Whether you want to get a bite to eat in the sun or take a coastal stroll, the village of Malahide has plenty to keep you happy.

While its grand old castle and handsome stretch of coastline are enough to entice visitors, Malahide has more to offer than these two attractions. The village is packed with independent boutiques, cool pubs and restaurants that draw even the biggest gourmands out from the city centre.

Great walks

Malahide is a quick train ride from the city centre and the station is conveniently located in the heart of the action. Make your way down past the pastel painted houses and the steeple of Saint Sylvester's Church to Malahide Beach, where you can potter around on the sand or set off on a lengthier stroll along the Coastal Route to Portmarnock. This 4km trail is set on an elevated path with parkland on one side and the sea on the other, taking you past Velvet Strand and the Martello towers at Portmarnock and Robswall. At the latter, you can head inland to the Robswall Park Hillside Hike. The path skirts green fields dotted with shaggy Highland cows and provides great views of the sea.

Back on the other side of the village, the estate of Malahide Castle & Gardens is filled with walking trails that snake through 260 acres of parkland. Before you even get to the 800-year-old castle, there are the wide green fields of the West Lawn lined with wooden sculptures and rare trees. The giant Cedar of Lebanon is a particular beauty, its low twisting branches thick with pine fronds. On a sunny day, stop off here for a picnic, or continue on to the sweeping playground fit for kids of all ages.

Malahide Castle and more

Stick around Malahide Castle because there’s far more to see than just the grounds. The highlight is the castle itself, which was home to the Talbot family from 1185 until 1973. Take a tour of the castle and get a glimpse at how the other half lived in grand halls and drawing rooms filled with antiques and oil paintings. The walled gardens are also home to the only butterfly house in Ireland, where rare species flutter all around you in a glasshouse filled with tropical plants.

The nearby Casino Model Railway Museum is set inside the thatched Casino Cottage, so quaint it could be on the cover of a children’s book. Inside, there are around 350 model trains, some of which run on tracks overhead. Keep the railway theme going on the Malahide Road Train , known as Toots. This red road train takes you through the village to the beach and back to the castle on a relaxing ride that’s a great way to see the sights with younger kids.

If you’re travelling with a group, get yourself over to Lambay Island and visit Ireland’s only herd of wild wallabies. The marsupials were introduced in the 1950s and have thrived on the island ever since. You’ll need to book a private group tour in advance, but it’s worth the planning to spot the wallabies alongside other wildlife like seals, deer and puffins. As an aside, the crab fished around the shores of Lambay is considered the finest by Ireland’s top chefs, so snap it up if you see it on a menu. 

Places to eat

If all that activity builds up an appetite, you’re in luck. The main stretch of Malahide has plenty of restaurants, many of which have outdoor seating. The al fresco section in Old Street is one of the finest, with chairs draped in faux fur and wooden beams decked with fairy lights and twisting vines. The menu is packed with bistro classics like beer battered fish and chips and steak ciabatta, with little twists like pickled daikon and a relish made from dates and miso.

Savour the Parisian vibe over at  Déjà vu , where the daily brunch menu features savoury crepes and pain perdu dripping in maple syrup. Or embrace the spice at Jaipur , an award-winning restaurant that serves authentic Indian dishes with a twist, like tandoori monk fish, lamb shank nihari and chingri butter masala.  

For the freshest local ingredients served tapas style, stop by The Greedy Goose . Choose from dishes like seared Kilmore Quay scallops with crispy pork belly croquettes and garlic, honey and chilli-glazed chicken wings.

Places to drink

You’ll need a good dose of caffeine before a day of adventure, so head to A Dó , where they serve up Ariosa coffee and dirty iced chai tea spiked with a double espresso. If that doesn’t put a spring in your step, nothing will.

A visit to Malahide Castle and Gardens is one of the most popular things to do in Malahide for good reason.

There’s a little bit of something here for young and old, with a plethora of walking trails on offer, a cafe, one of the most impressive castles in Dublin and more.

The castle is also home to a wealth of history (and a ghost, apparently!) and it’s a great spot to soak up some of the areas past.

Some quick need-to-knows about Malahide Castle

Although a visit to Malahide Castle is fairly straightforward, there are a few need-to-knows that’ll make your visit that bit more enjoyable.

1. Location

It’s less than a half-hour’s drive from Dublin City Centre to Malahide village and a mere ten minutes from the airport. Two bus services plus mainline rail and DART services make it an easy place to get to – it’s a 10-minute walk from the village.

There’s lots of free parking available at the Castle, but you can also leave your car in the village car park or use the metred parking on the streets, and enjoy the 10-minute walk to the Castle.

3. Opening hours

The Castle and the Walled Garden are open all year round from 9.30am, with the last tour at 4.30pm in summer and 3.30pm in winter (November – March). The Butterfly House and the Walled Garden The last entry to the Fairy Trail is half an hour earlier, so 4pm in summer and 3pm in winter.

4. Gorgeous grounds

The vast grounds (including the children’s playground) surrounding Malahide Castle are free to the public so you can sit and admire your surroundings or have a picnic while the children play. With 250 acres, you’re not going to get to see everything, so you’ll have an excuse, if you need one, to come back.

5. Historic Castle

Malahide Castle dates to the 12 Century when Richard Talbot, as all good Normans were wont to do, built a castle on lands gifted by King Henry II. The Castle is unique in that the Talbot family owned it for almost (with one blip) 800 years.

In 1174 King Henry II visited Ireland, accompanied by the Norman knight, Sir Richard de Talbot. When King Henry left, Sir Richard stayed behind to build a castle on the lands previously owned by the last Danish King.

These lands were gifted to Sir Richard by King Henry for his loyalty to the Crown and included the Port of Malahide. The Talbot family prospered until the English Civil War brought Cromwell’s men to their door.

They were sent into exile in the west of Ireland, the only time the Castle was out of Talbot hands. They remained there for 11  years until King James II came to power and restored their property.

Upon their return, Lady Talbot insisted that the Castle be stripped of its defences to make it less attractive to further invaders. The Talbot family was popular with the locals, and they owned the Castle was it was sold to the Irish Government in 1975.

Things to do at Malahide Castle

One of the reasons that a visit to Malahide Castle Gardens is one of the most popular Dublin day trips is down to the volume of things to do on offer.

Below, you’ll find info on the walks, the tours, where to grab a coffee and some unique things to do here with kids.

1. Walk around the grounds

Approximately 250 acres of land surround Malahide Castle, which is why it’s here that you’ll find some of the best walks in Dublin .

The grounds are a peaceful and beautiful place to go for a stroll, particularly on a nice day. We generally park in the car park just to the left of the main entrance.

From here, you can either follow the perimeter path the whole way around or you can set off into the field to the left of the car park and join the trail there.

2. Take the castle tour

The Malahide Castle tour is well worth doing. Especially if you’re looking for things to do in Dublin when it’s raining…

The tour costs €14.50 for an adult, €7 for a child, €9.50 for a Senior/Student and €42 for a family (2 + 3) and it’s around 40-minutes long.

The Malahide Castle tours are led by experienced guides that take you through the history of the castle along with it’s many interesting features.

The banquet hall is a gorgeous example of medieval design. Younger people might particularly enjoy finding out how people got on without indoor plumbing in the past. At least five ghosts are said to roam the Castle. Keep your eyes peeled!

3. See the walled garden

If you’re doing the Malahide Castle tour, entrance to the Walled Garden is included. Otherwise, you can get gardens-only admission.

The Walled Garden is beautifully laid out and has many nooks and crannies to explore and play hide and seek. Allow at least two hours to walk around. Many seating areas allow you to enjoy the view of the castle exterior.

The herb garden is interesting; many of the plants noted as poisonous are mainly used for medicinal purposes. Gardeners love investigating the plant houses scattered throughout the garden, and the Victorian greenhouse is gorgeous. Keep an eye out for the Peacock!

4. Visit the Butterfly House

The Butterfly House at Malahide Castle is housed in the Cambridge Glasshouse in the Walled Garden. Although it’s not huge, there are about 20 varieties of exotic butterflies fluttering around above your head and through the tropical plants.

You’ll be able to see all the stages that lead to these beautiful insects (or Lepidoptera) emerging into the Butterfly House.

You can pick up a leaflet at the Admissions area to help you to identify the different butterflies. This Butterfly House is the only one in the Irish Republic.

5. Hit the Fairy Trail

If you’re looking for things to do with kids in Dublin , look no further than the Fairy Trail at Malahide Castle Gardens.

Situated in the Walled Garden, the Fairy Trail is a must for the young and the young-at-heart. Make sure you pick up the little booklet which tells you which way to go and has clues and questions to answer as you go along.

Children (and older) love the sculptures and fairy houses, and it’s lovely to hear the children calling out for the fairies as they wander along the 1.8km trail. The consensus from visitors is that this Fairy Trail is very well done and one of the best around.

6. Visit the Casino Model Railway Museum

The Casino Model Railway Museum is home to the Cyril Fry collection, preserved for future generations per the man’s wishes. Many of his model trains were based on original drawings and plans from several railway companies.

The museum has an interactive display offering in-depth examinations of his work and historical information about the railway system in Ireland.

The museum is open April to September from 9.30 am-6 pm, and October to March 10 am-5 pm. Last entry at 4 pm.

Malahide Beach is well worth a visit (although you can’t swim here!). Walk across the sand dunes all the way to Portmarnock Beach or stop off for a swim at High Rock and/or Low Rock.

3. DART day trips

The DART runs between Howth and Greystones . Buy a LEAP card and hop on and off all the way along its 50km length over 24 hours. It’s a fantastic way to explore Dublin, and in one day, you can swim in the Forty Foot in Dun Laoghaire, take a tour of Trinity College, and walk the clifftops at Howth.

#1 Explore Malahide Castle 

Without a doubt, the top thing to do in Malahide is to visit the majestic Malahide Castle and Garden. Built in the 12th century, the castle was owned by the Talbot family for nearly 800 years.

As one of the oldest castles in Ireland, it is the town’s must-see sight – and some visitors make the trip to Malahide Village just to see it. Although we think it’s well worth sticking around to see the other top sights!

What To Do in Malahide Castle Dublin, Ireland

The only way to visit Malahide Castle is on a guided tour. On a Malahide Castle Tour, visitors get to see the interior and learn about the history and Talbot family heritage (perhaps even hearing a tale or two about resident castle ghosts). There are a few tours to choose from – including a classic tour, a kid-friendly tour and a whiskey tasting tour.

There is no direct train or bus to Malahide Castle from Dublin. That said, the Malahide train station and closest bus stop are just a short 10-to-20-minute walk from the castle. Malahide visitors looking for the most direct way to get from Dublin to Malahide Castle should consider driving or taking an Uber or FreeNow taxi.

#2 Spend Time in the Malahide Castle Gardens

Strolling around the expansive castle gardens is one of the best things to do in Malahide, Ireland – especially if it is a warm and sunny summer day. The estate encompasses 260 acres of land (which is now named the Malahide Demesne Regional Park).

The park at Malahide Castle is inclusive of trails, forests, a cricket pitch, tennis courts, golf course, dog park and the fantastic Malahide Castle playground. (Families take note: The Malahide playground is one of the best things to do in Malahide for kids!)

While getting inside the castle requires a ticket, it is completely free to visit the vast estate and Malahide gardens.

#3 Eat Lunch at a Malahide Park Café

Before leaving the castle grounds, grab a light lunch at one of the park cafes: Avoca or The Garden House.

The Avoca Malahide Café features a self-service area, as well as a food market, where they sell quiche, sandwiches, soups and delicious baked treats (try the brownies, they are truly divine!). Visitors can dine inside or on the outdoor terrace.

The Garden House Malahide Café is another dining option near the castle. The garden center (where they sell BBQs, patio furniture and plants) also doubles as an eatery with an all-day brunch menu.

Alternatively, pack your own picnic lunch and bring it with you. There are plenty of places on the grassy field to spread out and enjoy a picnic lunch with a castle view. We actually think it is one of the top things to do in Malahide Castle for travelers on a budget!

#4 Walk along Malahide Beach

One of the best Malahide attractions is the sandy shoreline! The coastal village is bounded to the north by the Malahide Bay Estuary and to the east is the Irish Sea (Muir Eireann), creating a lengthy and incredible coastline.

Visitors can kick off their shoes and walk barefoot over the sand and rocky shore – or follow the paved coastline path. Either way, the panoramic vistas are sure to please. Views stretch across the inlet to Corballis Bay Beach and over the sea to Lambay Island.

It is important to note, however, that the small beach in Malahide changes drastically with the tide. The dramatic tide swing and strong currents make swimming in Malahide quite dangerous. Only fit and experienced swimmers should enter the ocean and it’s best to go in at Low Rock or High Rock (but always with caution and at your own risk).  

#5 Visit the Malahide Cows

The Highland Cows are one of the odd Malahide tourist attractions, but one of our favorites. Grazing on a patch of land just across the street from the beach, the long-haired Highland Cattle are a must-see!

The friendly cows often greet guests and pose for photos. In addition to the hairy cows, there are sheep that graze on the grass, as well. Visitors can get a good view of the animals from the stone wall – or anywhere along the iron fence if the cows are further up the land.

#6 Hike Robswell Park Hillside

The small hill that rises behind the grazing cows is Robswell Park – and it’s a fantastic place to take in spectacular views! The park features vast meadows that are crisscrossed by paved paths and nature trails.

Popular with families, joggers and dog walkers (it is where we took the puppy we were pet sitting ), the park is located on the site of the original Malahide settlement.

Visitors can follow the trail up to the highest point (marked on the Malahide, Ireland Map below) for an excellent scenic viewpoint. The panoramic view encompasses Malahide Estuary, the Irish Sea, Lambay Island, Ireland’s Eye Island and Howth Head.

#7 Trek along the Malahide to Portmarnock Walk

After taking in the views from Robswell Park, set off on foot along the Malahide-Portmarnock Coastal Walk. Highlights of the stroll are the stellar sea views, the historic Martello Tower (which has been renovated into a residence) and Portmarnock Beach.

The beach in Portmarnock – called the Velvet Strand – is a 3 mile (5km) stretch of shoreline that is a fabulous place to walk, build sandcastles or go for a swim. The beach also holds a spot in aviation history, as Charles Kingsford Smith departed on the second east-to-west Atlantic crossing from Portmarnock Beach in 1930.

To get back to Malahide, visitors can retrace their steps from Portmarnock to Malahide or hop on Dublin Bus 102 or H2.

#8 Discover Malahide Village

The heart of Malahide Village paints quite a pretty picture – especially in the summertime, when flowers are in full bloom and the sky shines bright overhead. Main Street Malahide runs east-west, with smaller streets breaking off to the north towards the harbor and south into residential areas.

The quaint lanes in the village center are lined with the best restaurants and shops in Malahide. In fact, one of the best things to do in Malahide, Dublin is to go shopping. If you don’t have time to visit both Howth and Malahide – and can only fit one destination into your trip plans – which should it be? We have truly enjoyed both of these coastal towns, so it is difficult to choose just one. That said, the two towns are quite different and will likely appeal to different travelers.

Visitors most interested in rich history, impressive architecture and international fare should go to Malahide. Those who enjoy elevated coastal walks, amazing scenic views and the freshest seafood should head for Howth.

How To Get To Malahide

As previously mentioned, travelers have several options for getting to Malahide – including train, bus, taxi and car.

DART Dublin to Malahide

The DART Train from Dublin is the easiest way to get to Malahide. The Dublin to Malahide train departs frequently (every 20 minutes on weekdays). It’s about a half hour ride on the DART from central Dublin to the Malahide DART Station, which is the end of the line.

Visitors can find scheduled Malahide DART times on the official DART Malahide Timetable .

DART Train from Malahide to Dublin

We also recommend using the DART from Malahide to Dublin to make the trip back to the city. The same DART Timetable to Malahide shows the times for the return route.

Bus Malahide to Dublin

Visitors can also take a Dublin bus to Malahide. The Malahide-Dublin Bus Route H2 connects Dublin City Centre to Malahide Village – as does Route 42. That said, we don’t necessarily recommend taking the Dublin-Malahide Bus – as it takes longer than the train.

The bus from Dublin to Malahide makes about 60 stops along the route and takes approximately 50 minutes to an hour. Unless you are staying directly on a Dublin to Malahide Bus Route, it is likely faster and more efficient to take the train.

Malahide Taxi

FreeNow Taxi and Uber are also available to transport passengers from Dublin City Center to Malahide Village. The ride will take about 30 minutes and cost about 40 euros. 

Travelers with a rental car can also drive to Malahide. Once in Malahide, there is a free parking lot at the beach, a paid lot off of Malahide Road (Main Street) and on-street parking for a fee.

Everything to know for Shania Twain in Malahide Castle - stage times, set list, transport and tickets

It'll be the battle of country music in Dublin this weekend as Shania Twain's gig clashes with Taylor Swift's Eras tour on Friday.

Luckily, there's no bad blood between the two iconic singers and the best thing about being a woman is the prerogative to have a little fun, right?

With Taylor playing three nights in the Aviva Stadium and Shania playing one night in Malahide Castle in Dublin there'll certainly be plenty of fun! Here's everything to know if you are going to Shania Twain's concert on Friday, June 28.:

Stage times

Gates at Malahide Castle will open at 4pm on Friday and the concert is scheduled to start at 5 pm.

There will be two support acts before she comes on. Australian singer Delta Goodrem will open the show for about thirty minutes and then there will be about a fifteen-minute break before English singer Rag’n’Bone Man comes on for forty-five minutes to an hour playing hits like Human and Giant and Skin.

While the exact set list for the Malahide Castle could differ, here is what Shania sang at her recent Las Vegas residency, including 21 of her biggest hits:

Transport to Malahide Castle

There are a number of public transport options to Malahide Castle, by Dart, train and bus, and pedestrians must enter the castle grounds via Hogan's Gate.

Malahide Dart station is 15-minute walk to the arena entrance, with Darts running every 15 minutes. There also be concert express bus running directly to Custom House Quay, Dublin 1, following the gig. Fans can book a single or a return journey here .

For concertgoers hoping to drive, there is limited car parking available at Malahide Castle and fans are advised to book parking in advance through the Evntz app.

Banned items

Concertgoers will not be permitted to bring in any bags over A4 size as well as seating of any kind, or umbrellas. The other usual stuff won't be permitted within the grounds such as alcohol, selfie sticks and flares. See a full list from MCD here .

There are a handful of tickets still available on Ticketmaster , starting at €60.

Fans have been advised that Ticketmaster is the official and only legitimate ticket seller for this event and warned not to buy from bogus ticket sellers or from unofficial sources.

John Waters’s Baltimore

The writer and director, famous for making theatergoers squirm in their seats, says he feels most at home wherever the outsiders gather in his native city.

The 1998 John Waters film “ Pecker ” ends with an unlikely crowd carousing in a seedy basement bar/impromptu photo gallery in Baltimore. Strippers and one busty, enthusiastic art collector dance on tables as a talking Virgin Mary icon watches. It’s a jubilant, chaotic and naughty party open to anyone with a sense of humor, just the way the director likes it.

Mr. Waters, 78, gained a cult following in the 1970s with delightfully shocking films like “ Multiple Maniacs ,” “ Female Trouble ” and, of course, the raunchy “ Pink Flamingos ” before breaking big with “ Hairspray ,” in 1988.

Since then, Mr. Waters has built an empire of camp, now comprising more than a dozen films, spoken-word shows and numerous books, including his 2022 debut novel, “ Liarmouth ,” which has been optioned for a movie that Mr. Waters hopes will star Aubrey Plaza .

Mr. Waters, a Baltimore native, grew up in Lutherville, Md., a suburb he described in a recent phone interview as “upper-middle-class everything.” Yearning for escape, he had his mom drop him off at a Baltimore beatnik hangout called Martick’s , even though he was underage. “She said, ‘Maybe you’ll meet your people here,’” he recalled.

“I did find my people — bohemia!” he said.

Since those days, Mr. Waters has become an unofficial spokesman for all things Baltimore, which was one of The New York Times’s 52 Places to Go in 2024 . The city has embraced him, too. It honored him with an official day, Feb. 7, 1985 (it was a one-off), and the all-gender restrooms at the Baltimore Museum of Art, the institution to which he has bequeathed his sizable art collection , are named for him.

Though Mr. Waters has apartments in San Francisco and New York and spends summers in Provincetown, Mass., he lives primarily in North Baltimore and has no plans to change that. “If I had to give up everywhere,” Mr. Waters said, “this is where I’d live.”

Here are his five favorite places in Baltimore.

1. The Charles Theater

A neon marquee graces the brick facade of the Charles Theater . First opened as an all-newsreel cinema, the Charles now screens primarily independent movies and hosts periodic revival series. Mr. Waters has a special place in his heart for the theater, which his friend Pat Moran managed for years. “That’s where ‘ Polyester ’ opened,” Mr. Waters said, referring to his 1981 film. A major Easter egg awaited those at the premiere, since a scene in the film had been shot at the theater. In the movie, the heroine’s philandering husband owns a porn theater, and a flashback shows its exterior. “‘My Burning Bush’ was the title on the marquee,” Mr. Waters said, and people were coming out “zipping up their zippers.”

2. Peter’s Inn

When he first started visiting Peter’s Inn , Mr. Waters knew it as Motorcycle Pete’s, after the owner, his friend Peter Denzer. “He was a biker, and he was in ‘ Desperate Living ,’” Mr. Waters said, recalling his 1977 dark comedy. “He played one of Edith Massey’s goons.” Mr. Denzer later sold the place to Bud and Karin Tiffany, who transformed it from dive bar to locally sourced eatery. Today, Mr. Waters said, “it still looks like a biker bar,” but “the food is absolutely amazing.” A mounted blue marlin hangs behind the bar (Mr. Tiffany caught it on his 16th birthday, Ms. Tiffany said) and Ms. Tiffany writes the menu by hand. But Peter’s also makes a mean martini and serves a pâté — beloved by Mr. Waters — that arrives in a lidded glass container, its smooth surface artfully arrayed with herbs and fruit.

3. Club Charles

With its Art Deco sign, neon-bathed interior and well-curated jukebox (including David Bowie and Björk), the seven-decade-old Club Charles — across the street from the Charles Theater — is “still the coolest place in Baltimore,” Mr. Waters said. He loves the no-nonsense bartenders (“They’ve been there forever and ever”) and “unpredictable” patrons. Mr. Waters started frequenting the bar in the 1970s, when it was called the Wigwam and had a rough reputation. The owner, an Indigenous woman named Esther Martin , ran it, Mr. Waters said, buzzing in only people who didn’t seem rich: “It was Studio 54 in reverse.” Once, Mr. Waters recalled, “I saw somebody bite somebody’s nose off in there. It was scary. But it was jumping!”

4. Metro Baltimore

On any given night at the performance space Metro Baltimore — formerly known as the Metro Gallery — you never know quite what to expect. Which is why Mr. Waters loves it. In February, he attended “anti-Valentine’s gay night,” a dance party crowded with young L.G.B.T.Q. people and heavy metal fans. “So the gay people there are the ones that do not fit in gay bars,” Mr. Waters said. “I’m one of them. The first time I ever went to a gay bar, I thought, ‘I might be queer, but I ain’t this,’ because I was looking for bohemia.” The Metro, he said, feels like a modern bohemia. The program (think acts with names like LustSickPuppy and Pansy Division ) is as motley as the crowd, and includes drag nights, record releases and film premieres.

5. Atomic Books

As an author, screenwriter and former bookstore employee, Mr. Waters knows his bookshops. Atomic Books stands out, he says, because it is “one of the only places where you can get big fashion magazines from all over the world,” and also has “a huge true-crime section.” In it, classics such as “ Helter Skelter, ” about the 1969 Charles Manson murders, sit alongside cult favorites like “ Panzram ,” about the early-20th-century serial killer Carl Panzram. The shop, whose motto is “Literary Finds for Mutated Minds,” also carries a vast array of John Waters merchandise, and receives his fan mail. A bar in back serves local beer, cider and mead, including a Union Craft Brewing I.P.A. called Divine. It might be the perfect place to raise a glass and toast Mr. Waters’s cinematic diva who shares the beer’s name. And who knows whom you might meet in the aisles? “If you’re ever looking to score sexually, go to bookshops,” Mr. Waters advises. “You always meet smart people, and they’re cute.”

JACKSON COUNTY, MI – The sights and sounds of patriotic celebration will soon fill Jackson’s streets as people commemorate the country’s independence with cookouts, parades and - of course – firework displays.

Whether you’re looking to see the sky fill with multi-colored bursts by yourself or with friends or at a family gathering, here’s a listing of the best places to catch a firework show near Jackson this Fourth of July.

Cascades Falls Park

One of the biggest firework shows in Jackson, this popular annual gathering features a variety of pre-show festivities beginning 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 3. Fireworks typically launch at dusk Thursday night.

Admission for the event is $7 per adult and $5 for children ages 4 to 10 years old. Food vendors and live entertainment from the music group The New Rule can also be found at the event.

Independence Day in Jackson County isn’t complete without the sight of firework bursts reflecting off one of the area’s many beautiful lakes, and Grass Lake is one of them.

Holiday festivities in Grass Lake begin with a parade at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 4. Lineup for parade participants begins at Grass Lake High School, 11500 Warrior Trail, and ends at Grass Lake County Park, 400 N. Lake Road.

Following the parade, the Grass Lake Sportsman Club will host its annual chicken barbecue at the park. Each meal costs $12. Registration for the annual Grass Lake Cardboard Boat Races begins at 1:30 p.m. at the park, with races on the lake beginning at 2:15 p.m.

Music will be playing at the park throughout the day, and fireworks over the lake begin at dusk.

Hanover-Horton

Fireworks are just one of many things bringing the patriotic holiday spirit to Hanover-Horton at this annual event.

The Hanover-Horton “Fourth of July Celebration” kicks off early with an all-ages co-ed volleyball tournament at 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 3. Events continue Thursday with a pancake breakfast, 5-mile run/5K walk and car show leading up to the Fourth of July parade starting at 11 a.m. Thursday at Heritage Park, 105 Fairview St.

Fireworks are set to follow the parade at dusk at the baseball diamonds on Allen Street.

Pleasant Lake

You can catch a bombastic fireworks display on one of the most beautiful lakes in Jackson County at 10 p.m. Friday, July 5, on Pleasant Lake, 4401 Styles Road.

In case of a weather-related cancelation, the firework show will be rescheduled for the same time Saturday, July 6.

Springport Speedway

This racing track near the outskirts of Jackson will host a “Freedom Celebration!” this weekend to honor the national holiday.

Springport Speedway, 23849 30 Mile Road in Springport, will be hosting races beginning at 7 p.m. Saturday, July 6. Fireworks begin right after the races.

Admission is $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $5 for kids ages 6 to 13 years old.

Dublin traffic LIVE: Animals on M50 and Malahide Castle delays expected with several gigs in capital

Expect a bit of gridlock around concert venues this evening - there's three major gigs on across the capital

A mixed bag of a Wednesday and welcome to the Dublin Live traffic blog for July 3 where we'll be bringing you the latest alongside LiveDrive on Dublin City FM .

At the moment things are moving relatively well across the capital. One of the busiest points right now is around Finglas Road from Tolka river bridge to Clearwater shopping centre - it's taking about 15 minutes to clear.

The M50 is heavy northbound from Firhouse to Lucan. Southbound busy from Cherrywood through to Bray. Expect delays around Malahide Castle tonight as there's a gig on with attendees being urged to use public transport.

LiveDrive said: "Sza plays Malahide Castle. Attendees are being asked to use Malahide DART station or local bus services. The Dublin Bus concert express service is in operation. Cars are asked to enter via Kinsealy or the Swords Bypass. Limited parking must be booked in advance and enforcement is in place."

Two other gigs are taking place tonight - Stevie Nicks in the 3Arena and Gavin James at Trinity College. Expect delays around those areas.

LiveDrive said: "The collision remains in place on the N4 inbound approaching J2 (Liffey Valley). It's blocking the bus lane. Delays of 5 minutes from J4 (Newcastle)."

LiveDrive said: "There is a collision on the M50 southbound approaching J6 (Blanchardstown). It's blocking the auxiliary lane. Delays of 5 minutes from J5 (Finglas)."

Breakdown on M50

It's between Tallaght and Ballymount on the northbound side.

Animals on the M50

On the northbound side on the slip from the M50 to N11 at Junction 17 Shankill.

Debris on the M7

It's at Athgoe on the eastbound side. Affecting Lane 1 and Lane 2.

What to do for the concerts this evening

Stevie Nicks is in the 3Arena, so expect the usual concert delays around Dublin Port as this is going on.

Gavin James is in Trinity College. The best way to get there is by public transport.

CNN just named this Arizona city one of America's best towns to visit. Here's why

For many travelers, the ideal summer vacation spot offers unique character, an abundance of things to see and do, and little to no crowds.

That sentiment explains why CNN Travel compiled a new list of U.S. places where people can avoid "the elbow-to-elbow crowds of the big tourist cities." Its inaugural list of 10 cities includes one in Arizona, a popular stopover point on the way to the Grand Canyon.

CNN's list, called America's Best Towns to Visit in 2024, highlights smaller cities. Richmond, Virginia, was ranked No. 1 for its cultural and dining scenes and "intriguing" neighborhoods.

CNN's travel contributors selected the cities based on their attractions, dining, nightlife, culture, sense of identity, proximity to other interesting spots and wow factor.

New to the top 10 city for this year: a beloved restaurant chain arrived in April , and a West Coast flight from its airport is coming in the fall .

Why Flagstaff is one of CNN's America's Best Towns to Visit in 2024

Flagstaff, a northern Arizona city rich in ponderosa pine forests and overlooking the state's tallest mountain peak, is ranked No. 6 on CNN's list of America's Best Towns to Visit.

CNN's contributors gave Flagstaff high marks for its outdoor experiences, especially stargazing . They cited Flagstaff's status as an International Dark Sky City for its protection of the night sky from light pollution, as well as Lowell Observatory, the astronomy hub where Pluto was discovered in 1930.

They said the city's connection to outer space doesn't end there, with a nod to its proximity to Meteor Crater about 45 minutes east in Winslow. The natural landmark, one of The Arizona Republic's uniquely Arizona road trip destinations , preserves the site where a meteorite struck the Earth's surface about 50,000 years ago.

Flagstaff's proximity to Coconino National Forest and the San Francisco Peaks creates plentiful adventure opportunities, including skiing and snowboarding. Arizona Snowbowl at Humphreys Peak (elevation 12,633 feet), which CNN described as "ground zero for Flagstaff's winter sports scene," extended its season this year due to above-average snowfall, including its first-ever June dates .

Flagstaff is about 80 miles south of the Grand Canyon, one of America's most famous adventure spots.

Flagstaff is also a key stop on historic Route 66, where the city's historic downtown has evolved into a shopping, dining and entertainment hub.
