Ukrainian band DakhaBrakha delivers an urgent message to U.S. audiences

The Ukrainian band DakhaBrakha.

The Ukrainian band DakhaBrakha calls itself "ethno-chaos." Over the past decade, this Ukrainian-folk-meets-punk group has brought their music to audiences around the world. They recently kicked off a U.S. tour — just weeks after Russia invaded their country.

For years, DakhaBrakha has called themselves "ambassadors of free Ukraine." Their shows have been punctuated with cries of "Stop Putin!" and "No war!" Now, they hear those demands reflected and amplified around the world.

This quartet's name means "give/take" in old Ukrainian — and that's exactly what they do. Cabaret, jazz, rock and hip-hop are all part of the band's DNA. But they also explore all kinds of old Ukrainian folk styles, fed through the prism of the 21st century.

Marko Halanevych, the group's only male musician, usually does the public talking; the other three musicians, Iryna Kovalenko, Olena Tsybulska, and Nina Garenetska, let the music speak for them. During our conversation, the band's manager, Iryna Gorban, interpreted for us. At the forefront of everyone's minds was the fact that this tour was happening amid so much violence and heartache at home.

"Well, of course, it's a big pain and it's a big tragedy for our country, and we feel it every moment," Halanevych says. "A lot of people in Ukraine and around the world, they tell us it's our best possibility to be useful and helpful, is to be on stage and to show people our culture, music and to tell our story and to tell the story of our country."

The band has a highly honed sense of showmanship — DakhaBrakha was born at an experimental theater in Kyiv, as was their sister group, Dakh Daughters . When DakhaBrakha first hit the international scene about a decade ago, they wore unforgettable tall, angular hats and rich costumes that evoked an array of Ukrainian ethnic styles. Their music was fierce, exuberant and understitched with humor. They were playful.

But for this current tour, the group had to take on a far more serious and urgent tone. The projected backdrops include videos of ravaged Ukraine. The comments from the stage are all about their country's plight. And there are collections at the door for a charity that aids Ukraine. Halanevych says the band hopes their audiences understand the need for that shift.

"Usually we of course had fun onstage and we have this humor, but not in this program with every minute, people dying in your country," he notes. "So it's really impossible to to feel this joy of music. So that's why it's really complicated to find this balance between art and political expression. But we try to do it."

Part of the Russian propaganda message has been that Ukraine doesn't exist as an independent nation, with its own culture, history, and language.

Here's how propaganda is clouding Russians' understanding of the war in Ukraine

Ukraine invasion — explained

Here's how propaganda is clouding russians' understanding of the war in ukraine.

But that is a big part of the reason for DakhaBrakha's existence. Maria Sonevytsky is an ethnomusicologist who teaches at Bard College in New York. She has written about DakhaBrakha extensively .

"I think one of the most powerful things that DakhaBrakha can offer is that they show both that there is a very rich past in Ukraine, and they show this by bringing together a diversity of musical practices from different regions of Ukraine, from different ethnic groups within Ukraine," Sonevytsky says. "And they fuse them together in a beautiful way that also suggests a future for Ukraine. It gives the lie to Putin's propaganda that Ukraine has no culture or history of its own."

"In fact," Sonevytsky continues, "what we see in DakhaBrakha's artistry is a deeply heterogeneous and complex history, the inheritance of multiple imperial experiences, the long history of attempts for Ukrainian sovereignty, and they blend together these kind of fractured pasts into a beautiful whole that is not simple, and it can't be simply reduced down to a story of one nation that is occupied by one people, but instead suggests a vibrant, if imperfect, democracy."

Despite DakhaBrakha's ambivalence about touring under such complicated circumstances, Sonevytsky says that it's still a channel for Americans to make a personal and emotional connection with Ukraine.

"No Ukrainian musician that I know would say that their songs are going to stand up against a nuclear bomb. Nobody's delusional enough to say anything like that," she says. "But if we're fighting against what may be an attempted genocide, the entire erasure of Ukraine, then I think keeping this culture in the front of our minds, learning more about it, listening, is essential."

As it turns out, the band had no reason to worry about the American audience's response. At the end of a recent show, the audience stood — and some sang along — as the band sang the Ukrainian national anthem.

With that goal of connecting audiences to Ukraine, DakhaBrakha continues its U.S. tour this month and into May.

Recent tour reviews

On the stage 4 chairs, a cajón, an accordion, a drum set, a bass drum and the signature cello with patterns that make it look like embroidery.

Enter the musicians, the ladies wearing long white gowns with black floral patterns.

Tataryn-Bratko, the first song of the set, gives a first taste of what the artists mean when they define their genre as ethno-chaos. They had a layer of drums that would make a Brazilian samba band envious to a folk song, originally acapella.

Many of the songs follow a common pattern, the voices of the ladies intertwined in a choir, the cello played roughly and dirt on the same registrer.

Marko's scat-like meowing appears also in several songs.

The crowd pleasers that make people dance, like Lado or Yanky are mixed with more somber songs, sometimes hard to distinguish from one another.

The animations by Sashko Danylenko for Karpatskyi Rap and Monakh are quite good.

Vesna is the highlight of the concert in my opinion.

Ukrainian musicians bring message of resilience to Oregon

dakhabrakha tour usa

Ukrainian music group DakhaBrakha will perform at the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts in Beaverton.

Courtesy of Tanya Vilchynska

The Ukrainian folk music group DakhaBrakha is touring the U.S. as cultural ambassadors for their war-torn homeland.

Direct from Kyiv, the band’s next stop will be at the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts in Beaverton this Sunday and Monday.

DakhaBrakha’s music can best be described as “ethno-chaos” combining elements of traditional Ukrainian folk music with modern pop, punk and hip hop.

Their name roughly translates to “Give and Take” and speaks to their message of resilience as a group and as Ukrainian people.

The band members hope that by continuing to play across the U.S., they will raise awareness of the atrocities that are taking place back home in Ukraine.

Chris Ayzoukian, the Reser’s Executive Director, says it’s important to show support for the group.

“They have been very brave to go out on this tour. The least we can do is share their music and share their culture,” he said.

Other Ukrainian community members will share their work in the lobby on both nights.

Tatiana Terdal, a board member of the Ukrainian-American Cultural Association of Oregon and Southwest Washington , will set up a table displaying arts and crafts from Ukraine including embroidered clothes, books and pysanky, Ukrainian Easter eggs.

Terdal wanted to show her support for DakhaBrakha while also educating the public on Ukraine’s rich history.

“Ukrainian culture is an ancient culture,” she says. “At the same time, it’s a live culture. It’s changing, adapting, growing roots to create something new. It’s ancient and modern and worth protecting and fighting for.”

Both shows are currently sold out but Ayzoukian says limited tickets might be available at the box office before each show starts. Otherwise, he encourages supporters to donate to the Ukrainian relief effort .

“What I hope people will take away from DakhaBrakha’s story is first a phenomenal evening of Ukrainian and contemporary music, but also a deeper understanding of what Ukraine’s going through.”

DakhaBrakha, a Band From Kyiv, Saw a War Coming

“We can’t make any music,” the singer and cellist Nina Garenetska said. “This is our life now: An air raid siren goes off.”

dakhabrakha tour usa

By Laura van Straaten

For years, the Ukrainian band DakhaBrakha has ended its shows chanting, “Stop Putin! No war!” What they had protested has now come to pass.

DakhaBrakha , based in Kyiv, has long served as ambassadors for Ukrainian music and culture, at once preserving and transforming them. The group gives the polyphonic harmonies of Ukrainian traditional songs a contemporary, internationalist makeover, using African, Australian, Arabic, Indian and Russian instrumentation alongside punk, scatting, hip-hop, trance and dance influences. Their appearance has always been equally striking, especially for the three women in the quartet: towering fur hats, long matching dresses and wildly colorful Iris Apfel -style jewelry.

“DhakhaBrakha often sings about love, heartbreak or the seasons, but as stand-in for bigger things — sometimes political things — and how they do it expands upon Ukrainian traditional music that uses metaphor in this way,” said Maria Sonevytsky , an associate professor of anthropology and music at Bard College, in New York, who devoted a chapter in a recent book to DakhaBrakha and gave a public lecture Wednesday on “Understanding the War on Ukraine Through Its Musical Culture.”

The singer and cellist Nina Garenetska, the singer and multi-instrumentalist Marko Halanevych, the singer and multi-instrumentalist Iryna Kovalenko, and the singer and percussionist Olena Tsybulska came together in 2004 as a house band for the experimental theater company Dakh in Kyiv. The three women had studied as ethnomusicologists, and they had delved into Ukraine’s varied regional styles. About eight years ago, the band’s concerts began integrating videos of the violence near Kyiv’s Maidan Nezalezhnosti (“Independence Square”), when paramilitary police in Kyiv cracked down on people protesting after then-President Viktor Yanukovych broke a promise to sign political and free-trade agreements with the European Union, tilting his nation toward Russia instead. The Yanukovych government was ousted; later in 2014, Russia annexed Crimea .

In the years since, as DakhaBrakha has gone on to tour the world many times over, the band has turned up the volume on its political messaging and activism.

DakhaBrakha first performed in North America in 2013, in Toronto. It came to the United States a few months later, and has since performed at Globalfest in New York, Bonnaroo in Tennessee and twice as part of NPR’s Tiny Desk concert series . On Friday and Saturday, the San Francisco Jazz Festival will offer two free online broadcasts of the DakhaBrakha concert that was filmed at the SFJazz Center on July 18, 2018, and is encouraging viewers to donate to a fund to support the band.

In a video chat on Tuesday, Halanevych and Garenetska spoke with The New York Times through translators alongside their longtime artistic manager, Iryna Gorban, about their last shows before the war began and their hopes for the future. These are edited excerpts from the conversation.

Marko, I can see you are pulled over by the side of the road. Have you left Kyiv?

HALANEVYCH Yes. It’s a total mess on the Ukrainian roads. I have with me my wife, also a musician, for Dakh Daughters , and two beautiful girls, 4 and 12. I am trying to save their lives by moving to a safer place near my relatives in the west — far from the border with Russia and Belarus. Not necessarily safe. My parents decided to stay. They said they would defend our house. [Laughs] I couldn’t persuade them. And I haven’t told my family yet, but I will be going back to Kyiv, to offer my help anywhere where it is needed, maybe in local defense.

And you, Nina?

GARENETSKA I am in our apartment with my son, who is a year and 10 months old, my husband and my mother, in Kyiv.

How has it been, staying in Kyiv?

GARENETSKA We can’t make any music. Because this is our life now: An air raid siren goes off — you go downstairs, you wait, you go back up. And this is nonstop. When it is too dangerous, we will run to the bomb shelter.

Tell me about your last concert.

GARENETSKA During our last concert, I was tearing up all the time with a weird mix: fear, love, but also hope and faith that everything will be OK. We had a small tour of five or six concerts in Europe — Ukraine, Slovenia, Prague, Oslo. From Oslo we flew to Zaporizhzhya [in southeastern Ukraine], and we came back to Kyiv literally for the day. The next day, we were going to continue touring, but we didn’t go because at 5 a.m. Thursday, the war started.

And since then, what has DakhaBrakha heard from your fan base in Ukraine?

GORBAN To share their emotions, many people here are posting on social media the last picture or video they took just before the war started. And we saw that many are from DakhaBrakha’s last concerts, where, as usual, DakhaBrakha says “Stop Putin!” and “No War!” and “Free Ukraine!” — and of course people are really in solidarity with this.

How and when did DakhaBrakha decide to bring more overt statements about the conflict with Russia to your concerts?

HALANEVYCH At a certain moment, we understood that this threat needed to be talked about more to send a stronger message to the world. And we started speaking out about how Ukraine had decided once and for all to leave Russia’s orbit and separate absolutely. We began saying “Stop Putin!” We showed the videos of the events at Maidan, we had posters, and since then, we say those mottos at every concert. But we were not heard.

Musically, have your concerts addressed this conflict about Ukrainian sovereignty?

GORBAN DakhaBrakha has produced songs from many different regions of Ukraine, and we tried to unite our country in this way, through music. At our concerts, during the last year, we played at each concert a song for people who defend our freedom . It is a very special moment for people; it makes them stand up and feel brave and confident. It makes you believe in our nation. We also have a special requiem devoted to those who gave their lives in this struggle. We almost never play this live, only very special occasions.

What is at risk if this war lasts, culturally speaking?

HALANEVYCH The risk is that Ukrainians will disappear as a nation and that the Ukrainian culture will disappear. For 300 years, Russia did everything for Ukrainian culture to disappear. Also, in recent years, the last 30 and especially the last eight, we Ukrainians feel what it is like to be a free people.

To be a free people is something that Russia hasn’t had for a very long time. They will never understand us. And we will never understand them. And it is important to understand that what is happening with Ukraine now — if you will not stop this evil, it will spread to the rest of the world.

What kind of support is DakhaBrakha getting from fellow musicians and fans?

GORBAN All the venues, festivals, partners, musicians we have met at the festivals have sent hundreds and hundreds of messages. People have offered to donate money through the fund we support and to host DakhaBrakha and our families.

You were supposed to be finishing a European tour around now. What will happen to those shows, and the more than 70 dates you had booked for a tour of North America ?

GORBAN We are just a month until the start of the tour, so it’s too early to discuss it, because the situation is changing every hour. Of course, we hope that the war will stop in the nearest future. This was supposed to be the first tour after two years of the Covid pandemic. And we don’t want to live in these kind of conditions for months or years. If it stops, we will go, and we will continue our work and show our culture to the world. People are waiting for us.

Our Coverage of the War in Ukraine

News and Analysis

The top American military commander in Europe warned that Ukraine could lose the war with Russia  if the United States did not send more ammunition to Ukrainian forces, and fast.

Ukrainian lawmakers passed a mobilization law aimed at replenishing the nation’s exhausted and depleted fighting forces .

China’s top leader, Xi Jinping, and Russia’s foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, met in Beijing . The visit came days after the United States threatened new sanctions against Chinese companies if they aided Russia’s war in Ukraine.

Hollowing Out a Generation:  Ukraine desperately needs new recruits, but it is running up against a critical demographic constraint long in the making: It has very few young men .

Conditional Support: Ukraine wants a formal invitation to join NATO, but the alliance has no appetite for taking on a new member  that would draw it into the biggest land war in Europe since 1945.

‘Shell Hunger’: A desperate shortage of munitions in Ukraine  is warping tactics and the types of weapons employed, and what few munitions remain are often mismatched with battlefield needs.

Learn More About the Artist

Reflecting fundamental elements of sound and soul, Ukrainian “ethno chaos” band DakhaBrakha creates a world of unexpected new music.

DakhaBrakha was created in 2004 at the Kyiv Center of Contemporary Art “DAKH” by the avant-garde theater director Vladyslav Troitskyi and given the name that means “give/take” in old Ukrainian. The theater has left its mark on the band, as their performances always have a strong visual component.

After experimenting with Ukrainian folk music, the band added rhythms of the surrounding world into their music, thus creating their bright, unique, and unforgettable sound. They strive to help open up the potential of Ukrainian melodies and to bring it to the hearts and consciousness of the younger generation in Ukraine and the rest of the world as well.

Accompanied by Indian, Arabic, African, Russian and Australian traditional instrumentation, the quartet’s astonishingly powerful and uncompromising vocal range creates a trans-national sound rooted in Ukrainian culture. At the crossroads of Ukrainian folklore and theater, their musical spectrum is at first intimate then riotous, plumbing the depths of contemporary roots and rhythms, inspiring “cultural and artistic liberation”.

In March 2010, DakhaBrakha won the prestigiou s Grand Prix prize in the sphere of contemporary art. One year later, DakhaBrakha was discovered by Australian Womadelaide and began their ascent in the international music scene. They have since played more than 300 concerts and performances and have taken part in major international festivals throughout Eastern and Western Europe, Russia, Asia, Australia, and North America. DakhaBrakha has also collaborated with such international musicians as: Port Mone (By), Kimmo Pohjonen Cluster (Fi), Karl Frierson (DePhazz) (Ge), Steve Cooney (IRL), Inna Zhelannaya (Ru), Kievbass (UA), Djam (UA-Iran), and David Ingibaryan (Hu).

Spanish songwriter Leiva, and on April 11, the distinguished artist will release his highly awaited new single “Diamantes” featuring Argentine band El Zar. It is the third single off his forthcoming EP and will be released along with a compelling music video written by Siddhartha himself.

After wrapping up the U.S. leg of the tour, Siddhartha will return to the studio to record his highly anticipated new studio album, the seventh of his career, which promises to showcase the next intriguing phase in his artistic evolution.

Siddhartha is one of the most respected musical figures in Mexico and ended 2023 with an incredible sold-out show at the country’s legendary venue El Foro Sol, where in front of more than 60,000 fans he delivered the best of his repertoire, including favorites from the now-Gold-certified album that lent its name to the tour. He has continued that remarkable momentum into 2024 and is sure to leave fans speechless once again with his last live performances of the year.
