nothing of any real concern and only apparent because the Emonda is so damn good at everything else it does. The slim 23c rubber they're shod with offers great all-weather grip and proved plenty tough enough in testing, and it's testament to just how smooth the bike is that Trek hasn’t resorted to anything wider for extra comfort.

In all the Emonda is the rightful heir to the classic Madone, blending ride quality, lightness and a whole shedload of riding fun. Its set to be one of the stars of 2015 and fully deserves the accolades that will undoubtedly come its way.

The Trek Émonda S 5 is built with an Ultralight 300 Series OCLV Carbon frame. The frame design down to the component parts were designed to serve a goal — to be one of the lightest performance bikes offered. The ride-tuned balance and handling elevates this Trek Émonda to another level.

1440000_2017_A_1_Emonda_S_5

OCLV is short for Optimum Compaction, Low Void, which refers to the carbon manufacturing process that Trek engineers developed decades ago. This allows them to produce carbon framed bikes with consistent, high quality that was not possible before.

featureassset_304499_300_series_oclv

The 300 Series OCLV Carbon offers best-in-class weight, best-in-class carbon, and gives the rider stiffness and strength. The 300 Series is at the lower end of the carbon scale, but it keeps the price down, areal weight low, and quality of the frame excellent for a nice price.

FeatureAsset_304499_300_Series_OCLV_6

The 300 Series OCLV is a great choice for this bike’s frame, as it is compliments the stiffness and weight ratio well. With the right relationship of stiffness-to-weight, the performance of the road bike increases. Trek tested every part of the frame extensively to maximize handling and pedaling performance, as well as ride feel of this S 5.

Trek Émonda SL 6 road bike review

Giving the ride feel of a thoroughbred GC frame, Trek manages to deliver the perfect balance of stiffness and comfort in the elegant looking and reasonably priced Trek Émonda SL6.

  • Sign up to our newsletter Newsletter

trek emonda sl6

The Trek Émonda SL 6 exists a few places below Trek's signature SLR model but that doesn't stop it embodying the GC spirit and as a frame it certainly feels worthy of Alberto Contador.

It's made the coveted  Cycling Weekly's Editor's Choice list for its lightweight, fast and comfortable ride quality that'll have dancing up climbs like Contador himself.

Think of top Tour de France bikes, and there are only a handful of names that pop into your head faster than the Trek Émonda.

While its old sibling, the Émonda SLR occupies the top echelons of WorldTour racing, we've got our hands on the more reasonably priced Trek Émonda Sl 6, coming in at £2,250.

Made famous in recent years beneath the likes of Alberto Contador and his Trek-Segafredo team mates, the Trek Émonda SL 6 feels like a thoroughbred GC frame regardless of its lower price point, and it's a frame that looks built to race yet still manages to maintain an air of elegance.

Trek Émonda SL 6 : c lassy looks

Sweeping lines blur one area of the frame into the other, and the slender seat stays make the bike look responsive and nimble. Pair the sweeping design with the matte silver paint job, and the bike has a seriously classy look.

But it isn't just surface, and the 500 series OCLV carbon makes the frame a skimpy 1091g. On our scales, the whole bike weighed in at 7.66kg, with any additional weight no doubt coming down to the components rather than the frame.

Down below, an overbuilt, beefy bottom bracket makes sure that every pedal stroke powers the bike forward – which is especially helpful when things start heading uphill.

Trek Émonda SL 6

Without a doubt, the most exciting equipment on the bike is the Shimano Ultegra R8000 groupset. Newly updated, it marks an enormous overhaul of Shimano's everyman groupset.

In terms of shifting feel and action, it's every bit as good as it's older, more expensive Dura-Ace sibling. The re-designed front mech and more ergonomic levers offer a light action to front shifts, and rear shifts are crisp, accurate and powerful.

Of the new Ultegra groupset itself, the most exciting feature are the excellent rim brakes – again, they're every bit the match to the Dura-Ace models.

With them being so good, it was a bit of a disappointment to find them missing on the Émonda. Instead, Trek has specced its Bontrager Speed Stop Pro brakes rather than Shimano's far superior rim brakes.

Bontrager's in house stoppers can't match Shimano's for neither feel nor power but it's an oversight we can forgive considering the Émonda's excellent frame and ride qualities. Besides, the Ultegra brakes are always going to be there for that next upgrade.

Trek Émonda SL6

Again, the Bontrager Paradigm aluminium wheelset could be lighter to match the svelte carbon frame but at this price point they're par for the course and they didn't feel like lead weights when heading uphill.

GC quality frameset

Out on the open road, the ride quality of the GC frame really shines through, and there's a sense of urgency laid up in the carbon that wants to let rip.

But there's a gentler side to it, too, and the high modulus frame gives comfort to the ride. Unlike so many stiff carbon frames, the Trek Émonda Sl 6 feels dampened and absorbent without that dreaded sluggishness that heavier bikes suffer from.

The skip in its step no doubt comes from its lack of weight, and even with the aluminium wheels and overbuilt brakes, the Émonda SL 6 weighs a tiny 7.66kg. Spoil yourself to some killer wheels and you'll bring that down even further.

Dancing out the saddle on the Émonda SL 6

On the hills it climbs like you'd expect from a frame built for Alberto Contador, encouraging you to imitate his signature out the saddle dance on the steepest inclines. But its a frame that really shines on the downs, too. The 992mm wheelbase is manoeuvrable but well balanced and the handling was sharp in the corners, everything you'd expect from a GC super bike.

The Émonda Sl 6's frame is faultless – lightweight, comfort and stiffness all in perfect equilibrium. Its more than a match for the aluminium wheels it comes with, but it has to meet a price point after all.

Trek Introduces the All New Émonda, Claims World’s Lightest Production Road Bike

Trek Emonda lightest production bike (1)

The title of the lightest production road bike in the world is not one to be taken lightly. So when Trek announced that they were introducing a new bike that would take the crown we were intrigued. Trek has certainly offered some light bikes over the years, but the lightest production bike in the world? That, we were excited to see.

Introducing the all new Trek Émonda, a new line of ultra light weight road bikes out of Wisconsin. While the name carries the same letters as Madone and Domane, Émonda is an all new frame that will sit along side of the current bikes. The name itself is derived from the French verb émonder – to prune or cut away. A fitting name for a bicycle where every bit of unnecessary weight has been trimmed away.

The end result is a new frame with enhanced integration, size specific performance, and the lightest production complete weight – provided you can afford it…

Trek Emonda lightest bike launch (1)

Last year when we took a tour of Trek’s Waterloo head quarters there were a number of Trek Factory Racing frames hanging in the rear of the Advanced Composites Room . From a distance the frames looked similar to Madones, but with a number of small changes. Given the fact that Trek has been working on the Émonda for three years now, the secrecy surrounding the frames on the wall now makes sense.

Trek has always touted the benefits of their OCLV (Optimum Compaction Low Void) carbon fiber, but light weight has always been a back story to ride quality and strength. In order to get the weight down as low as possible while still being repeatable, Trek started what they are calling their “most stringent and sophisticated frame tube optimization project” in their history. Using size specific carbon layups and a new ultralight Ride Tuned Seat mast on the top tier bike, Trek whittled the frame weight down to an incredible 690g. Not quite the 667g Cervelo RCA, but pretty close. Trek is still quick to point out that while the Émonda frame is extremely light weight, they claim it is the best riding road bike Trek has offered.

Emonda_SLR10

Built with Ultralight 700 series OCLV carbon for the SLR level frames, Émonda continues with a number of specifications like the E2 tapered head tube (1.5″-1.125″) with asymmetric steerer, BB90 bottom bracket with bearings pressed directly into the carbon, internal cable routing, and integrated 3S chain keeper, and the new DuoTrap S. As the second generation of their Speed Trap integrated computer sensors, DuoTrap S is now compatible with both Bluetooth and ANT+ connectivity and uses a new mounting system for improved looks.

Emonda_SLR10_Brakes

SLR Émondas will also be equipped with the new Bontrager Speed Stop brakes which are a dual post design similar to the Dura Ace integrated stoppers. Compared to Ultegra brakes, Bontrager claims a 50g per caliper weight savings. Speed Stop brakes also offer an adjustable leverage ratio, two position quick release, and a wide set design to work with the widest rims and bigger tires.

trek-emonda-lightest-production-road-bike

As a complete bike the flagship Émonda SLR 10 comes in at an incredible 10.25 lb (4.6kg) and will retail for an equally staggering $15,749.99. In order to get the weight down to that level Trek is equipping the bike with Tune Skyline tubular wheels, and a Tune Komm-Vorr Plus saddle in addition to the SRAM Red drivetrain and Bontrager parts.

Emonda_SLR10_Bar_Stem

Coming standard on the new SLR 10 is the new Bontrager XXX bar/stem combo which provides a 75g savings over the same XXX bar and stem combination used separately. The bar/stem combo features a 129mm drop, 93mm reach, and is compatible with Trek’s new accessory integration system, Blendr. Eventually to be found across their entire line, Blendr allows accessories like lights, computers, and even cell phones to be attached to the stem with out zip ties or additional mounts.

emonda slr 9

Émondas will be offered in a number of builds with three different frame levels. The S series Émondas use Ultralight 300 Series OCLV (1220g painted 56cm frame), a BB86.5 bottom bracket, a standard seat post, and are DuoTrap instead of DuoTrap S compatible. Jumping up to the SL level will gain you 500 series OCLV carbon (1050g painted 56cm frame), BB90 bottom bracket, DuoTrap S compatibility, internally routed cables, and the Ride Tuned seatmast. At the high end, SLR frames carry all of the bells and whistles using 700 series OCLV carbon for the 690g painted 56cm frame. Both the SL and SLR models will be sold as framesets for $1429.99 and $4199.99 respectively. The forks differ between the three models as well with a 518g painted fork for the S, 358g painted fork for the SL, and 280g painted fork for the SLR each with around 235mm of steerer tube.

emonda sl 5 wsd

Complete bikes will be offered in both men’s and Women’s WSD models as well as H1 and H2 geometries depending on the model. If nearly 16k is a little too steep, Émondas start out at just $1649.99 for the S 4. The full line starts at the S 4 and then proceeds with the S 5, S 5 WSD, S 6, SL Frameset, SL 5, SL 5 WSD, SL 6, SL 6 WSD, SL 8, SL 8 Red, SL 8 WSD, SLR Frameset, SLR 6 (H1, H2), SLR 8 (H1, H2), SLR 9 (H1, H2, WSD), and the top dog SLR 10 (H1).

This should be really great for getting more people into cycling.

Frederico

Me gusto muscho L’Emonda!

wako29

690g is pretty impressive when you consider that it has a seat mast cap. That RCa (and just about every other bike) runs a standard seatpost

J Train

@Vectorbug Dude, the S 5 retails for just over two thousand. For that you get a full carbon frame, FULL 105 11-speed, and tubeless ready wheels. If someone wants to get into cycling without feeling like they’re already behind the “curve,” this range is a pretty good option.

CXisfun

Justifying the jump from the SL frame at $1430 to the SLR frame at $4200 seems like a tough one

Jakozilla

Looks like … every other bike in the showroom. (But because it’s Trek the glue and carbon yarn were put into the muffin tin to bake by skilled craftsmen.) Yawn.

Bro

Did everyone forget about cannondale EVO black inc frame at 655g? Those have been out for years….

FastWayne

A Ducati with a real motor same price point. My net worth logic and my tech logic says, “Don’t compute.” $15,749.99 WTH ; p

DZ

Thats all well and good for making the lightest production bike. Lets see how they hold up to a years worth of heavy riding without frame failures. No thanks! I have a 6 yr old Litespeed Archon Ti, that is worry and CREAK free!

Edison

690g which frame sise? Does that weight include FD hanger? RD hanger & bolts? Water bottle bolts x 4pcs? Seat collar and bolts? Cable stops?

What about fork 300mm steerer?

Just trying to compare to other ultra light weight which in the market already.

FastWayne- exactly what i was thinking. “mass production” bicycle, albeit the flagship model, is now over $15,000. I’ll take a Panigale.

Frame weight is without hardware.

Gunnstein

Where do you attach the 2 kg lead weights you need in order to be allowed to race this thing?

Al Boneta

Pretty neat

MikeC

Funny how your mind can play tricks on you: here I was, thinking $16k for a bike?!? Woah! And then I looked up the price for the Emonda SLR 9, right around $8k, and for some fool reason thought, “OK, now that’s more reasonable…. Wait, no it isn’t!” Painful watching other companies do lightweight bikes and Trek seeming to not be playing that game.

pmurf

say what you will about the $16K wunderbike, but the lower end models are very well priced, especially if all the frames have the ride quality TREK is promising. Correct me if I’m wrong, but with the current Madone 3.1 retailing for $1,979, that would make the Emonda S4 the cheapest carbon road bike TREK’s ever released, right? (I realize there’s a groupset difference)

TonyC

Trek weighed a 56cm painted frame. Also, when you by a Trek frame, all the unique parts (seat cap, bb, hs…) are included.

Rico

Tune and THM deserve more of the credit for any of these superlight bikes. The H1 geo version of the frame looks pretty good aside from that weird seatpost deal they keep using. I wish companies would get rid of ISP and the Trek version is even worse aesthetically.

Ben

How about a rider weight limit? Me thinks the doctors and lawyers who pony up this kind of coin on bikes might be a bit large for the 10.

SLOBOB

OK guys, here’s the deal: Only the top end bike is the “lightest” production bike, and even that has a generous rider weight limit of 200lbs (due to the wheels) the rest of the line (with the top models sharing the same frame) have the standard 275lbs limit! If you’re a Clydesdale, ride gravel grinders, tour the world with all your belongings, commute daily, or just don’t like it, then guess what? Don’t buy it. By the way, I find it odd that people trash Trek for making an expensive super-bike, but not Pinarello, BMC, etc… if there wasn’t someone buying these things, they wouldn’t build them. I can’t afford a Porsche, a Tesla, or even a Corvette but others can and I still appreciate the engineering.

Daium

Ok,I think we are pretty much ready to see the 2015 McLaren Tarmac priced at $15,759.99 now.

mellon

I can’t wait to warranty one of these!

josh

@Bro, The goal was lightest total bike. Which trek Crushed. 10.25 for the Trek, compared to 11 for the Cannondale. It doesn’t matter if you have a super light frame and have to put extra shims and cups to attach the components to the bike.

Burt

Trek has cornered the market on bikes for orthopedic surgeons and professional athletes

John

How long until Trek’s other road bikes are updated for DuoTrap S?

John smith

I was pretty sure CANNONDALE’s evo NANO was lighter, stiffer and stronger than this bike…

Ghostt

Fun fact: here in the UK Trek are offering a lifetime frame and fork guarantee on all models, plus a very good crash replacement scheme.

At least with Trek there is some backup, unlike other brands who don’t want to know (cough..Cervelo..cough) Skurce: i’m a Trek dealer (so might be somewhat biased!)

Chader

@ John smith, please show us the data comparing the two frames to validate your claims… didn’t think so.

@ Ghostt, lifetime warranties here in the US too. You can also purchase the Trek Care Plus, which cover ALL parts for replacement for ANY reason, for three years from purchase.

@chader http://roadcyclinguk.com/gear/cannondale-supersix-evo-nano-now-even-lighter-3920.html

Now before you say this is based on a website, note bike rumour is also a website. How does a reader get actual data??? Can you show me by sending me the trek data?

Nick

I hope they’re paying Craig a licensing fee for his EE brake. http://www.eecycleworks.com/index.html

Seraph

@John – the Cannondale Evo Nano weighed over 11 lbs. So no, it wasn’t lighter.

F Almeida

Ja, they look like (less refined) EE-brakes. Hope Trek/Shimano honoured Craig’s intelectual property, his patent was still pending as far as I know…

Kovas

Trek’s next carbon bike will be a touring rig, called the NOMADE… I’m waiting for that one.

rustlemania

bunch of aliases in this thread complaining about how much it cost, smh.

Ilikeicedtea

Patent pending typically means no patent has been filed, but we would if we could…

@John smith, weight is one variable & the Dale may well be lighter. Trek may well be wrong in their claims. I never made a claim one way or the other.

You made claims about stiffness & strength being better for the Dale. Neither of those is substantiated in the article you linked. It is merely a press release with some weight info and nothing about stiffness, strength or even ride quality.

I doubt that you know anything about those values for the Dale and nobody outside of Trek has stiffness and strength for the Emonda right now. VeloNews and others will probably get the data for both bikes, then we can have a meaningful comparison. Until then, anything else is useless speculation.

They are both probably great bikes and anyone is free to chose whatever they like. Stop acting like you know this stuff enough to make a claim that one is superior to another.

@Ilikeicedtea, Patent Pending means they have filed the paperwork with the USPTO, but the patent has not been issued or denied.

They often take several years from the point of filing before they get approved or denied. At the point of filing, their idea is protected based on that date assuming the patent is approved.

jimmythefly

LOL at you guys comparing these brakes to EE brakes. Try WTB lever link, and the idea is probably older than that even.

Yeah. Pat. Pending means paperwork is filed, but it takes a while to go through the system.

So even if you know your design will not be judged patentable, it’s still worth filing the paperwork because you’ll have several years to sell and market you doodad with a nice little “pat. pending” text in the ad copy. And by the time your patent is rejected it won’t matter.

Jeff

Did anyone notice that the translation of Emonda is prune. Yet another lack of creativity on Trek’s part…

Here, in the real world, “patent pending” is used all of the time when it shouldn’t be used “legally”.

In fantasy land, yeah, one needs to have filed a patent application.

Trek Emonda SLR Disc Review

Jason Mitchell

In 2014, Trek introduced the 690-gram Emonda SLR to the world as the lightest production road frame at the time. Then, for 2018, Trek upped the ante by dropping weight even further while adding a full suite of disc brake options. The Emonda SLR Disc frameset tips the scales at a mere 665 grams and it turns out that it’s not only a lightweight climber, but a great all-day bike with responsive handling and instant acceleration.

2019 Trek Emonda SLR Disc H2 Features:

  • 700 Series OCLV Carbon layup
  • H2 fit puts the majority of riders in the perfect position
  • Stated 28mm tire clearance (tested to 30mm actual widths)
  • Flat mount disc brakes
  • Internally-routed cables in frame, external at fork
  • Full, lifetime warranty
  • Weight: 15.5 – 16 lbs. (depended on spec)
  • Frame weight: 665 grams (stated, vapor coat)
  • MSRP: $3299 (SLR frame) or $5799 – $11,999 SLR complete bikes

Trek Emonda SLR Disc Review

Sometimes, our test builds are off-the-shelf affairs, but not this time. I started with the 2019 Emonda SLR Disc H2 frameset as the foundation with SRAM’s 11-speed Red eTap HRD , but swapped out just about everything else during the 10-month testing period. Emonda SLR Disc was outfitted with four different wheelsets ( Zipp 454 NSW Disc , Zipp 303 Firecrest Disc , Bontrager Aeolus XXX 4 and Bontrager Aeolus Pro 3), a few saddles ( Fabric Scoop Shallow , Ergon SR Comp Men and Bontrager Aeolus Elite ) and a couple of different bars ( ENVE Compact Road Bar and Schmolke Evo TLR ). So, yeah, you could say it was put through the test mule process.

Should you choose to get a 700 Series OCLV SLR model, going with SRAM Red eTap AXS will set you back a mint, but the sweet spot would be the 600-series  2020 Emonda SL eTap build at $5299 . You get 12-speed Force eTap AXS, a great set of carbon clinchers and a few hundred extra grams (plus a wad of cash in your pocket).

Another alternative would be to go with a standard or Project One frameset, if you want something truly unique or want the more aggressive H1 fit. Complete bikes are always going to be your best value, but it’s ultimately your choice depending on your preferred setup.

Trek Emonda SLR Disc - Climbing to Granite Flats

Oh yes, the Emonda climbs

Grand Tour bikes, like the Emonda, are always a blast to ride. Their snappiness out of the saddle puts them in rarified company as the vert ticks off and the mountains get steeper. While disc brakes do still have a weight penalty over rim brakes, the 665 gram Trek Emonda SLR Disc frame pretty much obliterates that argument. You’ll never know the wiser as you accelerate up any climb around.

My first ride was a classic mountain ascent from my home to Tibble Fork Reservoir. It’s not a demanding climb, but it’s a steady one that, at the right cadence, allows you to push yourself to the limit. Though I was working out some minor fit issues, I still remember how impressive the bike felt. It climbed with ease, and, it rode smoother than expected when outfitted with 28-30mm fast-rolling tires. With true 25mm tires, like the new Bontrager R3’s, the ride is firm, but not harsh. Trek’s max stated tire width is 28mm with an actual frame clearance of just over 38mm. In my experience, 30mm actual tires cleared sufficiently for me.

The Emonda never let me down on any climb. I was actually able to take a few longstanding PR’s, like the following “Narrows to Redwood” segment that had stood for 15 additional attempts since 2014. Was this entirely the Emonda SLR’s doing? Well, likely not, but it certainly had a part in it and never held me back on any other climbs, long or short.

Narrows to Redwood Strava KOM

You can sit and pound out the vert or stand and push yourself to the limit. Either method is rewarded with zippy power and cable routing is such that it doesn’t interfere with your pedal strokes. Power transfer is as good as it gets.

All climbs turn downhill at some point, so how does the Emonda handle Utah’s mountainous descents? It is certainly calm and collected with the extra stopping power of discs. I prefer 44cm bars for fit, comfort and control. That extra width provides additional leverage while cornering — something I always appreciate. With the ENVE Compact Road Bars, I felt as if the handling was a little sluggish, but a switch to the Schmolke Evo TLR’s turned the Emonda into a very different machine. The ride became noticeably more responsive and the bike’s handling came into its own. Even at the highest speeds, I felt calm and collected. When needed, the slightest movements translated into precise cornering without feeling one bit twitchy. This bike rails on descents.

Trek Emonda SLR Disc H2 Review

That said, I’ll admit that it still doesn’t quite have the Italian, swan-like handling of the Pinarello Dogma F10 , but it’s not too far off. As an all-day ride, the Emonda SLR Disc is a hard one to beat and great builds will set you back half as much as a Pinarello. Indeed, climbing and descending are where the Emonda shines. When it comes to flat or rolling terrain, it holds its own — particularly if you can catch a wheel or slap some deep-section wheels on it ( case in point here ).  But. a Madone would be a much better choice for crushing your friends in the flats, or even something like the BMC Roadmachine 01 . The Emonda’s killer instinct shines in the mountains.

Trek Emonda SLR Disc Review

Make it your Emonda

As mentioned, I’ve changed the Emonda’s wheels, bars, tires and saddles quite a bit throughout the test and every change has been noticeable, but natural. So, what can I take away from that? I’d say that this bike is adaptable and capable to suit your performance or fit needs. Take some time to make it your own and you’ll continue to be impressed by how it responds.

In a world of total integration, it may seem surprising that the front brake cable is externally-routed. But, there’s genius in that decision as both Trek’s race teams and home mechanics alike will rejoice in the easy access. I did wish for some cleaner frame plugs for use with SRAM’s wireless eTap drivetrains, but out of sight, out of mind, I guess. The integrated seatpost mast with topcap is all part of the bike’s performance story, but adjusting the saddle angle is a tedious affair. Getting it just right requires an exercise in patience. Additionally, the large diameter of the top cap made the velcro straps of the EVOC Saddle Bag touch my inner thigh.

  • This Grand Tour racer has a journeyman H2 fit
  • Beautiful aesthetics with clean lines
  • Obliterates the disc brake weight penalty
  • Externally-routed front brake cable (easy maintenance)
  • A fun bike to rail
  • Maintains stability on fast descents
  • An excellent climber with excellent power transfer
  • Saddle angle is difficult to adjust
  • Seat mast diameter causes some saddle bags to touch my inner thigh
  • Toss those aluminum bottle cage bolts (they strip just looking at them)
  • Would love eTap-specific port covers
  • Watch that toe overlap

The Bottom Line: 2019 Trek Emonda SLR Disc

The race to the bottom isn’t always a good thing. But, with the latest Emonda SLR Disc, the 665 gram frame is everything I expected. It’s light, responsive and still comfortable, thanks to the added tire clearance afforded by disc brakes. I also love that Trek employs their H2 fit that will allow most riders to achieve a great fit without gobs of spacers.

Pure, lightweight climbing bikes are still a bit of a rarity these days. Getting one that features the confidence of disc brakes is even more rare. The Trek Emonda SLR Disc is wicked-light and features instant power transfer on short, punchy climbs and long, drawn-out affairs. It's a confident descender that handles with grace. Just a couple of niggles, but this is a great all-day bike for those who listen for the call of the mountains to come and ride.

I would like to comment that maybe the tyre clearance is declared from Trek that it is for 28mm tyres but this is not true in the real world. I had an issue with the front tyre 28mm that by the time it got larger (continental) when the tyre is new it has 4mm gap from the fork when the tyre has some km on it the gap from the fork is 1mm… so maybe trek didn’t make the calculations right.

trek emonda s 2014

This is on the latest model Emonda Disc? I didn’t have any clearance issues with 28c tires on the Emonda with either the Zipp 454 NSW or Bontrager Aeolus Pro 3 wheels. The Pro 3’s are 19.5mm inner width.

I’m sure you’re aware that Continental tires are notoriously wider than their stated widths. What are they measuring out to on your rims now?

trek emonda s 2014

Hi Jason, thanks for your review of the Emonda SLR disc. I’ve just bought an SLR 8 disc with Dura Ace mechanical and it’s for sure very lively on the hills. I find it a bit harsh on rough roads with 25mm tyres with tubes but I’m coming from a Cannondale Synapse which is very forgiving on similar roads. I’ll try running the Emonda with 28 tubeless tyres to see if it leaves it a bit more comfortable. I’ve a question on what you thought of the Bontrager Aeolus XXX 4 wheels you tried out on this Emonda and if you found it much of an upgrade compared to the Bontrager Aeolus Pro 3 that came originally on the bike? I’m thinking of getting the XXX 4 wheels but I’m a bit torn between these and a set of Zipp 303 NSW (which are more expensive) and Roval CLX 50 (or even the cheaper Roval SL 50). I’m 70kg, I don’t race so most of my riding is a mix of 100km-150km spins on rolling flats and hills on not so good tarmac with some long days in the hills training for Alps/Pyrenees trip once per year. Was wondering if you have any advice on these wheel options ? Thanks

Kieran… thanks for your comment and questions. Yes, as you found out, the Emonda SLR is certainly a firm ride — especially compared to a smooth Synapse. I would definitely recommend some 28c tubeless tires or even bigger, if you can fit them.

And, the Aeolus Pro 3’s are really awesome wheels and are hard to beat. They roll smooth and can be run tubeless. But, if you are looking for an upgrade, the XXX 4’s are definitely nice. You’ll get a little more aero benefit while still remaining lightweight. The CL 50’s are also a great option for the money.

Truthfully, you’ll be splitting hairs with the commendable Pro 3’s. They really are great wheels. But, a deeper-section wheel would certainly improve aero performance. The 303 NSW’s are flat-out awesome, but really expensive. If you want the best wheel period, that’s your choice. But, you really have to ask yourself if the extra $1000-$1500 is worth it. They are sweet wheels though. Good luck in your choices and enjoy that Emonda! Once you get a little wider tires on there, you’ll discover that it can be comfortable and remain a rocket of a climber.

Jason this is a 2019 disc brake slr model. I measure 3,5mm gap from the top of the tire to the fork.

Hmmm… as you know, tires vary between manufacturers and even between production runs, but I didn’t have any issues running even 30mm width tires on my Emonda SLR Disc. That was a measured width, but the actual tires were Zipp RT28’s on Zipp 303’s.
