There are many fuel bunks from Bangalore to Theni so you drive till Theni worry free but make sure to fill your tank before Theni to make sure your have enough fuel to reach Munnar as after Theni, the fuel bunks are only a handful.

Best Time to Start from Bangalore

Before I went on the road trip, I had chats with few people who have already done the Bangalore to Munnar Road Trip. Everyone recommended to start early to skip peak traffic at Salem and reach Munnar before the sunset.

I did exactly the same, I started at 05:00 AM and reached before the sunset. This helped me skip traffic at most of the places.

When you enter Munnar, you may want to stop at few scenic points to enjoy the sunset. I have particularly enjoyed Munnar GAP road.

GAP road at Munnar is something special, the scenic landscape will take out all your tiredness of driving almost 10 hours and you will feel accomplished reach Munnar!

Road Trip Diary – Bangalore To Munnar

August 23, 2014

After ticking off all the top weekend destinations from our travel list ( Read : Top 5 Weekend getaways from Bangalore ) and a lot of brainstorming on finding a perfect destination to spend our long weekend, we zeroed in on one of the top-most tourist destination of Kerala – Munnar, famous for lush greenery, scenic views, home-made chocolates and plenty of vantage points. Here is our Road Trip Diary – Bangalore to Munnar.

Munnar is 476 km from Bangalore and the drive is one of the best with breathtaking views, hairpin bends, steep climbs accompanied by waterfalls, windmills, tea estates and much more. We started at 5:00 AM from Bangalore taking the route via Hosur -> Salem -> Chinar to Munnar, crossing a lot of toll gates and taking breaks to feed our lenses, we reached at 7:00 pm in the evening and were welcomed by a beautiful drizzle.

Here are some of the best things that we experienced whilst on our road trip from Bangalore to Munnar. So, come along with us as we take you to on a sojourn to one of the most stunning hill station of Kerala.

1. The Drive Itself

The drive is amazing as the roads are awesome as for the most part you are going to drive on the highway  (NH7), not even that, the state highways are also good and well maintained with lots of coconut trees on either side of the road. Stock up on food and hit the road with your favorite travel songs to play along with way.

Road Trip Diary - Bangalore To Munnar

2. Endless Windmills

Windmills stretch on for many kilometers on either side of the road. I was fascinated to see so many windmills running together. On a different note, after a bit of googling around found that Tamil Nadu generates 6000 W while Kerala 32 W of wind power from windmills. Isn’t that cool!!!

3. Zillions of  Breathtaking waterfalls

one after the other will keep you glued throughout the journey. #MonsoonMagic

Skip the popular ones and find a waterfall with no one around for miles.

The undulating forest landscape looked beautiful with trees, small trickling streams and wooden bridges add an extra charm to the place.

4. Tea Gardens to accompany you

Rolling hills are carpeted by manicured tea gardens. As far as the eye can see there is greenery all around. You will be awed by the spectacular scenic beauty on every turn of the road.

Munnar is one of the largest exporters of tea all over the world.

5. Unexpected Surprises

might just pop out of nowhere. We met this cute baby elephant playing happily whilst mommy was busy in her own world.

6. Sampling Cuisines

Stop for lunch at some roadside restaurant and devour yourself to hot cooked rice, spread on a banana leaf with rasam , sambar , curd, beetroot, payasam :):), a typical south Indian cuisine.

7. Plenty of Scenic Views

will tempt you to stop your car and capture the memories for a lifetime.

These drives through the tea estates are the most amazing drives I have had! How is NH7? Is the traffic very bad? I could never even dream of driving NH17 (Mumbai-Goa Highway) because of tehterrible traffic.

Hosur-Krishnagiri by Road in Car or Bike on the way to Munnar

You will reach the ghat section afterwards. The squiggly road leads to Munnar and right before reaching the hairpin road, you must make some preparations because you are entering a special territory. For the next 1.30 hours, there will be no shops or petrol bunks, so make sure that your car/bike has adequate fuel. Since the road is going uphill, your vehicle will consume more fuel. The condition of the road is also not that good in some areas.

You can spot a lot of monkeys here on the road but when you stop the vehicle, they will surround you to search for eatables. When you try to capture them on your camera, they might take your snacks and run away in a fraction of a second. If you are travelling in a car, stop the car after the windows are up.

Following the ghats, you can see the signboard of Thoovanam waterfalls . You can stop the vehicle here to have a glance at the silver line nestled between opaque forests. In the monsoon season, the waterfall will be at its peak which is a breathtaking beauty.

thoovanam-waterfalls-top-view

After a few minutes of travel, you will reach Marayoor village from where you can have a hot tea from the small eateries and coffee houses here. Marayoor sandalwood forest is an inevitable sight in the Munnar trip. You can identify the forest by long metal fencing on either side of the road. Riding on that road will be an utter enjoyment for you. You can catch a partial look at Lakkam waterfalls on the way. Pullover and imbibe this spectacular sight.

Dolmens in Marayoor

The road goes down and up and you will reach another peak. Stop the vehicle and feed your eyes with the scene of viridescent flora. If you reach in the evening, the mist would be preparing to engulf the area. Once you see the board ‘ Eravikulam National Park ’, within a few minutes you will reach Munnar town. Like a Green duvet, the plantations spread their wings throughout the area. A visit to the Kannan Devan Tea museum will help you to know how the tea is processed and the evolution of the tea industry. Your nose will get the flavour of being there with the aroma of tea plants as well.

way-to-eravikulam-national-park

If you are lucky enough, you can spot the elephants along with their calves playing amidst the plantations or getting down to the lake to drink water. Focus your camera towards them to capture their moments of life in an attractive frame.

If you are interested in wildlife, then Chinnar Wildlife sanctuary will be a great place where you can enjoy. Animals like star tortoise, slender loris, tufted grey langur, giant squirrel, gaur, spotted deer, crocodile, tiger, leopard, a wild elephant can be found in the Chinnar sanctuary.

How To Travel From Bangalore To Munnar

During my recent all India Delhi to Bangalore ride, I travelled from Bangalore to Munnar.

Until now, Alleppey backwaters was my favourite destination in Kerala. But this time, as I repeated a few more popular destinations in Kerala , and travelled from Bangalore to Munnar, I realised what I was missing.

Munnar is my new favourite in Kerala now. And this is because of many reasons.

Read this detailed Munnar travel blog to find out the reasons why I loved it became my favorite.

So yea, as I journeyed from Bangalore to Munnar I realised how this place is actually a highlight to not miss while travelling in Kerala. I am going to revisit it. And the next time I get there I am going to spend at least a week.

Here’s a video of the ride from my Youtube channel :

Bangalore To Munnar Road Trip

For most people, the preferred route remains Kochi to Munnar, but let me tell you what: IT IS BORING.

During my Munnar to Kochi ride (I did Bangalore to Munnar to Kochi), I did not find a single tea estate throughout the route. The entire route to Koch felt just another winding road in the mountains. If I ever did this route again, I won’t bother driving or riding. I will catch the bus.

So yea, if you are planning to visit Munnar, and you have the flexibility to choose the route, I suggest you do it Bangalore to Munnar and not Kochi to Munnar.

Here’s a detailed travel blog on why Coimbatore to Munnar is better than Kochi To Munnar .

And the reason why I suggest you do it Bangalore to Munnar is because of Coimbatore to Munnar stretch.

Let’s discuss it all in detail!

Day 1: Bangalore to Coimbatore

There are a few routes you can take but the one I am suggesting is more scenic. Here’s is how it looks in Google maps…

bangalore to coimbatore map

If you are going to Google navigate the route, the maps are going to suggest you Hosur-Erode NH44, because it is quicker (though longer).

I don’t suggest the NH44 route unless you are in a hurry.

The route that I have shown in the map above is more scenic and avoids tolls.

bangalore to munnar road trip

As you reach Khanakpara, the route becomes more or less a countryside drive.

Most of the road from here now on will be two way (though properly made) taking you to small villages, hills and many water bodies.

bangalore to munnar road trip

Until Malavalli, you will keep seeing hills at a distance. This is the boring part of the entire Bangalore to Munnar road trip, but nevertheless still very scenic.

Between Malavalli and Kollegal is when things start getting more interesting. At times the road bend and curve giving you the hints of BR Hills lying ahead.

BR Hills, or the Biligirirangana Hills , if you don’t know, is a hill-station bordering Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The entire BR Hills is a wildlife sanctuary and a declared tiger reserve. Many people also come here for a holiday, so you can imagine the beauty.

bangalore to munnar by road

As soon as you leave Kollegal and near BR Hills, you see many signboards saying ‘Wildlife. Drive Slow’. Do that, or you may be fined.

Around 50km from Kollegal, also lies the Buddhist settlement of Dhondenling. Call it the mini version of Bylakuppe and Namdroling Monastery in Karnataka .

It is worth exploring the monastery at Dhondenling, and roam around the small Buddhist settlement. You may notice a few houses (and a part of the monastery too) under construction. It is also possible to find a hotel and stay there.

bangalore to munnar trip

From Dhondenling until Hasanur (40 km) you will see more winding roads with frequent episodes of a mountain drive and a straight road. For photography lovers, there will be many picture-perfect spots. It is on this stretch that you will also cross from Karnataka into Tamil Nadu. The road on the Karnataka side may seem better made.

It will take around an hour to complete the 40 km Dhondenling to Hasanur.

Hasanur to Coimbatore is again a boring ride, but only about 2 hours (or 100 km) at max.

Day 2: Coimbatore to Munnar

This is the most interesting bit of the original Bangalore to Munnar ride.

Again, there will be a couple of routes to take but the one I suggest is more scenic. Here’s is how it looks in the Google maps…

coimbatore to munnar map

If you are going to Google navigate the route, the maps are going to suggest you Palladam-Udumalpet NH88, because it is quicker during day time traffic (though longer).

I don’t suggest the NH88 route unless you are in a hurry.

The route that I have shown in the map above is more scenic and avoids tolls. It takes you through beautiful countryside in Tamil Nadu.

The first half an hour, until you reach Malumichampatti, in Tamil Nadu, is the only boring stretch of the journey. From Malumichampatti onwards, you are going to see countryside winding road, windmills, and a lot of green spaces.

At times you will witness at least 50 windmills on one side and about 100 if you do a panorama.

bangalore to munnar

If you have a drone, you are going to love bringing it here just like I did (have you seen the video I shared above?).

From Malumichampatti to Udumalpet you will keep seeing windmills and open fields. This stretch of the entire Bangalore to Munnar drive will moreover give you a good introduction into village life in Tamil Nadu.

It should not take more than two hours to cover the 70 km Malumichampatti to Udumalpet distance, even if you took a few stops.

In about 30 km from Udumalpet, the hills of Anamalai tiger reserve and the most beautiful part of your Bangalore to Munnar journey begins.

Anamalai Tiger Reserve , if you do not know, is home to the endangered Bengal tiger, Indian elephant and Indian leopard. Other than that it shelters Asiatic wild dog, Nilgiri and lion-tailed macaque. The tiger reserve, together with the several other contiguous protected forest and grassland habitats occupy an area of about 3,253 km.

bangalore to munnar kerala

The beginning of the hills in Anamalai Tiger Reserve will moreover make you exit Tamil Nadu and entier Kerala. In Kerala, the Anamalai tiger reserve is known as Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary.

As you enter Kerala and cross Marayoor, the vast expanse of tea-estates start showing up. It is from here that you will start getting a feel of what Munnar is popular for, and that is tea gardens.

bangalore to munnar by bike

You will come across many tea gardens and shops selling freshly picked tea leaves. It is possible to stop and visit one of the tea estates on the way.

tea estate

From Marayoor to Munnar is about one and a half hours drive but it will take at least two hours (generally more) because you will be forced to stop owing to the beauty of the place.

Bangalore To Munnar By Bus

Consider this route just as popular as how Delhi to Manali route is for north Indians. Having said that, there is no dearth of buses here.

A Bangalore to Munnar bus journey is a convenient one as it ends at the final destination. Catch a bus from Bangalore and voila! No need for any changes in the middle.

bangalore to munnar bus

The only downside of the journey is, however, it takes the highways and covers the boring bits. The total distance of a Bangalore to Munnar bus trip remains less than 500 km and takes about 11 to 12 hours in total.

There are nearly 10 different bus operators that you can choose from on Redbus and other similar apps. Most of these operators have overnight buses only. Most buses leave after 9 in the evening and reach Munnar the following morning around 7 or 8 am.

The basis on what kind of bus you are travelling with – AC or non-AC etc – you pay somewhere between 900 to 2000 Rupees. I have travelled with KSRTC buses only so I recommend them for a Bangalore to Munnar bus trip. There are other private companies too like The Royal Travels, Greenline Travels, KPN and others.

KPN remains a popular choice for many people as they have both AC and non-AC sleepers. Their non-AC sleepers buses are the cheapest option. If, however, you want to travel in extreme luxury with push back seats, leg support, Air Conditioning and other similar luxury perks, choose The Royal Travels. They charge about 1900 Rupees each side but they are worth the price.

Other amenities for vulnerable situations like emergency contact number, fire extinguisher, emergency exits are also given in most buses.

Best Time To Travel Bangalore To Munnar

Since South India has tropical weather with unbearable heat and sweat, the best time to travel Bangalore to Munnar remains during the winter months.

western ghats

I happened to travel in the first week of February and it was still too hot everywhere except for in Munnar. The entire journey (especially around Coimbatore) was hot and humid.

During winter, Munnar remains a little cold at around 15 degrees but very pleasant during the morning. In the day time, you won’t need to wear anything other than a Tshirt. In the evening, a light jacket often suffices.

So yea, speaking of the best time to travel Bangalore to Munnar it is winter months of December, January and February. Other than these three months, monsoon is a good time to travel too as it is off-season and not too sunny.

If, however, you are one of those people who always want budget accommodation in India , I suggest you travel between March and June or September and October.

Bike Trip From Bangalore To Munnar

Photo of Sharath Lal Raju

I had clocked 1000Km in my Royal Enfield classic 350,certainly wanted to go on a long ride and like a blessing we had the long weekend for thanks giving (I work for an American based company should not be a surprise I work at Bangalore). After lot of discussion's, I managed to find three friends who were excited about the prospect of a bike ride to Munnar and on 24th November midnight at around 12.00am our engines were ignited for a ride which will be long ,interesting and full of experience.

Demonetization had made the roads less cumbersome, there were quiet less vehicular movement in the highway we traveled. We almost took 600 odd kilometers to reach Munnar, we lost our way, we hit the Thenni Kambam route to reach Munnar ,lack of sleep creeping in and had to rush the caffeine intake often to keep us moving.

Once we crossed Theni Kambam and started scaling the heights of Munnar, we were up for a visual splendor, the breeze was getting cooler, the roads started to twist and twirl making commuting on a bike an experience, the greens started soothing your eyes, the mountains were standing tall like guardians, Blue skies were complimenting the already rich canvas.
