Kasol is a small village in the Parvati Valley of Himachal Pradesh, India. It is a popular tourist destination because of its scenic beauty and its proximity to the Himalayas.

1. Manikaran Sahib

Manikaran Sahib, a famous pilgrimage site located just a few kilometers from Kasol is among the most popular places to visit in Kasol. It is believed that Manu recreated human life here after a flood, thus the name Manikaran.

Furthermore, according to Sikhs, Guru Nanak visited this place with his disciple Bhai Mardana. Hence, Manikaran is a place holy to both Hindus and Sikhs! In addition to this, Hot springs are also a major attraction here!

2. Nature Park Kasol

Nature Park offers a peaceful atmosphere in the hills of Kasol. You can listen to the songs of birds, and the rustling of leaves, and feel the cool mountain breeze on your face!

Nature Park is a great location for jogging and strolling while being shaded by towering pine trees. Visitors can also relish some unique foods if they want because the region is accessible to numerous well-known cafes.

Kutla is a quaint little town that has just a couple of travelers going towards the village from the town of Tosh. The trek to Kutla takes around 1.5 hours of steep climbing but the majestic view and the clean air are definitely worth it.

A two-hour hike via the winding path from Tosh will lead you to the Kulta Village, which is encircled by the Himalayas looking down at you and is situated in a lush meadow.

In the out-of-the-way village of Kulta, tucked away amid the mountains, you can experience the undisturbed beauty of nature. If you're staying in Tosh then Kutla should definitely be on your itinerary.

4. Trek toward the Glacier Point

The glacier point is a clear meadow from where you can see a mammoth glacier in front of you that will make you feel like the snow-clad mountain is just a fingertip away from you.

Kutla glacier is a fairly easy trip that takes a day to reach from Tosh and takes around 2 hours to accomplish.

You'll be charmed by the pristine beauty of Himachal along the route so it will be worth it. The sound of the river gushing with such an amazing view will make you stay there and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

PS:- You'll always find a dog helping you find the way towards the trek.

Spend some time listening to the burbling of water and basking in the Mountain Sun on the bed of the Parvati River. The river's flow begins at the Man Talai Glacier, runs through Parvati Valley to the north, and then merges with the Beas River close to Kulu.

These three villages are just beside each other and fall on the way to your trek toward the Kheerganga peak. Kalga, Pulga, and Tulga are just in the vicinity of 30 minutes from Barshaini and can easily be reached by walking over the dam on the Parvati river.

The villages have a very rustic look with wooden houses and narrow stone lanes making them perfect for a stop to relax for a while. These villages do have some homestays for staying in as well if you're looking to relax at a secluded spot.

The valley is definitely for the adventurous since reaching the valley takes a mammoth task of trekking a very uphill mountain for around 4 km but the view and the silence from the top are worth it and you'll not feel tired once you're at the top.

Jari is one of the major towns that have access to proper health care and schools but what it also has are some amazing and unique stays that are worth a visit once in your lifetime.

The best dome in Jari would be the itsy bitsy cabin which is a glass dome perfect to watch the sunset and the night sky. This location provides stunning views of the valley, snow-capped mountains, and pine forests.

As the dome is encircled by Deodar trees and the only things you will receive are nature and calm, seemingly the realm of the gods.

The Kullu Manali Airport, located at a distance of 31km from the town is the nearest airport to Kasol. It is well-connected with domestic flights from Delhi and Chandigarh.

If you are looking to experience Kasol is a Non-cliché way, winter is the time to visit. My Winter travel guide for Kasol will help you plan exactly that.

In the last few years, Kasol has emerged as the favourite destination among backpackers, not only from India but from around the world. Therefore, other than a few months, Kasol keeps buzzing with visitors.

While most people plan a visit to Kasol during the peak of summers, I would suggest you visit Kasol during winter. The main reason being, the crowd is less and you get to experience Kasol in an altogether different light.

My Complete Winter Travel Guide for Kasol

Not many years ago, Kasol was just another remote village in Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh that not many people had heard about.

Over the years, the popularity of the destination has increased manifold. This has been primarily because of the easy availability of “Malana Cream”, a type of hashish grown locally. ( Note: consumption & transportation of Hash is illegal in India. In doing so, you can face a hefty fine and jail time)

Well, that isn’t the only reason to visit Kasol. The natural beauty of the region, the beautiful Parvati river and numerous trekking trails are what I suggest you explore on your Kasol visit.

6 Amazing Reasons to Visit Kasol in Winters

Most people visit Kasol during summers (April – June). However, if you ask me, I always suggest people go to Kasol during winter. Well if you are wondering why should you visit Kasol in the summers instead of winters, I can give you at least 6 distinct reasons to do so:

1. There’s far Less Crowd in Winters 

Summer is the time when most people from the neghbouring states visit Himachal to get respite from the heat. As a result of this, the small town becomes extremely crowded at the time, especially during the weekends. Winters are relatively less crowded, except the Christmas-new year time. If you were to ask me, I would suggest January as the best time to visit.

2. You can FInd Accommodation at Low Prices

Since winters are not that crowded in Kasol, the prices of stays are relatively less as compared to the peak season. Therefore, if you are on a tight budget, visit Kasol during the winters and save a lot of money.

3. You can Experience Snowfall

The best part about winters in Kasol is the snowfall. The best time to experience snowfall in Kasol in late December to January end. The snowfall in Kasol is truly magical.

4. The Beauty of Kasol During Winters is Unparalleled- With or Without Snowfall

Winters in Kasol has a hue of its own. The snow-covered ground, the Parvati river and the tall pine trees are breathtakingly beautiful, especially on a sunny day. Even when it’s not snowing, you can witness the splendid golden- brown landscapes.

5. Enjoying Sulphur Spring Baths in Kasol Winters is a Bliss

Kasol is known for Hot Water Springs and winters are the best time to enjoy them. Some of these baths are available in Kasol. Winters in Kasol is a quite different time than summers, not only in terms of the number of visitors but the entire vibe of the place. Here are some of the best things to include in your winter travel guide for Kasol:

Explore the Town

The very first thing to do in Kasol during winters is to go explore the town. Kasol is a small place that you can see in a couple of hours. When I visited in January, there were not many people in Kasol and a lot of shops and cafes were closed. Despite that, the town looked beautiful and serene.

Trek to Tosh Village

When it snows in Kasol, many villages get cut off. However, it is possible to trek up to Tosh village, the last motorable village in Parvati Valley.   Tosh village is one of my favourite places in Himachal and if you are visiting Kasol, this must be a part of your itinerary. 

Take a Short Hike to Chalal

If you are not in the mood for a long trek, I would suggest you take a short hike to Chalal village. Chalal is a quiet hamlet that can be reached in less than an hour. The trek takes you through a pine forest adjacent to the gushing Parvati river. This picturesque hike will make your hike worthwhile.

Enjoy Some Delicious Food at the Cafes

Kasol is quite famous for its cafes that serve a range of food from Israeli to Italian and Indian. However, during winters not all cafes are open. Some of the popular cafes that are open are Evergreen cafe, stone garden, namaste, etc.

Experience Snowfall

This is one of the best experiences you can have in Kasol during winters. The best months to visit Kasol for snowfall are December and January.  Trust me, this is going to be one of your best memories from Kasol.

Relax and Soak in the Warm Winter Sun

The best way to enjoy the winters in Kasol is to just relax and do absolutely nothing. Soak in the beauty of nature and on a sunny day just enjoy the warmth of the winter sun on your bare skin. It is so relaxing!

Click some Splendid Pictures

Winters is also a great time to click some amazing pictures in Kasol. Whether it is the snow-laden mountains, or the clear blue skies, or just the pine forests, the pictures are bound to turn out amazing.

Take a Hot Sulphur Spring Bath

Yes! Kasol has hot springs too. You don’t even have to go to Manikaran or Kheerganga to enjoy a relaxing hot spring bath, you can do that in Kasol as well. In winters, these baths are even more amazing.

Visit Manikaran

Of the few places that are accessible near Kasol, even in deep winters is Manikaran. You can easily visit Manikaran from Kasol. A number of shared taxis are buses that go on that route. And, yes of course in Manikaran you can enjoy the hot springs as well, that too for FREE!

Trek to Kheerganga 

The trek to Kheerganga from Kasol is possible only till December. Once the snowfall begins, it is not advisable to go on the trek. This is because the trail to Kheerganga becomes extremely slippery and dangerous. The trail becomes covered with snow and ice, therefore I would strongly advise against such misadventures.

An Ideal Kasol Itinerary for Winters

If you are travelling to Kasol for the first time and that too in winter, I would suggest that you plan for at least 4 days. Below I have shared with you a 4-day Kasol winter itinerary.

Depending on your starting point, I assume that you reach Kasol in the morning. In order to reach Kasol, you can take any bus that goes towards Manali and then get down at Bhuntar in Kullu.

NOTE: I haven’t included the Kheerganga trek in the itinerary. This is because after snowfall it is not advisable to go on the trek. However, if you are visiting during November or early December, you can surely undertake the trek with some professionals from the region.

Winter Travel Guide for Kasol: Where to Eat & Stay?

While summer in Kasol is buzzing with tourists, winter is a relatively quieter time in Kasol. Owing to the decline in visitors, a lot of places in Kasol shut down during winters, especially after a snowfall. However, there are still plenty of options when it comes to finding eateries and accommodations.

Where to Stay in Kasol in Winters? 

Although most hotels are open in Kasol even during winters, I would suggest that you stay in a homestay for a more authentic experience. There are many homestays in Kasol, that offer accommodation even during snowfall.

The best part about visiting during winters is that you don’t have to pay the surge prices during winters. However, I would suggest the Christmas- New year time, which can be really crowded.

Where to Eat in Kasol During Winters?

Although most cafes remain open during winters, after the snowfall, many of them shut down. Some famous cafes that are open even during the peak winters are  Evergreen cafe, stone garden, namaste, etc.

Other than these you can also get food in the local dhabas and guesthouses.

9 Super Important Tips for Your Kasol Trip During Winters

A Winter Travel Guide for Kasol is incomplete without some handy tips. I have shared below some very important tips for all travellers visiting Kasol during winters. Make sure you follow these:

1. Good & Comfortable Footwear

I cannot emphasise on having a good pair of footwear enough. The first thing you must get if you wish to truly explore Kasol in winter is some good footwear. They should be warm and have a good grip so that you don’t slip on the ice formation.

2. Pack Adequate Warm Clothes

By warm clothes, I mean everything, right from pullovers to socks and from gloves to innerwear. You also must carry a very warm jacket and a muffler to keep yourself warm.

3. Stick to the Known Routes, Do Not Experiment

DO NOT venture out on a trail that is not known. During the winter season, there is a constant danger of wild animals. So, don’t go around exploring unknown trails on your own.

4. Power Bank is a Must Carry

At times of heavy snowfall in the region, power cuts are fairly common. Therefore, I insist that you carry a power bank with you. Charge it whenever you get the time.

5. Carry enough Cash

Don’t rely on ATMs and other card-to-cash services in Kasol for cash during winters. While the ATM can quickly run out of cash during winters, some of the card to cash services at the local travel agents offices may be closed during after snowfall. Therefore, carry adequate cash with you on your Kasol winter trip.

6. Take along your Toiletries & Essentials 

If you are visiting Kasol during winters, I would recommend you carry your essentials and toiletries along. This is especially true for women travellers who must carry along with their menstrual hygiene products, just to be on the safer side.

7. You need Trekking Gear if you Wish to Trek 

The easy and moderate treks including Kheerganga become challenging during winters. This is especially true for treks post snowfall. Because of the ice formation, the treks can become difficult and very slippery due to ice formation.

Therefore, if you wish to go on a trek, you must carry along proper trekking gear as you may not find many providers that provide such facilities during winters. Also, make sure if you are pursuing a trek during winters,  go in a group rather than going alone.

8. Be Careful Near the Parvati River

Although this is true for all the seasons, this point becomes even more relevant during winters. The stones near the river bed can be slippery and dangerous, so try to stay as far away from the river bed as possible.

9. Do Not Venture Out in the Night Alone

Another safety tip I would like to include is that you must try not to venture out alone after sunset. If you have to go, go out in a group. A torch always comes in handy during such times.

Kasol is situated approximately 30 km (19 mi) from Bhuntar and 36 km (22 mi) from Kullu town, the district headquarters, and just 3.5 km away from Manikaran, Kasol holds a significant position in the Parvati Valley.

How to Reach Kasol?

To reach Kasol, you have a few transportation options depending on your location and preferences. Here are the common ways to reach Kasol:

The nearest airport to Kasol is Bhuntar Airport, also known as Kullu-Manali Airport, located approximately 31 kilometers away. Several domestic airlines operate regular flights to Bhuntar from major cities like Delhi and Chandigarh.

After reaching Bhuntar, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to Kasol, which is around a 2-hour journey.

However the most important nearby airport is Chandigarh Airport. The distance between Chandigarh and Kasol is approximately 275 kilometers by road. The journey usually takes around 7 to 8 hours, depending on the traffic and road conditions. You can easily get down here and take a cab or bus to Kasol

There are a ton of different cafés that offer lip-smacking multi-cuisine delicacies to soothe your taste buds. If you are an avid trekker then there are a lot of hiking routes and trails that will excite you.

The vibe of this place is such that one would just relax and admire the serene landscapes while witnessing the river Parvati in its full flow. I am hoping that with my Kasol itinerary for 4 days you will be able to experience the best of this quaint hamlet.

Kasol Itinerary for 4 Days: Where, When & How?

There is no dearth of picturesque places to explore in and around Kasol. There is something in Kasol for everyone. There are beautiful trekking trails for the adventurers , delectable delicacies for the foodies and quaint little villages for those seeking some quiet time in the mountains.

A pre-defined Kasol itinerary can help you explore Kasol in a more efficient manner.  In the current blog, I will be providing you with a detailed Kasol itinerary for 4 days that will give you the basic essence of all that Kasol has to offer.

Here’s a quick run-through of my Kasol Itinerary for 4 days:

I started my Kasol trip from Mumbai by taking a direct flight to Delhi and backpacked across Parvati Valley for 10 days and stayed in Kasol for around 4-days during winters.

There are many things that you can do in and around Kasol . I feel that a minimum 4-days are needed to experience the sheer beauty of this place. This Kasol Itinerary for 4 days also involves a bit of trekking to one most famous and beginner-friendly treks in Himachal which is Kheerganga.

For the sake of convenience, I am assuming that your trip starts from Delhi. Take an overnight bus from Delhi to Bhuntar. Bhuntar is located in Kullu and you can get on any bus that goes towards Manali.

Spend your Day 1 Exploring and Café hopping in Kasol

Reach early morning to Bhuntar and board local buses or cabs going towards Kasol. You can find buses plying to Kasol every half an hour.

Once you reach Kasol,  check into a hostel/hotel/guesthouse . Once you have settled in, head out and roam around the main town and go café hopping.

There are a ton of different Cafes in Kasol and you probably require 2 days to cover all of them. I visited quite a few them and the food was extremely delicious. Bhoj Café, Evergreen Café, Freedom Café, Moondance Café, Jim Morrisons Café, Little Italy, Panj Tara Café are amongst the popular ones in Kasol.

Though cafes predominantly serve Italian and Israeli food, most of them offer multi-cuisine including Indian food in some cafés. Israeli food like hummus, falafel platter, etc. will be readily available and is a must-try when you are in Kasol. Italian food served in most of the cafes is extremely delectable. Apart from Italian and Israeli food, traditional Indian food is also readily available in and around Kasol.

Kasol is also famous for its mouth-watering desserts like cakes, pie, croissants, etc . There quite a few bakeries here which serve these kinds of deserts. Germany bakery being the most popular one out there with its apple pie, cheesecakes being a must-try.

In my opinion, Evergreen Café, Jim Morrisons Café, Little Italy are a must-visit as they serve lip-smacking food. Personally, my favourite is Jim Morrisons café as the café inspired by Jim Morrison the lead singer of the classic rock band “The doors”, classic rock numbers are played during the day. The café has a very chill vibe to it and is heaven for vegetarians as the café serves only vegetarian food. To reach this café you would have to hike uphill for 10 minutes from Hotel Sandhya.

Enjoy your evening near the bank of river Parvati or spend some time in the woods near Kasol.

Chalal is one of the easiest and the most accessible treks around Kasol . It will take only about half an hour to reach Chalal from Kasol. The entire route is scenic and covered with pines and deodars. 

Brace yourself for some short treks on Day 2

Leave Kasol and hike towards Chalal which takes only 30 mins. It is one of the shortest and easiest hiking trails around Kasol.

If you are into trekking, you can head towards Rasol from Chalal. Rasol is another unexplored village in Parvati Valley. You can easily trek from Chalal to Rasol village in about 1-2 hours.

Spend the night either in Rasol or Chalal/Katagla. Kasol can get a bit too crowded sometimes so Chalal can be a perfect place to beat the crowd.

Be the adventurer and trek to Kheerganga on Day 3

Start early and head towards Barshaini, Barshaini is a small village and the last point till which there is a  proper road in Parvati Valley. Barshaini can act as a base for many treks including the famous Kheerganga. If you love to trek then head to Kheerganga from Barshaini.

Otherwise, head to Tosh or Kalga. Tosh is the last motorable village in Parvati Valley. Surrounded by lush green mountains with pine, deodar, oak trees, it offers a magnificent view of these mountains. You can read my complete backpacking guide to Tosh in this blog . You can also visit Kalga, which is another lesser-known village of Parvati valley. You can find a few accommodations here.

You can spend the night at Kheerganga, Tosh or Kalga depending on where you decide to visit.

Relax in Manikaran before you head back on Day 4

If you are at Kheerganga then descend to Barshaini by afternoon and head to Manikaran. If you are at Tosh and Kalga, then spend some time and explore the villages around and come back to Barshaini and head to Manikaran.

Manikaran is a Sikh and Hindu pilgrimage centre that attracts many visitors. Take a dip in the hot water springs here and visit the temples and the Gurudwara.

There is an HRTC bus at 6.30 pm from Manikaran to ISBT Kashmere gate. You can also take overnight buses of your choice for Delhi

Manikaran is a Sikh and Hindu pilgrimage centre near Kasol that attracts many visitors. Here you can take a dip in the hot water springs and visit the temples and the Gurudwara.

Complete Cost Breakdown for this 4 Day Kasol Trip

One of the main reasons why people head to Kasol and nearby places is because it is light on the pocket as there are is no scarcity of decent budget options for accommodation except for a few months when it is peak season. The internal transport in and around Kasol is also very cheap.

Accommodation is fairly inexpensive in and around Kasol (except peak season prices are high to due high tourist influx) and will cost around 500-800 INR per day depending on what you choose. If you choose Backpackers hostel that it can come down to around 300-350 INR per dorm bed and guest house and will cost anywhere between 500-800 INR.

If you have someone to share a room with, then guesthouses and hotels can be a decent option as well. You can opt for luxury hotels, and guesthouses in Kasol but your cost will go up. Kasol also has a lot of campsites around the bank of the river Parvati. But they tend to be a little bit more expensive than Hostels, guesthouses, and hotels.

The only thing that is a little bit expensive is the food. If you are going to visit the famous cafés in Kasol then it will cost you a bit but trust me it is worth it since the food is just amazing here.

Food is going to be a bit expensive here, So I would say it will be around 500-700 INR per day depending on how many cafes you visit. Though it is a little bit on the expensive side, trust me, you will love all the Multi-cuisine delicacies that Cafés in Kasol offer.

Here I am assuming that you will be travelling from Delhi by bus and are going to stay for 3-nights in Kasol. You will not only be spending money on food, accommodation n Kasol but also on reaching nearby places.

4 Wonderful and cheap stays in Kasol for budget travellers

The accommodation shouldn’t be a problem as there are plenty of budget hostels, hotel, and guest houses. As soon as you enter Kasol, you will spot clusters of Budget hotels and guesthouses the rooms there are not fancy but are decent enough.

They can be priced anywhere between 500 – 800 INR . The prices can be exorbitantly high during the peak season even for even basic rooms. I stayed in a couple of hotels in that area that were decent and were priced at INR 500, but it was in February which can be considered as off-season and it did feel like off-season as the foreign travellers were almost absent.

For all you backpackers and solo travellers, backpacker hostels will come to your rescue as there a couple of popular hostel chains in Kasol. Some of the best hostels here are:

The Parvati river in Kasol might look harmless, but do not make a mistake of undermining its flow. Do not venture deep into the river, it can be fatal.

The most cost-effective way of reaching Kasol

There is no direct bus for Kasol from either Delhi or Chandigarh. Therefore, for a first time visitor, reaching Kasol can be a  bit confusing.

Kasol can be only reached by road. For those making a solo trip to Kasol or are on a tight budget, Volvo buses will be your best bet. First, you need to board buses going towards Manali. There are a lot of Ordinary and Volvo buses of both private operators and HRTC plying on Delhi – Manali route from ISBT Kashmere gate.

Then you need to get down at Bhuntar since this is where the road to Kasol in Parvati valley diverts. From Bhuntar you need to take to local buses or shared cabs going towards Kasol.

There are a couple of HRTC buses from Delhi in the evening that directly go towards Manikaran. I n case you don’t want to do a break journey and save time then is the perfect option (Kasol comes before Manikaran). Of course, there are only two buses so it might not be convenient for everybody.

If have self-driven cars or private vehicles, then just make sure you take the diversion at Bhuntar. On average Delhi to Kasol bus journey would take around 13-15 hours.

When is the best time to visit Kasol for you?

This is very subjective as this would depend on what kind of colours and landscapes you want to see. But one thing is for sure the weather remains very comfortable throughout the year except for cold winters which start from late November to early March.

If you time your visit to Kasol during off-season months like January, February, March in winter, or in September, October, November during Autumn, then you would enjoy it a lot more as there would be no crazy tourist rush when compared to Summer months or the period of Christmas and new year. There would be no problems whatsoever for Backpackers and Budget travellers as the accommodation prices would not be exorbitantly high.

 Is Kasol as safe for visitors as they say?

Kasol is very safe irrespective of gender. In fact, all of the Himachal is very safe and you will find lots of solo travellers backpacking around Kasol and Parvati valley. As you might already know Kasol is infamous for people looking for high-quality hashish called ‘Malana Cream’ , so please make sure you don’t engage in such illicit activities as possession of Hashish is illegal and you can even be arrested.

Apart from this, locals are very amiable and approachable, and they will help you out in any situation, so don’t hesitate and approach them if you need help. While hiking and trekking around this pristine valley avoid taking shortcuts unless accompanied by a professional guide.

A Kasol weekend trip is a must for those looking for a quick escape to nature.

While it is true that Kasol is ‘not what it used to be,’ the place still has the same pull for a lot of people. It is because if you ignore the crowds of tourists, you can still capture the same feelings. These feelings include the beautiful green forested mountains, with the Parvati river flowing in the middle of the valley and little houses popping up on faraway lands. It is surely a scene that is always welcoming.

What is the best time to visit Kasol on weekend?

A Kasol weekend trip can be accomplished at any time you fancy in the year! I would personally avoid Monsoon season, as the hills are sensitive, and you might get stuck due to landslides, etc.

But, if you fancy the winter season – then go for it, and if summer is your jam, there’s a tonne to do. Of course, a lot would also depend on what you want to do when you get to Kasol. For example, visiting the Kheerganga trek will not be possible in winter .

If chilling and enjoying nature is on the cards – then season shouldn’t be a bar. But, if you want to party and attend a rave or two – the best bet would be May – July.

Can you make a weekend trip to Kasol?

You will be able to make a trip to Kasol in 3 days. So, yes, if the idea is to visit Kasol and come back, then a weekend trip to Kasol is possible.

With that said – Kasol is, of course, a must-visit and re-visit (and as many times as you can!) – because Parvati Valley beckons ! Kasol, in particular, and the entire Parvati Valley, in general, is not a mere destination. It is a Himalayan experience that leaves you in awe, pushes you to live, slows you down to notice, and leaves you with #majorfeels.

Kasol Weekend Trip – A Perfect Itinerary

So, how do you visit Mini-Israel aka Parvati Valley at every chance you get?

Day 0 – Getting Started

Take an overnight bus from Delhi to reach Bhuntar in the AM. Try reaching around 7-9 AM.

Day 1 – Exploring Kasol

Take a bus from Bhuntar to Manikaran in the morning and get off at Kasol. The first bus from Bhuntar for Manikaran via Kasol leaves at 6 AM and then hourly after that. Alternatively, you can hail a private/shared cab from Bhuntar itself. The 31 km distance from Bhuntar to Kasol will take around 1.5 hours in the bus or an hour by taxi.

Travel Tip : You can also plan a budget trip to Kasol if you are short on budget.

Venture out and explore the many cafes nestled in the hills and relax where the vibe is as per your taste. Exploring cafes is the best activity to do in Kasol, and honestly, I have spent quite a few vacations doing just this and nothing else when in Kasol.

It has a charm of its own – the maximum chill that you can imagine. Just stare out into the snow-capped mountains and the music of the Parvati river for your pleasure and peace. Of course, with just a day at hand, it will be difficult to do treks in the Parvati Valley which needs more days.

What about any hikes?

If you’re feeling like changing locations, exploring the mountains – then an evening Chalal trek is on the cards. Chalal is a deeper holiday experience and the intense connection it provides with nature is indescribable. There are a couple of cute cafés in the little hamlet that is located JUST on the river itself. So dig into your thoughts along the river while munching on some incredible delicacies (probably Israeli). Head back to Kasol after indulging yourself in some natural therapy.

Now is the time to relax (as if that’s not what we have been doing the entire Kasol weekend trip!) and unwind. Head on to a beautiful riverside café with some live music to groove. Head on to your hotel for a cozy night in. Or, better yet, chill and enjoy the night skies for as long as they can keep you mesmerized (Eternity for me, you?)

Day 2 – Exploring Parvati Valley

Today, you get to explore the valley further. Take a pick of either a day trip to Tosh , Kheerganga, Manikaran or Malana and have a ball . All three places except Manikaran require some trekking (or extensive for some) – so choose accordingly. I would suggest spending the entire day at these locations and only returning at night to your digs. There are tonnes of things to do in Parvati Valley.

You should always carry your water bottle and refill it as many times as you need water. It will not only keep you hydrated always, but you will also help in saving the Himalayas from plastic garbage. Remember, every tiny step counts and your step in this direction can help save the Himalayas too !! 🙂 🙂

Day 3 – Kasol & Home Base

On your final day – get crackin’ with some retail therapy. Stroll through the local flea market to pick up souvenirs from the trip. You’ll also be able to get your hands on some semi-precious stones, and other trinkets.

Of course, coming to the land famous (infamous, sometimes!) for smoking pot – there is a lot of mainstream cultural reverence for Shivji and Bob Marley alike! Clothing including caps, pullovers, coats, t-shirts is available in plentiful.

Grab some delicious food to hog on before catching the bus / hailing a cab to Bhuntar. From there, choose your mode of transportation back to your home base. Finally, bid adieu to this land of Himachal only to return soon.

BONUS – Must-Visit Cafes in Kasol

I wouldn’t let you hanging when it comes to deciding where to eat in Kasol. I am a firm believer that the MOST important part of any trip is food. Food is a way to be introduced to the culture, the vibe of the place. I strongly believe that without food, a journey isn’t complete, my friend.

• Buddha Place : This my favorite place in Kasol – primarily because of its location. This tiny little café is situated right on the river. The view makes up for the limited menu.
• Stone Garden Café: The cafe serves delicious food and overlooks all the action on the main street. It even has live music – always a plus. Anything Israeli is delicious here. Also, bonus (within a bonus!) – it serves alcohol.
• Jim Morrison Café : A place that is synonymous with the Kasol Experience. From good food to excellent music, from the scrumptious food to lots to do – Jim Morrison has you covered.
• Evergreen Café: This café is evergreen and has been around forever. Trippy vibes, trance music all accompanied by good food – it is wonderful, a must-visit!
• Freedom Café: Freedom shows up on this list for being open late at night! It also has excellent coffee.

Kheerganga Trek From Kasol – Complete Travel Guide

Nestled at an altitude of 2956 meters (9678 ft.) and surrounded by the Himalayan mountain range, Kheerganga or Khirganga is a scenic trekking destination from Kasol at Parvati valley in Himachal Pradesh, India. As per locals, Kheerganga has spiritual significance and is known as the ‘abode of Lord Shiva’.

Kheerganga Trek Overview

About kheerganga.

Kasol to Kheerganga trek involves Barshaini (also known as Barsheni), Kalga, and Tosh as starting points. The distance covered is around 12 Km which usually takes 4-6 hours to complete, depending on the capability of the trekkers. Most part of the trek is pretty straightforward. Still, some can be a little difficult and risky for beginners due to steep stairs, slippery paths, and precipices.

The best things about Kheerganga are the surrounding scenic view, forest trek, and a hot water spring. Its beauty is incomparable in different seasons. While the temperature reaches 26 degrees Celsius in the summer (May-June), the winters (December-February) are colder, and there is often snowfall. However, you can trek to Kheerganga from Kasol at any time of the year according to your preference.

The Mythology About Kheerganga

Kheerganga is an ancient pilgrimage site. The name “Kheerganga” comes from two words- “kheer”, which means a slurry sweet dish made of milk, and “Ganga” means a river of great importance.

It is said that from Satya-yuga till now, Shiva Parvati and Kartika have been living here. By the grace of Shiva and Parvati, Kheer (usually made by boiling milk) flowed here. That is why the place is called “Kheerganga”.

In order not to quarrel over the kheer, it was turned into hot water by the grace of Parasurama in Kaliyuga. Bathing in this water is virtuous. Also, the Kartikswamy cave is located 60 meters away from the hot spring. Now it is forbidden to enter the cave, but pilgrims can still visit there.

How To Reach Kheerganga From Kasol?

The best option to reach Kasol is availing of the AC Volvo Bus service from New Delhi or Chandigarh. The distance is roughly 520 Km which needs an overnight journey. The nearest airport to Kasol is Kullu–Manali Airport, Bhuntar, just 23 Km away. You can get both public transport and private cars to reach Kasol.

Once you have arrived in Kasol, you can book a cab or ride on a bus to reach Barshaini in 40 minutes. The distance between Kasol and Barshaini bus stand is 17 Km, and the trek to Kheerganga starts from this point.

Kheerganga Trek Routes

There are three different trekking routes from Barshaini to Kheerganga, covering a 9 to 14 Km distance. Every route is best for their unique experience and adventure. So, let’s explore!

Route 1: Barishaini to Kheerganga via Nakthan

Nakthan is known for its 460 MW hydropower project and its surrounding scenic village. After passing the bridge on the Parvati river, take a left turn to reach the Nakthan village. Follow the Barsheni road to reach Rudranag which meets another trail from Kalga. The path is well-marked and easy to follow.

This route is easier to descend from Kheerganga than other ones. The distance from Kheerganga is the shortest on this route, usually taking 3-4 hours to complete. If you are an experienced trekker, it will be the best option. The famous Pin Parvati trek starts at Kheerganga, and most trekkers prefer this route to save time.

Route 2: Barishaini to Kheerganga via Tosh

This trek route connects Barshaini to Kheerganga via Tosh. This small village is surrounded by mountains and the Tosh river (nallah), which meets the Parvati river near Pulga village. This picturesque village is a perfect place to visit for trekkers and hikers. The only disadvantage is that this trek route adds an additional 2.5 Km to the course mentioned above.

If you plan to trek to Kheerganga from Tosh, you must follow a different trail that meets the previous route 1 near Nakthan village. You can stay overnight at Tosh and begin your adventure the following day to trek to Kheerganga from Kasol.

Route 3: Barishaini to Kheerganga via Kalga

Trekking to Kheerganga via Kalga village is most scenic in dense forests, waterfalls, and eye-soothing greeneries. Watching the dance of light through the shadow of giant trees is mesmerizing. You won’t get such a beautiful form of nature in any of the previous trek routes. If you love photography, trekking to Kheerganga via Kalga won’t disappoint you. This is the best trek route to Kheerganga.

Previously, this 10 Km long route was lesser known to trekkers, and there are reports of people missing in the dense forest. Presently, it is getting popular, and you can follow the trail easily. However, hiring a guide from Kalga is highly recommended as there are some difficult bridges on waterfalls and steep areas where beginners might need an expert hand.

Kheerganga Trek Itinerary

The Kheerganga trek can be covered in two days with one night stay at the camping site. However, if you are travelling from Manali or Delhi to Kasol, it can be exhausting to trek on the same day. For this reason, staying at Kalga or Tosh for the night and starting trekking the next morning is advisable. In this way, you will be refreshed and able to enjoy the adventure more. So, it will be best to plan a 3-day-2-night itinerary unless you plan to complete it in 2 days.

Itinerary 1 (Kheerganga Trek Direct From Barshaini)

• Starting Point: Barshaini Bus Stop
• Endpoint: Kheerganga Camping
• No. Of Days: 2
• Distance: 12 Km
• Completion Time: 4-6 hours

Day 1 (Trek To Kheerganga And Camp Overnight)

• The Beginning : The adventurous trek from Kasol to Kheerganga begins at Barshaini, located on the bank of the Parvati river. Just after the hydel power project, follow the Barshaini road or cross the Nakthan bridge to reach the Nakthan village. Continue trekking on the road to reach Rudranag. Then cross the scenic Rudranag bridge and start trekking in the forest. Another Kheerganga trekking trail from Kalga meets this route near the bridge.
• Adventurous Experience : Hike towards the forest through the apple orchards and meadows. As the journey advances, you will see sky-piercing pine forests surrounded by mountains. You will cross several waterfalls on wooden bridges on the way, which is a thrilling experience. You can rest for a few minutes by the falls and enjoy the beautiful surrounding with lush green forest.

• Food and Drinks : There are some stalls on the trail where you can get refreshing drinks like mango shakes, watermelon juice, tea, coffee, cold drinks, etc. You can also buy namkeen, chips, and biscuits from these stalls and proceed.
• The Excitement : Once reaching Kheerganga, immerse yourself in the hot spring, relax and enjoy the beautiful sunset over the snow-capped Himalayan mountains. After checking in at your camp, keep the rucksack and other trekking essentials well-packed and enjoy the evening.
• Evening Enjoyment : Most camp operators serve dinners from 8 PM to 10 PM. You can get roti, chana masala, mixed veg, and sometimes paneer. The food is delicious, but please do not expect restaurant-like non-veg food here. Most camping operators arrange music systems, bonfires, and barbecues on request.

Day 2 (Return To Barshaini From Kheerganga)

• Do Not Miss The Sunrise : The beauty of sunrise from Kheerganga is incomparable. In the early morning, the sun plays hide and seek behind the Himalayan mountain range, colouring the sky red. At around 7 AM, the sun rises above the mountains with its magical rays spread across Kheerganga camps.
• Have Breakfast And Pack Your Bags : After witnessing the spectacular sunrise, return to your camp and pack your bags for return. Most camping operators provide breakfast from 8 AM. So, have breakfast, refill your water bottles, contact your guide, and prepare to check out the camp.
• Bid Goodbye : After everything is arranged, bid goodbye to Kheerganga and descend down. Some alternative shortcuts take less time but can be risky. You should not attempt them without the help of a guide. The surrounding forest and trekking trails are the same as you crossed when trekking to Kheerganga from Kasol.

Itinerary 2 (Trek To Kheerganga Via Kalga)

Day 1 (Arrive at Kalga and Stay Overnight)

• Arrive And Explore Kalga Village : Unlike the previous itinerary of the Kheerganga trek, arrive at the Kalga village from Kasol via the Barshaini bus stand. After crossing the hydropower project, turn right and hike uphill to reach Kalga. It is a small scenic village located in the lap of Parvati valley, surrounded by pine forests and misty mountains. You can relax for the day, roaming around the apple orchards and organic farms of Kalga. If you have sufficient time, hike to Pulga and Tulga- two small villages with beautiful sights.

• Stay Overnight In Kalga : You can stay at Holy Cow Cafe, Evening Star Homestay, Gypsy House Cafe, The Forest Park Homestay, Hilltop Homestay, or Tafreegram to have the best experience. All these homestays offer all basic amenities, including a clean bedroom, hygienic toilet, hot water, bonfire facility, and delicious breakfast, lunch, and dinner. A double-bed bedroom at Kalga costs ₹800-₹3000 depending on the facilities and meal packages. The rooms with an attached bath are priced higher.

Day 2 (Trek To Kheerganga From Kalga)

• Start Trekking In the Early Morning : After having delicious food and a night of peaceful sleep, it is always the best option to start trekking to Kheerganga from Kalga in the early morning. The whole trail lies inside the forest, so the journey would be much more comfortable and enjoyable than any other route. Like the previous itinerary, you can refresh yourself with juices, shakes, and foods available in the small shops open en route.

• Reach Kheerganga And Camp : Depending on your capability, you will reach Kheerganga after 4-6 hours of trekking. On the way, enjoy the beauty of the waterfalls, Parvati river, and green forest to make the Kheerganga trek worthy of your precious time. On reaching Kheerganga, do not forget to immerse yourself in the hot spring to drain the tiredness and rejuvenate your body. It is a fantastic experience to see the sunset from this place. Next, check into your camp and keep your luggage in a proper place.
• Relax, Enjoy And Stay Overnight : Enjoy music and snacks at Kheerganga camping in the evening. You will get dinner from 8 PM to 10 PM with a drinking water facility for 24 hours. After completing dinner, stargazing can be an exciting activity as you can clearly see the Milky Way and surrounding thousands of stars with bare eyes. Use your camera, and adjust the ISO, aperture, shutter speed, and metering to capture mind-blowing night sky photos. After that, sleep well in the tent and prepare for return the following morning.

Day 3 (Return Trek From Kheerganga To Barshaini)

• Enjoy The Morning Glory : In the next morning, do not forget to witness the beautiful sunrise at Kheerganga. You can also get back to the hot spring for another bath or explore the surroundings.
• Have Breakfast And Pack Your Things : After enjoying the morning glory of the heavenly place, get down to your camp and grab breakfast. Then pack your bag properly and check out. Climbing down from Kheerganga is more manageable and should take less time than you needed upon arrival.
• Return To Kasol : Instead of returning to Kalga, go to the Barshaini bus stand directly and avail of the bus or car service to return to Kasol. The distance between Kasol and Barshaini is 16 Km, so it should not take more than 40 minutes. Once reaching Kasol, always prefer the Volvo bus service to go to Delhi or Chandigarh.

• Arrive Tosh From Kasol : Just like Kalga, Tosh is an offbeat tourist destination in the Parvati valley of Himachal Pradesh. Instead of dropping you off at the Barshaini bus stand, ask your cab driver to get you to Tosh, just 3.5 Km away.
• Book A Homestay And Explore : Once reaching the village, book a homestay for the day, relax and adjust your body to avoid high altitude sickness. • Stay Overnight At Tosh : After exploring the surrounding of Tosh, return to your homestay in the evening. Most homestays in Tosh provide dinner around 8 PM. Grab your dinner and rest for the night. Then wake up in the early morning to watch the magical beauty of Parvati valley.

Day 2 (Trek To Kheerganga From Tosh)

• Leave Tosh For Kheerganga : The morning at Tosh is very pleasant with comfortable weather and temperature. Start your day with the chirping of birds and burbling of the Parvati river that call you for a wild adventure. You can get your breakfast by 8 AM and start trekking to Kheerganga by 9 AM, or you can leave by 6 AM and get your breakfast on the way.
• Enjoy Your Trekking Adventure : As the distance of Tosh from Kheerganga is roughly 14 Km, it will take approximately 4-6 hours, depending on the ability and experience of the trekkers. First, you need to reach Barsheni, then follow any routes via Kalga or Nakthan villages. Both trails are adventurous and enjoyable.

• Reach Kheerganga Camping : The last few kilometres of this trekking route can be difficult for some trekkers as the trail is steep. After following the path and crossing several waterfalls and bridges, you will get a glimpse of Kheerganga camping. Check-in your camp, keep your backpack inside the tent and take a bath in the famous hot water spring. There are separate areas for males and females, so everyone can immerse themselves in draining out the stress and pain.
• Evening Entertainment And Overnight Stay: After bathing in the hot water spring, return to your tent and chill out in the magnificent sunset across the mountains. Day 3 (Return From Kheerganga To Barshaini)

• The Picturesque View Of Kheerganga : In the morning, watch the sunrise and enjoy the magnificent landscape of Kheerganga. Go a slight uphill from your camp to get the best view of the campsite surrounded by mountains. After photography, return to your camp and pack your backpack. In the meantime, your breakfast will be ready. After filling your stomach, start trekking downhill- inside the forest.
• The Return Trek : The return journey from Kheerganga is comparatively easier and would take less time to complete. You will view the beauty of the same forest and mountains from a different angle. If you have trekked via Nakthan, try the Kalga route and vice versa. Take your time, avoid shortcuts and stay safe when returning to Kasol from Kheerganga.

Best Time For Kheerganga Trekking

Anyone can trek to Kheerganga throughout the year, as Parvati valley offers unique beauty in different seasons. Summer (March to June) is the most preferable time for Kheerganga trekking as the trekkers will get sunny yet comfortable weather (Avg. Temperature: 16°C 20°C) with minimum possibility of rainfall. However, accommodation, food, and transport rates are the highest at this time.

On the other hand, the trekking trail and Kheerganga get covered with thick snow during the winter (October to February) . The temperature drops (Temperature: -11°C to 12°C), and the path becomes slippery and unpredictable. Unless you are an experienced trekker, winter is less preferable than summer to trek to Kheerganga from Kasol.

Monsoon (July to September) is an adventurous season to trek to Kheerganga. At this time, nature gets soaked with raindrops (Avg. rainfall in monsoon: 1000 mm) and becomes greener and more soothing. However, the path becomes slippery, and many waterfalls start flowing over the trail, making the trekking difficult.

Considering all the seasons, summer, especially the months of April, May, and June, is the best time to visit Kheerganga . During these months, you will get clear weather and comfortable temperature with the least rainfall. The trail is relatively dry, and you can enjoy the spectacular view during your trek. After reaching Kheerganga, the breathtaking view of the Himalayas would surely stun you.

Kheerganga trekking in summer is highly recommended for beginner trekkers as the journey would be easier for them. However, if you are a reasonably experienced trekker and have not got the fun of trekking in rain or snow previously, winter and monsoon will be ideal for you.

Where To Stay At Kheerganga?

There are plenty of options to stay in Kheerganga. However, do not expect hotel-like facilities as all the accommodations are inside camping tents. There is a common dormitory stay option; however, if you have family or friends, you may like to book private accommodation inside a tent for 2, 4, or 6 persons. Depending on the size of the tents, all the accommodations are priced in the range of ₹500-₹1500 in different seasons. There is also a Dharamshala or ashram where you can get cheaper stay options.

Sunshine Himalayan Camp, Kheerganga Hike Camps, Woodland Camp, and Om Shanti Camps are some of the famous campsites of Kheerganga. All these camping sites have the basic facilities of a warm blanket, waterproof tent, shared toilets, drinking water, etc. They also serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the designated dining area. The tents are comfortable for a cold night but do not expect much cleanliness in the common toilet facilities as we have experienced.

What To Eat At Kheerganga?

Every food item is overpriced in Kheerganga. This is because the sellers have to carry them on the entire high-altitude trekking route. For the same reasons, you will not get rich food items like fried rice, biryani, or any non-veg food items. Every camp provides rice, roti/paratha, dal, mixed veg, rajma, and occasionally paneer.

You will also get namkeen, biscuits, Maggi noodles, tea, coffee, cold drinks, and juice from the stalls and campsites nearby. There are a few cafés around with limited facilities. So, it is wise to carry some food for Kheerganga.

Activities In Kheerganga

• Adventure Camping

Camping under the starry sky is an exciting activity for all trekkers. The camping site of Kheerganga is picturesque and worth visiting for a lifetime. If you are a trekker, camping at Kheerganga would definitely be an adventure. The glimpse of the snow-covered Himalayas from the tent under a full moon is a memorable experience.

• Bathing In The Hot Spring

The main activity in Kheerganga is bathing in the hot water spring. After completing the trekking journey, it is incredibly refreshing when you immerse yourself in the pool. The gents’ section is open, while the ladies’ section is covered all around. So, anyone can get fun and relaxation while bathing in the hot spring. There is a shaded cloth/luggage storing area where you can keep your bags and come down.

• Visit The Kartikswamy Temple

Just 60 meters away from the hot spring, visit the Kartikswamy temple. As per local mythology, the god Kartika meditated here. So, if your religious soul is calling, visit the temple in Kheerganga.

• Watching Sunset And Sunrise

The magical beauty of Kheerganga, surrounded by the sky-piercing Himalayas, is most enjoyable in the evening, especially before the sunset. During this time, nature paints itself with a mystic dance of colourful light and shadow. This is the most mesmerizing time of the whole trekking to Kheerganga from Kasol. The sunrise also looks beautiful from Kheerganga.

• Photography And Videography

Kheerganga is a very photogenic place. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains and dense forests, it is a perfect trekking destination for beginners. Located at an altitude of 2956 meters, Kheerganga is also free from air pollution and dust.

For this reason, the visibility of the night sky of Kheerganga is high. You can easily watch the stars, planets, and galaxies with your bare eyes. Using a good quality camera with suitable lenses would be very beneficial in capturing the starry night sky like it did to us during our trip.

Things To Carry In Kheerganga Trek

• Waterproof Trekking Shoe : A waterproof trekking shoe is an essential item for Kheerganga trekking. As there are many waterfalls, streams, and muddy trails, ordinary shoes will get wet and make your journey uncomfortable. Choose the best trekking shoe with high comfortability, breathability, and water resistance for a trouble-free trek.
• Umbrella/ Raincoat : Carrying an umbrella and/or raincoat is a must for Kheerganga trekking because rainfall is very uncertain throughout the year. If you get wet, you may catch a cold as the temperature is much lower at Kheerganga.
• Backpack With Rain Cover : For the same reason as abrupt rainfall, you must carry a trekking backpack with rain cover. You can use a small backpack (daypack) with minimum essential items or a rucksack with a higher capacity. But do not load the backpack heavily. Use the best quality rucksack with water-resistant materials and a rain cover for Kheerganga trekking.
• LED Torch With Extra Batteries: Carrying an LED torch or flashlight with additional batteries would be very beneficial for the Kheerganga trek. Electricity is available only at the starting points (Kasol/ Barshaini/ Kalga /Tosh) and endpoints (Kheerganga). So, an LED torch can be your saviour if it gets dark. You can use the torchlight from your mobile phone, but carrying a torch would be safer and more helpful.
• Toiletries: This is another essential item for trekking to Kheerganga. You should carry soap paper, toilet seat sanitiser, and wipes as the toilet facilities are not impressive.
• Warm Clothes: While you can comfortably trek wearing a simple T-shirt and trousers, you will need warm apparel like a trekking jacket and woollen shocks once reaching Kheerganga. The temperature is quite cold up there, so it is always better to carry warm clothes.
• Miscellaneous Items: Apart from the above items, you should also carry mosquito and insect repellants, binoculars, a walking stick/ trekking pole, a cap, sunglass, a towel, extra clothes for bathing, a first aid kit, medicines, photo ID proof, a water bottle and reusable plastic bag. Kheerganga Trek Cost

The cost of trekking to Kheerganga includes charges for accommodation, food, transport, and a guide. If you want to complete the trek within 2 days without staying at Kalga or Tosh, the expense would be lesser. It also depends on the number of trekkers.

If you are a solo trekker, you can accommodate in a single-occupancy tent. A 2-person tent would be ideal for a couple but will cost more. The cost of trekking is cheaper if you are travelling with a group and prefer a dormitory. Here is a typical package of trekking from Kasol to Kheerganga for 2 persons –

As you can see in the above table, the total cost mainly varies on transport and accommodations at Kalga and Tosh. You can hire a car from Kasol to Barshaini at the expense of ₹1200 to ₹1500, which becomes ₹2400 to ₹3000 for a return journey (Itinerary-1). On the other hand, you can also avail of the bus service at the cost of ₹40 per head.

The accommodation cost at Kheerganga greatly varies from ₹600 to ₹1500 in different seasons. For example, if you plan to trek in the month of May-June, the price will be the highest as it is peak season. Other times, you can book a tent at Kheerganga at a significantly lower cost.

Kalga and Tosh have different homestays with unique amenities and facilities. For this reason, the cost of stay and food at these two places vary a lot. However, the food quality is excellent as the vegetables are grown on local organic farms.

Tips For Kheerganga Trekking

• Always stay prepared for rainfall during Kheerganga trekking as the weather is often unpredictable. For this reason, carry an umbrella, raincoat, waterproof shoes, and a cover for your backpack.
• However, never overload your backpacks. Carry only the essential items and trek lightweight.
• Though you can get food and drinks on the way, it is wise to pack some dry fruits, chocolate, and enough water if you are uncomfortable with water from the streams.
• Start trekking as early as possible to enjoy the beauty of the Kheerganga trail to the fullest. Starting early in the morning, you will reach Kheerganga by noon and relax there.
• You should always follow the trail and stay safe from getting lost in the forest. Abide by the suggestions/commands of your guide/trek leader and avoid shortcuts.
• Mobile network and internet connectivity in Kheerganga are very poor. However, if you have a BSNL sim card, it can be a saviour.
• Pack enough toiletries and stay hygienic as we did not find the toilet facilities up to mark.
• As the nights are pretty cold at Kheerganga, carry a warm jacket in your rucksack. Besides blankets in the tent, it will help you warm up.

Frequently Asked Questions

While most parts of the Kheerganga trek are pretty easy for trekkers, some are difficult due to the narrow trail and risky landslide zone, especially if it rains. The last 3 kilometres of the journey involve a steep uphill trek which can be exhausting for beginners.

The Kheerganga trek is 10 to 14 Km long on different routes through apple orchards, pine forests, and meadows. You will cross several waterfalls, bridges, and stairs to reach there via Kasol, Barsheni, Kalga, and Tosh.

Presently, you do not need a permit to trek to Kheerganga. On 25th May 2018, commercial activities, including camping, were banned in Kheerganga following the mandate from the High Court. At that time, a permit from the forest department was mandatory. But, since many tourists and trekkers were visiting the place, the ban was lifted soon. Now, you do not need any permit to stay in a camp at Kheerganga.

If you are planning for a solo trek to Kheerganga, select a popular season like summer (April-May). At this time, lots of trekkers across India visit the place, and you will clearly see the trail and follow the crowd to reach Kheerganga. The route via Nakthan and Rudranag is preferable for solo travellers as it is easy to follow with no chance of getting lost in the forest. But if you plan to trek to Kheerganga from Kalga alone, it is recommended to hire a guide or join other groups of trekkers.

Yes, the Kheerganga trek is perfectly safe for the family, including women and kids. However, the age of the children should be at least 7. Also, the trek should be avoided if any of your family members have asthma or other breathing problems. But, in general, it is perfect for a family vacation.

To plan the Kheerganga trek, first, book your train/flight/bus tickets to Delhi or Chandigarh. Then, use any of the itineraries mentioned above and book your homestay/camp and bus to Kasol for at least 3 months before commencing the trek. Before leaving for Kheerganga, pack all your trekking essentials in the rucksack. When you reach Kasol, hire a cab and go to Barshaini, where you will start the Kheerganga trek.

Barsheni does not have a cloakroom to store the luggage before trekking to Kheerganga. However, if you plan your trekking via Kalga or Tosh and stay there according to the above itineraries 1 and 2, you can request the homestay owner to keep your luggage in the store room until you return from Kheerganga. When we trekked to Kheerganga, we kept our luggage in the homestay at Kalga and collected it after we returned.

The largest expenditure on the Kheerganga trek is the transport from and to Kasol and the guide charges. To trek to Kheerganga under ₹3500, avoid hiring a cab and avail of the bus service and travel with a group. In such a condition, you should also avoid staying at Kalga or Tosh, further reducing expenses. Follow the itinerary-1 mentioned above for trekking to Kheerganga with minimum outlay.

Best time to Visit Kasol – When to go to Kasol

When is the best time to visit Kasol? If you think about it, there can never really be a one-line answer to this question. Why? Because when to go to Kasol will always depend on what kind of a trip were you looking forward to. Kasol is beautiful always and presents a different color in each season. Which color do you want to see will decide when should you visit.

Located at an altitude of 1580 meters (5,180 ft), Kasol caters to a wide range of tourists. From a backpacker looking to get high to an adventure enthusiast to a family out on a vacation, you will find all kinds of travelers out there. Easy accessibility, stunning natural beauty, tons of activities, and being budget-friendly is what makes Kasol such a desired destination.

It is one of those places where tourism never really ends. On a general basis, April to June is considered to be the best time to visit Kasol. But will this suit you as well? Read on to find out.

About Kasol

Kasol is a small town located in Parvati Valley of Himachal Pradesh , on the banks of the River Parvati. It is located about 30 km from Bhuntar and 76 km from Manali. Kasol in recent times has come up as a hotspot for backpackers. It also acts as a base for nearby treks to Malana, Kheerganga, and Pin Parvati Pass .

Due to a large number of Israeli tourists in the region, the town is also nicknamed as ‘Mini Israel of India’. Every year, Kasol holds the annual Music Festival on every New Year’s Eve that attracts thousands of people wanting to celebrate their new year in the town.

Weather of Kasol

Owing to its high altitude, Kasol experiences a moderate climate for most of the year. Summers here are pleasant and short, lasting from April to June. Monsoon brings plenty of rains, covering the entire region under a carpet of green. It snows here in the winter months and the town turns into a white wonderland.

Below is a month by month breakdown of how the weather and tourism in Kasol trends in the year and when it would be a good time for you to go.

Kasol in January

January is the coldest month of the year in Kasol. This is also when the town receives the maximum amount of snow in the entire year. Kasol and the nearby places like Malana, Tosh, and Kheerganga continue getting frequent spells of snow throughout the month. If the weather turned extreme, the treks to Malana and Kheerganga may get closed for a few days or weeks.

The average temperature in January ranges between 5°C maximum and -2°C minimum. This is a good time to go if you want to see a white Parvati valley and hopefully also catch a live snowfall. You would however have to be prepared to handle the extreme cold and freezing temperatures.

Kasol in February

It continues to snow in Parvati Valley in February but as the month progresses, the intensity and frequency will go down. The snow on the ground around Kheerganga however will be more this month. If you want to see snowfall, you should plan in early February. The average temperature will range between 8°C maximum and 1°C minimum.

Kasol in March

This is a perfect month if you want to attempt a winter trek to Kheerganga or Malana . The route to both these places will definitely be open in March. It is still winter so even March will be terribly cold. The temperature will range between 10°C and 3°C. The chance of snow will remain in March as well but more towards the early part of the month.

If you went to Kasol in March and did not find any snow in the town, try trekking to Kheerganga and you will definitely find some there. Or you can try trekking other higher villages like Kalga, Pulga, or Tosh .

Kasol in April

The snow starts to melt in March and is mostly all gone by April. The only area where you may find some snow in April is probably around Kheerganga or other higher villages that can only be reached on foot. With that being said, the weather in April is very agreeable. It will neither be too cold nor too warm making it a great month for the trip. The temperature will remain around 15°C maximum and 7°C minimum.

April marks the beginning of the spring season. The water from the melting snow will feed the valley and help it turn green. This month also marks the beginning of the tourist season in Parvati Valley and the number of tourists slowly starts to increase.

• Clothes to Pack: Light woolens, Windproof jacket, caps, regular sports shoes

Kasol in May

The weather will continue to get warmer and the temperature will rise up to 20°C maximum and 7°C minimum. This is another great month to visit in terms of the weather as it will suit the majority of the tourists. With vacations on in the school, you will also find a lot of families in the valley in May and June.

If photography was on your mind, this month may disappoint you a little as the scenery in summer is a little dry. This is however the best time for trekking . Other than exploring Kheerganga and Malana , you will also be able to trek other areas and the village of Parvati Valley.

• Clothes to Pack: Regular cotton clothes, Light jacket, regular sports shoes

Kasol in June

June is pretty much the same as May with only one small change. The weather will get even warmer with the temperature rising up to 23°C maximum and 13°C minimum. This is the time when Kasol receives the maximum number of tourists and may even feel a little crowded.

This is a good time to go if you want to escape the heat of the plains for a few days. But it will be a bad time to go if you do not like the crowd and want to be away from people. In June, even Chalal can feel a bit crowded and you may have to move ahead towards other villages, rather than staying in Kasol.

Kasol in July

July is the warmest month of the year with the average temperature ranging between 25°C maximum and 17°C minimum. Kasol starts to get pre-monsoon showers by June end itself but it is July that marks the beginning of the monsoon season. It rains quite a lot here and you must remember that while visiting Kasol in July.

Monsoons in general are not considered to be a good time to be in the mountains. But if you must, you should plan towards the beginning of July. The frequency and intensity of the rain will continue to increase as the month progresses. Landslides and roadblocks become a common sight for a few weeks in the monsoon season.

If you are planning a trip in July, it would be wise to call ahead and inquire about the weather and the road conditions. You do not want to arrive in Kasol and then get stuck in Parvati valley because of the weather. Even if things did not go that extreme, it may continue to rain for days and shut you indoors at the hotel, ruining any sightseeing plans.

• Clothes to Pack: Regular cotton clothes (preferably the ones that can dry faster), Light jacket, regular sports shoes

Kasol in August

It will continue to rain in the month of August as well and in fact even more than July. This entire month is ruled by the rain gods. There will be no significant change in the temperature and it will average out at 23°C maximum and 16°C minimum.

With all that I said about monsoon being a bad time, there is also a positive side to it. This is probably the best time for a photography visit to Kasol. This is when the mountains and the valleys truly come to life. The vistas will turn heavenly and it would seem as if everything has been washed clean and covered with a carpet of green. The trek to Malana and Kheerganga will also remain open . In fact, it is actually the peak time for the Pin Parvati trek.

So yes, a trip to Kasol in August can easily be planned and will present you with an amazing landscape. Just keep the rain in mind and prepare accordingly.

Kasol in September

This by far is my most favorite time to visit Kasol. The monsoon will be long gone but would have left plenty of greenery behind. The weather will be very moderate and agreeable, perfect for visiting with family and friends. It will all still be very green and scenic, perfect for photography. The entire valley will remain open for tourism and you can participate in all outdoor activities.

The average temperature in September will range between 20°C maximum and 15°C maximum. There will be certain freshness in the air at this time and you will clearly feel it.

Kasol in October

October is the month of the autumn season. All that was green in September will now turn orange, giving a magical golden touch to the valley. This is another good month for photography, especially during the early part. For trekking, however, this is among the best times in the year. The weather will start to turn a little cold by end of the month and the average temperature will drop down to 16°C maximum and 9°C minimum.

There aren’t many tourists in the valley in October which makes it a good month for people looking to get away from the crowd. You may still find some tourists in Kasol but the number will be even lesser in places like Chalal and Tosh.

Kasol in November

November is an overall bad month to visit Kasol and Parvati Valley. This is the beginning of the winter season so the temperature will range between 12°C and 6°C. The scenery however will be very dull and dry. So what you get in November is just a featureless landscape. The weather will be terribly cold and there won’t even be any snow around.

With that being said, it makes it a perfect time for budget travelers. Since the number of tourists in the valley is very less, you will have a better chance of getting a good deal on accommodation in Kasol.

Kasol in December

The first half of December is much like November, dull and dry. But after the 15th of the month, it can snow anytime in Kasol and other nearby places. The upper reaches of Parvati Valley in fact start to receive snow in November itself but it snows in Kasol only by the end of December.

The average temperature in December will range between 7°C maximum and 1°C minimum. At nights, this will drop further down to a couple of degrees below zero. In places like Malana and Tosh , the average temperature will be even lower.

Best time to visit Kasol

Now based on the information above, I believe it is safe to say that the best time to visit Kasol is between April to June, September, and October. But it will also depend on what kind of trip did you want.

If you wanted to see snow, a trip from the end of December to early March will be the best. If you did not want to trek but wanted to get snowfall in Kasol itself, you will have to take your chances in January.

For a trip with the family, April to June is the best time. This is when the weather will suit the majority of travelers. For a budget trip, you should visit in July, August, or November. For photography, I will recommend July to September.

If you were thinking of a bike ride, you should avoid the months of July and August.

• Best Month to Visit Kasol – April are September can be termed as the best month to visit Kasol.
• Best season to Visit Kasol – Summer and post-monsoon can be considered as the best season to visit Kasol. If you want to see snow, it would have to be winter.
• Best time to visit Kasol for Party – The annual music festival at New Year’s Eve is really the best time to go to Kasol for Party. The end of December to early January, around Christmas and New Year, is really the party time here.
• Best time to visit Kasol for Hash – I really do not know anything about this because I have never tried it.
• Best time to visit Kasol for Snow – Late December to early March is a good time if you want to see snow. If you want to catch a live snowfall, January is the month to go.

Best time to go to Kasol – Conclusion

Kasol is a village in district Kullu, Himachal Pradesh situated in Parvati Valley, on the banks of the Parvati river on the way between Bhuntar to Manikaran . With tourists coming from every corner of the world, Kasol has been a personal favourite of hundreds of hipsters. If you are planning a trip to Kasol, you would surely want to know how to reach Kasol . Reaching Kasol is not a hassle as the stoner’s paradise enjoys excellent connectivity with neighbouring states through various means of transport.

While travelling via train, get off in Chandigarh and then take a cab or car from Chandigarh to Kasol . And for those coming from Delhi to Kasol by road, should get off in Bhuntar to board another bus from Bhuntar to Kasol . The following information will help you on how to go Kasol via modes of transport available:

Bangalore to Kasol

Mumbai to kasol, kolkata to kasol, pune to kasol, new delhi to kasol.

The nearest airport to Kasol is Kullu Manali Airport also known as Bhuntar Airport in Kullu district. Daily flights connect the airport to the country’s capital, Delhi. You can book a cab or a taxi to go to Kasol from the Bhuntar airport which is a mere 31 km and will take you about 1 hour to reach there. The nearest airport to Kasol is located in Bhunter, which is 31 kilometres away. Looking for a Delhi to Kasol flight? For tourists coming from other countries, you can take a flight to Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. From there, you can either opt for a bus, cab (540 km with an 11-12 hours journey) or take another flight from IGI Airport to Bhuntar and reach Kasol similarly as above.

Kasol does not have a railway station of its own. To reach Kasol by railways you have to get off at the nearest railway station to Kasol which is Joginder Nagar railway station, about 144 km from the village of Kasol . You can take a cab from the station to reach Kasol or a bus from the Joginder Nagar Bus Stand towards Manikaran which should take about 4.5 to 5 hours. Joginder Nagar is the nearest railway station to Kasol in Himachal Pradesh. Chandigarh Railway station is also very common among tourists coming via train. You can take a train to Chandigarh at a distance of 296 km from Kasol, which connects major Indian metro cities. You have to take a bus towards Manali or hire a cab to reach Kasol which should take about 8 to 9 hours.

Being one of the most visited places in India by foreign tourists, the village is accessible via excellent road facility. The NH-3 is the main road leading to this village towards Manali. A road journey should simply just be as enjoyable and pleasant as Kasol itself. You can opt for self-drive or hire a cab. Delhi sets the base for people coming from long distances. There are many agencies that provide vehicles for rent and cab services to Kasol you can get in Delhi. Also, buses ply daily to Kasol from Kashmiri Gate ISBT in Delhi mostly being semi-sleeper Volvos for about 1000 to 1500 INR per seat. This journey takes about 11 to 12 hours. You have to then get down at Bhuntar, and take another bus towards Manikaran.

It takes up to 7 hours from Chandigarh to Kasol via road. A bus from Kullu to Kasol via Bhuntar takes about 3 hours to cover the distance of 40 km. Private taxis are also available from Bhuntar to Kasol and beyond into Parvati Valley. It is best to take an overnight bus from New Delhi to make your Kasol trip memorable.

“The players are all available. They are all able to travel. And, well, then we will see the formation to face New England,” Inter Miami coach Tata Martino said Friday without revealing his lineup. 

“We have already played in Charlotte, which was artificial, last year," he continued, adding it wasn’t a problem then for the club and its players. 

At least 64,000 fans are expected in attendance Saturday , which will likely set a team record for the Revolution, and potentially be one of the top three most attended soccer matches in Gillette Stadium’s 23-year history.

More on New England’s playing surface before Inter Miami game 

The soccer playing surface at Gillette Stadium is the same field used by the New England Patriots for NFL games and similar to the turf Messi played on in Charlotte, a Revolution team spokesman told USA TODAY Sports earlier this week. 

"Same high-quality surface you’ll find at stadiums like Portland, Seattle, Charlotte – where Messi did play 90 minutes on the same type of surface," the spokesman said.

“All of my lower leagues, I’ve always played on turf,”  Messi said last August . “That was a long time ago, and it’s been a long time since I played on synthetic turf. But I have no problem adapting to turf again.”

Inter Miami is relatively healthy for New England match 

Messi’s Barcelona sidekick Jordi Alba will miss his second straight game due to a right hamstring injury. Midfielder Diego Gomez will miss the next six weeks with an ankle sprain. And midfielder Federico Redondo is still a month away from returning from a knee injury. Otherwise, Inter Miami is healthier than it’s been in a while. 

Messi will play in his fifth consecutive game since returning from a hamstring injury that kept him out March 13-April 6. Midfielder Benjamin Cremaschi also returned to the lineup to play sparingly in the last two games after sports hernia surgery. His presence, along with newly signed midfielder Matias Rojas, should help in Gomez’s absence. Strikers Leo Campana and Robert Taylor could return from hamstring injuries to play New England.

Asked how he feels about his team with some players returning from injury, Martino joked: "I’d like to start the 'ConcaChampions' tournament again."

Inter Miami was eliminated by Monterrey, which lost 2-1 to MLS Cup champions Columbus Crew earlier this week in the first of two matches in the Concacaf Champions Cup semifinal.
