How the PGA Tour determines tee times and groupings each week
Every week on the PGA Tour, Tuesdays are typically when we find out about the tee times and groupings for that week's tournament.
Typically, we find out about the groupings, which are usually done in threesomes, for the first two rounds. (At some tournaments, we might only find out about the first round, with the field repairing after each round -- a luxury tournaments with small fields can afford.) Fans are always wondering how certain players seem to keep winding up with each other or how that awesome featured threesome was selected.
As it turns out, there are rules for where PGA Tour players are slotted in their first- and second-round groupings and tee times. It's a merit system based on a player's status on the PGA Tour. Basically, there are four buckets into which a player can fall for the first two rounds.
How PGA Tour tee times, groupings are determined for the first two rounds
The players who get the best tee times and land in featured groups are those who are PGA Tour winners, including major championship winners, The Players Championship and Tour Championship winners, those who have won World Golf Championships and those who have won official PGA Tour events in the last two seasons. PGA Tour life members -- those with at least 20 wins -- fall in this bucket, too. Also, players in the top 25 of the career PGA Tour money list. So, too, do players who sit in the top 20 of the Official World Golf Ranking, whether they're a PGA Tour member or not. After the US Open in June, players in the current top 20 in FedEx Cup points get in this group, too.
The next bucket is a subset of the first bucket, reserved for major winners, The Players winners and Tour Championship winners who did so at least five years prior to the current date. These players have to have competed in at least five PGA Tour events or a combined 10 PGA Tour, Web.com Tour and PGA Tour Champions events in the last year. This is also true for official tournament winners of official PGA Tour events who no longer fit in this bucket. Basically, you've proven yourself but haven't been in form for a while.
The third bucket is for players who finished in the top 125 in the prior season's FedEx Cup list, either as a member or non-member. Also eligible are players who have made at least 50 official-money PGA Tour cuts in their career and have competed in at least five PGA Tour events or a combined 10 PGA Tour, Web.com Tour and PGA Tour Champions events in the last year. Players ranked 21st through 50th in the Official World Golf Ranking, including non-members, also fall in this bucket.
The final bucket is everyone else, and they get the worst tee times.
Obviously the PGA Tour has created an incentive for players to improve their tee times if they win or have a great first half of the season. Players in the final bucket can move up to the third bucket if they reach a certain standing on the FedEx Cup points list through the Masters (top 60) and the US Open (top 100).
In the event there aren't enough players to round out each group for a tournament, players in the second bucket get bumped into the first based on their prior season finish in the FedEx Cup. Under that scenario, players can also move from the fourth bucket into the third bucket based on current season FedEx Cup points.
Players are then typically randomly placed together via draw (though featured groups are sometimes hand-picked with a wink and a nod), then slotted into tee times available for those buckets of players. If there is a two-tee start, each threesome will have a morning tee time and an afternoon tee time over the first two days . They will alternate starting holes each time, typically the first and 10th holes.
How PGA Tour tee times, groupings determined for third and final rounds
After the first two rounds and a 36-hole cut is made, the PGA Tour then determines pairings based solely on score through the preceding round. The lowest combined score from the preceding rounds goes out in the final pairing with the next-best (or tied) player. In the event of ties, the player who finished their round first goes out last (first in, last out, or FILO).
In the event a two-tee start is needed to complete weekend-round play, the tee sheet looks like a V of sorts, with the lowest scores going off last off the first tee and the worst scores going off last off the 10th tee. The middle of the field goes off first from both sets of tee boxes.

PGA Championship leaderboard: Sunday pairings, tee times, TV, live stream for final round
Can Brooks Koepka capture major No. 5?
He leads the PGA Championship entering Sunday's final round at Oak Hill Country Club in Rochester, New York, after shooting Saturday's best round, a 4-under 66. He has a one-shot lead on Viktor Hovland and Corey Conners, who each shot even-par 70s Saturday.
Koepka, a member of LIV Golf, won the 2018 and 2019 PGA Championships to go along with his back-to-back U.S. Open wins in 2017 and 2018.
"To win one would be fantastic," Koepka said. "I was just told that I think only Tiger (Woods) and Jack (Nicklaus) have won three (in the modern era), so that would be pretty special to be in a list or category with them."
Koepka was leading entering Sunday at this year's Masters, but ended up slipping to second to Jon Rahm.
"Learning what I learned at Augusta kind of helped today," Koepka said. "Like I said, I won’t do it again the rest of my career."

Masters champ Jackie Burke Jr. to be celebrated during Champions Dinner
Ben Crenshaw played nine holes on Sunday, and then met a group of media members near No. 9 green.
Crenshaw, who emcees the annual Champions Dinner , said he plans to celebrate two players on Tuesday evening: Jon Rahm and Jackie Burke Jr.
The 1956 Masters champion died Jan. 19, 10 days before his 101st birthday.
“Having views on things can get you in trouble,” Burke once said. “But if you agree with everybody you won’t get any dinners.”
Burke was the only past winner to pass since the 2023 tournament; to honor the Texan, here are five stories from his decorated life.

Masters 2023: Was Wednesday the Augusta National finale for Masters legends Carl Jackson and Ben Crenshaw?
Jackie Burke Jr. to be honored at Masters Champions Dinner
1. Nathaniel Crosby was raised in Hillsborough, California, but would stay for weeks at a time with Burke at Champions Golf Club in Houston. Crosby was the third child of Bing Crosby and Kathryn Grant Crosby, and the only one of Bing’s seven kids to have a golfer as a godfather.
At the 1964 Masters, Jackie posed for a photograph beneath the clubhouse Oak and placed one foot on a wooden stool. Burke inscribed the 8-by-10 and shipped it to California.
“To my godson Nathaniel,” Burke wrote. “I sure hope to see you here playing at the Masters one day.”
Seventeen years later, Crosby shocked the field by winning the 1981 United States Amateur and qualified for the Masters. That April, Crosby found a wooden stool, mimicked the pose and inscribed four words on the photograph.
“Got here, no problem,” Crosby wrote.
2. Burke opened Champions Golf Club in 1957, and the club immediately became his priority — sometimes at the expense of Augusta National.
In 1972, the Masters was to hold its first tournament since the death of Bobby Jones when Jackie declined his invitation. Chairman Clifford Roberts reached out to emphasize the importance of Tuesday’s dinner and, when Jackie didn’t budge, Ben Hogan phoned with a similar message.
It didn’t matter.
Champions was absent of a club manager and duties had been shouldered on Jackie.
“My wishes will be for another successful Masters,” Burke penned to Roberts. “With your guiding hand, it can’t miss.”
Two years earlier, following President Dwight Eisenhower's death in 1969, the United States Golf Association headed a fundraising initiative titled, “Golf’s Tribute to Ike.”
A briefing stated that no person had done more for golf than the 34th president, and Jones and Roberts were named project chairmen. The mission was to solicit a donation from every golfer in the country — an estimated 10 million — and proceeds would be shared between the Eisenhower Medical Center in Palm Desert and Eisenhower College in Seneca Falls.
Roberts messaged Jackie and requested that Burke generate enthusiasm within the membership of Champions; Jackie wouldn’t bite.
In a return letter, Burke said he conducts fundraisers for St. Joseph’s Hospital in Houston and the Walter Hagen Cancer Fund.
“Frankly, at this time I could not approach our members and ask for their support in the near future,” Burke responded to Chairman Roberts.
3. Ben Crenshaw recalled the first lesson he took from Burke when, midway through a backswing, Burke — a blackbelt in taekwondo — hardened a right fist into Ben’s chest.
Crenshaw buckled, took two backward steps, and gave his teacher a confused glance.
“What if that wind gets you?” Burke asked.
Afterward, Crenshaw and Burke marched to the first tee at Champions, where Jackie, spoken like a polished Marine, stated, “One of us is going down today and it ain’t going to be me.”
“He’s the only guy I’ve ever taken a lesson from where I wanted to show up in a catcher’s mask, a chest protector and some shin guards,” Crenshaw said at the 2000 roast of Jackie Burke.
4. Following his stint in the Marine Corps, Burke always carried a knife in his pocket.
And when a new member joined Champions, Jackie would present the golfer with a blade.
Steve Elkington, the 1995 PGA champion and member at Champions, was told of the importance of carrying a pocket knife.
“You see Elk,” Jackie advised. “When you’re in a hotel on the road, hold it in your hand. And if anyone jumps you on the way to your room, you cut (him). That way you’ll be able to trail him.”
5. Crenshaw and Burke were paired together at the 1978 Bing Crosby Pro-Am at Pebble Beach.
By then, Jackie hadn’t won on Tour in 15 years, but was invited to the Pro-Am to honor Bing, who had died in October.
It was the first year that Nathaniel Crosby had stepped forward as tournament host and Bing’s 16-year-old son had free reign of pairings.
Nathaniel chose Burke, his godfather, and asked Crenshaw and Mickey Van Gerbig, a scratch amateur from Seminole, to complete the foursome.
Crenshaw was the first to arrive at the Pebble Beach practice green that January and noticed Jackie approaching.
“What’s that putter there?” Ben asked.
Jackie took Crenshaw by the forearm and walked to the edge of the green. Burke explained that he had found a mallet blade Ram Zebra putter which made him roll the rock like 1956.
Jackie, wide eyed, looked at Ben and said, “When I get through with this putter they’re going to put it in a wooden box and they’re going to burn candles on both ends. People are going to walk by with a hand over their heart and say, ‘That was the best putter that’s ever been in competition.’”
Jackie began with humbling strolls of 78 and 83, and returned the third morning with a different stick.
“Where’s the putter?” Ben inquired.
Jackie, fuming, said, “The next zebra I see will be in the damn zoo.”

2024 Texas Open leaderboard, grades: Akshay Bhatia nets second PGA Tour win, last Masters invite in playoff
Bhatia's victory means the 2024 masters field is now official.
There was nothing stress-free about Akshay Bhatia's victory at the 2024 Texas Open despite how most of the week looked. Kickstarting his week with a 9-under 63 on Thursday, the lengthy left hander went wire-to-wire at TPC San Antonio for a playoff victory over Denny McCarthy at 20 under. By doing so, Bhatia became the third youngest winner to go wire-to-wire on the PGA Tour since 1983 behind Rory McIlroy at the 2011 U.S. Open and Jordan Spieth at the 2015 Masters.
Speaking of the Masters, Bhatia's victory marks his second in as many years, and it comes at a rather opportune time. Earning the final invitation into the 2024 Masters, the 22-year-old will drive down Magnolia Lane for the first time in his professional career and tee it up in only his second major championship. Bhatia's Masters debut comes a decade after qualifying and playing in the first-ever Drive, Chip and Putt competition at Augusta National.
Not only has Bhatia earned his chance to vie for the green jacket next week, he has solidified his playing privileges on the PGA Tour through the 2026 season. Bhatia will tee it up at the PGA Championship as well as the remaining signature events on the PGA Tour schedule.
"I just stuck to my game plan," Bhatia said. "I played great today. I kind of got the goal in mind today. Denny played unbelievable. You got to give him credit. It's hard because he's one of the best putters out here, and when you see him get hot, it's scary. I had a six-shot lead going into the back nine, and then all of sudden, we are tied going into 18 and then of course he makes that putt. Man, what a crazy crazy day."
Bhatia began the final round at TPC San Antonio in possession of a four-stroke lead -- tying Jake Knapp for the largest 54-hole margin this season. The lead grew to five with a birdie immediately out the gate and was pushed to half a dozen when Bhatia added his third birdie of the round on No. 4.
McCarthy attempted to apply some pressure on the front, but it proved ineffective as Bhatia went to the inward half with his six-stroke lead still intact. A punch finally landed on No. 10 when McCarthy connected from distance for his second birdie of the day and Bhatia failed to get up-and-down from long of the green cutting his lead to four. The drama ensued from there.
After making par on the 11th, McCarthy went unconscious and left Bhatia defenseless. Birdie after birdie came from the blade of McCarthy as he rattled off six in a row and within a blink of an eye, Bhatia's lead of six was cut to zero as the two men stood on the tee at the par-5 18th.
Both facing roughly 12-foot birdie bids, both connected and unleashed fist pumps after both players reached 20 under -- nine clear of McIlroy in third place. McCarthy's final putt in regulation was his 92nd of the week tying a PGA Tour record for fewest amounts of putts in a tournament while Bhatia's made waves for a completely different reason.
An update on Akshay Bhatia's shoulder injury. https://t.co/iYKkZXlTKc pic.twitter.com/U08UYGHmiX — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) April 7, 2024
Popping his shoulder out of his socket during his celebration, Bhatia called upon the services of his physiotherapist on the first playoff hole. With his ball in the fairway, Bhatia watched as McCarthy approached his third and chunked his wedge into the creek protecting the putting surface.
After getting his shoulder taped, Bhatia stepped to his and safely found the putting surface to all but secure his second PGA Tour victory and a trip to the Masters.
"This is awesome," Bhatia said. "It's hard to win out here as it showed today. My mom's birthday was on April 1, and her wish was to get in the Masters. I'm hoping I make her proud." Grade: A+
Here are the grades for the rest of the notables on the leaderboard at the 2024 Texas Open
3. Rory McIlroy (-11): Oh boy, here we go again. It was an ideal last start for McIlroy ahead of the Masters as he fired a final-round 66 and got the big numbers out of his system. Adhering to the swing advice of Butch Harmon, McIlroy made a conscious effort to eliminate the quick, aggressive left miss and took a huge step in the right direction in terms of his iron play. He ranked third in strokes gained approach thanks to gaining nearly four with his scoring clubs on Sunday alone. Grade: A
"I definitely feel like I'm in a better place than I was a few weeks ago," McIlroy said. "Through the Florida swing, there was just a lot of volatility in my game, some good, some bad, quite a few big numbers, so just trying to tidy that up. For me, I'm always going to be able to hit good shots, it's just how bad the bad ones are, and this week the bad ones were still in play and no too bad, and I was able to scramble well enough when I did hit a few poor ones. Again, overall much more pleased with where my game is compared to two or three weeks ago."
Rory McIlroy: bogey-free 66 today; his best final round leading into the Masters in 10 years. In 2014, he shot 65 on Sunday in Houston - finished T-8 the next week at Augusta. — Justin Ray (@JustinRayGolf) April 7, 2024
T7. Hideki Matsuyama (-8): The 2021 Masters champion is red hot. Matsuyama's last four starts now read: Win, T12, T6, T7. He was once again brilliant from tee to green -- ranking inside the top 20 in each metric -- but did not get as much as he would have liked out of the putter ranking first on the PGA Tour in strokes gained around the green and with his ball striking in tow, Matsuyama has to be on the short list of players who can win next week. Grade: A-
T10. Jordan Spieth (-6): This week featured just about everything from Spieth -- a hole-in-one, a gutter ball, plenty of birdies and plenty of mistakes. It all added up to a 6-under total for his first top-10 finish since the WM Phoenix Open and put an end to a mini dip in form. Spieth was insistent that his game was close on Thursday, and he flashed glimpses of what may be to come at Augusta National. He's driving the ball great (ranked fourth in strokes gained off tee), and his iron play was much sharper. Surprisingly, his short game has been rather meh in his last three starts, but that should change sooner rather than later. Grade: B
The Jordan Spieth Experience™️ https://t.co/15huJUWoYf pic.twitter.com/xrzHb4EE8f — PGA TOUR (@PGATOUR) April 7, 2024
T24. Max Homa (-4): After opening with a 3-under 69, Homa got stuck in the mud and played his next 54 holes in only 1 under. He came into this week needing to answer questions around his driver and he did just that with a couple really solid rounds from off the tee. His iron play is in a comfy spot, and it will need to continue to be if he expects to contend at the Masters for the first time in his career. Grade: C+
T75. Collin Morikawa (+5): Is it time to press the panic button on Morikawa? The two-time major champion made the cut on the number and wasn't able to do much with the opportunity finishing near the bottom of the weekend pack. Morikawa has now lost strokes on approach in three straight tournaments and hasn't clocked a top-five finish since the first week of the year at The Sentry. Without his iron play, Morikawa looks very (very) average. Grade: D
