The Best Kwik Trip Food for Road Trips

Kwik Trip is the best gas station in America. Yep, I said it. The very best. From the Kwik Trip food options to the kind employees and clean facilities, it’s always a great place to stop. Not to mention, always a wonderful customer experience.

And when you’re on a long drive, Kwik Trip stores offer everything you need. Especially when it comes to food. Hot, real food; not those shriveled-up hot dogs that have been sitting there for hours. We’re talking donuts from their own bakery. Snacks on snacks whether you’re looking to indulge or remain healthy. Even a grocery store section with fresh produce!

Kwik Trip foods are perfect for your road trips and vacations across the Midwest.

Note: Kwik Trip is Wisconsin’s favorite gas station so you are going to find them ALL OVER Wisconsin. There are also plenty throughout Minnesota. And a few in Illinois and small towns of Upper Michigan as they start to expand!

Let’s get into all of the best Kwik Trip food options:

The glazer — a kwik trip staple.

Did you know Kwik Trip owns its own bakery in La Crosse, Wisconsin? YEP. Which means their baked goods are some of the best. Enter: The Glazer. Perhaps the most exciting breakfast, snack, dinner (whatever!) at Kwik Trip.

The Glazer Donut is fresh, fluffy, sweet, and only $0.99. Grab the plain (my personal favorite), chocolate-drizzled, or white-drizzled, and savor every bite of the vanilla-glazed goodness!

• Approximately 24,000 donuts are created in just one hour!
• There is a glazer-scented candle. (Obviously, it smells good lol.)
• The Glazer originated in 2003 and was named by a Kwik Trip employee who submitted the idea to the marketing department.

WOW. Quite the section dedicated to a donut. Try one if you haven’t! It’s worth every calorie.

Pro Tip: Pair with a Karuba Coffee.

Their Karuba Gold machines will make all of your favorites; Lattes, Mochas, Chai Tea, Americanos, Iced Coffee, Hot Chocolate, and so much more. There are flavored syrups, the same ones as your favorite coffee shops, so you can be your own barista. And to finish it off perfectly, add whip cream, drizzle, and toppings. Not only can you make it exactly how you like it, but you’ll save some money!

Kwik Trip Burritos

One of my favorite things about Kwik Trip food is their hot options. It’s not your average (gross) gas station food. It’s actual real food and always hits the spot. And the burritos…oh man, the burritos. They are my favorite Kwik Trip purchase. Even more than the Glazer…

• Beef & Bean Burrito: The ultimate option. But rare. If this is available, grab it!
• Chicken Salsa Rice Burrito: Very delish. My second favorite. Beef wins through because the flavor in this one has a hint of sweetness.
• Sausage Breakfast Burrito: Solid. My only complaint is the liquid cheese. Still good though.
• Pizza Burrito: If I’ve had too many beers, I really like this one. Lol.

Kwik Trip Chicken Sandwiches

No burritos? That’s all right. Because chicken sandwiches are always available. Go with the regular or spicy and you will never be disappointed. Grab two then head over to the condiments and doctor them up. Lettuce, tomato, mayo, mustard, whatever you like is there to make your meal a little more hearty!

Kwik Trip Brand Chips

Love Doritos? Grab the Kwik Trip brand version —for cheaper! There’s also sour cream and onion, tortilla, or potato. They are always fresh and go perfectly with your chicken sandwich! (Ask my husband, this meal is a delicacy…)

Omg if there’s anything I literally cannot deny myself, it’s these damn egg rolls. Every snack, lunch, or dinner I get from Kwik Trip includes an egg roll. Chicken sandwich with an egg roll. Salad with an egg roll. Donut with an egg roll. It really doesn’t matter lol. All flavors are delicious. And they are always a hot and a fresh food option!

Kwik Trip Ice Cream

Kwik Trip ice cream is all made with local milk and tastes just like the expensive stuff. Plus, you can get them pint-size. Number One Pro Tip: if you love Ben & Jerry’s Half Baked (I mean, who doesn’t?) then you need to opt for the pint-size of Brookie Dough Ice Cream. Omg. I was expecting a decent substitution hack, but my goodness it’s exact. Get your fix at Kwik Trip for $2.75 vs. a $5+ pint of Ben & Jerry’s.

Keep It Healthy with Kwik Trip Snacks

Sometimes you’re coming home after a road trip full of beers and unhealthy food and you are craving something that your body actually appreciates. And believe it or not, you can make healthy choices, even when you make a gas station stop. Another reason why I love Kwik Trip is the partnership for a Healthier America. Here are some healthy food product options:

Bento Boxes & Fresh Fruit

Fruits, cheeses, peanut butter, nuts. Kwik Trip food includes a variety of bento boxes that give you the perfect road trip snack when you aren’t about chasing empty calories. And right next to those, you’ll find the perfect-sized fruit cups. Watermelon, cantaloupe, grapes, strawberries, you have all of the options! And it’s always fresh.

Perfect Bars

My favorite healthy snack—whether I am at Kwik Trip or not. These bars are made from whole foods only and without natural flavors. They have a variety of options and the best is the Dark Chocolate Chip Peanut Butter. The best part? They really do fill you up with 15 grams of protein.

Prepared Salads

One of my go-to’s when I need some easy vegetables! There are a variety of salad options with fresh lettuce and toppings that come in a separate compartment—perfect if you want to leave something out. My go-to is the chicken supreme!

• Chocolate Milk: Honestly, I’m not a huge chocolate milk drinker but it seems to be extremely popular with the Kwik Trip community (yes, there is a community ha) and is very affordable!
• Smoothies: Stop by the self-serve Fresh Blender machine. Create your own smoothie through a touchscreen menu. The kids love it!
• Flavored Water: Kwik Trip carries Vita Ice which is a staple for my husband and must-grab for flavored water fanatics.
• Karuba Coffee: You know this one already!
• Beer & Wine: If you’re in Wisconsin, make your alochol purchases at Kwik Trip. If you’re in Minnesota, they still need to get with the program. (Don’t drink and drive ;))

More Kwik Trip Foods:

• Pizza: They always have great options by the slice. And sometimes there are insane deals on full pizzas you can’t pass up! Plus, they have take and bake pizzas as well.
• Croissant Breakfast Sandwich: People swear by these! The egg and cheese croissant sammy’s are pretty big and a little much for me in the morning, but if this is your type of thing, you’ll love it.

Here are ideas to build meals from Kwik Trip, from sushi to sloppy joes to chicken

Kwik Trip is a Wisconsin institution.

Founded in 1965 in Eau Claire, it's headquartered in La Crosse, and, from wedding photos  to recurring references by Wisconsin comedian Charlie Berens , it has secured its place in Wisconsinites’ hearts.

I am on board with Kwik Trip love. I stop there often for morning coffee — and am psyched to be enjoying its annual pumpkin spice brew yet again.

When my daughters were younger, it was regular after-school excursion; they would choose a drink and a snack, and we would relax in the café area as they told me about their day. And this past Mother’s Day, when my sister and I told my mom we wanted to take her out for breakfast, she instead requested that we just stop at Kwik Trip for coffee to bring back to her front porch while we sipped and chatted.

Although I’ve always loved Kwik Trip for its coffee and snacks, I don’t typically use it as a grocery store. But since the school year started and my schedule has gotten busier, I’ve become very aware that Kwik Trip is closer to my house than my regular grocery store. I’ve also become aware of the variety of options to prep a quick dinner.

After a little research, I discovered a reason I’ve noticing more meal selection choices. While doughnuts, hot food, salads, sandwiches and produce have been in the stores since the early 2000s, Kwik Trip’s fresh fried chicken and take-home meals didn’t arrive until 2019 and 2020.

Recently, I took a few trips to Kwik Trip, picked up several foods to taste-test with my family and put together ideas for meals I can make purely out of Kwik Trip food. 

Kwik Trip meal for a busy weeknight

Roasted chicken: Roasted or rotisserie whole chickens are my go-to for a busy weeknight. I usually buy them at Pick ’n Save, but since Kwik Trip is closer to my house, I was glad to see I could get one there. My daughter Wendy and I loved the chicken, which was flavorful and juicy even after reheating it.

Dinner rolls: My husband often picks these up on his own snack runs to Kwik Trip. They’re soft and pair well with butter; we didn’t even need to heat them up.

Prepared Caesar salad: A lower container holds Romaine lettuce, with chicken and Parmesan cheese in separate containers on top.  This setup keeps the ingredients from becoming soggy. I figured it would be a typical gas station salad, but the lettuce was surprisingly fresh, and the chicken flavorful. I recommend combining two of these for a family.

Yogurt parfait: The yogurt parfait had vanilla yogurt and strawberries mixed together, with granola in a separate container to mix in afterward. I picked this up on my second Kwik Trip visit, which Wendy accompanied me on. She said she misses the parfaits we used to get at McDonald’s and wanted to see how this compared. It was less sugary than the McDonald’s version but still had enough sweetness to work for a healthy-ish dessert.

Additional options

Fried chicken:  Kwik Trip has both hot and cold versions of much of its prepared food. The cold option worked out well when I picked up fried chicken one morning after dropping my kids off at school. I didn’t want to heat it up for fear of drying it out, so we ate it cold, picnic-style. It was juicy and well-seasoned. 

Sushi: This was a wild card as I’ve never had gas station sushi, and, admittedly, that sounds a little scary. But this isn’t just any gas station; it’s Kwik Trip! I went very basic with the California roll. It’s packaged like grocery store deli counter sushi, with rolls in one container and packets of wasabi, ginger and soy sauce on top, and a handy compartment to place them in. The rolls are smaller than standard deli counter sushi (and smaller than typical restaurant sushi), but they tasted great.

Kwik Trip meal for a moderately relaxed weeknight or a weekend

When I have enough time to cook instead of just reheat, this is what my family likes in a Kwik Trip meal. 

Sloppy joes and buns: I usually make sloppy joes from scratch, so I didn’t know it was possible to buy sloppy joe meat already seasoned and ready. Kwik Trip sells cooked meat with sloppy joe sauce that just has to be heated.

And here are some other meals for those moderately relaxed times: 

Bacon-wrapped pork tenderloin: This was a shocker when I saw it. Yes, I had seen the ground beef, the chicken breasts, the brats, even the steak at Kwik Trip. But the bacon-wrapped pork tenderloin seemed so fancy, and it was only $1.99. When I asked Wendy if I was reading the price correctly, she helpfully answered with a shrug. I followed the directions to heat it up in a pan, and we all agreed that it was delicious. Although Wendy pointed out it’s hard to go wrong with double pork, I was still impressed. The portion is small, but with a reasonable number of sides, it could be a good main dish for two people and provide a good taste of something delicious for three or four people. And, if you’re just cooking for yourself, it’s a great option.

Fresh meat like brats, steak, hamburger patties and chicken breasts

Pizza: Kwik Trip has frozen pizzas, hot pizza slices and take-and-bake pizzas. I reviewed the take-and-bake pizza a few years ago during a taste-testing pizza party. My friends and family didn’t love the pizza, which they thought had too much sauce, but if sauce is your thing, it’s worth a try. 

Tacos: This is the same deal as sloppy joe meat for me; when we have tacos, I typically cook the meat and mix in my own spices. But Kwik Trip’s seasoned-and-ready taco meat is super convenient. Along with some lettuce, tomatoes, shredded cheese, sour cream and taco shells — all available at Kwik Trip — this is an easy meal to prep. 

Kwik Trip meal to replace fast food

I mentioned that my local Kwik Trip is closer to my house than the grocery store. It’s also closer than most fast-food restaurants. That makes Kwik Trip a great choice, and a nice change of pace, for our Friday nights, when we typically get fast food to eat at home while watching a movie. Here’s what my family would choose for that.

Chicken tenders: These tasted very similar to the fried chicken — Kwik Trip does a good job of seasoning chicken. These are sold both on their own or with waffle fries as a side.

Cheese curds: When I saw Kwik Trip had cheese curds and pointed them out to my daughter, she nodded her head. “Can we really say we’re from Wisconsin if we don’t try the cheese curds?” she asked. A very reasonable question. This is an embarrassing admission — Wisconsin girl that I am — but I’m not a huge fan of cheese curds. But — Wisconsin girl that I am — I did appreciate that they smelled like State Fair food.  My husband is our family cheese curd connoisseur, and he liked them. We all thought they were a bit too bready, but the flavor was good.

Frozen drinks: I think a fast food meal needs a special drink to go with it. Kwik Trip’s self-serve drink stations have always fascinated my daughters and me. Their favorites are the Arctic Slushes (Blue Moon Frost), and I gravitate toward the coffee specialties, including frappes and macchiatos. Kwik Trip also has machines for fruit smoothies and chocolate shakes.

Additional options for fast food-like meals include hamburgers or cheeseburgers; sandwiches, including fried chicken and waffle, barbecue pork rib and fish with cheese; chicken wings; hot dogs, pizza slices and burritos. 

Kwik Trip snack meal

When we have people over for a game night, or sometimes just for our own family dinner, we like to make a meal out of snacks. This is especially a good idea for us, since most of Kwik Trip’s prepared foods aren’t safe for my older daughter, who has food allergies. (Side note: Kwik Trip has a sign on its door to alert people to the possibility of cross-contamination by the major allergens in its prepared food.)

For those meals, my family would choose sausage, sliced fruit, veggie trays and a variety of crackers, cheese blocks or slices, pretzels, chips and dips, and salsa and guacamole. 

Kwik Trip meals for when you're sick

When family members are sick, I take advantage of how close Kwik Trip is to my house. It’s convenient because they carry Tylenol, Advil, cold and allergy medicine, Pepto Bismol, cough drops and throat lozenges. For the nourishment I have sought out soothing foods for sore throats, bland foods for upset stomachs and novel foods to get people with suppressed appetites excited to eat something. Here’s what I typically choose:

Soup: Kwik Trip carries fresh hot soup as well as refrigerated bags of soup to heat up on the stove. And canned soups are in the grocery section. I heated up a bag of refrigerated chicken and wild rice soup. Wendy loves rice, and she’s been enjoying chicken noodle soup from restaurants lately. However, she took one look in the pot and declared there were too many vegetables for her. And there were quite a few vegetables: carrots, celery and mushrooms, as well as chicken and wild rice. Lots of veggies is not a flaw to me; that’s how I love my soup. If I were to get this again, I would add salt and pepper. The flavors were good, but it tasted a bit bland.

Drinks: Kwik Trip has lots of drink options in the refrigerated section, with different juices, water and sodas (We always get Sprite and Gatorade when someone is sick.) The drink stations are convenient for soothing sore throats, with cold Slushes and fountain drinks, and hot tea and coffee.

OPINION: The best foods to get from KwikTrip

On the first day of my junior year of college here at Minnesota State, I was feeling many, many different things. I had just moved into my studio apartment and didn’t have any roommates, so I felt lonely.

The long, careless, sunny days of summer vacation were over, replaced by school rearing its ugly head (no hate to you Stomper, you’re gorgeous) in my rear view mirror as I drove to campus.

But the feeling I felt the strongest, the feeling that started in my gut and rumbled up to my heart like a scene from Indiana Jones, was hunger. I had just moved into my apartment and I didn’t have any food in the place yet. The only thing stocked in my cabinets was dust, and the only thing in my fridge a mysterious stain that the previous tenant had left without cleaning.

My apartment sat right next to a local gas station, Kwik Trip. I figured I was in the mood for food that resembled a pre-packaged Fisher Price kids’ kitchen set, so I decided to check it out and see what grub they had.

Imagine my shock when I bit into my gas station cheeseburger and didn’t immediately contract food poisoning; imagine my further stupefaction when I realized that this food was actually tasty!

I have since gone to Kwik Trip to get a quick bite less times than is financially smart, and more times than I’d care to admit. I also had a brief stint as a Kwik Trip crew member for the first semester of my junior year, so when it comes to unwarranted opinions on the best food to get at the gas station, I’m practically a Selena Gomez in a sea of Hailey Biebers. (For those not keeping up with the drama, that’s Gen-Z for saying ‘I’m a pro.’)

Number one on my list of best foods to get during a quick trip to Kwik Trip is the macaroni and cheese. Words cannot fully encapsulate my feelings toward the gooey grandeur; rather, a series of pleasured squawks, happy wails, and volcanic exhales as I realize the food is too hot to eat.

The boneless wings are also very delicious. They come in many different genres: barbecue, buffalo, Caucasian (plain, no sauce or seasoning.) You can even buy them frozen if you’re too ashamed to eat them in the store. Wimp.

Number one for me though, beating out all the other foods, is the frozen pizza. There are many different frozen pizza brands placed throughout the store, set up to deter you from reaching the finish line and getting the actual good frozen pizza.

Pothole pizza, Meat Sweats. If you don’t like meat on your pizza it may not be the type of pizza for you, but if you’re the type of person that eats pizza with just cheese on it, I fear for your mental stability and advise an immediate mandatory 72-hour-hold in your nearest asylum.

A smattering of sliced pepperoni. Jumbo sausages all over, great flavor with no rubbery feeling. The cheese is perfect, not a pathetic skimpy amount like many others. The crust gets crispy but not burnt. And for under ten dollars, the pizza isn’t a steal. It’s a five-star robbery.

Kwik Trip also has a delicious set of dessert options, ranging from donuts, to pies, to cookies. The Peanut Butter cookies are the best, undeniably. If you throw a four pack in the microwave for thirty seconds, close your eyes and only half-taste them, they’re essentially the same as fresh baked cookies.

There was a brief period of time where Kwik Trip discontinued their peanut butter cookies, in an effort to expand their cookie palette. Imagine my horror when I walked into the gas station, went to the cookie section and saw nary a peanut butter cookie. Where did they go? Who’s going to eat white chocolate macadamia berry? Why are there tears in my eyes?

Kwik Trip voted best gas station, ranks highly for food in USA TODAY's 10Best Readers' Choice Awards

W isconsin’s beloved Kwik Trip is getting its flowers on a national stage. It was named the best gas station brand and ranked highly for its food in the USA TODAY 10BestReaders’ Choice Awards.

Based out of La Crosse, Kwik Trip has become ubiquitous on the region’s roadside and has expansion plans popping up regularly. The USA TODAY awards are a multiphase process: first, the selections are decided by a panel of industry experts, then USA TODAY editors vet those nominations and they're then voted on by readers for four weeks.

In the best gas station brand category, Kwik Trip bested Hy-Vee and Casey’s , which placed second and third.

Meanwhile, for best food, Kwik Trip was in third place, behind Royal Farms and Casey’s.

Kwik Trip has a strong reputation for its food — a collection of hot food items like burgers and fried chicken, as well as packaged goods, including the recently announced limited-release Blueberry Dunker-flavored potato chips.

What? There was a staggering upset in this year's USA TODAY 10Best roadtrip rankings for Best Gas Station Brand and Best Gas Station for Food .

Cult-favorite Wawa doesn't appear anywhere on either one.

The other gas station/convenience store with a massive following, Buc-ee’s , squeaked in at No. 10 on both lists.

Besides Buc-ee's, only two gas stations with a Florida presence made either list. RaceTrac, which has 296 locations in Florida, was named No. 5 and TravelCenters of America with eight stores here was No. 8 for Best Gas Station Brands. TravelCenters also was named No. 5 for Best Gas Station for Food.

USA TODAY 10Best Gas Station Brands in the U.S. for 2024

Wisconsin-based Kwik Trip scored the highest in Best Gas Station Brand in the U.S., based on reader votes on gas stations selected by an expert panel.

Here are the rest:

• Kwik Trip : Kwik Trip has more than 800 locations, all in the northern midwest. No Florida stores.
• HyVee. HyVee sticks to the midwest, where they have over 285 stores in eight states.
• Casey's : There are nearly 2,500 Casey's gas stations in 16 states and territories across the country. Not Florida.
• Royal Farms : Royal Farms is in the northeast, with over 250 locations.
• RaceTrac : Finally, the first Florida gas station on the list. There are nearly 580 RaceTrac gas stations in the U.S., mostly in the south, with 296 right here in the Sunshine State.
• Maverik : They may have more than 400 locations in 12 states, but they're over on the other side of the country.
• Rutter's : The most localized of all the gas stations on the list, Rutter's has 87 locations in just two states, Maryland and Pennsylvania.
• TravelCenters of America : The next one on the list with any Sunshine State locations, there are eight TravelCenters of America in Florida. That's not surprising, the chain extends to about 300 locations in 44 states.
• QuikTrip : There are 1,077 QuikTrip locations in the U.S., but not in Florida.
• Buc-ee's : Known for their massive travel centers with hundreds of gas pumps, immaculate bathrooms and a wide range of food, Buc-ee's barely made the list at No. 10. The Texas-based Buc-ee's has nearly 50 locations in 10 states.

There are two Buc-ee's in Florida, in St. Augustine and Daytona Beach , with two more coming to Ocala and the Treasure Coast . The Daytona Beach Buc-ee's recently announced an expansion with a new 235-foot long car wash .

USA TODAY 10Best Gas Station for Food for 2024

Here's where the outrage begins. When many Floridians are thinking of heading to the gas station to grab a bite, odds are good they're thinking of a personalized Wawa hoagie, quesadilla or breakfast sandwich.

But the only gas stations with Florida locations to make the best-food list were TravelCenters of America and Buc-ee's.

The winner, nationwide? Royal Farms, which offers a 24/7 breakfast menu plus "sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs, and their popular fried chicken."

Here are the others that made the top ten for hungry travelers, and why readers voted for them.

• Royal Farms : The chain also sells a wide variety of packaged snacks and fountain and bottled beverages.
• Casey's : Casey's stores have sandwiches, wings, and breakfast items along with prepackaged fare, but they're known for their pizza.
• Kwik Trip : People come to Kwik Trip for the gas, but they come inside for the bakery which serves bread, muffins, cookies, bagels, and doughnuts. They also offer burritos, pizza, salads, soups, and fried chicken.
• Rutter's : Their food service counter is open 24/7 and includes seafood, burgers, pizza and subs, plus a full breakfast menu and a kid's menu.
• TravelCenters of America : Hard to argue with this one, and at least there are some in Florida. TravelCenters truck stops include complete full-service restaurants in their locations, and some are partnered with a variety of fast food places such as Popeyes and Taco Bell.
• Maverik : Inside a Maverik store you'll find BonFire Foods, an eatery making fresh pizzas, wraps, salads, sandwiches, and burritos every day.
• QuickChek : The more than 150 stores in New Jersey and New York are popular for their soups, salads, sandwiches, wraps, seasonal dishes and bakery goods such as their signature cookies.
• Weigel's : If you haven't driven through Tennessee you might not be familiar with Weigel's, which has about a hundred gas stations all over the eastern side of the state. But locals like the doughnuts, cookies, and muffins coming from the bakery, as well as the store's pizzas, sandwiches, fried chicken, and breakfast foods.
• QuikTrip : QT Kitchen counters serve up frozen treat concoctions, specialty drinks, breakfast biscuits, macaroni and cheese, sandwiches, pizza, and tacos made fresh to order every day.
• Buc-ee's : And then there's Buc-ee's. With locations larger than some grocery stores, Buc-ee's is famed for its bewilderingly large array of food, both freshly made (BBQ sandwiches, certified Angus beef brisket, pulled pork, sausages, turkey, kolaches, roasted cinnamon nuts, pastries, fudge, even potato chips) and packaged under the Buc-ee's name such as chips, candy, popcorn, hot sauces, candied jalapeños, the highly addictive Beaver Nuggets, and an entire wall of homemade jerky.

The 10 best gas station brands in the United States have been announced and the chain, which has been in Arizona for more than 60 years, did not make it onto the list.

However, several other chains with gas stations in metro Phoenix — including a cult favorite and one still under construction — did make the list and were noticed for their food offerings, too.

• Kwik Trip : Kwik Trip has more than 800 locations. None are located in Arizona.
• HyVee.  HyVee has more than 285 stores in eight states. None are located in Arizona.
• Casey's : Casey's has gas stations in 16 states. None are located in Arizona.
• Royal Farms : Royal Farms is in the northeast. None are located in Arizona.
• RaceTrac : RaceTrac has gas stations mostly in the south. None are located in Arizona.

Buc-ee's has locations throughout the South and Southeast, where it is known for its large selection of food and goods, as well as its clean bathrooms.

According to documents submitted to the city, the company plans to open a Buc-ee’s Travel Center in Goodyear . The retail store is planned to be about 75,000 square feet, according to plans submitted to the city. For context, a 75,000-square-foot retail building is larger than some full-size grocery stores.

It is unclear when the gas station will open.

This is a decent representative for the franchise. The facility is clean and well-maintained, the restrooms were clean, and the staff were friendly and attentive. If one needs a fill-up and/or pitstop, this location is a solid option.

10 Traditional Meals To Try In Moscow

Moscow is best known for its squares, towers, and beautiful architecture, but there are also plenty of delicious traditional meals to try in Moscow. Writing about top meals to try in Moscow is not easy. But not because there’s not much good stuff to choose from; absolutely not. It’s hard because they have a wide range of mouth-watering appetizers, vegetarian and meat dishes.

Prior to traveling to Moscow, I didn’t know much about Russian cuisine and Russian food culture. By doing some research and talking to relatives of mine who have already been there, I had a great introduction to all of the best foods to eat in Moscow.

I was pleasantly surprised by all that Moscow had to offer and I’d be happy to eat here again! With the new twist in global politics, the Russian way of cooking might have gotten the second breath. As contemporary Russians are clearly reinventing traditional meals, there are tons of places to eat in Moscow and the culinary scene is very diverse.

From fatty meat, pancakes, and cabbage to hearty dumplings and pierogi that come with various fillings, Russian food has a reputation for being very affordable. Even the tastiest meals are often quite cheap and can be found everywhere – from Soviet-themed canteens to upscale restaurants.

Here’s a list of popular Russian food meals and my favorite restaurants for traditional Russian cuisine that remind me of my recent trip to Moscow. Enjoying local food can be a great introduction to Russian culture but beware. Russian food is appetizing, filling and addictive, so make sure you reserve enough time to walk off those calories. I’m going to tell you a secret – it’s making me so hungry right now. Why did I do this to myself?

1. Pelmeni (Russian Meat Dumplings)

When people think about what to eat in Moscow, Russian meat dumplings are almost always on top of the list. Dumplings may have originated in China, but this dish has been adapted to become a staple food item in Russian cuisine. Unlike the Chinese Jiaozi, Russian meat dumplings are often smaller and semicircular, rectangular or triangular in shape.

While the local legend has it that Pelmeni originated on the slopes of the Ural mountains, dumplings, as well as, their vegetarian version – vareniki are extremely popular in Russia.

Vareniki are just delicious if you are vegetarian. Wrapped in an envelope of unleavened dough, vareniki are commonly filled with potatoes, apple puree, or sweet cottage cheese.

In contrast to vareniki, traditional Russian dumplings are stuffed with minced meat, onion, and herbs and enjoyed with sour cream, tomato sauce, or vinegar. Locals just love to keep dumplings in the freezer, adding them into boiling water when they don’t have an hour to spend simmering dinner over the stove.

Where to get them: Lepim i Varim (Stoleshnikov lane 9/1). They claim to use meat that is fresh and has never been frozen, and you’ll need to eat a lot of dumplings if you want to prove them wrong.

2. Blini (Russian Pancakes)

Aside from dumplings, a stack of plain and hot blini (pancakes) is still the most popular thing on the menu in Moscow. Similar to classic French crepes, traditional Russian pancakes are paper-thin. Made from wheat, eggs, and milk, blini are thicker and greasier than crepes and served either sweet or savory.

If you have a sweet tooth, you’ll be in heaven here. Russian pancakes can be filled with blueberry jam, strawberry sauce or honey. Although there are also a ton of great traditional recipes that require using additions such as caviar, sour cream or smoked salmon.

Where to get them: While the city is dotted with eateries where you can try blinis, Breakfast Cafe (M. Nikitskaya 2/1) is definitely a place to find a budget-friendly selection of blini which includes sweet options, fruity options, meat options, or the classic savory.

3. Pierogi (Pies)

Enjoyed as an on-the-go snack, pierogi can envelop pretty much anything – from the minced meat, cabbage, and potatoes to apple jam and cottage cheese. A smaller version of this Russian appetizer is known as pirozhki and comes at a very affordable price, often for less than $1.

Where to get them: As ubiquitous blinis and dumplings, you’ll find pierogi just about everywhere – obviously the further out of the city center you go, the cheaper you’ll find them. I had mine at Stolle (Pyatnitskaya 3/4), and very succulent they were too!

4. Shchi (Cabbage Soup)

When it comes to naming staple foods of Russian cuisine, shchi would be at the top of the list. This cabbage soup is a large part of Russian culture mostly due to its simplicity. With a quick and easy recipe, shchi has become a quite common meal at all levels of society.

If you are vegetarian you will love this soup because it is traditionally made from cabbage or sauerkraut, potatoes, carrots, onions, and various spices with optional meat add-ins. Modern Russians use meat broth and sauerkraut in winter, preferring light vegetable broth in Summer. I was lucky enough to compare and try homemade shchi with restaurant shchi. So I liked the idea of adding a little vinegar flavor in the soup.

Where to get them: All over the country, but I first sampled it in Grabli Cafe (Arbat 1). And now I’m completely addicted to it. Send help.

5. Borscht (Beet Soup)

When people hear “Ukrainian traditional food” they immediately think of borscht. But hey, don’t we supposed to talk about Russian food here? Yup, you’re right! Borscht is a bit of an international celebrity and has so many different versions, including vegetarian, that I can’t help but mention it here!

Traditional borscht is one of my favorite Russian soups. It’s simple, hearty, and filling. Normally, it’s just a meat broth with vegetables like cabbage, carrots, potatoes, onions, and beetroot that gives the soup its distinctive red color. This soup is served both hot and cold depending on the season, and in some regions, they might also add kidney beans, turnips, vegetable marrows.

When in Moscow, you’ll want to try their version of borscht – expect to spot beef, ham, and sausage pieces in the broth. For a decent version of borscht, visit Taras Bulba tavern (Petrovka str 30/7) that is a ten-minute walk from the Tverskaya subway station.

6. Salad Olivier (Russian Salad)

Nothing is more evocative of the influence of French culture in Russia than in the effects on the traditional cuisine of the country. Salad olivier is, perhaps, the most apt example. Originally invented by the Belgian chef Lucien Olivier, the salad has become an iconic food during the Soviet and Post-Soviet period.

Authentic Olivier salad contained veal tongue, caviar, lettuce, crayfish, gherkins, and smoked duck. But times have changed and the ingredients now tend toward the boiled eggs, bologna sausage, potatoes, and pickles all bound with mayonnaise.

An update of Olivier version, known as Stolichny, became a staple of Russian cuisine and a typical dish served at the New Year’s Eve tables. If you want to try original, more exquisite Olivier salad, you should eat Dr.Zhivago’s (Mokhovaya str, 15/1) version. It is not the original recipe but has some of that imperial richness.

7. Beef Stroganoff

I don’t know what could be more synonymous with Moscow then beef stroganoff. Walk down any block in Central Moscow and you will come across a restaurant serving it. I was somewhat skeptical at first but now I have to admit – nothing beats a plate of beef stroganoff topped with sour cream sauce together with onions and mushrooms. Yum. I had some of the best beef stroganoff of my life in Moscow.

According to a widespread belief, this dish as we know it originated when French chef Andre Dupont served it to please his boss – the Russian Count Alexander Stroganoff. Another legend has it that lightly floured beef cubes (but not strips) sauced with prepared mustard and broth served specially for the guests of Count. Since the dish could be easily divided into portions it became incredibly popular among nobles and commoners.

The beef stroganoff at Villa Della Pasta (Pyatnitskaya, 26) is all of the unapologetic excesses of the years before revolution sautéed into one mouth-watering, hearty, rib-sticking dish. And like the Hermitage Museum or the Red Square, you really shouldn’t say you hate beef stroganoff without giving it a go first.

This is where my Moscow food guide becomes a Moscow drink guide because Kvass is… *drumroll*… a drink! Who’d have thought? But you shouldn’t leave Russia without giving the country’s version of Coca Cola a try, because, in my opinion, it’s better than the Red and White.

Russian food culture inevitably connected with drinking kvass. This fermented beverage has been known since the 10th century AD according to ancient Russian text. At that time kvass was the alcoholic drink, and it was stronger than beer we know today.

The alcohol percentage in ancient Russian kvass could achieve 16%. Everything has changed so kvass today only contains up to 1% alcohol, so even kids are allowed to drink it.

This traditional fermented drink is very popular in summer so you will find countless brands to choose from. It is widely available at grocery stores. But you really have to try homemade kvass at the local market or restaurants that brew their own kvass. The taste is so much different from the brands you’ll find at the supermarket.

Where to get it: While there are plenty of grocery stores to grab a kvass, I got mine at Burgermeister restaurant (Teatralnaya square, 5/2). They have a strong focus on beer, their kvass’s just as good.

9. Buckwheat Porridge

Yet another staple food of Russian cuisine. While I’m not a big fan of buckwheat porridge (or “gretchka” as locals call it), boiled buckwheat is definitely something that keeps Russians on track! It provides more protein than rice, wheat, millet, or corn and completely gluten-free.

From ancient times this nourishing, but cheap and easy, the dish is something you can find just about everywhere in the country. If you would ask me why do Russians have it with almost every meal, I would tell you that it has a nutty flavor and because one serving of buckwheat set one up for a long day.

I had buckwheat porridge for breakfast that kept me full until lunch owing to the slow release of energy. The classical buckwheat dish is crumby may resemble brown rice. You can eat it as a side dish to meat, pairing particularly well with offal and wild game. But my favorite is to serve it with fresh cold milk and sugar as I had for breakfast.

The best part of my meal was the honesty of my waiter at GrechkaLab (Pushechnaya str, 7/5). When I ordered buckwheat porridge with onions, he looked at me funny, “No, that will not be good.” I was a bit taken aback and he explained that the buckwheat porridge is too mild and dry to eat on its own and needed to go with piquant meatballs or milk. I said I wanted to try it anyways and he reluctantly put the order in. Sure enough, buckwheat porridge was tasteless on its own and I should have trusted his judgment. It was refreshing to have the honest opinion of a waiter and he turned out to be completely correct.

10. Solyanka Soup

This thick and spicy soup is an incredible mixture of incongruous ingredients can be served as the first and the second course. Solyanka is a Medieval Russian dish was especially popular among the peasantry. Made with various types of sausages, potatoes, carrots, onions, pickled cucumbers, the soup is very hearty and will definitely keep you nice and warm when it is chilly outside.

Definitely, traditional Russian food is great and it was hard for me to narrow down the list to just ten. I haven’t even begun to touch on the classic dishes that need to be tried. Stroganina, okroshka, borodinsky bread, kholodets. Not to mention vodka. That will require a list all its own.

This Great Barrington ice cream shop lists all its ingredients to ensure visitors know what’s in their homemade ice cream, and flavors at SoCo Creamery include blueberry honey lavender, ginger, and black raspberry, which pack a wallop of flavor in each bite."

About SoCo Creamery

SoCo was founded in 2004, and says it makes "super-premium" ice cream and sorbet. The shop states on its website that "we source all our dairy from a fourth-generation family farm in Vermont, (and) make our own inclusions (cookie dough, brownies, caramel) from scratch in  our own kitchen ."

SoCo has won awards for its ice cream and is "wildly popular" during the summer, according to the shop. And their brand has traveled a long way.

"You will find SoCo pints, cups and boxes distributed from Maryland to Maine and in locations such as Whole Foods stores in eastern New England, King’s supermarkets in northern New Jersey, and Morton Williams in New York City," the website states.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has not gone as quickly as the Kremlin once predicted, but a recent visit by a group of military students to a park in Moscow was a much speedier affair.

Hit by a sudden blast of early May snow, their instructor moved his young charges quickly along, the sooner to get somewhere warm. But they did take the time to stop for photos in front of the captured enemy armaments on display.

Among the biggest trophies were M1 Abrams and Leopard tanks. Ukraine had hoped that the vaunted American- and German-made war machines would help turn its fortunes on the battlefield.

They have not.

Now, after two years of war, with the Kremlin’s early military stumbles in Ukraine receding in memory, the mood in Russia is increasingly upbeat.

“The word ‘victory’ is everywhere in Moscow these days,” a New York Times Russia correspondent, Valerie Hopkins, reported recently .

The students’ tour came just three days before Russia celebrated Victory Day, which commemorates the Nazi defeat in World War II. But they, like other Russians venturing out into the cold that day, were relishing their country’s more recent military successes.

Victory Park was originally built to commemorate the Russian defeat of Napoleon. It also displays military equipment from the Second World War.

The big draw when the students were visiting, however, were the NATO tanks captured in Ukraine. Many, including the Abrams, were seized in February, when Avdiivka, a longtime Ukrainian military stronghold, fell to the Russians .

“There has been so much talk about these Abrams, about these Leopards,” marveled one onlooker as he took in the neutered Western behemoths sitting idle in the Russian snow.

“They are all standing here,” he said. “We are looking at them.”

EU ambassadors have agreed to formally begin accession negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova later this month.

The Belgian EU presidency said talks would start on 25 June.

According to the presidency, the decision should be given the nod by finance and economy ministers at a meeting next Friday.

The European Council decided to open accession negotiations with Ukraine in December last year.

Last week, the EU said both countries had met the criteria needed to start formal discussions, with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal revealing his hope that talks would start this month.

Hot off the heels of his appearance at the G7 leaders' meeting in Italy, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has arrived in Switzerland for the Ukraine peace summit aimed at exploring ways of ending the war in his country.

World leaders including Rishi Sunak, French President Emmanuel Macron and US vice president Kamala Harris are set to join Mr Zelenskyy at the summit.

But it's expected to fall short of its aim to isolate Moscow, with China among a group of countries choosing not to attend.

G7 nations have reaffirmed their commitment to support Ukraine "for as long as it takes".

A final statement from the summit in Italy saw leaders affirm their plan to finance a $50bn loan for Kyiv using "extraordinary revenues" from frozen Russian assets.

They said the move sends an "unmistakable signal" to Vladimir Putin as the war rages on.

Volodydmyr Zelenskyy called the decision a" vital step forward in providing sustainable support for Ukraine in winning this war".

Mr Putin, meanwhile, has condemned the freezing of Russian assets as "theft" and has vowed it "will not go unpunished".

According to US and French officials, the money could be in Kyiv's hands before the end of the year.

Ukraine has attacked Russia's border region of Belogorod, killing five people, according to Russian officials.

Regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said two bodies were pulled from the rubble of an apartment block in Shebekino.

News agencies cited emergency services as saying a third body was later found, after the alleged shelling caused a stairwell to collapse.

Reports also said a driver was killed when a drone hit their car in a nearby village, while a woman was reportedly killed in her home as it was hit by rocket fire in the village of Oktyabrsky.

Sky News cannot independently verify the reports.

Ukrainian forces have struck a military airfield in Russia, targeting warplanes and glide-bomb facilities used to launch deadly attacks against Ukraine, a security source has revealed.

The source said the operation last night was part of a "sustained campaign to degrade the Russian Air Force" just as Ukraine has done with Russia's Black Sea Fleet.

Satellite imagery shared by the source purported to show two SU-34 fighter-bombers at the Morozovsk airbase in southern Russia as well as a white structure before the attack.

A second image is purported to show the aftermath, with both aircraft and the structure destroyed.

There has been no official confirmation about the strikes from Ukraine.

They came battered and worn by battles back home for a few days by the sea seeking sanctuary and solace in a wellness resort turned summit venue.

The G7 leaders will leave fortified by some surprisingly robust diplomatic progress but potentially terminal doubts remain for the alliance.

They have sent Russia a clear message. They may individually be on borrowed time as leaders but the West  has Ukraine's back for as long as it takes.

And China's been on the sharp end of some particularly proactive diplomacy too.

Two signature deals send billions more aid to Ukraine. The allies overcame stark differences between themselves to forge a creative deal that uses interest from frozen Russia banking assets to send fifty billion more dollars to Kyiv by the year's end.

In Moscow the Russians did not conceal their fury at the prospect of their money being used against them.

And a ten year bilateral security pact between America and Ukraine is another blow to Vladimir Putin. He started this war to deter the expansion of the western military alliance. Yet again it is having the opposite effect. The pact is a bridge to Ukraine joining NATO, even if that is many many years still away.

The G7 warned China in a number of ways. The final communique criticised its belligerence in the South China Sea and admonished Beijing for quietly helping Putin's war effort by trading dual use products that could help bolster his war effort.

But the composition of this summit was also a message for Beijing. The G7 invited pretty much the entire G20 here except for China.  If you want to be in the club they were saying, not very subtly, then stop conniving with Putin and play by our rules. 

In Beijing that will be infuriating.

The leaders have seemed all the better for their spell in the sunshine, spirits lifted before going home to face the music. 

But what they cant do is dispel doubts about their future and that of the alliance.

Security pacts tend to survive changes of administration, Ukraine will have its $50bn by year's end.

But what will the G7 look like when they next meet a year from now?

Donald Trump looks increasingly likely to win the US election and Joe Biden's performance here will have nothing to reassure the allies. He has seemed vacant and distracted at times, older than ever.

Trump has no time for multilateral organisations. That was made abundantly clear in his first term in office. In his transactional zero sum game world view they make no sense.

A year from now he could be six months into destroying NATO, deserting Ukraine and dismantling the G7. 

First time round for all his puerile antics, he could do limited damage at these summits contained by the likes of Merkel and Macron both at the height of their powers.

Olaf Scholz is no Merkel and may be gone by then, joining Sunak, Kishida and Trudeau perhaps too heading for the history books.  Macron is on the way to being a lame duck president hamstrung by a far right national assembly if current polling is correct.

The alliance is in peril like never before, however successful they've been holding it together for now.

Earlier we reported comments by Volodymyr Zelenskyy that a ceasefire offer put forward by Vladimir Putin cannot be trusted.

In an interview with our Italian partner network Sky TG24 , Mr Zelenskyy warned the Russian president would not stop his offensive, even if Ukraine agreed to hand over the regions Russia claims to have annexed.

He also drew a comparison between Mr Putin and Adolf Hitler's Nazi policies of expansion before the Second World War, saying:  "It is the same thing that Hitler used to do... this is why we should not trust these messages."

Three Russian servicemen have reportedly died following an ammunition explosion in a Russian town about four miles north of the Ukraine border.

Shells from a thermobaric warhead, also called an aerosol bomb, exploded in Shebekino, as reported by the Russian Telegram channel Astra.

"Astra's sources in the region's emergency services reported that in the evening, ammunition from the Russian Solntsepyok MRLS thermobaric weapon system exploded in the suburb of Shebekino," the report said.

The cause of the explosion is unknown, but preliminary reports indicate it was "spontaneous". 

Despite Astra's sources claiming three Russian servicemen died in the explosion, Shebekino's governor reported there were zero injuries . 

Ten private households and one car were damaged, they said. 

In a show of unity aimed at Vladimir Putin, G7 leaders meeting in Italy this week finally agreed to a deal to use profits from frozen Russian assets to provide around $50bn (£40bn) worth of support to Ukraine.

And in another significant announcement, Joe Biden signed a 10-year bilateral security deal between the US and Ukraine which Kyiv is calling "historic".

President Biden and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelensky signed a 10-year security agreement Thursday that they hailed as a milestone in relations between their countries, but that alone was not enough to stop Zelensky from wondering how much longer he could count on America’s support.

Zelensky also said his country “urgently” needed additional air defense systems to protect Ukrainians and the nation’s infrastructure from Russia’s continued bombardment.

The leaders signed the agreement on the sidelines of the annual Group of 7 summit, held this year in Italy, and Biden said the goal “is to strengthen Ukraine’s defense and deterrence capabilities.”

Zelensky said at a joint news conference that the signing made for a “truly historic day,” but he also wondered about the durability of support from the United States and other allies.

Ukraine’s president said the right question to ask is “for how long the unity in the world will remain? The unity in the U.S., together with European leaders” and how it will be influenced by the outcome of elections this year in many of those countries.

Germany is one of the five countries that have promised an additional Patriot system for Ukraine.

Ukraine will receive the first payments sometime this year, a U.S. official said. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity to preview the agreement, which will be included in the G-7 leaders’ communique on Friday.

It wasn’t just Ukraine that occupied the allies’ attention.

Biden announced that Italy was joining a G7 initiative to provide development assistance to Africa, which is meant as a bulwark against growing Chinese influence on the continent . Biden said $60 billion mobilized by the U.S. and the G7 is proof “democracies can deliver,” as the U.S. and its allies warn that China’s investments come attached with geopolitical and economic demands.

The G-7 summit opened Thursday in Italy’s picturesque Puglia region in the south with leaders meeting in private as they discussed the war in Gaza, support for Ukraine and other mutual concerns.

The group of industrialized democracies — the U.S., Britain, Canada, France, German, Italy and Japan, plus European governing bodies — meets annually. Italy holds the rotating presidency this year, and far-right Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is hosting.

The trip is Biden’s second outside the U.S. in as many weeks; he was in France last week for a state visit and ceremonies commemorating the 80th anniversary of the D-day landings in World War II.
