Each island has its own character and charm. St Kitts is an island of rolling hills and dense rainforest, while St Lucia is overlooked by the dramatic twin peaks of the Pitons. St Vincent is the perfect place to spot humpback and sperm whales as well as schools of dolphins. During a stop in Bridgetown, capital of Barbados, experience the British atmosphere and see the statue of Nelson in Trafalgar Square.

Bonaire’s white salt flats are inhabited by hundreds of pink flamingos. The island is also known for its fantastic diving spots, arguably some of the best in the Caribbean. Grenada is nicknamed the ‘Spice Island’ and has a mountainous interior, dominated by Mount St Catherine, and cascading waterfalls, while Tortola is the largest of the British Virgin Islands and home to Smuggler’s Cove. Its harbour is a magnet for yachts, and in the south, Sage Mountain National Park promises panoramic views over neighbouring cays.

Picture-postcard Dominica is renowned for its hot springs and tropical rainforest, and its capital, Roseau has colourful botanic gardens. Another popular port of call on a no-fly cruise to the Caribbean is Grand Cayman, the largest in the Cayman archipelago, and home to the ruins of colonial-era Fort George.

Some Caribbean cruises from the UK also visit picturesque Funchal in Madeira, renowned for its gardens and wine cellars, and idyllic Ponta Delgada, capital of the Azores.

Tropical shores & swaying palms, 2023, 2024 & 2025 cruises from southampton.

Let the tides take you to the best days of your life! White sand, sunny skies, and sparkling blue waters – the Caribbean is not just a place of swashbuckling adventure! Savour the island life as you relax on a beach and find your inner peace. Alternatively, seek a different kind of treasure when you embark on a cultural trek to Willemstad , kayak under the moonlight on a bio-luminescent lagoon in Trelawny, or mingle with marine life while snorkelling in Lower Belmont Bay.

Beaches and Views For Days!

As the world’s busiest and most popular cruise area, the vibrant Caribbean stretches for a glorious 1,000 miles between North and South America. The pristine shores and calm turquoise waters here need no introduction, but the diverse landscapes can also boast of lush tropical rainforests, vivid flower gardens, and rugged volcanic peaks with sulphur springs and rewarding views.

Those are just the natural attractions. Humanity has also left its own impression in the Caribbean, where you will experience a fusion of European, African, and Latin American influences. Its colonial heritage is also evident in the resplendent architecture of plantation houses, whilst legendary stories of glory (and defeat) still echo in fortresses and dockyards.

Whether it’s the charisma of its rural communities, exotic cuisine, or spirited music, each and every island has its own unique charm, but all are famous for their slow, easy and laid back lifestyle – enjoy the idyllic setting of Barbados, the rhythms of Jamaica, the stunning scenery of St Lucia, or the sun worshippers haven of Antigua.

If you haven’t yet succumbed to the art of limin’, revel in the party life the Caribbean is renowned for — from rum to reggae, festive BBQs to flamboyant carnivals — every moment promises to be an explosion of colour and energy.

However, if time doesn’t allow for a relaxing 4-week cruise to the islands, then why not take a look at our fly-cruise holidays .

Whatever vibe you’re after, the Caribbean has it in spades!

9. MSC Cruises

Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve is a standout private island visited by a number of the line’s vessels, including the new 5,877-passenger flagship MSC Seascape, which has been designed for warm climates with an expansive outside deck space. In 2015 the island, 65 miles off Miami, was an abandoned sand mine strewn with scrap metal. A four-year, £134 million regeneration project saw MSC Cruises transform it into an eco-friendly destination for Caribbean passengers, who can spend a day there or stay overnight on the island, where attractions include a lively Bahamian Junkanoo parade and an LED light show from the lighthouse. Well known for a family-friendly welcome, MSC Seascape has one of the biggest kids’ clubs in the fleet and the swashbuckling Pirate’s Cove waterpark.

17. Explora Journeys

The brand new line Explora Journeys, launching in July 2023 with the 922-passenger Explora I, marks the MSC Group’s move into the luxury cruise sector; albeit that’s not a word you’ll hear. The firm likens the brand to a top hotel that just happens to be at sea and sailings are called ocean journeys; cabins — each one with a balcony — are homes at sea; and shore excursions are destination experiences. The ship will sail in the Caribbean out of Miami, Bridgetown and San Juan to islands such as St Kitts, with the chance to take a cookery class, try your hand at making batik fabric or peer into a volcanic crater.

When is the best time to cruise the Caribbean?

With perfect timing for sun-starved Brits, the dry season runs from mid-December to mid-April and temperatures average 22C to 31C. Unsurprisingly, this is the most popular time to visit. The islands are quieter, and prices are cheaper, during the June to August wet season. Despite the name, showers are brief and temperatures are balmy. The hurricane season runs from June until November, peaking in July and August when there are bargains to be had. Ships steer clear of the storms but sometimes itineraries change.

What are the best things to do in the Caribbean?

Calm, clear waters make the Caribbean a top spot for diving, with lines offering beginners’ lessons and sessions for experienced divers, and you can snorkel off the beach for close-up views of the underwater wonderland. Get an authentic taste of the islands by visiting a chocolate factory, rum distillery or sugar plantation and check out colourful markets for crafts, spices and handmade souvenirs. Then simply sit back on deck with your favourite cocktail and watch some of the most spectacular sunsets at sea.

What should I pack for a cruise to the Caribbean?

Loose, lightweight clothes made from cotton or natural fibres are best for excursions. Trainers or comfortable sandals are a must, along with flip-flops and water shoes. Pack several pieces of swimwear so one set is always dry, plus a cover-up for the beach or to walk on deck. Don’t forget sunglasses, a folding sunhat and reef-friendly sunscreen. A rash vest and waterproof phone or camera case are good for water sports. Evening clothes are usually informal, but check your line’s dress code.

Everything you Need to Know About Caribbean Cruises

Caribbean cruises 2023: everything you need to know.

Hearing the word "Caribbean" conjures up images of white sandy beaches, superb scuba diving, lush jungles, long sunny days and maybe even luxury Caribbean cruises.

Of course, these are all entirely accurate, but this region - which contains more than 7,000 islands - is staggeringly diverse and so constitutes so much more than “just another beach holiday.”

Luxury Caribbean cruise operators are aiming to have a bumper 2023, with cruises planned right across the Caribbean, and with our Cruise Cover , you can benefit from extra protection for your cruise holiday for scenarios such as missed ports, unused excursions and cabin confinement.

Why are Caribbean cruises so popular?

The caribbean weather.

For a start, the Caribbean has great weather all year round. This means those suffering the winter blues in the UK, Europe or northern USA can always count on the Caribbean for a vitamin D top-up.

But more than sun, the Caribbean is superbly set up for cruise liners and smaller ships in 2023.

The Caribbean destinations

From St Kitts & Nevis to St Lucia, from Jamaica to Puerto Rico, cruise-ship-capable ports are dotted across the Caribbean, which makes it perfect for island-hopping - no matter how large or small a cruise ship is.

Depending on your cruise itinerary, you may have the opportunity to visit some of these truly stunning destinations:

Eastern Caribbean destinations

Eastern Caribbean cruises may call at Ports of call in:

  • Dominican Republic
  • Puerto Rico
  • British Virgin Islands
  • Turks and Caicos
  • St. Maarten
  • St. Vincent & The Grenadines

Southern Caribbean Island destinations

Western Caribbean destinations

Popular destinations for cruises ships visit in Western Caribbean include:

  • Grand Cayman

The variety of things to do in the Caribbean

Then there's activities such as water skiing, scuba diving and snorkeling, not to mention excursions around history-steeped ports like Nassau in the Bahamas, and Ocho Rios in Jamaica - the gateway to Dunn’s River Falls and Mystic Mountain.

Which cruise lines depart from the UK?

Several luxury cruise lines operate trips to the Caribbean directly from the UK. Chief among these are P&O Cruises, Cunard Line, and Fred. Olsen, which all depart from Southampton - the chief port for UK cruise departures.

Can I fly to the Caribbean for a cruise?

Absolutely. In fact, thousands of Britons do fly to the Caribbean for a cruise every year.

Benefits of Caribbean Fly-Cruises

The main benefit of flying directly to the Caribbean to start your cruise from there, is that it’s much quicker than cruising all the way from the UK to the Caribbean. And because it is quicker (and shorter), it is likely to be cheaper too.

Many "fly-cruises" are operated by American cruise lines such as Royal Caribbean cruises, Celebrity and Carnival (although the latter is half British!).

When is the best time of year to take a Caribbean cruise?

As mentioned, you can count on hot sunny days year-round in the Caribbean, but as to when is the best time to cruise the Caribbean, it really depends on your preferences when it comes to price, popularity and weather.

One of the best months for a Caribbean cruise is May, when the weather is good, yet prices are lower than the peak seasons.

Summer cruises or winter cruises to the Caribbean?

Winter caribbean cruises.

For many, the allure of escaping the cold British winter for some warm weather means they find winter cruises the best time cruise the Caribbean.

The peak season for Caribbean winter cruises runs from late December to early April

Temperatures in the southern Caribbean are slightly warmer during the winter, which is why you will find cruises to islands including Aruba, Barbados, Curacao and other nearby islands particularly popular during this time of year.

if you’re not keen on crowds, we recommend visiting between November and early December.

Summer Caribbean cruises

The peak season for Caribbean summer cruises runs from June through August, when the Caribbean experiences its best weather.

If your schedule compels you to book a summer cruise, you can still dodge the crowds by booking a luxury Caribbean cruise on a smaller ship.

Bear in mind, with the average temperatures reaching their peak in the summer months, if you intend to do a lot of sight-seeing during your Caribbean cruise, you might find this time of year too hot and humid.

Is summer not hurricane season in the Caribbean?

Hurricane season in the Caribbean lasts from June to November. However, the likelihood of a storm directly impacting your cruise remains low.

Cruise companies carefully monitor weather conditions and if a storm is forecast, itineraries can be swapped or completely changed to avoid going anywhere near the storm.

Rainfall for the tropical storms reaches its peak in September to October.

It will cost you a lot less to cruise during this time of year, and the likelihood of a storm directly impacting your cruise is low.

Best time to book your Caribbean cruise?

Decided you want to want to book a Caribbean cruise?  Perhaps you’re wondering when is the best time to book a Royal Caribbean cruise?

There’s no ‘one size fits all’ answer to the question as to when is the best time to book a cruise, it really all depends on your own personal requirements.

Benefits to booking your Caribbean cruise early

If you know where you want to go and the cabin style that you want to book, then you are best to book as early as possible.

Caribbean cruises have increased in popularity over the years, so booking early will help guarantee you get the exact cruise booking and accommodation you want.

Last minute cruise bookings

Cruise ships want to sail with as many of their cabins booked as possible, As such, booking a cruise last minute can often mean you can get some great deals.

It is worth noting though, that if it is close to a cruise’s departure date, many itineraries and cabins will have already been booked, leaving you with limited choice on availability.

Caribbean facts: Which Caribbean islands would I enjoy most?

Wherever you go on your cruise in the Caribbean, you'll likely get to experience wonderful beaches and plenty of sun.

Which part of the Caribbean is best to cruise? The following destinations have their own specialities:

  • Dominican Republic - The most visited Caribbean island with many beaches and lots of outdoor activities.
  • Cuba - The crumbling capital Havana offers old-world charm and jazz; plus art and museums; while nature reserves and pristine coastline can be enjoyed island-wide.
  • Jamaica - Known as the playground of the Caribbean; awe-inspiring waterfalls; Montego Bay nightlife and beach life; bob-sledding through the forest; swimming with dolphins.
  • The Bahamas - Boasts some of the world's finest beaches; laidback and vibrant, it's the quintessential tropical holiday destination.
  • British Virgin Islands – An archipelago of over 50 islands, explore Road Town, the heavily British influence capital located on Tortola, the popular the baths Virgin Gorda, Sage Mountain National Park, or enjoy snorkelling or scuba diving, the coral reefs off Anegada.

Here are some more Caribbean sea facts:

  • The Caribbean comprises more than 7,000 islands.
  • Only 10% of them are inhabited.
  • Six of the world’s seven sea turtle species inhabit the diverse marine habitats of the Wider Caribbean Region
  • Jamaica has the highest concentration of churches on the planet.

Table set for luxury dining aboard a cruise

Luxury Caribbean cruises vs regular ones

Whether you opt for a luxury Caribbean cruise, or a more standard Caribbean cruise, you can expect fabulous port stops, beautiful beaches and great on-board amenities with both types.

But those who select a high-end or luxury Caribbean cruise will benefit from smaller ships carrying fewer people.

Smaller vessels can navigate shallower waters, which makes it easier to visit quieter, off-the-beaten track ports, which of course have fewer crowds. Indeed, many luxury cruise lines avoid larger, busier ports.

With a smaller ship, it’s also a lot quicker and easier to disembark and re-embark - simply because it's simpler to organise a few dozen people, compared to a thousand or more!

Additionally, excursion groups tend to be smaller, which can result in a more intimate, relaxing experience.

While there are no hard-and-fast rules, luxury cruises generally emphasise cultural enrichment and historic lectures, in preference to loud, show-stopping entertainment.

This focus on quality extends to the food, too - with luxury cruise lines often priding themselves on sourcing fresh local ingredients and creating menus themed on local dishes.

By paying a little more for a luxury cruise holiday, you'll likely benefit from more spacious cabins with perks like premium toiletries and free minibars.

Luxury Caribbean cruise lines tend to have higher staffing ratios than more regular cruise operators, while passengers tend to be more mature - and more affluent.

Ariel view of huge cruise ship

What amenities can I expect on board my Caribbean cruise?

The experience you have on board your Caribbean cruise will of course depend largely on the cruise ship you book:

Huge, floating-resort cruise ships

In recent years the cruise industry has expanded massively, with a focus on vast floating resort style ships like Allure of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas - which can each carry more than 5,000 passengers.

Such cruise ships have a vast array of restaurants and bars, plus activities such as rock climbing and surf simulators - not to mention zip wires!

These cruise holidays are marketed towards families and groups, with a heavy emphasis on no-holds-barred-fun!

A medium-sized luxury cruise ship

But if sharing a ship with 5,000 other people (not including the crew!) isn’t your style, you might choose a more modest sized cruise ship, such as the Celebrity Silhouette.

It "only" has space for 2,886 passengers, but maintains a more sophisticated, chic approach. We're talking wine-and-cheese picnics or a game of bocce in the Lawn Club.

Cruises on this vessel also boast wine-tasting sessions, adding to the service expected by 5-star Caribbean cruises.

A smaller luxury ship

For a truly intimate onboard experience, opt for a smaller cruise ship, such as the 930-passenger-Viking Sea.

It's a more relaxed affair than the super-cruise ships above, with more bespoke shore excursions and a focus on specialty restaurants.

Cruise cabin

Choosing your cruise ship cabin

When selecting your cabin for your Caribbean cruise, be sure to check the deck plans first, before booking.

Locating (and avoiding!) the cabins beneath loud or late night cruise facilities can be a blessing if you like to go to bed early, rise late or are travelling with children.

Cabins to avoid on your Caribbean cruise:

Allure of the seas cabins to avoid for lack of privacy are cabins facing the Boardwalk and Central Park areas.

If peace and quiet is your thing, Celebrity Silhouette cabins to avoid due to noise include:

  • Cabins at the front of deck 6 located under the theatre
  • Cabins in the middle of deck 11, which are located under the main pool deck
  • Cabins towards the back of deck 12 which are under the buffet

Questions to consider before booking a Caribbean cruise in 2022

  • Does the cruise fare include gratuities (tips)?
  • What other fees will be added later to my Caribbean cruise?
  • Are there discounts for my Caribbean cruise, for kids, pensioners, NHS staff etc?
  • Does the particular Caribbean cruise have good reviews?
  • Does the cruise line have good reviews?
  • Do I book my Caribbean cruise excursions now, or when on board the cruise ship?
  • How much spending money should I budget, for my Caribbean cruise?
  • How big is the cruise ship?
  • What kind of cabin would suit me best, and is it available?
  • Is the price of the Caribbean cruise, per person or per cabin?
  • Are special diets accommodated for on the cruise?

UK tourists' holidays in Caribbean at risk and Foreign Office warns 'avoid'

UK tourists have seen their Caribbean holidays thrown into doubt - after Royal Caribbean suspended all cruises to popular destination for the rest of May. The cruise line has cancelled all its planned May sailings to a popular Caribbean destination due to unrest.

Royal Caribbean has halted all its sailings to Labadee. A spokesperson said: “We have suspended all visits to Labadee fleetwide through May 2024, and we continue to monitor the situation with our Global Security and Intelligence team.”

Allure of the Seas, Adventure of the Seas, Wonder of the Seas and Symphony of the Seas are all due to visit Labadee in May and will be affected by the decision . The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to Haiti, it says on a guide for tourists online.

READ MORE UK set for next mini-heatwave within days as England 'breaks 20C barrier'

It said: “There are currently no British consular officials in Haiti and our ability to provide consular assistance is severely limited and cannot be delivered in person in Haiti. If you choose to travel to or stay in Haiti against FCDO advice, try to avoid all crowds and public events, and take appropriate security precautions.”

The US airlifted non-essential embassy personnel and other citizens from Haiti late last month, with state department spokesperson Matthew Miller, saying: “The security situation in Haiti remains untenable due to the violence caused by gangs that claim to represent the Haitian people but thrive on violence and misery.”

But more than 70 Haitians expelled from the United States have been flown back to Haiti on the first deportation flight this week. “This is reckless and cruel,” said Nicole Phillips, legal director of the refugee advocacy group the Haitian Bridge Alliance. “These people are being sent back to an impossible situation where there is no work, no healthcare and no schools to send their children to. On top of that, there is also no real Haitian government to consent to the flight, and no one who can keep these people safe.”

Yvette D Clarke, a Democratic congresswoman and the co-chair of the House Haiti Caucus, said the decision to resume deportations was “unacceptable”.

The cruise line has cancelled all its planned May sailings to a popular Caribbean destination due to unrest.

Israel carried out strike on Iran, US officials say

Couple on viral nine-month cruise reveal huge daily wifi cost, joshua terry and ina ra sold their car and used savings to get on board the royal caribbean cruise trip, but have faced huge extra costs to stay online while at sea..

A couple on the viral nine-month Royal Caribbean cruise have revealed how they secured half price tickets for the worldwide voyage - only to end up paying more than $300 (£240) for onboard wifi.

Joshua Terry and his fiancee Ina Ra are among thousands of passengers on the global trip which departed Miami in December, making 150 stops in 275 days before its planned last leg in September 2024. The pair, who met in 2020, sold their car, investments and used savings to board the 'ultimate world cruise', securing a cheaper place on board as 'back-to-backers' with 17 individual trips, rather than the full price ticket.

After four months, the Serenade of the Seas has taken in the Americas, Asia and Australia, but also been beset by flooding, alcohol shortages and passenger tension as hundreds of TikTok influencers film the 'nine month reality show' on board. Having already shelled out $30,000 (£24,000) each for the trip, however, Joshua and Ina had to take another big financial hit to stay online at sea – as Royal Caribbean's WiFi costs $25.99 (£21) each day.

Speaking to Yahoo News UK about life on board, Terry, 34, said he initially thought the Royal Caribbean trip was unaffordable (full single tickets start at £42,462), so didn't consider booking. As time went on, however, the cruise company started selling mini segments of the trip. Ina said: “They came out with a new one with 17 small legs and then it became the whole cruise, so then we noticed the price is much better than the chunky one booking.”

Terry left his job as a comedy club manager and Ar quit hers at an IT company, they packed a suitcase each, and the pair - who'd planned to move house shortly before booking - joined the cruise. Terry added: “We already got rid of everything and just hopped on the world cruise, so we're not paying rent anywhere.”

Having booked their journey as 17 individual trips, the pair have to pack their cases after each of the two- to four-week segments and check back into a new room. Joshua said: “This is like 17 cruises in actuality, where everything is reset from payments to cards to events so a lot of it's repeated.”

Royal Caribbean passengers who want to check in online whilst at sea face hefty daily charges, as Joshua and Ina have discovered. The firm's VOOM on board internet packages charge guests $25.99 per day, with Joshua having so far paid $332 (£266) in WiFi charges, less than half way through the trip.

Joshua said he's requested free WiFi whilst on board as compensation for finding a maggot in his food during one meal, and the phone not working in their room, but only been offered a bottle of wine by Royal Caribbean instead.

Joshua, from Vancouver, Canada, has had to pay the significant wifi costs regularly on board to post TikToks of his trip, where he's gained 15,000 followers since boarding. A large number of TikTok influencers have boarded the 960ft Serenade of the Seas – with Terry adding that the constant filming and posting on social media has become a slightly sensitive subject on board.

He added: "There are people on the ship who are like, 'I hate TikTokers and social media'. They're here trying to enjoy the cruise, and there are people who are just filming. There was an announcement at one point where a staff member said: 'We won't have wifi, so there'll be no more TikToks for a bit', and everyone cheered."

The couple are considering getting married on the cruise, but due to the itinerary changes, they have not been able to make it happen yet. Terry also said that, as 'back-to-backers' rather than guests who paid for one single trip, they haven't been invited to all passenger meetings and 'have definitely been treated differently by Royal Caribbean'.

A Royal Caribbean spokesperson told Yahoo UK that WiFi is complimentary for cruise guests on the Ultimate World Cruise and Ultimate Cruise 60 nights+ segment, but for guests who 'choose to book the trip via multiple back-to-back sailings at an individual sailing rate', there is an 'additional cost'.

‘I could buy spices, a goat or a Kalashnikov’: Readers recall trips to places now off-limits

Our recent feature on places now deemed off-limits by the Foreign Office (“10 great destinations lost to modern travellers”) triggered a flurry of correspondence from readers. Scores of you got in touch to recount trips to Roman ruins in Libya, souks in Damascus, jungles in Venezuela and enthralling cities in Iran. The glut of emails revealed two things: how extraordinarily well travelled many Telegraph readers are, and how tragic it is that so much of the world has been struck from travel maps

Amsterdam doesn’t want any more tourists – so here are 10 alternatives

A 200-yard-long TikTok-generated queue for fries; shoulder-to-shoulder pedestrians in shopping streets; parks so packed they look like a festival is on the go; restaurants and cafes where you struggle to get a table – overtourism is strangling Amsterdam. Cheap air tickets and the direct London to Amsterdam Eurostar connection keep the people flowing in.

Danube river cruises: an ultimate guide to cruising Budapest and beyond

Why, when and how to sail along Europe’s second-longest river, which meanders through the likes of Vienna, Budapest and Bucharest

Its banks are lined with dramatic, unspoiled landscapes, postcard-perfect towns and villages, and grand, opulent cities . Take a river cruise down this majestic river and you’ll encounter some of the world’s most stunning countryside, including the UNESCO-protected Wachau Valley, along with an array of fascinating cultures.

Cruising Europe’s waterways is a great way to see more of the region in a short period of time than you might do by land, and a river cruise can be the ideal introduction to cruise holidays for first-timers.

While ships are smaller than those traversing across oceans, river cruise itineraries often feature big-name guests onboard – as is the case with our seven-night sailing along the Danube , when one of the UK's best-loved historians, Lucy Worsley (pictured below), joins guests on a private visit to Vienna’s Royal Lipizzaner Stables and Spanish Riding School.

What is the best time of year to cruise the Danube River?

The Danube is a year-round destination with the exception of January and February, when few cruise lines operate here. Summer, when the weather is hottest, is peak season and as a result Europe’s cities are particularly crowded. Because of that, we recommend taking a Danube river cruise in April, May, September and October. Good Housekeeping's seven-night itinerary sails in September, when the weather should still be balmy and dry, but the summer hordes have gone home.

Where does a Danube river cruise start and end?

The Danube either flows through or delineates part of the border of Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine. Many cruises traverse the stretch between the capital cities of Vienna, Austria and Budapest , Hungary, starting or ending at either location.

Our seven-night Danube river cruise with Lucy Worsley departs from the city of Engelhartszell in Austria before calling at Vienna (pictured below), the pretty town of Esztergom in Hungary and Budapest. You'll then loop back down the river, calling at Slovakia's capital Bratislava and the Wachau Valley in Austria before returning to Engelhartszell.

Is a Danube river cruise worth it?

Absolutely! If you love dazzling landscapes, magnificent architecture and fabulous food, a Danube river cruise is hard to beat. Exploring Europe by water requires no internal flights and train rides and eliminates schlepping around with your luggage in tow.

On a river cruise, you can discover multiple destinations – and even get to the heart of them with a guided tour, should you wish – in just one trip, all the while returning to the same luxurious stateroom and comfy bed each night.

What are the best things to do on a Danube river cruise?

One of the highlights of any Danube cruise is the Austrian capital, Vienna, with its musical heritage, imperial palaces, array of art museums, stunning Lipizzaner stallions, and delectable cuisine (a slice of Sachertorte chocolate cake is a must when in town!).

Secondly, Budapest, the capital of Hungary, boasts breath-taking architecture as well as historic thermal baths (pictured above), while Bratislava shouldn’t be overlooked with its lively 18th-century Old Town and impressive reconstructed hilltop castle from which you can look down over it.

Other hotspots along the Danube include the verdant Wachau Valley in Austria, which tumbles down to the riverbanks; and medieval Esztergom, Hungary’s former capital, which is home to the country’s largest church, Esztergom Basilica.

And that’s all without mentioning the entertainment and facilities onboard your ship. Join us on our seven-night Danube cruise and you’ll sail aboard A-ROSA FLORA, which boasts an onboard spa offering beauty and body treatments, gym, spacious sun deck, heated outdoor pool, outdoor restaurant with canopy top, bar and dancefloor, lounges and plenty of evening fun.

the largest medicinal bath in europe, the szechenyi thermal bath dates from the late 19th century

Which cruise lines offer Danube river cruises?

Among the companies offering cruises along the Danube are A-ROSA Cruises , with whom we have partnered to bring you our remarkable river cruise . A-ROSA has 20-plus years of experience in sailing couples, families, groups and solo travellers along some of Europe’s loveliest rivers in laidback style, giving you lots of freedom to explore port stops at your own pace.

How much does it cost to cruise the Danube?

Danube cruises can be great value, with our cruise through Austria, Hungary and Slovakia starting just over £2,000 per person for a week. All meals and drinks, including sparkling wines and cocktails, are included, as are snacks and afternoon tea. Also included is the use of the sauna, gym and top-deck heated swimming pool. You'll also get 15% off treatments in the onboard spa.

Sail the Danube and visit Vienna's famous riding school with Lucy Worsley in September 2024.
