National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation House: Then And Now

Fans of the 1989 movie ‘National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation’ will likely recognize the Grizwold house. However, those who have never seen the movie may still recognize this property. That’s because the National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation house has featured in numerous movies over the years, something we shall discuss later in the article.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation House Lit Up

In the movie, Clark (Chevy Chase) has big plans for a “good, old-fashioned family Christmas.” Both sets of grandparents are coming for Christmas. As well as his Aunt Bethany and Uncle Lewis.  The Griswolds also get a surprise visit from Cousin Catherine (Miriam Flynn) and her moocher husband, Eddie, played by Randy Quaid.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation

While much of the movie takes place inside the property, and you get to see a lot of interior shots throughout the film. As with many Hollywood movies, not everything is quite as it seems.

In the movie, the National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation house is located in a snowy Chicago suburb, however, the true location of the property is on the backlot of the Warner Bros. Ranch facility in Burbank , Los Angeles.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation House Today

The National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation house as it looked in 2019, while much of it looks the same, you can see that some alterations have taken place.

Blondie Street, Burbank, Los Angeles

While the property still stands, much of the interior and exterior have been redecorated. Some alterations have also been made over the past thirty years. This is because the property stands on a street known as ‘Blondie Street’, in a private Warner Bros. compound in Los Angeles. The street, and the dozen or so properties on it, have been used in numerous movies over the years.

This house, in particular, has been used in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, Small Soldiers, American Beauty, Hocus Pocus, and many more. Other houses on ‘Blondie Street’ have been used in movies such as Lethal Weapon (Danny Glover’s houses), Bewitched, Pushing Daisies, and many others.

Update: The house has now also featured in Disney’s/Marvel’s WandaVision. This is the home Wanda and Vision live in.

Blondie Street

Blondie Street as it looks today, the house in the middle was used in National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, while the house to the right was the residence of Robert Murtaugh (Danny Glover) in Lethal Weapon. On the opposite side of the road is a house that featured in Small Soldiers. There are a dozen or so houses on this ‘fake’ street in all, as well as a church and some NY style townhouses.

The same street as seen in Lethal Weapon, with Danny Glover’s house on the left, and the house used in Bewitched on the right.

Small Soldiers

On the opposite side of the road, as seen in the 1998 movie ‘Small Soldiers’, you can also see the house used in Bewitched on the left of the photo, as well as a fake church.

The National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation House As It Looks Now

Back to the National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation house. With much of the movie taking place in the property, we got to see many of the rooms throughout the house. Thankfully some of these rooms still exist in some form or other today. Others having been changed many times over the years and are unrecognizable.

The foyer as it looked in the movie and the same views as the house looks today (below). While the stairs look the same, and the window is in the same place, the room from which this shot was taken has changed somewhat over the years.

National Lampoon House Interior

The staircase has barely changed over the past three decades. New wallpaper and a lick of paint is the only real difference.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation House Staircase In The Movie

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation House Staircase

The same staircase as it looks today.

Much of the rest of the downstairs has since been reconfigured. In the three decades since National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, it has possibly been changed a number of times.

Upstairs is the same, while there are some recognizable areas, such as the landing which still features the same banister, a lot of the upstairs is totally unrecognizable.

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation House Landing In Movie

While there were scenes filmed upstairs, the property has been changed so much it’s impossible to know where. Most of the upstairs is currently a shell, waiting to be remolded for its next movie role.

A Fun Place to Get Your House Fix

The Griswold House in “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation”

front exterior of Clark Griswold\'s house lit up with Christmas lights

In National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation , Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase) gets his wish for a big family Christmas.

When his wife Ellen (Beverly D’Angelo) worries that it might not be quite as perfect as he imagines, he says, “Christmas is about resolving differences and seeing through the petty problems of family life.”

He spends the rest of the movie trying to do just that!

Let’s take a look back at the Griswold family’s home from the movie and how it was decorated for the holidays.

“All my life I’ve wanted to have a big family Christmas.” -Clark Griswold

Christmas Vacation was based on a short story written by John Hughes called “Christmas ’59.”

It was the second Vacation story to be published in National Lampoon’s Magazine (the first was “Vacation ’58,” the basis for the first Vacation movie).

The movie premiered in 1989, and it shows in all of the wallpaper and fabric choices in the house.

The movie was called National Lampoon’s Winter Holiday in the U.K.

When a squirrel gets loose in the house, Clark’s mother faints in the living room and we get a good look at that green carpet:

A sequel may be in the works that would feature Clark and Ellen’s son Rusty as he takes his own children on a vacation.

Johnny Galecki, who played Rusty in this movie, is now all grown up and stars in the popular sitcom The Big Bang Theory .

Eric, who sent me interior photos of the Home Alone house , sent me the scoop on this one, too:

The Griswold house is actually an exterior set on “Blondie Street” on a Warner Brothers back lot in Burbank, CA, as is Todd and Margo’s house (the neighbors next door).

The house has been altered a lot to serve other movies, especially the interiors, which are also only a set, not a real house.

In one of the virtual tours on Warner Bros. website, you can see what appears to be the Griswold foyer set as it looks today (update: sorry, they took down the virtual tour).

I took a snapshot to compare the two.

You can see a photo of the exterior of the house as it looks today on the back lot here .

You can tell it’s the Christmas Vacation house by the two chimneys and the attached garage. Windows and colors and a few other things have been changed, however.

According to the Warner Bros. website, Blondie Street was built to look like a typical suburban neighborhood.

It has also been home to many movies and TV series, including Pleasantville, Bewitched , The Partridge Family, and The Middle .

There are 12 residential homes on the street in a variety of styles.

The photo below shows how the street looked in  Lethal Weapon:

I was hoping you would do this post for the Monday before Christmas. Every Christmas this movie comes on, I am in love with the house. I Especially love that grand staircase.

I sure hope that they don’t make a sequel. Most sequels aren’t as good as the original movies or not very good at all.

I hope they do a sequel and include Chevy and Beverly!!! In fact, it should be about the kids coming home for Christmas.

I ADORE Funny Farm!!! One of the great Christmas movies too. I have a friend from New England, who I finally got to watch Funny Farm and she said that whoever wrote it sure knew what they were writing about when they addressed New Englanders!!!

This is hands down my favourite movie, holidays or otherwise. Christmas Vacation has become part of my holiday tradition, I watch it every year when I decorate my tree. I still laugh everytime and it takes me back through all of the past Christmas’. I can hear the echo of my Dad’s laugh in my mind when Clark kicks the Santa lawn ornaments around in frustration and for years we called my Mom “Sparky” because of her love of outdoor Christmas lights and how you could see a glow in the sky coming from her place, which I found embarrassing in my teen years and since come to appreciate and love. Merry Christmas everybody!! Ellen: “Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be Thy Name. And forgive my husband. He knows not what he does. “

I believe it is because if you look at this video tour: https://www2.warnerbros.com/wbsf/virtualtour.html?virtualtour=blondiestreet , there’s the bewitched house and the yellow dorm window house used in the commercial. It’s the house used in Lethal weapon, just tweaked a little bit. Then click the second video tour and swing to the left. There’s the dorm window house again and next to it is the Christmas vacation house. They tweaked the outside of this house too.

The house was also used in a Beverly Hills 90210 episode. Here’s the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rJUTT38DLAU go to 4:14. The inside is of the house next to it though. You can see it looks pretty much the same as the movie. At some point they changed the outside to what it is in the commercial.

The bewitched house was seen in so many television and movies. I saw it on the t.v. series two and a half man whenthey took the young boy to catch a school bus.

The house in the background of the Geico commercial is not the same house. Very similar though.

The Griswold is the same one used as a backdrop in the Geico commercial. The house has continually been changed for new uses since National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. The house was also used at the end of the Doris Day movie, With Six You Get Eggroll. The house is the one that Doris Day and Brian Keith buy after selling their two separate homes and merging their families into one new house.

This is one of the best sites ever! I LOVED “Xmas Vac”! (sorry for the abbreviations; I’m British and we do that all the time). The Griswolds are the iconic, barmy, Yank family who TRY to do right (well, it’s mostly Clark, innit?), but keep getting it wrong. By the time he’s done with it, the whole bee thing is all sixes & sevenses!

It makes glad that Xmas is NOT as big a “deal” in England as it is in the States. I mean, if we don’t get out to buy the latest Nintendo fad, or whatsit, we won’t go round the bend, thinking we’ve ruined our kids forever. And if we don’t get on with our daft relatives (who DOES?), then it’s no skin off OUR necks; we just say “THEY did it!” and all’s right w/the world.

I LOVE the Todd and Margo characters–SO “Yuppie American Idiot”! And when Clark sends that giant piece of ice thru their window, wrecking that stupid stereo? Brilliant! You couldn’t plan a prank that good!

But, despite Americans thinking (perhaps) that all Brits live in cozy cottages, like “Iris” in “the Holiday”, which weren’t real anyway, and what’s it to ya?…WHY do the houses in America all look the SAME? (at least in John Hughes flicks)? EH? You’ve got your fake, 2-3 story “Colonial” (lol) houses, all in a row, with the same things inside. (Don’t those burglars in “Home Alone” get bored?).

Anyway, despite living in one o’ those, Clark Griswold is QUITE the ‘original’! Props and cheers to him!

This marks the 11th year that the family has covered their home in lights to spread holiday cheer and raise money for charity.

Where is the Griswold House in Wadsworth?

In the movie, the Griswolds lived in Greater Chicago.

The actual house featured in the 1989 movie was built on a Warner Brothers lot in California.

The Wadsworth Griswold House that is lit up nightly through the holidays is situated at 173 Duane Lane.

What are the hours of the Griswold House?

The Wadsworth Griswold House is aglow nightly from the Friday after Thanksgiving to New Year's Day night.

The hours are 5 p.m. to 11 p.m.

What can you expect to see at the Griswold House?

Just like in the "Christmas Vacation" movie, the Wadsworth recreation of the house is sight to behold.

Every inch of the suburban home is covered from roof to foundation with some 250 individual strands of lights — 25,000 individual lightbulbs — along with other props that offer nods to the movie.

A replica of Cousin Eddie's motor home − the real one from the movie is located not too far away at the Castle Noel museum in Medina − is parked nearby along with mannequins recreating memorable scenes from the movie.

What does it cost to visit the Wadsworth Griswold House?

It doesn't cost anything to drive by the Griswold House.

But the family does ask visitors to consider making a donation to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation's Great Strides program.

Homeowner Greg Osterland was diagnosed with the genetic disease when he was 6 years old and wants to help others.

Last year, the family raised some $7,600 for the charity.

And through early sponsorships and donations, they have already raised $4,000 toward a goal of $11,000 this year.

So what does it cost to light up the Wadsworth Griswold House?

Just how much does it cost to light up one's house from roof to foundation is the million-dollar question.

It turns out not as much as you might think.

Osterland said back in the 1980s when Clark Griswold did it in the movie the monthly electric bill would likely top some $2,000.

Thanks to modern energy-efficient LED lights, he said, covering the family's Wadsworth home with some 25,000 lights costs a mere $25 a month.

N.J. couple’s famed Griswold light display is becoming an entire Christmas village

It was the Festival of Lights Boat Parade in Stone Harbor last Saturday night and homeowners were encouraged to decorate their homes or docks for the festivities.

Along a mostly dark bayside road, one decorated house stood out from the rest as Christmas lights — a lot of them — covered the home, to the point where the exterior illumination lit up the quiet neighborhood.

Parked on the small front lawn was a beat up green station wagon with fake wood trim, a small tree strapped to the roof. A few unwrapped toys surrounded a red bin by the sidewalk with two signs attached that read, “Thank You,” painted in candy cane stripes.

If this sounds familiar, then you’ve visited Steve and Gina Harbaugh’s home in Gloucester County during the holidays. They are the family that for the past three years has decorated their Mickleton home to mimic the old Griswold house in the movie “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation” and collected toys and monetary donations for families in need.

This upcoming holiday season they are taking their decorations away from Mickleton. Creating the surprise pop-up display at their summer home in Stone Harbor not only gave them an opportunity to collect some toys, it also allowed them to announce the new location for their display this Christmas.

“We’re actually doing a mini toy drive which is doing pretty well,” Steve Harbaugh said. The toys collected will jump start their holiday toy drive for their own charity The Harbaugh House.

The summer stop was sudden and unplanned and came together in approximately four days.

“Tonight is Christmas in July and I was not going to do anything,” said Harbaugh. The event includes the boat parade and a house decorating contest, which his neighbor reminded him.

“It’s so funny, she asked me, ‘Hey, are you gonna enter the decorating contest for the house?’ and I said, ‘noooo... yes I am.’”

And in typical Griswold fashion he went overboard.

Shipped down to the Shore was the green station wagon and two mannequins — the smiling Clark Griswold and the animatronic Cousin Eddie draining his RV’s septic tank, RV not included, with a beer in hand.

“It’s a mini version of the Griswold house out front,” Harbaugh said.

Draped around the entire home were approximately 3,000 lights that cascaded over the back deck where Cousin Eddie and Clark took their position looking out over the bay for all the boats in the parade to see. A strategically placed Cousin Eddie was draining bay water back into the bay.

Even a real Cousin Eddie, a.k.a. Tim Jennings, of Woodbury Heights, made an appearance to the delight of the invited guests as he walked around in a short white bathrobe with black socks and dress shoes.

Kim Stotsenburg, a fan of the Harbaugh’s efforts, made the hour and a half drive to Stone Harbor from Paulsboro with her family to drop off a toy and check out the slightly different lighting display. Steve was even gracious enough take them out back to see the rest of the set up.

As family and guests mingled about watching the boat parade, Harbaugh and Mike Lucas, co-owner of All that’s Good , a production company that Harbaugh has been working with to be more transparent to where the toys and money go, talked more about the new location he’s planning for this Christmas.

Harbaugh said he decided to move the display away from his home because the toy drive became so busy. In January he began looking at rural areas for the new Griswold home where the land was not developed.

Even though they had a record breaking year, 12,000 toys and $50,000 in donations, he felt it wasn’t respectful to the neighbors and town so it was time to load up Santa’s sack and move on.

Woolwich Township? Nope. East Greenwich Township? Not exactly.

Only a short front-wheel drive sleigh ride away from the original location in Mickleton will be the new home of the Griswold house, which will illuminate in an undeveloped field under a water tower on Route 77 in Mullica Hill.

The house is only a small part of this year’s extravaganza.

“We’re going to build a Christmas village,” said Harbaugh. The village will include an ice skating rink, carousel and much more. As in the past three years the purpose is to collect as many toys as possible for families in need.

Wednesday afternoon, under blazing sunshine and high humidity, Harbaugh and Harrison Township Mayor Lou Manzo stood in the middle of the township-owned field and discussed plans for the winter wonderland as the groundbreaking day fast approached.

“When Steve pitched this idea with a little hand handwritten sketch sitting at lunch one day, obviously it was very intriguing,” said Manzo about their meeting in March.

Manzo said he was a little skeptical at first, wondering if it would work at the location and if Steve could pull this off in time for the holidays.

“But where there’s a will there’s a way,” the mayor said. Harbaugh told him if he could have a shovel in the ground the first week of August he can build what he needs for this year.

When the ribbon is eventually cut and he walks through the completed first year version of the village, Manzo predicted he would become emotional.

“I’ll be crying.”

In the coming years he said the village will only get bigger, better and more complete and has no plans on letting Steve take it anywhere else.

“In my mind this is a permanent thing. It’s a forever thing.”

Steve Harbaugh's Christmas Village concept

Steve Harbaugh's Christmas Village.

When the village opens the Friday after Thanksgiving, there will be a real ice skating rink, carousel, ferris wheel, igloos for VIP seating, merchant stalls, a cobblestone road with street lights that will light up a downtown village that will lead to a newly built Griswold house.

The house that tens of thousands of people came to see over the past three years will only take up approximately 10% of the 12 acres at his disposal. Harbaugh said people always anticipated what new elements he would add to enhance everyone’s holiday experience and this year it will be an entire village.

There will also be a tent where children can have breakfast with Santa and where families can shop for toys. According to Harbaugh, this will help more easily distribute the toys while the families can enjoy a different holiday experience.

Noreen Owens, of Camden, who was one beneficiary of last year’s drive, will be instrumental in the toy distribution process, Harbaugh said. She is helping in the design of the toy shop and will organize bus trips for children in need to visit the village.

“I feel like this program that they’re trying to start now is going to touch hearts,” said Owens, who attended the Stone Harbor get together with her seven kids.

She explained that she wants to make sure the toys get in the hands of the right people and her job as the community liaison is to help make that happen.

Manzo believes the Harrison Township community will love being associated with the philanthropic aspect of the village.

“They’re going to embrace it in a big way.”

The new holiday village will run through Christmas and coincide with the Township’s Miracle on Main Weekend November 26 to 28, and its tree lighting event that Saturday. Between 8,000 and 10,000 people flood the streets of downtown Mullica Hill for those events, said Manzo.

What both the mayor and Harbaugh envision is that the local merchants benefit from the Christmas village as visitors pass through town. They also would like the retail stalls at the village to be an extension of the downtown shops in keeping with the German Christmas market concept.

“I can’t imagine that they wouldn’t want to be here,” Manzo said of the possibility of local merchants setting up shop at the village.

There are still a few things to figure out, traffic flow and how to best connect the village to downtown Mullica Hill, explained Manzo, adding that these are good problems to tackle.

Harbaugh said he has more than enough time to build what he needs for his first year, with only four months until opening night.

“August, September, October, November gives me 120 days. Plenty of time. I could actually do more, probably plan my Easter event here, I’m gonna have so much time,” he said with a laugh.

4. National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

In this classic holiday romp, Clark Griswold and his family hope for the perfect Christmas break. The holiday plans go to the wayside when cousin Eddie and his family show up unexpectedly. We get to laugh our way through the awkward family moments and unplanned insanity of their holiday together. Much of this film was shot on set at Warner Brothers Studios. 5. It’s a Wonderful Life

This heartwarming tale examines the better world that George Bailey has created for his neighbors in Bedford Falls. Located in  La Cañada Flintridge, CA , you can visit one of the integral homes featured in this film. While not open for tours, the famous Martini family home can be visited street side.

Additionally, additional sets for the city of Bedford Falls were a massive undertaking built at RKO Ranch in Encino, CA. It took nearly two months to construct and spanned three city blocks. Unfortunately, the Ranch was sold in the late 1950s and was redeveloped. The good news is that the Martini home wasn’t part of this set and can still be seen (from afar!) today.

What are some other epic Christmas houses in Ohio?

The Wadsworth Griswold House certainly ranks high on the list of amazing Christmas houses in Ohio, but the Buckeye State is positively teeming with holiday spirit each year, as evidenced by our numerous Christmas towns and decked-out homes. Here are some other epic Christmas houses in Ohio;

  • The Christmas Ranch in Morrow, Ohio. This popular family fun attraction features a million dancing Christmas lights synchronized to holiday music, Christmas shops, pictures with Santa, wagon and train rides, and hot food and drinks. The Christmas Ranch is a splendid holiday tradition by which visitors of all ages are enchanted. It's not so much a "ranch" as it is an entire holiday snow globe!
  • Then there's the stately Victorian home in Cambridge, Ohio, AKA the Dickens Victorian Village Welcome Center, that invites guests to come and take a trip back in time . From November through early January, the town is transformed into old-world England, featuring more than 80 scenes of 180 lifelike figures representing typical scenes from Victorian society and Dickens' novels. This incredible display is an enchanting take on the holiday season, and it will transport you into a holiday worth writing about!
  • Of course, we'd be remiss not to mention *the* Christmas house in Ohio, the one-and-only yellow home from "A Christmas Story!" Arguably the greatest holiday movie of all time, "A Christmas Story"  instantly captivated audiences when it premiered in 1983. Purportedly, the team visited 20 cities before deciding to film in Cleveland... and we're so grateful that they did! Our winter wonderland was captured in this irresistible holiday classic. From shots of Higbee's downtown (where Ralphie spots that darn Red Ryder BB Gun) to the parade in Public Square, you'll spot Cleveland all throughout this movie. You may also recognize, of course, the Parker's House. Nowadays, Ralphie's house is restored and open to visitors as a museum!

Griswold Christmas house back and as bright as ever in La Mirada

By KCAL News Staff

December 8, 2022 / 11:14 PM PST / KCAL News

"I dedicate this house to the Griswold family Christmas... Drum roll please!"

While it might not be exactly 250 strands of Italian twinkle lights adorning Jeff Norton's home in La Mirada, thousands of people are expected to stop by and view his ever-famous "National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation" themed decorations in coming weeks.

Last year, around 30,000 people stopped by to view the award-winning display, an annual tradition for Norton, who takes the time to put together the replica display of the Griswold family home for the holidays.

But in 2021 he faced some backlash from the city of La Mirada as he had added a faux second story to his single-story home so it better matched the film.

They threatened him with fines for setting the display up without a permit, but backed down from the threats when met with community outrage.

This year, he made sure to meet with them ahead of time so that everything could go off without a hitch — quite the opposite of Clark Griswold's many disastrous plans for a fun, old-fashioned family Christmas.

"They were worried about things happening at my house and pretty much we've got all that ironed out," Norton said, noting that as long as the city of La Mirada isn't held liable for any mishaps or issues, they're fine with the festive display.

Synthetic snow machines create the illusion of a winter wonderland as families enjoy the decorations, complete with Cousin Eddie's camper, Uncle Louis on the lawn with the burnt out tree and Clark's boss Frank Shirley — bound and gagged to represent the Griswold family's first kidnapping.

"It's pretty close to accurate. I can't see any differences or anything not the same," said McKenzie Zabel. "It looks amazing."

The display has become so popular that families like the Zabels have begun to make their way across the country to take in the happiest Christmas display since Bing Crosby tap-danced with Danny Kaye.

From Nov. 26 through Dec. 28, the classic 1989 film will screen at nine venues all over North America as part of a nationwide tour.

Better yet, each showing will be followed by a Q&A with star Chevy Chase where he’ll share behind-the-scenes stories from his time on set and take questions from the crowd about his “Saturday Night Live,” “Caddyshack” and “Three Amigos” days.

For those in New York and New Jersey, you can catch the “Community” actor on tour at Buffalo, NY’s Sheas Performing Arts Center on Wednesday, Dec. 6 and Newark, NJ’s New Jersey Performing Arts Center on Friday, Dec. 15.

As of now, tickets are available for all shows this holiday season.

Some seats are quite cheap, too .

At the time of publication, our team found some tickets going for as low as $16 before fees on Vivid Seats.

Chevy Chase controversy

Over the years, Chase has stirred up trouble with comedians in his circle.

In 1978, he engaged in fisticuffs with fellow ‘SNL’ cast member Bill Murray backstage in John Belushi’s dressing room.

Decades later, Chase was banned from hosting “Saturday Night Live” after a number of incidents where he derided ‘Not Ready For Primetime Players’ and writers with homophobic and sexist slurs; he also reportedly slapped Cheri Oteri in the back of the head.

This century, the now 80-year-old comic starred in NBC’s “Community” until the fourth season when they cut him loose. Chase allegedly verbally abused Donald Glover with a barrage of racist insults and slurs which led to the firing.

Christmas Vacation Griswold Holiday House

Yes, there's really an entire collection of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation figurines and structures to be had over on Amazon, and as you might expect, they're selling fast. The centerpiece is a hand-painted "Griswold Holiday House" complete with a snowy roof, a wreath-covered front door, and twinkling Christmas lights that flash just as, er, frenetically as you'd expect them to. It'd make for a hilarious addition to any Christmas mantel.

Of course, judging from the number of exclamation points on each Amazon review , fans have already figured out all of this—and they're excited, to say the least.

The house looks beautiful all on its own, but as with any ceramic village, the Christmas Vacation scene isn't complete without a few accessories. Luckily, there are plenty to choose from: a Clark Griswold figurine that'll have your friends in stitches, a three-inch tall Cousin Eddie (bathrobe and all), and a "Freezing Our Baguettes Off" vignette that showcases the entire family gathering to watch Clark turn on the lights, to name just a few. There's also an artful depiction of the pool fantasy , a ceramic camper , and the now-legendary Christmas Vacation car .

Looking for even more movie magic holiday fun? Well, you're in luck, because Department 56 actually carries a total of 10 licensed villages , including Harry Potter , A Christmas Story , The Grinch , and so many other favorites.

Whether you mix and match these pieces with your existing village collections or let them have the spotlight all to themselves, we guarantee your Christmas party guests will get a good laugh out of them—that is, if they aren't too busy trying to buy the figurines off you.

For nearly 100 years, the lighting of The National Christmas Tree near the White House has been a tradition.

With famous singers, the enormous tree, and spectacular lighting ceremonies are a must for all Christmas lovers in Washington D.C.

However, even if you’re not there at the opening lighting ceremony, you can admire the gigantic Christmas tree from mid-December until the beginning of January.

Including visiting one of the many Christmas markets, the festive lights at the National Zoo, the Georgetown GLOW, the U.S. Capitol Christmas tree, the Union Station tree, the Library of Congress Tree, The City Center Tree, or the Botanic Garden Tree.

Chicago, Illinois

From Diana of Travels in Poland

Chicago is a beautiful place to visit for Christmas in the United States.

As a city that tends to be quite cold in the winter, the chances of snowfall or cold weather are pretty much guaranteed.

The city itself goes all out in creating a festive atmosphere for its residents as well as out-of-town visitors.

Chicago has an official tree lighting ceremony at Millenium Park every year. Typically the tree lighting is accompanied by musical performances.

Millennium Park is also a short walk away from the German Christkindlmarket at the Daley Plaza which mirrors Christmas markets in Germany.

There are dozens of booths, representing different parts of Germany in food and artisan items.

Chicago also has ZooLights at Lincoln Park Zoo as well as the Magnificent Mile Lights Festival.

The latter has about one million lights adorning Michigan Avenue and creates an illuminated atmosphere during the Christmas season.

Not too far away is the Winter Wonderfest at Navy Pier where visitors can experience a festive and decorated pier with numerous holiday attractions geared towards kids and families.

The Museum of Science and industry also hosts an exhibition where trees are decorated to showcase the way other countries and cultures celebrate the holidays.

Regardless of what one may choose to do, being in Chicago during Christmas is magical and an experience unlike anywhere else.

New York, New York

From Anisa of Two Traveling Texans

New York City does Christmas better than any other city in the world.

The fabulous decorations, holiday markets, ice skating rinks, and special events all over the city are worth the trip: if NYC can’t put you in the holiday spirit nothing will!

When it comes to decorations, the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree is the most famous, but you should also check out the holiday windows at the big department stores like Saks, Macy’s, and Bergdorf.

If you want to venture outside Manhattan, the residents of the Dyker Heights neighborhood in Brooklyn go all out with decorating their homes!

If you are looking to buy gifts, check out the Bryant Park Holiday Market.  You will find lots of boutique shops, delicious food, and even ice skating.

christmas tree in front of stock exchange in nyc, one of the best places to visit in usa in december

Speaking of ice skating, there are several rinks in Manhattan.  The Rockefeller Center rink will generally be the most crowded, but you can also go to the one in Central Park.

One of the most popular Christmas traditions in NYC is the Rockettes Christmas Spectacular. The dancing and special effects are inspiring.

Another special event is the Holiday Train Show at the NY Botanical Gardens. You can see miniature versions of many iconic landmarks.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, there is so much to see in New York during the holiday season .

Where to Stay in New York

  • The Plaza Hotel : For a memorable place to stay, this is one of the most classic and luxurious hotels in New York. It is located right by Central Park, the Rockefeller Center, and some of NYC’s most popular museums.
  • The Renwick: Offering stylish residential style accommodation, this beautiful hotel is equipped with plenty of amenities and high class comfort. It is also a short walk to the Empire State Building and Bryant Park for exploring.

Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

From Stephanie of Oklahoma Wonders

Oklahoma City might not be the first place you think of for a Christmas getaway, but there are a lot of special winter activities that take place here during the holiday season.

If you love theater and ballet, your first stop should be the Civic Center Music Hall to see the Oklahoma City Ballet’s annual performance of The Nutcracker.

This show tends to sell out early, so make sure to buy your tickets in advance.

If you’re after beautiful Christmas lights, head to “Downtown in December” which is one of Oklahoma City’s most popular festivals .

This event also includes an outdoor ice skating rink, snow tubing, and free rides on the water taxi in the Bricktown Canal, as well as one-off parties like the tree lighting ceremony and Mistletoe Market.

lake hefner lighthouse during a brilliant orange sunset in okc

You can also see great Christmas Lights in Nichols Hills. If it’s a White Christmas, add a drive around Lake Hefner.

If you’re a sports fan, you’ll love attending a game at the Chesapeake Energy Arena to see the Oklahoma City Thunder.

OKC’s NBA team is often selected to play on Christmas Day, but even if they aren’t at home on Christmas you can typically see a game in the days before or after Christmas.

If you’re in town on New Year’s Eve, you can head down to Bricktown’s Opening Night Festival, the most popular New Year’s Eve party in the state.

Boston, Massachusetts

New England’s largest city is absolutely beautiful year-round, but during the holiday season, Back Bay sparkles a little brighter (with seemingly endless rows of Christmas lights), the already-stately brick homes of Beacon Hill are given a festive facelift, and Christmas trees dot the city.

You’ll definitely want to pack your warmest clothes and heaviest coat to explore Boston in winter, but the city’s incredible beauty shines bright in December, making Boston one of the best Christmas vacations in the United States.

While you’re there, be sure to go ice skating in City Hall Plaza, check out the Boston Pops holiday show, and, if you’re into the classics, the Boston Opera House’s gorgeous Nutcracker performance.

It’s hard to say where the best Christmas light displays are in the city–there are simply too many impressive neighborhoods to count–but the Boston Common, Fanueil Hall, Quincy Market, the North End, and of course, Back Bay and Beacon Hill as mentioned above, all deserve a wander.

And, of course, many of the classic things to do in Boston , from exploring the Freedom Trail to museum-hopping, are still a delight (if a bit chilly) in December.

Where to Stay in Boston

  • Found Hotel Boston Common: This boutique hotel in the Theatre District is perfect for exploring Boston. Rooms are bright and comfortable, and there is access to public transport a short walk from the hotel.
  • Revere Hotel Boston Common: Also in the Theatre District and close to Boston Common is this stylish hotel with a stunning rooftop terrace and bar, perfect for crisp afternoon drinks. Rooms are spacious and have a coffee machine for those of you who need coffee the moment you wake up.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

From Derek of Robe-Trotting

Philadelphia is a wonderful city break to turn into a festive USA Christmas trip.

During the holiday season, Philadelphia comes alive with decorations and lights on every street. A Christmas Market springs up in LOVE Park, a wonderful photo spot all year long, as well as on City Hall’s Dilworth Plaza.

There’s a gorgeous Christmas tree in the City Hall courtyard and an ice-skating rink and hot chocolate stand on the plaza.

Another great destination is the ice-skating rink and Christmas vendors around Penn’s Landing. It’s larger and often less crowded than the City Hall festivities.

Another great stop for Christmas fun in Philly is the Macy’s Department Store on Market Street. Inside you’ll find the normal holiday shopping, but on the third floor is Dicken’s Christmas Village.

It’s a self-guided tour of animatronic scenes from Charles Dicken’s classic, A Christmas Carol. There is also a light show and, of course, Santa Claus himself to entertain the whole family.

If you have more time in the city, explore festivities with some  day trips from Philadelphia .

About 30 minutes outside of the city you can visit Longwood Gardens for its seasonal Christmas displays.

Longwood Gardens is a massive botanical gardens complex that celebrates the art of horticulture.

For the Christmas season, they dazzle with lights, poinsettias, and even festive performances.

If you drive about two hours west, you can visit the Sweet Holiday Celebration at Hershey Park.

The beautiful amusement park reopens for Christmas with rides and a beautiful light display.

Whether you’re downtown or just outside of the city, Philadelphia is a festive place to visit for the Christmas season.

  • Morris House Hotel : Located right by Washington Square and a short walk from Independence Hall, Morris House Hotel is both a National Historic Landmark dating to the 18th century and a popular boutique hotel!

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

From Paulina of Paulina on the Road

One of my favorite Christmas trips in the US is exploring the largest city in Wisconsin: Milwaukee!

Already throughout the year, Milwaukee has plenty of things to offer to its visitors.

From spectacular museums such as the Milwaukee Art Museum and the Harley Davidson Museum and great restaurants….there is something to do in Milwaukee for every type of traveler.

During the holiday season the entire city lightens up and it’s just the perfect setting for long walks.

Some of the  best things to do in Milwaukee during winter include taking a brewery tour, going Christmas shopping in Mayfair Mall, and visiting Milwaukee Winter Farmer’s Market.

Long exposure of a street scene in Milwaukee at blue hour during the Christmas season, a Christmas tree is visible in the left side of the photo

The mission of the Milwaukee Winter Farmers Market is to connect neighborhoods to fresh, local food – from farm to market to table.

The Milwaukee Winter Farmers Market brings together about 50 weekly vendors in the Mitchell Park Domes. The best thing is that you can taste some homemade dishes, too!

If you want to learn more about Milwaukee’s brewing tradition, you might consider doing a brewery tour of some of the best ones.

Milwaukee’s most famous breweries include (but aren’t limited to!), Pabst Brewing Company, Miller Brewing Company, or Sprecher Brewing Company.

It’s a must on any trip to Milwaukee, at Christmas, or any other time of year.

Where to Stay in Milwaukee

  • The Plaza Hotel : If you’re looking for a memorable place to stay, this is a great choice for your stay in Milwaukee. The Plaza is conveniently located midway between Lake Michigan and the Downtown Riverwalk, so it’s within walking distance of many of Milwaukee’s top attractions. The rooms also have full-sized kitchens to give you more dining options during your vacation.
  • The Pfister Hotel: For stunning old world charm and a Victorian art collection on site this is the hotel to book. The entrance way is spectacular and the charming martini bar on the 23rd floor is historic. Many rooms also have views of Lake Michigan.

Los Angeles

From Jodie of Ala Jode

Combining beaches, city life, and fun for the whole family, Los Angeles is a great place to enjoy a Christmas holiday getaway.

The weather in southern California in December is mild and sunny, making it a great time of year to visit, and LA boasts some of the best weather in the state.

Despite the sunny weather, your trip to LA won’t be lacking any festive spirit.

The city knows how to do Christmas in style (what else would you expect from the home of Hollywood?), and puts on a real show.

As well as the Christmas spectaculars put on by local theme parks, LA has a number of Christmassy events to enjoy.

View of LA skyline from Griffith Park with stockings and holiday decor in the foreground--you can expect decor like this when visitin LA on a USA Christmas trip

Little ones will love riding the Holiday Light Festival Train in Griffith Park, while all ages can enjoy the Christmas lights that stretch from Beverly Hills to West Hollywood.

For foodies, you can also enjoy one of the many Christmas Eve menus available around the city.

If you’re traveling to Los Angeles as a group, the annual Christmas pub crawl is a must!

It’s completely free to join and will take you to some of the best restaurants and bars along Long Beach – just make sure you bring your ID (and your Santa costume!).

Where to Stay in Los Angeles

  • Hotel Erwin: With views over the Pacific Ocean and Venice Beach Boardwalk, you will be hard pushed to find a hotel with more iconic views. Rooms are stylish and comfortable and most have balconies to take in the views. You can also lounge in the rooftop bar for a dreamy LA afternoon.
  • Palihotel Melrose: For something a little more city based this beautiful hotel in Hollywood spares no expense in charming details, homey comforts and stunning decor. The location is also excellent in the heart of the Melrose Shopping District.

Detroit, Michigan

From Chelsea of The Portable Wife

Detroit may not be at the top of everyone’s travel bucket list, but it’s a truly magical city to visit at Christmastime.

Between the vibrant downtown events, enchanting historic village, and a high chance of snow, you won’t regret a Christmas trip to the Motor City.

Downtown Detroit has undergone a large-scale revitalization in the past decade, with the Campus Martius area getting a major makeover.

This award-winning urban park transforms into a winter wonderland in December, with open-air ice skating, artisan craft stalls, and a towering Christmas tree.

The surrounding streets are also lined with twinkling lights and illuminated branches, making a simple evening stroll into a festive experience.

Just outside the city center lies Greenfield Village, the famous living history museum depicting how Americans have lived and worked since the late 1700s.

Large Christmas tree in Detroit MI at night, one of the best christmas vacations in us

While nearly two million tourists come here every year to see historical places like Henry Ford’s home and the Wright Brothers’ bicycle shop, the Holiday Nights event draws in the Christmas crowd.

Every weekend in December, Greenfield Village dials the holiday magic up to 11.

Visitors can step back in time as they ride in decorated Model T cars, pass by carolers dressed in historical outfits, and skate beneath the stars.

All of the historic buildings are decked out in garland and lights, and the smell of roasted chestnuts wafts through the air.

It’s one of the closest places you can get to a European winter break   without leaving the country!

San Antonio, Texas

From Ketki of Dotted Globe

San Antonio , located in southern Texas, is famous for its rich history and Spanish colonial heritage.

It is home to many Spanish frontier missions including the famous Alamo, the beautifully landscaped Riverwalk, and many famous museums.

The city has amazing markets including the Farmer’s Market in Pearl District and the Historic Market Square which has a variety of Hispanic goods.

San Antonio is also a great destination for a family vacation, featuring much-loved spots like Six Flags: Fiesta Texas and the San Antonio Zoo.

While San Antonio is a year-round destination, it is especially lovely to visit San Antonio in winter , when the Riverwalk trees and bridges are decorated with a million lights.

There is nothing more romantic than taking a stroll along the Riverwalk during this wonderful time of the year.

The Riverwalk restaurants have music and great Mexican food while the neon-lit riverboats add to the ambiance.

Christmas magic is present all over the city and even the horse carriages near the Alamo are decorated with fairy lights.

Don’t miss the many holiday lights at the UNESCO-listed San Antonio Missions or 18th-century San Fernando Church, either.

Leavenworth, Washington

From Marissa of Postcards to Seattle

When you’re looking for a getaway around the holidays, head right to Washington State’s small town of Leavenworth.

Located in the heart of the Cascade Mountains, you’ll feel like you’ve gone to Germany with the Bavarian theme here.

All the storefronts have a European feel to them, and you’ll be delighted to find multiple sausage stands and beer gardens.

Christmas is the best time to visit Leavenworth , as the entire town is decorated in lights.

You can find traditional German music and Christmas carols playing with musicians dressed in Lederhosen during the weekends.

Mulled wine and spiced nuts are also sold this time of year for a special treat that makes you feel like you’re visiting traditional German Christmas markets.

Kids will love sledding down the hill in the middle of town during the day.

You can also visit the Gingerbread Factory and the Nutcracker Museum to take home a few souvenirs.

Speaking of nutcrackers, the whole family can go on a nutcracker hunt during this time of year to find a list of nutcrackers hiding around the museum.

You won’t want to miss out on visiting Leavenworth in the winter .

Whitefish, Montana

From Jenn and Ed of Coleman Concierge

Everybody dreams of a classic White Christmas in the US.

It brings back memories of a simpler time when people still carol in the streets, and miracles wait around every corner.

That spirit of Christmas past is alive and well in Whitefish, Montana.

The Whitefish Christmas season officially begins on the first Friday in December with the Whitefish Christmas Stroll.

Carolers are singing, bells are ringing, and chestnuts are roasting on open fires.

What’s more, snow is already falling on the slopes of Big Mountain, which are visible from the decorated streets of the quaint, historic downtown.

Whitefish Montana covered in snow with a ski slope visible in the background. Whitefish is one of the best christmas vacations in usa

It’s a white Christmas, “just like the ones you used to know”.

The freshly fallen Christmas snow is perfect for Whitefish’s primary winter passion, skiing.

Big Mountain is perhaps the best place to learn to ski in America.

Besides having the perfect skiing snow from the moist Pacific air hitting the Rocky Mountains, Big Mountain also has an incredible learn-to-ski package where you get two half-days of skiing, including lessons and rentals for under $100.

There are many   things to do in Whitefish for every season , but Christmas is special.

Jackson Hole, Wyoming

From Sarah of Lets Grow Cook

The Wyoming town of Jackson is a simply awesome place to spend Christmas.

Not only do you have 3 ski areas on your doorstep (Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Snow King Mountain Resort, and Grand Targhee Resort), but the scenery, in general, is quite simply stunning.

To the north of the town are the jagged peaks of the Grand Teton National Park, and Yellowstone National Park is also close by.

At Christmas, Jackson’s town square, quite normally adorned with shed elk antlers has them lit up for the festive season.

Christmas lights display in Jackson Hole Wyoming with a pair of antlers hanging in the center

Those elk antlers have been shed by elks overwintering at the nearby National Elk Refuge, which makes a magical place to take a horse-drawn sleigh ride to see these magnificent creatures up close.

Even Santa makes an appearance in the town square every day from December 15 th  until Christmas Eve when he becomes otherwise occupied!

Before Santa leaves, though, he does begin his journey by rappelling out of the Jackson Hole aerial tramway at 4:30 P.M. on Christmas Eve – another great reason to spend Christmas in Jackson!

The downhill skiing and snow sports here are simply beyond compare, but if it’s a more gentle exercise you want, then taking a snowshoe tour through the National Park with the Park Rangers is a simply superb experience and an unforgettable addition to a Christmas holiday vacation!

Just outside the city is Pikes Peak, one of the highest mountains in the area and a great place to explore year-round.

However, Pikes Peak’s Cog Train takes on another dimension during the holiday season.

If you chose the Santa Train you’ll be accompanied by Mr. and Mrs. Claus and their elves for the ride. It’s a great activity for the little ones.

The Garden of the Gods is another famous Colorado Springs attraction.

Monument Valley, Arizona/Utah

From Anna of My Travel Scrapbook

Monument Valley might seem like an odd place to go for Christmas cheer in the USA!

Monument Valley is known for its iconic desert landscape of orange buttes where cowboys roam.

Yet for a few months of the year, Monument Valley is sometimes covered in a light layer of snow.

What an unusual place to celebrate Christmas cheer by seeing such an iconic US sight in the snow!

Monument Valley is located in Navajo Nation which straddles Utah and Arizona, and is prominently featured on many American Southwest road trip itineraries !

There are many things to do and see in Monument Valley. You can visit famous movie spots such as Forrest Gump point and John Wayne point, eat local Navajo dishes, hike around the beautiful mesas and discover Navajo petroglyphs.

In winter, you will want to bundle up on the   hikes in Monument Valley  as it can get quite cold up on the plateau!

To warm up after your Christmas visit to Monument Valley consider staying at the Desert Rose Resort in nearby Bluff, Utah.

They have an amazing pool meaning you can enjoy the winter landscape from the warmth of the swimming pool!

As it is low season, you will also avoid the summer crowds and have an amazing time at Monument Valley in winter!

Part of the Florida Keys , it’s one of the best places to go for the perfect Christmas vacation.

With an average temperature of 67°F, December is one of the best times of the year to go to Key West and Florida in general.

The weather is dry and warm, making it the perfect sunny escape in the United States!

Galveston, Texas

From Patricia of Travel Fam Live

Galveston can be a great escape around the holidays, Christmas in particular.

This barrier island is located about 50 miles from Houston and it’ll offer an array of activities in a warm environment perfect for enjoying a laid-back Christmas on the beach in the United States.

With the festivities starting at the beginning of November, there is always something to see or do around the Island.

Founded in the early 1800s, Galveston has so much history and historical sites that would enhance anyone’s Christmas.

Around Thanksgiving weekend, all the City’s Christmas trees are lighted and Galveston becomes a magical place.

And the best part is that if you are lucky, you might be able to enjoy the beach even in December.

The East End Victorian Homes Tour takes place at Christmas and is a tour of some of the luxurious homes built by the first European settlers to come to Galveston (check the calendar for this year’s date and time).

Dickens on the Strand is a well-known festival organized by the Galveston Historical Foundation that brings you back to the Charles Dickens era.

There is a parade, costume contest and a ball to celebrate the event, complete with attendees dressed in Victorian fashion as they stroll up and down the Stand.

Dickens on the Strand has been happening for almost 50 years on the first weekend of December.

Other Galveston holiday events include the Moody Gardens Festival of Lights, A Lone Star Christmas, Ice Land at Moody Gardens, and many others.

Plus, most of the typical things to do in Galveston are still doable in December, too!

Oahu, Hawaii

From Anne of Travellers Archive

Spending a couple of days in Oahu, Hawai’i , will quickly let you fall in love with the island, its vibe, and its uniqueness.

The best thing to do on Oahu is to leave Honolulu behind and head up North along the North Shore, which is one of the most famous surf areas in the world.

It’s not only the place where surfing was actually born but also an area where huge waves roll in and international pro surfers would quickly take their board for a ride in their “living room”.

The best way to experience the North Shore is by car during a very easy and chilled day trip.

waikiki beach as seen from above, one of the best attractions oahu hawaii

From here follow the Kamehameha Highway and make your way up to the old surfing village of Haleiwa, where you’ll find little shops and an amazing lunch spot – Haleiwa’s Joe.

Once filled up with fresh fish burgers follow up North and enjoy the constant views of the coastal landscape with amazing surf spots passing by, such as Sunset Beach, Waimea Bay, and Banzai Pipeline.

Usually, when the swell is up, you can simply stop on the side of the road and join hundreds of other visitors watching the pros take their waves.

This will quickly turn into an unforgettable Christmas experience.

Destin, Florida

From Disha of Disha Discovers

Some people enjoy staying home for Christmas. Others like to get away and have a vacation.

If you fall into the latter category, Destin, Florida is a great place to escape for a warm USA Christmas on the beach.

Destin truly feels like one of those picturesque towns you see in a Hallmark Christmas movie.

While others are dealing with cold weather, you’ll be hanging out on the beach in a t-shirt and a light jacket.

If you’re worried about not having a white Christmas, don’t worry too much. The gorgeous white sand on the beaches is just as white as snow.

group of boats parked at crab island destin florida

Also, Destin offers several Christmas activities throughout the month of December with everything from tree lightings to parades.

Aside from Christmas activities, there are plenty of other great things to do in Destin.

The Destin Harbor Boardwalk is filled with restaurants and shops. It’s fun to walk around and sample fresh seafood from all of the eateries.

Another memorable thing to do in Destin is to take a sunset dolphin cruise. It’s a magical experience, especially at sunset.

The best part about spending Christmas in Destin is that there won’t be very many tourists around.

By then, peak season has died down and you can enjoy everything Destin has to offer without tons of people around.
