An unbelievable experience!

Gamewatchers is an outstanding company! Julie did a wonderful job of helping us schedule the trip while providing great communication. The accommodations on the trip exceeded our expectations. We stayed in a bed & breakfast the first two nights, two different camps, and Waterlover's beach resort. The staff and food at each place were wonderful. On safari, we saw many more animals than expected and many were very up close. Our guides were very helpful and knew their stuff. I would recommend ending the vacation at the beach. It was extremely relaxing.

We have been to 3 of their camps, The Nairobi Tented Camp, The Porini Amboselli and the Porini Lion Camp and all places have provided us with excellent service. The staff were all very attentive. Excellent meals daily. All our guide were very knowledgeable of all the animals and plants we saw and they were able to show us the importance of conservancy to preserve our animals and plants. Plus some of the profits go to improving the lives f the villages around the camp such as wells and schools as well as parl conservancy. They have made our vacation truly memorable. Highly recommend their company to any who wants to experience a safari.

We had been thinking of a safari for sometime and came across Gamewatchers and Porini Camps. Gamewatchers organises the trips/transfers etc. The Porini camps are a separate organisation based in Conservancy areas. The 2 work closely together but are separate for Vat purposes. Their websites are very thorough and really have all the information you want. We sent an enquiry via the website. Had a quick response from Wayne Hammond. Over the course of 2 emails and then a phone call we were able to decide on the trip we wanted to do. He was quick on subsequent enquires and patient with our many questions. We chose Gamewatchers and Porini as we loved the fact that the camps were open and based in the bush- not in lodges as we really wanted to experience nature and the animals close at hand.(we had been on safari before and stayed in lodges). We had to book our international flights and Gamewatchers booked transfers, hotels, internal flights and the camps. We were greeted on arrival, the pickup vehicle had a bottle of water each for us- a nice thought. We were taken to Eka hotel and picked up the next morning. Everything worked smoothly. Other transfers & internal flights all went equally well. Follow up after care has been good. The Conservancy idea is fantastic for the Masai and also meant great viewing. We can honestly say that the experience with them and the wildlife we viewed beat previous Safaris by a mile. Do note though that if you want Lodge luxury this is not for you- if you really want to experience true wild life and be serenaded by animal noises during the night this is for you.

We just came back from traveling around Porini camps. I am so pleased with Gamewatcher services; stress free African Vacation. We were treated like royalties from the time, we stepped in to the airport to the time we departed from the airport. Nairobi Tented Camp was the most fancy one. The manager of this tent was the best. Amboseli Tent Camp was excellent for taking pictures especially during sundowning. We were so lucky to have Geoffrey as our gamedriver in Porini Masai Mara Camp. Geoffrey tried his best for the guests to see how the cheetah or the Lions were closing in to hunt for their preys. The Lions camp had lots of big cats. Rhino Camp is the weakest among the camps; not too many wildlife. Be prepare to give big tips because the staff members work very hard for the guests. Our Gamewatcher agent, Rick McIntyre was very helpful and prompted.

First let me say our experience all the way around with Gamewatchers was phenomenal. We had a bit of a different experience with Gamewatchers that I wanted to share. One of the things we often don't think about when preparing to travel is what happens if I get sick in the middle of my vacation? Well, that is what happened to me. Not only did I get sick but I got violently ill due to Labyrinthitis. I was at the Peroni Rhino Camp and they immediately called in a doctor to come to the camp to attend to me. He was great. He tried to get my condition under control but was not able to do so. As a result, the flying doctors were called in and I was airlifted to the Nairobi hospital. Gamewatchers was there every step of the way. Literally. They called the hospital to ensure a good doctor was there waiting for me upon arrival. There was a Gamewatchers representative at the hospital waiting for us (husband was with me) when we arrived and he stayed with us the entire time I was there. (2 days). Meanwhile back at the Peroni Rhino camp, Gamewatchers was taking care of my 77 year old father who was traveling with us. My dad didn't have any of the itinerary and didn't know anything about what transfers he was supposed to be making. We were planning on flying into Peroni Mara the day after I got ill. Gamewatchers had his whole itinerary and made sure he was well taken care of the whole time he was separated from us. When he flew into Peroni Mara there were guys there waiting for him to take him to camp. In addition, "Jimmy" from that camp went and found my dad every time we called so dad could talk to us. They made sure he got on the plane to get back to Nairobi safe and sound to meet back up with us at the hotel. Again, while at the hotel, Gamewatchers was there with us and escorted us to the attractions we had scheduled around Nairobi over the next couple of days. (They even pushed me in my wheelchair) While my safari was cut short due to my sudden illness, the time we were at Peroni Rhino camp was incredible. We had Buffalo in our "front yard" waiting for us one morning and Lions roaring at night outside our tent. Everything you would expect from a Safari you will experience. In addition, the food is awesome! If you are contemplating booking a Safari, just know if you go with Gamewatchers, not only will your experience be incredible but if something unexpected should occur, they are with you every step of the way. What happened to me could have led to disastrous results, being in a foreign country, not knowing any of the things you need to know when put into a situation like mine. But, because of Gamewatchers involvement, our experience was top notch even through my illness.

Contemplating a fantastic safari and wishing to make a real difference to conservation and human development, Gamewatchers Safari is your ticket. Jake Grieves-Cook started the unique symbiosis between the Masai Peoples of Kenya and eco-conservation safaris over 40 years ago. Gamewatchers encourages the Masai Peoples to resist selling to commercial interests, provides jobs through conservation activities and the safari service industry at all levels: kitchen help through management. Especially important, Gamewatchers aids Masai schools. Unsolicited, our group of three made donations to for schools supplies at both the Porini Amboseli and Porini Cheetah camps. The experience: the Masai guides bring their cultural education of the animal wildlife with schooling in modern animal husbandry, answering numerous questions from our group. Be advised, ask many questions! The guides love it. Your experience will be far more enriched over a unique “zoo” experience. Gamewatchers balances the early morning and later afternoon and sometimes nighttime game drives nicely with meals and rest periods. The food is substantial; you’ll gain weight! And is a combination of Western cuisine augmented with traditional Kenya preparation and side dishes. I’m celiac (gluten free) and the chiefs at most sites accommodated with GF breads, muffins or pasta. Expanding your cultural sensitivities: the many hours sharing our Masai guides’, service people and managers’ life with our US cultural experience brought to mind something I learned long ago, but didn’t really appreciate: intelligence and knowledge are entirely separate. The Masai are only now, through education, learning western “knowledge” about science, environment, etc. But they demonstrate much intelligence creatively living on natural resources. The intimate experience at a Masai village at the Porini Amboseli camp, without tourist hawking, will remain in my mind, a privileged encounter. The animals: the conservancies limit tourists / vehicles in contrast to when we drove through other game areas (e.g., national parks) with many more vehicles. The conservancy experience afforded a feeling of being with the animals as opposed to invading their space. In general, you’re quite close to all species, even the lions. We saw lions, cheetahs, the rarer leopard, elephants (numerous), three types of giraffes, two types of zebra, hippos, a black rhino, wildebeests, hyaenas, etc.; over 40 different species of mammals and birds. Gamewatchers provided a very useful mammal guide. After a few days, our little group became quite good at spotting and naming the animals. Important to know: the safari’s are not physically taxing, because you spend most of the time in an open air, well strutted, safari jeep. Never-the-less, anyone with significant back problems should reconsider. It’s a “bumpy ride”. We visited in the dry season at the end of September, when you’re lungs may experience Kenya dust. The good side, nearly no bugs! Appropriate caution and supplies are a necessity. Our itinerary: After two days in Nairobi, Brad (US consultant) in consultation with a couple of group members put together a nicely balanced lodge and safari camping (glamping!) experience with two day stays at five different sites. Beginning at the Kilaguni Serena Safari Lodge in Tsavo West, we drove to the Porini Amboseli Camp. Then we flew to the luxurious Saruni Samburu lodge with open air rooms perched high above the Samburu conservancy. Next a flight back to Nairobi then on to Porini Lion Camp and explored the Masai Mara. We missed the last of the great wildebeest migration by a few days. Their stragglers made an early morning balloon flight spectacular. Then we drove a short distance to the Cheetah Camp, a unique partnership between two delightful nature lovers from India and Gamewatchers. This is the most modern of the camps and in situated in an area particularly known for lions and cheetahs. Recent late afternoon thunderstorms at Lion and Cheetah camps made for green landscapes and dramatic evenings with clouds. By the way, we were within 20 feet of the famous cheetah mom and four cubs, highlighted in the recent Serengeti series on the Discovery channel. Cubs are bigger now, but their play tends to scare away “dinner” that mom is trying hard to procure. Many custom itineraries can be created through Gamewatchers traveling in different countries. Please give them a serious look!

Gamewatchers Adventure Camp at Masai Mara

Who is Gamewatchers Safaris Ltd and what are they famous for?

They are a leading African safari tour operator that also owns and runs the award-winning Porini Camps in Kenya. Established in 1989, Gamewatchers Safaris is one of the longest-running African safari companies. They have been operating in Kenya for over 30 years.

This safari company is famous for its exclusive tailor-made safaris and eco-friendly Porini Camps in Kenya.

Private Conservancy Masai Mara in Kenya

The company is owned by Kenyan citizen, Jake Grieves-Cook, who founded Gamewatchers Safaris in 1989. An icon in African tourism and wildlife conservation, Jake has been involved in Kenya's safari industry since 1972!

Gamewatchers Safaris has a team of about nine African safari consultants and a team of customer services staff on the ground in Kenya. Other staff members include a Managing Director, Corporate Affairs Manager, Conservation & CSR Coordinator, and Product & Marketing Manager. Gamewatchers Safaris & Porini Camps also has over 10 safari experts (travel consultants) representing them across the globe, from the USA and UK to India and Australia.

Then there are all their camp managers, game rangers, drivers, and hospitality staff members at the Porini Camps in Kenya. They employ about 240 staff members at the Porini Camps and conservancies alone. Job preference is given to local Maasai people from the communities that own the conservancies so their camp staff consists mostly of Kenyans from the area.

Mara Porini Camp staff in Kenya

All-in-all there is a massive team of international and local people involved in running Gamewatchers Safaris & Porini Camps in Kenya and beyond.

This internationally acclaimed African safari company specializes in personalized (tailor-made) safari experiences to small, eco-friendly lodges and camps.

Gamewatchers Safaris offers some of the best tailor-made safaris to private wildlife conservancies and top national parks in East Africa. They take visitors to the leading eco-safari lodges, hotels, and camps in Kenya, Tanzania, and elsewhere. Of course, this includes safaris to Porini Camps and the other eco-safari camps they manage.

Kenya tented camp room

The smaller safari camps they visit provide a more intimate and exclusive African safari experience. But, Gamewatchers Safaris is more than a tour operator and camp owner. It is an active champion of wildlife conservation and sustainable tourism in Africa.

In 2020, Gamewacthers Safaris launched an initiative called “Adopt-an-Acre” to help sustain the wildlife conservancies and camps during the COVID-19 pandemic. With the drop in tourism, this initiative enables anyone to adopt parts of the conservancies in Kenya with donations being used to pay the landowners and staff salaries. (More about this Adopt-an-Acre in Kenya Initiative).

Gamewatchers Safaris Ltd is based in Kenya with its headquarters located in Nairobi. They offer safari tours in Kenya , Tanzania , and Rwanda as well as beach holiday packages to Zanzibar and other African beach destinations.

In Kenya, their safari destinations include Masai Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo, Ol Pejeta, Lake Nakuru, Laikipia, Samburu, Lewa Downs, Meru, and Shompole.

Ol Kinyei Conservancy - Masai Mara

Their collection of safari camps is in Kenya. These include the acclaimed Porini Camps, located in Ol Pejeta Conservancy (near the Aberdare & Mount Kenya national parks), Selenkay Conservancy (at Amboseli National Park), and Ol Kinyei Conservancy and Olare Orok Conservancy (both in the Greater Masai Mara Ecosystem).

Porini Mara Camp - Gamewatchers Safaris

They also run two Adventure Camps in Selenkay and Ol Kinyei conservancies, the Rhino River eco-lodge in Meru National Park, and the Nairobi Tented Camp in Nairobi National Park.

How Gamewatchers protects key habitats, local people, and wildlife in Kenya?

Gamewatchers Safaris has played a pivotal role in creating and sustaining private conservancies in Kenya.

Jake Grieves-Cook (the founder of Gamewatchers Safaris) is one of the leading pioneers of eco-tourism in Africa. In the late 1990s, he introduced the ‘conservancy concept’ as an alternative approach to wildlife conservation in Kenya. This conservancy model entails leasing land from the local Maasai to create game reserves, called wildlife conservancies, next to the national parks.

Wildebeest giraffes large

In 2005, Gamewatchers Safaris & Porini Camps established Ol Kinyei Conservancy in partnership with 171 local landowners. This was the first conservancy in the Greater Masai Mara Ecosystem. It still belongs to the local Maasai and now comprises 17,500 acres.

In 2018 Ol Kineyei achieved IUCN Green List status for “its good governance, sound design and planning, and effective management”.

 Porini Rhino Camp Maasai Culture

Today Gamewatchers Safaris runs six Porini Camps in private conservancies that they have been instrumental in creating and sustaining. These conservancies continue to bring direct benefits to the people and wildlife in Kenya, serving as a successful model for conservation in Africa and beyond.

The Conservancy Concept explained by Gamewatchers Safaris founder Jake Grieves-Cook

Saving Wildlife Habitat, Kenya from jakegc on Vimeo .

By partnering with local landowners, Gamewatchers Safaris has used eco-tourism to effectively conserve the wildlife and wild habitats of Kenya whilst helping local communities to generate income. This has transformed the wilderness areas around  Amboseli National Park  and Masai Mara National Reserve in particular.

"It is tourism that pays for the conservancies to continue in existence so if you come out for a safari staying in our camps in the conservancies then that will definitely be a big help for conservation and for the communities who have set aside their land as a home for wildlife." - Jake Grieves-Cook

And, in 2020 when tourism plunged due to COVID-19, Gamewatchers Safaris launched an Adopt-an-Acre initiative (featured on Ecotourism Kenya ) to help support the wildlife conservancies and local communities.

What makes Gamewatchers Safaris one of the best safari companies in Africa?

Sustainable and responsible tourism is at the heart of what they do. The core mission of Gamewatchers Safaris & Porini Camps is:

"...using tourism to protect habitat and partnering with communities as we do that." - M. Brar, MD of Gamewatchers Safaris & Porini Camps

Gamewatchers Safaris plays a critical role in Kenyan wildlife conservation and local socio-economic development through their involvement in private conservancies and their eco-safari camps. Beyond this, they also contribute to social upliftment in Kenya through CSR programs.

"Our community outreach projects include donations towards school fees and equipment and the employment of local community members as rangers to protect the widlife."

Not only are they a socially and environmentally sustainable company but they are also one of the oldest and most experienced safari companies in Africa. Even better, their decades of experience are rooted in the Kenya safari industry. Who better to experience the wild places and wildlife of Kenya with?

Their safaris and tented camps are highly rated and sought-after. And their mission – to conserve wildlife and support local communities in Kenya through low-impact tourism – is 100% worth supporting.

Many of the Gamewatchers Safaris include flights from Nairobi to the national parks and conservancies and back. This cuts out the long cross-country drives and gives you more time to explore the destinations and watch animals in the wild. Even their more budget-friendly safaris (featured on African Budget Safaris ), often include flights between Nairobi and Masai Mara National Reserve.

How much do Gamewatchers Safari tours cost?

The cheapest Kenya Safari Tours with Gamewatchers Safaris cost from $1,300 to $2,300 per person. The 3-day Kenya Safari Packages include scheduled flights from Nairobi to Masai Mara (return). These are tented camping safaris so you stay in walk-in safari tents (with en-suite bathrooms), not in rooms at a conventional lodge.

Porini Bush Camp Tent, Kenya

Thus, the tented camps provide more comfort than standard camping (in dome tents) but they have less impact on the environment and cost less than lodge safaris in Kenya.

Their most pricey budget Kenya Safari costs about $4,300 to $5,000 per person. But, that's for a 12-day Kenya Lodge Safari to Masai Mara, Amboseli, Tsavo, Samburu, Lake Nakuru, and the Great Rift Valley including 4x4 transport, most meals, a qualified guide, and more! This is not a tented camping safari. You stay at high-quality safari lodges.

Of course, they offer more expensive, luxury safaris in Kenya and other African countries. If you want to spend more on a private, tailor-made safari talk to one of our African travel advisors who can design a customized safari program for you. The Porini Camps are small, eco-friendly tented camps located in the exclusive private conservancies of Kenya.

Porini Bush Camp Kenya Safari

These intimate safari camps are set in wildlife conservancies near or bordering on the best Kenya national parks, from Masai Mara to Amboseli and Tsavo. The wildlife conservancies are home to an abundance of wildlife and offer some of the finest game-viewing experiences in Kenya.

Besides teeming with large mammals (lions, elephants, leopards, cheetahs, and more) the wildlife conservancies are private and thus visitor numbers are limited to the handful of guests staying at the eco-friendly Porini Camps.

Accommodation at the Porini Camps is comfortable and offers exceptional value for money. These are not luxury camps with private hot tubs and personal butlers. They are authentic African safari camps set inside exclusive private conservancies.
