Neko Case (born September 8, 1970) is an American singer, songwriter and musician, known for her work with the Canadian band The New Pornographer, hailing from Tacoma, Washington, U.S.

After leaving home age 15, Case became the drummer in a number of America’s Northwest's punk bands including the Del Logs and the Propanes. In 1994 the musician moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada to attend the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design, whilst continuing to play drums. Having graduated in 1998, Case was forced with a lack of visa to return to the U.S. and contributed lyrics to The New Pornographers debut album “Mass Romantic” – which became a surprise success. Coupled with her work with The New Pornographers, Case has worked with other Canadian acts The Sadies and Carolyn Mark, and has become a prominent female figure in Canadian music.

Neko Case released her country-inspired debut album “The Virginian” in 1997. The album features both original material as well as covers of artists including Ernest Tubb, Loretta Lyn and Queen. The musician’s sophomore album “Furnace Room Lullaby” was issued on Bloodshot Records in 2000 and earned considerable acclaim for its original and dark compositions. Case has subsequently released the EP “Canadian Amp” in 2001, after relocating to Chicago, Illinois, U.S., followed by the 2002 full-length “Blacklisted”. The album earned even stronger reviews than its predecessor and subsequently landed the singer-songwriter an opening slot for Nick Cave.

In between recording and touring with The New Pornographers on an irregular basis, Case released the live album “The Tigers Have Spoken” in 2004, and the full-length “Fox Confessor Brings the Flood” in 2006. The latter proved to be Case’s most accessible album to date and peaked at No. 54 on the Billboard 200. After a live album recorded at Austin City Limits entitled “Live from Austin, TX” and contributions to the New Pornographers album “Challengers”, Case returned to the studio at her home in Vermont, and released the album “Middle Cyclone” in March 2009. The album was followed up by “The Worse Things Get, The Harder I Fight, The Harder I Fight, The More I Love You” in 2013, which earned a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album in 2014.

Live reviews

I have loved Neko's music for many years, and I consider her show at the Aladdin in 2014 in Portland one of my favorite concerts ever.

Unfortunately, this show at Revolution Hall was really weird and ended badly. I kept thinking something was wrong with the sound, because the band and Neko didn't sound right. She kept motioning for them to turn her vocals up. Also, although the show began with some joking between her and Kelly - the backup vocalist - pretty quickly it seemed like they were not having a good time. Few jokes and multiple problems, including Neko not remembering how several different songs started on her guitar, Neko calling out someone in the audience for using their phone (we, the crowd, were all with her on that one. She did ask for no phones.)There was also a drunk woman in front of me that yelled "Happy Birthday Dan!" in between every song, which was very annoying. Neko had mentioned the drummer's birthday, but it didn't need to be said repeatedly. And Kelly complained of being cold, and Neko said that they were cold the night before, but the venue didn't do anything about it.

So all in all, the whole show was off and the band looked and acted uncomfortable, harried and generally unhappy. About an hour in, Neko messed up in the middle of another song, then pointed to the balcony. She said something about someone using their phone to film her, that she fucked up the song because of this person, and then she stormed off stage. The band left, and that was that.

It sucked. $45 per ticket, which was double what I paid last year to see her, going to see one of my favorite artists, and it ended like that.

I want to give her the benefit of the doubt. I feel like there was a lot more going on that night than one asshole filming her with his phone. But I guess we will never know, because she has said nothing about it. I don't really know how to feel. Feels kind of like a close friend flipped out and won't talk about it, and I'm not sure if she's just a person that throws fits and ruins other people's nights, or if she has something she won't tell me about. But of course, we aren't friends. She just makes incredible music that I love intensely. And so here we are...

When I bought my tickets to Coachella this year, there were a lot of bands I had planned to see. I wasn’t even intending on catching the Neko Case set, but I am so glad that I did. She turned out to be one of the best live performances I have ever seen.

The scene for her to take the stage was perfect, the sun was setting, the crowd was warmed up (both literally and figuratively,) and the California mountians were looking over us. With the mood set, her full band took the stage, keyboards, back-up singers, all of it, and they started rocking. She was playing the guitar with passion and belting out the lyrics. Her energy was over the top but she hit all the notes. You could tell that the crowd was really getting into her excitement.

Although the crowd wasn’t packed, she was playing to dedicated fans. I was toward the back and as she played “Man” I could see people everywhere just dancing and having a good time. Up front people were screaming a long and some people were even crowd surfing. The set was short, but everyone seemed to be having a really good time and were really feeling the power in her vocal. A strong group of musicians lead by a strong women.

Ex-The New Pornographers member, Neko Case has gone on to achieve a celebrated solo career since her first release way back in 2007. Often described as one of the coolest women in indie, Neko oozes a self-assured laid back demeanour when taking to the stage and she has obvious confidence within her vocal abilities.

She is also very skilled with a guitar, as she takes to the helm to perform the twisted riffs of 'The Tornado Loves You'. Accompanied by a host of very talented musicians, they soon set about recreating Case's work, most of which is lifted from new album 'The Worse Things Get, the Harder I Fight, the Harder I Fight, the More I Love You' which the fans very much enjoy hearing. She does refer back to its predecessor 'Middle Cyclone' throughout the evening much to the delight of the crowds. She steers clear completely of tracks by The New Pornographers yet nobody seems to mind as after 20 or so tracks of A-grade indie the whole audience is well and truly satisfied with their experience.

I attended the Neko show with Ray in Indy on June 15. I went for Neko Case and I knew very little about Ray Lamontange but liked what I had heard. Honestly, the crowd sucked. People talked during Neko's entire performance. This was my 6th time seeing her since I discovered her in 2004. The sound was not loud enough. I couldn't hear what she was saying to the crowd in between songs. She only played for an hour. And then we had to wait a solid hour for him to start. I wanted to hear more of her. Ray was great live but he didn't play anything I knew. I believe Neko should have headlined she's amazing and deserves to be heard. Here to hoping more people discover her music and love and appreciate what she gives to us musically. Anyhow, not the greatest experience but at leAst Neko killed it.

To correct one poster here. Neko is still an active member of the New Pornographers. She appears on their current Whiteout Conditions record/CD and was on the first part of their 2017 tour.

She is amazingly versatile solo or in the context of a group like NP--out front or singing harmonies. (band mate Kathryn Calder, a fine performer in her own right takes over for Neko on leads when Ms Case is not touring with the band).

The Case Lang Veirs show in Brooklyn last year was one of the most memorable shows I have ever attended.

Hard to pigeonhole Neko--suffice it to say she is just a wonderful singer and song writer. It's all just music! She also plays a mean tambourine and other rhythm items! (she was a drummer early in her career).

Great show. Neko Case is a great performer and brings a refreshingly authenticity to her shows that appeals to new listeners and long-time fans alike. So thankful for the opportunity to hear her play at Prescott Park, and the set list was a great blend of selections across her body of work. Opening with "Hold on, Hold On" set a intriguing tone for the night, and the G-rated "The Tigers Have Spoken" (modified in deferencte to the multitude of children jigging in front of the stage) was great. Hoped to hear "Furnace Room Lullaby" but hearing "Ragtime" live was a lot of fun. THe band was tight, and the sound levels were perfect. A must see performer.

The performance from Neko Case on the day her new album, Hell-On came out was very energetic albeit short. I feel like she honestly shouldve gotten more time on stage even though she was the opening act. Her vast catalogue of music deserves more than just a 45 minute set. She played several new songs off her new album and ended with Hold On, Hold On from 2006's Fox Confessor Brings the Flood. I highly recommend seeing her when she tours. Her voice is a force of nature.

This was my second time seeing Neko and once again, what a beautiful and powerful performer! This Case/Lang/Viers concert was everything I hoped it would be and more. When they played "Man", I lost my mind with happiness and absolutely LOVED seeing K.D. and Laura get so into it. It was perfect. These women are my favorite.

Saw Neko at the Oakdale, opened for Ray Lamontagne and wish she would have been the headliner, she was great.

Featured songs from Hell On, also mixed in a few of her classic tunes and was in a great mood, voice sounded amazing.

Crowd could have been a little more into it but their loss, Neko was outstanding.

jdnestor71’s profile image

Great show Friday night. Her voice is amazing. She is warm and funny -- the audience loved her. The set list was a mix of better known tracks and "deep cuts" as she joked. Even if you are not familiar with her material, you'll enjoy the show.

It was a pleasure to finally see her live.

About Neko Case

Neko Case steps out, cutting the sky and singing the stars, spinning fury and mercy as she goes. She loves the world and wears her heart on her sleeve, but she might eat it before you get to thinking it belongs to you.

Wild Creatures pulls together some high points of feral joy from twenty-one years of solo work by Neko Case. The Virginian marked Neko’s debut as a solo artist in 1997. She delved into darkness in 2000 with Furnace Room Lullaby, scrawled Blacklisted in 2004 and recorded The Tigers Have Spoken live the same year. In 2006, she dreamed Fox Confessor Brings the Flood, and in 2009 unleashed Middle Cyclone. She plumbed her own life in 2013 for The Worse Things Get, the Harder I Fight, the Harder I Fight, the More I Love You, and raised hell in 2018 with Hell-On. Now in her third decade of recording under her own name, she’s just getting started.

Is there another songwriter so fearless and inventive? Bending decades of pop music into new shapes, she wields her voice like a kiss and her metaphors like a baseball bat. She has cast the fishing net of her career wide—from Seattle and Vancouver to Chicago and Stockholm, setting up her home base on a farm in New England.

Gathering power year after year, Neko sings with the fierce abandon of a newborn infant crying in a basket in the woods. Since escaping the labels of country and Americana, the gorgeous train-whistle vocals of her early career sit submerged in her later style, where their ghost can appear any minute. When her voice jumps an octave, it’s almost visible, like sparks at night. “I never knew where I wanted to go or what I wanted to do with my voice,” she says, “but I just wanted to do it so bad.”

The world tends to love women singer-songwriters most when they’re wounded and helpless. Neko’s music spans a broader spectrum, from longing to malice. Her lyrics evoke worlds, imagining a woman pilot ready to die, a serial killer, a murdered child, and a tornado, just for starters. Is there any perspective she can’t write a song from or about? “I am a man,” she sings. “I am the man in the fucking moon.”

The Earth, too, and nature itself are wonders for her, from the dangerous attention of dandy wolves to a slaughtered tiger and birds frying on a wire. The world is dear to her, but there’s a lot happening in it that shouldn’t. It’s not her job to comfort you. You might try to come away from a Neko Case tune without a head full of images—but it’s impossible. Still, her songs won’t tell the whole story, rarely offering a panoramic view or a chronology. Instead, she offers up a series of snapshots, as if from a crime scene, and leaves the audience space to inhabit the closets and cathedrals she’s built.

Neko seems to live to bend the shape of the melodies she writes. Listeners might feel the music going in unexpected directions, as she looks for the note that will negotiate a truce to fuse it to her lyrics. It’s not that you can’t find a verse-chorus-verse structure in a Neko song. But you’re just as likely to find any chorus you hitch a ride with going off a cliff, or to hear a hook you think might be the chorus, only to watch it disappear.

Neko Case songs often exist with distinct sections that recall symphonies. Changing from ballads or waltz time to a rock beat and back, the elements sometimes seem wired together to make an improvised explosive device.

Talking about inspirations, she’s as likely to mention Queen as Patsy Cline. Her work covers a big canvas, including collaborations with dozens of musicians over the years (Paul Rigby, Calexico, and an assorted set of sidemen known as “her boyfriends,” just to name a few).

In studio, Neko obsesses over sound. Always involved with how her albums were recorded, she’s seized and embraced the role of producer. Standing halfway up a half-built stairway, she hammers nails into place as she goes along. Despite blowing every deadline she’s ever been given, Neko feels in her bones when a song or a project is done.

“Music is so weird,” she says, “because you never arrive where you’re going.” If her career were mapped, it might be a choose-your-own-adventure book. She hasn’t masterminded each album with some absolute endpoint in mind. “I’ve never been afraid to ask for help. I’m able to trust myself in the moments where I don’t know what’s going to happen.”

Neko insists on being larger than the narrow space that the world allocates to women. But don’t tell her what kind of feminist she’s supposed to be. There’s a famous dementia test in which you look at the pictures of an elephant or a giraffe and name them. Neko Case is the opposite of that. What if, by letting everything out of these cages, by taking the labels off living things, we had to encounter the world as it really is? The wild things, the lost things, the things that scare you, and the things that you love—what if it turns out all that is really home? What if, by writing about that, you could reinvent the universe?

What if some wild creature drags you out to the woods, but the woods begin to become the whole world, and your earlier home, still visible in the distance, suddenly seems less interesting than where you are now? You might be in the middle of a Neko Case song.

She’s doing it on her own terms, but the legacy she’s building is one that can stand up to music made by any other solo artist in her lifetime. Don’t look away; you never know what might happen. “I’m just trying,” she says, “to be myself as hard as I can.”

Riddy Arman Image

Riddy Arman opens her debut album from La Honda Records with a song called “Spirits, Angels, Or Lies” inspired by the true story of her father’s passing. In the lyrics, she examines the human tendency to interpret the unknown. The story she weaves details the final moments and visual hallucinations experienced when Johnny Cash visited her father on his deathbed. Long- time fans of Arman will recognize the song from her viral performance video, shot by Western AF in a Montana rail link boxcar, where the world was introduced to her distinct, sultry lope. Against the bucolic and industrial backdrop of the video, Arman is clearly in her element, clad with ranch worn clothing. It is obvious she lives a lifestyle many romanticize, but few truly understand.

However, Arman is more than just a cowboy, singing her lonely songs. The chapters of her life so far make for a story much richer than a common western archetype. Unafraid to take new paths, Arman has traveled across the country — from the farmlands of the Midwest to the bustling streets of New York City — writing songs, working as a ranch hand, and practicing an Agrarian lifestyle. It was during her childhood, full of folk and country music, in rural Ohio that she was first drawn to the guitar. Her deep dive into songwriting didn’t happen until her early 20s when she moved to central Virginia to resume her interest in horsemanship and agriculture on a friend’s small farm.

Not too long after the unexpected success of her Western AF session, Arman began an intensive six-day recording session at Mississippi Studios in Portland, Oregon. Hopeful, and longing to capture the essence of deeply personal stories from her life, she teamed up with producer Bronson Tew (Dom Flemons, Seratones, Jimbo Mathus) of Dialback Sound and tracked nine songs.

Moving forward from some of life’s most painful moments is in many ways the thread that ties each song together. Songwriting became part of Arman’s dialog with life, translating the experiences in not only lyrics, but also performance. Arman herself has chosen to take a different path, embracing isolation and interpreting her life through the rural landscape that adorns her lyrics. With fierce honesty and a voice that immediately commands attention, on her debut record, Riddy Arman has proven herself as much more than a cowboy.

The singer/songwriter discusses her new career-spanning compilation and teases upcoming New Pornographers music

After a Quarter-Century in the Game, Neko Case Is Finally Looking Back

Most can agree that songwriting is a craft, but few musicians actually Zoom in from a garage, near a workbench, surrounded by tools, in an oversized hoodie. Neko Case does.

“I have to do a lot of building today — top-secret building. I hope I get it right,” she tells Consequence . “I’m going to need a trip to the hardware store. That kind of thing.” Whatever Case is building in there — Tom Waits-style — includes spray paint, and is bound to be messy. But she’s up for this constructive sort of chaos.

Over Case’s long career — she put out her first record, The Virginian , in 1997 — she’s relentlessly pushed forward and honed her abilities as an idiosyncratic and incisive singer/songwriter. But she’s never put out a retrospective compilation until now. Case is on a press junket for Wild Creatures , a collection of 22 songs from her past (plus one new one, “Oh, Shadowless”) arriving Friday, April 22nd on ANTI- Records.

Is it a strange feeling for Case to finally look back on this wild, wooly thing she’s built for 25 years — an entire songbook? Not entirely, as she’s partly in the business of looking back. Performing live is predicated on it, and she’s lining up a tour this year (grab tickets here ) after what feels like forever. So is playing with her old friends in the New Pornographers, who just finished a new record.

How does Case view the arc of her career leading to Wild Creatures ? All is revealed in this career-spanning interview, which includes detours about a dirt-bike sample, depression, Reservation Dogs , and why she doesn’t want to tell anyone what the (gorgeous) new song “Oh, Shadowless” is about, less it bum them out into oblivion.

I imagine you’ve spent your career relentlessly looking forward to the next statement you can make. Is it strange to look back for once?

Well, it doesn’t really feel weird, because whenever I tour with the band, we’re always looking back: “What songs should we do this tour?” So, there’s always some kind of looking back happening. I still pretty much know everyone I’ve ever recorded with. So, it doesn’t feel weird, really. And the New Pornographers are the same. We just relearned two of our earliest records. So, it feels pretty par for the course right about now.
