Simple Flying

10 ways to fly more comfortably.

How to make your travel experience so much better.

Aircraft seating seems to be smaller and more uncomfortable than ever, and flying is stressful enough already. What tips and tricks can we use to make the next flight more enjoyable and comfortable? Here are some ideas from flight attendants .

10 Headphones

It's nice to bring your own headphones for using the inflight entertainment, as the onboard headphones are repeatedly cleaned, but not always. Noise-canceling headphones are great for listening to some relaxing music or even when taking a nap. They may also be useful for blocking out the noisy family sitting behind you.

Essential for long-haul flights, a comfortable eye mask will help avoid the red eye and improve the quality of sleep. Memory foam eye masks tend to be most comfortable and work much better than the airline masks. You can also try the self-heating temporary eye masks. Very soothing on a flight!

There are all kinds of travel pillows out there now, especially aimed at the long-haul traveler. It's all down to personal preference, but a child's mini feather pillow is extremely comfortable, easily washed, and feels luxurious. Comfort is everything.

It's always useful to have a bag of snacks available, especially if the inflight meal isn't great. Take a selection of healthy snacks to keep you going. Cereal bars, fruit, crackers, individually wrapped pieces of cheese, and nuts and seeds are all good options.

6 Book your seat

Avoid the mad rush at the airport or finding that the only seat available is in the middle of two strangers. At least by booking your seat in advance, you can plan your comfort better.

5 Entertainment

Download your favorite shows or movies in advance, and you'll always have something worth watching. The inflight entertainment might be broken, or the airline doesn't have any. Seeing familiar shows that you enjoy is also very comforting during a potentially stressful flight.

Always make sure that your travel clothes are comfortable yet appropriate. It's amazing how many people dress from their holiday and then realize it's actually winter at home. Loose layers often work best and can be taken off if too hot at the airport or added if freezing cold on the aircraft.

A scarf is always useful as an extra layer and can be rolled up and used as a pillow in case you forgot one. It can also be used as a blanket when the air conditioning gets too much.

2 Amenity kit

Make your own amenity kit in advance, so you feel like you can have a treat onboard. Collect or buy sample-size products in a small toiletry bag. A comb, toothbrush and toothpaste, cologne, and facial spray are all nice to have at hand. Feel refreshed during your flight.

The best thing of all to take onboard your flight. A large bottle of water should keep you hydrated. You might only get a couple of glasses of water from the flight attendants, and they won't have enough water onboard to offer everyone a large bottle. We lose so much water from our bodies during a flight, so it is very important to drink lots of water to keep healthy.

Do you have any particular tips for making your flight as comfortable as possible? Leave a comment below and share it with the community and us.

Air Travel Is Hell. Here Are 25 Little Ways to Make It Easier on Your Body

25 Easy Ways to Make Air Travel Easier on Your Body

All products are independently selected by our editors. If you buy something, we may earn an affiliate commission.

It’s not a skill I brag about a lot, but I’m good at going to the airport and getting on a plane. I’ve flown multiple times a year ever since I moved from the East Coast to the Midwest for college in 2013, and in my not-so-humble opinion, I have it down to a bit of a science. I’m not saying I look forward to air travel, which has only gotten more fraught since 2020 , but I do have a grip on making the whole ordeal as painless as possible, even on eye-wateringly long, cramped international flights.

This isn’t to say that flying is easy on the brain and body. Quite the opposite! A plane ride is a gauntlet of punishing seating, loud strangers, gross toilets, timing that feels both extremely urgent and totally out of your control, and weird snack options. The experience can leave you sore, stressed out, and exhausted.

While so many aspects are out of your control when it comes to the actual flight itself, there are simple ways to make the whole thing more comfortable, dignified, and even…a teeny bit more fun. Here are some easy adjustments that, individually and cumulatively, can make traveling on a plane as breezy as possible.

1. Do your best to get a good night’s sleep the night before your flight—that means at least seven hours—even if you plan to doze on the plane, which can be a gamble. That bedrock of rest will help you deal with whatever curveballs are thrown at you: delayed flights, snoring aisle mates, wild turbulence—whatever. Every inconvenience will be more bearable if you’re not rolling up to the airport exhausted.

2. There are a few things you can pack that will make flying more physically comfortable. I preach the gospel of those foam pillows—I grabbed this compactible Cabeau pillow from a Hudson News a few years ago, and it’s been my constant companion ever since. Wearing mine makes me feel like a dog in a cone, but I never fail to throw it in my backpack anyway because it makes napping way easier on my neck. If you’re a light sleeper, pack an eye mask to block out the ever-shifting plane lighting.

3. While you’re at it: Don’t forget a pair of earplugs or noise-canceling headphones , so you can feel empathy instead of vitriol for parents flying with antsy, vocal kids. (And if you’re the person with those antsy, vocal kids? Here’s a Condé Nast Traveler guide to help.)

4. Store anything you can’t go a day without in your “personal item,” just in case you have to check your carry-on at the gate: Think medication, a toothbrush/toothpaste/floss kit, and the book you’re using to look mysterious at the airport Starbucks. Worried about whether your medicine is okay to bring aboard? Per TSA , you’re allowed to carry on more than 3.4 ounces of liquid medications, and unused syringes are fine if they accompany injectable meds—just know that, in both cases, you might have to go through additional screenings. All of this preparation downgrades a luggage-related mishap from a potentially trip-altering emergency to a big annoyance.

5. We’re so lucky to be alive during the golden age of athleisure . My tried and true uniform: A sweater or sweatshirt that can double as a blanket or pillow, slip-on shoes with gym socks so I can glide through TSA without bare feet touching the airport floor, leggings , and breathable cotton underwear . We’re going for function over form, but looking a little schlubby in public also makes me feel like I’m a celebrity hiding from the paparazzi. Delusional? Maybe. Comfortable? Absolutely.

6. Prep your body for hours of sitting with a gentle workout routine. Personal trainers shared 18 different moves with SELF to help minimize the aches and pains that come with sitting in the same place for hours at a time, including banded squats, glute bridges, a calf stretch, and a classic child’s pose. And if you’re feeling shoulder , back , and neck pain mid-flight? Stretch it all out. You might look a little goofy doing a quick spinal decompression thousands of feet up in the air, but that’s a small price to pay for comfort—and you’re probably never going to see these people again anyways!

7. Wear a pair of compression socks . If you’re flying for more than six hours, they can help reduce the risk of blood clots that comes with sitting for long periods of time for some folks. Though this risk is minimal for people who don’t have certain health conditions, it’s increased by high altitudes. Compression socks can also help combat any related swelling and discomfort—your ankles and calves will seriously thank you.

8. On the plane make an effort to get up from your seat and take a stroll down the aisle, especially if you have a higher risk of developing a blood clot. A little movement can also help ease any travel-induced bloating . A quick jaunt every two to three hours you’re in the air should do the trick—and if you’re drinking water and snacking away, that’s probably how often you’ll need to make a pit stop to the bathroom anyway.

9. If you have a disability, you probably know that airlines legally have to accommodate you in the US—but that doesn’t mean they’re good at it. To ensure your needs are met as best as possible, try to get to your gate at least 90 minutes before your flight is set to take off. That way you have time to request what you need before the airline staff has to deal with an entire flight’s worth of people boarding the plane. Arriving early also gives you time to call the airline’s complaints resolution official , the legally mandated expert on accessibility-related travel issues, if you run into any problems—their number should be available on your airline’s website, and it’s worth looking up and saving in your phone ahead of time just in case you need it.

10. If you’re traveling with a mobility device like a manual wheelchair or power chair, things can get extra complicated. This is a great multipart guide to traveling with a wheelchair, and this is a really helpful Reddit thread about taking your manual wheelchair on a plane—or, if absolutely necessary, checking it at the gate. One user suggested bookmarking this page , which outlines the federal regulation that states airlines have to at least try and store your collapsible wheelchair in the plane’s cabin.

11. As unfair as it is, flying comfortably while fat requires some extra preparation. Some airlines have gotten with the times and established specific policies for “customers of size,” which is the terminology carriers typically use. Southwest, for example, offers complimentary additional seats if a passenger can’t fit into a single one, including by reimbursing extra seats bought in advance.

12. When you can’t book ahead of time but think you’ll need more space, you should ask the staff at the gate whether it’s possible for you to switch to a part of the plane with an extra empty seat or even to an entire free row if your flight isn’t full, as Katie, a Delta Airlines flight attendant, tells SELF. (Katie requested that SELF omit her last name for professional reasons.) “Try just going to the gate agent and saying, ‘Hey, if there’s anywhere with a middle seat open, I’d love to be there,’” she says.

13. Request a seatbelt extender as you board the plane—according to Katie, that’s the easiest time for flight attendants to accommodate your request. “We have all different planes, the seats are made differently sometimes,” she says, so even if you don’t always need an extender, it’s worth asking if you think there’s any chance you could be uncomfortable. (You can check SeatGuru to find the width of the seats on your plane.) Also, it might seem like a timesaver to bring your own extender from home, but you’ll need to ask the flight attendants in order to ensure the one you’re using is Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)–compliant, because not every at-home model conforms to the aviation safety administration’s safety regulations.

14. Mask up. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) still recommend that you wear high-quality masks or respirators while traveling, especially in “crowded or tight spaces with poor ventilation like airport jetways,” on planes where the ventilation system is switched off, and on trains and buses—a.k.a. the way many airports require travelers to hop from terminal to terminal. For the best protection, grab a pack of disposable N95, KN95, or KF94 masks . Keep a few on you at all times so you can put on a new one if long-term wear is making the one you came to the airport with feel stale.

15. While you don’t need to use a Clorox wipe on every inch of your seat to protect yourself from germs, it’s good to be cautious about touching shared surfaces on the plane, especially if you’re immunocompromised or traveling to visit someone who is. One thing you do need to thoroughly sanitize: your hands! Make sure you wash them after using the bathroom, and don’t be afraid to get liberal with the hand sanitizer too. “Hand sanitizer is going to be a better investment than bringing a whole tub of wipes,” Peter Chin-Hong, MD , a medical professor who specializes in infectious diseases at University of California, San Francisco tells SELF. “And washing [or disinfecting] your hands before touching your face—that’s probably the most important thing.” Dr. Chin-Hong also says that because bathroom door handles tend to be particularly germy, it’s worth finding an alternate way to open the door after you’re done, like with a napkin or your elbow.

16. According to the World Health Organization , the low humidity levels on a plane that do a number on your skin, eyes, and lips don’t actually dehydrate you internally—but it’s still important to drink enough water to stay adequately hydrated and comfortable during your flight. Bring an empty reusable water bottle in your carry-on and fill it up before you get on the plane. You might need to have a few plastic cups of water on an especially long flight too—but avoid refilling your water bottle in the airplane bathroom, because studies have shown it can be particularly germy.

17. Because plane travel is notorious for giving you that gross chapped feeling, nasal spray, eye drops, lip balm, and moisturizing lotion can also help if you’re otherwise feeling parched.

18. If you have lots of flying-related anxiety, especially during takeoff and landing, you could find relief from deep breathing exercises or other quick physical destressors , like activating your “dive reflex” by placing a cold can of soda against your cheek or forehead or manually relaxing your muscles one by one. It’s also a good idea to download a meditation app if you think you might need a little extra guidance.

19. Take it easy if you’re drinking alcohol while flying . Booze is notoriously dehydrating and can lead to big sleep disruptions—the latter of which is not the vibe if you want to arrive at your destination well-rested or need to make a tight connecting flight. Still, as long as you’re drinking plenty of water, a glass of wine or a beer probably won’t hurt anything other than your wallet.

20. If you’re prone to motion sickness, plan accordingly. From there, stay hydrated, eat small amounts of food throughout your trip, and suck on hard candies or ginger lozenges for a little extra digestive help. (Skip the ginger ale—the sugar content could actually make you feel worse.)

21. If you end up hurling midair, either in a barf bag or the bathroom, try not to rinse your mouth out with water from the airplane sink—a 2019 study found that most running water on planes is unsanitary. Take your water bottle to the bathroom, or ask the flight attendants for a cup of water. On your way back to your seat, ask for a cup of ginger tea or club soda to ease any further stomach upset. Drink more water, too, since vomiting dehydrates you.

22. Airplane food… famously not the best , if it’s even on offer! If you want to feel satiated for the duration of your flight, prep an arsenal of snacks (so you don’t wind up paying $30 for a bag of Craisins and some red pepper hummus). Ideally you’d have something that’s easy to carry and eat, protein-forward to keep you full, and doesn’t generate a ton of trash. (Here are the official guidelines about specific foods you can bring on planes in the US.) Think mixed nuts, protein bars, or a banana. You can always just copy what a registered dietitian packs to eat on trips , including her signature “airport sandwich.”

23. Be lightly friendly to your neighbors. That doesn’t mean you have to listen to anyone’s life story, but a simple “hello” and a smile as you prepare for takeoff can go a long way. Don’t you want to be on good terms with the person whose lap you’re climbing across because you have to get to the bathroom? (Being cordial might also make it way easier to find common ground if someone is being really loud when you’re trying to sleep or otherwise encroaching on your already-spartan personal space.)

24. Do yourself a profound favor and let go of the illusion that you might “get some work done” during your flight. Why the charade? Save yourself the additional stress of forced productivity—the middle seat of a flight probably isn’t going to be the site of your finest work ever.

25. When you’ve safely landed, stretch and move your body again once you reach your destination for maximum cramp-banishing effect. Then put the tiny indignities of flying in your rearview mirror, where they belong—at least, until your flight home.

Love it or hate it, flying on an airplane is a common part of travel. So, if you have to fly, you might as well make the experience as enjoyable as possible.

We’ve compiled this list of 46 of our best airplane and travel hacks to elevate your flight experience, including everything from flight booking hacks and packing hacks to airport hacks and inflight hacks.

We hope you’ll be able to use some of these flight tricks to make your next travel experience as awesome as possible.

Flight Booking Hacks

A great flight starts with a great booking experience. Try these tricks the next time you have to book a flight.

If you want to find cheap flights , it’s best to be flexible. When your dates aren’t set in stone, you can use the flexible date search option in Google Flights to see what dates offer the cheapest tickets. Just visit Google Flights , enter your origin and destination cities, then click on the travel dates.

Google Flights search

You’ll see the prices for your flight every day on the calendar. Use the trip duration settings at the bottom to choose your desired trip length or play around to see if the trip length affects the ticket price. The lowest-priced tickets will be shown in green.

Google Flights calendar

Another way to keep an eye out for the lowest price tickets is by signing up for flight deal alerts . Websites like Google Flights, Kayak , and Skyscanner allow you to sign up for fare alerts on your chosen route so you know if and when the price drops.

We couldn’t write a flight hack post without mentioning points and miles, could we? Of course not, since that’s our specialty! Using points to book your flight is an easy way to save on the out-of-pocket expense of travel. Plus, using points to book business and first class flights is a great way to make your entire flight experience so much more comfortable than flying in the back of the plane.

Hot Tip: If you’re brand new to the points and miles game, start with our beginner’s guide to bring you up to speed.

Using miles to book a flight is a great way to fly, but finding award availability can sometimes prove to be difficult. If you need help, look at a tool like ExpertFlyer , Award Nexus , or Seat Spy . These websites can help you find award seat availability without spending all day searching.

Whether or not this is your first trip on a specific airline or your fiftieth, sign up for the airline’s frequent flyer program and make sure your frequent flyer number is attached to your reservation. If you never plan on flying the airline again, you can credit the miles you’ll earn to a partner airline.

No one wants to get stuck in a middle seat in the back of the plane next to the bathroom, right? That one is obvious, but there are pros and cons to other seats as well.

  • If you get motion sickness, choose a seat over the wing so you’ll feel less turbulence .
  • Choose a seat in front of the plane if you’ve got a short connecting time.
  • If you’re traveling with another person, choose a window and aisle seat toward the back of the plane. Unless the flight is sold out, you’ll have a decent chance that no one will choose the middle seat between you.
  • If you want to sleep during your flight, go with a window seat.
  • If you’re more comfortable having easy access to the bathroom, an aisle seat toward the back of the plane will be your best bet.
  • If you definitely need a small bag with you during the flight, don’t choose a bulkhead seat because they don’t have anywhere to store a carry-on other than the overhead bins.

Use a tool like SeatGuru to find seat maps for your flight, along with notes about the pros and cons of every seat. This website is a must if you want to find the perfect seat on your next flight.

Thankfully, many airlines are offering flexible cancellation and change policies these days, but be sure to read the fine print. These policies often don’t apply to the cheapest basic economy fares. If you want flexibility, you might need to pay a little more upfront.

Packing Hacks

Packing a suitcase is an art, but it doesn’t have to be difficult. These easy packing hacks will help you save space and ensure that you’re prepared for anything.

A packing tip that many can agree on is that packing cubes are a must. These zippered bags come in lots of different sizes and colors to keep your clothes organized. When you arrive at your destination, just move the packing cubes to the drawers, unzip, and you’ve unpacked in an instant.

If you’re packing for multiple people in 1 bag, assign everyone a different color packing cube to keep everything organized.

A large scarf is a versatile item that is the perfect travel accessory. When you pack one in your carry-on bag, you can use it as a blanket to stay warm or for lumbar support to stay comfortable on the plane. Then use it as a scarf in cold weather destinations or as a beach cover-up for tropical vacations.

Picture this: your flight arrives at your vacation destination and you’re so excited to hit the pool at your resort — but your luggage didn’t make it yet! What could be a wasted vacation day for others is no big deal for you because you’re prepared. You packed an extra set of clothes in your carry-on , including important vacation items like a bathing suit, sunscreen, and flip-flops, so you can wait for your delayed luggage while sipping a tropical cocktail by the pool instead of being grumpy in your hotel room in the jeans and sneakers you wore on the plane.

Packing a suitcase

Dry airplane air can easily dehydrate your body. In addition to drinking plenty of water on your flight, don’t forget to pack lip balm and hand lotion in your carry-on bag to combat uncomfortable dry skin. If you typically wear contact lenses, opt for glasses on your flight since the plane’s dry air can make wearing contact lenses uncomfortable.

Make sure your toiletries are in travel-sized containers if you’re planning on using carry-on luggage only. You can invest in a good travel toiletry bag to keep everything organized, or opt for the budget route and put travel-sized containers in a Ziploc bag to keep them from leaking on your clothes.

Pre-flight Hacks

These tricks of the trade are things to think about before you get on your flight.

If you’ll be traveling somewhere where Wi-Fi might be spotty or unavailable, it’s a good idea to download offline maps of the areas you’ll be visiting so you can access them even when you can’t access the internet.

To download a Google Map for use offline, just type in your destination. Then click on the destination name at the bottom of your screen.

How to download Google maps for offline use

Then click on the 3 dots in the upper right-hand corner and select Download offline map .

Dowload offline map on Google Maps

While many airlines offer inflight entertainment, there’s nothing better than knowing you’ve got plenty of your favorites ready to go. Download podcasts, music, audiobooks, or Netflix shows before you take off to ensure you have plenty to keep you occupied during your flight.

If you’re planning on watching movies or shows on your phone, bring a small stand or mount to set up on your tray table so you don’t have to hold your phone for the whole flight.

Be prepared. Charge all of your electronic devices the day before you leave so they are ready to go for your flight. Keep all of your charging cords handy in your carry-on bag in case you need to charge up at the airport, or bring a portable charger if you think you’ll need more battery power during your flight.

If you’ll be traveling internationally, bring a pen . This will save you from having to rely on your fellow passengers to borrow a pen on the flight to fill out customs forms.

If you’re on a long-haul flight that will be serving a meal and you’ve got dietary restrictions, be sure to order a special meal before your flight. If you wait until you’re on the plane, you’ll be stuck with the standard options.

Flying With Kids Hacks

Flying with kids can be an adventure, but with these pro tips, it will be as stress-free as possible.

Did you know that many airplanes (especially on long-haul international flights) have a few seats that can accommodate a bassinet on board (usually the bulkhead seats)? If you’re flying with a baby , book early and call the airline to reserve one of these seats.

If you’re a parent, you know that snacks are the answer to about 85% of your kids’ problems. This is no different on a flight. Pack snacks and everything will be okay.

Air pressure changes can affect kids’ ears more than adults’ ears. To help your little one pop their ears, give them a lollipop.

We aren’t saying you should always bribe your kids with new toys, but a long flight is a great time to go ahead and bribe your kids with a new toy ! Having something new will help keep them happy and entertained for longer.

If your child is sitting in the window seat, give them a package of gel window clings to play with, or try an airplane toy for a child’s first flight. The toy itself doesn’t matter as much as the novelty of having a new toy.

If all else fails, or even if you just want to keep things simple, bring a tablet with plenty of shows or games downloaded, along with child-friendly headphones . Most adults use screens for the whole flight, so why not let your kids do the same?

Kids have a ton of energy, and it’s a great idea to get rid of as much of it as possible before you board the plane. Many airports these days have specially designed kids’ play areas for this exact purpose.

If your airport doesn’t have a play area, take kids on a walk and let them ride the people movers (making sure they don’t get in the way of others trying to quickly make it to their gate, of course). When all else fails, try to find an empty area (the far end of the terminal is probably your best bet) and let them run wild.

Pre-flight Airport Hacks

You can make the time you spend in the airport before your flight as comfortable and stress-free as possible with these airport hacks.

While you think you’ll remember where you parked, it’s not quite so easy to remember after a week-long vacation. To help your memory out, take a picture of your parking space with any recognizable features and the parking row number so you can find your car easily when you return.

How would you like to breeze through the TSA security line — without taking your shoes off ? That can all be achieved when you have  TSA PreCheck . This program essentially gives you access to shorter security lines and the ability to pass through without taking your shoes and jacket off and without having to remove your laptop and toiletries from your bag. It’ll save time and hassle each time you fly.

According to the TSA , the majority of TSA PreCheck passengers wait less than 5 minutes in security lines.

Hot Tip: While TSA PreCheck costs $78 for a 5-year membership (and many would argue it’s absolutely worth that price), you can get it for free with many credit cards .

Breeze through the security lines without having to even take your ID out of your wallet. CLEAR is a program that allows you to do just that because it uses biometrics to verify your identity. After your identity is successfully confirmed (through an eye scan), you’ll be escorted to the front of the security line.

CLEAR costs $189 annually and is available in select airports across the country. Several credit cards include a discounted or complimentary CLEAR membership as part of their benefits.

If you have a choice, choose the security lines to the left — people tend to naturally go right more often than not, so the left lines may be shorter.

Regardless of whether or not you have TSA PreCheck, be ready to get through the security line quickly . Have your ID and boarding pass ready to go — do not wait until you’re at the front of the line to get these things out. If you don’t have TSA PreCheck, make sure you have your liquids and laptop easily accessible so you can remove them quickly without holding up the line.

Hot Tip: Be prepared before your flight. Know what you can and can’t bring through TSA security and check these TSA security FAQs for the answers to some common questions.

Checking your luggage can be expensive these days. While it might be easy to just bring a carry-on bag for some trips, many of us will still need to check a bag from time to time. You can avoid paying crazy baggage fees by choosing an airline that doesn’t charge for bags, like Southwest, by having airline elite status, or by having an airline credit card. Many airline credit cards come with free checked baggage , which can save you lots of money, even if you only fly a couple of times a year.

Buying water in an airport gift shop is expensive and isn’t great for the environment. Instead, bring an empty water bottle through security and then fill it at the filling station or drinking fountain after security. You’ll save money and reduce your plastic usage at the same time.

With many of us using fitness trackers and smartwatches these days, getting a recommended number of daily steps or movement time has become commonplace. To balance out sitting on an airplane for hours at a time, take the time before your flight to walk. Getting a few laps in around the terminal before you board your flight is a great way to stay active, even on travel days, and it provides great people-watching, too.

Before you attempt to pack for a week-long trip in 1 carry-on bag, make sure it’s the right size for a carry-on , and make sure you can lift it up to get it in the overhead bin. While other passengers will often offer to help lift heavy bags into the overhead bins, savvy travelers can manage their bags on their own.

Airports are places we all spend a lot of time just waiting. So, next time you fly, plan to wait in style in an airport lounge . Lounges offer quieter places to get work done or to grab a snack and drink before your flight. Some even offer luxury amenities like showers and massages.

Having a Priority Pass membership allows you to access over 1,400 airport lounge locations in over 600 cities across the world. The best part is that there are many credit cards with Priority Pass access.

While it’s not inevitable, sometimes your luggage doesn’t make it onto the same flight as you. When this happens, you’ll most likely need to fill out lost/delayed luggage paperwork that will include an area for you to describe your luggage. A description of “black suitcase” isn’t going to cut it, so make sure you know exactly what your luggage looks like. When in doubt, take a photo of it before you fly, for reference.

Airplane Hacks

We love traveling here at Upgraded Points and have picked up lots of tricks along the way. These airplane hacks will help make your flight as comfortable and as fun as possible.

When choosing a spot for your carry-on bag in the overhead bin, go for the space on the opposite side of your seat, directly across from or slightly in front of your seat (never put your bag behind you). That way you can see your bag from your seat and you’ll easily be able to grab it after the flight without having to wait for the people behind you to deplane before you can grab your bag.

Putting luggage in the overhead bin.

One of the keys to really relaxing and enjoying a flight is the ability to block out airplane noise to enjoy your podcast, music, or movie. Because of that, having noise-canceling headphones is a great way to make your flight more enjoyable.

No, we aren’t suggesting you need to brush your teeth on that quick flight from Chicago to New York City, but brushing your teeth on long-haul flights or flights where you’ll be sleeping can really make a difference in how refreshed you feel. Be sure to pack your toothbrush and travel-sized toothpaste (or even a disposable product like Colgate Wisp ), and don’t forget to use bottled water.

While this should come easily to many people, it bears repeating. Be polite and respectful to the flight attendants. They are there to ensure your safety and to help you have a comfortable flight and they deserve your respect. If you’re having a bad flight or don’t like a policy, don’t take it out on them.

If you think you’ll need extra attention from the flight attendants during your trip, consider bringing a small, edible gift like a piece of chocolate or a cookie (prepackaged, store-bought) as a gesture of thanks.

While airplane cleaning standards have increased since the COVID-19 pandemic began, things like tray tables are not necessarily cleaned between each flight. According to Forbes , airplane seatback tray tables are the dirtiest part of the airplane , so be sure to pack some disinfecting wipes and clean your tray table before using it.

Be sure to drink plenty of water during your flight to stay hydrated. While you might not like it, it’s best to avoid alcohol on planes, since it can speed up dehydration and could lead to a fuzzy start to your vacation. It’s also best to avoid carbonated drinks as the bubbles combined with changes in air pressure can cause discomfort for some people.

Alaska Airlines Crew Member Serves Boxed Water

There’s a definite art to sleeping on a plane, and unless you’re one of those lucky people that can fall asleep anywhere, you’ll need all the help you can get. Use a  sleeping mask and earplugs to block out light and sound, and bring along a comfortable travel pillow to give your head and neck some support. Choosing a window seat can also make sleeping easier since you can lean up against the side of the plane.

Another trick to help you sleep on airplanes is to wear a jacket or sweatshirt with a hood . Putting up the hood will help keep you warm but will also cover your ears and part of your face, giving you more of a sense of comfort and privacy. Some hoods are big enough to pull down to cover your eyes, too.

Airplanes can often be freezing… unless they are way too hot. The problem is, you never know which temperature extreme your plane might suffer from until you are on it, so it’s best to dress in layers so that you’re prepared for anything. Always bring a jacket in the summer and wear a t-shirt under your sweater in the winter.

Hot Tip: If you bring a jacket but don’t need it on the plane, you can roll it up and use it as extra lumbar support.

If you’re wearing sandals on your travel day, bring a pair of socks to wear on the plane. Your feet will stay warm and your seatmate will appreciate not being up close and personal with your bare feet.

If your feet and legs have a tendency to swell, consider bringing compression socks onboard to wear during your flight. They will help reduce fluid retention and swelling, and may even reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT).

Post-flight Airport Hacks

The travel hacks don’t stop when your flight lands. Use these tips to travel like a pro.

Many bags can look the same, so it’s smart to use a unique luggage tag or tie a brightly colored ribbon around your checked bags to make them easily identifiable in the baggage carousel. Alternatively, you can buy luggage in a variety of colors and patterns that are easy to pick out of a crowd.

woman with red suitcase

Did you know that some airlines offer bonus points if your bags are late ?

Delta Air Lines offers the “Bags On Time” guarantee. If your bags take more than 20 minutes to reach the baggage carousel after any domestic flight, you’re eligible for 2,500 bonus miles by completing this form .

Alaska Airlines offers a $25 discount code for future travel or 2,500 bonus miles when your bags take more than 20 minutes to reach the baggage carousel. To make a claim , you need to visit the Alaska Airlines baggage desk at the airport within 2 hours of your flight’s arrival.

If you travel internationally even just once or twice a year, Global Entry can save you tons of time. This program allows members to speed through customs upon re-entry back into the U.S. Instead of waiting in the long customs lines, Global Entry members scan their passports and enter customs information at a kiosk before heading to baggage claim.

Bottom Line: Global Entry is a great program that will help you speed through the airport after international flights. It costs $100 to apply and the membership lasts 5 years. The great news is that many travel rewards credit cards come with a credit for the Global Entry application fee .

If you’ll be taking a rideshare service like Uber or Lyft from the airport, make sure you download the app before you need to use it. It will be easier and quicker to get a ride if your account is already set up, and you’ll have time to see if any of your credit cards offer discounts or bonus points . Be sure to add your credit card to your account and activate any bonus offers, if needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best airplane hacks for sleeping.

If you want to sleep on your next flight, here are a few hacks that can help you out:

  • Book a window seat so you can lean on the side of the plane
  • Pack a neck pillow
  • Bring earplugs and a sleeping mask to block out light and sound
  • To stay warm, bring a jacket or large scarf that can be used as a blanket; wearing a hooded sweatshirt or jacket can also help cover your ears and eyes and keep you warm so you can catch some shut-eye

What are the best airplane hacks for toddlers?

If you’re traveling with a toddler, be sure to bring plenty of snacks and things to keep them entertained. A new toy is a great way to keep them occupied as are gel window clings if they’re sitting in the window seat. If all else fails, bring a tablet and kid-friendly headphones to keep them entertained and quiet for the trip.

What are the best airplane hacks for comfort?

There are a few things you can do to make your next airplane flight more comfortable. Wear comfortable clothes in layers so you can adjust based on the temperature of the plane. To help ease back pain, you can use a rolled-up jacket or scarf for extra lumbar support. If you’re wearing sandals, bring socks to keep your feet warm, and consider compression socks for long flights to help reduce swelling.

What are the best airplane hacks for long flights?

To make a long flight more comfortable, try these hacks on your next trip:

  • Wear comfortable clothes that you can sleep in
  • Dress in layers so you never get too cold or too hot
  • Wear compression socks to help reduce swelling
  • Brush your teeth before you go to sleep and once you wake up (but be sure to use bottled water)
  • Download plenty of entertainment before the flight and bring a portable charger so your devices don’t run out of batteries
  • Use airline miles to book a business or first class flight

What are the best packing hacks for flying?

To pack like a pro, you’ll want to follow these simple tips. Keep your luggage organized by using packing cubes. If you’re packing more than 1 person in a single suitcase, get a different color of packing cube for each person to keep everything separated. Use a toiletry bag or a simple Ziploc bag to pack your bathroom essentials. If your products leak, the spill will be confined to the small bag and won’t get all over your clothes. If you’re checking suitcases for vacation, always pack what you’ll need for the first day in your carry-on so you can start your vacation right away, even if your bags are late.

How to Travel in Style and Comfort: 3 Things to Know

How to Travel in Style and Comfort: 3 Things to Know

Have you ever met a friend or family member at the airport, expecting them immediately to launch into a description of their fantastic holiday? And all they can talk about is how uncomfortable their flight was? Worse – are you this traveler?

Traveling in comfort comes from three sources I think: money, planning, and mindset . This applies whether you are undertaking a long-haul or international flight, a bus tour or even a trip in your family car.

How do you rack up on these elements? Perhaps you have some special tricks of your own?

TRAVEL COMFORT GUARANTEE #1: MONEY

western Woman begging for money in vietnam doing yoga

But no matter how much you spend, if you plan poorly or have a bad attitude there’s no guarantee that your travels will be fun.

Some people can’t afford to or choose not to, spend exorbitant amounts on travel. How do they make sure that their trips and travels are comfortable?

How to have an Amazing Trip on Small Budgets

TRAVEL COMFORT GUARANTEE #2: PLANNING

Thinking ahead can make all the difference. Here are some tips to add comfort to your travels:

Choosing your flight

The distances between City A and City B may remain the same, but the time taken to get there can be very different. For example, you can travel from Dallas/Fort Worth to Sydney, Australia in less than 17 hours – this is the longest non-stop flight in the world now. Or it can take more than 50 hours, depending on stopovers along the way.

If you are going to have long stopovers, research the transit airports. In some, you can get a day pass into the nearest city for shopping and sightseeing. Or there are facilities for you to have a shower while you wait.

Ultimate Guide to Layover Flights

Pack a good book or download an e-book so that you are not bored while you wait. If you like window shopping, browsing the duty-free sections can be fantastic. Or try some of the local cuisines in the airport restaurants.

Fretting and complaining won’t shorten the time, but it will make you miserable – and certainly irritate your fellow travelers.

Choosing your seat

Boy pointing to space without window in a flight

Know that 60% of travelers ask for window seats, so you might have to book this online in advance and you may have to pay extra for it. If you want to stretch your legs or want to get up often, then the aisle seat is for you.

Booking Cheap Flights Secrets

There might be better legroom (“pitch” is the fancy airline term for this) next to emergency exits and in the front, but you will have to forego having bags under your seat and there is often no seat pocket in front of you to stash some of your goods. For international flights, some of these rows also don’t have individual TVs.

Some airlines have certain rows with up the 5 inches more “pitch”. If you are very tall, it may be worth paying extra to get a seat in one of these rows.

Seats to Avoid

Try to avoid seats that are against the bulkhead as you will not be able to recline the seat. This is true for bus travel too. We so often fight like children to sit in the back row, and then find that we will have to be upright all the way.

Leg rest space for a tall man in a plane

Dressing for comfort

Gone are the days when travel was an excuse for showing off how fashionable you were! Today, you can look good but also be comfortable. Wearing layers lets you adjust easily to changes in weather at places of departure and destination and along the way.

Choose trousers for travel with elasticized tops and some stretch in the material . Big and loose is much more comfortable than tight! This is true for children too. Sometimes letting them travel in pajamas is the best bet.

Fabric choice is important. You might be surprised by the new fabrics that are all comfortable for traveling .

Packing correctly

Dog sitting on a peron in a plane

Wear as much of your carry-on luggage as you can. You can take off your lightweight jacket or waterproof travel boots once you’re in your seat. Or your warm scarf can become your travel blanket . I saw a jacket that rolled up into its own collar and became a neck pillow!

Please remember to check the airline rules about what you can carry on board with you. There are rules about medication , liquids , and other prohibited items on flights .

Planning for Jet Lag and Flight Sickness

Jet lag trouble every traveler but jetlag can be dealt with easily .

On the other hand, if you suffer from motion sickness, you can try 3 steps scientifically proven ways to prevent air-sickness .

Air Travel Comfort Items and Accessories

Here are some items to carry with you:

Travel pillow

This may be the number 1 must-have. Travel pillows come in all shapes, sizes, and colors . Their priority is keeping your head upright and your neck stable.

One of the main reasons for travel discomfort is sleeping at the wrong angle and waking up with a stiff and sore neck and head.

We tend to think of neck pillows only for flying, but they are just as important for road travel. Children will also be much less cranky if they sleep more comfortably, and there are lots of fun versions for kiddies.

Best Inflatable Travel Pillows for Flights

Avoid arguments about whether it’s too hot or too cold by supplying everyone with a light blanket. Select one that has good wicking properties so you won’t feel sweaty. Perhaps wear a Peshtemal that can be used as a blanket.

Best Travel Blanket

Good earphones or earplugs and an eye mask

Shut out the noise, light, and distraction around you. You can shut down completely. Or you can listen to your own music or the in-flight music and movies with no crackle. Masks can push against your eyelids. Choose one that sits away from your eyes slightly and has built-in eye cavities.

Our choice for Travel Earphones

Inflatable footrest

Inflatable footrest for planes

Having your feet raised slightly is good for circulation and prevents swelling in your feet and legs.

Laptop stand

This is a clever idea if you plan to do some work or catch up with your Facebook contacts on your trip. The tray table is just at the wrong level and angle to allow you to work comfortably – and this is much worse if the passenger in front of you reclines the seat! A laptop stand lifts the screen a few inches and can be packed easily into the laptop bag.

Best Selling Portable Laptop Stand

Face spritz

Skin can react badly to the air-conditioned conditions in planes, buses, and cars. A facial mist removes dust and provides much-needed moisturizer.

Travel Size Face Spray

If you want to step off the longest flight looking bright-eyed and cheerful, pack some eye lubricant drops. As an additional luxury, you can add a few eye pads – I’ve tried some infused with cucumber extract. The trick is to cover your eyes for the last fifteen minutes of the trip. So, pack up your goods a bit earlier, then sit back and relax as everyone around you starts scrambling.

TRAVEL COMFORT GUARANTEE #3: MINDSET

Dog and kid fighting over window seat

I sometimes wonder about this. If you want to have home comforts 24/7, the best place to get them is at home. If you want to experience the rest of the world, perhaps there are some compromises to make?

Maybe we’ve been too influenced by sayings such as, “ The journey matters as much as the destination .” While this may be true for life, for short journeys we may sometimes decide to put up with some things we don’t like.

Alternatively, we may decide that the journey is part of the whole experience, and decide to make it a pleasant one.

The reality is that you are likely to experience some discomfort along the way.

Travel Discomforts?

  • Your flight may be delayed because of the weather, or because someone’s bag is lost.
  • You may be sitting next to someone who smells, talks too much or encroaches on your space.
  • The cabin temperature may be too hot or too cold. The cabin crew may not respond to your requests within seconds. You may hate the food. So what? That’s life . It’s up to you to decide whether any of this will ruin your trip!

If you have planned for comfort as much as you can, and your expectation is that, on balance, things will be good rather bad, you may be surprised by how comfortable your travel experience turns out to be.

So, how you arrive at your destination is pretty much up to you. You can be full of complaints, or you can be the traveler who is enthusiastic and ready to talk about all the awesome things you have seen and done!

Happy travels. Please share your tips for comfortable travel.

What is Delta Comfort Plus?

How to book delta comfort plus, change and cancellation policy for delta comfort plus, delta comfort plus vs. economy (main cabin), delta premium select vs. comfort plus, is delta comfort plus worth it.

The biggest advantage of Delta Comfort Plus seats is more legroom.

Passengers also get a premium snack and drink in Comfort Plus.

Checked bags are not free on domestic flights, similar to main cabin tickets.

Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines is the second-largest airline in the world by number of flights. From basic economy to domestic first class and international business class (called Delta One ), the airline offers many flying experiences to suit all kinds of travelers.

Whether flying domestically or across the ocean to a farther destination, you might want to do it in comfort. You may prefer something a little better than economy but less fancy than business class, especially on long-haul flights. Delta’s Comfort Plus, which is the airline’s economy class with some extra perks (not to be confused with its premium economy cabin called Premium Select) might be just what you're looking for.

Here’s an overview of what you get when flying domestically and internationally in Delta Comfort Plus, including baggage allowance, seat pitch and in-flight service.

Delta Comfort Plus is a step above main cabin, the airline’s name for economy class. When you fly Delta Comfort Plus, expect to see the following benefits on your flight.

Delta Comfort Plus perks

Bag allowance: Unless you have Medallion status , a Delta co-branded credit card or active military status, there’s no free checked bag allowance on domestic Delta Comfort Plus. You have to pay $30 for the first checked piece of luggage. But passengers flying on international flights can check one piece of luggage weighing up to 50 pounds (23 kilograms) at no cost.

Boarding: Delta Comfort Plus passengers receive an early boarding call before SkyPriority members and have dedicated overhead bin space, which can sometimes be tough to come by in economy.

Premium food: Starbucks coffee, beer and wine (offered to flyers over 21) are provided on flights of at least 251 miles, and complimentary liquor is available on flights of at least 500 miles. Premium snacks are served on flights of 900 miles or longer when there is no meal service.

Seats: Delta Comfort Plus seats offer about 34 inches of seat pitch. That means if you measure the distance between any point on one seat and the same point on a seat directly in front of or behind it, there will be 34 inches in between. That's several inches more than a standard economy seat.

Onboard amenities: You will receive a pillow, a blanket, earbuds and an amenity kit if you fly on a long-distance international flight.

It's important to understand that Comfort Plus seats are in the economy cabin. Although you receive more legroom and extra perks, it's in a different cabin than premium economy. Premium Select is the name of Delta’s premium economy, which is its own cabin in front of the economy cabin. It offers larger seats with a footrest, accelerated check-in, security and baggage handling, enhanced onboard amenities and meal service.

fly comfort travel

Whether you’re redeeming Delta SkyMiles or paying cash, you can book Delta Comfort Plus tickets directly on the airline’s website.

On Delta’s homepage , select your departure and destination cities, dates of travel and the number of passengers. When the search results pop up on the next page, each class of service is clearly marked: basic, main, Comfort Plus and first.

fly comfort travel

On select international routes, you’ll see the Premium Select cabin in addition to Comfort Plus, which is an even more expensive fare type with additional perks.

» Learn more: Basic economy vs. main cabin

The Delta Comfort Plus change fee and cancellation policy depends on your origin. Tickets for domestic and international travel originating in the U.S., Canada, Europe, India, Africa and the Caribbean are eligible for free changes and cancellations.

Although you won’t receive a direct refund, you will receive an eCredit in the original amount valid toward any Delta flight purchased by Dec. 31, 2023, for travel through the end of 2024.

So is Delta Comfort Plus that much better than a standard economy ticket? Take a look at some of the differences.

When comparing Comfort Plus seats with main cabin, you typically get an extra 2 to 3 inches of room in Delta Comfort Plus. Delta’s economy class seats have 31 to 32 inches of pitch (varies by aircraft), and Comfort Plus seats measure at about 34 inches.

As mentioned above, Comfort Plus passengers receive a premium snack selection and complimentary alcoholic beverages on select domestic flights. Main cabin passengers get a smaller snack selection and have to pay for premium drinks.

As for checked luggage, travelers in both classes of service will have to pay for bags, with exceptions for elite status, certain credit card holders and military.

» Learn more: Delta Comfort Plus vs. main cabin

To truly experience premium economy on Delta, consider Premium Select. Depending on the aircraft, Delta Premium Select seats feature a pitch length of 37 to 38 inches, a width of 18.5 to 21 inches and an adjustable footrest, leg rest and headrest.

Compared to 34 inches in Comfort Plus, it’s an upgrade. Additionally, Premium Select seats can feature a recline of up to 7 inches. Some aircraft, such as Airbus A350 and Boeing 757-200 (75H), have been decked out with Delta Premium Select seats on select international routes.

On the Airbus A350, Premium Select is located between Delta One and the main cabin. On the Boeing 757-200, it’s the best seat on the plane at the front of the cabin. Some international flights, such as those operated by Airbus A330-900neo, feature both Delta Premium Select and Delta Comfort Plus seats.

fly comfort travel

On Premium Select seats, passengers can watch movies on a seatback screen up to 13.3 inches and charge their devices using an in-seat power outlet.

On the ground, Premium Select passengers experience SkyPriority benefits, such as a priority check-in lane, expedited baggage delivery and premium boarding. Two free checked bags are also included on international flights, one more than those flying Comfort Plus.

» Learn more: How to get free upgrades on flights

Comfort Plus is more expensive than a standard economy ticket, so you have to decide whether the upcharge is worth having more legroom, access to complimentary premium beverages and a designated overhead compartment. Especially if you're flying domestically, the extra cost for a short flight may not be worth it.

If you’d like a true premium economy experience, you’ll want to upgrade from Comfort Plus to Premium Select. This cabin can be found on select international routes to Europe or Asia, and it offers even more comforts such as a reclining seat with a footrest, a large entertainment screen and an amenity kit.

Flying with pets? Here's what to know.

By Anne Marie Lee

Edited By Alain Sherter

Updated on: April 6, 2024 / 10:08 AM EDT / CBS News

Thinking of taking your dog or cat with you the next time you fly? For a growing percentage of the 90.5 million pet owners in the U.S., the answer is yes. But while the notion of boarding a plane with your pet may seem simple, the rules and restrictions around traveling with an animal can be confusing.

Eight major U.S. airlines allow pets to fly in-cabin as carry-ons. But flying with your pet takes research and planning, as pet policies vary from airline to airline, are steeped in restrictions, and are limited to specific countries and cities. You'll also have to pay an extra fee for your pet ranging from $95 to $200, depending on the airline and where you're flying. And restrictions often change.

For example, American Airlines  recently revised its policies  so passengers flying with pets may also bring one full-size carry-on or personal item. But the carrier prohibits carry-on pets on transatlantic and transpacific flights. Here's what you need to know when considering taking your fur baby with you on a plane.

Cargo, check-in or carry-on?

Most airlines offer three options for transporting animals: cargo, check-in or carry-on. But if your pet is larger than a bread box, your options are limited to the cargo or baggage check-in options, with very few exceptions.

Given that large canine breeds such as Labrador Retrievers, German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers are among the most popular dogs in the country, the size restriction for in-cabin pet travel can be a major frustration for those who would rather not fly at all if that means putting their pet in cargo.

A 2023 Forbes Adviser survey of 10,000 U.S. dog owners found that 33% of respondents fly with their pets, while 37% listed not being able to bring their dog on a plane as their biggest annoyance. (You can learn more about the differences between cargo, check-in and carry-on options  here , including warnings about the  dangers  involved when pets travel in the cargo hold.)

Carry-on pets

Even for pet owners whose animals are small enough to fly as a carry-on, traveling is no breeze.

"When I fly with him I have to go to the desk," Margaret Rauch, 44, told CBS MoneyWatch, referring to her 15-pound poodle mix, Soda. The New York City resident has taken Soda on dozens of flights to St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where Soda, now 4, was being fostered by a friend after being found as a stray puppy in 2021.

In addition to calling the airline in advance to register her dog for a flight, Rauch has to check in at the counter whenever she's traveling with Soda, so the airline agent can confirm her dog and pet carrier conform to the in-cabin pet requirements and that the flight hasn't already met its pet maximum.

image000000-1.jpg

Rauch, who said she would never consider putting Soda in cargo, applauded American Airlines' new policy, while noting that in her experience the one carry-on rule was rarely enforced.

"I feel the price is already high for what I get. Even with AA's rule change, I lose the underseat space," she said. "My dog creates no extra work for anyone."

Despite the added preparation, paperwork and hassle involved in flying with Soda — not to mention the unfriendly looks she occasionally detects from fellow passengers at the sight of her pet carrier — Rauch said, "It's absolutely worth it."

Asked how the experience could be improved, she pointed to early boarding for pet owners as something that would help.

"If you can get in early, get a seat and settle down, that is an accommodation I don't expect to see anytime soon but I think it makes sense," Rauch said.

Safety and comfort

For the many Americans who see their pets practically as family members, one of the most challenging aspects of flying is ensuring their animal's comfort and safety.

"The increasing humanization of pets, which involves treating them as part of the family rather than as mere animals, has increased the demand for pet travel services that are of high quality and can be customized to meet the specific needs of each pet," LinkedIn reported in December.

Among other tips, the U.S. Department of Transportation  and animal experts recommend that you not feed your pet four to six hours before a flight and limit their water intake. Others also suggest keeping bottled water on hand at all times. Additionally, most airlines require certain vaccination and vet certification that your pet is healthy enough to fly. Individual countries also have their own requirements for pets to enter.

Not surprisingly, some airlines do better than others at handling pets. One of the best-rated carriers for pet travel is Alaska Airlines, which has repeatedly topped rankings, such as NerdWallet's Most pet-friendly airlines of 2024.  In recent years, the airline also has maintained one of the industry's lowest incident ratings, according to Veterinarians.org. United Airlines and Delta are among the airlines with the highest incident rates, according to the pet information website.

On Rauch's first plane trip with Soda traveling home to New York, a layover in Miami led to the flight sitting on the tarmac for two hours. Calming treats are something that helps keeps her dog relaxed on flights. She also withholds Soda's food and limits his water intake up to five hours before a flight, which is also helpful given that he doesn't like using pet relief areas, which she said generally smell of urine and can be overwhelming for dogs. Flights between New York City and St. Croix are generally under six hours.

"I'm not sure how I'd handle a flight to Singapore," Rauch said.

Here's a rundown of U.S. airlines' pet travel policies, along with fees and and restrictions:

Can someone recommend or list which airlines fly this route? I have found Aeroflot and Transaero. I would like to know if these are quality airlines in terms of being on time, not cancelling flights and comfort and what other LCC or full price options are available.

Also, timing in terms of booking to obtain best prices. A couple I looked at has ridiculously high prices so obviously too early to book yet.

Thanks in advance.

You need to use kayak or Skyscanner to check connections.

Turkish are a very good airline by reputation if you want to fly via Istanbul. They also have fairly decent one way fares. Air baltic via Kiev are about the cheapest budget carrier I can see.

Just bumping this in case anyone has anything to add.

Please note there are 3 international airports in Moscow, and two in Paris so make sure you know which ones you are flying to/from !

Aeroflot have a good modern fleet of aircraft and I found the level of service to be on a par with any other major European airline .

Transaero have older aircraft leased or bought from other airlines although I think they maybe planning on getting newer aircraft, in Moscow I was delayed for around an hour when they had to replace a faulty aircraft. Service I would describe as OK, but the meals could be better.

Both airlines have good records as far as keeping flights going on time, safety wise nothing to worry about, Transaero have never lost an aircraft yet and Aeroflot have seen much improvement since the days of the USSR.

I think in terms of price its going to be difficult to get cheap flights in July, I got a pretty good deal with Air France earlier this year booked via Ebookers, most people here disapprove of 3rd party sites. BHX to CDG was operated by Air France, CDG to SVO was then a code share via Aeroflot and then SVO to PEE again with Aeroflot. The trip only cost £321 including return flights , flights from Moscow to Perm usually cost me around £220 alone.

It might be an idea to post your question in the Moscow forum, where you’re more likely to find people who have flown this route and of any other airlines that may offer this…..slightly surprised S7 don’t.

We did the trip in the other direction, Paris to Moscow and finished up making the booking with Expedia.

We made the booking in November for our flight the following May.

We flew with Lufthansa with a change in Frankfurt. It was just a jump off one plane and hop on another.

Our prices included a flight from St Petersburg to Copenhagen to pick up our Singapore flight home, but my records don`t show the breakup.

The whole thing cost $544 AUD plus $427 taxes and fees for the two of us. I felt this was a reasonable price for the carriers and even came with FF points.

We left at 11am and got into Moscow at 6.30 so it was pretty much a day down the drain.

Could be something to do with Aeroflot and Air France being both Sky Team members, might be worth trying to find out whether Air France have some kind of New Year sale like other airlines .

Aigle Azur have a good reputation. Also Orly is by far the better Paris airport for getting to the centre quickly.

Thanks everyone. Yes, have flown into both Orly and CGD and Orly is so much better!

I'm leaning toward Tranaero for both price and timing reasons.

Distance between Tokyo and Moscow

Flying non-stop from tokyo to moscow.

How far is Moscow from Tokyo? Here's the quick answer if you have a private jet and you can fly in the fastest possible straight line.

Flight distance: 4,661 miles or 7501 km

Flight time: 9 hours, 49 minutes

Because of the curvature of the Earth, the shortest distance is actually the "great circle" distance, or "as the crow flies" which is calculated using an iterative Vincenty formula. For a long distance, this appears as a curve on the map, and this is often the route that commercial airlines will take so it's a good estimate of the frequent flyer miles you'll accumulate as well.

This is a fairly long flight, so unless you have a Gulfstream G650 or your own Boeing or Airbus, you might be booking a commercial flight. In that case, your travel time would really need to include how many minutes to get to your local airport, wait for security, board and taxi on the runway, land at the other airport, and get to your destination. Scroll down to see a more realistic calculation that takes into account all these factors to get a more accurate estimate of your actual flight time .

Tokyo to Moscow airports and flights

In the quick calculation above, we assumed you had a private plane and just wanted to know the time in the air from city to city. But for most of us, we're going to be flying on a commercial airline (whether it's first class or coach). So that means we really need to account for all the extra travel time getting to the airport, waiting for our flight, and making it to the destination.

To give you a better estimate of real-life travel, we've put together a flight itinerary with actual airports. Eventually you'll be able to customize this plan, choosing your own airports and flights. But for now, here's an example we've selected to give you an idea of how traveling might work between airports.

Departure airport: Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND)

Arrival airport: Sheremetyevo International Airport (SVO)

With the airports selected, we can estimate the travel time to and from the airport, based on how far the airport is from downtown.

Getting to the airport: 28 minutes

Getting to your destination: 51 minutes

Now finally, let's look at an actual flight from HND to SVO and figure out how long it would take to fly including take-off and landing, and time to taxi on the runway.

Commercial flight time: 9 hours, 49 minutes

So now we can finally get an idea of the total travel time from Tokyo to Moscow including time spent getting to/from the airports, an estimated wait time of 2 hours at the airport for TSA security lines and waiting at the gate, and the actual flight itself.

Total travel time: 13 hours

Plan a trip to Moscow

How far is it the other way?

The distance is the same either way if you're flying a straight line. But for a real trip, there can be plenty of differences so go ahead and check the reverse directions to get the distance from Moscow to Tokyo , or go to the main page to calculate the distance between cities .
