What you need to visit St. Kitts and Nevis

Currently, only fully vaccinated travelers are allowed entry into St. Kitts and Nevis. The islands consider travelers to be fully vaccinated two weeks after receiving their second dose of a two-dose series (Pfizer, Moderna or AstraZeneca) or after a single-dose vaccine (Johnson & Johnson), according to the St. Kitts Tourism website. This does not apply to citizens or residents of the islands. Unvaccinated children under the age of 18 accompanied by fully vaccinated parents or guardians are also exempt.

Additionally, all visitors must show proof of a negative PCR test result within 72 hours before arriving in St. Kitts and Nevis, a hard copy of a required travel authorization form, vaccination record card and cash for taxi fare (as only approved taxis are allowed to transport travelers to their accommodations). Travelers to Nevis will be transferred via a certified COVID-19 sea taxi.

COVID-19 PCR tests must be taken by nasopharyngeal sample. Self-samples, rapid tests, or home tests will be considered invalid.

As of Oct. 12, within 24 hours of arriving to St. Kitts and Nevis all international travelers staying at their "Travel Approved" hotel (see list of hotels below) will undergo a PCR test which will be administered on-site. The test must be taken by a Ministry of Health-approved medical professional and will cost $150 for non-nationals and non-residents and $100 for nationals and residents.

Upon receipt of a negative test result, visitors can integrate and participate in all open tours, visit attractions, and can travel throughout St. Kitts and Nevis. This requirement also applies to non-vaccinated children under the age of 18 traveling with fully vaccinated parents.

All visitors are required to "Vacation in Place" at their travel approved hotel where they may move freely about the property within and use any and all available amenities until they have a receipt of their negative test result.

How to get there

Flights to St. Kitts and Nevis (SKB) tend to be expensive, and only two airlines currently offer nonstop service from the U.S., American Airlines and Delta.

American Airlines has direct flights from New York (JFK) as well as twice-daily from its Miami (MIA) hub from Wednesdays through Sundays. Delta offers nonstop flights from Atlanta (ATL).

If you are booking for January round-trip from New York for a seat in the main cabin it will cost $644 or 40,000 points (+$75.27) roundtrip and $1,672 or 170,000 points (+$75.27) round trip for business class.

From Miami, in January, American Airlines also has basic economy , seats available for nonstop flights for $588 roundtrip or 34,500 points (+69.67). Main cabin will cost $668 roundtrip or 34,500 points (+$69.67) points and business class is $1,201 roundtrip or 114,500 (+$69.67).

Delta has cheaper economy nonstop flights from Atlanta at $473 or 34,000 points (+$70) roundtrip, $553 or 42,000 points (+70) for main cabin seats, $771 roundtrip or 61,000 (+70) for Comfort+ seats and $1,607 roundtrip or 158,000 points (+70) for first class seats in January.

Where to stay

Foreigners visiting St. Kitts and Nevis are limited to a list of seven hotels that have been preapproved by the government. The silver lining of this, though, is that the list includes some of our favorites, including three points hotels: the Park Hyatt St. Kitts , Four Seasons Nevis and the St. Kitts Marriott Beach Club . Other options include Paradise Beach and Royal St. Kitts Hotel.

If you plan on staying at the Four Seasons Nevis, you won't be able to use hotel points in the traditional sense, but you can get extra value and elite-like perks by booking through American Express Fine Hotels + Resorts , to which you're given access by holding either The Platinum Card® from American Express or The Business Platinum Card® from American Express.

Hilton's Koi Resort St. Kitts, part of the chain's Curio Collection was closed through Oct. 15 but since opening, the resort is currently sold out for the rest of 2021. Most January 2022 dates range from $145-200 per night or 42,000 to 60,000 points per night.

Related: Review of the Park Hyatt St. Kitts

If you want to use points while visiting, we love the Park Hyatt St. Kitts , which is a Category 7 property in the World of Hyatt program. You can book rooms for 30,000 points per night, for standard rooms or cash prices start at $754 per night for standard rooms in January.

If you don't already have World of Hyatt points, it's easy to get them. The program is a transfer partner of Chase Ultimate Rewards; you can transfer those points to Hyatt. The Chase Sapphire Preferred Card is offering a sign-up bonus of 60,000 points after you spend $4,000 in the first three months from account opening.

Related: Park Hyatt St. Kitts video review

If you're a Marriott loyalist, consider the St. Kitts Marriott Beach Club. It's a Category 6 property in Marriott's Bonvoy program, which is a great deal for a beachfront resort of this kind. A free night will run you 40,000 points for an off-peak night, 50,000 for a standard night and 60,000 for a peak night. This makes it a great candidate for use of certain Marriott co-branded cards like the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless Credit Card.

Bottom line

St. Kitts and Nevis have done well in the fight against the coronavirus. The clear guidelines make it easy for international visitors to enjoy everything this destination has to offer.

The designated hotels for international tourists include some of the best on the islands — and there are plentiful ways to get there using points and miles.

Learn actions you can take to stay healthy and safe on your trip. Vaccines cannot protect you from many diseases in Saint Kitts and Nevis, so your behaviors are important.

Eat and drink safely

Food and water standards around the world vary based on the destination. Standards may also differ within a country and risk may change depending on activity type (e.g., hiking versus business trip). You can learn more about safe food and drink choices when traveling by accessing the resources below.

  • Choose Safe Food and Drinks When Traveling
  • Water Treatment Options When Hiking, Camping or Traveling
  • Global Water, Sanitation and Hygiene | Healthy Water
  • Avoid Contaminated Water During Travel

You can also visit the Department of State Country Information Pages for additional information about food and water safety.

Prevent bug bites

Bugs (like mosquitoes, ticks, and fleas) can spread a number of diseases in Saint Kitts and Nevis. Many of these diseases cannot be prevented with a vaccine or medicine. You can reduce your risk by taking steps to prevent bug bites.

What can I do to prevent bug bites?

  • Cover exposed skin by wearing long-sleeved shirts, long pants, and hats.
  • Use an appropriate insect repellent (see below).
  • Use permethrin-treated clothing and gear (such as boots, pants, socks, and tents). Do not use permethrin directly on skin.
  • Stay and sleep in air-conditioned or screened rooms.
  • Use a bed net if the area where you are sleeping is exposed to the outdoors.

What type of insect repellent should I use?

  • FOR PROTECTION AGAINST TICKS AND MOSQUITOES: Use a repellent that contains 20% or more DEET for protection that lasts up to several hours.
  • Picaridin (also known as KBR 3023, Bayrepel, and icaridin)
  • Oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE) or para-menthane-diol (PMD)
  • 2-undecanone
  • Always use insect repellent as directed.

What should I do if I am bitten by bugs?

  • Avoid scratching bug bites, and apply hydrocortisone cream or calamine lotion to reduce the itching.
  • Check your entire body for ticks after outdoor activity. Be sure to remove ticks properly.

What can I do to avoid bed bugs?

Although bed bugs do not carry disease, they are an annoyance. See our information page about avoiding bug bites for some easy tips to avoid them. For more information on bed bugs, see Bed Bugs .

For more detailed information on avoiding bug bites, see Avoid Bug Bites .

Stay safe outdoors

If your travel plans in Saint Kitts and Nevis include outdoor activities, take these steps to stay safe and healthy during your trip.

  • Stay alert to changing weather conditions and adjust your plans if conditions become unsafe.
  • Prepare for activities by wearing the right clothes and packing protective items, such as bug spray, sunscreen, and a basic first aid kit.
  • Consider learning basic first aid and CPR before travel. Bring a travel health kit with items appropriate for your activities.
  • If you are outside for many hours in heat, eat salty snacks and drink water to stay hydrated and replace salt lost through sweating.
  • Protect yourself from UV radiation : use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15, wear protective clothing, and seek shade during the hottest time of day (10 a.m.–4 p.m.).
  • Be especially careful during summer months and at high elevation. Because sunlight reflects off snow, sand, and water, sun exposure may be increased during activities like skiing, swimming, and sailing.
  • Very cold temperatures can be dangerous. Dress in layers and cover heads, hands, and feet properly if you are visiting a cold location.

Stay safe around water

  • Swim only in designated swimming areas. Obey lifeguards and warning flags on beaches.
  • Practice safe boating—follow all boating safety laws, do not drink alcohol if driving a boat, and always wear a life jacket.
  • Do not dive into shallow water.
  • Do not swim in freshwater in developing areas or where sanitation is poor.
  • Avoid swallowing water when swimming. Untreated water can carry germs that make you sick.
  • To prevent infections, wear shoes on beaches where there may be animal waste.

Keep away from animals

Most animals avoid people, but they may attack if they feel threatened, are protecting their young or territory, or if they are injured or ill. Animal bites and scratches can lead to serious diseases such as rabies.

Follow these tips to protect yourself:

  • Do not touch or feed any animals you do not know.
  • Do not allow animals to lick open wounds, and do not get animal saliva in your eyes or mouth.
  • Avoid rodents and their urine and feces.
  • Traveling pets should be supervised closely and not allowed to come in contact with local animals.
  • If you wake in a room with a bat, seek medical care immediately. Bat bites may be hard to see.

All animals can pose a threat, but be extra careful around dogs, bats, monkeys, sea animals such as jellyfish, and snakes. If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, immediately:

  • Wash the wound with soap and clean water.
  • Go to a doctor right away.
  • Tell your doctor about your injury when you get back to the United States.

Consider buying medical evacuation insurance. Rabies is a deadly disease that must be treated quickly, and treatment may not be available in some countries.

Reduce your exposure to germs

Follow these tips to avoid getting sick or spreading illness to others while traveling:

  • Wash your hands often, especially before eating.
  • If soap and water aren’t available, clean hands with hand sanitizer (containing at least 60% alcohol).
  • Don’t touch your eyes, nose, or mouth. If you need to touch your face, make sure your hands are clean.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your sleeve (not your hands) when coughing or sneezing.
  • Try to avoid contact with people who are sick.
  • If you are sick, stay home or in your hotel room, unless you need medical care.

Avoid sharing body fluids

Diseases can be spread through body fluids, such as saliva, blood, vomit, and semen.

Protect yourself:

  • Use latex condoms correctly.
  • Do not inject drugs.
  • Limit alcohol consumption. People take more risks when intoxicated.
  • Do not share needles or any devices that can break the skin. That includes needles for tattoos, piercings, and acupuncture.
  • If you receive medical or dental care, make sure the equipment is disinfected or sanitized.

Know how to get medical care while traveling

Plan for how you will get health care during your trip, should the need arise:

  • Carry a list of local doctors and hospitals at your destination.
  • Review your health insurance plan to determine what medical services it would cover during your trip. Consider purchasing travel health and medical evacuation insurance.
  • Carry a card that identifies, in the local language, your blood type, chronic conditions or serious allergies, and the generic names of any medications you take.
  • Some prescription drugs may be illegal in other countries. Call Saint Kitts and Nevis’s embassy to verify that all of your prescription(s) are legal to bring with you.
  • Bring all the medicines (including over-the-counter medicines) you think you might need during your trip, including extra in case of travel delays. Ask your doctor to help you get prescriptions filled early if you need to.

Many foreign hospitals and clinics are accredited by the Joint Commission International. A list of accredited facilities is available at their website ( www.jointcommissioninternational.org ).

In some countries, medicine (prescription and over-the-counter) may be substandard or counterfeit. Bring the medicines you will need from the United States to avoid having to buy them at your destination.

Select safe transportation

Motor vehicle crashes are the #1 killer of healthy US citizens in foreign countries.

In many places cars, buses, large trucks, rickshaws, bikes, people on foot, and even animals share the same lanes of traffic, increasing the risk for crashes.

Be smart when you are traveling on foot.

  • Use sidewalks and marked crosswalks.
  • Pay attention to the traffic around you, especially in crowded areas.
  • Remember, people on foot do not always have the right of way in other countries.

Riding/Driving

Choose a safe vehicle.

  • Choose official taxis or public transportation, such as trains and buses.
  • Ride only in cars that have seatbelts.
  • Avoid overcrowded, overloaded, top-heavy buses and minivans.
  • Avoid riding on motorcycles or motorbikes, especially motorbike taxis. (Many crashes are caused by inexperienced motorbike drivers.)
  • Choose newer vehicles—they may have more safety features, such as airbags, and be more reliable.
  • Choose larger vehicles, which may provide more protection in crashes.

Think about the driver.

  • Do not drive after drinking alcohol or ride with someone who has been drinking.
  • Consider hiring a licensed, trained driver familiar with the area.
  • Arrange payment before departing.

Follow basic safety tips.

  • Wear a seatbelt at all times.
  • Sit in the back seat of cars and taxis.
  • When on motorbikes or bicycles, always wear a helmet. (Bring a helmet from home, if needed.)
  • Avoid driving at night; street lighting in certain parts of Saint Kitts and Nevis may be poor.
  • Do not use a cell phone or text while driving (illegal in many countries).
  • Travel during daylight hours only, especially in rural areas.
  • If you choose to drive a vehicle in Saint Kitts and Nevis, learn the local traffic laws and have the proper paperwork.
  • Get any driving permits and insurance you may need. Get an International Driving Permit (IDP). Carry the IDP and a US-issued driver's license at all times.
  • Check with your auto insurance policy's international coverage, and get more coverage if needed. Make sure you have liability insurance.
  • Avoid using local, unscheduled aircraft.
  • If possible, fly on larger planes (more than 30 seats); larger airplanes are more likely to have regular safety inspections.
  • Try to schedule flights during daylight hours and in good weather.

Medical Evacuation Insurance

If you are seriously injured, emergency care may not be available or may not meet US standards. Trauma care centers are uncommon outside urban areas. Having medical evacuation insurance can be helpful for these reasons.

Healthy Travel Packing List

Use the Healthy Travel Packing List for Saint Kitts and Nevis for a list of health-related items to consider packing for your trip. Talk to your doctor about which items are most important for you.

Why does CDC recommend packing these health-related items?

It’s best to be prepared to prevent and treat common illnesses and injuries. Some supplies and medicines may be difficult to find at your destination, may have different names, or may have different ingredients than what you normally use.

If you are not feeling well after your trip, you may need to see a doctor. If you need help finding a travel medicine specialist, see Find a Clinic . Be sure to tell your doctor about your travel, including where you went and what you did on your trip. Also tell your doctor if you were bitten or scratched by an animal while traveling.

For more information on what to do if you are sick after your trip, see Getting Sick after Travel .

St. Kitts & Nevis Will Only Allow Fully Vaccinated Travelers to Visit

And even after clearing all entry hurdles, travelers will have to stay within the confines of approved resorts.

aerial view of sea and cityscape against sky

Especially when it comes to international travel, the landscape is still quite rugged. There are countries where entry requirements are slightly more forgiving ( Greece , for example, requires either proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test). There are countries that will let in anyone (Mexico, Dominican Republic). And then there are countries with stricter protocols in place ( take France : while vaccinated Americans are permitted to enter, they will need to accompany their vaccine card with proof of a negative PCR test).

Now, St. Kitts & Nevis, the idyllic pair of islands in the Caribbean , has implemented even more stringent entry rules. Fueled by a recent cluster of coronavirus cases, the dual-island nation recently announced that not only must travelers be fully vaccinated and provide proof of a negative PCR test taken at least 72 hours before arrival, they will also have to "vacation in place," meaning remain within the confines of their resort for nine days. The approved list of hotels includes the Marriott and Park Hyatt on St. Kitts and the Four Seasons and Golden Rock Inn on Nevis. Those staying longer need to be retested on Day 9, and only when they've received a negative result can they move about the islands and go to shops and restaurants. There is also a curfew in place from 11 p.m.-5 a.m.

While it's tempting to treat a vaccine card as the golden ticket to anywhere on Earth, these new restrictions imposed by St. Kitts & Nevis are a reminder that there will still be much planning, and caution, required for any type of travel—also, get travel insurance.

Nevis may be small and less developed than big sister St. Kitts, but this 35.9-square-mile gem in the Leeward Islands has a ton to offer travelers. For vacationers keen to escape the throngs of sun-seekers in tourist-trodden Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, and the Bahamas, it provides an unspoiled slice of paradise that brims with natural beauty, history, warm hospitality, and relaxed vibes.

The consistently warm temperatures and sunny days offer picture-perfect weather for taking advantage of the many outdoor activities. The primary attraction for many hikers and cyclists, Nevis Peak steals the show. Travelers can explore popular offshore dive sites and admire the Georgian-style architecture in the capital city of Charlestown or unwind with sandy beaches, thermal hot springs, and breezy resort pools. Foodies love Nevis because it’s among the most exciting food destinations in the Caribbean . Fun fact: Nevis is also the birthplace of many celebrities, athletes, and historical figures — including Alexander Hamilton.

Here are the best things to eat, see, and do on Nevis, according to local experts.

Courtesy of Four Seasons

Four Seasons Resort Nevis

Poised on Pinney's Beach, the Four Seasons Resort Nevis stands out as a luxurious yet laid-back option that’s particularly well-suited for families with three outdoor pools, four restaurants, a bar, tennis, golf, a kids club, and a spa. The accommodations range from well-appointed rooms to spacious villas that sleep groups in comfort and style.

Paradise Beach Nevis

Travelers who enjoy the privacy of a house and the perks of a resort will love Paradise Beach Nevis , a member of Small Luxury Hotels of the World that’s a shell’s throw from the soft sand and shimmering sea. Ideal for families or groups, the vacation-worthy villas come in configurations of two, three, and four bedrooms and have kitchens and pools. The friendly concierge team is always happy to arrange excursions, dinner reservations, and activities.

Best Things to Do on Nevis

Pinney's beach.

Beautiful beaches are top of mind for most travelers visiting the Caribbean. Pinney’s Beach looks like a postcard with white sand, turquoise water, and swaying palm trees. It’s also home to some bars (hello, rum punch) and casual restaurants for when you need some sustenance between swimming and sunning.

Nevis Peak rises 3,232 feet above sea level and is one of the most popular attractions for active travelers on the island. “With the help of ropes, branches, and an experienced guide, the challenging climb to the top is well worth it for stunning panoramas,” says Mellissa Seabrookes, guest services manager at the Four Seasons Resort Nevis .

Nevis Botanical Gardens

Not far from the capital of Charlestown, Nevis Botanical Gardens teems with tropical flora and exudes an oasis-like environment. Walking around the fragrant flowers, leafy shrubs, orchid terraces, lily ponds, and fountains feels like stepping inside a movie set for a vacation flick.

The natural beauty of Nevis never ends, but it’s not all visible at first glance since so much of the island is hilly and shrouded in jungle. “ATV Tours take adventurers off the beaten track through dirt roads to discover far-flung corners of the island you might not see otherwise,” says ToursByLocals Nevis guide Janeel Boon .

Museum of Nevis History

For history buffs and fans of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Broadway musical, Seabrookes suggests visiting the Museum of Nevis History in Charlestown, which sits on the same property as the old house where Alexander Hamilton was born.

Layne Kennedy/Getty Images

Sunshine's Beach Bar & Grill

Located just steps down the beach from the Four Seasons Resort Nevis, Sunshine's Beach Bar & Grill is a favorite of residents and visitors alike with great food, cocktails, and a lively atmosphere. “The grilled local spiny lobster, fish, shrimp, chicken, and ribs are served with garden salad and seasoned rice,” says Seabrookes. “And it’s famous for a signature rum punch called ‘Killer Bees.’”

Passions Bar & Grill

“While it’s hard to pick favorites when there’s so much great food on the island, I really like Passions Bar & Grill in the countryside of Nevis,” says Boon. “It’s a place of beauty and authentic tastes with fantastic food, a friendly staff, and an idyllic location.” The fresh fish and pork ribs are always crowd pleasers.

For the perfect place to soak in the coastal Caribbean vibes, Boon recommends Drift . It’s a wonderful island restaurant perched right by the ocean. While savoring a lovely meal of fish cakes, coconut shrimp, and West Indian curry — or maybe a burger with secret sauce — you can see and hear the gentle turquoise waves. It’s also a gorgeous spot for golden hour cocktails.

A hidden gem tucked away in the rainforest of historic Hamilton Estate, Banana’s oozes charm and eye-catching views. Of course, it’s not just the enchanting environs that entice diners. The food is some of the best on the island. “The menu spotlights a delectable seasonal array of unforgettable Caribbean-meets-European dishes,” says Seabrookes.

One of the top-rated restaurants on the island for years, The Rocks at Golden Rock Inn infuses Caribbean flavors with eclectic global flair. The artfully plated fresh-caught fish, lobster, crab cakes, and conch chowder paired with rum punch and the ambiance of an alfresco dining deck overlooking the sea keep diners coming back for more.

Nevis enjoys a warm, tropical climate that’s cooled by trade winds. Tourism peaks during the dry season, which spans from December through April. The period between Christmas and New Year is particularly popular thanks to Carnival, also known as Sugar Mas, with vibrant celebrations involving steel drums, dancing, and food. The crowds thin and hotel rates drop in May and June. Like many Caribbean islands, it’s best to avoid hurricane season (June through November) when the weather can be unpredictable and many businesses close.

The vast majority of travelers will fly into Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw International Airport (SKB) on St. Kitts. From there, it’s a short water taxi or ferry to Nevis. It’s also possible to hop on a small plane to Vance W. Amory International Airport (NEV).

Most people opt to rent a car to get around Nevis. Moped and bicycle rentals are available, and taxis also operate on the island.

ST KITTS AND NEVIS PURSUING MORE EFFICIENT ENTRY PROTOCOLS FOR INCOMING TRAVELLERS

SKNISEditor

RLB INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, ST. KITTS

Basseterre, St. Kitts, December 03, 2021 (SKNIS):  The National COVID-19 Task Force is working with port officials, health authorities and other stakeholders to review the entry protocols for air travellers.

The task force’s chair Abdias Samuel said that officials recently performed a walk-through of the R. L. Bradshaw International Airport as they seek to enhance the efficiency of the process and processing of incoming travellers.

“We have heard the concerns of the hoteliers, our citizens, and also some of the guests,” he said at the December 01, 2021, COVID-19 Briefing by the National Emergency Operations Centre.

He added that representatives from border protection agencies are also considering the matter to identify and eliminate processes where necessary. The objective to speed up incoming passenger processing, however, will not undermine the efforts of port surveillance by health authorities.

Mr. Samuel stated that officials would remain vigilant in efforts to screen incoming travellers for COVID-19.

“Yes we want changes. Yes, we are ready to absorb some more risks but let me just notify you of this. We are going to have three critical barriers to help us in buffering the protection of the COVID-19 virus,” he said.

The protective barriers referenced by Mr. Samuel are the comprehensive verifying process for incoming travellers. This process involves officials from the Ministries of National Security, and Health, as well as the Department of Immigration and Her Majesty’s Customs and Excise Department. The second tier of defence is the robust port health surveillance system that is in place. The third tier of protection involves the procedures of the airlines to scrutinize travel and other related documents of passengers.

Mr. Samuel encouraged persons to be patient as the process is streamlined.
