Update: Some travel ban lifted in Erie County, caution urged in Niagara County

Jan. 14—The travel ban for passenger and commercial vehicles in Erie County has been lifted in Grand Island, Tonawanda, Amherst, Clarence and Newstead.

Central Erie County and many Southtowns will remain under a full travel ban until further notice, and the Thruway remains closed to commercial traffic between Exit 46 and the Pennsylvania State Line. Drivers are advised to stay off the roads and avoid unnecessary travel.

There are no travel restrictions in Niagara County, with emergency officials urging drivers to use caution. "There are places in the county that got very little snow but others that got quite a bit. Plows from the various agencies are out trying to clean up what we have seen so far," a message from the Niagara County Emergency Services Facebook read late Sunday morning.

New Yorkers in Western New York are being urged to stay home throughout the duration of the storm. Travel in impacted areas could be dangerous at times throughout the evening due to blizzard-like conditions.

"Our crews have been working around the clock to keep the roads clear and New Yorkers safe, and I am grateful that the vast majority of New Yorkers heeded our ban and stayed off the road," Gov. Kathy Hochul said. "As conditions are improving int eh north towns we are lifting the travel ban there, but if you do not have to travel today, stay home and let our crews continue to work. If you are in central Erie County and much of the Southtowns, continue to stay home."

Currently, there are 25,569 outages statewide, including 18,518 outages in the Mid-Hudson region, 90 in Western New York and 42 in the North Country. Utility crews have kept up with the level of power outages incurred to date, and remain on standby to restore any additional power outages if and when they occur.

The travel ban was lifted Sunday morning in the Towns of Collins, North Collins, Concord, Sardinia, Colden and Holland, as well as in the Villages of North Collins and Springville.

Heavy lake effect snow will continue off the eastern shores of both Lake Erie and Lake Ontario throughout Sunday, with snowfall rates of 2 to 3 inches possible, as well as thundersnow in the heaviest parts of the bands. Winds will begin out of the southwest Sunday morning gusting at 35-40 mph and will increase to 40-50 mph this afternoon.

Tonight, snowfall rates are expected to remain at 2 to3 inches per hour in the heaviest bands, but wind gusts will diminish to 30 mph. In Western New York, the band is expected to oscillate near or just south of Buffalo for most of the night, while in the North Country, the band is expected to oscillate between the central Tug Hill plateau and Watertown. Travel ban lifted in Erie County as road conditions improve, warmer weather settles in

A travel ban has been lifted in New York’s Erie County, days after it was put into place as a deadly blizzard swept across the region, at times reducing visibility to zero.

The ban, which was implemented Friday, expired at 12:01 a.m. Thursday, officials said.

Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown told reporters Wednesday night that the roads were in good enough condition to lift the ban.

“It has been 6 days,” Brown said. “Some people have not been able to restock groceries, to restock medications, to get to medical appointments, and being able to lift the travel ban safely now will allow people to do those important things.”

Most streets in the city are passable, Brown said, and he expected crews to have made a pass down the center of every residential street by the end of the night.

Though the ban has been lifted, a travel advisory was in place for Erie County as cleanup continues and a county-wide state of emergency remained. Brown asked people to be cautious and avoid driving unless necessary.

More than 450 pieces of equipment were on Buffalo streets plowing and hauling snow, and many traffic signals were still not working, he said.

The storm dumped upwards of 20 inches of snow in parts of New York — including nearly 52 inches at Buffalo Niagara International Airport, according to the National Weather Service.

The powerful storm plunged much of the United States into a deep freeze, creating life-threatening conditions as more than 1 million homes and businesses were left in the dark, and wreaking havoc on flight schedules during the busy holiday travel week.

At least 76 people died in the storm, according to an NBC News tally. Erie County accounted for 37 of the deaths, 29 of which were in Buffalo.

Weather-related deaths were also reported in Colorado, Kansas, Kentucky, Ohio, Nebraska, Missouri, Oklahoma, Michigan, South Carolina, Tennessee, Wisconsin, Illinois and Vermont.

In Buffalo, officials said it was possible the number could rise.

Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said Wednesday night that police have cleared the backlog of calls relating to welfare checks, stranded motorists and reports of bodies.

The monster storm that killed dozens in the US over the Christmas weekend continued to inflict misery on New York state and air travellers nationwide, as stories emerged of families trapped for days during the "blizzard of the century."

Search and rescue teams were returning Thursday to check locations where bodies had been reported but could not be confirmed — either because of the amount of snow or the vagueness of location, Gramaglia said.

"We believe there were some credible 911 calls that contained more information ... low single digit numbers, that's again why we're going to concentrate our efforts on hitting those areas," he told reporters.

In Erie County, 17 of the people who died in the blizzard were found outside and four were in a vehicle , according to County Executive Mark Poloncarz.

Several people died because of a delay receiving emergency services or from cardiac events related to shoveling or blowing snow. Of the deaths, nine were people who died because they had no heat in their homes, he said.

Poloncarz said in a tweet Wednesday night that 500 National Guard members have conducted nearly 850 welfare checks on residents who had longterm power outages.

Power was being restored to New York, and by early Thursday, about 400 customers in the state were without electricity, according to PowerOutage.us .

In Buffalo, where more than 20,000 customers were without power at one point during the storm, only three had no electricity Wednesday night, according to Brown, the mayor.

On Wednesday, city offices, facilities and roadways opened, as temperatures rose into the 40s across parts of New York.

Buffalo Niagara International Airport, which has been closed since Friday , reopened Wednesday.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said Wednesday night that all major state highways in western New York, including the Erie County portion of Interstate 190 and several state routes, would reopen at midnight.

“I am extremely grateful to all the highway maintenance workers, first responders and emergency service staff who continue to work tirelessly to help their fellow New Yorkers," Hochul said in a statement .

The temperature is expected to continue climbing to the low-50s in the Buffalo region by Friday, and will help melt the accumulated snow, according to the National Weather Service .

Travel bans remain in some areas after lake effect storm

Lake effect snow storm.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The lake effect snow storm that hit western New York is easing up. But there are still some travel bans in effect Monday morning.

Governor Kathy Hochul released a statement Sunday night saying all current travel bans and advisories in Erie County will remain in effect until 6 a.m. Monday.

Right now, only three towns in Erie County are under travel bans. That does not include Buffalo or Orchard Park.

The rest of the county is under a travel advisory.

In our area, Genesee County has already lifted its travel advisory.

In Sunday’s press conference, the governor said despite rumors, Monday’s Buffalo Bills game will not be postponed again.

“Weather conditions will be very cold. They’ll be in the teens and even wind chill factors as low as zero, maybe to nine degrees. But that’s going to be very, very cold. But this will be without the danger of the winds and the blinding snow and the hazardous traffic conditions as they travel to the stadium or leaving,” says Hochul.

Sunday night, Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz asked for volunteers in the Buffalo community to help shovel out Highmark Stadium.

Volunteers had special permission to travel to the stadium starting at 10 Sunday night.

NCSO: Travel ban lifted in Niagara County; Erie County in 'major coordination effort'

Submitted + updated.

On Sunday morning, the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office announced, “Effective immediately the travel ban for Niagara County has been lifted. A travel advisory will remain in place at this time. A travel advisory is also in place for the City of Lockport, City of Niagara Falls and the City of North Tonawanda.

Please use caution when traveling due to varying roadway conditions.”

City of Niagara Falls: Travel Ban Lifted, but Advisory Remains

From the Office of Mayor Robert Restaino:

“Merry Christmas! Our crews have been working throughout the night to clear obstructions and move snow drifts. The city will remove the travel ban but will maintain a travel advisory. Please exercise extreme caution if you are going to drive, as conditions in some areas are still challenging. Please remember your cooperation is necessary to effectively clean and clear snow from roadways.”

The office added, “As we continue to clear our streets, abandoned vehicles are being towed to make way for plows to clear the road. If you have had your vehicle towed, please call 716-286-4711 to receive information on your vehicle.”

The New York State Thruway Authority announced, “BUFFALO: ROAD CLOSED TO ALL TRAFFIC I-90 BETWEEN EXIT 46 ROCHESTER AND THE PA STATE LINE. I-90 in both directions, between Exit 46 Henrietta and the Pennsylvania state line, closed to ALL TRAFFIC, due to weather.”

And, “BUFFALO: ROAD CLOSED TO ALL TRAFFIC I-190 BETWEEN MILEMARKER 0 AND 21.1 ROAD CLOSED TO ALL TRAFFIC: I-190 in both directions between mile marker 0 and 21.2, due to weather.”

•Shortly after 1 p.m., Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz tweeted:

“A countywide driving ban remains in effect. Non-emergency vehicles on the roads right now slow down responses and power restoration for everyone. You may get stuck yourself, going from somewhere passable to somewhere impassable.”

Prior to that, he tweeted:

“The snow ban has unfortunately moved north again and has intensified, though still south of the worst impacted areas. Our @ErieCountyDPW crews report that snow is falling at a rate of 2-3" per hour and whiteout conditions persist.”

“The countywide driving ban remains as the storm ban shifts and is now hitting areas only lightly impacted by the storm up until this point.”

“From @ErieCountyESU Commissioner Neaverth, today is a major coordination effort. With visibility improved, we can deploy even more assets and partners to get into areas that were unable to be accessed up until this point.”

“Crews are out in the southtowns now as snow is falling at 3" per hour in some areas. This is why we need everyone to stay off the roads. We are clearing roads for emergency crews to continue to get where they're needed - and to make sure no more folks get stuck as the storm moves.”

“Strike team rescues are still focusing on individuals trapped in vehicles, and our other priority is working with utilities to get power restored. We are still trying to get into some of the hardest hit areas, particularly in the City of Buffalo.”

“If the storm has subsided near you and there is an open road, do not plan on going into the City of Buffalo to try and rescue family/friends. Most of Buffalo is still impassable. Just because it looks open near you, doesn't mean you will be able to get very far a few miles away.”

“While emergency services have resumed taking calls, but there are still significant delays due to impassable roads and stuck cars. This is especially true in the City of Buffalo. Our primary goal is to get solid routes open to the area hospitals.”

“This is not the Christmas any of us hoped for nor expected, but try to have as merry a Christmas as possible today. Remember the holiday spirit and why we're a community of good neighbors. Again, my deepest condolences to the families who have lost loved ones.”

All Erie County travel bans lifted

current travel bans erie county

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. — The travel bans that were put in place in Erie County on Wednesday due to the heavy lake effect snow were all lifted as of 8 a.m. Thursday.

READ MORE: All Erie County travel bans have been lifted, travel advisory remains in place for entire county

The travel ban that was in place for the City of North Tonawanda was lifted at 8 p.m. on Wednesday.

Governor Hochul released the following guidelines for traveling in winter weather:

  • Do not drive unless necessary.
  • If you must travel, make sure your car is stocked with survival gear like blankets, a shovel, a flashlight, extra batteries, extra warm clothing, a set of tire chains, battery booster cables, quick energy foods, and brightly colored cloth to use as a distress flag.
  • If you have a cell phone or other communications device such as a two-way radio available for your use, keep the battery charged and keep it with you whenever traveling. If you should become stranded, you will be able to call for help, advising rescuers of your location.
  • The leading cause of death and injuries during winter storms is transportation accidents. Before getting behind the wheel, make sure that your vehicle is clear of ice and snow; good vision is key to good driving. Plan your stops and keep more distance between cars. Be extra alert and remember that snowdrifts can hide smaller children. Always match your speed to the road and weather conditions.
  • It is important for motorists on all roads to note that snowplows travel at speeds up to 35 mph, which in many cases is lower than the posted speed limit, to ensure that salt being dispersed stays in the driving lanes and does not scatter off the roadways. Oftentimes on interstate highways, snowplows will operate side by side, as this is the most efficient and safe way to clear several lanes at one time.
  • Motorists and pedestrians should also keep in mind that snowplow drivers have limited lines of sight, and the size and weight of snowplows can make it very difficult to maneuver and stop quickly. Snow blowing from behind the plow can severely reduce visibility or cause whiteout conditions. Motorists should not attempt to pass snowplows or follow too closely. The safest place for motorists to drive is well behind the snowplows where the roadway is clear and salted. Never attempt to pass a snowplow while it is operating.

Local News | Lorain County Republican Party chairman not seeking re-election

Author

David Arredondo, executive chairman of the Lorain County Republican Party, announced April 15 he would not seek re-election.

“It gives me great pride to declare that the state of our party is strong, united and continues to grow. Our success has been a team effort,” Arredondo wrote in a news release. “Therefore, Lorain County will go Red again in 2024.”

Arredondo oversaw many changes in the party since being elected to the seat May 27, 2020, he stated.

“With the support of all our area chairs and contributors, I proceeded to make many improvements to upgrade our party organization, message and money,” he wrote.

During his tenure, the party acquired a new cell phone and number to enable representatives to answer the phone in real time and return messages promptly, according to the release.

The party also developed a new website which is updated with news, events and voting information.

Also, the party expanded its social media outlets such as its Facebook page and added LinkedIn and X accounts, the release stated.

“Most importantly, I write a Chairman’s Update newsletter every week,” he wrote.

The Republican Party opened its headquarters in August 2020 and maintained a daily presence until election day, Arredondo pointed out.

“Our areas shared in the daily staffing and enabled the public to stop in mostly for (former President Donald) Trump signs and literature. We helped feed the enthusiasm of the Trump voters who in turn helped elect most of our candidates. I fully expect that we will see the same dynamic this year,” Arredondo stated.

The party kept its forward momentum when it won the third commissioner seat in 2022 with “(Commission President Jeff) Riddell working hard to unseat the incumbent Democrat,” he wrote.

“For the past four years, it has been my determination to have every county office challenged. This year we have succeeded in doing so with the exception of four offices,” Arredondo stated.

He credited growth of the party with the addition of clubs which meet regularly such as the Vermilion Club that was initiated by Arredondo, the Erie County Republican Chairman Caleb Stidham; Lorain County Central Committee Chairman Jennifer Wasilk and former Vermilion Mayor Jean Anderson.

“The purpose was to bring together Vermilion Republicans in both Erie and Lorain counties,” Arredondo wrote.

The Republican Party has raised more than $100,000, most of which has been used to help its candidates in the last few years, he wrote.

“These funds helped our candidates in 2020 and 2022 and they will continue to help this year,” Arredondo wrote. “In 2020, Jeff Riddell, current county commissioner, began the Freedom Circle, a political PAC that raised $13,000.00 to help Michelle Hung and David Moore with last minute GOTV (Get Out The Vote).

“In 2022, the Freedom Circle provided substantial support for all our candidates. This year, we expect to do the same.”
