Pickleball, a racquet sport resembling a cross between ping pong and tennis, is booming.

Participation in the sport grew from 5 million players in 2021 to more than 36.5 million in 2022 and more fans than ever are watching pickleball live. The sport is growing so rapidly that the pickleball product market could reach as much as $4.1 billion by 2026.

Much of this growth is thanks to increased visibility with a growing number of television contracts with major networks. These contracts brought pickleball to ESPN, CBS, and ABC. For some, watching pickleball tournaments on TV is more entertaining than watching tennis.

There are plenty of options to watch pickleball on TV in 2024. Each of the major tours has live TV and streaming coverage, making it easy to watch live pickleball today.

APP pickleball on television.

Association of Pickleball Players Tour

Previously known as the Association of Pickleball Professionals, the APP became the Association of Pickleball Players in 2023. The APP boasts the first tour officially sanctioned by USA Pickleball. The 2024 APP Tour features 12 APP tour stops with 4 majors, including an International and Collegiate Series and 3 events for the Next Gen Series, which cultivates younger players.

In addition, 5 APP tour events in 2024 will conclude with Pro Team competitions. These single-day team events have a $100,000 prize pool at stake. The upcoming schedule also includes an international team event for the first time!

CBS Sports Network and ESPN2 will broadcast pickleball live from the APP tour, though details are still forthcoming. These stations are available to subscribers of most cable providers and major streaming services, such as Hulu, Fubo, DirectTV, and YouTube TV. You can find APP TV on Facebook and YouTube. ESPN+ is available as a standalone subscription or as part of the Disney+ bundle with Hulu.

Can you find pickleball on TV tonight? We have good news! This year, The APP announced a partnership with Navio Networks, so fans can watch APP events on the newly-launched Court Sports Network as well, a Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television channel dedicated to fans of court sports.

Major League Pickleball Tour

Major League Pickleball distinguishes itself from the other professional leagues with a format that features co-ed team competitions. Many of the league’s 24 teams have high-profile celebrity owners and the league recently announced yet another new dynamic for the 2024 schedule.

The 2024 season will feature six divisions of four teams each for the regular season, meeting for 15 events. The schedule will include a minimum of 40 regular season matches, with each team facing every other team at least once. Divisional rivals will meet multiple times, and the season will close out with a two-week MLP Playoff Series.

What Is Pickleball?

Pickleball is a racquet sport that combines facets of badminton, tennis, and ping-pong. Participants play the game on outdoor and indoor badminton-sized courts with a slightly altered tennis net.

Players use paddles that look like big ping-pong paddles to hit a plastic ball that has holes similar to a Wiffle ball. Pickleball matches can be doubles or singles style. Players of all ages and skill levels enjoy the sport, and its popularity has grown continuously.

How Did Pickleball Get Started?

Pickleball is an invention of three dads, Bill Bell, Joel Pritchard, and Barney McCallum. They invented the sport on Bainbridge Island in 1965 when they were looking for an activity to entertain their children. The first known tournament took place at South Center Athletic Club in Tukwila, Washington, in 1976.

The sport gained more notoriety in 1982 when Sid Williams organized tournaments in Washington state. Organizers then formed the United States Amateur Pickleball Association in 1984 to expand the sport nationally. By 1990, players in all 50 states played pickleball.

The inclusion of the sport in the Arizona Senior Olympics in 2001 helped grow pickleball’s popularity with older Americans. Advocates for the sport formed the USA Pickleball Association in 2005. The organization held its first national tournament in 2009 and established a grant program to help players create new sites. USAPA created the International Federation of Pickleball to help grow the sport worldwide in 2010.

The Pickleball Channel became the first professional media group for the sport in 2014. CBS Sports Network hosted the first pickleball live broadcast with the US Open Pickleball Championships in 2016. ESPN3 live-streamed more than 17 hours of pickleball on television from the Margaritaville USA Pickleball National Championships at Indian Wells Tennis Garden in 2018.

USAPA became USA Pickleball in 2020. The sport’s popularity grew exponentially during the pandemic, fueling high-profile investments in the various professional pickleball leagues.

What Makes Pickleball Fun To Watch?

Pickleball has widespread appeal as a recreational sport because almost anyone can play it, but what makes it fun to watch?

Fast-Paced Games

Professional tennis matches can take several hours. Most professional team sports have similarly time-consuming games. By contrast, you can watch an entire pickleball match in less than 20 minutes. The short matches appeal to fans who do not have an evening or afternoon to devote to watching sports and to bettors who want to see quick returns.

Variety of Formats

Most tournaments follow a similar format to tennis as an individual sport. However, if you enjoy rooting for your local sports team, the MLP format features 24 teams, comprised of two men and two women, located in cities around the country.

Pickleball live matches strive to create a festival-style atmosphere complete with loud music and high energy. If mainstream sports are too self-serious for you, consider giving pickleball a try.

What Are Some Challenges Pickleball Faces?

With its smaller court size, pickleball does not have the dramatic sprints to run down a ball or deep serves that tennis does. The action is more confined and may appear less exciting to casual viewers. However, enthusiasts appreciate the more subtle strategy and nuance of the game.

While pickleball has a growing list of celebrity owners, such as Lebron James and Naomi Osaka, it does not yet have a Roger Federer or Serena Williams on the court. It has also yet to prove that it can pull in substantial viewership ratings on television or streaming services, though it is gaining in popularity every year.

There is hope that the increasing availability of TV and streaming coverage will boost the star status of the top players and elevate the sport to mainstream status.

How Does the Scoring Work?

Players can only score points when they are serving. Most games end when a player or team scores 11 points. However, at some tournaments, matches go to 15 or 21 points. Players must win by 2. If there is only a one-point difference when a player reaches the winning score, the game continues until a player with enough points to win has a two-point advantage.

How Is Pickleball Different From Tennis?

Pickleball servers must allow return shots to bounce before hitting them, so there is no serve-and-volley game in pickleball live matches. Additionally, players can not volley while inside the seven-foot kitchen on either side of the net. This alters the dynamic of play in comparison to tennis, giving matches a different pace and energy.

Because pickleballs do not bounce as well as tennis balls, there are fewer clean winners and overhead smash shots are not as effective. This changes the approach to play because winning is more about skill and strategy and less about physical ability.

Much of the action in pickleball matches takes place between the kitchen line and the baseline. Unlike tennis, where the singles game is the star of the show, doubles matches are the most popular and prestigious on pickleball tours.

Who Are the Top Players?

Some of the professional leagues have exclusivity deals that prevent some players from playing in other leagues. Each league has its own ranking system.

What Are Pickleball Ratings?

When you watch pickleball live, you may hear announcers talk about player ratings. Pickleball ratings represent a player’s skill level. They start at 1.0 and go up to as high as 8.0, depending on the scale. There are three types of ratings.

Self-Ratings

Players can assign themselves a rating based on their approximate skill level. Brand-new players should rate themselves in the 1.0-2.0 range. Once they have some experience, know the basic rules, and can keep a short rally going, they can rate themselves as a 2.5.

When players have a basic understanding of strategy and can hit some basic shots, they can rate themselves a 3.0. As they gain more control over their shots and improve their strategy, they can move up to 3.5.

When players can hit all of the basic shots with consistency, control, and pace and have a moderate number of unforced errors, they can rate themselves a 4.0. When they develop the skill to add spin, changes of depth, and adjustments of direction to their shots, and they can change their game to exploit their opponent’s weaknesses, they are ready to rate themselves a 4.5.

To earn a 5.0 rating, players must master all of their shots and pickleball strategies. They should also make few unforced errors. Players with a 5.5 rating or above are elite. To self-rate in this category, players should be winning matches against professional players.

USA Pickleball Tournament Player Ratings

This rating system is only available to USA Pickleball members. Players’ scores range from 0.000 to 6.999 based on their performance in pickleball tournaments. Players can choose to play matches against players at or above their skill level but not below. This prevents players from entering brackets where they can easily beat the competition to get a medal.

Dreamland Universal Pickleball Ratings

DUPR is the official rating system of the PPA. DUPR bases player ratings on both tournament and recreational play. It also takes every point a player scores into account, instead of just wins and losses.

DUPR weights the weaker player’s skill level in a doubles match higher because of the assumption that the weaker player will receive more shots. Additionally, it only has one rating, unlike the UTPR, which has separate ratings for mixed and gender doubles.

Carvana Professional Pickleball Association And The Tennis Channel Join Forces

Adam Howarth

The Tennis Network, serving as the PPA Tour’s 360-Media Arm, will oversee the production of all events and introduce Pickleballtv, along with its corresponding app and website.

The partnership between these industry leaders will involve collaborative efforts from ad sales teams to tap into the growing sponsorship demand for Pickleball.

A Commercial Partnership

Tennis Channel and the Carvana Professional Pickleball Association ( PPA Tour ) have established a commercial partnership aimed at pickleball’s national and international growth.

The collaboration will bring about the live broadcast of the majority of PPA Tour matches on Tennis Channel platforms, along with coordinated advertising-sales endeavors for media and tournaments.

Additionally, a 24-hour pickleball channel is set to be launched. Tennis Channel will take charge of the production of all events for the PPA Tour, which stands as the sport’s professional pinnacle, hosting the preeminent male and female pickleball players worldwide, including top-ranked players Ben Johns and Anna Leigh Waters .

Pickleballtv

The network will collaborate with the PPA Tour to introduce Pickleballtv, an independent pickleball channel initially functioning as a FAST channel, with plans to incorporate streaming live and video-on-demand services.

Distinguished websites and applications dedicated exclusively to the tour will also be developed. Notably, at least 100 live hours of PPA Tour play will be featured annually on Tennis Channel, including its free ad-supported streaming television (FAST) channel, T2.

Tennis Channel Plus, the network’s subscription streaming service, as well as its website and app, will provide extended access to PPA Tour coverage.

As the producer of all PPA Tour content, Tennis Channel will possess the rights to broadcast every match on the tour, including those not aired live, available for on-demand access.

This ensures that enthusiasts accustomed to viewing matches online on other platforms will continue to do so on Tennis Channel’s website.

This Pivotal Moment

As part of this agreement, Tennis Channel’s parent company, Sinclair Ventures, retains the option to invest in the parent company of the PPA Tour.

Tom Dundon, owner of pickleball.com and the Professional Pickleball Association, was understandably enthusiastic regarding this pivotal moment for the Carvana PPA Tour:

“This is an exciting moment in the ongoing evolution of the Carvana PPA Tour,” he said before going on to add, “There’s no company in the world that’s as well positioned as Tennis Channel to immediately capitalize and expand upon the current pickleball explosion and the early success of the PPA Tour.

“Their model is unique in sportscasting, and we couldn’t be happier to work with them to develop a consistent, reliable home for current pickleball fans and others to come.”

Signature Elements

Both entities will closely collaborate to merge the tour’s year-round premier pickleball competition with the network’s robust media infrastructure, aiming to maximize the PPA Tour’s impact while bolstering the sport’s popularity and participation levels in the United States and internationally.

Tennis Channel will deploy its signature elements such as original storytelling, studio productions, podcast content, social and online engagement, continuous promotion, and round-the-clock discourse tailored for pickleball audiences.

The tour will collaborate with the network to enhance the in-person and on-air experience for consumers. The partnership will also explore the burgeoning sponsorship interest from organizations keen on investing in this increasingly popular sport.

The Tennis Channel and PPA Tour sales teams will also be offering joint packages encompassing the tour, events, and media platforms.

Gold Standard In Pickleball

Ken Solomon, President of Tennis Channel, commended Tom Dundon and PPA Tour CEO Connor Pardoe: “Tom and (PPA Tour CEO Connor Pardoe) and their teams have created the gold standard in pickleball,” he said.

“The future of any sport is driven by its media approach. Tennis Channel has spent two decades streamlining the sheer volume of tennis, its tours, and its schedules in an easy-to-follow system across popular platforms.

“Now we’re going to apply that same hub-and-spoke model to show people how compelling pickleball and its stars are at the professional level.”

Jack Sock And Genie Bouchard

Several active or recently retired professional tennis players, including Grand Slam doubles champion Jack Sock , former WTA No.5 Genie Bouchard, and former ATP No.11 Sam Querrey , have participated or plan to participate in the PPA Tour.

Major League Pickleball (MLP by Margaritaville), the recently merged team league under a united holding company with the PPA Tour, will also receive extensive coverage on Tennis Channel’s platforms.

Noteworthy for its roster of celebrity owners, including Tom Brady, Eva Longoria, and LeBron James, MLP has garnered widespread media attention recently. Former and current tennis luminaries such as Chris Evert, Naomi Osaka, Tennis Channel analyst Tracy Austin, and Nick Kyrgios are also part of MLP ownership groups.

A Surge In Popularity

Pickleball has been an integral part of Tennis Channel’s long-term strategy, coinciding with the sport’s surge in popularity in recent years.

The network initially featured a PPA Tour event in September 2021, subsequently expanding its coverage significantly in 2022, with events broadcast throughout the year.

The 2023 calendar is slated to host 25 PPA Tour events. However, it’s worth noting that Tennis Channel will not air pickleball during time slots designated for live tennis.

The network commemorated its 20th anniversary on May 15.

When I first started writing about pickleball, I hadn't appreciated the huge range of related features it encompasses: from building communities and players fighting against court closures to overcoming health challenges and raising money for charity, it's a whole new world! I love the stories about the smaller towns from the farthest-flung corners of the U.S. and how those residents have adopted pickleball to create friendships and community spirit.

Pickleball tournament will bring top professional players to Houston this weekend

Professional pickleball is coming to Houston this weekend as the PPA Tour holds its first-ever tournament in the area.

The pro draw of the Veolia Houston Open starts Thursday with five different competitions set to be held over a four-day span. Those competitions are men's singles, women's singles, men's doubles, women's doubles and mixed doubles.

Pro qualifiers and amateur doubles competitions were held Wednesday.

What venue is hosting the Veolia Houston Open?

The Veolia Houston Open takes place at Life Time Kingwood. The competition starts each day at 11 a.m.

Daily tickets for the event start at $25. Weeklong passes start at $80.

NEW COURTS: Pickleball continues to grow in Houston with 22 new courts opening at Life Time Kingwood

What is the PPA?

The PPA Tour is one of three main professional pickleball tours along with MLP and APP. MLP, which is a co-ed team competition, recently completed a merger with the PPA that sees the two maintain their separate brands.

There are 34 PPA and MLP events this year, including 10 combined tournaments. This weekend's tournament is a PPA-only event.

The APP, or Association of Pickleball Players, held its own Houston Open last October. It was held at Houston Memorial Tennis Center.

The PPA and MLP have deals with many of the sport's most well-known players.

Who is playing in the Veolia Houston Open?

The top-ranked PPA Tour world men's player, 25-year-old Ben Johns, headlines the event. He will be playing in the singles competition, men's doubles competition with his brother Collin Johns and mixed doubles competition with Etta Wright. Johns won all three competitions, which is called a Triple Crown, last weekend at the North Carolina Cup in Cary, N.C.

World No. 2 Federico Staksrud has made the championship of each singles tournament he has played in this year.

Anna Bright is one half of the No. 1 seed in women's doubles and mixed doubles. She is pairing with Rachel Rohrabacher in women's doubles and James Ignatowich in mixed doubles.

The top seed in the women's single bracket is 24-year-old Mary Brascia.

SUPPLY AND DEMAND: Pickleball boom means Texas needs twice as many courts to meet demand

Who is not playing in the Veolia Houston Open?

Teenage phenom and women's World No. 1 Anne Leigh Waters, who won her 100th PPA Tour gold medal last weekend in North Carolina at the age of 17, is not participating in this week's tournament. World No. 2 Catherine Parenteau is also skipping the tournament.

Former professional tennis star Jack Sock, who ranked as high as No. 8 in men's singles and No. 2 in men's doubles during his time on the ATP Tour, is also not competing this week. Sock won the 2015 U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships title at River Oaks Country Club.

GRAND OPENINGS: New pickleball courts slated to open in Harris County parks at Cypress, Spring and Huffman

What is the schedule for the Veolia Houston Open?

Thursday: Men's and Women's Singles

Friday: Mixed Doubles

Saturday: Men's and Women's Doubles

Sunday: Championship Rounds

Where to stream the Veolia Houston Open?

If you can't make it in person to the Veolia Houston Open, the tournament will be streamed online. Championship court will be streamed on Amazon Prime Video and PickleballTV each day of the tournament while there will be a YouTube stream of the grandstand court.

Some of Sunday's matches will be streamed on the Tennis Channel, which will broadcast the tournament from 11 p.m. to 3 p.m.

Mayor Parker leads Southwest Philadelphia neighborhood tour to help clean up living conditions

By Eva Andersen

April 13, 2024 / 9:41 PM EDT / CBS Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia Mayor Cherelle Parker  led a walking tour on Saturday to assess neighborhood conditions and discuss strategies for improvement. The tour is the second in a series of 10 neighborhood walking tours aimed at identifying areas in need of attention, including hot spots for illegal dumping.

Carlton Williams, the Director for the Mayor's Office of Clean and Green Initiatives, said it's one step in a large approach to making the city more clean for people who live there.

"We're going to South Philadelphia, the Northeast, the Northwest, all parts of the city so that we can understand all of the quality of life issues that people face," Williams said. "Every neighborhood is different and we want everyone [from the city], including the mayor, get a chance to hear and see the different types of issues that we have to face as a city."

The walking tour, which commenced at 28th and Woodland Avenue, brought together Mayor Parker and dozens of city officials to evaluate the state of the neighborhood.

eva1.jpg

"You have L&I out here, Sanitation, Streets, Parks and Rec, Commerce, and many other departments, PPA, and the Police, working together," Williams said. "We want people to know that we're accessible."

Residents and workers at local businesses on Woodland Avenue said seeing the mayor in their neighborhood made an impact.

Jane Geiger, age 75, expressed appreciation for the mayor. Geiger stood outside the business where she worked on Woodland Avenue.

"Her presence is telling the community and people all over the world, for that matter, how she cares," Geiger said.

The impact of the tour extended beyond just the older residents. Young participants like Kaniyah Blackwell, daughter of Crystal Saviour, said she enjoyed meeting the mayor.

"I never saw a Black mayor before," Blackwell said.

While addressing all the issues discovered on the tour will take time, Mayor Parker wants residents to recognize that this is just one step on the journey to change.
