Alaska Cruise In September: Weather, Tips, Prices

Sapphire Princess in Alaska in September

Taking an Alaska cruise in September is considered the end of the season. However, did you know Norwegian Cruise Line offers itineraries into the third week of October?

If you’re trying to decide on the best month to cruise to Alaska and thought about taking an end of the season cruise, you’ve come to the right place.

In this article, you’ll discover what to expect of Alaska’s weather, the pros, and cons of a late season cruise, and if it’s suited to you.

Traditionally, the Alaskan cruise season ran from May to September. They can’t run in winter due to weather and ice.

Although since the pandemic, some lines offer cruises as early as late April, and Norwegian offers cruises from Seattle until almost November.

Pricing An Alaska Cruise in September

For many, the summer months, when the kids are out of school, is the best time to travel due to warmer weather. However, you’ll pay the highest prices for a cruise to Alaska during peak season.

After Labor Day, the prices drop, as cruises don’t fit into a traveler’s desired travel window.

As September progresses, the cruises get cheaper, and it’s possible to find one at rock-bottom prices by the end of the month. So, you could find a 7-day cruise from USD 300 to 500 per person, plus taxes and fees.

So, when shopping for the best Alaska cruise, consider one in the shoulder season if you want to save money and enjoy fewer crowds. Both May Alaska cruise itineraries and those in September are considered the shoulder season.

If you’ll willing to take an Alaska cruise in October, you’ll benefit from great deals, ships sailing with empty cabins, and fewer cruise passengers in port.

While you can cruise later in the year, it’s important to note you can’t do a cruise and land tour after mid-September.

When Do Cruises Stop Sailing To Alaska?

With each passing year, some cruise lines are pushing the envelope of expanding the Alaska cruise season. For 2023, the last cruise from San Francisco leaves September 14th (Ruby Princess).

The Holland America Koningsdam takes the last sailing in Vancouver for 2023 on September 30th.

Itineraries from Seattle run much longer. In 2023, the Norwegian Bliss makes its last sailing on October 21st, followed by the Norwegian Encore the following day.

Although, since the Norwegian Sun offers a 10-day itinerary, it completes the last Alaska cruise on October 30th.

In 2024, Norwegian moved its last cruise forward to October 19th, which may signify its unpopularity.

What’s The Weather Like In September?

Being the shoulder season, you should expect colder and wetter weather on a September Alaska cruise. If you’re from Canada, Colorado, or cooler destinations, you’ll easily acclimate to the temperature.

An overcast day in Ketchikan

However, folks from Florida, Texas, and warmer states may not adapt well to Alaska’s unpredictable forecast, especially in late September.

Weather varies by region and will get colder the further north you go. In Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, and southeast Alaska towns, expect average temperatures of 54F and lows of 43F. These ports, on average, experience 22 days of rain in September.

Further north, Anchorage, Seward, and Whittier have cooler nights of 40F but fall to 30F at the end of the month. However, the northern area benefits from less rain, with 15 wet days a month.

Here are the averages temperatures and rainfall for mid-September.

As you can see, Ketchikan, Alaska’s southernmost city, experiences the warmest temperatures but the most rain. By October, the rainfall increases to almost 20″, contrasting the five inches of precipitation in late June.

Since you’ll spend the bulk of your cruise in southeast Alaska, those wet days may put a damper on your shore excursions.

What To Pack For A September Alaska Cruise?

With an average of 8 dry days in September, you’ll need to pack for the wet weather. In theory, you could experience rain every day of your cruise, which speaks to Alaska’s unpredictability regarding weather.

Brian wearing his Vessi shoes in water at Mendenhall Glacier

Select jackets, backpacks, and waterproof shoes, not water-resistant. Our favorite Vessi runners are 100% waterproof, vegan, washable, and lightweight.

We walked through many rivers in Alaska and returned to our ship with dry socks and feet. We did a 3-1/2-hour outdoor excursion in the pouring rain in Juneau, but we stayed cozy and dry thanks to our waterproof shoes and Columbia jackets.

Columbia 3-in-1 jackets provide waterproofing and can be worn in various weather. The inner layer provides warmth, the outer shell is waterproof, and worn together, they make the ideal coat for very cold and wet conditions.

Layers are important, from base layer ski tops and bottoms, especially on glacier viewing day. Select items that are fast drying and moisture wicking. Hats and gloves are a must too.

Wearing a waterproof Columbia jacket and Vessi shoes

While most cruise ships have comfortable temperatures, some areas may be cold. So, pack a few sweaters, fleece, sweats, and overlay wraps to cut the chill during dinner or theater shows.

Alaska cruises are more casual than other warmer destinations. So, think about comfort and warmth when packing for this itinerary.

If you plan to do any hiking, boots with ankle support are recommended, and you should expect muddy conditions.

A waterproof backpack and compact umbrella are recommended if you plan to explore ports on a wet day. Excursions onto glaciers, such as dog sledding and glacier walks require an extra layer of warmth.

Some tour operators provide snow pants and glacier boots (wore over your shoes), so check with your excursion provider first.

Benefits Of A Late Season Alaska Cruise

Icebergs at Mendenhall Glacier

Here are the major reasons to take a cruise to Alaska in September or even October:

1. Price – You’ll probably score a great deal on your cruise. Since most guests avoid the cold weather, cruise lines struggle to fill cruises, especially in the later weeks.

With better pricing, you could get a suite or a higher category of stateroom, which would otherwise be unaffordable.

Cruises at the start of the season in April and May also offer discounted rates. If you choose to go then, you’ll benefit from drier weather.

2. Better cabin choice – With cruises not sold out, you’ll have a better pick of staterooms. While that may not matter to some, if you’re cruising with family and want adjoining rooms, that won’t happen on near sold-out cruises in the summer months.

3. Fewer Crowds – As ships start repositioning to other areas, you’ll enjoy ports with fewer people. With fewer visitors, getting a taxi or rideshare will be easier, should you need one.

4. End of season sales – Some stores in Alaska only operate for Alaska cruise season. As the season winds down, you can load up on gifts from Alaska for family and friends. Expect to get some items at a 50% discounted price.

5. Snow – As the month progresses, the chances of snow increase at higher elevations. With clear skies, you could see mountains frosted with snow, giving the landscape a majestic appearance.

Northern lights in Alaska

6. Aurora Borealis – Maybe the biggest appeal of cruising late in the season is the increased chance of seeing the Northern Lights. A bucket list event, some people plan their Alaska cruise for a chance to see the colorful light show.

While you’re never guaranteed to see the aurora, the shorter daylight hours provide for darkened nights, a requirement to see the northern lights.

7. You may get upgraded – With ships sailing with empty cabins, you could get upgraded. While some lines give complimentary upgrades, others offer a chance to bid on an upgrade.

8. Better itinerary – Once cruise ships leave Alaska, it opens up areas for other vessels to cruise. You could visit Glacier Bay National Park or stay longer in port towns.

Some cruises in the shoulder season visit more than one glacier. I’ve done several 7-day roundtrip cruises from Vancouver that visited both Tracy Arm Fjord and Hubbard Glacier, or Glacier Bay and Hubbard Glacier.

While this itinerary is common on one-way cruises, they are rare on roundtrip ones.

The Cons Of Going to Alaska In September

A September cruise might be a must for some, just for the opportunity to see the aurora borealis. However, here are some reasons others may not like a to go in shoulder season.

1. Weather – With an average of 22 days of rain, a September cruise will contrast greatly with being in the Caribbean. Believe it or not, some people like the rain and find it soothing.

Cruising later in the season may not be the best choice if you’re not a fan of damp weather.

A rainy day in Tracy Arm Fjord

2. Tours may be unavailable – Certain tour operators close down early in September. So, if your heart is set on dog sledding on a glacier, this may not be the best month to take an Alaska cruise.

Helicopter tours close shop early as bad weather affects their ability to take off and fly safely. Large boat tours such as the Misty Fjords Explorer and the Bering Sea Crab Fishermen’s Tours also stop offering excursions by mid-September.

3. Diminished wildlife sightings – The great humpback whale migration begins in early September. As humpback whales head south, your chances of seeing whales diminish, especially in the second half of the month.

Salmon runs have ceased, and bear sightings become a rare occurrence. As the summer season ends, black bears and brown bears move to higher ground in preparation for winter hibernation.

If wildlife sightings are high on your Alaska bucket list, forego a September Alaska cruise. By going a month earlier, you’ll have better opportunities for whale watching, seeing other marine life, and bear sightings.

4. You can’t do a land tour – Denali National Park and tours in Denali typically close for visitors around mid-September.

Even if you went to Denali in early September, the weather may prevent you from traveling too far. With gloomy overcast weather, your chances of seeing the towering Denali are slim.

However, you’ll witness the change of the seasons with fall colors and winter fast approaching.

A wet day in Endicott Arm

5. Weather may affect glacier viewing – With dark clouds and rainy weather, glacier viewing day won’t be the glorious event you’ve anticipated. In fact, standing on the deck for long periods of time may be out of the question.

If fjords are fog ladened, your vessel may not even attempt to cruise through the narrow passage. Endicott Arm and Tracy Arm Fjord often experience fog, even in warmer months. If your cruise skips the fjord, you’ll likely have a longer day in Juneau, the capital.

Is September Too Late To Take An Alaska Cruise?

Even with bad weather conditions, some cruise guests love to go in the fall for the chance to see the northern lights. Ships often sail with empty rooms allowing them to enjoy onboard venues with fewer people.

If you’re the only ship in port on embarkation day, expect a faster boarding experience.

If you’re been to Alaska before and prefer to skip shore excursions, taking a shoulder season cruise allows you to save money and savor the experience of being at sea on a luxury cruise ship.

However, if you plan your bucket list cruise to Alaska and visit once, pass on the discounted late-season cruises and choose a warmer month instead.

While you’ll pay more, you won’t be battling the weather or have to dress up like the Michelin Tire mascot to stay warm. You’ll also be able to take the excursions you want without the risk of them closing down for the season (providing you book enough enough).

Finding the right Alaska cruise and time to go depends on your preferences. If it’s your only time to Alaska, you want to pick a time to enjoy that bucket list shore excursion. Also, you might want to try to “do it all,” if that’s even possible.

However, if you’re returning to Alaska for the umpteenth time, picking a cheap time to go may be your priority. If lines drop their cruise fares on unsold cabins on a September sailing, it may be too tempting not to go.

Whether you choose to cruise in September or not, Alaska rarely disappoints, even when the weather rains on your parade.

The 9 best northern lights alaska cruises for 2024 & beyond.

Consider one of these trips for a chance to see this mesmerizing natural wonder.

The Best Northern Lights Alaska Cruises

Northern lights over Alaska landscape.

Getty Images

There's no other experience on Earth quite like witnessing the northern lights. Also known as the aurora borealis, this spellbinding phenomenon – when brilliant hues of green, yellow and purple dance across the night sky – is visible in Alaska from late August to late April. Clear, dark evenings away from the ambient light of cities provide prime viewing opportunities.

Alaska is one of the best places in the world to see the aurora borealis – especially locations in the Interior and Arctic regions, such as Coldfoot, Wiseman, Utqiagvik (Barrow) and Nome. Fairbanks is regarded as a top location due to its position directly under the auroral oval, a ring-shaped area in the far north where aurora activity is generally concentrated. The Southcentral region of Alaska, where you'll find Anchorage, Talkeetna and the Mat-Su Valley, also offers basecamps for northern lights viewing.

If you're hoping to see the magic aboard an Alaska cruise in 2024 or 2025, then you just might be in luck. Experts predict the next few seasons will be particularly good for northern lights sightings, due to increased solar activity. While seeing the northern lights is never guaranteed, your best chance of seeing them is during these high-activity solar cycles, which occur about every 11 years.

Find your perfect cruise

When to take a cruise to view the northern lights

The Alaska cruise season falls between May and September, with a few cruise lines extending the season from April to October.

Holland America Line recommends booking a cruise or cruisetour (a combined sea and land package) during the autumnal equinox, or the official start of autumn, which falls around Sept. 22 in the Northern Hemisphere. Disturbances in the Earth's magnetic field are more likely around the autumn and spring equinoxes, which could increase your chances of seeing the aurora. For the best views, Holland America advises heading to higher ground in Anchorage , to vantage points like Glen Alps, the Knit River Valley and Point Woronzof.

Princess Cruises also suggests booking your vacation in the fall. September is an ideal month to watch for the spectacle in the sky as the nights start getting longer and darker. The elusive display is most likely to appear on crystal-clear evenings between midnight and 4 a.m. While you can see incredible light shows in Anchorage, consider an extended tour of Fairbanks or the Interior that takes you away from light pollution (such as to Denali National Park & Preserve).

U.S. News has compiled a list of the nine best cruises and cruisetours to give you the optimal chance of viewing these whimsical lights in the sky, with a focus on sailings around the autumnal equinox in 2024 and later dates in September 2025. We've also included an early sailing in April, before the end of the aurora season. (Keep in mind: Many of these trips and itineraries are also available on other dates during the season. Cruise fares were accurate at the time of publication.)

This nine-day land and sea tour on Nieuw Amsterdam includes an opportunity to search for the northern lights in Fairbanks, one of the best places to see them in Alaska (and in the world). Holland America offers a four-hour aurora borealis viewing tour outside the city in a yurt; it operates between the last week of August and mid-September.

If you'd like more options, there's no shortage of tour operators in town that can take you on a northern lights adventure in Fairbanks. You can even fly into town early to stay in the wilderness in an igloo with clear views of the night sky at Borealis Basecamp, located less than 30 miles from Fairbanks. Be sure to notify your hotel that you'd like a wake-up call or a knock on the door if the northern lights are on display.

You'll have more opportunities to see the aurora when you head to Denali National Park & Preserve for a stay at Holland America 's exclusive 60-acre McKinley Chalet Resort, located near the entrance to the park. After a full day exploring the park by ATV or a bucket list flightseeing adventure over Denali, you'll have another chance to see the colorful light display in Alaska's wilderness after midnight. The rest of the cruisetour itinerary includes scenic cruising days, with one spent in beautiful Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve. You'll also call on Juneau , Skagway and Ketchikan before disembarking in Vancouver .

14-Day Denali: Tour D3c

This 14-day adventure includes scenic cruising of the Inside Passage, Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and College Fjord, with stops in the ports of Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, Whittier and Seward. You'll then have nearly a week on land in Anchorage, Denali National Park & Preserve and Fairbanks to go aurora hunting. If you spend an extra night or two in Fairbanks at the end of the trip, you'll be in town for the autumnal equinox, maximizing your northern lights viewing opportunities.

With the extra time in town, plan to book the Arctic Circle Air Adventure with Northern Alaska Tour Company. This unforgettable journey takes you on a flight over the Yukon River and Brooks Range, just east of the Gates of the Arctic National Park & Preserve. You'll then land 60 miles north of the Arctic Circle in the community of Coldfoot and receive an Arctic Circle Adventure Certificate before your return flight to Fairbanks.

7-Day Glacier Discovery Northbound

If you're interested in a cruise-only option and would prefer to arrange the land portion independently, consider this seven-day voyage on Nieuw Amsterdam. The itinerary includes three scenic cruising days, with one day in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve, and calls on the ports of Ketchikan, Juneau and Skagway before disembarking in Whittier, which sits roughly 60 miles south of Anchorage.

From Whittier, there are many options to transfer to Anchorage (by rail or by road), including the iconic Glacier Discovery Train. Plan to stay a few evenings in Anchorage with a multiday guided aurora tour, or reserve a spot on an evening outing in search of the northern lights.

11-Day Denali Explorer – Tour DA4

This 11-day cruisetour begins with a seven-night voyage embarking from Vancouver on Royal Princess or Sapphire Princess . The itinerary includes three sea days, two of which are dedicated to scenic cruising through Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve and College Fjord. You'll make stops in the coastal towns of Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway and Anchorage (Whittier) before disembarking to depart for the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge via the line's direct-to-the-wilderness rail service.

Spending three nights at the lodge – located just outside the entrance to the park – in mid-September will offer excellent opportunities for aurora viewing. Keep your fingers crossed for high solar activity and clear, dark skies. Throughout your trip, learn photography tips to capture the mesmerizing display through Princess' North to Alaska Program. After your stay in Denali, you'll take a motor coach to Anchorage and stay overnight in a hotel there to finish up your voyage.

10-Day On Your Own – Tour BBX

The 10-Day On Your Own cruisetour with Princess Cruises begins with three nights on land, including overnights in Fairbanks, the Denali Princess Wilderness Lodge and the Mt. McKinley Princess Wilderness Lodge. While at the Mt. McKinley resort, be sure to check out the lodge's treehouse. Designed by Pete Nelson of Animal Planet's "Treehouse Masters," this vantage point offers impressive views of Denali – the highest peak in North America at 20,310 feet above sea level.

Before heading off to bed, get an update on aurora activity from the tracker on your smartphone, especially if you have clear skies that night; the app My Aurora Forecast & Alerts has excellent reviews. Request a wake-up call to have the Princess lodge staff call your room if the dazzling bands of light begin to dance in the sky. The next day, after traveling to Whittier by motor coach, you'll embark on your cruise to Vancouver aboard Royal Princess or Sapphire Princess.

The voyage from Whittier includes three sea days for relaxing activities on board the ship, with two days of scenic cruising around Hubbard Glacier and in Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve. During your time in Glacier Bay, park rangers will board the ship to offer commentary about this captivating wilderness area's pristine glaciers and abundant wildlife. Younger cruisers and teens will also appreciate learning about this spectacular place through the Junior Ranger program, which features interactive games, activities and presentations. (All cruise ships visiting the park participate in this program with the National Park Service.) Ports of call for the rest of the journey include Icy Strait Point or Skagway (depending on the cruise), then Juneau and Ketchikan. The voyage ends in Vancouver.

The Great National Parks Expedition Cruisetour

Celebrity's pre-cruise national parks adventure takes guests on a wildlife viewing quest to destinations in the north and the Interior where you can watch for the aurora. The 12-night trip begins in Fairbanks with a free day to explore.

Consider a trip to the University of Alaska Museum of the North, which features exhibits on Arctic dinosaurs, diverse wildlife, Alaska Native cultures and 2,000 years of Alaska art. You could also visit the impressive collection of antique cars and clothing at the Fountainhead Antique Auto Museum, or take a walk with the reindeer into the woods at Running Reindeer Ranch. The second day in town includes a Riverboat Discovery ride and a tour of the city, as part of the cruisetour.

On the third day, you'll board the Wilderness Express (a glass-domed railcar) for the ride to Denali. Then, you'll embark on the Tundra Wilderness Tour in search of the park's grizzly bears, moose, Dall sheep and other wildlife. Be sure to put your name on the list before bedtime to get a wake-up call for aurora activity. You'll also have one evening in Anchorage, where you can arrange for a northern lights tour, and one night in Seward before setting sail on Celebrity Summit the next morning. Highlights of the voyage include cruising Hubbard Glacier and the Inside Passage as well as stopping in Juneau, Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan. You'll disembark in Vancouver.

13-Day Denali Explorer – Pre-Cruise Cruisetour

Norwegian Cruise Line's six-day pre-cruise adventure begins with overnights in Fairbanks, Denali and Anchorage, where you'll have the best chances to view the northern lights. Other highlights for the first part of the trip include a deluxe dome car rail journey from Talkeetna to Anchorage on the Alaska Railroad and a private tour to an Iditarod sled dog musher's kennel. You'll also have plenty of time in Denali National Park to book a flightseeing tour, go whitewater rafting, or take a hike with a park ranger to look for bears, moose, Dall sheep, wolves and other local wildlife before starting your cruise in Seattle .

Norwegian Encore will call on Juneau, Skagway, Glacier Bay and Ketchikan (Ward Cove) in Alaska. The Mill at Ward Cove near Ketchikan is a newly built cruise ship port that serves as a jumping-off point for outdoor activities in the Tongass National Forest, from hiking and biking to kayaking and sea cycling. You can even pick up souvenirs, grab a bite to eat and sample a cold Alaska brew at the mill. The cruise itinerary also includes one day at sea and a stop in Victoria, British Columbia, before you disembark in Seattle.

7-Night Alaska: Dawes Glacier, Juneau & Ketchikan

Consider this seven-day cruise on Norwegian Bliss if you prefer to travel early in the spring and take your chances at catching the northern lights toward the end of aurora season, which falls around April 21. This round-trip itinerary from Seattle is one of the earliest sailings of the year to visit the Great Land and features two sea days, with one day of scenic cruising in Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier. You'll also visit Sitka, Juneau, Icy Strait Point, Ketchikan (Ward Cove) and Victoria before disembarking in Seattle.

Juneau will offer one of the best opportunities during the cruise for seeing the northern lights, although chances are dependent on the weather and solar activity. There are several apps and websites with real-time updates for aurora tracking, including My Aurora Forecast & Alerts. If the skies are clear in the evening and the forecast looks promising, ask guest relations if there's a sign-up sheet to get a call or a knock on the door in the event of aurora activity.

12 Night Mountain Panorama Adventure Cruisetour 5B (Pre Tour)

This 12-night cruisetour with Royal Caribbean International begins with an overnight in Anchorage before boarding the Wilderness Express, where you'll have a glass-domed rail car for the journey to Talkeetna. The quirky community of Talkeetna is said to be the inspiration for the fictional Alaska town of Cicely in the 1990s show "Northern Exposure." It's also an excellent base for chasing the aurora – especially at the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge, where you'll be staying.

After an overnight at the lodge, your tour moves on to Denali, where you can search for wildlife by day and look for the aurora at night. Another evening on land at Hotel Alyeska in the remote town of Girdwood affords more opportunities to chase the finnicky lights before heading to Seward to board your ship, Radiance of the Seas .

Ports of call on this voyage include Juneau, Skagway, Icy Strait Point and Ketchikan. There are also two days of scenic cruising through Hubbard Glacier and the Inside Passage before disembarking in Vancouver. While there are plenty of activities, dining venues, bars and lounges on board to keep you entertained all night long, be sure to save up enough energy to wake up in the middle of the night should you get a call to see the magical natural wonder that is the northern lights.

The largest tidewater glacier in North America, Hubbard Glacier has been moving its mass towards the ocean at a rate faster than most of its kind. Towering above the water over 30 stories, the glacier often calves 100-foot chunks of ice into the ocean. What lies beneath the waves is almost as impressive, where ice plunges 1,200 feet beneath the surface. See it for yourself on an Alaska cruise with Princess.

Carnival Spirit Sets Sail on 14-Night Cruise to Alaska

  • May 2, 2024

Carnival Spirit

Upon completing a repositioning cruise to the West Coast in late April , the Carnival Spirit started its 2024 summer program in Alaska with a 14-night voyage.

Cruising roundtrip from Seattle, the two-week cruise is part of Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Journeys program and features less usual destinations in the region.

After setting sail on April 23, the itinerary includes visits to Ketchikan, Skagway, Juneau, Icy Strait Point, Valdez and Seward.

Before returning to Seattle, the Carnival Spirit is also set to offer scenic cruising at the Hubbard Glacier and the Tracy Arm Fjord, in addition to making a visit to Victoria, in Canada’s British Columbia.

According to Carnival Cruise Line, the Carnival Journeys are part of a limited series of special sailings “made to amaze passengers.”

The voyages sail to less-traveled routes, the company added, and feature great destinations, as well as enriching experiences onboard and a classic cruising fare.

Continuing its summer program in Alaska and Canada, the Carnival Spirit is set to kick off a series of week-long cruises in the region on May 7.

The ship’s regular itinerary sails roundtrip from Seattle and features visits to Ketchikan, Juneau, Victoria and Skagway.

The seven-night cruises feature scenic cruising at the Tracy Arm Fjord, in addition to one day cruising the Pacific Ocean.

Before completing its summer season in the region, the Carnival Spirit is set to offer a second 14-night cruise to Alaska and Canada on September 10, 2024.

With a similar itinerary, the Carnival Journey will be followed by a 15-night cruise to Hawaii. Also part of the Carnival Journeys program, the itinerary sails roundtrip from Seattle and features a visit to Victoria, Canada.

On October 9, the Spirit wraps up its schedule on the West Coast with a 16-night repositioning cruise to New Orleans ahead of a winter season sailing from Mobile.

Holland America Line Offers New Glacier Guarantee ™ for Alaska Cruises and Cruisetours

Allows guests to sail with confidence, knowing they’re guaranteed to see Alaska glaciers

Seattle, Wash., May 1, 2024 — Holland America Line loves Alaska. Since 1947, the cruise line has led the way in showcasing the majesty of the state — including its magnificent glaciers. In fact, Holland America Line’s passion for Alaska’s glaciers runs so deep that the cruise line now guarantees guests will see one or more glaciers on their cruise in the region.

With guests citing seeing glaciers as one of the top reasons for choosing an Alaska cruise , the Glacier Guarantee ™ assures travelers they won’t return home disappointed. The Glacier Guarantee™ is offered on Alaska departures from now through September 2025. Under the guarantee, if Holland America Line does not visit an Alaska glacier, guests are eligible to receive a Future Cruise Credit equal to 15 percent of their cruise fare.

“Our guests, and especially first-time guests, are understandably as obsessed with Alaska’s glaciers as we are, and our new Glacier Guarantee™ underlines our confidence in providing unforgettable glacier sightings on our Alaska cruises and Cruisetours,” said Kacy Cole, chief marketing officer, Holland America Line. “We know our guests are going to return home from their cruise with special memories of these icy wonders. In fact, we guarantee it.”

Every Alaska cruise includes a scenic visit to Alaska’s iconic glaciers during which the ship sails up to the face of the ice formations and then rotates for a 360-degree view. Holland America Line has more permits to visit Glacier Bay National Park & Preserve than any other cruise line, and other glacier visits including College Fjord, Dawes Glacier, Hubbard Glacier and the Tracy Arm Fjord’s Twin Sawyer Glaciers.

During Glacier Bay scenic cruising, Glacier Bay National Park Service Rangers visit Holland America Line ships for the day to engage with guests and talk about Alaska’s most famous national park.

‘Glacier Day’ Puts a Spotlight on Alaska’s Majestic Glaciers

New for the 2024 season, Holland America Line also debuted “Glacier Day” on its Alaska cruises as part of its "We Love Alaska” onboard experience. Leaning into the cruise line’s enthusiasm for glaciers, Glacier Day includes sighting times, scenic commentary, presentations, informational viewing stations, photo opportunities, Dutch Pea Soup on deck, Glacial Ice cocktails, insightful talks by Glacier Bay National Park Service Rangers, and an open bow for viewing.

More Opportunities to See Alaska Wildlife Than Any Other Cruise Line

In addition to glaciers, Holland America Line offers more ways to see the wildlife of Alaska. Holland America Line carries a wildlife expert on board to help guests witness the majestic animals found in Alaska, including whales, eagles, bears, moose, otters, seals, sea lions and more. A Wildlife Spotting Guide points out the native animals found along the cruise route and includes a map with the best places to see each species. Between 8 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., wildlife sightings are announced for guest viewing.

The wildlife experience continues ashore. With nearly180 animal sanctuaries and sightseeing opportunities, Holland America Line is #1 in Alaska wildlife and wilderness tours.

Alaska Features Six Ships Exploring The Great Land

In 2024 and 2025, guests can embark on Holland America Line’s Alaska cruises and cruisetours aboard Eurodam, Koningsdam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Westerdam and Zaandam. In addition to seven-day itineraries, guests can take longer 14-day voyages and a 28-Day Alaska Arctic Circle Solstice cruise. Holland America Line is the only cruise line that ventures up into the wilds of the Yukon on a cruisetour that combines a cruise and visit to Denali National Park & Preserve.

Holland America Line: The Leader in Alaska Cruising

The new Glacier Guarantee™ program is part of Holland America Line’s initiative to offer the most extensive Alaska experience in the industry. Holland America Line has been exploring Alaska for more than 75 years — longer than any other cruise line —weaving their expertise into every nuance of the journey. We   Alaska is made up of authentic experiences that focus on culture, cuisine and adventures ashore as well as Holland America Line's enrichment and entertainment programming 'Alaska Up Close' .

Voted Number-One Cruise Line in Alaska

Throughout the years, Holland America Line has collected awards and accolades from the world’s most discerning travelers and cruise experts for Alaska cruising. Holland America Line was named the top pick for Alaska in the Porthole Cruise Magazine Editor-in-Chief Awards, AFAR Travelers’ Choice Awards, USA Today 10Best

Readers’ Choice Awards, Forbes, Cruise Critic Cruisers’ Choice Destination Awards and TravelAge West Wave Awards Editor’s Pick.

Under the Glacier Guarantee™, Holland America Line ensures that guests will see at least one glacier or will receive a future cruise credit equal to 15 percent of their cruise fare. The Glacier Guarantee™ is valid on all Alaska cruises and cruisetours except select Yukon cruisetours that feature a three-day cruise experience. For full Glacier Guarantee™ terms and conditions, visit HollandAmerica.com.

You're guaranteed to see a glacier on these Alaska cruises – or you get a credit

cruise to alaska september 2024

Glaciers are a major draw for many Alaska cruise passengers. But on the chance you don’t see one as advertised during your voyage, Holland America Line will give you money back.

The cruise line is adding a Glacier Guarantee for its cruises and cruisetours around the Last Frontier through September 2025. If Holland America doesn’t visit one it planned to, passengers will get a future cruise credit worth 15% of their fare.

"Our guests, and especially first-time guests, are understandably as obsessed with Alaska's glaciers as we are, and our new Glacier Guarantee underlines our confidence in providing unforgettable glacier sightings on our Alaska cruises and Cruisetours," Kacy Cole, the line’s chief marketing officer, said in a news release . "We know our guests are going to return home from their cruise with special memories of these icy wonders. In fact, we guarantee it."

What are the terms of Holland America’s Glacier Guarantee?

The guarantee applies when a visit to a glacier – think scenic cruising to Dawes Glacier – on a published itinerary is canceled, according to its terms and conditions . Guests must be at least 21 years old and complete a form within 30 days of their trip ending in order to claim the credit. Credits are limited to one per guest.

The offer is available to passengers who complete their cruise or cruisetour between May and September of 2024 or 2025.

Northern Lights Promise: If you don't see the northern lights from these cruises, you'll get a free trip

The guarantee will not apply when only one of multiple glacier visits on a cruise or cruisetour has been canceled, and select Yukon cruisetours are ineligible.
