New Year's Eve celebrations in the capital

Released 07/12/2022

Get ready to celebrate New Year’s Eve in Canberra with spectacular fireworks above Lake Burley Griffin to bring in 2023.

In what is becoming a tradition for the nation’s capital, Canberrans and visitors are invited to picnic along the foreshore of Lake Burley Griffin from 6pm and enjoy the community atmosphere with friends and family, and bring in the New Year with fireworks displays at 9pm and 12am.

This year, you can take a picnic to one of four hubs featuring entertainment and food vendors at Regatta Point, Patrick White lawns, Rond Terrace and Bowen Park.

The fireworks will be launched from multiple pontoons focused in the central and east basins of Lake Burley Griffin to ensure everyone at the hubs will have a great view. As fireworks will not be launched from west basin, Lennox Gardens is not a featured hub at this year’s event.

Assistant Minister for Economic Development, Tara Cheyne said, “The New Year’s Eve event is a fantastic way for us to come together with family and friends to celebrate and welcome in the New Year as a community.

“It also provides an opportunity for us to support our local artists, food vendors, tourism, and hospitality businesses.

“Eventgoers can plan ahead and take advantage of a pre-purchased picnic hamper to enjoy with friends and family while celebrating the New Year.

“Alternatively, if you’re supporting local and dining out in one of Canberra’s many restaurants, come down to one of the hubs afterwards to watch one, or both, of the fireworks displays.”

Canberra Balloon Spectacular

Witness the breathtaking sight of hot air balloons gracefully drifting across the city’s skyline over nine glorious days.

Each morning, weather permitting, balloons will begin to inflate at 6:00 am on Patrick White Lawns, with launches around 6:30 am. For early risers, a delightful hot breakfast awaits as you watch the balloons ascend and traverse the dawn sky. Don’t miss the opportunity to catch glimpses of the balloons throughout the morning, with fantastic viewing spots around the lake and from the Arboretum.

Daily updates regarding the balloon launches will be available around 6:00 am on the event website, as well as on the Enlighten Festival and Events ACT social media channels.

As a guideline, if wind speeds exceed 10 km/hour or if they are blowing from the west, balloon launches from Patrick White Lawns are unlikely due to airspace restrictions around the airport. Other factors such as rain may also impact launch decisions. However, if launches are not possible but conditions permit, some balloons may inflate and tether at Patrick White Lawns, still offering a spectacular sight for early attendees.

New Season. New Era.

Your guide to celebrating new year's eve in canberra.

fireworks in the city

Bid farewell to 2021 in style with fireworks on New Year’s Eve. Photo: File.

2021 will be going out with a bang. For the first time in two years, the fireworks are returning to Lake Burley Griffin, lighting up the sky with streaks of colour and marking the end of a rubbish year and the beginning of – fingers and toes crossed – a better one.

It will be Canberra’s first major event since lockdown and thousands of locals will take the opportunity to get out of the house and set up their camping chairs and picnics on the shores of the lake to enjoy the show, eat and be eaten by mosquitoes (so don’t forget your insect repellent).

What’s happening?

The party gets started at 6 pm when roving entertainment, pop-up vendors, and food trucks zero in on the city and lakeshore.

The first batch of pyrotechnics then goes off at 9 pm, launched from three barges across the Central, East and West basins of Lake Burley Griffin, followed by another salvo at midnight. Each show runs for about approximately 15 minutes.

Those who live nearby may like to put the pets indoors at these times.

Where can I see it?

The beauty of lakes is that they’re flat, so the ACT Government is reminding people that there is no need to all congregate in the National Triangle – you’ll be able to take in the view from a variety of lakeside and mountain-top vantage points across the city. Green spaces around the lake will be open for picnic blankets, chairs and gazebos.

New Year's Eve 2021

There’ll be fireworks going off in all three of the lake’s major basins. Photo: Events Canberra.

For those thinking of climbing into a kayak for a closer look, the government is strongly advising against trying to get up close and personal with the barges, as lovely as it might sound, to literally have fireworks going off right over your head.

The lake will be closed to regular users from 10 am on 31 December so SES and Police boats can move about unencumbered.

Where can I park?

Several roads and car parks will be closed on the evening, so plan ahead to avoid disappointment and U-turns.

The online map lists all of these in more detail. But in summary, the car parks at Bowen Park, Lennox Gardens, and Rond Terrace will be closed from 5:45 pm (31 December 2021) to 12:30 am (1 January 2022). There will also be a partial closure of the Regatta Point car park, limiting the number of spaces available at those times.

Canberra fireworks

Up to 30,000 people are expected to join in Civic Square’s New Year’s Eve festivities, with the fireworks being the biggest drawcard. Photo: File.

Parking at Black Mountain Peninsula will be monitored and Garryowen Drive will be closed when full. The National Library and large Questacon car park will be closed when they have reached capacity.

National Capital Authority (NCA) parking attendants will be out on the night, so be sure to double-check the parking signs to ensure 2022 doesn’t begin with a lot of money leaving your bank account. Parking on the grass is another no-no.

Many roads around the lake will be 40 km/h per hour zones between 5:45 pm and 12:30 am, including Commonwealth Avenue bridge, Kings Avenue bridge, Bowen Drive, Flynn Drive near Lennox Gardens, and Parkes Way between the Edinburgh Avenue exit and the Kings Avenue intersection.

Where can I eat?

A number of food trucks will be parked around the lake at various locations, but to limit crowds assembling, don’t expect dedicated ‘food hubs’ with lots of trucks or options.

The city’s restaurants, bars, and pubs will also be open late, making the most of the occasion.

Anything else I need to know?

Roving police and security patrols will be on duty to monitor crowd behaviour and alcohol consumption throughout the night. A text alert number will be made available via social media and the Events Canberra website for alerting security and emergency services on the night during the event.

First-aid facilities will be available at Regatta Point, Rond Terrace, Patrick White Lawns, Bowen Park and Lennox Gardens.

The ACT Government encourages everyone to spread out and use the Check In CBR app where QR codes are supplied – and don’t forget a mask is required indoors.

To ensure the health and safety of all attendees, stay home if unwell, maintain physical distancing, and practise healthy hygiene practices, both in the lead up to and at the event.

We are almost 99% Vaxed in Canberra. It’s outside in the fresh air and beautiful weather. We need to learn to live with Covid. It’s nice to celebrate and hope for a much better 2022…

Simple. Don’t.

Kylie Penhaligon if 9pm isn’t too late 😚

The changing of the calendar is an arbitrary and silly celebration. We should abolish New Year’s Eve celebrations and the New Year’s Day public holiday and replace it with a more significant public holiday later in the year.

Lionel George No I’m quite happily employed, but if you’re making an offer then I’m happy to consider it.

New Year’s Eve celebrations being cancelled all over the world and Sydney and Canberra going ahead. What on earth is wrong with these governments?

Christine Webb we are all going to catch this virus, just like the flu. We need to learn to live with it and get back to normality.

Christine you don’t have to go. Others want to resume living.

No midnight fireworks on new year’s eve.

midnight nye fireworks cruise canberra

THE ACT government has cancelled the midnight New Year’s Eve fireworks at Lake Burley Griffin. There will be only a 9pm event with no show to welcome in the New Year.

Assistant Minister for Economic Development Tara Cheyne says the 9pm fireworks will be a 15-minute display rather than two shorter displays at 9pm and midnight.

There will be three event hubs situated at “premium viewing points” at Rond Terrace, Regatta Point and Commonwealth Place.

Each hub will feature music from local DJs Boom Box 2U, while a synchronised soundtrack will accompany the extended fireworks display as it launches from the Central Basin and Commonwealth Bridge to maximise visibility for everyone.

“Past attendance numbers have shown that the community strongly favours the earlier showtime, as it is more suitable for families, ” she says.

“So, this year, we are consolidating the same volume of fireworks previously spread across two shows into one huge fireworks spectacular launched from the Central Basin and Commonwealth Bridge to ensure a great view for everyone.”

4 Responses to No midnight fireworks on New Year’s Eve

It seems to be penny pinching . Many businesses have built expectations around midnight fireworks The rational to concentrate them does not exist as the reason for fireworks was to bring in the New Year . The earlier time was for children and not matching the New Year tradition.

This is so frustrating. You’re revoking the ability for some families to attend the midnight one. I for one with my family, attend the midnight one and I know there are also plenty of other people who attend as it is usually busy during that hour. Some families may not be able to make the 9pm one due to circumstances that are unavoidable such as a job or they just aren’t free. No one is saying those families that prefer the 9pm one have to go to the midnight one. They can continue to go to the 9pm one, therefore the area still an audience there but now you’re getting rid of the midnight one and losing that audience. Why would you do that? It was perfectly fine the way it was before and everyone was happy. It really doesn’t matter if the 9pm is more favourable to certain families. As is with that time the midnight time may be more favourable to other families or it is just in their tradition. Everyone was happy with the way it was before there was no necessary need for this. Due to this change, my family and I will not be able to attend because some family members are unavailable and working. Thanks a lot.

Guess traditions don’t matter anymore, what even is the point? We celebrate this arbitrary day which has no significance in the greater cosmos but it is our day, our celebration. This is further showing how out of touch Canberra is with the rest of Australia, and the world. Not worth the four hour drive now, we’re giving the ACT a pass this year.

Well done, Canberra. Let’s have Christmas in April then. Traditions do not seem to mean anything. The fireworks are meant to be at midnight to celebrate the New Year coming in. At 9pm what are you effectively celebrating? What a ridiculous and arbitrary choice, probably to suit someone (or their family) who made the decision. Another perfect way to maintain the (unfortunately) poor reputation of Canberra.
