To kick off our list of the best inexpensive getaways in the USA, we have Stowe in Vermont !

This spot is well-known as a panacea for hikers which is entirely free (hooray!) and lets you catch the best of the fall foliage.

If you’d rather take things easy and relax and recharge, you can head to one of the many cute B&Bs for some TLC.

Whatever you decide to do here, you’re bound to agree it’s one of the best inexpensive weekend getaways in the USA!

Niagara Falls State Park

Our next pick for the best affordable weekend breaks in the US is Niagara Falls State Park!

Although you might think this is just a waterfall and nothing else, there are tons of free (and cheap!) things to do.

From riding the iconic Maid of the Mist through the waterfall to tons of gorgeous hikes, you’ll have plenty to explore.

Plus, visiting off-season lets you benefit from off-peak hotel rates which are typically super-affordable.

San Luis Obispo

If you’re on the hunt for inexpensive weekend getaways in the USA, you can’t beat San Luis Obispo.

This California spot is lesser-known compared to other areas on this list, but it’s a worthy hidden gem.

It’s just shy of 200 miles northwest of LA and offers everything from nature hikes to ziplining and surfing.

San Antonio

San Antonio, Texas is absolutely one of the best inexpensive weekend getaways in the USA.

That includes Missions National Historical Park and the gorgeous River Walk (which also houses restaurants and bars!).

If you have a bit of cash to spare, you can visit Six Flags to blow off some steam!

Next on our list of the best cheap weekend breaks, it’s Gatlinburg, Texas!

There are several free things to do here, including walking along Little Pigeon River and heading along the Gatlinburg Parkway.

If you’re looking for next-level inexpensive weekend getaways in the USA, you’ll want to check out Kansas City .

This Missouri gem is known for its incredible jazz, but it also boasts tons of free attractions.

From the Crossroads Art District (accessible by free streetcar!) to the River Market and City Market – you can’t go wrong!

If you’re visiting during the right time of year, you’ll even come across free summer movies and live music.

But we’re here to prove that it’s perfectly possible to do Vegas on a budget!

Although we don’t recommend gambling (if you’re keeping your budgeton the cheaper side), you can catch landmarks like the Eiffel Tower, Venetian Canals, and the Volcano 100% free!

Plus, nothing is stopping you from heading into the various lavish hotels to explore without even staying there. Walking around doesn’t cost a thing!

Also, there are plenty of affordable mid-level hotels in Vegas, which makes it one of the best cheap getaways in the USA. Hotels like the New York New York, and MGM Grand can be booked for as little as $100 a night on weekdays.

It’s best known for being the birthplace of Elvis, but there are also several attractions here that are worth seeing.

We suggest starting at the beautiful Ballard Park and trying your hand at fishing and hiking.

Then, you can explore the Elvis Presley Center (which is packed with memorabilia!) and the Tupelo Automobile Museum!

If you still have some gas in the tank, the Tupelo National Battlefield is an interesting spot for exploring the area’s Civil War history.

Gulf Shores

Now, this is THE place to go for white sandy beaches (there are 30 miles of them here!) if you don’t want to shell out for Cali.

Talk about awesome and affordable weekend getaways in the USA that’ll turn you into a total beach bum.

El Paso is another underrated gem for a cheap weekend away as it’s home to Guadalupe Mountains National Park.

It’s home to tons of great hikes, but the town center also offers streetcar rides and a next-level brewery (DeadBeach!).

Washington, DC

You might be surprised, but the iconic Washington, DC is one of the cheapest weekend getaways in the USA!

Not only can you see both the Washington Monument and the Reflecting Pool free, but there’s so much more .

The city offers several free museums to the public that are operated by the Smithsonian Institution.

These included the National Gallery of Art and the National Museum of American History (among others!).

When you throw in the beautiful cherry blossoms in March and April?

Well, it’s easy to see why this is one of the best budget-friendly weekends away! Just be sure to visit during off-season months so that you can grab cheaper hotel fares too.

Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park is another great option if you’re looking for inexpensive weekend getaways in the USA!

Although you’ll need to shell out for a camping spot, it’s typically way cheaper than booking a nearby lodge.

Plus, you can head on hikes around the Sierra Nevada Mountains and spot amazing waterfalls for free!

But it’s an amazing pick if you appreciate fresh air, nature, and beautiful rock formations!

If you’re heading to North Carolina, Asheville is one of the best inexpensive weekend getaways in the USA.

You can spend hours bopping around local coffee shops, but we recommend booking a cheap log cabin and enjoying Mother Nature.

There are several hikes available to explore in Pisgah National Forest.

But artistic types (and food lovers!) will want to stick to the central town and the River Arts District.

It’s a dreamy spot to escape from the Big Apple for a start.

And you can drive around Minnewaska State Park for as little as $10 for the day while trekking along its awesome trails!

If you head into the main town, you’ll find cheap and cheerful eateries, hopping bars, and the gorgeous Kingston Waterfront.

To round off our list of inexpensive getaways in the USA, we have Big Sur.

Not only is this considered one of California’s most gorgeous gems, but it’s right on the Pacific Coast Highway!

Spend your time marveling at McWay Falls, head to Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park, or check out Bixby Creek Bridge.

To keep this super cheap and affordable, you could can actually camp along the Big Sur too, meaning your accommodation options stay pretty inexpensive.

Now that the kids are back in the classroom for the year, are family vacations still an option for budget-minded parents who don’t want to take their children out of school? Of course! A weekend getaway is the perfect way to take a trip without paying through the nose for airfare or leaving the kids to catch up on schoolwork when they return. The best part: It’s possible to plan an entire weekend vacation for a family of four –including lodging, food and activities — for $500 or less.

1. California: Lake Tahoe Near: San Francisco ; Sacramento, California; Reno, Nevada; Northern California

The secret to keeping your Lake Tahoe getaway under $500? Cooking your own meals! At Lakeland Village Beach , a gorgeous retreat set on the banks of Lake Tahoe, your family can enjoy roomy accommodations while saving money by eating home cooking made in your room’s fully equipped kitchen (there’s free breakfast here, too). Nightly rates start at around $150 plus taxes and fees for a studio lodge that has two floors, an extra queen sofa bed, a balcony and a fireplace — it sleeps up to eight people. Your total cost for two night’s accommodations including taxes will be around $350.

This leaves $150 for groceries and activities. Fortunately, there are countless free things to do at Lakeland Village that cost absolutely nothing. Complimentary amenities include a kid’s camp for children ages 4 to teen, volley ball, tennis, shuttles to town, heated pools, a kids’ pool, a private beach, a fitness center and more. During winter, the resort offers a free shuttle to Heavenly Ski Resort, but lift tickets and ski rentals may price you out of the $500 range (a two-day lift ticket costs $64 per child and $110 per adult). Our advice? Split the studio lounge with another family and you can easily swing a ski weekend getaway for under $500.

2. New England: Cape Cod Near: New York ; Boston ; Portland, Maine; Stamford, Connecticut

Stunning Cape Cod is no typical budget destination — there are plenty of pricy waterfront resorts in the area. But look a little closer and you can find smaller, less-traveled motels and affordable inns, many of which are fantastic choices for families traveling on a budget. Consider the Even’tide Resort Motel and Cottages , where two-bedroom apartments start at just $130 per night (yes, that’s for two bedrooms), and standard single-room digs start at merely $75 per night. Reserve a room with a kitchenette (from $100 per night), and save money on food by cooking your own meals. Large families are comfortably accommodated at Even’tide; the motel’s biggest cottage can fit up to 10 people! Even’tide isn’t set along the ocean, but it’s located less than a mile from the pristine Marconi National Seashore Beach.

Indian summers on the Cape are a prime time to visit — expect blue skies, wide-open beaches, and less crowds through the end of October. Book your accommodations for less than $300 and you’re left with a nice chunk of change for shopping, food and activities. At Even’tide, families can take advantage of a host of free on-site activities, including basketball, mini-golf, horseshoes, badminton, volley ball, billiards, shuffleboard, barbeque and ping pong. Plus, there’s an indoor pool! As winter approaches, the Cape starts to get a bit sleepy and local attractions and restaurants close up shop (Even’tide shuts its doors during winter), so plan to enjoy this weekend getaway soon!

3. Southwest: Wild Horse Pass Near: Phoenix, Arizona; Tucson, Arizona; Las Vegas

Arizona’s Wild Horse Pass area is a stunning region surrounded by the Sierra Estrella Mountains where wild horses roam freely. Conveniently, the Wild Horse Pass is less than an hour’s drive from Phoenix. And plenty of family-friendly activities, from horseback riding to exploring a replica of a 19th-century frontier town, are available here.

We love the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort & Spa as a weekend getaway destination because of its affordable prices and complimentary amenities. Weekend nonrefundable rates for a standard room with a king-size bed or two double beds start at around $140 including taxes and fees (you can often save 30 percent on standard rates by booking a nonrefundable room and paying upfront). There’s an on-site pool that has a huge water slide (an adults-only pool is on site as well), and the resort hosts a busy calendar of seasonal — and free — children’s events.

The resort’s main restaurant, Ko’sin, serves affordable, tasty meals. Expect to pay around $15 for an adult’s entree and $6.50 for a child’s entree.

4. Florida: The Gulf Coast Near: Atlanta , Jacksonville, Florida; Tallahassee, Florida; Mobile, Alabama; Jackson, Mississippi

Escape to Destin, Florida , a charming Gulf Coast town that offers beautiful, uncrowded beaches, plus fishing, diving and golf. Our pick for accommodations in the region? The Hilton Sandestin Beach Golf Resort and Spa , where families can snag a standard guest room with two double beds for as little as $167 per night plus taxes, which includes breakfast if you book the “Sunny Side Up” package (this package requires guests to reserve a nonrefundable room and pay in full at time of booking%29.

There’s so much to do at the Hilton Sandestin, you can get away with spending a weekend there while barely leaving the resort and taking advantage of on-site activities, many of which are free. Play volley ball on the hotel’s sandy beach, splash around in two outdoor pools, go snorkeling in the ocean, play tennis in one of 15 courts, or chow down in one of seven resort restaurants (including one food market that sells budget-friendly prepared items like sandwiches and cookies). If you want to get out and about without spending too much, rent bikes and explore the town on two wheels — you’ll save gas money while sightseeing.

5. Southeast: Colonial Williamsburg Near: Washington D.C. ; Richmond, Virginia; Raleigh, North Carolina; Baltimore

When visiting Colonial Williamsburg on a budget, it’s essential to choose affordable accommodations. After all, the costs of, shopping, meals and tickets for museums and attractions in Colonial Williamsburg can really add up. Stay at Governor’s Inn , where guestrooms start at about $65 per night, and keeping your weekend getaway costs under $500 is easy as pie.

Governer’s Inn is walking distance from Merchants’ Square and historic Colonial Williamsburg. The inn has on-site laundry and a pool, plus a Continental breakfast is included. Governer’s Inn offers budget accommodations, so don’t expect luxury bedding or 2,000-square-foot rooms. But when you consider the inn’s price and proximity to local attractions (plus that free breakfast!), it’s really quite a steal.

Paying less than $150 for accommodations leaves plenty of cash for passes to Colonial Williamsburg ($36 per adult and $16 for kids ages 6 to 17 for one day’s admission), dining and other attractions. For cheap eats, visit Pierce’s Pitt Bar-B-Que or Retro’s, where meals are good and reasonably priced.

6. Mid-Atlantic: The Poconos Near: New York , Philadelphia , Stamford, Connecticut; Central Pennsylvania

There are several all-inclusive family resorts in the Poconos that offer on-site meals and activities, but rates at these properties tend to range from $200 to $300 per person, per night — not an economical option for anyone planning a $500 weekend getaway. The Shawnee Inn is a comfortable alternative to those pricier Poconos mega-resorts. A family of four can book a room in the inn’s adjacent Delaware Lodge for as little as $184 per night on the weekend. Rooms in the Delaware Lodge come with one queen bed and one twin trundle bed, a bathroom with a Japanese soaking tub, and a mini-fridge.

Pay around $300 for two nights’ accommodations at Shawnee Inn and that leaves you roughly $200 for food and activities. Fortunately, dining at Shawnee Inn won’t break your budget. Kids’ entrees at onsite restaurants The Gem and Keystone cost $6 apiece, and there are numerous dinner entrees for adults that cost less than $20 (some are even under $10) at all three on-site restaurants. The breakfast buffet at the River Room costs $14.95 per person, and kids ages 4 and under eat free.

What’s to do around Shawnee? During Indian summer months, activities like fishing, kayaking, mountain biking and hiking are popular. During winter, the resort runs a free shuttle to the Shawnee Mountain ski area.

7. Midwest: Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks Near: St. Louis; Kansas City; Springfield, Missouri

Tan-Tar-A Resort Golf Club, Marina and Indoor Waterpark is an affordable choice for Midwestern families looking to book a weekend getaway to the Lake of the Ozarks . To save money, reserve the “Run of the House” package and get discounted rates; the only catch is you won’t know where your room will be located until you check in. Run of the House rates for a non-lakeview room that sleeps up to five people start at around $237 for a two-night weekend stay.

Buy a bunch of Timber Falls Water Park passes, which cost $17 per person, per day for hotel guests. Spend a day splashing around the indoor park featuring three big water slides, a giant whirlpool, a lazy river and other fun attractions. Dining at the resort’s on-site restaurants is budget-friendly. The breakfast buffet at the Black Bear Lodge Restaurant costs $21.95 per adult and $5.95 for kids ages 4 to 11, and it’s free for kids ages 3 and under. For lunch and dinner, your options include the Black Bear Lodge Restaurant, where kids’ meals cost $6.95. Burger King and Sbarro are also nearby. Allow $90 a day for meals and the total cost of your trip, including accommodations, a day at the water park and all meals, comes to just under $500.

We all need a change of scenery to break up the family routine, and sometimes, a weekend escape is just enough to do the trick. It’s even better when we can make it happen without all the time and money required for a longer vacation. And who's to say that a low-cost weekend getaway with the kids can't give you that sense of freedom and exploration — just in a more condensed and budget-friendly variety? Here are a few economical ways to grab the kids and get away for the weekend. 

Find a Vacation Rental Close to Home

If you find the right one, summer vacation rentals can feel a lot like a second home, only in this case, someone else has to worry about the repairs, the yard work and the mortgage — you get to just come and play.

If you put a little legwork (or, in this case, mouse work) into perusing the numerous online house-finding sources, such as VRBO , Airbnb  or  HomeAway , a pleasing little getaway home can be yours for the weekend. Share it with another family, and voila! The price goes way down, plus your kids get the built-in entertainment of playmates.

Through Airbnb, we recently rented a historic home on the main street of Crested Butte, CO, and all were happy. In this cozy mountain town, we could all walk to hiking trails, parks and restaurants, so the less-than-relaxing parental duties of buckling kids into car seats and reading maps were non-issues. 

Where to go: Find a house within a short drive from home to minimize travel time and maximize fun time!  

Get Back to the Farm

Sure, there’s a bit of irony in paying someone else for the experience of performing farm chores, but there is far more fun to be had at a low-cost, family-friendly farm than just milking the cows. (And besides, even that particular chore is actually quite a hoot, especially if your kid thinks milk just comes from stores!) 

The Inn at East Hill Farm in Troy, NH, lets you wake up and milk cows, and then pet the bunnies, make cheese, tie-dye a pillowcase, paint faces, water-ski, play capture the flag … phew, farm life is hard! Thankfully, the farm hosts evening cocktail parties and talent shows on its green lawn, a welcome bit of relaxation for Mom and Dad. Although it is only about 30 minutes from our hometown of Austin, my family had never been to the piney woods of Texas'  Bastrop State Park . So, at the suggestion of a budget-savvy friend, we booked a cabin there for my husband's birthday. Despite the recommendation, I was nervous: Could this state-owned cabin actually be pleasant enough for a comfy, low-stress weekend with our 1- and 5-year-old kiddos? Indeed it could, we found. 

We loved waking up within the walls of this bare-bones but charming stone cabin built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s. With ferns spreading over the doorway and a picnic table amid the loblolly pines outside, it was our hideaway in the woods. The nearby hiking trails were easy for our little ones and gave them a sampling of what the pine forest can offer: big lizards, wren and cardinal sightings, and the rat-a-tat-tat of a woodpecker overhead. Without much fuss, we savored the simple joys of nature and got a much-needed reprieve from our busy life back in Austin. 

Where to go: Starved Rock State Park in Illinois, Hanging Rock State Park in North Carolina, and a multitude of state parks in Minnesota all have rustic but appealing cabins for rent. Check out what your state's parks have to offer.

After a long day of work, sometimes all you need is a quick and fun getaway. Taking a vacation doesn’t always have to be lengthy trips and taking time off work or school. If you want to take your kids away for the weekend, you’re in luck. 

As you plan your little weekend getaway, you’re probably trying to find a city that offers excellent activities for you and your little ones that also doesn’t require spending more than a few days there. Here are 20 of the best weekend getaways with kids in the USA .

Let’s face it; there’s no place quite like Orlando for a vacation with your kids. There’s Walt Disney World , Universal Orlando, SeaWorld, and other thrilling and exciting attractions for you all to see and do. 

You can spend a few hours to a few days hopping around the various parks for the Disney fans, including their two water parks. Your kids will love all the age-appropriate rides, shows, and seeing the multiple parades with all their favorite Disney characters. 

Then you have Universal and Islands of Adventure. These are great for families with kids and adults alike. They have rides and shows based on favorite movies and something for people of all ages. These are the perfect attractions for families with kids of varying ages. 

Besides all the fun these amusement parks can provide, there’s even more to consider when vacationing in Orlando with your kids. They have two large shopping outlets and you and your family can spend time on International Drive. 

This area has the famous Orlando Eye Ferris wheel and other carnival-style games and rides and makes for an affordable and great activity to do with your kids before returning home. 

One of the best cities to take your kids to is Boston. This city is rich with history and plenty of fun things to do during your weekend stay. This capital city is the perfect place to learn more about the area’s history with your kids. 

If you and your kids love seeing marine life, you need to take them to the New England Aquarium on the water in Boston. This aquarium has everything from eels to penguins to sea turtles and more. If you’re visiting between April and November, they also have whale watching tours that leave from the aquarium’s dock. 

Possibly one of the most visited museums in Boston is the Boston Tea Party Museum . You and your kids can wander through this floating museum looking at exhibits based on the 1773 incident. They do reenactments regularly, so you may want to try and catch one of those.

One of the best free things to do with your kids is hanging out on the Boston Common between touring the various museums in the city. It’s the oldest city park in the country, dating back to 1634. This sizable grassy park gives you beautiful views of the city, great food trucks, and statues of significant figures. 

California is one of the country’s largest states, but if you want one of the best weekend getaways with kids here, you need to pack the family up and head to San Diego. This southern California city is right on the coast and has a little bit of everything here. 

There are several museums and other attractions to visit. One of the most popular is SeaWorld San Diego . Your kids will love the rides, seeing the sharks and other marine life, and especially the live Orca shows. 

San Diego is the perfect place to enjoy a lovely beach weekend with your family. There are over 30 beaches in the city and the county to choose from, but one of the best to visit with kids is La Jolla Shores Beach . They have lifeguards and small areas where waters are calmer than on the open ocean. 

Many beaches in California are known for having large boardwalks and small amusement parks on them. Belmont Park is that place in San Diego. There’s the famous roller coaster, carousel, other rides, and plenty of games for you and the kids to play when you need a break from the sand. Plus, there are plenty of restaurants and shops nearby to check out. 

If you’re looking to escape the mountains for the weekend with the kids, it doesn’t get much better than Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. The town is nestled in the Smoky Mountains and is the perfect place to go hiking or just enjoy everything a mountain town has to offer. 

For the adventure seekers, the Smoky Mountain Alpine Coaster is perfect. It’s a downhill coaster that takes you through the mountains. It’s the longest downhill track in the country and worth doing while in town. 

You and the kids can drive or hike to Friendly Falls for some of the best nature views. It’s a gorgeous waterfall that will take your breath away. They’re also the perfect photo spot to snap a memory of your weekend getaway. 

Of course, there are entrances to the Smoky Mountain National Park nearby that you may want to look into while you’re here. Other fun things to do in Pigeon Forge are visiting the Titanic Museum Attraction, going ziplining in the mountains, and visiting The Island in Pigeon Forge Amusement Park.

Pennsylvania’s largest city, Philadelphia, makes for the perfect weekend getaway with your children. There’s plenty of history, great restaurants, and fun things to occupy your weekend away from home. 

While you’re in Philly, you have to make time to visit Independence Hall . This historical building is where the founding fathers debated the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Within walking distance from this building is the famous Liberty Bell. Kids start learning about American history early on, so seeing significant places like this will be fascinating. 

In the same area of town, you can visit the Museum of the American Revolution , the Betsy Ross House, and more. Kids and adults alike are big fans of the Philadelphia Zoo. This zoo has around 1,300 animals from around the world for you to see and learn about. 

No matter what you like to do on vacations, you can’t leave Philadelphia without trying the famous Philly cheesesteak. These sandwiches are popular, and you can get them at various restaurants around town. But, if you want to try a Philly cheesesteak at the place that first created them, you’ll need to head to Pat’s King of Steaks in South Philadelphia. 

Spending a weekend at the largest alpine lake in North America makes for a weekend getaway that you and the little ones won’t soon forget. Lake Tahoe is a vast lake mainly in California but reaches across the border into Nevada. 

There are several little towns along the lake, but one of the best for families is South Lake Tahoe. It’s on the south side of the lake and is perfect for a weekend getaway in the summer or winter. 

In the summer, you and the kids can soak up the sun while lounging on the shores of the lake. Swimming, boating, kayaking, and other water activities are popular when the weather’s warm. Depending on where you stay, you may have access to chairs and private beach access. El Dorado Beach is one of the most popular in the area. 

There are several hiking trails nearby if you want to burn off some energy and see beautiful sights around the lake. In the winter, South Lake Tahoe turns into a ski town. Heavenly Mountain Resort places you right near plenty of ski lifts and makes for the perfect winter weekend getaway.

For a laid-back and history-rich weekend getaway in the south, Charleston, South Carolina, is one of the best places. The weather is beautiful in Charleston much of the year, so taking advantage of outdoor activities should be high on your list. 

One of the best things to do with your kids in Charleston is to take them to the Charleston Aquarium . It’s a stunning facility that’s right along the Cooper River. They have well over 4,500 animals for you to see and learn about. Popular animals include the American alligator, barn owls, Caribbean spiny lobsters, sea turtles, and more.

Your kids will love other popular museums like the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry and the North Charleston Fire Museum . The Fire Museum features fire-fighting vehicles from as far back as the 1700s. 

While in Charleston, you have to make time to walk around the Historic Charleston Market. It’s a market dating back hundreds of years. It features various vendors selling produce, local honey, and other handcrafted items. From here, you can walk to the famous Rainbow Row that features rows of colorful houses. 

Vail is one of the best skiing destinations in Colorado, making it an adrenaline-filled weekend away with the kids. Even if skiing isn’t your thing, Vail makes for a beautiful summertime destination for the family too. 

This small resort town sits in the White River National Forest, at the base of Vail Mountain. Regardless of what time of year you plan on visiting, staying in one of the ski resorts is the best way to truly experience Vail. During the winter, you’ll be right near all the lifts to easily hit the slopes. 

Fly fishing, golfing, and hiking are popular outdoor activities during the summer. Booth Falls Trailhead is an excellent trail for beginners and children. Another great attraction in Vail is the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens . It’s the world’s highest botanical garden that features stunning flowers and a paved walking path. 

If you’re looking for a great indoor activity while in Vail, the Colorado Snowsports Museum and Hall of Fame is a great option. It’s a museum where you can learn all about the history of various snowsports and essential figureheads in the sport. Their gift shop is a great place to grab a souvenir to bring home with you. 

Chicago is rich in culture and famous for its deep-dish pizza, so why not make a trip to the Windy City for a few days? Chicago is one of the best weekend getaways with kids because if you’re nearby, you can quickly drive into the city or fly into one of its two major airports. 

Kids and adults alike love heading to Navy Pier when in Chicago. The pier is 3,300 feet long and extends into Lake Michigan. The pier has games, restaurants, and sometimes events that are worth attending. You can take a walk along the pier, making it a great free activity in the city.

The museums in Chicago are exciting for people of all ages. You can take your kids to the Shedd Aquarium to see the beluga whales and other marine life, the Field Science Museum , and the Art Institute of Chicago. All are fantastic museums that everyone will love. 

Arguably one of the things that makes Chicago famous, besides deep-dish pizza, is the renowned Bean statue. Better known as Cloud Gate Park, this beautiful city park is perfect for walking around, letting the kids play, and seeing The Bean. 

And you can’t leave Chicago without trying deep-dish pizza. You can find this delicious and unique style of pie at almost every pizzeria or Italian restaurant in the city. 

The Big Apple is one of the most well-known cities in the entire world. Most people either love it or hate it, but you have to go at least once in your lifetime. While the city is large and bustling, it’s still a great place to take your kids for the weekend. 

You can’t head to Manhattan without taking the kids to Times Square . This tourist attraction is the epitome of New York and features bright neon lights, billboards, street performers, and plenty of shops and restaurants to visit. The best part is that simply walking around is free. 

Manhattan is loaded with some of the best museums in the world. While you probably don’t want to visit every single one during your weekend, you may want to look into one or two. There’s the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The American Museum of Natural History, and more.

Other notable places to try and visit while in NYC are the Empire State Building, Rockefeller Center, the Statue of Liberty, One World Trade Center , and Central Park. You can get a great view of the Statue of Liberty from Battery Park or book a tour of the island and see it in person.

The northernmost state on the eastern seaboard of the United States may not be the first place you think of for a weekend away, but it should be. Bar Harbor is a little coastal town on Maine’s Mount Desert Island that is booming during the summer. 

One of the main attractions in Bar Harbor is that you’re in the perfect location to visit Acadia National Park . They have a visitors center just outside of town where you can find hiking information and other relevant information about visiting the park. The good news is that the views are outstanding, and many trails are kid-friendly. 

In town, you’ll have your pick of some of the best seafood Maine has to offer. Lobster is famous here, and most of it is caught fresh daily. Besides Acadia, you can walk across the Bar Island Land Bridge for the outdoorsy family. It’s perfect for people of all ages and is something unique to do here. 

There are also a few beaches in town that are worth hitting when the weather’s warm. Something you and the kids will love is to take a tour with Bar Harbor Whale Watching Co . They provide whale watching tours, lighthouses, and other nature tours via boat. 

If you’re closer to North Carolina and want a beach weekend with your family, the Outer Banks (OBX) is the perfect place. It’s a barrier island off the coast with plenty of small little towns and beaches for you and the kids to relax on. 

There are several little towns on the barrier island. Some of the most popular are Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head. Each town has several little beaches for you and your kids to lounge on. Swimming, surfing, and other beach activities are popular here. The good news is that if you need any beach supplies, there are several little stores to buy whatever you need. 

Besides spending time on the beaches, there are plenty of other low-key activities to fill your weekend in the Outer Banks. Your kids will love First Flight Adventure Park . They can participate in aerial ropes courses and show off their skills. 

While on the island, you won’t want to miss seeing the Wrights Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills. Several piers set up along the island are great for walking, watching the sunrise, and fishing.

Minneapolis is one-half of the Twin Cities and a great weekend getaway for you and your children. This midwest city has the Mississippi River running through it with plenty of parks to play at and museums to explore. 

One of the best parks in the city that you may want to visit is Lake Harriet Bandshell Park . The park features paved biking and walking trails. You can rent bikes from stores in the city or just stick with your own two legs. There’s even a castle-inspired bandshell that’s sure to impress your kids. 

If you want to try something new on your trip to Minneapolis, they have a great rock climbing gym just north of downtown. They have instructors and padded mats to ensure the safety of everyone. 

Other attractions in this half of the twin cities include the Minneapolis Institute of Art , the Mill City Museum, Immersion Van Gogh Exhibit, and more. Another great sight to see is the Stone Arch Bridge. It looks like something out of medieval times and is a great place for photos to remember your weekend getaway. 

As Washington state’s largest city, you can be sure that you’ll have more than enough things to do and see here for a weekend trip. While there are dozens of things to do, since you’ll only be there for a weekend, you’ll want to look into the can’t miss things to do in Seattle. 

First and foremost, you can’t go to Seattle without seeing the Space Needle . Whether you just want to see it from afar or travel up the 605 feet tall spire, it’s worth seeing. If you and your kids aren’t afraid of heights, heading to the observation deck is fantastic. The views are spectacular, and there’s even a rotating glass floor that allows you to see the ground below.

Another thing that you can’t go without seeing while in the city is Pike Place Market . This large market features restaurants, shops, and local vendors selling food, earrings, and so much more. It’s fun to walk around, and your kids will love watching the famous fish-throwing that happens every hour here. 

For some of the best views in Seattle, Gas Works Park is the best spot. It’s in a neighborhood north of downtown and offers the best skyline views. It has walking paths and a playground that the little ones will love playing on.

There are two mountain ranges that make up what we know as the Ozarks. There’s the Boston and the St. Francois mountain ranges. This beautiful area is perfect for families that love being outside hiking, walking, and being on the water. 

In the summer, most people head to Lake of the Ozarks to swim, boat, and lounge on the sandy shores of a lake surrounded by tall mountain peaks. There are several vacation rentals and resorts along the lake and nearby that you and your kids will love.

You may want to consider several lakeside resorts for your weekend getaway. One popular resort is the Margaritaville Lake Resort . It has a beachy atmosphere and is an exciting resort right on the water. Another great option is The Lodge of Four Seasons . This one has two championship golf courses as part of their list of amenities.  

However you choose to spend your weekend in the Ozarks, you’re sure to have the time of your life. Good luck convincing your children that it’s time to return to reality. 

Louisville is one of the most popular cities in Kentucky, therefore a great place to spend a few days with your kids. It sits just across the Ohio River from Indiana. As the state’s most populated city, you’ll have plenty of choices when it comes to weekend activities. 

Louisville is known for two things: the Louisville Slugger and Churchill Downs, where the Kentucky Derby is held every year. Churchill Downs opened in 1875 and is a beautiful complex that’s worth seeing while you’re in town. 

You have to visit the Louisville Slugger Museum and Factory . This museum is in downtown and on what locals call “museum row.” The museum is perfect for kids, especially if you and your family love baseball. You’ll learn all about how this famous baseball bat brand came to be, and you can even create a personalized bat. 

Other popular attractions in the city include the Speed Art Museum, the Louisville Zoo, Malibu Jack’s Louisville, and Cherokee Park.

This northern Texas city is vast and offers one of the best weekend getaways with kids. Especially if you’re in Texas already or in neighboring states, this large city has a lot to do and see, so narrowing down which activities you prefer to do during your weekend before you head there is a good idea. 

Just outside downtown Dallas is the Dallas Zoo . The zoo sits on over 100 acres of land and houses around 2,000 animals. They have animals from around the world and a fun exhibit on dinosaurs that they affectionately call Jurassic Park.

There are several museums in Dallas that your kids might be interested in. There’s the Dallas Museum of Art downtown, the Meadows Museum, the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden, and the Sixth Floor Museum at Dealey Plaza. 

Something that your kids will love doing is heading to Celebration Station in east Dallas. This facility has hundreds of arcade games where you can win tickets to trade for prizes, go-karts, batting cages, and a mini-golf course. You can grab food here without worrying about if they have anything that the kids will approve of.  

The town of Jackson Hole sits in Wyoming’s Jackson Hole Valley. This area of Wyoming is well known for its scenic hiking, ski resorts, and historic downtown area. Like many other ski resort towns, you can still take the time to visit them during the summer. You’ll have a plethora of different activities to partake in. 

Of course, if you’re looking for a winter or weekend getaway when you can see snow and ski, then Jackson Hole is the perfect spot. There are several resorts that place you right near the ski lifts. One of the best options, winter or summer, is the Four Seasons Resort and Residences Jackson Hole .

There are also several golf courses in the area if you love playing golf. If you plan on visiting during the summer or when the weather’s getting a little warmer, hitting the hiking trails is a great way to spend the weekend. 

Some popular hiking trails that are great for kids are the Granite Canyon Trailhead, Phelps Lake Overlook, and the Albright View Overlook. The downtown area is beautiful and offers excellent shops and restaurants for you to enjoy while in town. 

Tybee Island is only about 17 miles from Savannah and the perfect little island getaway for the weekend. It’s a small island town with plenty of beaches, little restaurants and shops, and activities that your kids will love. 

Mid Beach and South Tybee Beach are two of the best beaches on the island. Most people love South Tybee Beach because it places you right near the Tybee Beach Pier and other attractions on that end of the island. 

The pier is perfect for fishing, walking, and just enjoying the fresh air. There’s a covered pavilion, too, if you need some shade from the Georgia sun. Besides laying on the beach, swimming, and building sandcastles, there are a few great things to see on the island.

Find the ideal family trip to create incredible memories without breaking the bank this year

Pulling off an enjoyable family vacation on a budget is an Olympic feat—there's the researching, the planning, the booking, the packing, the traveling, and the wrangling. So much wrangling. While trips with children, especially young ones, can be a lot of work, they can be worth it for the quality time and memories. There's something special about being away from the daily grind, connecting as a family and watching kids explore a new place. 

A key component of a family trip is picking a place that won't break the bank. To help make planning for 2024 easier on you, we've rounded up 18 of our favorite budget-friendly destination ideas that are both kid  and  wallet-friendly.

If your brood is outdoorsy, you'll be happy to see plenty of national parks  on the list, including iconic spots like Yosemite , Yellowstone and the Grand Canyon . But if you aren't interested in centering a trip around outdoor adventures , we have you covered with plenty of urban centers and under-the-radar locales alike. From the free museums of  Washington, D.C ., to laid-back vibes of  Asheville, North Carolina to the mouthwatering cheap eats of  Portland, Oregon —take your pick from this list and rest assured your money will go a long way.

Fun cheap family vacation in the U.S.

1.  Destin, FL

Seek fun in the sun in Destin, Florida , known for its fishing spots, sprawling white sand beaches and being conveniently less expensive than other popular destinations in the state.

Family-friendly activities include boating, snorkeling, parasailing or just strolling along the Destin Harbor Boardwalk. Use the money you saved to indulge in a sunset cruise on a glass-bottom boat or a high-speed racer. And don't miss  Henderson Beach State Park , which offers quiet and secluded beach access with a hiking route through the sand dunes. 

2.  Hunter Mountain, NY

If you've never properly explored upstate New York , you'd be forgiven for thinking it's not much more than a big farm where pets go when they're very old. And while that's probably still partly true, there is so much more to explore, especially around the Catskills mountains and the town of Hunter . Located at the foot of Hunter Mountain, the town looks like it's been forgotten by time, with lots of local shops mostly still with their colonial-style outdoor aesthetic. There are very few, if any, rubber-stamp brands here, the economy is supported by local businesses.

Hunter Mountain is an all-year-round destination. During the summer, there are paths to hike, trails to mountain bike along, nearby streams to play in and so much open space, it boggles the mind. During the winter, the natural beauty of the area is covered in a thick, soft white blanket and it's only one of a few locations on the east coast that offers really good skiing and snowboarding runs. Rentals and Airbnb accommodations are available, but none beat the Hunter Mountain Sanctuary . Rest your aching legs in the evening, sitting outside on a big, wooden patio with a glass of your favorite wine, and as the sun sets, gaze upon those very same slopes you were carving up only a short time ago.

3.  Kings Canyon National Park, CA

Want to really impress your kids? Head to  Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks in California , where they can stand among giants (giant sequoia groves, that is) and meet General Grant (the second largest tree in the world).

The parks also boast 240 caves, a scenic segment of the Sierra Nevada mountain range (including the tallest mountain in the contiguous US), parts of the Kings River and San Joaquin River, and the towering Moro Rock formation. Because of how isolated it is, Sequoia National Park also has some of the darkest skies in the country, making it one of the best  places to stargaze for amateur astrologers alike.

4.  Yellowstone, WY

No other place on earth is like Yellowstone National Park . The massive natural sanctuary (3,471 square miles of greenery) mesmerizes all visitors with its mountains, canyons, geysers, and subalpine forests (don’t be surprised if you spot buffalo, too). With challenging hikes into the backcountry as well as handicap-accessible wooden boardwalks, the wonders of Yellowstone are for everyone. Bring a tent and get here early to take advantage of the affordable campgrounds (seven of which are first-come, first-served and five require reservations ) with fire pits for flame-grilled meals—or if camping is not your thing, book a room at a local hotel .

5.  Grand Canyon, AZ

It’s one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World, and for good reason: The Grand Canyon is a sight like no other. The kiddos might complain when you get out of Wi-Fi range, but they’ll remember hiking these trails forever. For an overnight at the Grand Canyon , opt for the North Rim, less crowded and has no-fuss, first-come-first-served campsites. More experienced hikers can switchback steeply down to the river, a mile below the rim, where secluded campsites reward the effort.

6.  Washington, D.C.

The nation's capital is a perfect spot for a family vacation—not only are there plenty of activities that bring history to life for kids in Washington, D.C ., but a large percentage of them are completely free. Visiting the National Mall, monuments, or other historic buildings such as the Library of Congress won't cost you a penny. On top of that, all of the 17 Smithsonian museums are free to enter—from the National Museum of Natural History to the National Zoo . Stop by the American History Museum to see Dorthoy's ruby red slippers, the National Archives Museum to see the original Constitution or the National Air & Space Museum  to see the largest collection of aviation and space artifacts in the world. 

7.  Oak Hill, WV

Located on 1,500 wooded acres adjacent to New River Gorge National Park, the ACE Adventure Resort  is a one-stop shop for all of West Virginia 's outdoor possibilities. ACE offers  white water rafting trips  on the New and Gauley Rivers,  zip line tours  with views of the Gorge, rock climbing, mountain biking and lake adventures. And a ny family on a budget will appreciate the multi-day, all-inclusive package deals that allow for spending without worrying about added charges.

8.  Asheville, NC

For families who love the great outdoors and great food,  Asheville  in North Carolina is for you. Hiking the Blue Ridge Mountains and seeing the beautiful waterfalls at the Pisgah National Forest are free and, in town, you’ll find lots of family fun ideas like minor league baseball  during the summer season. Feel like splurging? The beautiful gardens and grounds of the Biltmore Estate are well worth the price of admission. Inside the historic mansion, you'll find works by Renoir and others. 

9.  Portland, OR

The eccentric city of Portland is ultra-kid-friendly, with plenty of affordable and free activities to keep little ones entertained during any season. Explore the bounty of nature in this section of Oregon: hike through Forest Park (featuring 50 different trails), get up close to waterfalls (don't miss Wahkeena Falls in the Columbia River Gorge) and visit the famous International Rose Test Garden . Nearly every section of the city features well-manicured parks and playgrounds for kids to get their energy out, plus plenty of cheap eats to fuel their adventures. Another great way to get a sense of Portland's artistic culture without breaking the bank is to head to First Thursdays, where you can enjoy local artwork, food and drink vendors, and more. 

10.  Williamsburg, VA

If your squad’s favorite subject in school is history—or riding roller coasters—then make the trip to Williamsburg,  Virginia . Families can explore  Historic Williamsburg (a Colonial-era living history museum complete with horse-drawn carriages) and then seek thrills at Busch Gardens , where you'll find coasters, animals, and more. If it's summer vacation, add on a visit to Water Country USA (the season opens May 2023). Check out the area’s package deals like the Kids Play Free Package , which includes your choice of hotel (from selected partners) and free admission to multiple parks to save some cash. 

11.  Durango, CO

Durango and its nearby mountains and mesas are a thrill in any season. In warmer months, you'll find everything from epic hiking to white water rafting, plus one of the most spectacular train rides in the country: the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad (if you visit during snow season, it’s one of the best winter train rides in the country). 

Mesa Verde National Park and its incredible cliff dwellings are just a short drive away, and you can camp for free nearby or check out the railroad's hotel packages for discounts on overnights in the charming former mining town. In winter months, Purgatory Ski Resort  is less expensive and less crowded than Colorado competitors like Aspen, but with equally majestic slopes.

12.  Outer Banks, NC

The Outer Banks are a series of barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina, separating the mainland from the Atlantic Ocean. The beautiful, breezy coastline incorporates open-sea beaches, state parks and shipwreck diving sites, making them a popular holiday destination. The area positively drips in history: Roanoke Island was the site of England’s first settlement in the New World; aviators Orville and Wilbur Wright took their famous first flight at Kill Devil Hills and the pirate Blackbeard fought his last battle at Ocracoke. But this archipelago, often referred to as just OBX, isn't just an Aladdin's cave for history aficionados. It also offers fishing, windsurfing, snorkeling, scuba diving or even just wildlife watching. It's a definite must-see if you're exploring the eastern seaboard.

13.  Moab, UT

If you're an outdoorsy crew with an affection for national parks, look no further than Moab, Utah for your next family vacation. With its proximity to two national parks—Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park—plus several majestic state parks, your days will be packed hiking, rafting, boating, and ATVing through the red rocks. Another perk: the area has a lot of campsite options or affordable cabins to rent. 

14.  Bandera, TX

Giddy up to the  Flying L , a genuine dude ranch outside of San Antonio , for some Western-themed fun. Whether you’re dying to try horseback riding or just hoping to relax in a resort where kids can entertain themselves, this ranch has you covered. There are plenty of fun outdoor activities for the whole family including creekside fishing, horseshoes, 18-hole putt putt and a full golf course, plus courts for basketball, tennis, volleyball, and even pickleball.

15.  Myrtle Beach, SC

Though the sand at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina can get crowded, you’re sure to find a spot for your umbrella (six feet away from everyone else). Just wander along the Grand Strand—a 60-mile stretch of white sand beaches from the North Carolina border south to Georgetown with Myrtle Beach at the center. If sand isn't your thing, book a room at the Sea Mist Oceanfront Resort , which just underwent a renovation and boasts its own lazy river and water park-like pool. Better yet, visit on weekdays for better rates, and save some extra dough. 

16.  Yosemite, CA

Yosemite is not just one of California's most awe-inspiring landscapes, it's one of the most impressive examples of natural beauty in the world. Nearly 1,200 square miles of God's gorgeousness includes waterfalls, thousand-year-old sequoia trees and some of the most daunting rock formations in the U.S.

Despite the sheer enormity of this national park , most tourists flock to an 8-sq-mile area of Yosemite Valley where the park's most well-known landmarks are located, including the Half Dome  rock formation and infamous, monolithic El Capitan, along with enjoyable hiking trails through the natural monuments. Take note that reservation and permit procedures are often changing. Be sure to check out the recreation.gov site for more details before you make travel plans.

17.  Old Orchard Beach, ME

The quaint, peaceful beauty of Maine is on full display at historic Old Orchard Beach —a vacation destination for over 170 years. Here, your family will find gentle waves perfect for swimming, fishing, sailing, kayaking, and top-notch whale watching. In the summer, treat your kids to Palace Playland , New England’s only beachfront amusement park (open seasonally), with over a dozen rides and an arcade. Keen to pinch some more pennies? Plan ahead, pitch a tent and save some money by camping on the beach .

18.  Niagara Falls, NY

Everyone on Earth has heard of Niagara Falls and most are probably at least vaguely aware of its history, but nothing will quite prepare you for the moment you first see the 188ft drop in person and hear the roar of water pouring over the precipice at nearly 70mph. There are plenty of things to do here; many are free, but most will require a credit card or cash.

Parking availability isn't too bad, but it's not exactly cheap and sadly, in recent years, the site of outstanding natural awesomeness has taken a turn towards a somewhat commercialized Vegas look and feel. But in all fairness, if you're not too far away and have never visited, it's worth appreciating the mighty force of Mother Nature, even if it's just once.

What to see/do : Los Angeles’s quirky, vintage cousin, Pasadena is only 10 miles from LA but a world away. Families should allot several hours for Kidspace, with educational exhibits, outdoor play areas, and a kids’ water basin and splash arroyo. There’s also the Huntington Library and Botanical Gardens, which includes the famed Japanese gardens, as well as a duck pond and art collections. Don’t miss Vroman’s, one of the world’s best independent bookstores with a gigantic (and well-stocked) children’s section full of books and amusements for all ages, and a tour of the life-sized space models at NASA’s JPL. And, of course, no trip to Pasadena is complete without a pilgrimage to the Rose Bowl.

Where to stay : Try the well-located Courtyard by Marriott Old Town in historic Old Pasadena, an easy walk from numerous shops and restaurants. Or, for a splurge, try the elegant Langham Huntington Pasadena, a gorgeous and surprisingly kid-friendly spot with an outdoor pool, tennis, and whimsical Imagine Tea for children.

Where to eat : Fun fact: the cheeseburger was invented in Pasadena. Stop by beloved fave Pie N Burger (in business since 1963) for classics the whole family will love—plus, yes, lots of pie. Or build your own burger at Slater’s 50/50. Another fave: the wildly creative (and hugely Instagrammable) sweet treats at Afters Ice Cream.

Big Bear, CA

What to see/do : A year-round vacation destination less than two hours from Los Angeles and three and a half hours from Las Vegas, Big Bear is known for its adventure-centric lake, rustic living, and fresh mountain air.

Where to stay : One of the great pleasures of staying in Big Bear is renting a cabin. BigBearCabins has more than 300 options available, while there’s also BigBear.com , or lakefront Lagonita Lodge , close to the village and with condo-style rooms, an indoor pool, outdoor Jacuzzi, family rec center, and picnic areas.

Where to eat : Popular spots for families include Saucy Mamas pizza joint, Oakside Restaurant, with live music and a kid-pleasing menu, and North Pole Fudge & Ice Cream Co. for delicious fudge made onsite.

Sedona, Arizona

What to see/do : While, yes, stunning Sedona is a frequent romantic choice for couples, its bounty of outdoor activities are also fantastic for families. Hike Bell Rock Pathway, visit Out of Africa Wildlife Park for game drives and encounters with tigers, giraffes, lions and hyenas, or enjoy the natural slides at Slide Rock State Park. Kids will also enjoy the Sedona Trolley. Where to stay : Poco Diablo Resort offers a wide range of activities—everything from hiking, spa, tennis, road cruisers, a golf course, and of course a pool—plus it's owned by the Yavapai Nation. As an added bonus, it’s dog-friendly if Fido is along for the journey. Where to eat : Outlaw Grille is a family-favorite for burgers, sandwiches, and ribs, while Javelina Cantina offers fun Mexican with incredible views. The Cowboy Club is another Sedona standby popular with all-ages, including Country-Western décor and an extensive menu.

Albuquerque, New Mexico

What to see/do: See the Explora Science Center and Children’s Museum of Albuquerque, the aerial Sandia Peak Tramway for spectacular views more than 2 miles up, the ABQ BioPark Botanic Garden, and the can’t-miss Indian Pueblo Cultural Center for the fascinating history of the 19 Indian Pueblos of New Mexico. Albuquerque is also home to the world's largest hot air balloon festival, a spectacular way to see the desert.

Franklin, Tennessee

What to see/do : A Civil War site located only 20 minutes outside Nashville, Franklin is well-worth exploring for its own bucolic charms. (It’s also home to some of country music’s biggest superstars.) If your children are old enough, take in tours of historic homes and museums Carnton, Carter House, and Lotz House, all commemorating the Battle of Franklin. Otherwise, check out the restored historic movie Franklin Theatre, the Nashville Zoo, and the SOAR Adventure Tower amusement center and obstacle course.

Where to stay : Stay at Hilton Garden Inn Nashville Brentwood , which is connected to the historic Mooreland Mansion and was used as a field hospital for both Union and Confederate troops during the Civil War.

Where to eat : Barbara's Home Cookin' is a popular spot for old time Southern classics.

Memphis, Tennessee

What to see/do : Must-visit Memphis attractions include Beale Street—famed as a blues mecca—Sun Studios (where Elvis got his start) as well as the Civil Rights Museum. Don't miss the daily Peabody Duck Walk at landmark Peabody Hotel Memphis, either. It's a free activity that'll delight the entire family. And, of course, every Memphis trip requires a pilgrimage to see the home of the King: Graceland.

Where to stay : Stay at Big Cypress Lodge , located within the massive Bass Pro Shops pyramid and a hit with families seeking a semi-rustic—yet still supremely comfortable—experience.

What to eat : Eat at The Cupboard, BBQ joint Central, or The Arcade Restaurant: Elvis himself was a fan.

What to see/do : In the heart of the Berkshires, Lenox is all about outdoor activities in a stunning nature setting: think swimming, fishing, boating, hiking, and biking. If your children can stand a bit of culture, Lenox is home to Tanglewood, the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Get lawn seats, pack a picnic, and make an evening of it.

Where to stay : Berkshire Mountain Lodge offers affordable one-bedroom condominiums with kitchens, living, and dining areas, located just outside of Lenox.

Where to eat : Betty’s Pizza Shack is a quirky crowd-pleaser while Frankie’s Italian Ristorante serves hearty classics destined to please the whole family. Stop by Chocolate Springs Café for Dessert.

Burlington, Vermont

What to see/do : Vermont’s largest city, waterfront Burlington is a liberal college-town that retains its small town feel. Take a stroll down car-free Church Street Marketplace, with shops, cafes, and open-air performers. Sound of Music fans might wish to make the pilgrimage to tour Trapp Family Lodge, 2,500 acres owned by the Von Trapp family. And, of course, no Vermont trip is complete without visiting the Ben & Jerry’s Factory Tour—including flavor tastings.

Where to stay : As the name suggests, Hilton Burlington Lake Champlain is on the water, with a convenient location walking distance from Church Street Marketplace. There’s also a heated indoor swimming pool and Jacuzzi, with free breakfast each morning.

Where to eat: Try La Boca Wood Fired Pizzeria, or Bluebird Barbecue. There’s also Dutch Mill Family Restaurant, in adjacent town Shelburne, a popular, down-home spot with a playground outside.

Woodstock, Vermont

What to see/do : Hike Mount Tom, swim in Silver Lake, and visit Billings Farm and Museum, with kid-friendly throwback demonstrations of rural life like sheep-shearing and butter-making.

Where to stay : Stay at riverfront The Shire Woodstock , with a wraparound porch, free parking and free wi-fi, and walking distance from town.

Where to eat : The Barnard General store and Mountain Creamery are both popular spots for sandwiches and ice cream or pie.

Bowling Green to Chattanooga to Helen

Bowling Green, Kentucky

What to see/do : Located only an hour north of Nashville, Bowling Green is full of family-friendly activities. Jump into adventure with an underground river cruise or ziplining at Lost River Cave , or explore the longest underground cave system in the world at Mammoth Cave National Park. Other highlights include the National Corvette Museum, where Corvettes are produced, next to Motorsports Park.

Where to eat: Try Hickory & Oak, with twists on Southern classics, or Rafferty's, with extensive offerings and a kids' menu.

Chattanooga, Tennessee

What to see/do : While in Chattanooga, a fast-growing city retaining its southern charm, the creative and educational playspace Children’s Discovery Museum and the Tennessee Aquarium are musts. Other highlights for the family: Take a ride on the historic Tennessee Valley Railroad (for younger kids, there’s a Thomas the Tank Engine experience), get up close with bobcats and red pandas at the Chattanooga Zoo, or ride the carousel and splash in the fountains at Coolidge Park. For those looking for all-American Fourth of July activities complete with waving flags and lots of red, white and blue, we've compiled a list of cities throughout the U.S. that will be celebrating in a big way.

New York City

Fireworks fanatics will be thrilled this year as the Macy's pyrotechnics are once again launched from the Hudson River for the first time in more than a decade – meaning they can be seen from several locations in Manhattan and New Jersey. The spectacle will light up the New York City night with lights and sounds as thousands of fireworks shells are shot into the sky during one of the country's largest Independence Day celebrations. Surprisingly, NYC does not host a commemorative parade. For those looking to escape the city, day-trippers can head to Long Island and Fire Island for beach activities, barbecues and fireworks festivities.

Hanover, New Hampshire

For a feel-good holiday, Hanover will be hosting the Old Fashioned 4th of July Celebration, which includes an apple pie eating contest, classic games, a hometown parade, live entertainment and pony rides. When it's time to eat, experience the theme "Sweet Summertime" with classic treats like juicy watermelon and ice cream taking center stage. What's more, city vehicles like fire trucks will be on view for an up-close look.

The Independence Day celebrations span several days and include the Boston Harborfest, complete with Chowderfest and military band performances. Of course, all the top Orlando theme parks such as Walt Disney World Resort, SeaWorld Orlando and LEGOLAND Florida Resort will have fireworks, but you'll also be able to see some for free from downtown Orlando's Lake Eola Park at the Fireworks at the Fountain event. For a unique way to celebrate the holiday, check out the Hall of Presidents at Magic Kingdom, drive a real tank at Tank America or protect the White House at America's Escape Game.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

The show is also set to include lighted drones synchronized to live music from the Grammy-winning Nashville Symphony. You can also spend the day making a splash at the Nashville Shores Water Park, which will hold a hot dog eating contest on July Fourth, or sip a cool beverage on one of the rooftop bars along Lower Broadway.

Los Angeles

If you prefer vacations to laid-back beach towns, Los Angeles has about 75 miles of coastline and is perfect for weekend getaways in July. Spend Independence Day enjoying the eternal sunshine while playing volleyball, catching waves, sailing or enjoying a family picnic with farm-to-table dishes during the day. Once night falls, you can watch multiple fireworks shows while roasting s'mores over a fire pit.

About 25 miles inland from Santa Monica , the city of Pasadena has the longest-running fireworks show on the West Coast since it began in 1926. In 2024, visitors can head to the Rose Bowl Stadium for an electrifying soccer match between crosstown rivals – the LA Galaxy and LA Football Club – followed by the fireworks pageantry. Before and during the match there will also be activations honoring local veterans. San Francisco

The City by the Bay will host an array of waterfront commemorations, including a memorable fireworks display that can best be seen from Aquatic Park and Fort Mason or Pier 39. If you'd like to watch the show from the water, hop aboard one of the San Francisco Bay cruises offered by the Red & White Fleet or Blue & Gold Fleet.
