Big update coming on Turnpike with rebuild of travel plazas

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — The state Parkways Authority is on the verge of authorizing a more than $100 million redevelopment of the three travel plazas on the West Virginia Turnpike.

Parkways is working with internationally-known Areas USA which will be the new lease operator of the travel plazas beginning next February.

Part of that agreement calls for the redevelopment of the travel plazas at Bluestone in Mercer County, Beckley near Tamarack and the Morton Travel Plaza along Paint Creek in Kanawha County.

The Parkways Authority gave Parkways Executive Director Jeff Miller the okay to sign the final lease agreement during Tuesday’s meeting.

Miller said that new agreement focuses on the rebuild. He said the Bluestone and Beckley travel plazas will close in February.

“Beginning Feb. 1 and it will be an estimated 20 to 22 months of construction and we’re looking at the end of 2024 for opening,” Miller said.

Work will begin at the Morton facility after the other two are up and operating. The entire project could last up to 5 years.

Miller said the current travel plazas have been around for more than 30 years. He said it’s time for a whole new look.

“It’s an opportunity for us to highlight our tourist information centers, to highlight Tamarack and just promote the state in general,” Miller said, adding the designation of the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve in nearby Fayette County makes the rebuild even more important.

The new travel plaza at Beckley will be the centerpiece. Once finished it will have several restaurant choices including Wendy’s, Starbucks, Popeyes, a 24-hour convenience-type store along with an outdoor dining options with a permanent food truck-looking structure.

Miller said Beckley will also have 50 additional parking spaces for tractor trailers and 16 electric vehicle charging stations.

“It’s a phenomenal design,” Miller said. “It’s a whole site redevelopment.”

The work will also include the replacing of fuel tanks at the site.

Bluestone and Morton will have similar replacements of fuel tanks along with 8 EV stations, the 24-hour convenience store and more than one restaurant option.

The Parkways Authority has been putting away money for several years to pay for the project, Miller said.

“They’ve set aside into a capital account money for the redevelopment of the travel plazas and we were able, with Gov. Justice’s blessing, to go down this path,” Miller said.

The entire project is expected to exceed $132 million.

Parkways and Areas USA have been in meetings for most of this year with architects. The plans are expected to be close to final by October. Parkways will then put out an RFP and take in construction bids for the work in time for a February start.

Miller said the authority currently has ongoing maintenance expenses to keep the three plazas in acceptable condition.

“We spent almost a million dollars a year in maintenance on those facilities. So this will help alleviate some of that ongoing maintenance expense that we have,” he said.

Motorists will be encouraged to visit Tamarack for restroom facilities and eating options while the Beckley plaza is closed.

I chose this little travel convenience store because it's published gas prices were $.20 less per gallon than any other gas stations in a 25 mile radius. Plus I wanted legit truck stop coffee, not the national brand that the big travel center across the street uses. The two bigger travel centers off of the exit make finding this little guy a little challenging. But just be patient, drive a couple hundred feet further and you will see it on the right. Pulling up to the pump I noticed a sign advertising free coffee with the fuel purchase. Score! And indeed, the price for premium was less than the mid grade price across the street. The pump was painfully slow. I think it may have been just the one I was on, because other cars were in and out faster than I. But finally my tank was filled and I went inside to retrieve my free coffee. They ask you not to leave your car at the pump, which is understandable. I have sat in gas lines where people left their car and went inside for food, drink, bathroom, etc. It is very frustrating to those of us waiting in line. So I actually appreciated that they insist people park if they are going to enter the store. The young woman inside the store was very sweet. I asked her if they had matches, which they didn't, but she offered to give me her personal lighter for free. I declined but thought it was very nice of her to offer. Admittedly, finding the exit is a little frustrating. I actually made a complete circle around the store before I realized that you cannot exit the same way you entered, because of median strips in the road. It wouldn't hurt them to put up and exit sign or two. Anyway, a nice experience. The store was clean and well stocked, the staff was nice and there were not huge crowds or lines. I will remember this place the next time I make this drive.

In need of gas on a recent road trip through Pennsylvania, I found myself at the Exit 77 Travel Plaza. These travel plazas can always be a bit confusing as the lots are so extensive it is often times easy to get lost among the rows of tractor trailer trucks, pumps, and parking. The Exit 77 Travel Plaza no exception, my travel mate and I pulled up to the nearest pump after maneuvering around a bit. With the cheapest gas in the area (a good 10 cents cheaper than the other 2 or 3 stations) we were happy to not have to go out of the way for these savings. I ran inside to grab a bottle of water and to use the bathroom before departing. Following the signs for the bathroom, I found myself having to walk all the way through the store, leaving through the back exit, and locating it on the backside of the building. This is all well and good except you can't get back in through the exit and have to walk around the building again to enter (which when its raining isn't all that fun). Prices are reasonable within the store. They have a wide variety of items for all your roadside needs. Perhaps some better signage to exit the lot would be a bit handy. Otherwise, a solid location for a quick stop on the road.

I always love going to this gas station! Gas prices are usually slightly lower then the general area and if you fill up, you get a complimentary cup of coffee!!!! How nice is that! We need more places that show their customers they appreciate their business... The workers are always friendly and have heard that the owner treats them very well... If you use the restroom, you do have to walk around to the side of the store instead of going back through the back door- it's fine unless it's super freezing and windy Definitely recommend this place!!!!!! :)

I used to stop but parking is not good got yelled at for 6 minutes at the fuel island ,almost hit me wish he would've swung .at any rate I won't go back.

This is a clean store, the staff is kind.. they have a self serve lottery machine...as pointed out in a previous post- the parking lot is dicey.. difficult to exit, look out for big rigs... as gas as gasoline; yes it's cheap, my car goes through it faster than branded gas; so it's no savings
