A quick tip for people who want to drive into McleodGanj using their own car (without a driver), make sure you confirm that your hotel as parking space. Thankfully Deodar Villa has an arrangement with the temple management for using their parking space which is complimentary for it guests. its located very a stones-throw distance from the HH Dalai lama temple and very close to the main market. The local taxi stand is also within shouting distance. Though driving in McLeodganj is not recommended, ever spot is walkable/trekable.

Restaurant is on the top floor offering great views. The breakfast is limited but well cooked and recommended. The hotel has no lift, so ask for a low floor then you only have to worry about climbing the stairs for breakfast. The only downside to this hotel is the 2 hotels opposite. Young Indians partying every night with loud music. It goes quiet after 11pm though. So if you go to bed early bring earplugs. Not this hotels fault but worth knowing.

Surya is a very well located hotel with good rooms maintained well by excellent cleaning staff who are in and out before you know it. The main fault of this hotel is lack of wifi and it appears that this has been an issue for some time and one that is unlikely to be resolved in the near future. For an international standard hotel this is sadly lacking. We found ourselves having to go to nearby cafés and restaurants to eat in order to use their wifi. This means income that Surya has missed out on. I'm sure that we were not the only guests doing this.

Courteous staff, right from the Manager to the room service guys. Stunning views of Dhauladhar range and Triund peak from the terrace rooms will make one spend more relaxing time at the hotel. One of the best hotel at Naddi with such amazing mountain views. Food was also good and served nicely. Rooms with tea makers, wider windows, geysers in the bathroom etc will make the stay comfortable. The location is very near to the sunset point and Yoga centre. Overall if someone wants to relax and enjoy the stay away from the crowded Mcleodgunj, then this is the right place.

We had booked a ‘Premier Room’ for 3 of us for 3 nights in this hotel but received a Standard Room on the 3rd Basement Floor. There was no lift in the hotel. The Hotel was supposed to provide an extra bed, which actually was a mattress with a filthy bed sheet, a oil-soaked pillow & a filthy blanket. After admitting the third bed – the look of the room became worse than that of a 3rd Class Waiting Room of a Railway Station. We found mosquitoes, various insects & above everything a medium sized hairy spider inside the room. The toilet was filthy & stinking - providing lukewarm water even after leaving the geyser on for a considerable time. The commode flush handle was so miserably dirty that we had to put a tissue paper around it - before using. Staff lacked of education & standard to converse with & at least one of them was found drunk. I will never recommend this hotel to anyone.

Located in a forest out of Dharamshala if you need to trek into town / Mccleod if you need to see the sights. WiFi only in the lobby and the restaurant is still being built (coming soon apparently), so food is in your room or in the lobby. It was pretty good and the staff, even without much English, are always friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the isolation and the surroundings. Really comfy beds

I spent four nights in Green Hotel and had a very good time there. The restaurant close to reception has a large space inside and outside (great terrace with view), it is a very pleasant area where to relax and meet some other travelers. Rooms are quite large with private bathroom. They can be different depending on prices, if you wish the best ask for a room with a view on the valley. Maybe you will be asked some hundreds Rs more (which in euro make a very reasonable amount of money) but sun and view will make the difference. What maked the difference in my staying, being on a journey by myself, was the kindness and friendliness of the Tibetan woman at reception, Dikki (I hope I write her name correctly). She was so good to me and , from what I understood, she always very helpful with guests. Also other people in the restaurant and reception are very nice, so that you will find a very good atmosphere. I absolutely recommend Green Hotel!

The hotel is situated in steep so the hotel has a car to drop you till market or bus stand however there car is always on maintenance and they will also not be able to provide you a taxi and in this location no taxi driver comes so all you need to do is when you check out then you need to carry your luggage and walk for around 20mins that too in a difficult road. Apart from this the staff is friendly and food is good, location is not that good.

It was amazing stay despite some rainy weather. The place is just in 7min walking distance from the Dalai Lama temple which has amazing walking trail around. McLeod Ganj is a very picturesque place and the hotel location is good. Rooms are very clean, wifi worked without problem, there is also cafe on the rooftops which are very nice to sit at. Staff is helpful and can advise where to go and help with whatever questions you have. It is one of the budget places to stay and definitely worth the money you spend. When i am back to Dharamshala, i will definitely choose it again for my stay.

We stayed for 5 nights at Villa Paradiso and 2 nights at Norling House in Norbulingka Institute and Chonor House in Mcleodganj. After exploring Mcleodganj in detail, (every possible Lane), we realised that Villa Paradiso has the best location of the Dhauladhar ranges and is also super convenient to the main square. (Roughly 500mtrs to Dalai Lama Temple. The best room in the hotel for us was 207, which is superior room with best balcony (huge) facing the Dhauladhar snow peaks. Truly made a huge difference to our experience. The staff is excellent and truly genuine. Food wasn’t that great, but couldn’t complain as they seemed really courteous and diligent to prepare us meals. Would highly recommend this!! Awaiting to return to room 207!

Zostel is located in upper Dharamkot, which is kind of “at the top of the mountain.” Bhagsu is in the middle and McLeod Ganj is at the bottom. I LOVED being a little more up, up, and away from the city streets and loved the isolation and gorgeous views. Hiking down to Dharamkot takes only 10 minutes, Bhagsu takes 15ish, and McLeod Gan depends on your speed but more like 30-40 minutes. I loved being so close to the best hiking trails in the area, and a little more removed from the hustle and bustle. The rooms are very comfortable, the water is HOT, and the wifi is the best in Dharmakot area. It’s a great place! Plus the staff are very kind, accommodating, and reliable. What a great place to stay!

Krishna Niwas is kind of hard to locate, if this is your first Dharamsala tour. I would suggest not going at night. The place is situated in Dharamkot, which is sort of a rural area but stunningly beautiful. The view is awesome and worth every penny. The staff is friendly. Note- You can reach Krishna Niwas by descending a set of stairs to the right of 'Trek and Dine', Dharamkot.

Hotel locates bit after Mc Leod Ganj but it woth it. You will enjoyed for the pleasant stay in this hotel and discover an incredible view in the morning from the bad through the window. We (two couples) stayed at Moonwalk during 15th-18th June. I will break down my review on the following: 1. Check-in - I requested early check-in (through phone call and email) as we expected to arrive early - we're driving from Delhi (9 hours drive). I also requested valley view (backside) rooms. They promised the rooms on call (no reply on email). We reached hotel very early at 9:30 AM - they couldn't allow us early check-in as rooms were not empty - so we went to a nearby cafe for breakfast - slept on lobby sofas for sometime and checked-in at 12 noon. Also, they could not provide us valley view rooms. 2. Room and Stay - We booked two premium rooms (costliest among all options) - rooms were clean and spacious. However, the balcony of premium rooms is of no use - 1st room's balcony opened on the front side of hotel with view of muddy parking lot and 2nd room's balcony had slight valley view but did not have space for 2-4 people to sit. 3. Facilities - There is not much you can ask at a place like McLeodganj. However, there were few distinguishing facilities - space for car parking, an open common sitting space/restaurant on our floor with beautiful view of surroundings. 4. Service - Good Service. We ordered food/tea several times and hotel staff was quick to respond. They used to ask us about our dinner plans and room cleaning daily. Other small requests were also catered quickly. 5. Check-out - Hotel gate closes around 10pm. However, they helped us check-out midnight at 12. Billing and final settlement was very smooth.

Pros Prime location - Market is just behind the hotel. Almost all the attractions are nearby like dalai lama temple is at walking distance. Bhagsunath waterfall Dal lake n naddi. They r also not that far. Service- As we were travelling with an year old kid. They provide us with the food that we want for the baby. Staff - Cooperative staff. Food- Nice food. Not spicy just the way we wanted. Cons Cleanliness - It can be a little more clean. All in all a good and happy stay. Would love to visit again in future. Thanks Regards

I’ve had the best time at King castle. Location is super convenient (3’ walking distance from Dalai lama temple, main road and market). Dorms are big and clen, beds are extremly comfy (slept like a baby), and they’ve got a restaurant upstairs. I did some work in the lobby where there are these comfy coaches and had the best time with the stuff in reception. I’m very greatful to Narender, who sorted out my accomodation in a very short notice. I’d recommend everyone to stay here during your time in Mcleodganj. Thanks again! I’ll come back for sure!

The rooms are excellent. Especially the view from rooms and balcony are overwhelming. The stuff are very cooperative. Although the check-in time is 1pm, we reached there at 6am and they provide us a room without any cost. Fully complementary. The food quality is great and price is reasonable. On request they prepared dishes for my child which is not there in there menu list. The staff are really cooperative in all sense. The only problem I faced is with my mother. She is old and she can't use the stairs. The hotel don't have lift facility. But the owner tried his best to accommodate us in the rooms nearer to the ground level. As a whole, the stay was worth and value for money. I'll recommend everyone to opt the property.

We booked into the suite which was pricey but very large and comfortable. The views from the balcony were incredible. The hotel is very centrally located in the main square with great restaurants nearby and a short walk from the major attractions such as Tsuglagkhang Complex and Bhagsu. The tour agency opposite (Galaxy Line) is run by two of the nicest guys in India (Sunny and Ravi) and arranged great tours both by road and the trek to Triund Hill.

The view from the rooms was outstanding, snow capped mountains can be seen from most of the rooms. Services such as Tea/ coffee maker, mini bar, ironing facilities all this was mentioned on the website however these facilities were not available at the rooms & even the hotel claims that they do not offer such facilities. The perfect place to eat at Naddi village was a newly opened hotel run by ex Taj hotel employees by the name of Bobs & Barley. This place offers amazing food & there service are out of the world, they also claim to serve the best coffee in town. Sandwiches, coffee, thin crust pizza, Indian curries are a must try. If you are looking for outstanding services this the place to be. Bobs & barley is highly recommended & it is also quite reasonable. You can get in touch with them at [email protected]

Really lovely. We arrived in the early hours of the morning, exhausted after an horrific bus ride from Shimla and eight hours before check-in, but the young night manager put us into a suite and told us we could sleep until midday, at no cost! This set the tone for our stay in Dharamsala. Mistywoods has a perfect location at the top of the main road and is conveniently placed for visiting sites and a great variety of restaurants. The rooms are elaborately decorated, the more deluxe have balconies, with spectacular views, well wworth the extra rupees. Highly recommended

We are old as such we were restricted with our movement due to hilly location. Otherwise it is enjoyable.

Short trip will be ok, depending waht you want. Car/taxi is very expensive so is the food.

The real attraction is McLeodganj (8kms from Dharamshala), to see the Tibetan government / people in exile and get a whiff of their culture and traditions.

Are Disposable Hotel Slippers the Next Plastic Straws?

Slippers supplied by hotels — flimsy models usually made of plastic and fabric — are the next single-use item in the cross hairs of sustainability activists.

In November, managers at the Arenas del Mar resort near Manuel Antonio National Park in Costa Rica, challenged employees to come up with ways to operate more sustainably. The maintenance crew suggested electric locks on guest room doors. The food and beverage department proposed making jams from fruit peels. And the housekeepers advised: Ditch the slippers.

“It didn’t make sense because you use them once and throw them out,” said Hans Pfister, the president and co-founder of Cayuga Collection , the hotel group that manages the resort, which took housekeeping’s advice. “It’s very wasteful.”

Like plastic straws and mini bottles of shampoo, disposable slippers — flimsy models usually made of plastic and fabric, and often found bedside at turndown or bagged in hotel closets — are the next single-use item in the cross hairs of sustainability activists.

“Anything single-use is problematic,” wrote Willy Legrand, a sustainable hospitality expert and a professor at the IU International University of Applied Sciences in Bad Honnef, Germany, in an email. He cited the large footprint of a small slipper once you factor in production, shipping and waste. Single-use slippers, he said, “feel out of place and out of touch.”

Nina Boys, the vice president of sustainability for Beyond Green , a group of hotels vetted for their sustainability practices, called slippers “low-hanging fruit” in the fight against plastic.

Slippers as status symbols

While plastic straws can be easily replaced with paper versions and small shampoo bottles by larger dispensers, subbing for slippers is more complicated based not just on materials but cultural expectations and perceptions of luxury.

Providing slippers in hotels is rooted in the Asian tradition of removing your shoes indoors, said Diana Verde Nieto, a sustainability expert and the author of “ Reimagining Luxury .”

“As hotels started to cater to international guests, particularly those from Asia, the provision of slippers became a way to accommodate and respect these cultural norms,” Ms. Verde Nieto wrote in an email. She added that the comfort and hygiene associated with slippers has become a universal luxury standard today.

Offering slippers also helps hotels earn status ratings from travel organizations like AAA or the European Union’s Hotelstars .

Some resorts have found it easier to address sustainability through food waste and community engagement than footwear. Winvian , the boutique resort with 18 cottages and one suite on 113 acres in Connecticut’s Litchfield Hills, grows about 70 percent of its produce on the property and built a cottage from the wood cleared at the site. Guests receive reusable sandals in the spa, but in the rooms, visitors will find plusher designs that they are encouraged to take home and reuse; about half do and the rest are discarded.

“The problem is, it’s one of those things that people have come to expect,” said Heather Smith Winkelmann, the managing director of the resort.

Ivan Bauza is the director of sales and marketing at the Setai , a luxury hotel in Miami Beach. “Our guests are very demanding and expect everything brand-new,” he said, adding that amenities like full-size bottles of shampoo and slippers that are intended for guests to take home — occasionally including trendy models from the boutique brand Brunch — “shows the luxury aspect” of hospitality.

‘Rethinking’ slippers

The waste associated with disposable slippers is sizable, according to Mr. Legrand of IU, who calculated that high-end hotels in the United States with an average occupancy of 63 percent might discard more than 10 million pairs of slippers a month.

In a 2018 study, Chekitan S. Dev, a professor in the hospitality school at Cornell University, tracked 50 hotel amenities to determine how much they were used. Only 27 percent of guests used bathrobes supplied in the rooms. “We didn’t study slippers, but can safely assume that as many, or a few more, use slippers, especially as they are often unpacked and placed at bedside during turndown service, encouraging their use,” Mr. Dev said.

Hotel cleaning standards often dictate discarding slippers that have been removed from their packaging, according to members of Unite Here, the union that represents hotel housekeepers.

“Waste from hotel slippers may seem minor when compared to larger issues like energy consumption, food waste or water usage,” Mr. Legrand wrote. “However, at the end of the day, every bit of waste adds up and increasing attention is being paid to these aspects as part of a broader sustainable industry approach.”

Sourcing greener footwear

Hotel companies that have made commitments to banning single-use plastics have blazed a trail to more eco-friendly slippers.

Six Senses , a collection of 23 high-end resorts, offers slippers made from natural materials like jute or bamboo, or from recycled plastic. Six Senses Crans-Montana in Switzerland stocks Kaaita felt slippers made from recycled plastic bottles that can be washed and reused or recycled at the end of their life span. Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group phased out single-use slippers in 2022 and replaced them with models made of cardboard, cork and cotton that are cleaned and restocked in the rooms. The Dorian, Autograph Collection hotel in Calgary, Canada, stopped supplying disposable slippers in the hotel’s suites in favor of upgraded ones that are thicker and more durable; they are available on demand to guests in other rooms. Patrons are encouraged to take them home for “multiple uses rather than single use,” wrote Ian Jones, the general manager, in an email.

Green Key , which vets hotels for sustainability practices, suggests hotels make slippers and other single-use amenities available on request, rather than mandating elimination. In keeping with its commitment to eliminate single-use plastics, the Sheraton San Diego Hotel & Marina only supplies slippers to guests who ask for them.

Few slipper-supplying resorts go as far to reduce footwear waste as Alila Villas Uluwatu in Bali. At its on-site Sustainability Lab, which turns glass bottles into drinking glasses and old umbrellas into tote bags, shredded slipper parts become stuffing for bean bag chairs.

“By closing the loop on waste, we are creating a circular economy,” said Morgan Martinello, the resort’s general manager.

Refuse or reuse

Will travelers start bringing their own slippers the way they carry their own water bottles and shopping bags? They might have to.

“We are having many a debate about slippers, pens, cotton balls, toiletries,” said Oliver Milne-Watson, the general manager of the Newman , a luxury hotel set to open later this year in London. The rooms will not contain single-use plastics though the management has found it difficult to find a satisfying reusable slipper.

“We’re asking, ‘Can we make this with something with a longer life cycle and if not do we really need it?’” Mr. Milne-Watson said.

Experts doubt the needle on slippers will fully swing until travelers speak up.

“We are at the stage now with this as it was with food waste a few years ago,” Mr. LaGrand, the IU professor, said. “It is when we start monitoring, measuring and quantifying both the cost of sourcing and wasting that the realization kicks in: We must do something about it!”

They are already on the minds of some travelers.

“I’ve contemplated how short of a life span these tend to have in the past, and now I’ve gotten into the habit of taking my used pair with me when I leave the hotel,” said Karla Cobreiro, 33, a publicist based in Miami. She puts them in a carry-on alongside a sleep mask and other essentials. “Now I slip into them on long flights.”

The bed was very good, as was the free WiFi There was also a washing machine available for the guests to use Next the manager Pawan was exceedingly helpful in taking into account the needs of his guests and was excellent in providing details about the area of Naddi where the homestay is based Also having a restaurant on site made ordering food exceedingly easy I would wholeheartedly reuse this homestay next time I am in Naddi again and would strongly recommend this accommodation for anyone who wants to stay in Naddi as its very peaceful compared to the nearby town The price of the homestay was also excellent and made my stay extremely enjoyable David Youde
