Dhananjay Regmi appointed CEO of Nepal Tourism Board

Published On: January 29, 2020 08:19 AM NPT By: Muna Sunuwar  | @TheMunaSun

Dhananjay Regmi appointed CEO of Nepal Tourism Board

KATHMANDU, Jan 29: Dhananjay Regmi has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Nepal Tourism Board (NTB).

He will helm the country's national tourism organization for four years.

A meeting of board of directors of NTB held on Tuesday decided to pick Regmi for the top post at NTB from a list of three candidates shortlisted by a selection committee headed by Ghanashyam Upadhyaya – a joint secretary at the tourism ministry.

The committee had forwarded three names – Regmi, Deepak Bastakoti and Hikmat Singh Ayer – to the board of directors on January 17 itself. But the board meeting was repeatedly postponed citing busy schedule of board members and tourism secretary Kedar Bahadur Adhikari who chairs the board. The appointment process lingered for more than a week due to alleged clash of political interests.

The NTB on December 4 had invited applications from candidates aged between 35 and 60 with a Master's Degree from recognized universities for the post. Work experience of a minimum of 10 years in tourism sector was the other criterion.

Altogether, 17 applicants had applied for the post. The selection sub-committee had shortlisted nine of them – Dhananjay Regmi, Dipak Bastakoti, Hikmat Singh Aiyer, Deepak Raj Joshi, Bachchu Narayan Shrestha, Kashiraj Bhandari, Nabin Pokhrel, Rohini Prasad Khanal, and Santosh Bikram Thapa – and invited them to make presentations and interview.

Regmi has been appointed CEO of NTB after nearly four months since the Visit Nepal Year 2020 campaign began. His main challenge will be to meet the target of welcoming 2 million visitors in 2020.

WHO IS DHANANJAY REGMI?  Dhananjay Regmi, a mountain geomorphologist and glaciologist, obtained his PhD in Environmental Earth Science from the Graduate School of Environmental Earth Science, Hokkaido University, Japan, in 2006. He has been working as an adjunct professor at the Central Department of Geography and Environmental Science at Tribhuvan University, and also acting as a vice-chairperson of Kathmandu-based Nepal Geographical Society. Regmi also served as Glaciologist and Glacier Lake Expert for the Imja Lake Lowering project. He is also the chairperson of a trekking outfitter Himalayan Research Expedition and The Himalayan Research Center, Nepal. Regmi will have to resign from all the positions he is holding before assuming the office of NTB.

Nepal achieves record-high influx of tourists in March, the highest in last four years

KATHMANDU, April 2 -- The year-on-year tourists' arrival surged 28.90 percent last month with 128,167 visitors

Nepal's tourism industry seems to have bounced back with a notable number of foreigners arriving via air routes last month. According to Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), the number of foreign visitors in March surged by 28.90 percent compared to the same period of last year.

The NTB reported that 128,167 tourists from various countries entered Nepal by air in March alone. The inflow of tourists in the review month was a record high in the past four years. In March 2023, the number of tourists who visited Nepal stood at 99,426. This does not include the tourists visiting Nepal through land routes.

In the three months of January-March, Nepal welcomed a total of 304,693 air travelers. In January, the number was 79,100 while in February, it stood at 97,426.

According to the NTB, the tourism market has started to witness a notable growth with an increase in the inflow of visitors. Maniraj Lamichhane, director of the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), said the notable surge in the numbers shows a sign of the recovery of the sector. The country's tourism business suffered largely due to the impacts of the COVID-19 after 2020.

According to tourism entrepreneurs, it is a good sign that the first month of the commencement of the tourist season has seen a notable increase in the influx of foreign tourists to Nepal. The months of March, April, and May traditionally see a surge in tourism activities in Nepal, with many visitors coming for trekking and mountain climbing.

Last month, the largest group of tourists came from India, totaling 30,698. The figure was 25,911 in the corresponding month last year. Likewise, the Chinese visitors also increased 4.59 percent to 12,093 in March.

Among the visitors from third countries, 10,763 individuals came from the USA, 7,241 from Britain, 5,741 from Sri Lanka, 5,255 from Germany, 4,567 from Thailand, 4,345 from Australia, 3,240 from France, while 3,131 individuals were from Myanmar in the review month.

The government met the target of welcoming more than 1 million tourists in the country in 2023. Previously in 2019, a total of 1,197,191 individuals had visited the mountainous country.

Due to the impact of the pandemic, the number fell straight to 230,085 visitors in 2020. The number further shrunk to 149,833 visitors in 2021. The number took an upward leap in 2022, with the number of influx of tourists in the country recorded at 614,148.

The celebratory atmosphere resonated with a collective sense of accomplishment and optimism, setting the stage for Nepal's continued prominence on the global tourism map

In a momentous celebration marking the 25th anniversary of the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), an array of dignitaries, including previous NTB chairpersons, ministers, representatives from tourism organizations, consuls, national and international guests, and diplomats, gathered for a reflective event on the progress and challenges within Nepal's dynamic tourism sector.

The commemorative event, held at a prestigious venue, showcased the rich cultural heritage of Nepal with vibrant cultural performances, felicitations, and the unveiling of the eagerly awaited In-Focus annual magazine. The highlight of the evening was a captivating promotional video that encapsulated the diverse beauty and attractions of the country.

Chief Guest Sudan Kirati, the Ministry of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, set an optimistic tone for the evening by recognizing the collaborative efforts that have propelled Nepal's tourism sector forward. Kirati emphasized the importance of preserving the authentic Nepali essence in tourism, urging for immersive experiences that showcase local traditions , culture, and unique practices. While commending infrastructure advancements, Kirati also voiced concerns about emigration issues and stressed the need for organized development to enhance overall living standards.

nepal tourism board director

Dhananjay Regmi, the CEO of NTB, expressed gratitude and highlighted the remarkable achievements of the tourism sector, including surpassing the target of 1 million tourists. He joyfully noted an 85% rebound from the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, a feat globally applauded. Regmi underscored the significance of diversifying tourism aspects, emphasizing LGBTQ inclusion and the incorporation of events like the Dragon Boat Festival and Yogi Summit. He passionately advocated for Nepal to be seen as a destination for all seasons and all ages, not limiting itself solely as a mountaineering destination. Regmi also proposed the exciting initiative of "Nepal Visit Year 2025" and expressed optimism for positive policy changes.

People Of Nepal

There are about 101 ethnic groups speaking over 92 languages in nepal..

The population of Nepal in 2019 is reportedly 29.7 million.  There are about 101 ethnic groups speaking over 92 languages. The distinction in caste and ethnicity is understood better with a view of the customary layout of the population. The official language of Nepal is Nepali which is spoken and understood by a majority of the population. The ethnic groups have their own mother tongues. English is taught in schools and many of them are English medium schools so a large portion of the population understands the language. Most private schools today teach in English.

Northern Himalayan People

The mountainous regions of Nepal are inhabited by Sherpas, Dolpa-pas, Lopas, Baragaonlis, Manangays. The Sherpas are mainly found in the east, Solu and Khumbu region; the Baragaonlis and Lopas live in the semi-desert areas of Upper and Lower Mustang in the rain-shadow area; the Manangays live in Manang district while the Dolpa-pas live in Dolpa district of west Nepal.

Middle Hills and Valley People

Several ethnic groups live in the middle hills and valleys. Among them are the Magars, Gurungs, Tamangs, Rais, Limbus, Thamis, Sunuwars, Newars, Thakalis, Chepangs, Brahmins, Chhetris and Thakuris, Damai, Sarki, Kami and Sunar.

Ethnic Diversity in the Kathmandu Valley

Kathmandu Valley represents a cultural melting pot of the country, where people from varied backgrounds have come together to form a diverse population. The natives of the Kathmandu Valley are the Newars. Although Newars are either Hindus or Buddhists, their culture is vastly different from the rest of the Nepali people. Their rituals, food and festivals are unique to them. Newars of Kathmandu Valley were predominantly traders or farmers by occupation.

Tarai People

The main ethnic groups in the Tarai are Tharus, Darai, Kumhal, Rajbangsi, Bote, Majhi and other groups. They speak north Indian dialects like Maithili and Bhojpuri. Owing to the fertile plains of the Tarai, most inhabitants subsist on agriculture. There are, however, some occupational castes like Majhi (fisherman), Kumhal (potter) and Danuwar (cart driver).

Nepal’s New Law Requires All Foreign Trekkers to Hire a Guide

The legislation prohibits visiting hikers from exploring the country’s trails by themselves

One of the world’s most popular backpacking destinations has created new rules governing the trails. Starting April 1, tourists traveling to Nepal must hire a licensed guide or porter before trekking through the country’s wilderness, news agency ANI reports .

The Nepal Tourism Board announced the change on Friday, March 3, citing safety concerns for the sweeping new regulation.

“This decision has been made for the tourists’ benefit. While going on solo treks, tourists often get lost and might face insecurities,” Nepal Tourism Board director Maniraj Lamichhane told ANI.

The board has also increased the price of its Trekkers Information Management System (TIMS) card, a permit that all hikers in Nepal must obtain, The Kathmandu Post reports . Beginning in April, residents of South Asian countries must pay 1,000 rupees ($7.63 USD) per solo hiker, up from 600 rupees ($4.58 USD). Other foreign trekkers must pay 2,000 rupees per solo hiker ($15.26 USD), which is double the previous fee of 1,000 rupees.

In 2019, the Nepal Tourism Board issued more than 46,000 TIMS cards for solo hikers according to the newspaper. The COVID-19 pandemic hit the country’s trekking sector hard, with fewer than 20,000 TIMS cards issued in 2022.

The move effectively prevents foreign travelers from hiking alone in Nepal, and it could majorly impact Nepal’s adventure tourism industry, The National reports . Some of the country’s most popular trekking routes—Annapurna Base Camp, Ghorepani-Poon Hill, and Langtang Valley —are regularly frequented by solo hikers.

Rajan Dahal, owner of the Kathmandu-based company Global Adventure Trekking, told The National that he had mixed feelings about the change.

“On the one hand, it will enhance the safety of travelers and ensure they have a better understanding of the local culture and customs. On the other hand, it may increase the cost of travel. Ultimately, the effectiveness of the decision will depend on its implementation and how it is received by travelers,” Dahal said.

Nepali trekkers are exempt from the new rule, which Dahal said “may be due to several factors, including their familiarity with the local terrain and culture, their ability to communicate with locals, and the fact that they are not subject to the same travel restrictions as foreigners.”

The Trekking Agencies Association of Nepal, a group representing more than 2,000 guiding companies, has been lobbying for a “one-trekker, one-guide” system since 2012.

“Every year, some ten to 15 trekkers go missing, mostly [free independent travelers], and this is serious,” Nilhari Bastola, the association’s president, told The Kathmandu Post .

Bastola also said the new rule could bring jobs to approximately 40,000 Nepalis.

“It will generate jobs. That’s good for Nepal’s economy,” Bastola said.

Ambassador and promoters announced for the Pink Tourism International Conference

Ambassador and promoters announced for the Pink Tourism International Conference

Post Report

Maya Ko Pahichan Nepal (MKPN), an organisation working for matrimonial and legal rights of the LGBTQIA+ community, announced the ambassador and star promoters for the first Pink Tourism International Conference on Friday.

The event, supported by the Nepal Tourism Board (NTB), aims to promote Nepal as a welcoming destination for the LGBTQIA+ community under the theme ‘Yatra to Happiness’.

In a press meeting at NTB on Friday, MKPN announced digital content creator, model and fashion designer Rehan Shrestha as the ambassador for the conference. Shrestha was an ambassador of the ‘Visit Nepal Year 2020’ campaign, too.

Similarly, Parakram Rana and Dr Mausam Bohra, were announced as star promoters for the event. Dr Bohra, a successful female entrepreneur, aims to promote private sector support for pink tourism, emphasising its economic potential.

Rana, a content creator and blogger, highlighted Nepal’s reputation as a safe and welcoming destination for sexual and gender minorities, saying, “Nepal is a safe country. I invite you to come here (Nepal)."

Earlier, blogger Lex Limbu was announced as the star promoter for the international conference who will also be endorsing Nepal’s steps in LGBTQIA+ tourism.

Sunil Babu Pant, who was appointed Cultural Emissary (Ambassador) in January 2024 to promote international pink tourism, said that if tourists can be brought into Nepal through pink tourism, it will help boost Nepal’s GDP.

Maniraj Lamichhane, director of NTB, sharing the efforts to train 24 members of the sexual and gender minority community as trekking guides, with support from UNDP, stated that NTB is committed to inclusivity and making Nepal “a destination for all.”

Sahara Khadka, director of Pink Tiffany, remarked that Nepal has done a groundbreaking job for sexual and gender minority communities by organising the Pink Tourism International Conference for the first time. She further shared that the conference will help diminish the fear of hotels operated by the sexual and gender minority community going into loss.

Mythologist and author of more than 100 books, Devdutt Pattanaik and Paromita Vohra, founder of ‘Agents of Ishq’ will be the keynote speakers at the conference.

Online application for participation in the conference has been opened too. The online form can be filled out on MKPN’s website .
