Halong bay is one of the most selected destinations for every traveler coming to Vietnam and to the northern region in specific. Some choose to spend a few hours while many want to stay for a few nights to see as much of what the bay has to offer. Among these itineraries, 2-day-1-night cruising is the most popular and favorite option.

A 2D1N cruise means almost 24 hours on the bay. It is explained by the embarkation time at 12:00 pm and disembarkation time at around 11:00 am the next day of all overnight cruises. This itinerary provides a series of activities on and off the boat and the enchanting beauty of Halong Bay at different times of the day. Some may think that with just a short timeframe, it is challenging to explore the  bay's entire magnificent landscape. However, a wisely arranged time and itinerary will surely provide you with very enjoyable experiences for a fun-filled cruise vacation.

Activities included in a 2 day 1 night itinerary

Once arriving at the cruise port, you will be assisted with luggage check-in by the cruise operator. Then, the crew member will escort you to embark the boat. A refreshing welcome drink and safety briefing is usually given before you check in your cabin and enjoy lunch. During lunch, the cruise sails to the bay and proceeds to the first attraction.

In the afternoon, you are transferred to the first attraction by a small boat (tender). It could be a cave full of beautiful stalactites and stalagmites, an island with a sandy beach and panoramic view, or a cave submerged half by water and visited by a kayak. Some of the highlights are Surprise cave , Luon cave , Titop island , Dark-Bright cave , Tra Bau area, Ao Ech area, etc.

After the excursion, you can join a number of activities onboard or spend free time relaxing on the top deck with the perfect sunset view. After dinner, you'll have the option to engage in squid fishing, catch a movie, savor beverages from the bar, or unwind in the cabin.

Cruises may offer a Taichi or Yoga session on the sundeck where you can soak up the fresh air and release the tiredness in your body and mind. You later enjoy a light breakfast while the ship cruises to the next attraction. Afterwards, you have time to freshen up and pack your luggage, check out your cabin, settle the bill (if any), and back to the dining area to savor a hearty breakfast. The trip ends at around 11:00 am.

Pros and cons

Although cruising for 2 days and 1 night brings plenty of merits, some demerits cannot be denied.

Reasonable duration

Normally, you come from other locations and commuting back and forth to both destinations can consume several hours. Thus, a day cruise cruise feels hurried, leaving no room for relaxation. Conversely, a more extended two-night cruise excursion appears to strike the right balance, making it a safe and suitable choice for most travelers.

Affordable price

Obviously, overnight cruises cost more than day cruises and 1-night cruises cost less than 2-or-more night cruises. However, compared with the time you spend to travel from nearby regions to the bay, a 1-night itinerary is more valued for money.

Depending on each cruise, the itinerary may include 2 to 3 attractions. On day 1, there are 1 or 2 attractions in the afternoon excursion while on day 2, there is only 1 attraction in the morning excursion.

2. Does the boat cruise all the time during the trip?

No. The boat cruises through the bay and drops the anchor at the attractions for a visit and at the sleeping area at night. Boats are not allowed to operate during night time for safety reasons.

3. What is included in a night trip?

On the other hand, you don’t want to under-pack and fail to bring your essentials. No matter how or why you are traveling, knowing what to pack and what to leave at home will make your trip run as smoothly as possible.

• If you’re staying with friends or relatives, ask what they have on hand and if they’re willing to share. As a friendly gesture, offer to repay them with a meal, movie ticket, gift card, etc.

• Eyeliner/eyeshadow combo stick

Avoiding Overpacking

• Pack a small umbrella if the forecast calls for rain. If an unexpected deluge happens at a time that you absolutely must be outside, ask your host or front desk at the hotel if you can borrow a larger umbrella.

• Roll clothes that won’t wrinkle. These are usually tee-shirts, jeans, and casual clothes made of cotton. Place them in the bottom of your bag.
• Fold clothes that can wrinkle. This includes cotton dress shirts and anything made of silk or satin. Place them on top of rolled items.
• Fold longer articles in half. This includes trousers and long skirts. To create even layers, drape the top of the second article on top of the bottom of the first. [4] X Research source

Looking for budget weekend getaways in Malaysia that can be taken from KL? This guide will show you exactly where to go in Malaysia for a short trip!

Malaysia is an incredibly diverse country with so much to offer to any type of traveler. While Peninsular Malaysia is known for its bustling cities, historical towns and pristine beaches, Malaysia Borneo is known for its diverse wildlife, lush rainforest and spectacular mountain peaks. 

Although I’ve traveled to Malaysia on multiple occasions, I still have a lot more to explore. That’s why I’ve asked some of the best travel bloggers to share their top recommendations for the best places to visit in Malaysia for a short trip. 

So here’s a list of 20 weekend getaways in Malaysia (that can easily be taken from Kuala Lumpur) to help you plan a short but relaxing vacation in Malaysia!

Getting around Malaysia 

Being well connected with other Southeast Asian countries such as Singapore and Thailand, traveling to and within Malaysia is very cheap and easy. 

I recommend using either Easybook or  12go.asia  to book your transportation so you can easily compare the price of train and bus tickets and hence get the best deal. 

Alternatively, if you don’t want to spend hours on the bus or train during your short Malaysia getaway, AirAsia offers very cheap flights and usually has some pretty awesome deals if you book well in advance. 

Another option is to book a private transfer from KL to any destination in Malaysia.

Weekend Getaways in Peninsular Malaysia

Penang .

Penang Island is located in the northwest of Peninsular Malaysia. With a diverse cultural heritage that can be seen through its temples and mosques, historical buildings, interactive street art and world-class street food, Penang, also known as the food capital of Malaysia, is the perfect place to spend the weekend in Malaysia for foodies and history buff. 

The cheapest way to get to Penang  is by bus. There are also direct flights available from Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi and Singapore. The best time to visit Penang is between December and April. 

One of the top things to do in Penang is to go on a self-guided street art tour. The city of Georgetown is covered with an abundance of quirky and interactive murals that make for really fun photo backdrops!  

You can also take a tour of the Blue Mansion , visit Penang Hill ,  Penang Habitat , Kek Lok Si Temple, 3D Trick Art Museum or spend the evening on Chulia Street to feast on some tasty Malaysian food. 

Other   things to do include taking a dip in Batu Ferringhi beach, hiking Penang National Park or visiting the Botanical Gardens. 

Where to stay in Penang : The  Blue Mansion  is perfect for those who want to stay in a traditional Peranakan home. The hotel is located in the heart of Georgetown and includes free breakfast.

Melaka 

If you’re looking for a short Malaysia getaway from Kuala Lumpur that’s rich in history and culture, the UNESCO World Heritage city of Melaka (also spelled Malacca) is right up your alley! 

Melaka, sometimes referred to as the Amsterdam of Asia, is famous for its colonial architecture with Dutch, Portuguese and British influences, colorful river canals, a majestic floating mosque and night markets.

Although most people visit  Melaka as a day trip , there’s quite a lot to do to fill in a weekend, plus you can easily take the bus from KL to Malacca . Explore the Dutch Square to see all the major attractions such as the Christ Church, Saint Paul’s Hill, Stadthuys and A’Famosa Fort.  

You can also take a river cruise , hunt for street art in Melaka , visit the Maritime Naval Museum, take in the view from The Shore Sky Tower , watch the sunset at the Melaka Straits Mosque, have an adventure-filled day at the Skytrex Adventure and more! 

To sample some of the tastiest local dishes, make sure to visit the famous  Jonker Street night market which takes place every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Where to stay in Melaka : If you want to stay in a quiet neighborhood not too far from the main attractions,  Hotel Arissa  is perfect for you. They provide clean and comfy rooms with a large double bed and a private bathroom.

Situated in the state of Perak, Ipoh is one of the most underrated getaways in Malaysia! While exploring Ipoh, you’ll come across colorful and interactive murals, cute alleyways and beautiful cave temples etched into the limestone cliffs. 

You can easily  get to Ipoh from KL  or other major cities in Malaysia by either bus or train. For the best weather condition, plan your visit between December and April but avoid Chinese New Year if you don’t want to get stuck in traffic on your way to Ipoh! 

Start your trip by heading to Mural’s Art Lane which is covered with dozens of colorful street art before making your way to the Old Town, the center of all Ipoh attractions . 

In the Old Town, you’ll find Concubine Lane, a little alley flanked by cute cafes and shops selling souvenirs, clothes and delicious food.  Market Lane is also not to be missed with its colorful hanging umbrellas and interactive murals. 

If you have time, make sure to visit at least one cave temple. There are over 30 of them dotting every corner of Ipoh, some providing the most scenic views. Three of my favorite temples are Perak Tong, Kek Lok Tong and Sam Poh Tong. 

Finally, you can’t say you’ve been to Ipoh without sampling some delicious egg tarts accompanied by a cup of Ipoh white coffee! Follow the locals to either Nam Heong White Coffee or Kedai Kopi Sin Yoon Loong and you’ll be in for a treat! 

Where to stay in Ipoh : If you want to stay in the Old Town, I recommend Dé Cafe & Rest House . Alternatively,  Grayhaus Soho Ipoh  in the New Town offers budget single or double rooms, inclusive of breakfast.

Kuala Lumpur 

Featuring the world’s tallest twin towers, bustling neighborhoods, impressive temples and mosques and an omnipresent food scene, Kuala Lumpur or KL is the perfect place to visit for a short vacation in Malaysia. 

The city is found about 50 minutes from the airport and can be reached by bus, train or Grab taxi.  

The starting point for exploring Kuala Lumpur is Bukit Bintang  where you can do some cheap shopping and eat to your heart’s content at the famous Jalan Alor Night Market. 

From Bukit Bintang, take the air-conditioned walkway that leads to the Petronas Twin Towers. I recommend visiting at night to see the towers light up just in time for the lake symphony show. 

You can also visit the KL Tower and KL Forest Eco Park (one of KL’s top Instagram spots ) where you can walk along a canopy bridge surrounded by the only remaining rainforest in KL city center. Aquaria KLCC , Chinatown KL , Little India and the  Batu Caves  are also not to be missed on any Kuala Lumpur itinerary as well as a visit to the impressive Thean Hou Temple. 

Where to stay in Kuala Lumpur : There are lots of options for infinity pool hotels in KL but if you’re on a tight budget, I recommend Gold 3 Boutique Hotel . It features stylish and modern rooms and is a cheap place to stay in Bukit Bintang.

Sekinchan 

Anyone visiting Malaysia is likely to stop by Kuala Lumpur. While the city is amazing, it can feel too busy for some. Luckily for visitors looking for a relaxing weekend getaway in Malaysia, there’s the small fishing village of  Sekinchan , located only two hours away. 

Sekinchan is considered the hidden gem of Malaysia. It wasn’t until recently that it started to receive an influx of tourists due to the popular TVB drama “Outbound Love”.  

What’s so special about this peaceful fishing village is the rice fields that lie on its perimeter. Acres of stunning and lush rice fields cover the eastern outskirts of town, stretching beyond the eye’s reach. When admiring these rice paddies, an unknowing traveler might even think that he or she is in Bali ! 

Just remember to visit when the rice paddies are in full bloom, or else you might not see anything at all. March to May and September to November are considered the best time to visit. 

Many visitors do a  Sekinchan day trip , enjoying the rice paddies during the day, relaxing on the Redang beach at sunset, and enjoying some fresh seafood before heading home. However, I would advise staying for a whole weekend to relax and enjoy some of the attractions of the neighboring town such as the  fireflies tour  and  Sky Mirror  in Kuala Selangor.

Where to stay in Sekinchan : If you’re spending the weekend in Sekinchan, make sure to book a stay at  Villa Chee for the best rice field view!

Cameron Highlands

Cameron Highlands is the perfect place to escape for a couple of days and enjoy some time in the mountains. It’s well known for its endless beautiful tea fields that cover the rolling hills and valleys.  

The local busses are a cheap and easy way to get to Cameron Highlands  and run regularly from major hubs such as Kuala Lumpur and Penang. 

You can visit all year round but January and February are the months with the least rainfall, so you may want to visit then. The best thing to do in  Cameron Highlands  is to explore the local tea fields.  

There are several hikes in the area or you can visit some of the tea plantations. BOH Plantation  is one of the most popular due to the beautiful scenery surrounding the tasting room. 

The region is also known for growing lavender, strawberries and other fresh produce with lots of markets and shops selling local goods, making it the perfect place to go for a short trip in Malaysia!

Where to stay in Cameron Highlands : A great option for those staying on a budget is The Cave Guesthouse which is a 10-minute walk from the town center.

Port Dickson

Port Dickson is probably one of the best weekend getaway destinations due to its close proximity to cities like Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. It’s also a region that’s well-known for its picturesque beaches, quaint colonial architecture, and breathtaking natural attractions. 

Within easy reach of Kuala Lumpur and Singapore, most tourists and locals get to Port Dickson by private transport . However, public transportation from Singapore is more straightforward with the availability of direct coaches such as the Golden Coach Express or KKKL Express. It’s also easy to arrange a transfer from Kuala Lumpur airport . 

January and February are the best months to  visit Port Dickson if you want to avoid the wet season. As this is the peak season, it’s best to visit in early March and perhaps to take note of the auspicious dates of the Lunar New Year as this is when locals from Singapore, Malaysia and other neighboring Asian countries would be on holiday. 

Aside from lying on one of the beaches across Port Dickson’s 18-km coastline, one of the best things to do is to pay a visit to the oldest lighthouse in Tanjung Tuan and use this location as a starting point for a hike through a verdant jungle trail. Once you’ve reached the peak, do not turn back. Instead, follow the descending trail that leads you to a secret bay with granite formations amid gleaming blue waters. 

Other things to do in Port Dickson include taking a boat tour and visiting the Alive 3D Art Gallery .

Where to stay in Port Dickson : Port Dickson has a variety of accommodations that suit all types of travelers. For those looking for a luxurious break, the Grand Lexis Dickson with its sea chalets and swimming pools is highly recommended. A cheaper option would be the Glory Beach Resort with its serviced apartments, pool, and private beach.

Johor Bahru  

Johor Bahru is located in the southernmost point of Malaysia – just on the border with Singapore and is great for a short getaway in Malaysia with kids.

The city has excellent shopping and restaurants and everything is much less expensive compared with Singapore . 

If you’re traveling as a family, Johor Bahru is the perfect place! Your kids will be spoiled for choice of fun – LEGOLAND Malaysia  or Hello Kitty Town. We spent the whole day in LEGOLAND enjoying the rides and other activities, and guess what was the best – no queues! You can fully enjoy the rides instead of waiting for them.

If this isn’t enough, you can always go from  Johor Bahru to Singapore , the trip takes max 45 minutes (by local bus), and Singapore has everything you can imagine! 

Where to stay in Johor Bahru : If you travel as a family to Johor Bahru, you should stay in the LEGOLAND Malaysia Hotel . Alternatively, if you’re traveling as a couple, the brand-new Z Hotel is a great choice! It’s conveniently located in the heart of Johor Bahru close to shopping malls and restaurants with mouthwatering food – especially at “Flowers in the Window” restaurant.

Langkawi .

Located off the west coast of Malaysia, Langkawi is a stunning archipelago of 104 islands with waterfalls, gorgeous white-sand beaches, turquoise waters and lush rainforest. 

Langkawi is a great destination all year round but the best time to visit is between November and March during the dry season when the days are beautifully sunny.  

You can reach Langkawi either by air or by ferry – there are  direct flights from Kuala Lumpur , Singapore and Penang, or you can reach Langkawi by ferry from Penang Island or from Kuala Perlis on the mainland.  

There are heaps of fun  things to do on Langkawi’s main island  and it’s perfect for a short Malaysia getaway. Take a ride on one of the world’s steepest cable cars to get amazing panoramic views of the islands from the  magnificent Skybridge . After you’re done, make your way to Seven Wells Waterfall which is found within walking distance of the Skybridge or head over to Skytrek Adventure Langkawi for an adventure-filled day.

The  Kilim Karst Geoforest Park is a beautiful UNESCO heritage site and home to mangroves, macaque monkeys and eagles. 

If you like water sports, head to one of Langkawi’s many beaches to go parasailing or jet boating or jump on an  island hopping tour  to enjoy some diving or snorkeling. The island is also duty-free and there are lots of shopping centers selling bargain clothing and alcohol. 

Where to stay in Langkawi : There are accommodation options to suit all budgets here. Check out the mid-range priced Berjaya Resort – spacious chalets situated on the beach on the edge of the rainforest with restaurants, bars and an outdoor pool. For a more budget option, there’s  Chenang Inn  found only a few minutes from Cenang beach.

Tioman Island 

Just off the southeast coast of Peninsular Malaysia lies the beautiful island Tioman, ideal for a short vacation in Malaysia! This wonderful speck in the ocean offers amazing beaches, tropical forests and laidback villages.  

Note that Tioman can only be visited between March and October, the island is closed off to tourists during monsoon season (November to February).  

Getting to Tioman invariably involves a boat trip as there’s no airport (anymore) on the island. There are two jumping-off points for Tioman Island: Mersing and Tanjung Gemok. Ferry departures depend on the tide and weather conditions.  

Tioman is a great place for scuba diving as well as snorkeling as the ocean around it is marked as a marine reserve. It’s an excellent place to get your PADI as dive prices are very reasonable and you’ll see plenty of colorful fish and corals while learning how to dive.  

Other things to do in Tioman include relaxing on one of the pretty beaches, hiking through the jungle and watching the monitor lizards and monkeys roam around the tiny towns.  

Where to stay in Tioman : A good place to stay in Salang (my favorite village on Tioman) is Ella’s Place, a simple but lovely budget accommodation on the north side of town. There are small bungalows with fan or aircon, no hot water but with the tropical Tioman temperatures this isn’t really necessary.

Redang Island 

Redang Island is a gorgeous destination located off the east coast of Malaysia near Kuala Terengganu.  It’s located in a protected marine park and is perfect for people wanting to explore nature with its jungle-filled interior, fantastic coastline and coral surrounded exterior. 

There’s no bridge to Redang and only charter flights operate here which means you need to catch a ferry across from Kuala Terengganu or  Merang . Ferries are quick and easy and this is part of the fun of visiting Redang. Once on the island, you’ll generally get around by foot, kayak or boat since there aren’t many roads. 

Redang has two seasons – dry and monsoon. You should avoid the monsoon season as ferry rides to the island stop and the island basically shuts down. For this reason, visit Redang from late March to October. 

Most of Redang’s things to do center around nature. You can dive, snorkel, kayak, swim, explore the island by boat or trek across, play volleyball and other land and water sports.  

During the turtle hatching season from April to October, you can even release baby turtles. Of course, you can also relax on one of the gorgeous beaches. 

Where to stay in Redang : Note that Redang isn’t a budget destination and it’ll cost you more than the mainland. A good option for bargain seekers is  Redang De’ Rimba  as long as you don’t mind not having direct beach access. You can find more information about visiting Redang  here .

Pangkor Island 

If you’re wondering where to go in Malaysia for a short trip, make sure to visit Pangkor Island, Malaysia’s little local paradise. It’s the ideal island getaway since it’s situated only a few hours from Kuala Lumpur. Yet it’s still very overlooked by tourists. Pangkor Island is for those who seek quiet beach life and fun scooter adventures. 

It’s easy to get to Pangkor – from Kuala Lumpur, it’s a 4-hour bus ride to Lumut  where the ferry leaves for the island every half hour. You can visit Pangkor Island all year round, but you might want to steer clear of the rainy season from October to December. The island is also very popular among local tourists, so avoid the busy holiday season. 

The west side of the island has beautiful beaches and often accommodates the few tourists who visit, whereas the right side has more of a local feel. 

There are many things to do on Pangkor Island apart from relaxing on the beach. You can rent a kayak, go jungle trekking, visit the local fishermen’s village or simply go explore on a scooter. On the island, you can find a Hindu temple, a Chinese temple, and a floating mosque which are worth a visit.  

Where to stay on Pangkor Island : Pangkor Waterfall Beach Resort is a budget-friendly option for those who want to stay close to Coral Beach, good restaurants and wildlife.

Perhentian Islands 

The Perhentian Islands are located on the quiet east coast of Malaysia. Perfect for a short vacation in Malaysia, the islands are famous as a haven for snorkeling and scuba diving .

The Perhentian Islands are split into two inhabited islands known as  Perhentian Besar  (the big island) and Perhentian Kecil (the small island). Both offer different vantage points to explore the abundant marine and wildlife in the region.  

For travel to and from the islands, it’s easy to find boats leaving from Besut  and make sure to book in advance as accommodation is limited and somewhat exclusive on the island. It’s also best to visit during the dry season (April to September). 

One of the best spots has to be Teluk Pauh Beach where the coral reefs run right up to the sands, with ridiculously diverse marine life! Just a short swim out, you’ll find “turtle point” which is a famous snorkeling spot in Malaysia to swim with sea turtles.  

The beaches as well are pristine with golden sand, the interiors of the island are dense with forest and the wildlife, such as silvered leaf-langurs, mingle on the shores.  

Where to stay on Perhentian Islands : A great place to stay is the  Perhentian Islands Resort on Teluk Pauh Beach which has its own jetty for arrivals from the mainland.

Kapas Island 

Kapas Island is one of the best places you could visit for a weekend in Malaysia. It’s a stunning island located off the east coast and due to its hidden nature, it remains empty most of the year. Because of this, the coral reefs remain intact unlike many contrasting locations in Malaysia such as the Perhentian Islands. 

Kapas Island is best visited from March to October as storms can hit in the other months. It’s a short flight or 7-hour bus ride into  Kuala Terengganu from Kuala Lumpur . Afterward, take a taxi to Marang Jetty and a 15-minute boat journey to the island itself. Alternatively, buses are available in Kuala Terengganu from all major locations in Malaysia. 

One of the best things to do is to take a snorkel and swim on the colorful reefs. Alternatively, boat tours are available to further locations. If you’d prefer to dive, it’s very cheap costing less than US$ 300 for your PADI open water. If you prefer dry land, there’s a hike through the jungle to the beaches on the opposite side of the island. 

Where to stay on Kapas Island : There are many beautiful places to stay, but I have to recommend Qimi’s Chalet. It has a private beach where it hosts candlelit barbeque dinners in the evening. The rooms are like treehouses and have a rustic feel. But if you prefer something more modern, do consider Turtle Valley Resort.

Rawa Island 

Rawa Island, translated in the local dialect as ‘white doves’ is the very definition of peace. This picture-perfect tropical island resort within the Sultan Iskandar Marine Park off the east coast of Malaysia is perfect for a short relaxing getaway.  

The white sand, verdant groves and warm, clear waters feel like a world away from the stress of modern life. And yet this idyllic haven is just a 30-minute speedboat ride from Mersing in the province of Johor. Rawa Island is hugely appealing between February and October for a family break or romantic paradise getaway.  

Rawa’s main attraction is the opportunity to immerse yourself in the natural surroundings, to kick back and unwind on its soft-sand beaches under the never-ending sun. For those rare moments of activity, take a short stroll along its coastal walkways or snorkel its coral reef.  

If this isn’t enough, there’s always the resort spa for indulgent pampering as you gaze across the calming ocean beyond.  

At the end of each day, Rawa will reward you not only with a fabulous feast from the restaurants but also a splendid sunset. Ideal to enjoy with a glass or two of something cold and refreshing, Rawa will no doubt leave many wonderful memories.

Short Getaways in Malaysia Borneo

Kuching .

An easy getaway from Kuala Lumpur is Kuching, one of the most charming and action-packed towns in Sarawak and a perfect place to start a  Borneo itinerary . 

The only feasible way is  flying from Kuala Lumpur  or Penang with the cheap AirAsia flights. You can come to Kuching pretty much any time of the year, but avoid the period between November and February when the rainy seasons make the task of exploring the surrounding jungles a wet mess. Also, in July it’s the time for the iconic Rainforest World Music Festival — this is a fantastic music event, but also a time when Kuching is packed, and accommodation prices skyrocket. 

Kuching itself has plenty of charming lanes packed with bars and a beautiful waterfront set next to the Sarawak River. Take the bridge across to Fort Margherita, where an excellent gallery resumes the history of the Brookes, the White Rajahs of Sarawak.

In half an hour from Kuching is Semenggoh’s Orangutan sanctuary , a must-visit place to get close and personal with one of the world’s most endangered primates. 

There are also many national parks around Kuching: Bako National Park , set on a rugged promontory is ideal for a 2 days/1 night trip to properly explore its many hiking trails.  

If you come at the right time, the Gunung Gading National Park near Lundu is a perfect place to spot Rafflesia, the world’s biggest (and foulest-smelling) flower. If you still have time, a trip to Mount Santubong or the endlessly empty beaches of Tanjung Datu National Park will bring you off the grid in an already pretty offbeat Malaysian destination.

Sandakan might not be on everybody’s bucket list, but after visiting a couple of years ago, it now ranks really high on our list of recommendations!  

It’s easily accessible with  direct flights from Kuala Lumpur , as well as other Malaysian cities such as Kota Kinabalu.

The best time of year for visit is between May and August, but traveling in the shoulder months of April or even March means fewer crowds, cheaper prices and less rain. 

Not only is Sandakan a beautiful and peaceful little city with great food and friendly people, but it also serves as a perfect place to base yourself for a bunch of really exciting activities! 

Not to be missed is a visit to Turtle Island National Park , where you get to experience all of the important conservation efforts going on there while also enjoying an almost off-grid retreat on the paradise island! 

Alternatively, just south of Sandakan is Kinabatangan River , with a couple of nights’ stay at an incredible river-side lodge, a few wildlife river cruises, all of your meals and a visit to the Sepilok Orangutan Center often included in the tour!  

Where to stay in Sandakan : We chose to stay at Sandakan Central Hotel as we were wanting somewhere affordable but still in a desirable location, and we were pleasantly surprised by it!

Bako National Park 

Bako National Park is situated in the Sarawak region of Borneo and features some of the most unique wildlife and natural rock formations. 

The closest city to Bako National Park is Kuching. It’s easy to get from Kuching to Bako National Park as there are buses that go there directly. Take the number one red public bus that departs from the Kuching Waterfront area, opposite the Riverside Shopping Complex. 

It’s best to visit Bako National Park in the dry season from March to September. Keep in mind that it tends to get very hot in July, so make sure to stay hydrated. 

There are many hiking trails to explore, ranging from easy to more strenuous hikes. In addition to the hiking trails, wildlife is abundant, and visitors are guaranteed to see some animals. If you’re lucky enough you may even spot a proboscis monkey! 

Depending on the hike you choose, you may need to pay to catch a boat back to the entrance. The boat trip back is amazing though, as you get to sail past the Serpent Rock.

Where to stay : There aren’t many accommodations close to Bako National Park, so if you’re on a budget, plan to stay in Kuching – Imperial Riverbank Hote l is a great mid-range option. Kuching is a great place to stay as there are amazing food options to refuel after a day on the trails.

Mulu National Park 

Mulu National Park is difficult to get to, but a world away from regular Malaysia and well worth the trip. There are stunning caves, hiking trails, ecotourism activities and extreme adventures. Plan ahead with the National Park guides to include canopy experiences, a visit to the Deer or Clearwater caves and definitely arrange to be there for the dusk exodus of the bats from the caves.  

The night walk with rangers is definitely recommended! One of the joys of visiting Mulu is that the sheer numbers of bats mean that there are no mosquitoes!  

There’s no specific best time to visit although July to September is the dry season and will be hotter, so is best avoided if you’re planning on doing strenuous hikes – this is also the peak season to visit and will be busiest. 

There are three ways to get to  Mulu National Park   the riverboat trip (only in the wet season), hiking the several days’ long Headhunters Trail or the more practical way for a weekend getaway in Malaysia, by flying in from Miri.  The airstrip is walkable to virtually all accommodation and there are transport options also available at the airstrip.  

Where to stay : You can choose to stay inside the National Park in the park accommodation, which you can book directly through the Park offices  here  but this can be limited. A recommended homestay option that you can pre-book is Mulu Village .

Kota Kinabalu 

The State of Sabah in Malaysia is famous for its beaches, forests, wildlife and water activities. Kota Kinabalu , the capital city of Sabah, reflects the beauty of the state.  

Kota Kinabalu is a heady combination of art, history, shopping, beaches and parties. From experience, we can say it’s one of the most tourist-friendly cities we’ve visited. If you’re looking for a short break, a visit to Kota Kinabalu could be a rejuvenating experience. 

You can get to Kota Kinabalu from KL  by taking a 2.5-hour flight. Cabs are the best way to get around the city. The weather is moderate throughout the year with regular showers keeping the heat at bay.

Things to see and do include Masjid Bandaraya Kota Kinabalu, the City Mosque. Surrounded by water, the Mosque is a beautiful example of modern Islamic architecture.  

Another attraction is the Sabah Museum. They have several displays of history, art, textiles, ethnography, archaeology and even a heritage village. You can also visit Tanjung Aru Beach late afternoon for the most beautiful sunset, providing a gorgeous assortment of colors.  

There are many cool cafes and bars and The Waterfront is the most popular hangout zone for locals and tourists. If you’re in the mood for shopping, Imago Mall has a variety of stores. 

Where to stay : One of the best places to stay in Kota Kinabalu is Hotel Avangio  which is moderately priced with comfortable rooms with enough facilities, including a pool. 

Pro-tip : There are some amazing trekking, water sports and diving destinations around Kota Kinabalu.

The whole experience was really fun. The tour guide from Tanawin- Raymond was the best, ge really helped us a lot to feel comfortable and worry free the whole trip. Husin Fauzi Farm

Located in the heart of Kuala Selangor, Husin Fauzi Farm is a farm that has over 40 species of animals and offers a range of activities for children and families to enjoy. The farm has a petting zoo where visitors can interact with a variety of animals, including ponies, cows, goats, and rabbits. Children can also go horseback riding and participate in animal feeding. In addition to these activities, the farm also offers archery as a fun and exciting activity for visitors. Taman Alam Kuala Selangor

This nature park is home to a myriad of flora and fauna, including rare species of birds and butterflies. There are 156 species of birds of which 57 of them migrated from Siberia and Russia. The best time to visit would be around September to April, where this park will be the migration point for birds abroad so visitors can plan their visit around this time for bird watching activities. Some of the local bird species include stork, mangrove blue flycatcher, kingfisher, black eagle, while the migrated birds consist of purple heron, great eagle, tiger shrike, arctic shrike and more! Visitors are also recommended to bring binoculars for bird watching! Opens from 9 am till 6 pm everyday, visitors can take a leisure walk along the rainforest or mangrove trails and enjoy the peaceful surroundings.

Kelip-Kelip Kampung Kuantan

This popular attraction is a must-visit for anyone interested in observing the fireflies that inhabit the mangroves of Kuala Selangor. The fireflies that inhabit this mangrove is the ‘pteroptyx tener’ species and they produce the lights simultaneously with three blinks per second. The boatmen will also use traditional boats and paddle to avoid noise pollution that will disturb the fireflies’ habitat. Opens from 7.30 pm until 10.30 pm every day, visitors can take a boat ride through the mangroves and marvel at the beautiful light display.

Laluan Seni Pekan Lama

Laluan Seni Pekan Lama is an arts and cultural trail located in Pekan Lama, which is a town in Kuala Selangor. The trail is filled with 15 heritage-based art and murals on the walls of older buildings in the town, complete with a colourful path. Some of the more prominent artwork there are named Bunga Artistik by artists; Izwan Rahimi, Fendi Rosli and Andi Syafie; and Lombong Bijih Timah by CO2 Mural. Several artists with diverse backgrounds, such as Fendigua, Husna Helmee and Loque, also contributed to the creation of the unique and beautiful murals. The trail is very instagrammable and great for OOTD pictures!

Masjid Raja Lumu

Masjid Raja Lumu is another landmark built in Kuala Selangor which was erected on the site of the former Kuala Selangor Old Mosque. This mosque was inaugurated by Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah Alhaj as the 9th royal mosque in Selangor. It is located at the foot of Melawati Hill and known for its beautiful modern architecture, copper domes, big archways and stained glass windows. The name of this Mosque was chosen in honour of the first Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Salehuddin Shah. This mosque is conveniently located near Kelip-kelip Kg Kuantan and Melawati Hill, making it a great addition to your travel itinerary.

Sasaran Art Gallery

Sasaran Art Gallery is an art gallery located at a small fishing village in Kuala Selangor called Sasaran village that brings the local art community together through various art exhibitions and workshops whether internationally or locally such as the Sasaran International Ceramic Art Workshop 2019 and Sasaran Artist Residency 2019. This restaurant specialises in serving nasi ambeng, a traditional Javanese cuisine. Nasi ambeng is a dish that consists of rice, chicken, fried noodles, stir-fried tempeh, and tofu, all made in different recipes for variations of side dishes. It is a popular and flavourful dish enjoyed by many people in Indonesia and Malaysia.

TK Coconut Farm Ville

Located at Tanjung Karang, this food-court-concept farm offers a variety of coconut-based food like coconut shakes, coconut jelly, and ice cream. They also have stalls serving hot food selections with heavy meals and light snacks for visitors. This farm is a great spot to replenish after visiting the tourist attractions of Kuala Selangor.

Warung Ketupat Kampung Permatang

This restaurant is a great breakfast spot that serves a delicious traditional Malay dish called Ketupat, which is usually eaten during Eid. The Ketupat is cooked in leaves and best enjoyed with rendang, kuah lodeh or peanut gravy! They also serve another ultimate local delicacy, satay! This restaurant will reminisce your Eid morning.

Auntie Foo Café

With a pork-free kopitiam menu that covers dishes like your classic kaya toast, egg sandwich and coffee, Auntie Foo Café is another good breakfast place. The Best 2 Day Melaka Itinerary: Things To Do (Malacca)

Melaka is a historically rich city in Malaysia with old heritage buildings, modern cafes and fascinating street art all spread around a narrow river splitting the city. In this 2 day Melaka itinerary, we’re going to show you the best things to do, where to stay and how to get around with many extra tips along the way !

During your 2 days in Melaka, you can experience the blend of old and new between the colourful streets and incredible culture as Melaka is one of the oldest cities in Malaysia.

The city has plenty of well-preserved Dutch, British and Portuguese buildings in the form of churches and now, museums. Most of the best things to do in Melaka are around Jalan Hang Jebat ( Jonker Walk ) and it’s easy to walk around the historic city.

Melaka completely surprised us in Malaysia! It was one of the cities we almost skipped as we weren’t continuing to Singapore and didn’t know if the round trip from Kuala Lumpur would be worth it. But, trust us – it is! It’s definitely worth spending at least 2 days in Melaka but it is also possible on a day trip from Kuala Lumpur with a guide !

Is it Melaka or Malacca? You may have noticed Melaka is also known as Malacca. Melaka is the capital city of Malacca which is a Malaysian state. We also saw that the city used to be referred to as Malacca City. It’s a little confusing, but here’s our 2 day Melaka itinerary!

Where to stay in Melaka

Melaka is a large city, but the areas of interest are all around the Old Town . The best area to stay in Melaka is near Jonker Street (Jalan Hang Jebat) . Prices of accommodation are very affordable in Malaysia, so staying within walking distance won’t be a problem, even if you’re on a budget.

We stayed in Haven Inn for 4 nights in Melaka but it looks like they’ve stopped taking bookings for the moment in 2024. We’ve included it just in case they re-open!

How to get around Melaka

Melaka city centre is very walkable and easy to get around. There’s one spot on this 2 day Melaka itinerary that will require a Grab, which is also an easy way to get around Melaka!

• Bus  – There are buses in Melaka, however, you’ll only need to take one when arriving at Melaka Sentral .
• Trishaw’s – You’ll find these dotted around the city, they are touristy and usually more expensive than a Grab, but trishaws are a fun way to get around!
• Taxi & Grab  – Grab is a great way to get around Melaka if your destination is out of the main touristy city centre. Download the app!
• Car  – Browse prices for car rentals on Discover Cars !

We used Grab to get from Melaka Sentral to the city centre of Melaka when we arrived by bus from Kuala Lumpur!

2 Day Melaka Itinerary: Best Things To Do (2024)

During this Melaka 2 day itinerary, we’ll show you how to plan your trip and what’s achievable in 2 days. You can switch these days around or mix them up, but here’s our Melaka travel guide for you!

Some of the main things to do are quite close together and we’ve spread them out over 2 days, so if there’s a point of interest we don’t mention on the first day, you’ll see it on the second day!

Day 1 – The Art & History of Melaka, River Cruise & Night Market

When arriving in Melaka, the bus station ( Melaka Sentral ) is a little outside of the city centre. Search for a Grab on the app to make your way to the historic centre (near Jonker Walk). We’ve included our accommodation recommendations above, but The Cozy Place by Nestcove is perfect for this 2 day Melaka itinerary.

We highly recommend trying Chin Hua for lunch as you can grab as much food as you like from the buffet and you pay by weight and selected items! We ate here several times during our Melaka trip!

The cafe culture in Melaka is incredible, similar to other popular Malaysian cities! You’ll find cosy cafes with different specialities, themes and cuisines! Malay, Chinese and Indian food is popular to find here and you’ll also have a few Western options.

Search for Street Art in Melaka

As you start to walk around the city you’ll notice the beautiful old shop-houses and the colour blasting through the streets. Melaka was first colonised by the Portuguese followed by the Dutch and then the British.

Amongst all the mixed influences, you can find amazing street art. Most of the art is spread out near the streets of Jonker Walk . We encourage you to just wander around!

• Kiehl’s Colourful Wall – The perfect backdrop for photos in Melaka ( location )
• Melaka Street Art (The Well) – An alleyway filled with lovely murals ( location )
• The Orangutan House – A cafe with an Orangutan mural ( location )
• Murals near the River – When walking down the river look out for murals on the buildings, you’ll find some behind The Old Merchant and various other spots! ( location )

Admire the views on Tan Kim Seng Bridge

Once you’ve had a browse at some of the street murals in Melaka, head over to the Tan Kim Seng Bridge and walk across to the east side of Melaka to discover some history.

The main highlights are close together, so there’s a high chance you’ll be crossing this bridge a few times to get over the river. The views from Tan Kim Seng Bridge look beautiful day and night!

Visit the Dutch Square 

The Dutch Square is also known as the ‘Red Square’ in Melaka and it’s hard to miss on your 2 day Melaka itinerary. You’ll be greeted with bright red colonial buildings as soon as you walk over the bridge!

Christ Church Melaka

One of the buildings you’ll see is the Dutch Church which was built in 1753! It’s one of the most popular landmarks in Melaka and worth checking out alongside the other colonial buildings.

Stadthuys was built by the Dutch as a building with office rooms, similar to a city hall. It is now the Museum of History and Ethnography with a history of Melaka and many historic artefacts. There’s a small entrance fee to enter:

• Malaysian residents: 5 MYR for adults and 2 MYR for children.
• Foreign visitors: 10 MYR for adults and 4 MYR for children.

Queen Victoria’s Fountain

In the heart of Dutch Square is Queen Victoria’s Fountain which was actually built by the British! There’s also an I Love Melaka sign !

Tan Beng Swee Clock Tower

Next to the Stadthuys is the Tan Beng Swee Clock Tower which was purchased by a wealthy Chinese family and given to the city of Melaka. The clock was also built by the British and it blends in perfectly with the other Dutch buildings in the square!

Walk down the River

During your Melaka 2 day itinerary, definitely take the time to fully explore the streets along the river. There are cute riverside cafes, bars and restaurants and many boardwalks to discover!

For this Melaka itinerary, head south down the river ( which is the wide area ) passing by Melaka Fort .

Admire the Giant Ship

Right next to the river, you’ll find the Muzium Samudera (Flor de La Mar) located on the east side near the Melaka River Cruises . The Muzium Samudera is a museum inside a giant ship! We didn’t visit inside the ship but there’s lots of information about the history of Melaka and the river.

Go on a Sunset River Cruise in Melaka

One of the best things to do in Melaka is to go on a river cruise through the city. You can take tours at any time throughout the day (9 AM – 11 PM), but sunset may be the best time to go!

Head to the Melaka River Park and Cruise building to buy a ticket and hop on a ride! There can be quite a long queue during weekends but it moves quickly. The tour is around 30 to 45 minutes long and costs around RM25 .

Visit Jonker Street Night Market (Friday to Sunday)

If you have any energy left on the first day of your 2 days in Melaka, it’s time to hit up the famous Jonker Street Night Market in Melaka. The night market only runs on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays but the street and most shops are open during the weekdays too.

Jonker Street Night Market is full of incredible food, souvenirs, clothes and music! As it’s on a weekend, it’s usually very busy and you’ll find a big atmosphere in the area. Note – We didn’t find many vegan options.

Pahlawan Walk Night Market is another night market to visit during your 2 days in Melaka, however, this also runs from Friday to Sunday.

Day 2 – Shops, Temples, History & Mosques

Start your day near Jonker Walk and find a cosy cafe for breakfast! We opted for a Chinese-style breakfast from Shui Xian Su Shi Yuan Vegetarian as they open at 7:30 am!

Shop around Jonker Street in Daylight

During your 2 days in Melaka, you have to check out Jonker Street in the daytime! The area is full of boutique shops, old colonial buildings and amazing food choices. We found a spot selling coconut ice cream which is the best in hot weather!

There are a few places of interest around the area of Jonker Street such as museums and temples. Here are a few you can check out whilst you’re wondering around the shops:

• Sri Poyyatha Vinayaga Moorthy Temple
• Melaka San Duo Temple
• Cheng Ho’s Cultural Museum
• Kampung Kling Mosque

Visit Cheng Hoon Temple

Another temple that you can find near Jonker Street is Cheng Hoon Temple! This Buddhist temple is on the same street as the Malay Kampung Kling Mosque and Hindu Sri Poyyatha Vinayaga Moorthy Temple which shows the diverse religions in Malaysia!

Cheng Hoon Temple is a historic Chinese temple built in the 17th century. The interior of the temple is more impressive than the outside and there’s beautiful architecture and carvings throughout! It’s also one of the oldest functioning temples in Malaysia.

Walk around Little India

To add to the culture of your Melaka itinerary, head to Little India for a tasty lunch and a walk around the neighbourhood. It is one of the smallest Little Indias in Malaysia, so it won’t take long to browse the area.

We recommend Restoran Saravanna for lunch as we ate there multiple times on our trip! There’s also a Little India sign to look out for!

Admire the Church of Saint Paul

After fueling up on food in Little India, walk up St Paul’s Hill ( slowly if you’re still digesting ), it only takes 5 minutes! You’ll see some of Melaka’s many museums here, Muzium Yang di-Pertua Negeri Melaka and Melaka Sultanate Palace Museum .

One of the most interesting antique buildings we came across during our Melaka itinerary is St. Paul’s Church. It’s t he oldest church in Malaysia and the region of Southeast Asia , which is crazy to think about! St Paul’s Church was built in the 1500s and is now one of Melaka’s famous ruins.

The rustic building no longer has a roof and although it’s well-preserved, it’s free to the public, so you can browse in and around the building with no supervision.

You can find tombstones within the building and there’s also an old lighthouse and a statue of St Xavier next to the old church. As the church sits on top of a hill, you can watch over the city of Melaka from gaps in the trees! It’s a very peaceful area in the morning or evening when it’s quieter.

Visit the A Famosa (Fortress)

A few minutes walk away down some stairs you’ll come across Melaka Fort , also known as A Famosa ! A Famosa means ‘The Famous’ in Portuguese !

The fortress isn’t in the best shape anymore after the British demolished most of it, however, it still holds so much history! Porta de Santiago (the gate to the fortress) is one of the parts still standing and is a highlight! We recommend visiting during your Melaka 2 day itinerary.

Take a break at Dataran Pahlawan Shopping Mall

This part of the itinerary is optional but if it’s a hot day, a walk around the mall is a great idea! We took the opportunity to cool down and grab a drink inside – there are so many things to do in Melaka, so it’s good to rest in between!

Dataran Pahlawan Shopping Mall is very modern with famous chain shops and restaurants. Sadly we have no photos of the modern area of Melaka, but here are a couple of photos from other areas of the city!

Find the Taming Sari Tower

Nearby the mall is Melaka’s modern tower standing 80 metres tall in the sky. You may have already seen it as it’s close to Muzium Samudera (the giant ship). Taming Sari Tower was completed in 2008 and created another reason for tourists to visit the city!

There’s a slow-spinning observation desk that takes you to the top of the tower giving the best views of Melaka! Book your tickets in advance here !

Watch Sunset at Melaka Straits Mosque

The last activity on our Melaka 2 day itinerary is a visit to the beautiful Melaka Straits Mosque . It’s a little out of the city centre so it’s best to catch a Grab for around RM10 one way.

Melaka Straits Mosque sits on a platform just above the water which makes it one of the best sunset spots in Melaka. When we saw a photo online, we immediately added it to our list!

If you’re wearing the correct covering, it’s okay to enter the mosque but as it’s a place of prayer, it’s important to be respectful. We stayed on the outside admiring the exterior and the views of the water.

We found a lovely viewing point from the rocks on the other side of the Mosque and watched the sun go down. The mosque lights up at night too!

We use a Joby GorillaPod to take our photos! It’s small and lightweight, so it fits in a day bag without worrying about losing it!

There are still more things to do in Melaka if you have more than 2 days. We didn’t get to visit any museums, but Melaka has so many! There are also more towers, an upside-down house and a water park.

Best Time to Visit Melaka

The best time to visit Melaka is from May to July and December to February  in between the rainy seasons. It’s perfectly fine to visit all year round, some days outside of the dry season won’t even rain!

Melaka has a tropical climate so it’s always hot and humid. We visited in June and experienced a mix of sun and rain! Most of Malaysia had mixed weather for our visit, but we still had a great time!

How to get to Melaka

Flying  – Melaka has a very small airport (Malacca Airport) with limited flights, however, Kuala Lumpur International Airport is a bus journey away with routes all over the world. Book your  KLIA Ekspres Airport Train Tickets  on Klook.

Bus  – The best way to get around Malaysia is by bus, especially to get to Melaka. Check for times and prices on  12Go ,  RedBus  or  EasyBook . It’s a 2-hour bus journey from Kuala Lumpur and a 4-hour bus journey from Singapore. You’ll arrive at Melaka Sentral where you can get a local bus or a Grab to the main city centre of Melaka.

How many days to spend in Melaka

We highly recommend spending at least 2 days in Melaka ! This 2 day Melaka itinerary shows you all the best highlights of the city and although it’s possible to squeeze into one day, we really think the area deserves another day.

With an extra day, you can spend longer browsing Jonker Street and visiting the beautiful mosque on the water!

Things to do in Melaka for One day

Day trips from Kuala Lumpur or Singapore are a popular way to explore Melaka. Using your own car, a rental car or the buses in Malaysia you can explore the highlights of the city in 1 day.

If you only have 1 day in Melaka, try to time it on a weekend so you can visit the Jonker Street Market in the evening! If that’s not possible, a visit to the street in the daytime is also good.

Use this 2 day Melaka itinerary to create a faster-paced version for your day trip . Skip the Melaka Straits Mosque as it’s too far away from the city on a short trip. Focus on the beautiful old town, including Jonker Street and visit the Church of Saint Paul on the hill for some views of the city.

Is Melaka worth visiting?

The world heritage city of Melaka is definitely worth visiting in Malaysia! We’re so glad we visited and even though it’s slightly touristy, it still feels underrated. It’s in the perfect location if you’re travelling from Malaysia to Singapore and it’s so close to the capital city (Kuala Lumpur) .

It’s an easy place to visit to discover the history, street art and Western ruins! If you’re visiting Malaysia it’s definitely worth spending 2 days in Melaka!

My Australia trip was all about ticking off dream destinations from my travel bucket list, and considering my best friend was based in Melbourne for 6-week for an internship, how could we not explore the Great Ocean Road?

We did a weekend road trip on the Great Ocean Road since she then had to be back at work Monday morning, and found it to be the perfect amount of time to see all the main stops on the Great Ocean Road.

Driving on the Great Ocean Road, Australia

Our Great Ocean Road self drive itinerary

Before jumping straight into the explanation of the best places to stop at during this road trip, I wanted to include a map of our Great Ocean Road self-drive itinerary and of the key attractions.

The geographer in me sometimes makes a come back and finds it easier to make sense of a trip or location if I have a map to look at.

The whole length of the Great Ocean Road is 664km, drivable in around 9.5 hours if you were to do it without stops. The itinerary I have outlined will take 2 days and is optimal for weekend trips.

Great Ocean Road road trip – self drive or with a tour?

I know this is a Great Ocean Road self-drive itinerary, but before diving into the meat of the itinerary, I wanted to give you some options for popular tours you can join.

Self-drive road trips aren’t for everyone. Whether you don’t like driving or don’t like having to plan itineraries, guided tours are a very common choice amongst many travellers.

Hence why there are so many Great Ocean Road tours from Melbourne. I have listed below some of the most popular, which I recommend joining if you don’t fancy driving.

From Melbourne: Ultimate 2-Day Great Ocean Road Tour   – This would be my top choice if I was joining a tour. It covers all the main stops in this itinerary, and includes accommodation during the trip.

You don’t have to worry about getting around, booking accommodation or where to eat. Everything is arranged for you, just sit back, relax, and enjoy the beauty of the Great Ocean Road!

From Melbourne: Great Ocean Road Full-Day Trip – Personally, I recommend spending at least one night on the Great Ocean Road, as there are so many cool things to do.

However, if you don’t have long in your Australia itinerary, you can also discover it on a day trip. This is the most popular and highly reviewed one online, so you can trust they know what they’re doing.

Great Ocean Road itinerary – Day 1

Set off from melbourne early.

We woke up bright and early on Saturday morning, as we had to pick up our rental car in Melbourne first and we knew it could take some time.

Once we had all the paperwork sorted we hit the road with our rental car, excited to finally be enroute to the Great Ocean Road.

Stop in Torquay

Torquay is a small seaside town that is also the official start of the Great Ocean Road. We drove through the town and went straight to the esplanade to enjoy the beach vibes.

We were there in April, which is the Aussie autumn so the beaches weren’t too busy, however if you’re visiting in summer be ready to find them packed with surfers and beach goers.

I would have loved to do a surf class somewhere along the Great Ocean Road, but it wasn’t really the right season and we were a bit short on time.

If you’re visiting in summer and want to spend more time by the sea than chasing waterfalls inland, definitely add some surf time to your itinerary.

Epic views along the Great Ocean Road, Australia

Visit Bells Beach

Pretty soon after you set off from Torquay you will come across Bells Beach, a world famous surfing spot.

Bells Beach hosts every year since 1962 the Rip Curl Pro, the world’s longest running surfing competition. It’s a pretty big destinations for surfers basically.

For non surfers you can walk along the edge of the cliffs on the wooden walkways and watch the surfers on the waves far below, or head down the steep steps and walk along the beach.

Even if you don’t surf it’s still a very scenic beach and a lovely spot for a walk.

Because an iconic road trip wouldn’t really be quite as iconic without a big sign to point it out right? 

The Great Ocean Road is often considered one of the most beautiful roads in the world , and it’s easy to see why! After this sign, you officially start your road trip along this iconic road!

There’s a small parking area close to it, I guess they knew people would want photos of it and prepared accordingly!

There’s also a path that will take you to the beach if you want to go for a dip in the sea or just walk on the beach.

Stop in Lorne for lunch

Lorne is a small town along the Great Ocean Road and the perfect spot to stop for lunch after a morning of driving.

Along the Great Ocean Road and seaside you will find a row of cute coffee shops, restaurants and pubs with outdoors seating space.

We parked close to the sea and wandered around for a bit until eventually settling on a classic Aussie burger for lunch.

If you’re not in a rush you can spend some more time wandering around the town and shops before hitting the road again.

Erskine Falls

Wherever I go, if the location allows it, I love to go waterfall chasing. The areas that surround the Great Ocean Road are full of forests, national parks and waterfalls that you can explore.

Since we only had two days we decided to focus on the ones that we thought seemed most spectacular. For our first day on the Great Ocean Road we went to Erskine Falls; a 30-metre waterfall that cascades into a deep gully.

There are two viewing platforms, one at the top of the falls that gives you a view over the falls and river below, and the other at the base.

The walk to the base is pretty steep but not unreasonably long, we found that it wasn’t too challenging physically.

We were there in dry season so unfortunately there wasn’t much water falling, but it was a pretty stunning surrounding nonetheless.

The Twelve Apostles are probably one of the most iconic sights in Australia and on the Great Ocean Road. The Twelve Apostles are huge limestone formations just off the shore of Port Campbell National Park.

Their proximity to each other and the coast is what makes it so particular and attractive to the hundreds of tourists that come every day to visit it. It’s an especially popular sunset spot.

Since we left Erskine Falls quite late and were afraid we would miss the sunset we actually decided to drive inland and not on the Great Ocean Road (not the most coherent decision for a Great Ocean Road trip!) but the road is considerably shorter and saved us loads of time, allowing us to arrive in time for sunset.

There is a parking lot just by the Twelve Apostles from which you can then easily walk to the viewing platforms.

There is a long wooden walkway dotted with viewing decks so that you can enjoy the view from different parts of the coast.

It was extremely busy when we visited so if you want to get a good spot to take photos, make sure to get there well before sunset.

Sleep in Apollo Bay

Once the sun was done we set off and drove back on the Great Ocean Road to Apollo Bay, where we stayed for the night.

Apollo Bay is one of the most popular stops and main towns on the Great Ocean Road so you will find a lot of other backpackers and road trippers like you at the pubs and restaurants.

The town itself isn’t huge, with only one main road of bars and restaurants, which makes it easy to find somewhere to stop for dinner.

There are lots of great AirBnbs on the Great Ocean Road , which are perfect if you’re travelling with friends. We slept at the BIG4 Apollo Bay Pisces Holiday Park .

We had a cute little bungalow with an outdoors patio area. The bungalow was spacious, clean and in a great location to continue our Great Ocean Road adventures. It’s perfect also for families.

Great Ocean Road itinerary – Day 2

Hopetoun falls.

We set off from Apollo Bay early in the morning as we had another packed day ahead of us.

We made it to Hopetoun Falls, the first stop of our day, by 8AM and were pleasantly surprised to find we were the only ones there.

The walk from the parking lot is pretty steep but it’s an easy trail, with wooden steps in the steepest parts.

When you make it to the bottom you will find a viewing platform from which you can look up and admire the three jets that form this waterfall.

Hopetoun Falls is probably one of the most beautiful waterfalls I’ve seen, and the fact we were the only ones there added to the beauty of it.

Triplet Falls

As you may have imagined by now, we kind of had a thing for waterfalls on this trip.

A short 15-minute drive from Hopetoun Falls you will find Triplet Falls. Triplet Falls, as the name suggests, is a group of three waterfalls that you can visit in the Great Otway National Park.

There is a walking trail that starts at the parking lot, takes you to see all the three waterfalls and return via a loop to the parking lot.

The whole walk is very picturesque, even when you’re not approaching the waterfalls but just walking through the woods. The whole walk will probably take you around one hour.

Otway Fly Treetop Adventures

There isn’t too much driving involved this morning, since after visiting these two epic waterfalls you can head straight to Otway Fly Treetop Adventures , a short drive away from Triplet Falls.

This is an area of the Great Otway National Park where you can see up close the treetops of this rainforest, whether it’s with the treetop walk or with a zipline tour.

We settled for the treetop walk as we didn’t have time for the full zip-lining tour (it lasts 2.5 hours).

We did the rainforest and treetop walk which is around 2km and takes around 1 hour to complete. The entry ticket is 25 AUD.

All throughout the walk there are signs with information about the local flora and fauna, while they are geared more towards children they are still interesting to read while doing the walk.

The walkway goes up to 25m getting you up close to the tree tops, if you’re a bit scared of heights you might not want to look down!

There is also a coffee shop where you can have lunch after all the walking around of the morning and before you hit the road again.

Gibson Steps

Gibson Steps is one of those spots where you can get off the cliffs and down to the beach. There are 86 steps that descend the 70m of the cliffside.

The steps are quite steep and narrow but it’s not a particularly challenging walk down (the walk up on the other hand is slightly tougher).

Even if it was too cold to swim in the sea (and with waves that big I would have avoided it regardless) the beach is very pretty and with the towering cliffs behind it makes for a very picturesque location for a walk on the beach.

Loch Ard Gorge

After the Twelve Apostles one of the most famous stops on the Great Ocean Road is Loch Ard Gorge. We drove there straight from Gibson Steps which are a short 5-minute drive away along the sea.

From the parking lot of Loch Ard Gorge there are multiple wooden walkways that take you to different spots along the coast so that you can enjoy the view over the cliffs from different angles.

My personal favourite was the walk down to the beach inside Loch Ard Gorge, since being at the base of these huge cliffs really has a way of making you feel small.

Sunset at Bay of Islands

Since one epic sunset over the sea and staggering cliffs isn’t enough, I figured it was best to add another one in this weekend itinerary.

The Bay of Islands isn’t as famous as the Twelve Apostles however it has nothing to envy to its more popular neighbour.

The Bay of Islands is still a part of the Port Campbell National Park and is a short 30-minute drive away from Loch Ard Gorge along the Great Ocean Road.

From the parking lot it’s a short walk to the viewing platforms, which you’ll find considerably less busy than the Twelve Apostles.

There’s a whole trail set out with wooden boards that you can walk along to enjoy the sunset from different spots along the coast.

Have dinner in Peterborough

The sun has set and it’s time to get ready for heading back home, but not before one last stop on the Great Ocean Road.

We stopped for dinner in Peterborough as it’s very close to the Bay of Islands and has lots of good choices for restaurants and pubs.

The town is also very picturesque with a chilled vibe if you want to walk around and explore after dinner.

Drive back to Melbourne

We chose to drive back to Melbourne via the inland route, as it’s considerably quicker than on the Great Ocean Road along the coast.

We figured since we’d spent the weekend road tripping along the Great Ocean Road and we’d seen all the main highlights, we could avoid the scenic route on the way back.

If you’re trying to get back to Melbourne at a reasonable time on Sunday night so that you can go to work on Monday morning, I would recommend this approach and itinerary.

If you’re not in a rush to get back to Melbourne and want to explore more of Australia, you can easily continue your road trip to South Australia!

Just continue driving on to the Limestone Coast and continue your Aussie adventure!

Exploring the Great Otway National Park, Australia

Some road trip essentials

Before ending this post I thought I’d include some information to help you plan a road trip in Australia and essential items that I like to bring on every road trip with me (or just any trip in general).

Some essentials that never miss from my suitcase include:

Fast drying towel : I like to carry a fast drying towel with me because whether I decide to go for a surf and swim in the sea, or the hostel doesn’t provide one I prefer to have one always on me.

They dry super quick and take up little space so they’re easy to carry around.

Reusable water bottle : There’s a lot of walking around involved in this itinerary, so you want to make sure you stay well hydrated throughout the two days.

Since tap water is drinkable in Australia you’re better off taking a reusable water bottle with you and refilling whenever you have the chance. Bottled water isn’t expensive but when you add them all it can save you a fair bit.

Power bank :   Yes I spend too much time on my phone, there’s no denying that. That’s why I always travel with a power bank.

I like to say it’s my job to be on my phone but really, when a sunset looks as good as the one at the Twelve Apostles did, you can’t help but take all the photos, boomerangs and videos that battery will allow.

2 Days, 1 Night in Yosemite: Quick Overnight Trip Itinerary

Recently, I was lucky to snag a coveted campsite reservation in North Pines Campground, one of the few campgrounds located within Yosemite Valley. Though I could only fit a quick 2 day, 1 night trip to Yosemite into my schedule, it was well worth the drive from San Francisco. With a record snow season this year, the waterfalls were in full force – many of which haven’t been seen for years due to the drought. Read on for tips about choosing a campsite and making the most out of an overnight trip to Yosemite.

7AM: Driving from San Francisco to Yosemite National Park I departed a bit later than planned, due to a *cough* late night *cought* the day before. Since I was driving on a Sunday morning, I ran into very little traffic on the main highway from I-80 East to I-580 East to I-5 South. After leaving my apartment around 7:30 AM, I arrived at the entrance to Yosemite via Highway 120 around noon. The drive was smooth sailing up until that point – when I ran into the dreaded valley traffic. The Pines campgrounds are located at the end of the valley, which means you’ll be sitting in bumper to bumper traffic if you’re visiting on a weekend or anytime during the summer. It took me 45 minutes to drive the 5 miles from the valley entrance to the campgrounds, oof.

1PM: Setting Up Camp Since this was my first time solo camping, I wanted to set up camp as soon as I arrived. One less thing to worry about later in the evening! I had site #515 in North Pines, which has an excellent view of Merced River and plenty of level ground space for at least three 2-person tents. All of the Pines campgrounds have incredible views of North Dome, Royal Arches, and some even of Half Dome. These campsites are located close to Half Dome Village, which has a sizable convenience store and even a pizza grill.

2:30 PM: Leisurely Exploring the Valley on Foot & Taking Photos I originally planned to hike the Mist Trail this first day, but given my late start, I decided to take the day easy and roam around the valley floor for photographs. While the campgrounds are within walking distance of some of the main attractions, there is also a free! electric shuttle bus that you can take as well. Or, if you’re feeling a bit more active, you can rent bicycles from the Half Dome Village Recreation Center and bike around the valley floor.

7 AM: Pack Up & Head to Happy Isles Trailhead After a quick breakfast, I packed up my camp and set out at 8am to the Happy Isles Trailhead for the 7 mile long Mist Trail – John Muir Trail loop. Since this was a Monday morning, there were plenty of parking spaces left. This area is still in bear country, so I stored all my remaining food in the bear lockers at the entrance of the lot.

From there, it was a short walk to the trailhead, where there is a visitor center (open during summer) and restrooms. There’s also a shuttle stop here, for those who park elsewhere and don’t want to move their car (highly recommended).

8:30 AM: Hiking the Mist Trail & John Muir Trail Loop I decided to hike the Mist Trail – John Muir Trail loop, which includes both Vernal and Nevada Falls. End to end, this loop is a little over 6 miles – it took me about 4.5 hours to complete with ample time for photos and a quick lunch break.

This is a quintessential Yosemite hike with stunning views of not only the waterfalls, but other parts of the valley as well. I’ll be writing a more detailed post on hiking the loop!

1:30 PM: Drive Home! Luckily, there was almost no traffic leaving the park since it was a Monday. I’d highly recommend leaving on weekday to avoid the crazy road congestion that’s bound to happen.

Final Notes

Choosing a Campsite in North Pines Because I picked up a campsite that was released at the last minute (it was previously held due to potential flooding), I had fewer choices when booking. However, it worked out well, as it was located right by the river and my immediate neighboring campsite was empty. Normally, the valley campsite can feel quite crowded and you don’t get as much privacy. I’ve accepted that as a trade-off for the benefit of providing more folks with access to the outdoors!

In the North Pines Campground, I would recommend sites 502, 504, 506, 520, 522, 524 and 526. The last site is particularly special, as it’s set pretty high above the river level (for example, 520 still seemed a bit swampy in certain spots), and there’s no adjacent campsite to the side where you pitch your tents. I enjoyed site 515, and 513 and 511 also looked promising. During the summer, it’s better to avoid the sites in the 100s, which can be a bit… fragrant from the horse stables 🙂

Cell Phone Service Some parts of the valley does have cell phone reception – most campground areas do not. I downloaded PDFs of the valley and trails so I could reference them on my phone in airplane mode.

Trail and Road Closures in Winter & Spring I visited in the middle of May – Four Mile Trail was still closed, and Glacier Point had just opened. Tioga Pass was still closed, which meant Tuolumne Meadows was inaccessible. Depending on the winter season, these areas may remain closed well into May, or even into the beginning of June. For example, the opening of Half Dome cables were delayed this year from May to June 2nd. Of course, there is still plenty to see even if certain routes are closed. Just something to keep in mind in case your heart is set on anything specific!

Day 1 : Travel from Kuala Lumpur to Sekinchan

14.00hrs: Pick up from your hotel in Kuala Lumpur. Transfer to Sekinchan . (The journey takes approximately 1.5 hours.)

15.30hrs-18.00hrs: Enjoy the scenery of the fishing village and miles and miles of golden or green rice fields of Sekinchan.

What you will do during the Sekinchan Trip?

• Visit to Paddy Gallery and learn more about rice farming. You may try the local snack food and “Ice Kacang ABC” (local ice cream) on the Redang Beach.
• Make a wish on the Sekinchan Wishing Tree. Next to the beach, there is a Chinese Temple that is known for its giant tree. People come from everywhere to take pictures and make wishes on the Sekinchan Wishing Tree . The entire tree is tangled with hundreds of red ribbons (that represents all the wishes), and is really quite a pretty sight. The Chinese Temple ( Nam Tieng Temple) stands right next to the tree; where you can perform prayers, and also obtain a strand of red ribbon to make your wish. The threads are free; but there’s a donation box right next to it. You can then write your name and wishes on the cloth (a table and marker pens are provided).

18.30hrs: Dinner at local seafood restaurant.

20.00hrs: Check in local homestay/hotel. Tour ends.

Day 2: Sekinchan - Sky Mirror - Kuala Lumpur

Breakfast, Lunch

08.00hrs: Simple breakfast . Then transfer to Sky Mirror Jetty.

08.30hrs: Upon arrival at the jetty, you will be escorted a boat ride heading to Sky Mirror. You can see the sky meet the earth at Sasaran Beach , where low tides result to reflective shallow waters! Take unlimited and creative photos as many as you can. To stand out in your photos, it is recommended that you wear bright coloured clothing or accessories like scarves or hats. You may also witness a multitude of sea creatures such as sea clams, shore crabs, sea snails and pink dolphins! There is a fun activity that you may pick up the clams as many as you can and bring to restaurant for dishes.

12.30hrs: Lunch at local seafood restaurant. After lunch, proceed to local product shop for food snack and souvenir.

For me, Busan feels like a giant metropolis with the heart of a small town, welcoming newcomers with open arms. It’s a place of contrasts, where tradition meets innovation at every turn. From its bustling streets to its serene beaches, there’s something enchanting about this city that captures the imagination.

But what truly sets Busan apart is its embrace of cultural diversity. Whether it’s through world-renowned events like the Busan International Film Festival or its lively Dance and Comedy Festivals, the city thrives on the creativity and complexity of outsiders, greeting them with warmth and hospitality.

2 Days in Busan

Here’s an incredible 2-day itinerary we’ve put together for you. But before we jump into it, let’s chat.

Take a moment to think about how leisurely you want to enjoy each of the sights in the area. And don’t forget to account for travel time between stops.

If you’ve only got 2 days in Busan, we’ve handpicked a few must-see gems that embody the essence of authentic Korea and are conveniently reachable.

In our itinerary below, we’ve tried to provide public transit options for the attractions mentioned so that you have a better idea of distances between stops. In all cases, a taxi or hired car should be quicker, so be sure to factor in your preferred transport mode when planning your movements.

As with any Korean jaunt, you need to allow slightly more time for unexpected traffic, especially during peak times.

Busan can become particularly congested, so don’t quell your excitement with unreasonable expectations on transit times.

Taking public transport is so much more adventurous than jumping into a taxi that probably has some English capabilities.

Getting lost on the bus is always a possibility in a foreign country with squiggly lines for letters, which makes it a riveting experience when you’re game for a full bank of memories.

Where to Go in Busan: Day 1

On day one in Busan, why not hit the more vibrant side of the seaside metropolis?

There are bustling fish markets, resort parks, cultural stops, and amazing architectural feats to enjoy around every corner.

It’s a captivating blend of tradition and technology that’s breathtaking against the backdrop of coastal industry and cosmopolitan throngs.

1. Take the Songdo Cable Car

On a clear day, start your morning with a spectacular perspective of the city by the sea at the Songdo Cable Car in Amnam-dong.

For the more intrepid souls, there are several glass-bottomed cable cars for extra clarity on the scenic round-trip ride. To ride these you have to pay extra for the “crystal cruise”.

Remember to take your camera. The 360-degree views of Busan city are phenomenal.

How to Get There

Take subway line 1 (the orange line) to Jagalchi station and take exit 2.

Walk down Chungmu-daero for about 50 meters until you see a bus stop where you take bus 7, 26, 71 or 96 to Songdo beach.  From here it’s about 15 minutes on foot to the cable car.

2. Wander Around Gamcheon Cultural Village

If you’re tired of blue skies and sparkling oceans (or the burgeoning crowds as the morning draws on), head over to the Gamcheon Cultural Village in Saha-gu for a cultural extravaganza.

It’s a stunning traditional setting that’s full of color, flair, street art, and photo ops.

You’ll need your walking shoes, but it’s difficult to get lost, and the views are truly a delight.

To soak in the most breathtaking panoramic views of this vibrant village, I recommend making your way up towards the library nestled in the historic hot spring building. Trust me, the scenery from up there is absolutely mesmerizing!

If you’re with children (or the young at heart), try the ‘stamp collection’ activity that’s available from the Information Center at the entrance of the village. 

It will help you enjoy the village more as you become aware of the tantalizing secrets that hide in its alleyways.

How to Get From the Songdo Cable Car to Gamcheon Cultural Village

Take subway line 1 (the orange line) to Toseong station. Continue on the local bus to Gamcheon Elementary School Bus (the stop will be announced in English).  You can take bus Saha-1-1, Seogu 2 or Seogu 2-2. 

This will take at least 40 minutes. If you are short on time, taking a taxi will be quicker.

3. Explore Jagalchi Market

Perhaps, the most famous of all Busan attractions is the bustling fish market, called Jagalchi.

It is a massive complex of seafood stores and suppliers with the freshest fish products that you’re going to find in all of South Korea.

Busan is the epicenter of the Korean coastal culture and boasts specialist dishes that are as famous with the locals as it is with international visitors.

The Jagalchi Market is the perfect place to have lunch.

Besides the freshest ‘hwae’ (raw fish, or sashimi) that you’ll find anywhere in the country, Busan also has famous seed pancakes, ‘dwaeji gukbap’ (pork soup), and ‘milmyeon’ (a wheat noodle broth that’s fantastically refreshing in the summer).

Jagalchi Market is also a central stopping point for tours, cooking classes, and curious visitors who can’t wait to try out all the flavors. It’s housed within a complex of grocery stores, specialty shops, stalls, and street restaurants.

Jagalchi Market is also quite central to many of the attractions on Day One of our Busan 2 day Itinerary, so if you need a landmark on squiggly maps, this is it.

  How to get from Gamcheon Cultural Village to the Jagalchi Market

25-30 minutes by bus (numbers 87 or 124) or a quick taxi ride.

4. Discover BIFF Square, Yongdusan Park, and Busan Tower

After a scrumptious lunch at the Jagalchi Market, make your way over to Yongdusan Park just a few minutes walk away.

It’s widely known for shopping, galleries, traditional markets, museums, and the famous Busan Tower (which is almost 120 meters tall) from where you can enjoy beautiful panoramic views during the day and at night.

Here you will find a list of nightlife activities in Busan.

This is also the area where the popular Busan International Film Festival is held (affectionately referred to as BIFF Square ), so it’s jam-packed with places to see and things to do.

If you want a healthy dose of arts and culture, the area has easy walking access to:

• Busan Modern History Museum
• Busan’s Trickeye Museum
• Museum of Musical Instruments of the World
• World Model Ship Exhibit
• Daegaksa Temple.

If it’s food and shopping you’re after, BIFF Square and Yongdusan Park are also within easy walking distance from:

• Gukje Market
• Jagalchi Market
• Bupyeong Market
• Gwangbokro (Culture and Fashion street)
• Gwangbokdong (Food street)
• Bosudong Book Street

Busan Museum of Movies

The Busan Museum of Movies opened in 2017, which makes it one of the new kids on the block as far as the cultural scene is concerned, but it also houses the mind-boggling Trickeye Museum that’s so much fun (with or without children).

The museum is in Yongdusan Park itself, so you can connect with nature and enjoy the views while you’re there.

If you only visit one museum, pick this one.

Most of the exhibits are interactive, and you can try out your movie splicing skills, ride the virtual reality roller coaster, pose with popular characters as you learn more about how movies are made, and so on.

We recommend that you acquire the affordable joint tickets for both the film and trick museums.

Spend a fascinating few hours marveling at the movies and special effects (with amazing photo ops available at the clever Trickeye exhibits along the way).

There is also an app available (Docent), which isn’t too highly rated but can make the experience slightly more meaningful for non-Korean speakers wanting to delve into more detail at each exhibit.

How to Get from the Jagalchi Market to BIFF Square

BIFF Square is only a three-minute walk from Jagalchi Market. Head away from the coast around the corner on Jagalchi Road and cross the main street (Gudeok-ro) to find yourself immersed in BIFF Square and surrounds.

Wander Around Yongdusan Park

The park itself is just as captivating as all the retail, culture, and entertainment options that surround it.

The Busan Tower is housed here, with its 118-meter spire as a clear landmark for orientation and wonder. There are gardens, monuments, pagodas, galleries, and plenty of rest stops and shady trees to take in the views of Busan below you.

Locals often recommend the view from the Busan Tower at night, so if you happen to be there when the lights are twinkling over the city, make your way up to the tower for another perspective.

How to Get from the Jagalchi Market to Yongdusan Park and Busan Tower

Yongdusan Park is a fifteen-minute walk from Jagalchi Market or fifteen minutes by bus (for which you need to walk a short way to the bus stop anyway).

Busan Tower is in Yongdusan Park and accessible by foot. There is an entrance fee to go up to the top of the structure and enjoy the observatory.

5. Visit Taejongdae Resort Park or Oryukdo Skywalk Bridge

At the end of a busy day, you may feel the need to reconnect with nature and take a last breath of fresh air before the evening’s festivities.

There are two options from your location in the BIFF area that are well worth your time: Taejeondae Resort Park or the Oryukdo Skywalk Bridge.

Option 1: Taejongdae Resort Park

If you are up for a long and leisurely stroll in view of the seaside, put on those walking shoes and get the camera ready for the stunning Taejeongdae Resort Park.

It’s advisable to take some water with you if you’re there during the summertime, as it’s a larger area than you might imagine. We wouldn’t want you to rush through it because you’ve misjudged your hydration levels.

If time is on your side, see if you can find the temples nestled on the grounds, otherwise head directly to the observatory for the best views of the coastline and a quicker round trip.

The Yeongdo Lighthouse is right on the edge of the cliffs and gives stunning views of the sparkling blue expanse far below.

How to Get from Yongdusan Park to Taejongdae Resort Park

Bus lines 8, 30, 66, 88, 88-A, and 101 all head to Taejongdae. Take a bus if you have at least an hour to spare, otherwise, hop into a taxi.

Option 2: Oryukdo Skywalk Bridge

As the afternoon draws to a close, you might prefer to skip the walking and make your way over to the Oryukdo Skywalk Bridge in Nam-gu instead.

It’s a stunning natural peninsula where you can reconnect with the natural wonder of this fascinating country.

If the bridge itself is closed (due to strong winds or adverse weather), you can still enjoy the view through the massive glass windows of the restaurant on-site. It’s even better with a drink in hand and some Korean cuisine.

How to Get From Yongdusan Park to Oryukdo Skywalk Bridge

Take the metro to Busan Station (line 1/orange), exit 10.  From Busan station, you continue your journey on bus 27 for about 30-40 minutes.  The bus stop is called Oryukdo SK back gate. It takes some time to reach Haedong Yonggungsa and Oryukdo Skywalk by public transport.  

A bus will take at least an hour, so consider a taxi if you need to arrive at the bridge before closing time.

6.Walk Along Seomyeon shopping street

Many visitors are glad they’ve booked their accommodation in Busan near Seomyeon Shopping Street (where the Seomyeon subway stop is located).

It’s only six subway stops from Busan Station, and it’s bustling with restaurants, shops, and entertainment to cater to tourists and locals alike. If you’re passing through during the day or night, it’s well worth taking a leisurely look around.

If you’re hoping to mingle with the young and famous in Busan, this is where it is all happening, around the clock.

Some say this upmarket shopping scene is reminiscent of Gangnam (in Seoul) in many ways, but it definitely is not as crowded.

You’ll find whatever you need here after a long day on the go, and it’s conveniently accessible for whatever direction you happen to be traveling.

How to Get to Seomyeon Shopping Street:

The street is easily found if you head to the Seomyeon Subway Stop. From Jagalchi Market, it’s a fifteen-minute walk to Busan station (the subway stop) and then only six stops to Seomyeon.

Follow the signs at Seomyeon to orientate yourself on the street. Exit 1 or 2 will take you to the main shopping area, Exit 12 or 15 to the underground section, and Exit 7 to the Lotte Department Store. If you’re heading to Haeundae area the following day, jump on the subway for the simplest transit (It will take about forty minutes)

Busan 2-day itinerary: Day 2

After such a busy first day in Busan, you’re going to need to put your feet up for a while and unwind.

For a final day of leisure before you hit the road, why not enjoy some of the most beautiful vistas in Busan and a relaxing few hours at the beaches and spas?

1. Vist the Haedong Yonggungsa Temple

We recommend starting with the Haedong Yonggungsa Temple for quiet meditation and a heap of pious traditions. This is one of the most beautiful places in Korea. 

Stairs and statues complement the spectacular ocean views below, setting the scene wonderfully for a morning of reflection and gratitude.

It’s the perfect way to start your final day in Busan.

The beautiful temple is a favorite with a great many onlookers, and it’s the kind of attraction that’s enjoyable in any season.

Snowy temple vistas by the seaside are just as breathtaking as the spring cherry blossoms or the vibrant fall tones.

It can get really busy during the weekends so we recommend visiting the temple on a weekday if you can.

How to Get from Haeundae Station to Haedong Yonggungsa Temple

Take the subway to Haeundae Station (Metro Line 2).  Make your way to exit 7, right in front of exit 7 is a bus stop.  Wait at this bus stop for bus 181. The bus trip should take approximately 45 minutes to an hour. You leave the bus at the Yonggungsa Temple (용궁사) stop. Signage will lead you from the bus stop to the entrance of the temple.

2. Enjoy Haeundae Beach and Sea Life Busan Aquarium

When your head is clear, and your camera lens is satisfied, head back to Haeundae Beach for the rest of the morning.

If you’re in Busan with the family, stop in at the Sea Life Busan Aquarium on Haeundae Beach after a fun morning in the sun.

There are 250 species of fish to admire and a fascinating eighty-meter ‘underground’ tunnel that makes you feel like you’re walking the ocean floor.

Haeundae Beach is a favorite among tourists and locals alike, and it’s the kind of place where you can kick back and unwind until you’re ready to move into a leisurely lunch at the myriad of beachside restaurants.

Then, prepare for an afternoon of retail therapy and more relaxation at the impressive Lotte Department Store in Centum City.

How to Get from Haedong Yonggungsa Temple to Haeundae Beach

Head back to Haeundae Station the same way you came. For orientation, the Haeundae Subway Stop is a five-minute walk from the main beach.

3. Busan Museum of Art

When you’ve had enough of the gentle surf and soft white sand, take a stroll over to the Centum City region for shopping, culture, and relaxation.

If you feel like you need a dose of culture before a serious stint as a shopaholic in Centum City, pop across the road to The Busan Museum of Art for a more contemplative experience.

It’s a small but radical collection of pieces from all over the world, and contemporary art lovers rave about the exhibition.

The Busan Museum of Art is only a few minutes away from Centum City, too, and it closes at 6 p.m.

How to Get from Haeundae Beach to the Busan Museum of Art

Walk five minutes to Haeundae subway station for three stops to Busan Museum Art, or four stops to Centum City. Or, take Bus 1001 for three stops until Centum City BEXCO (a three-minute walk from Lotte Department Store).

4. Go Shopping in the Lotte Department Store, Centum City

The grand Lotte Department Store at Centum City is a sight to behold, indeed.

The impressive complex provides an enlightening view of all that Korea has to offer in the way of technology, retail, and top-notch brands for the high-end market.

If glamor is what you seek, this is where you’ll find it, and the tenth-floor viewing garden is quite spectacular, too.

How to Get from the Busan Museum of Art to Lotte Department Store, Centum City

5.Relax in Spa Land or at Gwangalli Beach

Our final two recommendations for day two of your Busan itinerary go hand-in-hand with a day of nature and relaxation: Spa Land and Gwangalli Beach.

We’ll leave it to you to decide on the order that suits you best as we are torn between the most luxurious way to end two memorable days in Busan.

Option 1 is a glorious soak and pamper in Spa Land (Centum City) after a long afternoon of shopping. The spa will be followed by a quick taxi to take you to dinner and nightlife at Gwangalli Beach. You’ll eat and marvel under the lights of the beautiful bridge that sparkles in the bay.

Option 2 is a leisurely early supper at one of the beachside restaurants in Gwangalli for a beautiful sunset that turns into a twinkling bridge scene. Excellent Korean cuisine will be followed by a nightcap at one of the quirky pubs that line the road and a quick return to the comforts of Spa Land, Centum City. The rest of the evening will be a blur of hot tubs, massages, saunas, and bliss until you retire to your hotel, utterly relaxed.

How to Get There:

Spa Land is located on the first floor of the Shinsegae Centrum City shopping center which is directly connected to Centum City Station on Subway Line 2 (green line).

Either way, we worry that you will not be in the least bit ready to leave your newfound love in the morning – Busan quickly turns into everyone’s favorite city in South Korea.

Spas in Korea are unlike most in the Western world, but telling you every detail would ruin the surprise. So, be prepared to do things ‘the Korean way.’ If you’re not sure about the protocol, ask for directions, and the friendly staff at Spa Land will be happy to oblige.

How to Get from Busan to Seoul

Busan is South Korea’s second-largest city and it is well connected to the rest of Korea by both train and bus. 

The city also has an airport and several daily flights link the city to the capital.

Busan International Airport is called ‘Gimhae’.  The airport offers multiple daily flights to Seoul (both Incheon and Gimpo airport) and Jeju.

There are several flights per hour between Seoul and Busan. Flights are offered by Korean Air,   Air Busan, and Jeju Air.   The flight time is approximately 1 hour.

Because of the many daily flights, it will sometimes be cheaper to fly than to travel by KTX.

If you want to score cheap flights to Busan we advise you to have a look at Momondo , Kayak,  and  Skyscanner. 

There is a direct KTX service between Busan, Seoul, and Gyeongju.  KTX is the high-speed rail service from Korail, the national rail operator.

The KTX train is the fastest option, it requires 2 hours to reach Gyeongju (Singyeongju station) from Seoul, and getting to Busan requires about 2 hours and 45 minutes.  

The KTX train leaves Seoul from KTX Seoul Station or KTX Yongsan Station. 

Korail also operates slower and cheaper trains in between Seoul and Busan.  These are the ITX express trains and the Mugunghwa intercity trains.   Express trains reach Busan in 4 hours and 30 minutes, the intercity runs one hour longer.

Korail offers various train passes to foreign visitors.

You can choose passes for 2, 3,4, or 5 consecutive days or you can opt for the flexible select passes.

With the select passes, you can select either 2 or 4 days within a 10-window period. 

The passes offer unlimited train travel on all trains operated by Korail, including the high-speed KTX trains.

The passes are not always a good deal so make sure to compare the prices of the individual segments with the price of the pass before you buy a pass.

A return ticket for the KTX between Seoul and Busan is cheaper than the cheapest Korail pass.

Supreme Railways is a private high-speed operator. It offers train services between Seoul and Busan. Tickets tend to be slightly cheaper than those for the KTX and the journey takes 2,5 hours which is almost just as long as with the KTX. 

The trains depart from Suseo station in the Gangnam district of Seoul.

Various bus operators run express buses throughout South Korea. It shouldn’t be hard to find a bus from Seoul to Busan or vice versa. 

On average there are 3 buses each hour between the two cities. 

The buses leave from Dong Seoul and Seoul Gyeongbu.

The most convenient way to check the bus schedules is the website of Kobus .  The website shows the departure time and comfort level of each bus.  You can also directly reserve your tickets and seats on the bus.

Korea can be discovered very easily with a self-drive. Koreans tend to ignore the speed limits but beyond that, they drive very courteously. 

All road signs are bilingual and with the help of a navigation system such as Naver maps (Waze, Google Maps and other foreign systems don’t work properly in South Korea) it’s easy to find your way around. 

Don’t be fooled by the website of Naver which is only in Korean, the Naver maps app is perfectly bilingual.

It should take approximately 4,5 hours to get from Seoul to Busan by car.

Where to Stay in Busan

Busan sprawls out across its landscape, so if it’s your first time visiting, I’d recommend opting for a centrally located spot like Seomyeon or Nampo-dong. These areas are fantastic choices, bustling with restaurants and conveniently situated near Busan’s subway system, albeit it’s somewhat limited.

Staying in Seomyeon places you within easy reach of subway lines 1 and 2, whisking you directly to popular hotspots like Haeundae and Gwangalli Beaches, the tranquil Beomeosa Temple, and the bustling Jagalchi Market.

On the other hand, if you’re all about shopping and sightseeing, Nampo-dong is the perfect base for your adventures in Busan.

Nagano Private Two Day Tour

Enjoy a 2-day, 1 night trip in Nagano city (in Nagano Prefecture) where you will spend one full day with an English-speaking guide taking you around the city—enjoying attractions such as snow monkeys, the famous Zenkoji Temple and later relaxing at a traditional onsen (hot springs) and enjoying a traditional Japanese multi-course (kaiseki) dinner at a traditional Japanese ryokan (hotel). • Snow Monkeys in warmer seasons: The snow starts to melt in March, and the Snow Monkeys Park may not bathe as often as they did in the winter to keep warm. Guests may see the snow monkeys taking a swim as the park staff gives them lunch, but unlike winter months, there are definitely days when the monkeys just do not feel like entering the bath. When it is warm and the sun is out, the monkeys tend to be more active and move around the area. The monkeys are more likely to be grooming in the warmer seasons. While Winter is not the only time to see snow monkeys, please note that they are wild animals and it is difficult to predict their behavior. You can still visit the Snow Monkey Park, but seeing the snow monkeys and watching them bathe is not always guaranteed.
• Guests must provide information (name, age) of each guest for us to arrange accomodation. A current valid passport is required on the day of travel.
• Age Requirement: Guests of all ages can attend this tour, but a booking must be made for each person. Adult pricing applies to guests age 12 to 99. Child pricing applies to guests age 6 – 11. Young child pricing applies to guests age 1 – 5. In this private group tour, there must be at least one person that is 18 years or older.

Additional Information

In winter the walking trail to Snow Monkey Park may get slippery, so please wear winter shoes. The temperatures in Nagano are much colder than Tokyo, so prepare warm clothes.

A moderate amount of walking is involved. Operates in all weather conditions, please dress appropriately.

Non-smoking: All the rooms are non-smoking in ryokan (otherwise requested), there are designated areas outside for those who would like to smoke.
