Santurtzi

Tourism destinations

Santurtzi is located in the historical territory of Bizkaia. More exactly, on the left shore of Ibaizabal-Nervión Ria at the foot of Serantes Mountain (451m).

It is known all over the world because of its port . Not in vain, it is the nerve centre of the fishing activity. Moreover, the port has also a marina . We can enjoy this environment walking through the marina walk or, rather, by means of a boat trip.

Monuments and outdoor Sculptures

Afterwards, we can go into the town in order to know, first-hand, its different monuments. We begin the visit with the church of San Jorge, which dates back to 1075. We carry on with the Town Hall (building from the beginning of the 20th c. with two cupolas of black slate and glazed windows inside), the Oriol palace or the monument consecrated to the virgin of El Carmen, patron saint of Santurtzi. Every 16th July, fishers take an image of her in an emotive procession in honour of deceased arrantzales.

Further on, along Iparraguirre Walk we will find the monument to La Sardinera, "con la falda remangada, luciendo la pantorrilla..." (with the skirt rolled up, showing the calf) as the traditional song says.

Finally, we'd like to emphasise Santurtzi's peculiar sculpture museum. It does not consist of a specific building; instead, we're talking about an open-air museum with fourteen sculptures displayed in different spots of the town. National and international artists donated their works for the general public's enjoyment.

Santurtzi, a town devoted to the sea

From the summit of Mount Serantes to the waters of the fishing port, all the roads lead to the sea in Santurtzi.

Thanks to its ideal location on the Bilbao Abra Bay , the forts on Mounts Serantes in Santurtzi were in charge of defending the entrance to the Estuary of Bilbao for a long time. Now, the town is home to the Port of Bilbao, an essential engine of economic activity in Biscay and one of the most important ports in Atlantic Europe.

However, Santurtzi’s true essence lies in its maritime tradition. Its customs are carefully kept alive not only in its fishing port or in the Cofradía de Pescadores, but also in the history of the ‘sardineras’ (sardine sellers) and in the town's most popular delicacy, its sardines. A history preserved in songs, buildings, monuments, and paths.

Everyday life in Santurtzi has always been linked to the sea, so the fishing port is beyond doubt the epicenter of the town. Its harbors have at some point been frequented by sailors, corsairs, merchants, smugglers, fishermen, traders, adventurers, rowers, ‘lemanes’ (port pilots who helped boats avoid the natural obstacles in the Nervion Estuary) and, of course, the well-known ‘sardineras’.

As one of our most popular songs says: ‘Desde Santurce a Bilbao’, –from Santurtzi to Bilbao– these women used to come down to the harbour when the fishing boats arrived with the fish they had caught on the day. After filling their baskets, they carried them along the streets of nearby villages to sell the fish, letting the neighbours know they were thereby announcing their arrival in a loud voice. The Monumento a la Sardinera , located in Avenida Iparragirre, created by Basque sculptor J. Lucarini, pays homage to these hard-working women, who had to travel on foot across towns and villages for kilometres on end as the song goes: “con la falda arremangada y luciendo la pantorrilla” –their skirts rolled up, showing their calves–, while carrying up to 20 kilos of fish in a basket on their shoulders to help maintain their families.

Apart from licensed fishing boats, which are still put to sea nowadays, in the harbour, you can also see smaller amateur fast fishing boats, as well as pleasure crafts, boats that take people on whale-watching trips , ships from whose decks you can discover the Abra and its cliffs , while you can go sport fishing, learn to sail or go on a guided boat tour along the Nervión Estuary.

Some of the remains of the industrial activity that one day took place in the area have also been well-preserved. An old manual crane can be found on the harbour near a statue of the Virgen del Carmen –patron saint of both the town and all fishermen–, whose festivities are celebrated every July 16. On that day, local fishermen get together to take the image of the Virgin from the Church of San Jorge to the end of the harbour by boat, and once there, flowers are offered in memory of deceased fishermen.

Not far from here is the Cofradía de Pescadores, restored in 2011. The structure houses a fish market, where the process of selecting the best pieces and bargaining over their price has become a ritual. Inside the same building, we can find an interpretive centre too, Santurtzi Itsaso Museo, an entertaining museum where you can find out more about the strong connection between Santurtzi and the sea. Pesquero Agurtza , one of the last few coastal fishing vessels made of wood that we can see today, is also part of the history of the fleets that sailed from Santurtzi to the nearby fisheries. Now turned into a boat museum, this interpretive centre shows visitors how the local white tuna or ‘ bonito del norte ’ was caught and preserved, giving also a more detailed account of what the life of the Basque fishermen, known as ‘ arrantzales’, was really like on board their ships.

Next to the quay, built over a surface gained to the sea, Parque de Santurtzi is the centre of local social life. A combination of exotic tree species, paths and sculptures surround the lovely bandstand decorated with polychromatic mosaics that stands in its middle. Next to the park, we can find the Church of San Jorge –the other patron saint of the town. The exact age of the church is unknown, but records confirm it was already part of the town in 1075. Close to the park as well, we can see the Town Hall , built in an eclectic style, and the Palacio Casa Torre , a beautiful Baroque building dating from the 18 th century. There is also a lively commercial and recreational area, where you can either have a taste of one of Santurtzi’s most popular and delicious dishes, grilled sardines , accompanied by a good txakoli wine , or try of one of our pintxos , which are real gastronomic pleasures.

Within walking distance, in the direction of Portugalete , is the Palacio de Oriol . Erected in 1902 by Severino de Achucarro, who designed some of the most outstanding buildings in the Ensanche de Bilbao at the time, this is the most illustrative example of a manor house in Santurtzi . At the end of the 19 th century, the town experienced a period of economic and commercial growth, and imposing residences sprang up to accommodate the wealthy families that were starting to make their fortunes.

The companies that established their infrastructures in the neighbouring mountains for the intensive exploitation of its iron ore mines, and the industrialization of the left bank of the Nervión Estuary, brought about the rise of the bourgeoisie together with an increase in the number of visitors who regularly came to the town to ‘have a bath’ in the Cantabrian Sea. The above-mentioned Palacio de Oriol, a three-storey building accessed by a great staircase surrounded by lovely gardens, was the preferred accommodation for these newly emerging classes. Currently, as a hotel, the palace continues offering its guests and visitors equally spectacular views over the seafront of the town of Getxo , with the Abra opening up to the Cantabrian Sea to one side, and to the other, the Bizkaia Bridge , framing the estuary towards Bilbao .

Mount Serantes

With a height of 451 metres, Mount Serantes is the perfect vantage point for viewing the Bilbao Abra Bay and the mouth of the Nervión Estuary , which gives access to Bilbao . Such is the view from there, that the mountain long served as a lookout point from where the incoming and outgoing ships were watched, preventing enemies and pirates from attacking the city.

Built in 1881, El Torreón –The Keep– has been recently restored. From its top, there is an impressive view of both banks of the Estuary, a large part of the Biscayan coastline and the so-called ‘montes bocineros’ Mount Oiz and Mount Sollube. A year after the keep was finished, in 1882, El Fuerte (The Fort) was constructed. This bastion belonged to a larger system of fortifications that were erected during the same period. Its main purpose was to defend the coast with the help of the artillery batteries that were once installed in it.

If you are looking for a good excuse to enjoy the natural beauty of the Serantes and to admire the amazing views it offers, you can either take part in a guided tour, where you will learn more about the history of the mountain, or you can climb all the way up to its summit on the annual traditional pilgrimage to Cornites, celebrated every Easter Monday since the 19 th century. On that day, the locals head towards the mountain and celebrate such a special occasion in the open. In addition, for those who like staying physically active, Mount Serantes is part of Santurtzi’s Nordic Walking Centre, having 38 km of well-signposted trails of different levels that follow the contours of the mountainside.

Sardinera eguna

OUR SIGN OF IDENTITY

The history of Santurtzi is strongly linked to the sea. In fact, it has one of the most important ports in Atlantic Europe and songs have even been written dedicated to the activities and personality of its inhabitants, such as the famous song “ Desde Santurce a Bilbao ”.

The fishing boats, nets and the delicious aroma of grilled sardines are its hallmarks and soak the Fishing Port with their fragrance.

Strolling through its streets is a trip back in time, an ode to the trade of fishing, fish auctions and the old sardines.

THE ONES FROM SANTURTZI

Santurtzi was originally known as a fishing village.

Given the rocky geography of the coast, the most common boats in Santurtzi were small boats as the pinazas or txalupas.

These were boats, moved by rowing and sailing, they were used for different uses, such as fishing, piloting and cabotage (coastal merchandise traffic), or as an aid in cod fishing.

The fish they used to fish was mainly sardines.

Sardinera eguna

GRILLED SARDINES

The sardine is an oily fish rich in the omega-3 fatty acids essential for the proper functioning of our organisms: they are beneficial for the heart, help to reduce cholesterol and triglyceride levels and lower the blood pressure.

A helping of sardines is a highly recommendable part of a tasty, well-balanced diet.

The sardine season runs from June to November but is at its peak in July, when Santurtzi celebrates the feast of its patron Our Lady of Carmel.

At that time warmer water leads to an increase in the plankton which these voracious fish feed on, enabling them to build up more fat under their skins and making them even tastier.

Sardines grilled on a low fire of embers and seasoned only with coarse salt are a mark of identity of the local culture and cuisine, and can be found in restaurants throughout Santurtzi.

SARDINE DAY

In 2015, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the erecting of a statue in tribute to local fishwives, Santurtzi began to hold “Fishwives’ Day” in late summer every year. This festival is a tribute to the sardine sellers who inspired the iconic image of local women.

The festival begins with a traditional offering and tribute laid at the foot of the statue.

Dancers and flute players in traditional costume and groups of local people walk down to the fishing port, where the festivities continue.

The events organised include a recreation of a traditional fish auction, boat trips, tours of fishing vessels, workshops dedicated to traditional costume and activities on the water.

The festival ends with a procession and sardine roast.

OUR FISHWIVES

“ Desde Santurce a Bilbao vengo por toda la orilla, con la falda remangada, luciendo la pantorrilla… ” [“From Santurce to Bilbao all along the river bank I walk, with my skirt hitched up showing off my leg”]

This popular song recalls Santurtzi’s past and its renowned fishwives.

They were women with little formal education but great wisdom and character.

Apart from running their homes, they were responsible for selling fish. This supplementary income sometimes exceeded the wages earned by their husbands on the fishing boats.

Young girls would walk down to the port every morning to help their mothers and learn their trade.

After vying to obtain the best fish at the port they would race to be the first to sell their wares. That race extended to Bilbao and other nearby localities.

At first they walked barefoot, typically with their skirts hitched up and carrying baskets of fish weighing up to 20 kg on their heads. Then came the tramway, which made life easier for them.

Sardinera eguna

THE FEAST OF OUR LADY OF CARMEL

Santurtzi relives its seafaring past in its festivities and traditions.

The Feast of Our Lady of Carmel maintains the seafaring traditions of Santurtzi.

Santurtzi named her as its patron in 1907, after the mining district of Ortuella became a separate municipality.

Santurtzi has its eyes trained on the sea, so the “Stella Maris” or “Star of the Sea”, as Our Lady of Carmel is known, was a logical object of devotion.

The biggest day of the festivities is 16 July. It is on that date that Santurtzi holds its traditional seaborne procession in honour of its patron. This is the oldest procession of its kind in the Basque Country.

10 fishermen carry the statue of Our Lady of Carmel, decked out with flowers, from the Church of San Jorge to the fishing port.

On the quayside, the statue is hoisted aboard the barge Karmengo Ama Birjinia and sailed out onto the bay.

The official procession comprises 12 more vessels, but many others join in the floral offering made on the waters of the bay in remembrance of all the fishermen lost at sea throughout history.

People call out and sing songs in devotion to Our Lady throughout the procession. It is a thrilling spectacle.

Back on land, local dance troupes perform traditional dances in tribute to women, personified in the fishwives of Santurtzi.

SEAFARING TRADITIONS

Santurce, concha de oro, De Vizcaya la flor, De los mares la espuma, Del mundo la mejor

[“Santurtzi, golden shell / Flower of Biscay / Foam of the sea / Best in the world”]

This poem appears on a plaque on the Fishermen’s Guild building, the most iconic building in the town.

It is attributed to La Sotera, a famous fishwife known for her improvised poetry and songs about her day to day work and major events in Santurtzi.

To honour her, the town’s rowing club named its boat after her.

Sardioneras Santurce - Itsasoa Museoa

The Fishermen’s Guild building in the fishing port is also home to the SANTURTZI MUSEUM OF THE SEA and its interpretation centre, where the town’s fishwives feature prominently in the exhibits.

Along with the pictures, accounts and audiovisual presentations concerned with fishwives, the museum also has a replica of one of the fish baskets where they carried their sardines. These baskets were designed specifically for carrying mainly sardines and anchovies on foot.

The fishwives could carry up to 20 kg in each basket.

The auctions in which the fishwives bid for fish are no longer held, but a DRAMATISED RECREATION of one is staged at the museum.

SARDINE FISHING

The AGURTZA is a fishing boat drawn up on the WATERFRONT PROMENADE close to the Puente Bizkaia transporter bridge. It is one of the last traditional wooden vessels on these coasts, and is open to visitors.

It has been turned into a museum and interpretation centre. Guided tours include explanations of different fishing methods.

On the one hand seine net fishing for sardines and anchovy, and on the other hand traditional hook and line fishing for white tuna with live bait.

Bed and breakfast in santurtzi.

Some travelers are just looking for a place to crash at night. Not you, wise wanderer. Where you stay is an integral part of the destination itself. For you, we recommend a beautiful bed & breakfast. Before images of creaky Victorian houses and floral wallpaper creep into your mind, know that today’s B&B scene is a completely different story.

Today’s best bed n breakfast locations are sleek, modern, and geared toward sophisticated travelers seeking personalized service and beautiful accommodations. You can expect to set down your suitcase in a tastefully decorated room that can even include luxury additions like jetted tubs and rain showers. Downstairs, you’ll often find books, games, and a movie library for those days when you want to stay in with your friends or someone special.

Speaking of your main squeeze, a romantic bed and breakfast is the perfect honeymoon or anniversary getaway. Discover a B&B tucked away into beautiful natural surroundings, or spend time on a working farm where you can enjoy the full beauty of Santurtzi. Imagine yourself strolling through a lush garden and picnics with local gourmet fare. Oh, you two lovebirds!

Finally, we’ve got to talk about the other part of the B&B equation: breakfast! You deserve more than weak coffee and stale bagels. You deserve fresh buttermilk pancakes piled with ripe strawberries and dripping warm syrup. How about flakey croissants that almost melt in your mouth and fresh-squeezed orange juice? Bed and breakfasts definitely believe breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and they go all-out to make them worth waking up for.

On your next trip to Santurtzi, check out all of Travelocity’s bed and breakfast options. We can find you a cute boutique B&B for privacy and romance, or a B&B that will make your kids and pets feel like family.
