Authorities say a tourist has died after a man attacked her and a companion near Neuschwanstein castle in southern Germany. The incident near the popular tourist attraction close to the Austrian border happened Wednesday afternoon.

BERLIN — Police in southern Germany are appealing for photos and videos taken by witnesses of an attack near Neuschwanstein castle in which an American man allegedly pushed two women down a steep slope, killing one of them. A suspect was arrested following the attack.

German news agency dpa quoted police as saying Friday that they have so far received about a dozen submissions on a specially created website , but assume many more images were taken by tourists present at the site.

"We are looking for photographs which, by chance, show two young women and a man (approx. 30 years old) who were staying east of the Marienbruecke," Kempten police said on their website. "These persons may have been walking together or separately."

In this image taken from video, a suspect is taken away by two police officers near Neuschwanstein castle in Schwangau, southern Germany on Thursday. An American man has been arrested after allegedly assaulting two U.S. tourists near the castle and then pushing them down a steep slope.

The Marienbruecke, or Mary's Bridge, is a popular vantage point for photos of Neuschwanstein, the most famous of the castles built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria in the 19th century.

According to the initial police investigation, the suspect met the two female tourists, Americans aged 21 and 22, on a hiking path and lured them onto a trail that leads to a viewpoint.

"The younger of the two women was attacked by the suspect," police spokesman Holger Stabik said. "The older one tried to rush to her aid, was then choked by the suspect and subsequently pushed down a slope."

The assailant then appears to have attempted to sexually assault the 21-year-old before pushing her down the slope as well, prosecutors said. She fell nearly 50 meters (165 feet), ending up close to her friend.

Both women were recovered by mountain rescuers. The 21-year-old was flown to a hospital with serious injuries and later died. The 22-year-old remains hospitalized, but is "responsive," police said.

Authorities haven't named either of the victims or given any further details.

The suspect, who likewise was not identified, remains in custody on suspicion of murder and attempted murder, prosecutors said, adding it wasn't clear how long he had been in the country.

The U.S. Embassy in Berlin said it was aware of the incident and the consulate in Munich was in contact with authorities.

"Due to privacy considerations, we are unable to comment further at this time," the embassy said in a statement.

American man pushed 2 U.S. tourists into ravine at German castle, killing one woman, police say

An American man has been arrested in the death of a U.S. tourist and an assault on another near Neuschwanstein castle in southern Germany after he allegedly pushed the two women down a steep slope, authorities said Thursday.

The incident near the popular tourist attraction happened on Wednesday afternoon near the Marienbruecke, a bridge over a gorge close to the castle that offers a famous view of Neuschwanstein.

The 30-year-old man met the two female tourists, ages 21 and 22, on a hiking path and lured them onto a trail that leads to a viewpoint, police said in a statement.

He then “physically attacked” the younger woman, police said. When her companion tried to intervene, he choked her and pushed her down a steep slope.

The assailant then appears to have attempted to sexually assault the 21-year-old before pushing her down the slope as well. She fell nearly 165 feet, ending up close to her friend.

A mountain rescue team reached both women. The 22-year-old was “responsive” and taken to a hospital, police said; a helicopter carried the 21-year-old to a different hospital with serious injuries, and she died there overnight.

The suspect left the scene but was arrested quickly nearby. Bystander video posted online showed police leading away a handcuffed man in a T-shirt, jeans and a baseball cap.

Witness Eric Abneri, a recent business graduate from the University of Pittsburgh who shot the video, said the man appeared to have scratches across his face.

“He did not say a single word. He didn’t open his mouth; he didn’t mumble,” Abneri told The Associated Press. “He just walked with the police and that was it.”

Abneri said he and friends arrived at the scenic overlook as a helicopter arrived and they saw rescuers lower themselves down to the victims.

“I’m honestly absolutely stunned someone is still alive from this. It is like falling from the top of an absolute cliff,” he said.

Abneri described it as “a very, very difficult rescue because of those cliffs and because the helicopter came mere feet above the tree line at the top of the hill.”

“They did an unbelievable job,” he said.

Police said the man they arrested was American and described him as also a tourist; prosecutors said the women were fellow U.S. citizens. The 22-year-old remained hospitalized Thursday, according to prosecutors.

Authorities didn’t identify either the suspect or the victims or give any further details.

Police said a judge in nearby Kempten on Thursday ordered the suspect held pending a potential indictment — a process that can take months — and he was taken to jail. He is under investigation on suspicion of murder, attempted murder and a sexual offense.

Police said they and prosecutors were focusing on trying to reconstruct exactly what happened and called for any witnesses to come forward.

Crime and public safety | california man convicted of execution-style slaying of german tourist in 1996 to be released from prison, daughter of victim, a rancho palos verdes resident, says thongxay nilakout could soon be free.

german tourist killed

The California Board of Parole Hearings on Tuesday, June 20, reaffirmed a two-member panel’s December recommendation to parole Thongxay Nilakout, who in 1994 fatally shot and robbed 64-year-old Gisela Pfleger and wounded her husband, Klaus Pfleger, who was 62 at the time.

In May, Gov. Gavin Newsom ordered the full parole board to review the panel’s recommendation to ensure Nilakout’s release doesn’t pose a public safety danger.

Newsom cited Nilakout’s prison psychological evaluation as the reason for the review.

“The psychologist found that Mr. Nilakout’s deficits in awareness and understanding related to the … crime and other more recent negative behavior remain present, but seem to be decreasing,” Newsom said in ordering the full board review. “While this is an encouraging sign that Mr. Nilakout has made progress in rehabilitation, I ask the full board to assess whether Mr. Nilakout has sufficiently mitigated his risk factors and whether his release on parole is consistent with public safety.”

When the Board of Parole Hearings affirms a panel’s recommendation for parole, an inmate automatically begins the process for release.

The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, citing security and safety protocols, declined Wednesday to disclose when Nilakout might be freed.

However, Birte Pfleger of Rancho Palos Verdes, who is Gisela Pfleger’s daughter, believes that Nilakout’s release may be imminent, adding that he intends to live in Banning.

“He has said that he will go back to where he grew up,” she said in a phone interview Wednesday. “It’s devastating to the community of Banning, which will have a murderer” living among residents.

Birte Pfleger told the Board of Parole Hearings on Tuesday that Nilakout’s only jobs in prison have been as a gardener, barber and porter, adding he is ill-equipped to function in society.

“He has not furthered his education, although Solano State Prison offers over 300 college courses,” she said in a statement to the board. “Student success and retention rates at Solano are higher for incarcerated people than for students enrolled in on-campus courses. Mr. Nilakout must demonstrate his ability to pursue his goals, which will also address the danger of anti-social behavior.”

Nilakout, 17 years old at the time of the crime, was originally sentenced in 1996 to life in prison without the possibility of parole.

However, in 2012, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that mandatory life-without-parole sentences are unconstitutional for juvenile offenders. Justices ruled children are constitutionally different from adults for sentencing purposes, noting that their lack of maturity and an underdeveloped sense of responsibility can lead to recklessness, impulsiveness and risk-taking.

About 2,000 juvenile inmates nationwide serving mandatory life-without-parole sentences, including Nilakout, were affected by the decision. Nilakout was denied parole in 2019.

Nilakout’s accomplice, Khamchan Bret Ketsouvannasane, who was 19 at the time of the murder, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole and remains incarcerated. A third defendant, getaway driver Xou Yang — also then 19 and described by authorities as the “mastermind” of the robbery — pleaded guilty to first-degree murder and received 25 years to life in prison. He has since been paroled.

All three men had immigrated from Laos and were living in Banning when they hatched the robbery plot.

Birte Pfleger has said she was studying for her master’s degree in history at Cal State Long Beach when her parents came from Germany to visit her on Friday, May 13, 1994. Over the weekend, she took them to the J. Paul Getty Museum and Universal CityWalk.

However, on Monday, May 16, the Los Angeles area was enshrouded in “June gloom,” a weather pattern that causes cloudy, overcast skies and cool temperatures. Birte Pfleger suggested that her parents drive to Idyllwild, where the skies would be clearer and the scenery picturesque.

The Pflegers were robbed and attacked while photographing flowers at a scenic overlook on Highway 243, about a half-mile from Lake Fulmor. A photograph taken by Klaus Pfleger just moments before the shooting shows his wife carrying a pair of binoculars.

Miraculously, he was able to drive to Lake Fulmor and, although unable to talk, managed to scribble a note stating that he was German and was able to direct authorities to the location of his dead wife, Birte Pfleger said. After undergoing surgery at Desert Regional Medical Center, he also provided a precise description of the attackers and their vehicle, she added.

Police received tips from Banning’s Hmong community that led them to the attackers several days after the shooting.

Birte Pfleger, a history professor at Cal State Los Angeles, has purposely avoided telling her now 91-year-old father, whom she will visit in Germany this weekend, about Nilakout’s parole.

“There is no benefit to him knowing that the man who killed his wife and almost killed him will be released,” she said.

French prosecutors open probe into ‘terrorist plot’ after deadly Paris knife attack

A man known to French authorities for radical Islamism and mental health troubles stabbed a tourist to death and wounded two other people in central Paris late Saturday night before being arrested, with prosecutors opening an investigation into a "terrorist plot".

Issued on: 03/12/2023 - 01:49 Modified: 03/12/2023 - 22:17

The attack close to the Eiffel Tower around 9:00pm (2000 GMT) during a busy weekend came with the country on its highest alert, as tensions rise against the background of the war between Israel and Hamas .

Prosecutors specialising in terrorist incidents told AFP they had opened a probe into the attacker, who was identified as a French national born in 1997 to Iranian parents. The man was arrested soon after the attack .

Prosecutors suspect him of murdering a 23-year-old man, identified as a German-Filipino citizen by a judicial source.

He will further be probed for attempted murder against the two wounded people, a 66-year-old British citizen and a 60-year-old French national, "in connection with a terrorist plot".

The attacker, known to authorities and in treatment for mental illness, shouted "Allahu Akbar" – Arabic for "God is greatest" – at the moment of the attack, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said at the scene by Bir Hakeim bridge over the River Seine.

The man, who lived with his parents in the Essonne region south of Paris , told police he could not stand Muslims being killed in " Afghanistan and Palestine" and accused France of being "an accomplice to what Israel is doing" in the Gaza Strip , Darmanin added.

Three people "close to" the suspect were being held in custody on Sunday afternoon, prosecutors said.

Saturday's attack drew responses from the highest level of the French state.

Jamais. — Élisabeth BORNE (@Elisabeth_Borne) December 2, 2023

"We will not give in to terrorism ," Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne wrote on X, formerly Twitter, after the attack.

President Emmanuel Macron said he was sending his condolences to the family of the man killed in the "terrorist attack".

Germany on Sunday condemned the stabbing that killed the 23-year-old tourist. "The Islamist knife attack on a young man near the Eiffel Tower in Paris is an abominable crime. Our thoughts go to the family and friends of the victim, and to the others wounded in this terrible act," Interior Minister Nancy Faeser told the Funke media group in an interview.

'Unstable and easily influenced'

Police and security sources confirmed that the attacker had posted a video claiming responsibility to social media at the moment of the attack, speaking about "current events, the government, the murder of innocent Muslims".

In the nearly two-minute video, the attacker declared his support for the Islamic State (IS) group and pledged allegiance to its current leader Abu Hafs, reports FRANCE 24's terrorism expert Wassim Nasr. The attacker claimed he acted “to avenge Muslims” and hailed the accomplishments of IS members. He made no mention of Palestine or Gaza.

Investigators will look closely at the attacker's medical history, a security source told AFP, calling him "very unstable and easily influenced".

The attacker was "being monitored in way that did not mean he was being hospitalised, he was supposed to follow a course of treatment" for his mental health issues, Health Minister Aurélien Rousseau told broadcaster France 3.

"As often in these cases, there's a mixture of an ideology, an easily influenced person and, unfortunately, psychiatry," Rousseau added.

Darmanin said the man had already been sentenced in 2016 to four years in prison for planning another attack in Paris business district La Défense, which he failed to carry out.

A taxi driver who witnessed the scene intervened, Darmanin added, saving the wife of the slain tourist. The attacker then crossed the bridge, lashing out at others and injuring one with a hammer.

Pursuing police used a taser to neutralise the man, who was then arrested.

Rousseau told France 3 on Sunday that the wounded victims were "in good health", suffering only "superficial traumas, but of course psychological traumas that will be enormous".

— Emmanuel Macron (@EmmanuelMacron) December 3, 2023

Macron, writing on X, thanked security forces for their quick arrest of the suspected attacker and said justice should be served "in the name of the French people".

'Help, help'

Joseph S., a 37-year-old supermarket manager who asked not to give his last name, witnessed the scene as he sat in a bar.

He heard screams and people shouting "help, help" as they ran. A man wielding a hammer attacked a man who had fallen down, and within five to 10 minutes the police arrived, he told AFP.

France has suffered several attacks by Islamist extremists, including the November 2015 attacks in Paris claimed by the IS group in which 130 people were killed.

There had been a relative lull in recent years, even as officials have warned that the threat remains.

But tensions have risen in France, home to large Jewish and Muslim populations, following Hamas's attack on Israel on October 7 and Israel's ensuing bombardment of the Gaza Strip.

Security in Paris is also under particular scrutiny as the city gears up to host the 2024 Summer Olympic Games.

In October, teacher Dominique Bernard was killed in the northern French town of Arras by a young radicalised Islamist from Russia 's Caucasus region.

German tourist shot dead during dream holiday in South Africa when car ambushed

german tourist killed

A German tourist was shot dead in cold blood when his car was ambushed by an armed gang on the first day of a dream holiday with friends in South Africa .

The victim was in the people carrier with a woman believed to be his wife and another German couple and were just 25 miles from the Kruger National Park .

As they drove through a township area of a farming village at White River in Mpumalanga Province a VW Caddy pulled in front of their Hyundai Staria.

Three men believed to be in camouflage gear jumped out with guns having forced the German tourists to a halt and screamed:”Open the doors!”.

When the driver hit a button centrally locking all four doors it is believed the ringleader fired at least one shot through the window into the driver.

He had already put the car into reverse and then sped backwards 100 yards crashing into a school wall as the panicking gunmen made their getaway.

Tragically the driver had been so badly shot in the upper body his partner and friends could do nothing for him and he died almost instantly at the scene.

Police and emergency services rushed to the scene but could do nothing to help him and launched a huge manhunt for the gang who shot him dead.

The brutal murder of the German and the terror inflicted on those in the car with him will horrify South African tourist chiefs who are just rebuilding their market after Covid.

One of the first responders said:”It was a really bad gunshot wound and due to the blood we could not tell initially whether it was just one shot or more.

“His wife or partner was incredibly distressed and I have never seen in all my years anybody so distressed and it was an incredibly upsetting situation.

“There was a lot of blood and screaming and as you can imagine the tourists were hysterical but nothing that could be done to save his life” he said.

It is thought the group had just flown in from Germany to Johannesburg and were making the 250-mile drive to the Mdluli Lodge for a safari holiday.

The Mdluli Lodge is just inside the Kruger National Park’s Numbi Gate and they were just 25 miles away from its safety when they were ambushed at 4.30pm.

Just inside the gate 5 miles along a dirt track is the Mdluli Lodge which has 50 luxury tents at £289 each per night overlooking a river with game viewing.

Guests go out twice daily on 4 x 4 safari jeeps to view the Big 5 of elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard with gourmet dining at lunch and dinner.

Tragically the German tourists were just 45 minutes from their destination.

Police spokesman Brigadier Selvy Mohala said:”Four German tourists were stopped by three armed suspects who ordered them to open the doors.

“The driver reportedly locked all the doors and one of the suspects shot him in the upper body through the window as the driver went into reverse.

“He reversed the vehicle about 100 metres and crashed into a school wall but it would seem he by then had died on the spot as a result of the shooting.

“The suspects sped off in their car without taking anything with them” he said.

Mpumalanga Police Provincial Commander Lieutenant General Semakeleng Manamela condemned the cowardly attack and promised to give justice.

She said:”This attack on a group of tourists was really cruel and uncalled for especially given the economic challenges which our country is facing now.

“When one has tourists then it is the tourist sector that is benefitting in a way which gives a boost to our struggling economy which it needs.

“We call on our citizens who might have seen or heard or have any information about these criminals to come forward so we can bring swift justice”.

In 2020 German restauranteur Eduard Neumeister, 67, was hacked to death as he opened up his eatery in South Africa for breakfast to his customers.

He died in a hail of blows at the Bratwurst Sausage Restaurant in Balgowan, 70 miles north of Durban which he ran with his partner Margit Riebler, 62.

South Africa is said to be one of the most dangerous places in the world with 67 murders a day and 115 reported rapes but tourist murders are rare.

Police appeal for photos and video after American arrested in fatal attack near German castle

By Haley Ott

Updated on: June 16, 2023 / 9:22 AM EDT / CBS News

German police were appealing Friday for photos and video in relation to an attack near a castle in Germany that left a 21-year-old American dead and her 22-year-old friend injured when they were allegedly assaulted by another American tourist. Police in the southeast German state of Bavaria confirmed to CBS News that a U.S. national was arrested in connection with the incident, and Stefan Rinke, the Mayor of Schwangau, in Bavaria, told local media that all three people involved were American.

The women were hiking near Neuschwanstein Castle, which served as the inspiration for the castle in Disney's movie "Cinderella," when they met a 30-year-old man who told them to follow him down a trail leading to a secret viewpoint.

Tourist dies after attack at Neuschwanstein Castle

When the two women followed him, the suspect attacked the 21-year-old victim, police spokesperson Holger Stabik said. Her friend tried to intervene and the man choked her and pushed her down a steep slope. He then attempted to sexually assault the 21-year-old, Stabik said, before pushing her down the slope as well.

Both women fell approximately 165 feet.

Rescue workers found the two women and the 21-year-old was flown by helicopter to a hospital, where she died of her injuries. Stabik told CBS News on Friday that the 22-year-old woman suffered minor injuries and was expected to be released from the hospital later in the day.

"The perpetrator at first moved away from the scene of the crime after the assault," Stabik told journalists on Thursday. "Whether this was a classic escape or not is not entirely known. In any case, he was then arrested a short time later by police officers on the basis of a witness tip in the immediate vicinity of the crime."

Eric Abneri was visiting Neuschwanstein Castle from New York and captured video of the suspect being led away by police on his phone.

"His face was covered in deep red scratch marks and his neck as well," Abneri told CBS News on Thursday. "There was clearly a struggle there, and he just had a frown on his face. He didn't say anything. He had a sort of disturbed look."

A spokesperson for the U.S. Embassy in Berlin told CBS News on Thursday that it was "aware of an incident involving multiple individuals" but declined to provide further information citing "privacy considerations."

The official said the embassy was communicating with German authorities on the matter.

CBS News' Anna Noryskiewicz in Berlin and Emmet Lyons in London contributed to this report.

A German tourist died and two other people, including a British citizen, were hurt after an attack by a man armed with a knife and hammer near the Eiffel Tower in Paris on Saturday, in what President Emmanuel Macron described as "a terrorist attack."

Police quickly arrested a 26-year-old man, a French national, after subduing him with a Taser stun gun, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin told reporters on Saturday.

The suspect had been sentenced in 2016 to four years in prison for planning another attack, and had been on the French security services' watch list, the minister said, adding that he was also known for having psychiatric disorders.

The man attacked a tourist couple on Saturday evening with a knife on the Quai de Grenelle, not far from the Eiffel Tower, mortally wounding the German national.

He was then chased by police and attacked two other people with a hammer, including the Briton, before being arrested.

2 injured include British man

"We are supporting a British man who was injured in Paris and are in contact with the local authorities," said a spokesperson for the British Foreign Ministry.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on the social network platform X, formerly known as Twitter, that he was "shocked" by the attack.

The suspect had shouted out "Allahu akbar" (God is greatest) and told police he was upset because "so many Muslims are dying in Afghanistan and in Palestine" and was also upset about the Gaza situation, Darmanin said.

Threat of 'lone wolf' assailants

French anti-terrorism prosecutors are leading an investigation into the incident and were to hold a news conference later on Sunday.

European security officials have warned of a growing risk of attacks by radical Islamists amid the Israel-Hamas war, with the biggest threat likely from "lone wolf" assailants who are hard to track.

French gendarmes patrol the plaza near the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

"I send all my condolences to the family and loved ones of the German national who died this evening during the terrorist attack in Paris and think with emotion of the people currently injured and in care," Macron said on X.

Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne expressed defiance in the face of such attacks, saying on X: "We will not give in to terrorism."

France has been on high alert since raising its security threshold in October, when a man of Chechen origin fatally stabbed a teacher in a school in northern France.

The attack in central Paris comes less than eight months before the French capital is due to host the Olympic Games and could raise questions about security at the global sporting event.

The city was planning an opening ceremony on the Seine river with the potential to attract as many as 600,000 spectators.

Opponents to Macron were quick to react.

Jordan Bardella, president of Marine Le Pen's far-right National Rally party, the largest single opposition party in parliament, said on X: "The French will wonder how a man on a watch list already convicted of having planned an attack, who was a notorious psychiatric case, in the current context, was able to walk freely and armed on a Saturday evening through the streets of Paris."

Didier Fleury, a 63-year old entrepreneur who lives near the site of the attack, told Reuters: "If we look at the news at the moment, you can't be completely surprised by that. Since those are random attacks, it's very complicated to prevent. We'll probably have more. The holiday season is approaching and, unfortunately, I'm afraid it won't be the last."

Man who shot and killed German tourist near Idyllwild in 1994 to be released from prison

Leticia Juarez Image

RIVERSIDE COUNTY, Calif. (KABC) -- A convicted murderer who has spent nearly 28 years in prison for killing a German tourist in Southern California could soon be released, reigniting calls for justice by the victim's family.

In May of 1994, Thongxay Nilakout shot and killed Gisela Pfleger and wounded her husband, Klaus, during a robbery in the mountains near Idyllwild. He was with two accomplices.

Though Klaus was shot in the face, he managed to drive to get help and ultimately survived.

"In April of 1996, I thought we were done with it," said the couple's daughter Birte Pfleger. "I never stopped grieving my mom, of course, but I thought these guys would never get out."

That changed in 2012 when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled mandatory life sentences for minors as unconstitutional.

Nilakout was 17 at the time of the crime.

On Tuesday, the California Board of Parole Hearings reaffirmed its earlier decision to release Nilakout, despite Birte's opposition and her petition to Gov. Gavin Newsom to overturn the decision.

Birte said Nilakout received help during his parole hearing by the USC Post-Conviction Justice Project.

"This is not about finding factually innocent people and getting them out of prison, this is the Post-Conviction Project ... to train, rehearse with inmates what to say at their parole hearing," said Birte.

In a statement sent to Eyewitness News, the USC Gould School of Law said, "the project works with clients who were convicted of crimes as youths, including those with sentences that are outdated."

Birte was attending Cal State Long Beach when the murder occurred. Her parents were in town visiting from Germany.

"The actual crime no longer matters, and I think that the parole board has marching orders to empty California prisons," said Birte.

Nilakout is now 46. Birte said he will be returning to his home in Banning. She told ABC7 she is traveling to visit her ailing father in Germany, but said she won't be telling him about Nilakout's release.

"My dad is now 91," she said. "He is a broken man. He never recovered. He has social anxiety. What's the benefit of him knowing?"

Birte said the getaway driver in her mother's murder was also placed on parole and the other accomplice will likely also seek parole.

German tourist killed in stabbing near Eiffel Tower in Paris

A 26-year-old French citizen arrested in connection with the stabbing that killed one person and wounded two others.

Eiffel Tower police

A German tourist has been killed and two other people wounded in a knife attack close to the iconic Eiffel Tower in central Paris, according to the French interior minister.

“A man attacked a couple who were foreign tourists. A German tourist who was born in the Philippines died from the stabbing,” Gerald Darmanin said on Sunday, adding that “he will now have to answer for his actions before justice” for the attack that took place at about 19:00 GMT on Saturday.

The attacker was known to authorities and was being treated for mental illness, Darmanin said.

The Paris prosecutor’s office said the attacker, a 26-year-old French citizen, has been arrested and an investigation has been launched.

The “anti-terrorism” prosecutor’s office said it had not yet been put in charge of an investigation.

Darmanin said the man had already been sentenced in 2016 to four years in prison for planning another attack which he failed to carry out.

‘Never’ give in to ‘terrorism’

“I send all my condolences to the family and loved ones of the German national who died this evening during the terrorist attack,” President Emmanuel Macron posted on social media.

Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said on X that her country “will cede nothing in the face of terrorism … never”.

The incident comes less than eight months before the Olympic Games in Paris, prompting concerns about the security measures for the upcoming global sporting event.

The city is gearing up for the opening ceremony on the Seine River, which is expected to attract up to 600,000 spectators.

France has been under a heightened alert for possible attacks since October, when a teacher was fatally stabbed in the northern city of Arras by a former student originally from the Ingushetia region in Russia’s Caucasus Mountains.

That fatal attack came three years after another teacher was killed outside Paris, beheaded by a Chechen, and who was later killed by police.

A California Instagram influencer was among two killed Wednesday when they were caught in the crossfire of a gang shootout in Tulum.

One of the women killed was Anjali Ryot — a 25-year-old travel blogger who had more than 42,000 Instagram followers — according to authorities in Quintana Roo, the state where Tulum is located. German Jennifer Henzold, 35 was also killed by the gunfire, which came about 10 p.m. local time, according to News.com.au .

Medics declared Ryot dead at the scene, while Henzold was rushed to a hospital, where she died, according to the outlet. Ryot is from Himachal, India, and lived in San Jose, California, according to her social media profiles.

Three other tourists were hurt in the shooting at a bar near Tulum’s main strip, including a pair of German men and a Dutch woman.

Anjali Ryot, who had more than 42,000 Instagram followers, was declared dead at the scene.

In response, the German Foreign Office issued a travel advisory, telling Germans visiting the resort destinations in Mexico, “if you are currently in the Tulum or Playa del Carmen area, do not leave your secured hotel facilities.”

The gunfight broke out between two drug-dealing groups that operate in the heavily visited area, according to prosecutors.

Anjali Ryot was a 25-year-old travel blogger who was tragically killed while dining in Tulum, Mexico.

Investigations revealed that there was “an armed clash between criminal groups dedicated to the sale of drugs,” the local district attorney said.

“I strongly condemn the tragic events that occurred last night in Tulum in which two people lost their lives and three others were injured,” Tulum Mayor Marciano Dzul Caaman tweeted on Thursday.

The travelers were dining at a bar named La Malquerida in the tourist hub and were likely caught in the crossfire.

After the shooting, American tourist James Graham said he had come to Tulum with thoughts of potentially purchasing a property there to rent out on AirBnB, but the “surprising shooting gave him second thoughts.

“Right now, we are not so sure we’re going to buy anything here,” he said.

“I think that what was surprising, is we figured that this type of crime wouldn’t necessarily be where the main tourist areas are, just because it’s such a big part of the economy,” Graham explained. “You would think that you would be very careful to make sure that you know the tourists feel very safe coming here.”

Meanwhile, the Provincial Commissioner of the SAPS in Mpumalanga, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, has vehemently condemned the suspects’ terrible atrocity.

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) — A German court on Saturday ordered a 25-year-old man born in Afghanistan held on suspicion of attempted murder in connection with a knife attack at an event organized by a group opposing “political Islam” that left six people injured.

The victims included a police officer who remained hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after he was stabbed while trying to intervene, police and prosecutors said in a joint statement.

Officials offered no information regarding the motive for the attack on Friday on the central square in Mannheim.

A statement from police and prosecutors said that the suspect had lived in Germany since 2014, was married and has two children. His apartment in the town of Heppenheim was searched Friday night and police recovered digital devices whose contents were being evaluated.

Officials said that the suspect, who was shot and wounded by police, was hospitalized and not in a condition to be questioned. They said he had no prior police record.

They haven’t disclosed the suspect’s citizenship or immigration status or how he came to Germany.

The group, Pax Europa, describes itself as an organization that informs the public about the dangers posed by the “increasing spread and influence of political Islam.” Michael Stürzenberger, an anti-Islamist activist who is one of the group’s leading figures and has spoken at its events, was among those wounded.

Stürzenberger, 59, posted a picture of himself on his Telegram channel from his hospital bed, showing a long, bandaged cut on his upper lip and cheek. He said he had suffered “significant blood loss” from a stab wound in his thigh as well as a cut on his jaw that had been stapled shut.

The other victims were five men ages 25, 36, 42, and 54. The 25-year-old man has been released from the hospital, while the others were still be treated. The 54-year-old man suffered injuries that were initially life-threatening, but he was now out of danger.

Remembering D-Day: Key facts and figures about the invasion that changed the course of World War II

FILE - American soldiers and supplies arrive on the shore of the French coast of German-occupied Normandy during the Allied D-Day invasion on June 6, 1944 in World War II. Nearly 160,000 Allied troops landed in Normandy on June 6, 1944. Of those, 73,000 were from the United States, 83,000 from Britain and Canada. Forces from several other countries were also involved, including French troops fighting with Gen. Charles de Gaulle. The Allies faced around 50,000 German forces. (AP Photo, File)

The June 6, 1944, D-Day invasion of Nazi-occupied France was unprecedented in scale and audacity, using the largest-ever armada of ships, troops, planes and vehicles to punch a hole in Adolf Hitler’s defenses in western Europe and change the course of World War II.

With veterans and world dignitaries gathering in Normandy to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the landings, here’s a look at some details about how the operation unfolded.

WHO TOOK PART Nearly 160,000 Allied troops landed in Normandy on June 6, 1944. Of those, 73,000 were from the United States and 83,000 from Britain and Canada. Forces from several other countries were also involved, including French troops fighting with Gen. Charles de Gaulle.

The Allies faced around 50,000 German forces.

More than 2 million Allied soldiers, sailors, pilots, medics and other people from a dozen countries were involved in the overall Operation Overlord, the battle to wrest western France from Nazi control that started on D-Day.

WHERE AND WHEN The sea landings started at 6:30 a.m., just after dawn, targeting five code-named beaches: Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno, Sword. The operation also included actions inland, including overnight parachute landings on strategic German sites and U.S. Army Rangers scaling cliffs to take out German gun positions.

Around 11,000 Allied aircraft, 7,000 ships and boats, and thousands of other vehicles were involved.

VICTIMS ON ALL SIDES A total of 4,414 Allied troops were killed on D-Day itself, including 2,501 Americans. More than 5,000 were wounded.

In the ensuing Battle of Normandy, 73,000 Allied forces were killed and 153,000 wounded. The battle — and especially Allied bombings of French villages and cities — killed around 20,000 French civilians.

The exact German casualties aren’t known, but historians estimate between 4,000 and 9,000 men were killed, wounded or missing during the D-Day invasion alone. About 22,000 German soldiers are among the many buried around Normandy.

SURVIVORS Inevitably, the number of survivors present at major anniversary commemorations in France continues to dwindle. The youngest survivors are now in their late 90s. It’s unclear how many D-Day veterans are still alive. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs says it doesn’t track their numbers.

German police officer dies of wounds suffered in knife attack

A 29-year-old German police officer has died of injuries suffered during a knife attack that left five other people injured on the central square of Mannheim

FRANKFURT, Germany — A 29-year-old German police officer has died of injuries suffered during a knife attack that left five other people injured on the central square of Mannheim, officials said Sunday.

The officer was stabbed several times in the head and neck by a 25-year-old immigrant from Afghanistan and underwent emergency surgery after the attack Friday, officials said. The officer was placed in an artificial coma but succumbed to his injuries on Sunday.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz posted on X, formerly Twitter, that he was “deeply grieved” and that the officer’s “commitment to the safety of us all deserves the highest recognition.”

Two dozen of the officer’s colleagues paid tribute to their fallen comrade, removing their hats during a gathering Sunday at the site of the attack

The suspect was shot and wounded by another officer; he remained hospitalized and a judge has ordered him held on suspicion of attempted murder. Police and prosecutors have not provided a motive for the attack, saying the suspect was not in a condition to be questioned.

The attack took place during an event held by Pax Europa, which describes itself as an organization that informs the public about the dangers posed by the “increasing spread and influence of political Islam.” Michael Stürzenberger, a 59-year-old anti-Islamist activist who is one of the group’s leading figures and has spoken at its events, was among those wounded.
