Local Cuisine

Food in Hamburg has nothing to do with what you know as hamburgers. Herring is the most common fish here — it's served marinated in vinegar and fried as Brathering , a popular choice for lunch or dinner. Hamburger Hummersuppe , on the other hand, is a creamy lobster-based soup, while Hamburg sweets include sugary Franzbrotchen pastry and Hamburger Speck candies.

In addition to being cosmpolitan and chic, Moenckebergstrasse is Hamburg's most iconic shopping street. Stop in at the aptly named Art of Hamburg near the harbour to find forward-thinking fashions and handcrafted bags and other accessories during your Germany cruise. Take a trip back in time at Walter Eisenberg der Mutzenmacher, a classic hat shop, or take home an ornate beer stein.

Hamburg cruise port

Region Baltic - Norwegian Fjords - Russia

Local Time 2024-04-10 17:12

Port Hamburg cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Hamburg, Germany. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Port Hamburg (Hamburger Hafen) is Germany's largest seaport and one of the world's largest cruise ports, currently ranked Europe's 2nd-largest (after Rotterdam Holland ) and the world's 15th-busiest. It is also an Elbe River port handling ~10,000 inland vessels (including river cruise ships) annually.

As cruise port, Hamburg is currently ranked Europe's 2nd largest (after Southampton England ) and the world's 9th largest. The city has population around 1,8 million (metro over 5 million).

Hamburg is a major turnaround/cruise homeport in Northern Europe and one of the continent's largest ports of call on itineraries crossing the Atlantic Ocean and in the Baltic Sea (Norwegian Fjords, Scandinavia and Russia).

Port Hamburg (aka "Hafen Hamburg") is on Elbe River, approx 110 km (70 mi) from the North Sea. This is Germany's largest cargo / containership port. The port has large shipyards for shipbuilding and repairs and refurbishments of mega yachts and large cruise liners . A big part of the port's cruise ship schedule has listed (as homeported) vessels from the fleets of the German companies AIDA, TUI , Hapag-Lloyd , Fred Olsen , as well as CroisiEurope riverboats.

In the period October-April, HafenCity offers numerous sightseeing tour options, including the harbor waterway. There are also many great places for leisure, dining, shopping, and entertainment.

AIDA Kreuzfahrten is Hamburg Port's largest customer with year-round homeporting/turnaround operations. In 2023, AIDA alone had booked 124 ship berthings. AIDA also sponsors the annual maritime events Hamburg Harbour Birthday (May 7th) and the Hamburg Cruise Days (in September).

HafenCity Hamburg

HafenCity is an inner-city district of Hamburg. In the year 2000 (February 29), the city's Senate gave its approval to the Masterplan for building the new district. This project transformed the port's fringes (around downtown).

The plan originated in 1991 (after the fall of USSR / Cold War's end). Since 1995, the port's owner HafenCity Hamburg GmbH company started acquiring (secretly purchasing) crucial land areas that were private properties, adding them to the port's city-owned land.

In May 1997 was officially presented the "Vision HafenCity" design plan to the public. The plan required the inner city to regain its waterfront land (primarily Altona's River Elbe embankment, between Fischmarkt and Museumshafen). This affected only narrow land areas on the riverfront.

An area of approx 1,6 km2 (0,6 mi2) had be developed into a luxury inner-city district with mixed types of buildings (residential, leisure, cultural, business). The HafenCity area was removed from the Port of Hamburg territory. Under public law, a special fund was established to hold public lands in the city's ownership. The new Altenwerder container terminal was also funded by the city.

HafenCity urban development planning was launched in April 1999. The Hamburgplan project's official approval was announced in October 1999. HafenCity's urban redevelopment plan was approved by the city's Senate in February 2000. The plan was then opened up to discussion through various public events.

The Masterplan integrated existing and new buildings with the port's waterways. It also included the elevation of buildings (for flood protection) and the development of HafenCity's neighborhoods.

All city's cruise tourist activities are managed by CGH (Cruise Gate Hamburg). The company is co-owned by Hamburg Airport (49%) and Hamburg Port Authority (51%). The company was established in 2015 and is in charge of berth assignments at Steinwerder Terminal and (since 2016) also at the cruise terminals HafenCity and Altona. In September 2018, CGH turned its cruise terminal parking into multi-use parking also available for trucks (around 50 trailer lots) on no-ship days. The parking is CCTV-monitored and has restrooms.

Hamburg cruise port

Port Hamburg handles 10000+ ship calls per year. It has a total of 43 km / 27 mi quay walls. It serves 1200+ freight trains per week. It has 4 top-modern containership terminals, 7300+ logistic firms. The port handles over 0,5 million cruise tourists annually.

In 2015, MSC Cruises brought to the city 100,000+ tourists via 13 itineraries/visits. MSC Splendida (max capacity 3929 pax) became the biggest cruise vessel homeported in Hamburg. On June 1, 2015, while berthed (at Altona Terminal), AIDAsol was powered pierside by an LNG Hybrid Barge. The barge is a floating powerplant, on which LNG (liquefied natural gas) is heated and passed on to generators (5 motors) to produce electricity for the hotel operations on the ship while docked in port. The total power output provided by the barge is 7,5 MV. The new practice reduces greatly bad emissions and particle discharge in port (NO emissions by up to 80%, CO2 emissions by 30%).

In October 2015, Costa Group ( Carnival Corporation 's subsidiary controlling 3 brands - AIDA, Costa, Costa Asia) opened in Hamburg its Carnival Maritime facility. Carnival Maritime Center (supported by Lufthansa Technik) improves ship-to-shore communications by processing in real-time port traffic data with a single goal - to reduce to minimum cruise ship incidents in the port. Carnival Maritime also monitors the ships' fuel consumption and wastewater.

In February 2016, Carnival Corporation announced its collaboration with the Hamburg port's Vessel Coordination Center (abbrev HVCC) in order to facilitate port entries for the vessels of its subsidiary companies AIDA and Costa. Carnival will share the ships' expected port arrival/departure times with the port's NTK department, which will match the provided info with the port's current vessel traffic data and adjust (if necessary) the ship's speed. The optimized speed control results in fuel savings (lower fuel consumption and bad emissions) and reduced wait times in port. The HVCC center serves ocean-going ships (cruise vessels, feeder and inland waterway vessels) in Port of Hamburg, while its NTK department is controls the traffic flow. The HVCC is a joint venture of port's 2 containership terminal operators - HHLA and CTH (Eurogate).

On May 7, 2016, in Hamburg was christened the new AIDA ship AIDAprima . The vessel arrived in port together with AIDAaura . The event coincided with the port's 827th anniversary and featured a grandiose firework show. Prima docked at Altona, while Aura berthed at Steinwerder. Between May 5-7, 2017, over 1 million people enjoyed Germany's largest maritime festival live (on TV or social media). Over 355,000 passengers watched the Prime Time Special broadcasted live on AIDA's media channels. In 2016, the cruise port reported record-breaking year with a total of 171 ship calls and handled 710,000+ passengers.

In 2017, AIDA had 6 vessels deployed here for a total of 82 ship calls. Also in 2017, for the first time ever, NCL Norwegian homeported a ship ( Norwegian Jade ) in Hamburg. The ship's itineraries were 6-8- 9-nights (themed Norwegian Fjords, Norway and North Cape , Western Europe). During season 2017, the port reported a 12% increase (over 2016) in cruise passenger shipping traffic. Maiden port calls made the liners MSC Preziosa ( MSC ), Norwegian Jade ( NCL ) and Independence of the Seas ( RCI ).

In 2018, the cruise port had scheduled (booked) 220 ship calls (handled 212) by 50 different vessels and 26 different companies, with expected over 880,000 passengers. On May 13 here was held the naming ceremony of TUI's new (and ever-largest) liner Mein Schiff 1 . Other maiden calls included AIDAnova and MSC Meraviglia . Port's biggest cruise customer (AIDA) had booked 88 ship calls by 8 ships. The second biggest (MSC) booked 36 calls.

  • In 2018, MSC homeported here the company's ever-largest vessel - MSC Meraviglia (launched 2017), together with the fleetmate MSC Magnifica (max capacity 3605 pax). On June 24, 2018, the port received its ever-largest passenger ship - Meraviglia (max capacity 5386 passengers, 1400 crew, LOA length 315 m, GT 171598 tons).
  • In 2018, AIDA Cruises homeported here AIDAperla (launched 2017, max capacity 3400 pax). Between March-October 2018, the ship operated a 7-day itinerary to Southampton , Le Havre , Zeebrugge , Rotterdam .
  • Since July 2018, Port Hamburg offers 10% port fees discount for ESI-registered cruise vessels registered (Environmental Ship Index). ESI evaluates NOx and SOx quantities and CO2 emissions released by ships.
  • In late-October 2018 was reported that UK's eventual Brexit will seriously impact Port's trade volumes. ~1000 companies in Hamburg closed their businesses with British companies. Brexit impacted ~17,5% of the city's economic output.

With the inauguration of Cruise Center Baakenhoft (July 1, 2020), Port Hamburg (Kirchenpauerkai Baakenhafen, eastern HafenCity) started to serve cruise ships with previously booked dockings for Chicagokai (HafenCity-CC1). The Baakenhoft Terminal is only a temporary alternative for CC1, as this passenger terminal is going to be rebuilt and integrated into the new leisure complex in Uberseequartier.

Due to the Coronavirus crisis, in 2020 the Port handled just 81 cruise ship calls. In 2022, the cruise port reported a record year with 280 ship calls (49 different vessels from 20 brands/companies), including 10 maiden) and handled ~750,000 passengers. Hamburg Blohm+Voss shipyard

Port Hamburg is also famous for the shipyard Blohm+Voss (Blohm und Voss). Since 2016, this German shipbuilding and engineering company is owned by the Bremen -based, family-owned company Lurssen. The Hamburg shipyard was acquired by Star Capital Partners (private equity investor) from ThyssenKrupp (industrial group) in December 2011. The yard's purchase price remained undisclosed. With the acquisition of Bohm and Voss, Luerssen combined 6 shipyards in Germany with total employees around 2800.

Blohm+Voss (founded in 1877) is a shipbuilding and engineering company that provides services to both the military and civil sectors. The company also builds oil rigs, manages a drydock yard and provides regularly scheduled maintenance, refit and shiprepairs for large-sized cruise vessels. For bigger refit jobs, the shipyard manages ~3500 workers. There are also "flying squads" (groups of skilled workers) who are often sent to work on vessel refits at other shipyards.

The Hamburg shipyard is also famous as the world's leading shipbuilder of mega-yachts. Here were constructed the world's ever largest yachts, owned by billionaires, businessmen and sovereign states. The list of private mega-yachts constructed here features (in brackets are shown LOA length and shipowner's name):

Cruise passengers do not have to go far between city and ship. A whole four terminals are reserved on the Elbe for cruise liners and passengers. For big maritime events or multiple calls, the jetty at the Überseebrücke is also used as a mooring point for cruise ships.

The diverse infrastructure enables a high degree of flexibility and the parallel check-in of multiple ships. In Hamburg, these can make use of innovative technologies and draw their electricity for on-board operations from shore with low emissions during their layover times. In addition to Altona, where a system has already been in place since 2016, Hamburg is also equipping its other two cruise terminals with shore power systems. These will be commissioned by 2024 at the latest.

Terminal opening times

The passenger halls and their catering facilities can only be accessed during mooring and casting-off times. Opening times are based on individual agreements with the cruise liners. Exceptions are public events.

Please note that short-term parking spaces at the terminals are also closed once the ships have cast off.

Parking & Shuttle Service

The Holzhafen parking garage is located near the Cruise Center Altona. It is open 24 hours and offers special rates for cruise customers if the parking ticket is obtained online in advance via the pre-booking platform. A service fee applies to each booking.  to the offer

Valet Parking

The shuttle service to the terminal is included on booking a parking space. Besides valet parking (handover at the terminal), the company offers enclosed outdoor and hall spaces with CCTV. The service also includes transfers and hotel bookings before and after the cruise. Book online and pay in advance and save check-in time.  to the offer

Baggage Transfer and Storage

Passengers will find precise baggage transfer information and times in their travel documents. Unfortunately, there is no opportunity for baggage storage at the cruise terminals. Public lockers are available at the central railway station as well as at the Hamburg-Altona and Hamburg-Dammtor long-distance railway stations.

Even if the suitcase has wheels and the routes are easy to travel, journeys are more carefree without heavy baggage. TEfra Travel Logistics GmbH is a partner to leading cruise liners and specialises in baggage transport worldwide. Suitcases are collected from customers’ homes on an agreed date and brought to the passenger cabin. On return, the suitcase is transported from the ship back home.

A cruise ship dancer from the Big Apple has been arrested in Florida for allegedly possessing and distributing child sex abuse material — with victims as young as 2 years old engaged in sexual acts with adults.

Jamaal Wade, 26, of Washington Heights, was arrested by US Marshals in Broward County on Sunday and charged with receipt, possession and distribution of child porn, WPLG reported .

It was not immediately clear if the arrest was made before or after a cruise.

“Wade distributed files containing sexually explicit images of minors from/on a computer in New York, New York via the Telegram messaging application,” states a complaint filed by the Southern District Court of New York obtained by The Post.

The victims were described as “prepubescent minors and minors who had not attained 12 years of age.”

cruise lines in hamburg

An investigation was launched in October after federal agents seized the phone of a user of the messaging app Telegram. Wade allegedly sent that person child sexual abuse material depicting victims as young as 2.

The recipient told authorities he had gone to Wade’s Manhattan apartment to view the illicit material with him. He “also provided the username of an Instagram account used by Jamaal,” the filing says.

In January, the person sent the covert FBI employee eight videos “depicting male children between the ages of approximately four and eight years old engaged in sexual activities, including oral and anal penetration, with adult males,” it adds.

Jamaal Wade

Wade also told the man he had been arrested in Detroit for conduct “while on tour.”

Detroit police records confirmed that he was arrested on Feb. 18, 2020, after being accused of molesting an 11-year-old boy. It was unclear whether he was convicted.

The suspect has allegedly admitted in online chats to molesting a boy while “on tour with a performance group.”

Jamaal Wade

During the probe, a federal agent began chatting with Wade, who sent them several videos of young boys being raped and sexually abused, according to the court filing.

He also mentioned working on cruise ships as a dancer, though the document does not mention which company.

But in a 2020 profile posted by a staffing site , Jamaal Wade is described as having worked for both Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Lines, as well as on stage.

Jamaal Wade

In a March 22 chat, Wade reportedly told the FBI agent that he had “brought his ‘collection’” of child sexual abuse material “on board the ship.”

He was charged with one count of receipt and distribution of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography.

He could face up to 20 years behind bars on each count if convicted.

As of Tuesday, Wade remained in the Paul Rein Detention Facility in Pompano Beach awaiting extradition to Manhattan, WPLG reported.

The Beautiful History Of Cruises Over Time

Posted: January 7, 2024 | Last updated: January 7, 2024

From the earliest transatlantic voyages and golden-age ships to today's glittering juggernauts, we reveal 32 nostalgic images that chronicle cruise history.

Sailing through time

Before passengers began taking to the high seas, now-famous cruise lines principally operated as mail-shipping services. P&O, then the Peninsular Steam Navigation Company, won a contract to deliver mail to the Iberian Peninsula in 1837, a milestone event that would pave the way for commercial travel by ocean. The Black Ball Line, whose ships carried both passengers and mail, also became the first line to schedule a regular trans-Atlantic service. A Black Ball ship is pictured here in 1833.

1830s: the very beginnings

In the first half of the 19th century, most people crossed oceans for business rather than leisure – nevertheless, P&O is credited with launching the first pleasure cruises in this era. Boats bound for the Mediterranean struck out from England in 1844, with on-board passengers dreaming of sun, sand and sea. Pictured here is the P&O passenger liner SS Deccan sailing from Southampton a little later in 1870.

1840s: the first pleasure cruises

This decade also saw some of the biggest names in cruising sail onto the scene. The Cunard Line was founded in 1840, boasting an impressive fleet of steam-powered ships and whisking the likes of Charles Dickens to destinations such as Boston. Pictured here, in 1848, is Europa, one of Cunard's early Atlantic ships. The White Star Line, the operator of the famously ill-fated Titanic, was also founded in 1845.

1840s: a landmark in cruise-line history

Passenger cruising continued to develop through the mid-19th century, with luxuries like on-board lounges and simple entertainment emerging. Shown here, in 1856, is Cunard's RMS Persia, one of the largest ships of her time and an early Blue Riband winner (an award given for high-speed Atlantic crossings).

Business and pleasure weren't the only reasons for taking to the waves, though – in the 1870s, European immigrants were traveling to America in great numbers. Lines like the Holland America Line, launched in 1873, became famous for transporting great waves of people searching for a new life in the New World. This fun advert for the company dates to 1898.

1870s: the New World

In the 1880s, now well-established names like Cunard and P&O continued to make waves. Launched in 1881, and pictured here in 1899, SS Servia was the first Cunard passenger ship to function with electric lighting. To many, she represents an early model of today's modern liners.

1880s: lighting up the ocean

By the end of the 19th century, passenger cruise ships had become an exercise in luxury, with Cunard tipping its liners as "floating palaces". Offerings from competitors like P&O were just as lavish: this 1892 snap shows an opulent smoking room on P&O's Himalaya ship. Notice the plush booths, dark carved wood and intricate ceiling reliefs.

1890s: “floating palaces”

The period from the 1900s to the end of the 1930s is what many consider cruising’s golden age. By this point, the journey had become as important as the destination and passengers would don their finery to take to the seas for weeks on end. Here the Duke and Duchess of Marlborough relax on the deck of P&O's Arabia, en route to Mumbai in 1902.

1900s: entering cruising’s golden age

<p>At the turn of the century, there was still a frisson around cruising and large, buzzy crowds would often gather to see off the ships. This nostalgic photograph was snapped between 1900 and 1915, and shows large steam boats leaving from the White Star Line dock in Detroit, Michigan. Well-dressed passengers fill the ships' upper and lower decks too. <a href="https://www.loveexploring.com/galleries/67628/where-planes-trains-cruise-ships-and-automobiles-go-to-die?page=1">Discover where planes, trains, cruise ships and cars go to die here</a>.</p>

By the 1900s, passenger cruise services were nothing new. But the Prinzessin Victoria Luise (pictured) – a glamorous ship pioneered by the Hamburg America Line – is generally touted as the first purpose-built cruise ship. Launched in the summer of 1900, she was a grand ship with an ornately decorated bow and lavish interiors complete with luxurious first-class cabins. She came out of service in 1906 when she ran aground.

Many early 20th-century cruise ships had plenty of luxury amenities, but the entertainment on offer was a far cry from the glitzy shows and hi-tech attractions we're used to today. Common pastimes included shuffleboard, dancing and games like tug of war. Captured in 1912, these passengers on Cunard's Franconia enjoy a high-jump contest on deck.

1910s: onboard entertainment

<p>One of the most famous and devastating events in cruise history occurred in this decade. Dubbed "unsinkable" by the White Star Line's vice-president, the Titanic set out from Southampton on her maiden voyage on 10 April 1912 to much applause. But just four days later, she collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic: the compartments in her hull filled with water and she tragically sank. The disaster claimed the lives of more than 1,500 people. <a href="https://www.loveexploring.com/gallerylist/72633/secrets-of-the-titanic-life-onboard-the-worlds-most-famous-ship">Now discover the secrets of life onboard the Titanic</a>.</p>

Just as cruising was enjoying its heyday, the industry entered troubled waters. The First World War halted progress in commercial cruising as attention was turned to the war effort. Many commercial liners were repurposed as military ships – Fred. Olsen, for example, purportedly lost 23 ships to the conflict. This 1918 photograph shows New York City crowds waiting for the return of Cunard's RMS Mauretania, which was carrying American soldiers back home after the war.

1910s: First World War

Still, against the odds, the cruise industry managed to keep its head above water and, post-war, the upper echelons of society took to the seas once more. Here affluent travelers dance on the deck of Cunard's Aquitania in 1922.

1920s: cruising’s golden age continued

In the Roaring Twenties, onboard entertainment was still focused around fun deck games and sports. Here spectators look on in delight as a pair of women take part in a fencing duel aboard Cunard's Berengaria (formerly Hamburg America Line's Imperator). The shot was taken in 1923.

1920s: setting the bar high

Huge dining rooms and bulging buffets are markers of the modern-day cruise and, in the 1920s, dinnertime was equally important. It was typically a grand affair requiring formal dress and involving course after course of fine food. Here, two chefs on Cunard's Aquitania stand before a splendid festive spread – the star is the giant cake in the shape of the ship.

1920s: a festive feast

Another major milestone came in the 1920s: the very first round-the-world cruise. The Cunard Line's RMS Laconia (pictured here leaving Liverpool circa 1920) sailed around the globe in 1922, calling at 22 ports along the way, and taking 450 lucky passengers with her.

The 1930s unfolded in much the same way as the decades previous, as the golden age of cruising continued: think deck games, dinners and dances. The king of all cruise-ship hobbies was shuffleboard, a game that's still often played on modern-day liners. Here, a couple enjoy a game on a cruise to Gibraltar on Cunard's Aquitania in 1932.

1930s: all games on deck

Today mammoth sun-bed-lined swimming pools – often with twirling water slides for kids – are a cruise-ship staple. But in the first half of the 20th century they were much humbler indeed. It's thought that the earliest cruise-ship swimming pool was installed in 1907, on the White Star Line's Adriatic, but they didn't become commonplace until later. Here passengers sunbathe next to a compact swimming pool onboard a Cunard cruise to the West Indies in 1931.

1930s: making a splash

The Second World War was another blow to commercial cruising: yet again, liners were repurposed as war vessels and pleasure cruising came to an abrupt halt. By the end of the decade, though, surviving ships were returned to their lines and put back into service. Slowly but surely, the appetite for cruising grew again. Here an excited crowd welcomes a ship at a Java seaport in the 1940s.

1940s: post-war cruising

<p>Come the 1950s, cruise ships had another phenomenon to compete with: jet planes. Commercial air travel boomed in this decade, with comfier aircraft and improved routes enticing travelers into the skies. Many cruise liners underwent swish post-war refits in an attempt to stay afloat: this 1950s photo shows the opulent dining room of French liner SS Île de France after a dramatic post-war makeover. <a href="https://www.loveexploring.com/galleries/86315/how-air-travel-has-changed-in-every-decade-from-the-1920s?page=1">See how air travel has changed through the decades</a>.</p>

There was one destination that proved particularly popular in the post-war decades, though. After the conflict, many Europeans decided to make a new life Down Under, with millions cruising to Oz on time-honored lines like P&O between the 1940s and the 1970s. P&O ship Oriana is pictured here in Circular Quay, Sydney circa 1950.

1950s: going Down Under

<p>Though formalized in the 1930s, the Blue Riband – the award for the passenger cruise liner with the fastest Atlantic-crossing time – has its roots right back in the 19th century. The record is still held by SS United States of United States Lines, which first sped across the Atlantic in 1952. She's pictured here on 9 July 1952, docking in Southampton. <a href="https://www.loveexploring.com/galleries/103600/vacation-on-mars-what-holidays-could-look-like-in-the-future?page=1">This is what vacations could look like in 2050</a>.</p>

By the 1960s, the Jet Age had well and truly taken hold, and fewer and fewer passengers were choosing to make trans-Atlantic journeys by boat. Still, though, that didn't stop some major players in the cruise world from launching. The decade saw the founding of brands including Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean and Princess Cruises. This vintage 1960s snap shows the already established SS Île de France sailing for the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique.

<p>As flying became more commonplace, the popularity of cruising looked set to dwindle. However, one particular TV series is often credited with keeping travelers' passion for cruising alive. <em>The Love Boat </em>– aired from the 1970s – was a comedy series that followed the crew and passengers of luxury liner SS Pacific Princess. Such was its popularity, some say it brought cruising back into the mainstream once more. This shot shows Cunard Line's Queen Elizabeth 2 in 1975. </p>

By the 1970s, lower costs meant that cruising had opened up to the masses. But the invention of the jumbo jet meant air travel had too, and the latter was the quicker, more convenient choice for traveling overseas. Therefore, the cruise reinvented itself. Ships were no longer marketed as a way to get from A to B, they were destinations in themselves, and the "leisure cruise" was its own phenomena. Here passengers enjoy the deck of P&O's SS Oronsay in 1975.

1970s: cruising opens up to the masses

<p>The 1980s is thought to be the decade that pioneered the "cruise to nowhere", where the ship really was the destination. By the 1990s Disney was spreading a little magic at sea. Disney Magic, a bold ship with black, yellow and red detailing à la Mickey Mouse, made its maiden voyage in 1998. It's pictured here that same year, cruising through Venice, and is still sailing today, complete with a spa, pools and plenty of shops and themed dining rooms.

Cruise ships continued to expand in the 2010s while cruising itself became the fastest-growing category in the leisure travel market. Royal Caribbean’s Symphony of the Seas (pictured here) launched in 2018 as the largest cruise ship in the world (until 2022). The tide began to turn on sustainability, with several cruise ships built to run on liquefied natural gas and battery power. Another health-based factor was reducing onboard smoking to selected areas only.

Eight passengers stranded on African island after Norwegian cruise ship left without them

A dream cruise vacation has turned into a nightmare for eight passengers left stranded on the African island of São Tomé and Príncipe after their ship left without them because they were late to return from a private tour.

The tourists — six from the U.S. and two from Australia — were aboard the Norwegian Dawn, a Norwegian cruise line ship , which departed from Cape Town, South Africa, on March 20 for a 21-day voyage up the coast of Africa set to end in Barcelona, Spain, on April 10.

But on Wednesday, the group of eight tourists was late to return to the ship by more than an hour for the all-aboard time of 3 p.m. from a private excursion on the island, which was not organized by the cruise line.

Jay and Jill Campbell of South Carolina were part of the group that was left behind.

They said that their tour’s operator notified the cruise captain that they were going to be late to rejoin the ship and that the local Coast Guard tried to get them on the vessel but that they weren’t allowed to board.

As a result, the couple and the rest of the group have been stranded for days on the island off Nigeria, grappling with language, currency issues and complicated travel to catch up with the ship.

“The lovely people of São Tomé were very gracious, very hospitable. They had reached out as much as they could to help us find hotels,” Jay Campbell said on NBC's "TODAY" show Tuesday morning.

“We were able to get to a tour agency there to arrange flights to the next port of call. ... Very difficult process — you’re dealing with multiple languages, language barriers, you’re dealing with different currencies ... finding someone that even has dollars ... trying to get an agent to understand where we need to get to.

"It’s one of those ‘You can’t get there from here,’" he added.

A Norwegian spokesperson called the incident a “very unfortunate situation” and said, “Guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time.”

The cruise line said that after the guests failed to return, their passports were delivered to local port agents, in line with protocol. The company said it was working with local authorities to understand “the requirements and visas needed for the guests to reboard the ship at the next available port of call.”

On Monday, the guests had made arrangements to rejoin the ship in Banjul, Gambia, but the ship was unable to safely dock there because of “adverse weather conditions” and “tidal restrictions,” Norwegian said. The guests were then contacted and provided with information to rejoin the ship at Dakar, Senegal, on Tuesday.

Jill Campbell said they traveled through seven countries in 48 hours to arrive in Senegal on Monday night.

But the couple was reconsidering whether they even wanted to return to the cruise.

"We are considering whether or not we are going to board the ship. It is in dock here in Senegal," she said. "We believe there was a basic duty of care that they had forgotten about, so it does concern us."

"After what we witnessed, we truly believe that although there’s a set of rules or policies that the ship may have followed, they followed those rules too rigidly. I believe that they really forgot that they are people working in the hospitality industry and really the safety and well-being of the customers should be their first priority," she added.

Ultimately, the eight passengers did rejoin the cruise before 8:30 a.m. ET Tuesday in Dakar, Senegal, Norwegian told NBC News in an e-mail Tuesday evening, after this story originally published.

Norwegian said the passengers were responsible for making their own travel arrangements to rejoin the ship.

"Despite the series of unfortunate events outside of our control, we will be reimbursing these eight guests for their travel costs from Banjur, Gambia to Dakar, Senegal," a cruise line spokesperson said in a statement. "We remain in communication with the guests and are providing additional information as it becomes available."

A silver lining of the catastrophe was that the Campbells were able to connect with another Norwegian Dawn passenger — Julia Lenkoff, 80 — who was also left on the island, but for a medical reason.

Lenkoff was on a different day tour Wednesday. She had "medically disembarked" from the cruise to seek local treatment on that day, Norwegian said.

Norwegian said that its care team tried to call Lenkoff several times and was unable to reach her and that it worked with its port agent in São Tomé and Príncipe for updates on her health.

The Campbells met Lenkoff and were able to put her in contact with her family in California, who flew her home — a move Lenkoff's daughter said "saved her life."

"She's a world traveler. She travels all the time. So this was going to be one of her bucket list trips, because she's been to 120 countries so far, and she wanted to get to 130," her daughter, Lana Lenkoff Geis, said in an interview that aired Tuesday on "TODAY."

Norwegian said Lenkoff was escorted on a flight to Lisbon, Portugal, then put in the care of airport staff members to continue her journey back to the U.S., where she has safely returned.

  • Julie Lenkoff had a stroke during a Norwegian cruise-sponsored tour on an African island, her son-in-law said.
  • The cruise continued sailing, and the tour company said they left her with other stranded cruisers.
  • The family said Norwegian failed to contact them while Lenkoff was abroad. They used an AirTag to track her journey home.

Insider Today

It wasn't a surprise to Julie Lenkoff's family that she was going on another cruise.

The 80-year-old has visited 120 countries, speaks 10 languages, and has been on countless cruises. Lenkoff is an experienced traveler, so no one batted an eye when she boarded a 21-day Norwegian cruise along the coast of Africa by herself on March 20, Kurt Gies, Lenkoff's son-in-law, told Business Insider.

But her family was shocked when another cruise passenger phoned Lenkoff's daughter, Lana Gies, to tell her they were with Lenkoff, Kurt said. She had been released from a hospital, could hardly speak, was losing her vision, and was on the African island of São Tomé and Príncipe.

Kurt told BI Lenkoff had a stroke during a cruise-sponsored excursion and that the tour operator and cruise company left her at a hospital, where she was later discharged and left to figure out her own way home.

Kurt said a group of stranded tourists helped Lenkoff return to the US, where she remains in serious condition at the Stanford Medical Center.

"We had the means, the technology, and the ability to navigate this massive network to get her home," Kurt said. "I can only imagine if a family didn't or if that person was truly by themselves. What would've happened?"

The family says they have other stranded cruisers to thank for Lenkoff's return

On March 27, day eight of the Norwegian cruise, passengers disembarked the ship to explore São Tomé and Príncipe.

Kurt said Lenkoff joined a cruise-sponsored excursion with the tour company Navetur Equatour. During the tour, she passed out and fell, Diogo Beirão, the chief operating officer of the tour company, confirmed to BI. When Lenkoff regained consciousness, he said she couldn't speak English and had lost feeling in the right side of her body.

At the time, Beirão said the main concern was if Lenkoff had broken a bone or experienced a concussion. Kurt said doctors in the US later confirmed that Lenkoff had a stroke.

Beirão told BI that his tour guides brought Lenkoff back to the dock, where he says a nurse from the Norwegian cruise evaluated her on the pier.

In a statement sent to BI, a Norwegian cruise representative said that "on March 27, 2024, an 80-year-old woman was medically disembarked after being evaluated by our onboard medical team, who thought it best that she receive further assessment and treatment as needed from a local hospital."

Beirão said Lenkoff was transported to the closest hospital, which was "not very comfortable" because it "had no private rooms, just curtains." However, Beirão said he believes it was the right decision not to let her reboard the cruise.

Kurt said Norwegian brought Lenkoff the belongings from her room; however, her credit cards and cash were lost. He added that the tour company later found the missing wallet in a tour van, which was brought to Lenkoff more than 24 hours after she was released from the hospital.

Kurt said he and the rest of Lenkoff's family had no idea this was happening since Norwegian hadn't contacted them.

Meanwhile, a group of eight people were on a separate, private tour of São Tomé and Príncipe. BI previously reported that the tour ran into issues, and the group missed the ship's boarding deadline .

The group was stranded on the island without cash or medications and with one working credit card, which passengers Jill and Jay Campbell owned. The group found a hotel, contacted the closest American consulate, and planned to meet the ship at its next port in the Gambia.

As all this was happening, Kurt said, Lenkoff was released from the hospital.

Beirão said he was unaware that Lenkoff had a stroke, but he visited her at the hospital, and "she was not totally functional" but "could speak very well." While Lenkoff could communicate, Beirão said she often forgot what she was trying to say mid-sentence.

In Norwegian's statement, the representative said: "We attempted to call the guest several times, and as we were unable to reach her, we worked directly with our port agent in São Tomé and Príncipe, an African island nation, to receive updates about the guest."

"In instances such as these," the statement continued, "as the guest was released from the hospital and in a coherent state, our protocol is to contact the guest directly, as we would not have the authority to share any medical details with anyone else without their expressed consent."

Kurt said there are no phone or WhatsApp records of Norwegian reaching out on her cellphone, and he believes that family members should've been contacted in this instance since the company could not reach Lenkoff to confirm she was in a coherent state.

After being discharged, Kurt said the tour company connected the Americans with Lenkoff.

"You have people figuring out how they're getting off this island, and they're given the responsibility to take care of an 80-year-old woman who just had a stroke," Kurt said.

At the time, Lenkoff had no way to pay for anything, so the Campbells provided Lenkoff with food and a place to sleep, Kurt said.

"I truly believe sometimes we're put in certain places for a reason, and I believe we were put in this place for the 80-year-old woman who was left alone. God forbid what would have happened to that lady if we were not here," Jay Campbell told North Carolina's WRAL .

Kurt said Lenkoff was still having trouble speaking and had started to lose her vision.

Using Lenkoff's phone, Jill Campbell called Lenkoff's daughter to tell her what happened. Around the same time, the American consulate called, though Kurt said the family was unsure how the consulate learned about Lenkoff's state.

Kurt said he and Lana attempted to reach Norwegian multiple times but couldn't connect with anyone at the company.

"It was decided that we need to get Julie off that island," he said. "No one at Norwegian was going to take responsibility for it."

The Norwegian representative told BI Lenkoff had been "escorted on a flight to Lisbon, Portugal, and then put in the care of airport staff to continue her journey to the United States, where she has now made a safe return."

Kurt said all of Lenkoff's travel arrangements were "made by her family" and that it wasn't Norwegian who escorted her, adding that the "airlines took responsibility for ensuring she got safely on each plane segment during her journey home."

He said Lenkoff flew to Lisbon, then to Toronto, and finally to San Francisco.

Thankfully, he said, Lana had sent her mom with an Apple AirTag so the family could watch Lenkoff make the trip back to the US.

The Apple product has become popular for tracking everything from missing suitcases to lost golfing equipment and a magician's sound equipment . Some parents are even using them to keep track of their children . According to Benzinga , Apple sold $1 billion worth of Airtags within two years of releasing the tracking device.

Kurt said he and Lana used the AirTag to follow Lenkoff in Lisbon as she reached her next gate.

"We were able to track her movement across the world as she was coming home, and that was a huge relief for us," he said.

Once Lenkoff arrived in California, Kurt said she was medically evacuated to the Stanford Medical Center.

"They pull her out on a gurney and this huge smile comes across her face as she sees her daughter for the first time," he told BI.

Today, Lenkoff is in critical condition

Since arriving at the hospital in California, Kurt told BI that Lenkoff has undergone numerous tests and scans. He said doctors believe she may have also had a heart attack, and while she was at the Stanford Medical Center, she experienced a second stroke.

Kurt said Lenkoff remains in a serious condition.

Meanwhile, the Gieses have continued to try to reach Norwegian. Kurt said two junior staffers have reached out to learn more about what happened, but he said no one from the cruise line had taken responsibility for not contacting Lenkoff's emergency contacts.

Kurt said the experience has taught him and his family that they should not rely on cruise companies to keep passengers safe.

Kurt heard from the Campbells that the group made it back on the ship on Wednesday. When everyone is healthy and back in the US, he said they plan to meet with the Campbells to thank them.

"We truly believe that our mother would've died had she been left to her own devices," Kurt said. "The Campbells are now members of our family. They are the true heroes of this story."
