Recreation and Travel Benefits for Disabled Veterans: Find Out What You Can Use!

The giant pool surrounded by tropical greenery at the Hale Koa Hotel, an Armed Forces Recreation Center

If you’re a veteran with a service-connected disability, you’re eligible to use fantastic DoD benefits that make travel more convenient and affordable. You also have access to incredible military lodging and recreation facilities that aren’t available to civilians.

In the past, these benefits and privileges were limited to veterans who retired from the military. Thanks to legislation passed in recent years, access to DoD travel-related benefits has increased significantly for disabled veterans who are not also military retirees.

Here’s what you’re eligible to use based on your disability rating.

Veterans with Any Service-Connected Disability Rating (0% or more)

On 1 January 2020, the Purple Heart and Disabled Veterans Equal Access Act of 2018 went into effect. The Act gave all service-disabled veterans,* Purple Heart recipients, former prisoners of war (POWs), and registered caregivers access to commissary/exchange stores and certain MWR facilities “on the same basis as a member of the armed forces entitled to retired or retainer pay.”

This fact sheet has detailed FAQs on the legislation and its implementation.

In this section, we focus on what travel and recreation-related benefits veterans with a service-connected disability rating below 100% can use.

*Veterans with a 100% service disability rating already had access .

As a veteran in this group, you have access to all U.S. military recreational facilities, including resorts, cottages, and campgrounds.

You also have Morale, Welfare, & Recreation (MWR) privileges and can use facilities such as the golf courses, marinas, and outdoor equipment rental on bases in the United States and U.S. territories.

Finally, disabled veterans can stay in base lodging (on a space-available basis) on U.S. military installations.

Access to facilities and services on installations in foreign countries is subject to the limitations of host nation and international laws and agreements. So far, Germany has expanded access for U.S. veterans, but it remains to be seen whether other countries will follow suit.

Here is more information about the incredible facilities available to you!

Armed Forces Recreation Centers in the U.S.

Armed Forces Recreation Centers (AFRCs) are full-scale resorts. They offer local tours and recreation opportunities, along with multiple restaurants, pools, and all of the other amenities you would expect to find at a civilian resort, but at a fraction of the price.

There are four AFRCs around the world, and two are in the United States: the Hale Koa in Hawaii and Shades of Green in Orlando, Florida.

The Hale Koa is located on famous Waikiki Beach in Honolulu, Hawaii. This military resort easily rivals any other hotel in the area. It offers newly-renovated rooms, eight dining options, two pools, a fitness center and spa, plus a full selection of rental equipment to help you enjoy the Hale Koa’s prime location on the beach.

Shades of Green is the ultimate getaway for military families. Located on the Walt Disney World property, you have easy access to all of the Disney theme parks and two PGA golf courses.

This full-scale resort has two pools, one of which includes a three-level water slide, and a spa that offers princess and pirate makeovers for the kiddos (in addition to regular spa services). You can also buy all of your discounted tickets to Disney and other local attractions right on site!

Other Military Resorts and Recreational Lodging

Department of Defense runs dozens of other resort-style facilities around the country, ranging from mountain lodges to beachfront cabins and RV campgrounds .

Base MWR Facilities

If you live near a military base, you don’t need to travel to find the experiences you would seek while on vacation.

Play a round at one of the military’s many world-class golf courses. Rent kayaks and paddle the local waterways. Take out a pontoon boat and spend the day fishing. Book a SCUBA diving tour and explore the world under the sea. Or simply relax on a military-only beach !

Disabled veterans have these MWR privileges, including equipment rentals, outdoor recreation trips and more, all at military pricing!

Base Lodging

Disabled veterans can stay in military lodging on U.S. installations on a space-available (Space-A) basis. Some of the benefits of staying on base include clean, safe lodging, often for a better value than local hotels. Also, base lodging is the most convenient place to stay when you plan to use the base MWR facilities mentioned above.

Click here to read more about Space-A lodging.

ID Requirements for Veterans With a Service Connected Disability Less Than 100%

To gain access to the above facilities and services, you must present a Veteran Health Identification Card (VHIC) indicating eligibility (Purple Heart, Former POW, or Service-Connected).

You can also present VA Health Eligibility form H623A indicating placement in VA health care priority group 8E along with valid identification, such as a REAL ID-compliant state driver’s license or a U.S. passport.

Please see the “Gaining Access” section of the FAQs in this Department of Defense factsheet for more details about how to access military installations. As stated in the FAQs, when visiting a military installation for the first time, stop at the visitor control center. In some locations, you may need to pre-register or undergo a background check before accessing the facilities. Contact the facility or base visitor center prior to your arrival to confirm the process.

Note: VHICs are issued to veterans enrolled in VA health care. Visit the VA website for more information about how to obtain a VHIC.

100% Disabled Veteran Benefits

Veterans in this group can use all of the above in addition to the following:

Armed Forces Recreation Centers Overseas

Veterans with a service-connected disability of 100% (100% DAV) can use the two AFRCs located outside of the United States: Dragon Hill Lodge in Korea and Edelweiss Lodge in Germany.

Dragon Hill Lodge is a resort-style hotel in a prime area of Seoul, Korea. The hotel is located on property that was formerly U.S. Army Garrison Yongsan-Casey. While most of that Army installation’s Seoul facilities have closed, Dragon Hill Lodge remains open and is an incredible treat for eligible guests who want to experience the vibrant city of Seoul. The hotel has luxurious guest rooms, a fantastic fitness facility and pool, numerous restaurants, and a concierge desk that can schedule any tour or trip in town.

Edelweiss Lodge and Resort is located in Garmisch, Germany, a picturesque town in the mountains of Bavaria. Edelweiss is a year-round destination, with fantastic skiing and other snow sports in the winter and incredible hiking in the warmer months. It’s also in the perfect location for day trips to places like Neuschwanstein (aka King Ludwig’s Castle), Innsbruck, Austria, and various other castles, monasteries and breweries.

Military Space-A Flights for 100% DAV

As part of the John S. McCain National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2019 , veterans with a permanent service-connected disability rated as total became eligible to fly Space-A. Department of Defense Instruction 4515.13 was updated with this change .

As a result of the legislation, 100% DAV and their accompanying dependent(s) can fly Space-A as Category 6 , which is the same category as retirees. You can fly to and from any destination in the United States or U.S. territories. However, you are not eligible to fly Space-A to/from foreign countries.

( Click here to learn more about Space-A flights .)

The Air Mobility Command has a brochure outlining the boarding requirements for certain military aircraft. You should review the brochure before traveling to ensure you are physically able to meet the requirements.

ID Requirements for 100% DAV

You must present a valid DD Form 1173, DD Form 2765 or Next Generation Uniformed Services ID Card to use the facilities and privileges above. Please visit the DoD Common Access Card website for more information.

Military Retirees

If you are retired from the military, you have access to all of the travel-related benefits above and more without restriction. It does not matter whether you have a VA disability rating, because it has no bearing on your eligibility for these benefits.

As always a another good read ! Maybe you can do an article on allied MWR that can be used in UK and Canada ? Thanks Franchot

Thank you! I’ll add that to my list of ideas!

Mrs. Stephanie,

Is there benefits for Retired Reservist to travel?

Yes, your benefits are similar to a full retiree except that until you reach 60 years old, you cannot fly Space-A to foreign countries.

Yes, Retired Reservists have basically the same benefits as active duty retirees . The main difference is that until you turn 60, you cannot fly Space-A to foreign countries.

So 100% disabled vets can’t fly out of country any idea if there is any legislation to change this

That’s correct. I am not aware of any proposed legislation to change the restriction, but I will update readers accordingly if anything is passed.

I read the actual law and did not see the restrictions for foreign travel. I thought it said 2100% VA “ we’re given the same treatment as retired (class6) for domestic AND foreign travel. Maybe I missed it.

Please see the link in the article to the updates to Department of Defense Instruction 4515.13.

Can I fly from Hawaii or Alaska to Europe

Hi Ernest – Only veterans who retired from the military can fly Space-A to foreign countries. If you are 100% disabled but not retired, you can fly between the continental US and Hawaii/Alaska, but not to Europe.

Can I take my family ie son and family to a resort like Shade of Green in Orlando. Thanks Tom

Hi Tom – Yes, if you are eligible to use a military resort, you can bring family members/guests.

What Do Travel Percentages Mean in a Job Description?

Written by Nathan Brunner .

Last updated on December 12, 2023.

“Travel percentages” refer to the amount of time that an employee is required to travel as part of their job responsibilities. Travel percentages include traveling to other cities, states, or countries to meet with clients and attend conferences.

For example, if a job description requires “50% travel,” the employee will be required spend roughly half of their time traveling and the other half working from their home office or the company’s headquarters.

Some jobs may require no travel at all, while others may involve extensive travel on a regular basis. Before accepting a job that involves travel, it’s important to carefully consider whether you’re willing and able to meet the job’s travel requirements.

Tip : Find Jobs on Salarship .

The Implications of Travel Percentages on Work-Life Balance

Different travel percentages can have significant implications for work-life balance.

For instance, if a job requires very little or no travel, an employee may be able to maintain a more consistent schedule and have more time for personal activities or family commitments.

On the other hand, frequent or extended travel can lead to fatigue, stress, and a lack of personal time, which can negatively affect an employee’s mental health and well-being .

Here is a quick table to help you understand how the different travel percentages will impact your life once you start your job:

  • 10% travel — It means one or two months’ worth of business trips each year. In my experience, it is relatively easy to endure as it means a few travel days (or sometimes weeks) here and there.
  • 25% travel — You will spend at least a quarter of your working hours away from your usual place of work. It amounts to 3 months per year, one week per month, or two days per week.
  • 50% travel — It means constant overnight or international business trips for at least two weeks per month or six months a year. 50% of travel is usually mentioned in international business job descriptions.
  • 75% travel — You will essentially live out of your suitcase and move from hotel to hotel for nine months per year, or three weeks each month. Most jobs that require you to travel three-fourths of the time are pretty stressful (e.g., high-paying jobs or jobs in the transportation industry ). You may rake in a hefty salary, but the tradeoff is little time for yourself, your family, and your non-work-related hobbies and goals.

On the bright side, companies usually shoulder most (if not all) of your travel expenses, including food expenses, hotel expenses, and transportation expenses.

How To Get a Job That Requires You To Travel

If you’re deadset on getting a job that includes a travel percentage in the description, here are a few tips to keep in mind — whether you’re writing your cover letter or answering an interview question on whether you’re willing to travel or not.

  • Highlight any previous travel experience you have. You want to reassure your potential employer that you’re not likely to, say, suffer from jet lag, or commit novice mistakes like forgetting to apply for a visa in countries that require them.
  • Be honest about the amount of time you’re willing to spend traveling. The more honest you are about what you want at the job application or interview stage, the more likely you’ll end up with a job that’s a good fit for you.

Tip : 1,104,752 Jobs Are Available on Salarship .

Final Thoughts

Evaluating the time you’ll be traveling in a job description can help you decide whether a position is right for you.

On the one hand, traveling often translates to more opportunities for promotion and career growth. On the other hand, traveling can be stressful and take a toll on your physical, mental, and psychological health.

Ultimately, it all boils down to your personal priorities and values.

Discount Air Travel

Space-a travel, discounts on lodging and resorts, hotel discounts, base lodging, military resorts, military vacation clubs, other military travel discounts, rental cars, savings through travel websites, credit cards and rewards programs, finding the best military travel discounts takes time.

Several companies offer military discounts on air travel, lodging, resorts and more.

Even if you can’t score a military discount , you can still save money with travel promotions, credit card travel rewards , and more. Here’s what you need to know about military travel discounts.

Many U.S. airlines offer a military discount or incentive, such as checked bag fee waivers or seat upgrades.

However, these offers are not listed on travel websites. You must visit the airline’s website or call its customer service department to get a discount. Remember, airline discounts may only apply to active-duty, National Guard, or reserve service members and may only apply when traveling on orders.

Active duty military, veterans, and their families can also save on airline tickets through a partnership with WeSalute (founded as Veterans Advantage). Learn more about these programs below:

American Airlines offers military discounts of up to 10% for domestic and international airline tickets.

100 percent travel

Southwest Airlines offers everyday low fares for military servicemembers and veterans.

Space-available travel is excellent when it works: it’s a free seat on a military aircraft that’s headed to the same place you’re going (or close to it). However, Space-A seats are increasingly hard to come by.

You may have to wait a few days for a seat – if you get one at all. You should only travel Space-A if you’ve got a flexible schedule and a backup plan (which may include purchasing a last-minute airline ticket).

Veterans with a 100% service-connected disability rating, active-duty service members, National Guardsmen, reservists, retirees and dependents of these groups are eligible to travel Space-A.

Visit the AMC Travel Site or contact the nearest military passenger terminal to learn more about Space-A opportunities near you.

AMC’s Space-A Travel Handbook

Most hotel chains will offer military discounts , provided there isn’t a significant event on the calendar. For example, you may be hard-pressed to get a military discount at a hotel in New York City on New Year’s Eve.

Many hotel chains are also willing to cap their rates at the local per diem rate, which can amount to substantial savings, depending on the hotel chain and location. Rates capped at the per diem rate may require official orders, and almost always require active-duty, reserve or National Guard identification.

Base lodging rates may be significantly cheaper than local hotel rates. You can find base lodging at large military bases. Military hotel chains like the Navy Gateway Inn and Suites may own some of these. DOD contracts civilian hotel chains for some others, including IHG Army Hotels .

You can use discount travel service websites to compare airline, hotel and rental car prices. Some helpful websites include:

  • Travelocity

You can simplify your travel by booking your airline ticket, hotel room and rental car at the same time. However, bundling isn’t always the least expensive option. Compare prices across a few services if you have time.

Some of these companies offer discount plans or rewards for frequent customers. For example, Hotels.com offers a free one-night hotel stay for every 10 nights you reserve through them.

Using a travel rewards program can help you earn points and benefits like free checked bags, priority boarding, free flights, free hotel stays and other perks. You can earn even more points with a credit card rewards program.

Some of the more popular travel credit cards are a joint offering between a credit card company and a specific airline or hotel chain. These reward cards may come with a sign-up bonus equal to a free flight or several nights at a hotel. Other perks may include free checked bags for you and your party, priority boarding, flight discounts, merchandise and other benefits.

With any credit card, read the fine print before you sign up for any deals, and pay your card in full each month to avoid any fees or interest.

The Platinum Card® from American Express

100 percent travel

American Express offers one of the best money-saving perks to military servicemembers – it waives the annual fees for its credit cards , including on The Platinum Card® and the American Express® Gold Card.

With an annual fee of $695 and $250 respectively, it’s easy to see how this under-the-radar perk can be a huge money saver for American Express cardholders, especially if you’re a service member who wants to enjoy the lucrative luxury perks that accompany The Platinum Card® from American Express , or the everyday practicality of the American Express® Gold Card .

Now that you know you can get your American Express annual fee waived as an active service member or spouse of a service member, what are some American Express cards to check out?

Learn more about our favorite below:

In my experience, booking the best travel deals requires a little legwork and a lot of patience. Always check with your unit before booking travel if you are traveling on military orders. They may have access to special offers or other requirements.

If you are traveling alone, start by determining if your itinerary allows for some military-specific travel options, such as Space-A, Armed Forces Recreation Centers or base lodging. If you cannot work one or more of those into your itinerary, you can still save money with some of the deals and services listed above.

Safe travels!

Interview Questions

Comprehensive Interview Guide: 60+ Professions Explored in Detail

How to Answer “Are You Willing to Travel?” (Interview Question)

By Biron Clark

Published: December 5, 2023

If a job involves any travel, you’re likely to hear interview questions like, “Are you willing to travel?” “How much are you willing to travel?” etc.

So in this article, I’m going to walk you through how to answer all of these interview questions. And we’ll look at how to understand the meaning of “travel percentage,” so you’ll know what the job is really going to require before you say “yes” or “no.”

And finally, I’m going to share multiple word-for-word example answers to help you get confident and comfortable with this type of question.  So make sure you read until the end.

Let’s get started…

Answers to “How Much Are You Willing to Travel?”

If they ask an open-ended interview question like this about your willingness to travel, you should state your answer as a percentage.

For example, you could say:

“I’m willing to travel up to 30% of the time. That’s what I did in my last job, and I know I’m comfortable with that amount.”

They may ask you directly for a percentage, with a question like, “what percentage are you willing to travel?” and you’d answer that in the same way. What does travel percentage mean, though? If you’re not sure, it’s essential to understand. So let’s discuss the meaning of “travel percentage.”

Travel percentage meaning: What is travel percentage?

So what does 70 percent travel mean? It means that the employer expects you to be traveling or in cities other than your home city for 70 percent of your working days. So you would expect to spend seven days traveling or away from home for every three days in your home town/office.

This is a very high amount of travel. In my experience working as a recruiter , most travel jobs are 50% or below, because this is less stressful and more sustainable for the worker. So, this is something to keep in mind when deciding how much you’re willing to travel, and whether you’ll take or decline the job offer .

How to Answer, “Are You Willing to Travel X Amount?” – Examples

The hiring manager may also come out and tell you how much travel is involved, and then ask an interview question to determine if this is an acceptable travel amount. In this case, if it’s acceptable to you, then you can indicate that you are on-board with what they’re proposing. For example, you could say:

“That amount of travel will work for me. In my last company, I traveled that same amount, and it worked out fine.”

(It’s always good to show you’ve done something successfully in the past. This is the best way to improve to a new employer that you’ll be successful with them, too!)

No worries if you haven’t traveled for a job before, though…

Here’s an example of how you could still answer this question:

“That amount of travel sounds acceptable to me. I have no problem doing that for this role.”

Here’s another example:

“That sounds acceptable to me. I’d love to hear more about the role, and if it’s a good fit, then I am able to travel.”

Make Sure You Know What You’re Agreeing To

Another thing to keep in mind is the actual travel schedule. Two jobs could both have the same travel percentage – let’s say 50%. But one could have you spending two weeks away and then two weeks at home, while the other could have you traveling for 2-3 days at a time, returning, and doing it all again a few days later.

Depending on your family, children, etc., you may be able to handle one of these travel requirements but not the other. So the travel duration and schedule are two factors you should clarify before answering. You can say, “I would like to understand the company travel schedule a bit better. Can you give me an example of how long each trip would be, or what a typical month looks like?” This will help you get a clear picture of what your work schedule would look like before you answer the interview question. So don’t be afraid to ask questions of your own. You can’t answer interview questions like, “Are you willing to travel for this job?” without knowing what the company expects! For example, if they ask, “Can you travel if the job requires it?” you’d want to respond by saying, “How much travel is expected in the role?” You can’t give a good answer without knowing what they’re proposing or asking, so clarify that first. Once you know what the company expects, then it’s time to directly answer their question and indicate whether you can travel the amount they require.

You Can Also Try to Negotiate Your Travel Percentage/Willingness to Travel

If you’re interested in the job but can’t travel quite as much as they’re proposing, you can say:

“I don’t think I can travel quite that amount. The job and work sound interesting, and I’d love to consider the position if the travel requirements can be reduced to 30%”.

This may work, or it may not (depending on the role and company’s flexibility), but it’s worth asking! This way, you’ll find out the best they can do! You never know if they’re asking, “How much are you willing to travel?” because it’s a hard requirement, or if they’re just wondering how much you’re willing to do So give an honest answer and don’t be afraid to make a counter-proposal.

A lot of job seekers are afraid to set limits or “push back” in a job interview, but this can actually make you more attractive to the company. It shows confidence! However, you also don’t want to rule yourself out in an interview. So if you’re not quite sure, but think it’s possible to travel the amount that the company would like, just say “yes” for now. You’re not accepting the job or signing a contract. You’re just indicating whether this might be possible for you. And your goal in any interview is to get invited to the next step in the process… or get a job offer. So if you think it’s even remotely possible to travel the amount they want, then yes “Yes” and keep interviewing!

You can always go home and talk to friends and family and make a better decision about whether this is right for you! You do NOT need to decide this in the interview!

How to Answer, “Are You Willing to Travel or Relocate?” – Examples

This is a slightly different question. But just like with the questions and sample answers above, you should give an honest, upfront answer. There’s no sense in wasting their time if you absolutely cannot relocate. But if it’s even slightly possible, say “Yes” when an employer asks if you’re willing to relocate. Don’t rule yourself out.

Remember: Your goal in the interview is to impress them and get invited back to the next round – so keep going with the job interview, and ask questions to learn more as you go! You’re NOT wasting the recruiter’s or hiring manager’s time by exploring the opportunity, as long as there’s a tiny chance you’d be willing to travel or relocate for the job. They want the opportunity to sell you on their position! I can’t stress this enough: You’re not wasting their time. I hear a lot of job seekers bring up concerns about this, so I just wanted to set the record straight!

You should now know what travel percentage is, and how to answer any time an employer asks about what percentage you’re willing to travel.

Remember – you’re not signing a contract or agreeing to anything in writing; you’re merely indicating whether this could potentially work (for the right opportunity). So stay calm, use the sample answers above, and be direct/concise when responding in a job interview.

This isn’t one of those interview questions where the hiring manager needs to hear a long-winded answer. So once you’ve answered the question, stop and let the interviewer move on!

Answering “What Percentage Are You Willing To Travel?”

September 14, 2023 by Hannah Morgan

Talking about what percentage of time you’re willing to travel for work is something that trips up a lot of applicants. They often say what they think an interviewer wants to hear instead of an honest and well-prepared answer.

What percentage are you willing to travel

This guide will help you understand what interviewers are looking for when they ask this question, and how you can develop a response that works for everyone.

Table of contents

What does travel percentage mean, how to answer “are you willing to travel”, example answers.

  • placeholder

When a position requires travel, employers typically discuss how much time you’d have to spend in cities other than your own in terms of percentages. For example, a company may advertise a position as requiring “50 percent travel.”

In that case, it means that the employer wants the person hired for that position to spend half of their working days traveling. For every ten days of work, you’d spend five traveling between cities or working in an area outside your home city.

Most travel jobs have a percentage of 50 percent or lower. But you can easily find positions that require more. For example, some engineering, training. and sales jobs have workers traveling 70 percent of the time! Some companies even offer positions that require 100 percent travel time.

It all depends on the industry and the unique position you’re applying for.

Understanding what a company means by “travel percentage” is important to grasp what an employer wants from a new hire. Travel jobs can be fun, but they’re also demanding. You’ll need to spend time away from your family and friends, and the lifestyle is much different than a standard nine-to-five.

While not always the case, many travel percentage requirements are negotiable. A question like this opens the door to that, giving hiring managers a better idea of what you can realistically do if hired.

Many job seekers fear answering a question like this because they believe that interviewers have something specific they want to hear. However, you can still be honest and set limits without hurting your chances of getting further into the hiring process.

Here are some tips on how to answer this question the right way.

1. Decide What You Want Ahead of Time

The most important thing you need to do is decide how much you’re willing to travel before you head into the interview. Nothing will ruin your chances faster than interviewing for a position that requires traveling, and saying you can’t travel at all (or aren’t sure how much you’re willing to travel). You likely won’t be in the running at all if that’s the case.

Do your research and read the job description closely. Employers are usually upfront about travel expectations. Travel percentages can be negotiable, but do note if the job posting mentions travel, some travel will be required.

Know what you want before you head into the interview. Think about how much travel you can do and how that might affect your life moving forward. Then, have a general travel percentage in mind.

Deciding how much you’re willing to travel will give you everything you need to answer this question confidently.

Interviewers don’t want wishy-washy answers or the dreaded “I don’t know.” If you want to sound confident and serious about this position, know what you want before your meeting.

It’s also important to look into how travel is structured for each position. While companies discuss travel time in percentages, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’ll spend X amount of days on the road and X amount of days in an office in your home city.

Some positions require you to travel several weeks at a time before spending a few weeks off at home. Those trips could be regular or sporadic based on the company’s needs.

Understand what you’re getting into and what the job requires. Do your research to avoid any surprises!

2. Be Honest & Clear

Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need to say that you’ll do whatever the company wants in order to get a job.

Travel is a big commitment. Employers and hiring managers know that. They understand that considerable travel is not for everyone, so they appreciate the honesty.

Be clear about whether you’re willing to travel most of the time or can only be on the road a few days out of the month. Be honest and set your boundaries.

The last thing any hiring manager wants to hear is a vague answer. Your response is important because it directly impacts your fit for the job. For example, some companies might have hard travel requirements that are non-negotiable. In those cases, they need a firm confirmation that you can or cannot meet their required travel percentage. Otherwise, you’d waste their time and yours moving forward. That’s why you should consider what you want from your job before the interview.

Be honest and clear. Don’t lie because you think it might increase your chances of getting a job. While lying might help you move further into the hiring process, it won’t do any good when you can’t hit the road once hired.

The best scenario is already knowing what travel percentage you can work. Discuss those limits during your interview. But you can also express interest in negotiations.

You can tell the interviewer you’re willing to travel but want to learn more about the other job expectations. While not as ideal as providing a percentage, that’s usually enough for interviewers to proceed. Interviews aren’t job offers, and you’re not signing contracts at that point.

So, there’s still room for further discussion. The most important thing is that you’re upfront and have some idea of what you can do going into the interview.

3. Show That You Understand How Travel Relates to the Job

Another important thing to do when answering this question is to demonstrate that you understand the job.

Travel jobs are appealing to many people. One concern that many hiring managers have is that applicants try to get the job because they simply think it’s a cool way to see new places. While that can be true for some jobs, you’re not getting hired to explore new cities and go on vacation!

It’s still a job, and you’ll have important responsibilities.

Show that you understand the job and are there for the right reasons. One way to do that is by talking about some of the unique responsibilities of the job or demonstrating that you know how important travel is for this position.

For example, you can connect the reason why this job requires travel to your work. If the job revolves around sales, you can mention that you understand that traveling is crucial to gaining more clients across the state. If it’s a consulting job, you can discuss how traveling to companies allows you to better assess the situation and build better connections inside companies.

This seemingly small detail makes a difference. It shows that you’re seeking this job for the right reasons and are committed to doing a fantastic job.

4. Highlight the Positives

Finally, highlight some of the positive aspects of travel. That doesn’t mean you should lean too heavily on wanting to get out and explore. Remember: You still have a job and must demonstrate your commitment to doing it.

However, mentioning some of the things you love about jobs that require frequent travel can reassure hiring managers that you’re up for the challenge. An example of this could be networking and meeting new people in a professional setting.

Travel jobs can be overwhelming for some people. It can lead to burnout, and many employers struggle with low retention rates for these positions.

The ultimate goal for hiring managers is to find someone who thrives in a job that requires traveling. The best people are those who love getting on the road and don’t mind some of the common pitfalls of being in a new place and spending time away from friends and family.

If you show this job will be a positive experience, hiring managers may put your application at the top of the stack.

Connect your past experiences to what you hope to gain from this new job. For example, you can refer to how great previous travel jobs were for you. If you don’t have any related work experience, you can mention times when you studied abroad or spent significant time on the road.

Focus on your love of new experiences and highlight all the great things you’ll gain from this job.

There are many ways to answer “Are you willing to travel?” and how you respond depends on your needs. But these examples will give you a good idea of the type of answers that interviewers love to hear.

In the first example, we have a candidate with some experience traveling in a previous job. They leverage that work experience to reassure the interviewer that they can handle the responsibilities.

“I am willing to travel for work. I traveled about 40 percent of the time in my last job. I’m prepared to do the same here because I know I’m comfortable with that amount of time on the road. I’ve learned how to manage and succeed despite the time away from home. In my last job, I’d spend weeks traveling to cities across the eastern seaboard. I got to work with great people in cities I enjoyed plus I found time to explore many beautiful states. I’m excited at the chance to do the same here while working to fulfill your company’s objectives.”

Our next example is straightforward. The candidate demonstrates that they understand the company’s expectations and use their previous experience to reassure the interviewer that they’re up for the task.

“I’m definitely willing to travel. In my last sales job, I spent about half my time on the road while traveling to cities around the state. It was a great experience, and I had no trouble getting comfortable doing it. The roughly 30 percent travel percentage mentioned in the job posting sounds more than acceptable to me. I have questions about the frequency and the average length of business trips, but I’m certainly willing to spend time traveling.”

Our final example comes from a candidate who has no travel experience. However, they go into the interview knowing what they want and provide a confident answer, demonstrating their understanding and willingness to work hard.

“I’m more than willing to travel; I’m looking forward to it. Not only do I enjoy working with new people, I also like the excitement of traveling to new places. Your job posting mentioned that the position will require at least 50 percent travel time. I can travel as much as 75 percent if the job requires that. I know that your company has offices across the western United States. As a trainer, I understand that visiting those offices and working with people directly makes a big difference in their success. I’m eager to get my hands dirty and do what I can to help others while improving the collective expertise of this company’s employees.”

As you can see, spending some time thinking about the percentage of time you’re willing to travel is just part of the equation. You also need to be honest with the interviewer about what works for you!

If you practice your answer and follow these rules, this question won’t cause you any trouble.

100 percent travel

Table of Contents

There are a wide variety of benefits that we have found, which every veteran should know about.

These range from priority health care to VA loan reductions.

What’s disappointing is the fact that the VA doesn’t do a great job letting service members know what kind of additional benefits (especially some life changing 100 percent disabled veterans benefits) are out there.

Getting to 100% isn’t the only way to take advantage of most services, but it does provide some serious help.

That’s why reviewing your current rating and determining if you deserve an increase is always worth it.

In this blog post, we will cover:

Educational Benefits

Other benefits.

  • Little known “extra” benefits
  • What does it mean to be 100 disabled? (and how to receive or increase your rating)

Breaking Down the Numbers: How Many Veterans Receive Disability Compensation?

As of 2023, there were approximately 4.3 million disabled veterans in the United States, with over 3.9 million of them receiving disability compensation from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) .

This number includes veterans with a wide range of disabilities, including physical disabilities, mental health conditions, and other medical conditions related to their military service.

The amount of compensation a veteran receives depends on the severity of their disability and the degree to which it affects their ability to work and function in daily life.

When you apply for VA health care through the VA health care system, you are assigned to 1 of 8 different priority groups .

Veterans are assigned based on the following criteria:

  • Military service history
  • Income level
  • VA disability rating
  • Whether or not you qualify for Medicaid
  • Other benefits (e.g. VA pension benefits)

100 percent Disabled Veterans meet the eligibility requirements for Health Care Priority Group 1, which is the highest priority group available.

There are a number of benefits that come with this group such as:

  • Preventative care
  • Hospitalizations and some inpatient services
  • Dependent health care
  • Medically related travel benefits
  • Dental care
  • Vision care and hearing aids

This is a huge benefit for 100 percent disabled veterans, which includes free health care within the VA health care system for disability conditions related to military service.

This applies to disabled veterans with at least a 50% rating. 100% disabled veterans receive completely free VA care.

Services include but are not limited to:

  • Emergency care
  • Primary care
  • Speciality care
  • Mental health services
  • Home health care
  • Dental and vision care
  • Geriatrics and extended care
  • Medical equipment
  • Prosthetics
  • Nursing home placement
  • Hearing aids

See the following sections for further information about some of these benefits.

The Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA) is a health insurance benefits program where the VA shares the cost of certain health care supplies and services with eligible beneficiaries.

If you are 100 percent permanently and totally disabled according to the VA, then your dependents qualify for completely free civilian healthcare.

The VA is authorized to provide eligible disabled veterans and other beneficiaries related to those veterans, travel coverage for:

  • Mileage reimbursement
  • Common Carrier costs (i.e, plane, train, bus, etc.)
  • Medically-necessary transportation (i.e. ambulance)
  • Transportation to and from the VA or a non VA health care system facility for medical examinations, treatment and care

In 2024, the current VA travel pay reimbursement rate is 41.5 cents ($0.415) per mile for approved, health related travel.

Dental Care , Vision Care and Hearing Aids

Dental care.

Dental care benefits are available to those with a service-connected disability rated at 100 percent, or receive Total Disability Based on Individual Unemployability (TDIU) due to their service-connected disabilities.

The eligibility for dental benefits is categorized by class.

The class for totally disabled veterans is Class IV, and you would be eligible for any needed dental care.

Vision Care

The VA is also able to cover the cost for eyeglasses, routine eye examinations and preventative care.

In order to receive these benefits, you must have a compensable service-connected disability, or a former POW, or were awarded a purple heart, or received an increased pension due to current housebound status.

The VA can pay for basic optometry services if you already have established healthcare benefits with the VA.

You can also receive visual rehabilitation or advanced eye care services for low vision and blindness.

Hearing Care

In order to receive hearing aids or other assisted hearing devices, you must qualify for VA healthcare benefits.

You can schedule an appointment to be evaluated by an audiologist.

The audiologist will make a clinical determination on the need for hearing aids/devices.

If you have a 100 percent disability rating (not temporary or IU), you will qualify for FREE VA dental care, vision care and hearing aid services.

VA Total Disability Individual Unemployability (TDIU), is an extra scheduler benefit for qualifying disabled veterans to be paid at the 100% disability rate, even if they may be below 100 percent.

While this isn’t a “traditional” 100 VA disability benefit, we listed this as a 100 VA Disability benefit because it basically acts as such.

Generally, you must be unable to maintain “substantially gainful employment” to qualify for TDIU.

You may be able to qualify for this regardless of your VA disability rating.

10-point Veteran Preference in Federal Hiring

Disabled veterans may be eligible for 0, 5, or 10-point Federal hiring preference in competitive appointments.

They may also be scheduled for non competitive appointments when they are eligible by law.

A Direct-Hire Authority (DHA) is an authority that the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) can give to federal agencies for filling vacancies during critical hiring times/shortages.

Veterans preference does not apply when selecting candidates under DHA.

Some companies also offer what is called Expedited Hiring Authority (EHA) for critically manned career fields, such as Defense Federal Acquisitions positions.

Survivors Pension

When a veteran passes, the surviving disabled veterans family members are entitled to survivors pension , also referred to as “death pension.”

The VA calculates this pension according to countable family income, but also disability and retirement payments, therefore a 100 percent disabled veteran would be getting the maximum benefit, and subsequently a higher survivors pension.

The TRICARE program provides comprehensive health care coverage, including health care plans, prescription medications, dental plans and programs for people with special needs for dependents.

The program may also reimburse inpatient and outpatient services, medical equipment, nursing care, and mental health care.

The Chapter 35 benefits program , also known as the Dependents Educational Assistance (DEA) program, offers benefits to eligible dependents of disabled veterans who are permanently and totally (100 percent) disabled due to a service-connected condition, and who are currently receiving TDIU benefits or died while on active duty.

These dependents can receive up to 35 months of full-time or equivalent benefits for:

  • Technical or vocational training
  • Independent study
  • Online distance learning
  • Correspondence courses
  • High School diploma or GED programs
  • Educational and career counseling programs

The Folds of Honor Foundation offers two scholarship programs for dependents of disabled veterans.

  • The Children’s Fund Scholarship serves K-12 students
  • Higher Education Scholarship (first bachelor degree or post-secondary certification)

Both of these scholarships are based on “unmet need.”

The scholarship can be used to fund any educational expenses, from tuition to books and other fees.

Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E) , provides job training and other services to eligible veterans with service-connected disabilities to help prepare them for and maintain employment or achieve independent daily living.

An eligible veteran is one with a service-connected disability rating of at least 20 percent with an employment handicap, or rated at 10 percent with a serious employment handicap.

Disabled Veterans with a VA disability rating of 10 percent or higher, qualify for a waiver of the VA home loan funding fee.

The VA funding fee applies to the VA loan amount, NOT the purchase price of the home.

But, if you have a service-connected disability rating of 10% or higher, you are exempt from the VA home loan funding fee.

Veterans may also use the Veterans Benefits Banking Program (VBBP) to identify and open an account at a participating bank or credit union, available to help find a financial institution easier. They can ensure you get paid faster, safer and with fewer fees.

Special Restorative Training or Special Vocational Training, helps dependents of the Chapter 35 benefits overcome or lessen the effects of physical or mental disabilities. This is to help work toward goals that are educational or training related.

This relatively new program, discharges the Federal Student Loan debt of veterans who are totally and permanently disabled with a 100 percent P&T VA rating, or who have a 100 percent Total Disability Individual Unemployability (TDIU) status.

Note: If you are a veteran with a 100 percent scheduler VA disability rating (neither P&T or TDIU status apply), you may still be eligible for the Disabled Veteran Student Loan Forgiveness.

Most states offer property tax exemptions for disabled veterans. Some states even have a full waiver of property taxes for 100 percent disabled veterans.

Not all states offer the same tax breaks , but it’s good to check with your state county tax assessor’s office to see if you qualify for any benefits.

You may end up saving a lot of money every year.

A surviving dependent can qualify for allowances to help pay for burial and funeral costs for a disabled veteran.

If the veteran died of a service-connected disability ON or AFTER September 11, 2001, the maximum VA burial benefit allowance is $2,000 or $1,500 for a Veteran who died BEFORE September 11, 2001.

Veterans who have a 100 percent disability rating, their dependents and unmarried surviving spouses are entitled to unlimited commissary and exchange store privileges.

The VA can aid in completing a DD Form 1172, Application for Uniformed Services Identification and Privilege Card, which you will need to access these benefits.

The Aid and Attendance Program is a VA pension program that covers the cost of daily living for housebound veterans or those who may be in nursing homes.

These benefits are a part of the special monthly compensation, added to the monthly VA Pension for qualified veterans and their survivors.

This program provides insurance for disabled veterans who have service-connected disability ratings from zero to 100.

Totally disabled veterans who are unable to work may be able to apply for additional coverage, outside of the up to $10,000 RH insurance program, of up to an additional $30,000.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program is a FREE resource for veterans who generally make $56,000 a year or less.

These volunteers help with free basic income tax return preparation with electronic filing.

100 percent disabled veterans can fly Space Available flights or Space-A flights for free.

The Space-A Program sills extra seating capacity on DoD aircrafts.

Air Mobility Command (AMC) has an extensive network of flights throughout the continental United States, Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands, Guam and American Samoa.

You will need to obtain a DD Form 2765, Department of Defense/Uniformed Services Identification and Privilege Card before taking a flight.

Special Adapted Housing (SAH)

You may be able to get an SAH grant if you are using the money to buy, build or change your permanent home (a home you plan to live in for a long time).

You must also meet these requirements:

  • Own or will own the home, and
  • Have a qualifying service-connected disability

Current grant offered in 2024: up to $117,014

Special Home Adaptation (SHA)

You may be able to get an SHA grant if you’re using the grant money to buy, build or change your permanent home (a home you plan to live in for a long time).

  • You or a family member will own the home, and
  • You have a qualifying service-connected disability

Current grant offered in 2024: up to $23,444

This grant program is available to veterans and service members who have been rated eligible for the Specially Adapted Housing section (SAH) or the Special Home Adaptation section (SHA) grant on a one time basis.

The grant is intended to assist eligible veterans adapt a family member’s home to meet the veteran’s special needs.

If you qualify for an SAH grant, you can earn up to $47,130 for 2024.

The VA may provide a one-time payment of no more than $25,603.02 in 2024 , to help you purchase a specially-equipped vehicle.

In special circumstances, one or more adaptive equipment grants to change a vehicle may be awarded.

You must be a service-connected disabled veteran to receive this payment.

If your clothing has been damaged by a medical device or by medications you may be taking, you may be able to get money every year to help purchase new clothes.

This is a disability compensation benefit known as an annual clothing allowance.

Both of these must be true in order to receive this benefit:

  • Your device or medication must cause damage to your clothes, and
  • You need this device or medication because of an injury or illness related to a service-connected event

Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance Traumatic Injury Protection (TSGLI)

Short-term financial support to help eligible service members recover from a severe injury.

If you were covered by SGLI and experienced a traumatic injury while in active military service, you can file for TSGLI or appeal a past decision.

One of the unique perks on this list, is a year-round National Parks pass that will get you into any National Park in the United States.

Here’s some more information about the pass:

  • A free, lifetime pass, plus a $10 handling fee.
  • May also be obtained free in person at a federal recreation site.
  • Provides entrance or access to pass owners and accompanying passengers in a single, private, non-commercial vehicle at Federal operated recreation sites across the country.
  • Photo identification may be required to verify ownership.
  • Passes are NON-REFUNDABLE, NON-TRANSFERABLE, and cannot be replaced.
  • The cost of obtaining an Access Pass through the USGS is ten dollars ($10).
  • At many sites the Access Pass provides the pass owner a discount on Expanded Amenity Fees (such as camping, swimming, boat launching, and guided tours).

The VA offers urgent care services to eligible veterans at a VA medical center or at in-network urgent care clinics.

Another unique benefit that made this list, is the Shades of Green Resort in Walt Disney World, Florida.

This resort offers the opportunity for veterans who have received an honorable discharge to have an opportunity to vacation at the resort between January and September.

Additional State Benefits Available

There are multiple state benefits available to 100 percent disabled veterans .

Each state has its own set of benefits and can range from health care benefits, hunting and fishing license exemptions, free passes to state parks and property tax exemption. You can also be eligible for specialized license plates.

For more specific information on the benefits available in your state and enrollment details, please click here .

What does it mean to be “100 Percent Disabled?”

A 100 percent disability rating, otherwise known as a total disability rating, is the highest percentage that can be given for service-connected compensation.

This rating is reserved for veterans who have debilitating service-connected disabilities that make them unable to maintain gainful employment and potentially unable to care for themselves or maintain quality of life.

How to Receive a 100% VA Disability Rating

The highest percentage that can be given for service-connected compensation purposes is a 100 percent VA disability rating, or total disability rating.

This rating is only available to veterans with extremely debilitating service-connected ailments that make them unable to work and mostly unable to care for themselves.

You start by filing a service connected claim. You may also want to consider VA unemployability with VA Form 21-8940 .

If you are unable to work and need someone to help take care of you, then a 100 percent rating may be appropriate.

Disability ratings range from 10% to 100%. The idea behind these ratings is that the veteran should be compensated according to the impairment that the disability would cause to the average person’s ability to earn a living.

This compensation generally comes in the form of monthly payments.

Individual Unemployability

When a service-connected disability, or disabilities, prevents a veteran from being able to secure and follow substantially gainful employment, he is entitled to a total disability rating based on individual unemployability (TDIU or IU).

In determining whether a veteran qualifies for TDIU, the VA should consider whether a veteran is capable of getting a job and whether he is capable of keeping a job.

Any job that the veteran can secure and follow must also be a job that is “substantially gainful.

Disabled Veterans Can Fly Space-A

Space-available passengers board a C-17 at Hickam Air Force Base, Hawaii, bound for Andersen AFB, Guam. (U.S. Air Force/Cohen A. Young)

Many disabled veterans are eligible to fly Space-A on military aircraft.

The 2019 National Defense Authorization Act allows veterans who are rated as permanently and totally disabled by the  Department of Veterans Affairs  to travel space available on military aircraft.

Veterans will be assigned a travel priority of Category 6, the lowest priority available, along with retirees and their dependents.

The dependents of eligible disabled veterans may also accompany the veteran on flights in the U.S. or its territories.

Related: 4 Tips for Flying Space-A

Authorized disabled veterans can travel in the continental United States (CONUS) or directly between CONUS and Alaska, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam and American Samoa.

Disabled veterans must have a DD Form 2765, Defense Department ID Card (Tan), in order to fly Space-A.

The Space Available Program

Space available flights, better known as Space-A or military hops, allow eligible passengers to fill unused seats on DoD-owned or -controlled aircraft. Space-A passengers can fly only after all the space-required passengers and cargo have been accommodated. Space-A passengers are then loaded in priority groups, with emergency leave being the top priority and retirees and disabled veterans rating the lowest priority.

See a full breakdown of all the categories here.

Space-A passengers can take up to two pieces of luggage at 70 pounds each; pets are not allowed.

Not all Space-A flights originate from military bases. Commercial airports such as Baltimore-Washington Marshall International and Seattle-Tacoma International also offer Space-A flights.

Long gone are the days of having to show up in person at the passenger terminal to register for a flight. Now, Air Mobility Command, which runs the Space-A program, lets you register for flights via email, and all Space-A terminals have Facebook pages where you can see what flights are coming up and how many seats are available.

Check out AMC's page for details on how to find your local Space-A terminal and instructions on how to register for a flight.

15 Super-soft Cashmere Sweaters, Pants, and Accessories to Keep You Cozy All Winter Long — Starting at $30

Yes, you can buy 100 percent cashmere without breaking the bank.

Travel + Leisure / Daisy Rodriguez

Cashmere has always been considered a luxury. Centuries ago, it traveled the Silk Road all the way from the mountains of inner Mongolia, where it was grown on goats, to the boulevards of Paris where it was beloved by the bourgeoisie. But thanks to globalization, one of nature’s finest natural fabrics is now far more accessible, and cashmere sweaters are one of the best things you can pack if you’re looking for lightweight, yet luxuriously soft layers you can wear with anything.

Cashmere has also become more affordable over the years. Of course, you can spend $600 on a gorgeous cashmere turtleneck you expect to see celebs sporting on the red carpet at Sundance. But thanks to brands like Quince , Naadam , and Uniqlo , it’s also possible to get stylish, super-soft cashmere sweaters for as low as $50 . Yes, $50. The best part is that a lot of these companies are committed to sustainable practices and paying goat herders fair wages. It may be 2023, but there’s still no synthetic substitute for cashmere.

And forget this “blend” business. While cashmere plays well with other fibers like cotton and merino, nothing is as soft as 100 percent cashmere. Sure, you’ll pay more for pure cashmere, but trust us, it’s worth it. With that in mind, below are some 100 percent cashmere travel essentials, all under $115. They include a travel writer-approved crewneck from Nordstrom, Naadam’s OG sweater, which the same cashmere-obsessed travel writer says is still holding up after six years and six continents, and plenty of accessories starting at just $30.

Quince Mongolian Cashmere V-neck Sweater

Don’t be fooled by the rock-bottom prices. Quince’s cashmere is Grade A, the highest quality on the market. This classic V-neck (which Quince says other retailers would sell for $125), comes in 13 colors and has an impressive 4.9-star average rating from more than 4,500 reviews.  “Love this sweater so much that I bought multiple colors as well as one for my mom,” wrote one shopper who says the quality is just as good, if not better, as the more expensive cashmere they used to purchase at Talbots.

Quince Mongolian Cashmere Sweatpants

Cashmere isn’t just for tops and accessories. Don’t believe us? Try these super-soft bottoms from Quince that normally retail for $188. They have a 4.8-star average rating from more than 1,500 reviews including this one that reads, “I can’t tell you how delighted I am with this item! The cashmere is thick, soft, and the brown color I ordered is a rich true brown.” Choose from eight colors, and consider getting the matching cashmere zip hoodie , also $100.

Naadam The Original Cashmere Sweater

Naadam didn’t invent the cashmere sweater, but it is the brand to thank for cashmere sweaters under $100. While their OG sweater, also available in Men’s , has gone up in price over the years (it used to be $75) it’s still a steal. It comes in dozens of colors, and this year, Naadam is offering monograms. Note: it runs small, so order a size up.

Madewell (Re)sourced Cashmere Socks

Yes, they’re pricey for socks. But they’re not just any socks. These are the softest and most sustainable treat for your feet that money can buy (and talk about a luxurious stocking stuffer for your friend that’s always on their feet). These cozy socks are made of recycled cashmere and come in four colors.

Villand Pure 100% Cashmere Scarf with Fringed Edges

Still shopping for the people on your list who appreciate the finer things in life? This fringed scarf comes in a designer gift box, so all you need to do is stick a bow on it. It comes in six colors and has amazing reviews. “This cashmere scarf is gorgeous. It is soft and beautifully compliments any outfit,” wrote one shopper .

WaySoft 100% Cashmere Beanie

With 850 five-star ratings, this ridiculously soft hat comes highly recommended. It’s available in 18 colors, and while it’s one-size-fits-all, it has the perfect amount of stretch. It also comes wrapped in tissue paper in a beautiful box. One shopper who gave this beanie as a gift wrote,  “I bought this item for my wife. She used it on a Christmas trip to Germany and absolutely loved it. She wears it religiously since her return.”

Fishers Finery Women’s 100% Pure Cashmere Gloves

Even if you dislike gloves, you’ll look forward to having an excuse to wear this super soft pair. They’re specifically designed for women’s hands and feature a stylish cable knit pattern. They only come in one size, but you can choose from 11 colors and even get the matching hat for $50. In a review titled “ Beautiful and functional ,” one shopper says they’re “especially good for travel” since they’re warm enough to warrant packing but not bulky.

Nordstrom Crewneck Cashmere Sweater

Originally $150, this best-seller from Nordstrom is currently $50 off. And unlike other items on sale, it’s still available in 17 colors and most sizes. It has nearly 900 five-star ratings, and one shopper who calls it “very lovely” wrote that they appreciate how lightweight it is and easy to hand wash. Just remember to lay it flat to dry so it retains its shape.

Nordstrom Cashmere Turtleneck Sweater

If you prefer the look of a turtleneck, consider this closet staple that is currently 34 percent off. It comes in six colors, and reviewers say it tends to run a little large. One shopper who says they bought it with the intention of having it for a long time loves how versatile it is. They can dress it up or dress it down and wear it both tucked in and out.

Uniqlo Cashmere Crew Neck Long-Sleeve Sweater

Uniqlo’s cashmere sweaters have also gone up in price over the years. But, the brand says it’s also improved their durability and added updated ribbing at the hem and sleeves. This classic crew, also available in Men’s , comes in 15 colors.

Uniqlo Cashmere Turtleneck Sweater

f you like a turtleneck with a slightly looser fit, you should try this top. Sure, it looks nice enough for cocktails with clients, but it’s also just as fitting for the couch. “If you feel like just cuddling up in a sweater, this is it,” wrote one shopper who said that it’s very good quality for the price.

Phenix Plaid Cashmere Scarf at Nordstrom Rack

Nordstrom Rack

Originally $150, this best-seller from Nordstrom is currently $50 off. And unlike other items on sale, it’s still available in 17 colors and most sizes. It has nearly 900 five-star ratings, and one shopper who calls it “very lovely” wrote that they appreciate how lightweight it is and easy to hand wash. Just remember to lay it flat to dry so it retains its shape.

Portolano Honeycomb Stitch Cashmere Headband

At 64 percent off, this headband from Portolano, a family-owned luxury Italian brand that’s been around for more than 100 years, is also a steal. Choose from three colors, including a beautiful Bark Heather which is almost sold out. So, hurry!

M by Magaschoni Button Front Cashmere Cardigan

This list wouldn’t be complete without a cardigan. Fortunately, M by Magaschoni makes an affordable one that makes the perfect outer layer. Choose from eight colors, or don’t choose and get multiple. One five-star review titled “nice quality cashmere, well made, thick and soft“ was left by a shopper who loves theirs so much they have both black and oat.

Stitch Fix Rella Cashmere Crewneck Sweater

This plush pullover from Stitch Fix comes in 15 colors, including stripes, and regular and plus sizes. Pair it with a skirt for Saturday night out and with jeans for Sunday brunch. It’s also nice enough to wear to the office on Monday.

Tourism surge drives flight ticket rates up 50 percent

Enchanting Shaoguan

China's tourism business is experiencing a strong revival this summer, driving up air ticket prices by up to 50 percent.

The "China travel" boom is sweeping the country, with incoming tourist orders this summer up 100 percent from the same period last year, according to Trip.com, China's global travel service provider.

Overall, orders from 14 countries, including Germany, Malaysia, and Thailand, who enjoy visa-free entrance into China have increased by 150 percent, with Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Chengdu, and Kunming among the popular incoming tourist destinations, Trip.com claimed.

Long-distance journeys are popular options for both domestic and outbound tourist markets, with major sporting events such as the Paris Olympics and Euro 2024 generating a travel boom to Europe, with tourist orders to France and Germany increasing by 80 percent and 150 percent, respectively, it said.

Tongcheng Travel, an online travel operator, said that the average air ticket price for domestic routes for the two weeks after June 22 was 795 yuan (US$109), up 7 percent from a week earlier, with certain popular routes experiencing growth rates of more than 20 percent.

Air tickets for international flights in early July had already recorded about a 50 percent increase from the same period in June. The jump is expected to accelerate in mid- and late-July due to the summer holiday travel peak, it said.

Domestic culture and tourism authorities have increased their efforts to attract visitors in anticipation of the summer tourism boom.

Southwest China's Yunnan Province has displayed its summer tourism splendor in Shanghai to strengthen cultural and tourism connections, with coordinated efforts planned to increase Yunnan and Shanghai's tourism markets.

The Yunnan Provincial Department of Culture and Tourism has produced a list of ten summer resorts, including Chuxiong, Yuxi, Dali, Lijiang, and Baoshan, known for their cool summer temperatures.

Mount Fangshan, in Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture, has 70 percent forest cover and a 17-degree summer temperature, making it an ideal summer resort alternative.

The Yulong (Jade Dragon) Snow Mountain is Lijiang City's largest natural air conditioner, while the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden features not only a variety of magical rainforest plants but also a dreamlike summer scene with fireflies flickering everywhere at night. This summer, the botanical park launched a night tour program that takes guests into the magical land of rare plants.

Erhai Lake in Dali, Yixiang Town in Pu'er, Fuxian Lake in Yuxi, Gengga Village in Baoshan, and Yuanmou Earth Forest Scenic Area in Chuxiong are some recommended places to go stargazing in the summer.

Shanghai and Yunnan will undertake coordinated promotion activities to entice inbound travelers.

Shaoguan, a tourist-rich city in south China's Guangdong Province, has also increased its collaboration with Shanghai in the cultural and tourism sectors, launching 1,000 tourist groups this summer and releasing cultural and tourism programs seeking business investment.

On Friday, Shaoguan launched 78 cultural and tourism projects for business investment in Shanghai, and tour groups of 1,000 Shanghai residents will go to the city this summer.

There are 30 ecological and health tour initiatives, 17 historical and culture-themed projects, and 11 hotel and bed and breakfast projects.

Among these, one will transform Caoxi Culture Town into a Zen-style tourism destination.

Shaoguan has quite a few tourist attractions, including 44 3A and above sites.

Top Budgeting App Reviews

Budgeting looks different for everyone, so we selected four picks for budgeting apps. We selected a well-rounded budgeting app, one designed for couples, another that's appealing for setting goals, and lastly one with more detailed budgeting features.

We have a mix of free budgeting apps and ones that have premium plans with subscription fees, so you can choose an option based on your financial needs and priorities.

Best Overall: Rocket Money

Rocket Money (previously known as TrueBill) is our best budgeting app overall because it has a variety of tools to help you save and limit spending.

Rocket Money has both a free plan and a premium plan. With the free plan, you'll be able to link bank accounts, credit cards, and investment accounts to track spending and you'll also be able to create a budget .

The premium plan includes concierge services, which review your bills and subscriptions to help you cancel or get refunds for these services on your behalf. It also includes premium customer chat, unlimited budgets, customizable budget categories, a savings account, real-time updated syncing, and a credit score report.

The app's standout feature is Bill Negotiation. You'll upload a copy of your bill, and Rocket Money will determine whether you can get the same service with the company for a lower price. Rocket Money may also help you get refunds if you're charged bank overdraft fees or late fees.

When Rocket Money negotiates a bill, you'll have to pay a percentage (you may choose any amount from 30% to 60%) of whatever it will save you for the year. If you plan to change your internet, cable, phone, or wireless provider in the next year, you could end up losing money, though.

Pricing: You may choose how much to pay each month through a sliding scale. Rocket Money has a free plan that's $0. The Premium plan has a 7-day free trial; after the free trial, you'll have to pay around $6 to $12 per month (the lower-price plans are billed annually instead of monthly).

Rocket Money Review

Regular Pricing: Free

Best for Saving for Financial Goals: Monarch Money

Monarch Money doesn't have a free plan. You can try out a 7-day free trial. However, after that, you'll need to pay a subscription fee. If you do not want to pay a subscription fee for a budgeting app, you'll want to consider one of our other picks.

Introduction to Budgeting Apps

Why use a budgeting app.

A budgeting app can help you understand where you spend your money. It's also useful for building and maintaining an effective budget.

The top budgeting apps let you create a monthly budget using customizable categories.

Many also help you save money effectively . For example, budgeting apps use your transaction history to make charts and graphs. You can use this information to analyze your spending patterns and figure out where to make adjustments in your budget.

Key Benefits of Budgeting Apps

The primary benefit of using a budgeting app is that it gives you a big-picture view of your financial situation.

Many budgeting apps let you link different types of bank accounts, investment accounts, credit cards , and loans. You'll be able to see all your accounts in one place and see how you're spending versus saving.

Budgeting apps also help you build better money habits. If you've struggled to maintain a budget in the past, it might be easier to track your spending on an app than completely on your own. Budgeting apps do the work for you by syncing all your accounts — you just need to make sure everything is synced correctly and make small adjustments when they aren't.

Features to Look for in a Budgeting App

User-friendly interface.

A good budgeting app has a design format that's easy to use. The app should load quickly and make it easy to get started. You should be able to create a budget on your own without much help. If you encounter technical difficulties, you should also easily be able to contact a customer representative through the app.

Syncing with Bank Account

Many easy-to-use budgeting apps for beginners allow you to sync savings accounts, checking accounts , investment accounts, or credit cards.

Apps often use Plaid to link bank accounts. Plaid can connect more than 11,000 U.S. banks and credit unions, including the best banks .

Expense Tracking

Once bank accounts are linked, your spending will be updated on the app so you have up-to-date information. A strong budgeting app will provide updates frequently, and during the same day so you can stay on top of your budget.

Customizable Budgeting Categories

Many budgeting apps allow you to create a zero-balance budget. With a zero-balance budget, you're figuring out where every dollar of your income is going. You can create budget categories for every expense. You can also create savings goals if you're setting aside money for a specific purpose, like a down payment on a home or a future vacation.

A good budgeting app allows you to make customizable budgeting categories rather than pre-set categories. That way, you can make a budget that's tailored to your life and make categories as broad or specific as you want.

Charts and Visual Analysis Features

A top budgeting app analyzes your habits so you can see how you manage your money over time. Some apps provide charts of your monthly budget so you can see how your categories compare to one another. Others might have visuals to indicate how much money you have left to spend in a certain category for that month.

Several budgeting apps also provide reports for broader areas of your finances. For example, you might be able to view your cash flow balance over several months or how your money in your retirement plans has grown over time.

How to Choose the Best Budgeting App for You

To find the right budgeting app, you need to know what features you're looking for. Are you looking for ways to cut back on spending? Do you want a free plan or a subscription plan for your budgeting app? Do you want a detailed breakdown of your finances or more of a general overview? Knowing the answers to these questions can help narrow down your options.

If you have your eye on a few budgeting apps, you can try out the free trials or free versions of each before settling on the right one. That way, you can see if the interface is also user-friendly and manageable for the long-term.

Setting Up and Using a Budgeting App

Step-by-step guide to setting up your budgeting app.

To use a budgeting app, you'll have to download it through the Android or Apple store. To set up most budgeting apps, you'll enter your name and email address. If the app charges a subscription fee, it will prompt you to sign up for a plan or free trial.

The best budgeting apps will walk you through the app's different features and help you get started. You'll typically be prompted to link accounts. Then, you can create a budget or set savings goals.

Tips for Effective Budgeting with the Apps

If you're new to budgeting apps, it may be helpful to start off with some structure.

For example, you could use a popular savings method like the 50/30/20 rule or pay-yourself-first strategy.

The 50/30/20 rule breaks down your budgeting, so 50% goes to needs, 30% goes to wants, and 20% goes to debt or savings. The pay-yourself-first strategy focuses on savings — you'll automatically transfer money from your paycheck to some of your savings and then distribute what's left over to your expenses.

Another tip for effective budgeting is to look at your expenses to see if they reflect your financial goals and values. If you have certain goals that are of higher priority than others, find ways to reduce spending in categories that aren't a priority for you. That might mean waiting before making a purchase, creating a meal plan or grocery list to limit spending on food, or auditing your subscriptions to see if there are any you can cancel.

Common Mistakes to Avoid on Budgeting Apps

Experts recommend trying out a budgeting app's free plan or free trial before committing to an annual plan.

There are many budgeting apps out there, so you want to try to find the one that best aligns with your financial needs. Testing a few apps can help you decide the best one, and it also keeps you from paying too much for a budgeting app that you won't end up using.

Pros and Cons of Budgeting Apps

Alternatives to budgeting apps, budgeting apps vs. spreadsheet or diy budgeting methods.

You may prefer building a spreadsheet budget if you don't want to link all of your bank accounts or credit cards in a mobile app. However, setting up and maintaining your budget will primarily hinge on how much work you're willing to put into it.

A budgeting app does the tracking for you. With a spreadsheet, you'll have to either start from scratch or use a template. Either way, a budgeting app still offers more comprehensive features.

Budgeting Apps vs. Personal Finance Software

Budgeting apps and personal finance software share the same features. The best option for you will depend on whether you have preferences on the tool's accessibility.

A budgeting app is primarily designed for mobile experiences. Some apps also have an online dashboard which you can access through your computer, but it is always something that's offered.

Meanwhile, personal finance software is designed for computer access. You'll either download the software to a desktop or use an online platform. Some will also have apps, but some features might not be available.

Budgeting Apps vs. Savings Accounts with Goals Features

Some of the best online banks have added unique features to their savings accounts to help customers with goal-setting.

If you're specifically looking for a way to save for goals, it may benefit you to get a savings account with buckets . Buckets are customizable tools that separate your savings so you can save for specific goals. Since they are an integrated bank account feature, they also might be easier to manage than a budgeting app.

If you would rather have more robust budgeting tools, a budgeting app will likely still stand out to you. Budgeting apps also connect investment accounts, credit cards, and loans, so you'll be able to see everything in one place.

Budgeting App FAQs

A budgeting app is beneficial for tracking expenses and sticking to a budget. It can also help you save for financial goals and prevent lifestyle creep .

To choose the best budgeting app for your needs, consider what your financial goals are and how a budgeting app can best help you achieve them. If you need help cutting back on expenses, you might consider a budgeting app with bill negotiation features. If you need help with savings, you might prioritize an app that helps with goal-setting features.

Most budgeting apps have encryption to store data, making them secure to use if you're linking your accounts. To keep your username and password safe, budgeting apps might also have multi-factor authentication so they can verify your identity when you're logging in.

A budgeting app can help you understand your financial situation so you can create a budget that saves you money over time. These apps can help you find areas where you can reduce your spending. Some also offer a bill negotiation feature so you can see if you can save money on subscriptions.

Yes, there are free budgeting apps available in the Apple and Android stores, though they typically have more limited features than apps with paid subscriptions. The best free budgeting app is Honeydue, which is specifically for couples.

Mint shut down in March 2024. You'll have to switch to Credit Karma if you want to continue using an Intuit personal finance platform, or you can switch to an alternative budgeting app.

In most cases, the best budgeting app for beginners will be one that makes budgeting easy — this means it has an easy-to-use interface and links to your accounts, so you don't have to enter every transaction manually. It can also be good to have an app that teaches you about money.

Rocket Money is our best budgeting app overall, and it has a free plan. If you're in a couple, our top pick is Honeydue which is also free to download.

Why You Should Trust Us: Experts' Advice on the Best Budgeting Apps

We consulted banking and financial planning experts to inform these picks and provide their advice on finding the budgeting app for your needs.

  • Sophia Acevedo, banking editor, Business Insider
  • Mykail James, MBA, certified financial education instructor, BoujieBudgets.com

Here's what they had to say about budgeting apps. (Some text may be lightly edited for clarity.)

What should I look for in a budgeting app?

Mykail James, MBA, certified financial education instructor, BoujieBudgets.com :

"My best tip for people who are looking to start using a budgeting app is to figure out what you're missing in your financial system. For example, if you are a person who knows that you want to stick to a zero-based budget, and you've been doing that manually, but you need maybe a little bit more help with the organization, then you can center your focus on searching for apps specifically solve your problem."

Sophia Acevedo, banking editor, Business Insider :

"I would look for features that would help me with my goals. Like if I'm trying to curb spending, I would look for a budgeting app that helps me minimize payments in certain spending areas."

How do I know if a budgeting app is right for me?

Mykail James, MBA, CFEI:

"Give it time. Every budgeting app is going to feel uncomfortable during the first month. Give it at least three months before deciding if it's not something for you. Actively try and use it before considering a switch."

Sophia Acevedo, CEPF:

"I would first try out the free version and see how it works. Some budgeting apps are entirely free, while others have different plans or trials at a variety of price points."

Methodology: How Did We Choose the Best Budgeting Apps?

At Business Insider, we aim to help smart people make the best decisions with their money. We understand that "best" is often subjective, so in addition to highlighting the clear benefits of a financial product, we outline the limitations, too.

First, we compiled a list of 18 popular budgeting apps available in both the Google Play Store and Apple Store.

Then, we reviewed each budgeting app for a week. To determine our top picks, we reviewed the initial sign-up process, pricing, budgeting tools, and user experience. We also considered whether each app accomplished everything it advertised, and how regular users reviewed the product on the Apple and Google Play store.

TSA breaks record for most individuals screened on a single day, readies for record-breaking Independence Day weekend travel volumes

WASHINGTON — As airline passengers prepare to take to the skies this Independence Day holiday, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is prepared for a sustained period of high passenger volumes. TSA expects to screen more than 32 million individuals from Thursday, June 27 through Monday, July 8, which is a 5.4% increase over 2023 Independence Day holiday travel volumes. On Sunday, June 23, TSA broke the record for most people screened on a single day, screening nearly 3 million (2.99 million) individuals . This summer’s record-breaking travel volumes reflect the role TSA and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) have in securing the nation’s transportation systems, while ensuring freedom of movement for people and commerce, which is vital to our country’s economic well-being.

TSA anticipates the peak travel day will be Friday, June 28, when the agency expects to screen more than 3 million individuals. TSA is staffed to meet its wait time standards, which are 10 minutes and under in TSA PreCheck lanes and 30 minutes and under in standard screening lanes. Seven of the top 10 busiest travel days ever have occurred over the past month.

“We expect this summer to be our busiest ever and summer travel usually peaks over the Independence Day holiday,” said TSA Administrator David Pekoske. “Compared to last year, we have cut our attrition rates by almost half and increased our recruiting as a result of the TSA Compensation Plan that was funded in the budget passed by Congress and signed into law by President Biden. The traveling public is on the move, which is a sign of a healthy economy. We are ready, along with our airline and airport partners, to handle this boost in passenger volumes.”

Airline passengers should be aware that security screening technologies may vary by airport. Although TSA follows strict standardized screening protocols, it is important for passengers to arrive early and listen to the guidance provided by Transportation Security Officers (TSOs).

Below are some frequently asked questions that provide an overview of the TSA technologies and procedures individuals may encounter during screening process.

Do I need to show a boarding pass to the TSA officer?

All airline passengers must have their acceptable ID and boarding pass ready at the security checkpoint entrance.

Do I need to take off my shoes?

TSA requires individuals in standard screening lanes to remove their shoes during the screening process. However, individuals 12 and under or 75 and older are always permitted to keep their shoes on during the security screening process.

Passengers with TSA PreCheck may leave their shoes on unless they alarm during screening. Most airports have dedicated TSA PreCheck lanes during some peak hours. Some airports have blended lanes where passengers with TSA PreCheck are screened in standard lanes, but they will receive a card indicating they have TSA PreCheck to carry with them during screening, and will be screened as a TSA PreCheck passenger.

Can family members go through the TSA PreCheck lane with me?

Teenagers aged 13-17 may accompany TSA PreCheck enrolled parents or guardians through screening when traveling on the same reservation and when the TSA PreCheck indicator appears on the teen’s boarding pass. Children 12 and under may accompany an enrolled parent or guardian in the TSA PreCheck lanes without restriction. This benefit is another reason to join the nearly 20 million people who have enrolled in TSA PreCheck. For customer flexibility, there are three TSA PreCheck enrollment providers from which passengers may choose: Telos, CLEAR and IDEMIA. For more information on any of the enrollment provider options and TSA PreCheck, visit www.tsa.gov/precheck .

Other advice from TSA

With more than 430 federalized, commercial airports nationwide, 685 security checkpoints and 2,412 security screening lanes, it may be challenging to know what to expect at any airport. Here are some additional tips to help ensure an efficient screening experience:

  • Pack smart. Always start packing with a bag that is empty to ensure there are no prohibited items present during security screening. Place electronics larger than a cell phone and travel size liquids at the top of your carry-on so they can be easily accessible if they must be removed. Remember that all liquids must be 3.4 ounces (100 ml) or less if they are in your carry-on bag.
  • Arrive at the airport two hours before scheduled boarding time. Allow ample time to park,  navigate to the terminal, check luggage with the airline if needed and proceed through the checkpoint. Most flights board 30-45 minutes prior to the scheduled departure time.
  • Review guidelines for traveling with children. Airlines may request proof of age documentation during check-in for children 12 and under traveling unaccompanied. Proof of age documentation must also be provided for children two and under planning to sit on an adult passenger’s lap. A birth certificate is an acceptable proof of age.
  • Get assistance prior to traveling. Do you have a question about an item and whether or not it is allowed through security screening? Download the MyTSA app and use the “What Can I Bring?” feature to determine whether an item is allowed or prohibited in carry-on luggage. You may also snap a picture of an item and send it to @AskTSA on X (formerly Twitter) or Facebook Messenger for real-time assistance. Passengers may text their question to TSA by texting “Travel” to AskTSA (275-872). Passengers who need additional assistance through security screening may request a TSA  Passenger Support Specialist (PSS). A PSS is a TSO who has received specialized training, including how to effectively assist and communicate with individuals with disabilities, medical conditions or those who need additional screening assistance. Individuals should request passenger assistance at least 72 hours in advance by contacting  our TSA Cares passenger support line  at (855) 787-2227. Live assistance for both the TCC and TSA Cares is available weekdays, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. ET, or weekends and holidays from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. ET.
  • Double-check your luggage tags. Many bags look alike, so passengers should tag every piece of checked luggage with their name and address. We also recommended they include additional addresses inside each bag in the event the outside tag falls off. When retrieving checked luggage at baggage claim, it is important that individuals check the tags to ensure they have picked up the correct bag.
  • Do you carry a firearm? Prepare, pack and declare. Passengers may travel with a firearm , but it must be secured as the passenger’s checked baggage; packed unloaded; locked in a hard-sided case and declared to the airline when checking in at the airline ticket counter. Firearms are prohibited at security checkpoints, in the secure area of an airport and in the passenger cabin of an aircraft, even if a passenger has a concealed carry permit or is in a constitutional carry jurisdiction. TSA does not confiscate or seize firearms. If a passenger brings a firearm to the security checkpoint on their person or in their carry-on luggage, the TSO will contact local law enforcement to safely unload and take possession of the firearm. Law enforcement may also arrest or cite the passenger, depending on local law. TSA may impose a civil penalty up to almost $15,000, and for the first offense, passengers who bring a firearm to a security checkpoint will lose TSA PreCheck® eligibility for five years. Second violations will result in permanent disqualification from the program and additional civil penalties.
  • Do you have TSA PreCheck? Make sure your Known Traveler Number (KTN) is in your airline reservation. TSA PreCheck passengers do not need to remove shoes, belts, 3-1-1 liquids, laptops, food items and light jackets at the TSA checkpoint. TSA’s wait time standards for TSA PreCheck lanes are under 10 minutes whereas as standard lanes are under 30 minutes. If you are not yet enrolled in TSA PreCheck, you may enroll via one of TSA’s authorized enrollment providers starting as low as $77.95 for a five-year membership. Most new enrollees receive their KTN within three to five days. Members may renew membership online up to six months prior to expiration for another five-year term starting as low as $68.95. Visit TSA PreCheck at www.tsa.gov/precheck for more information, and to begin your enrollment.
  • Respect frontline aviation workers. Violence and unruly behavior in airports and onboard aircraft are not acceptable and will result in significant delays at security checkpoints. TSOs, along with all frontline airport and airline employees and local law enforcement, are working together to ensure safe and secure travel. Assaulting a TSA employee is a federal offense and will result in penalties and/or arrest.

Americans are the worst (globally) at taking vacation time: Here's how many days we take

100 percent travel

  • Americans take the least vacations globally, averaging just 11 days.
  • Only half of Americans plan to use all their allotted time off.
  • The French are doing the opposite. In the survey, France won the spot as the country that gets the most days off, about a month.

Summer vacation mode may be in full swing, but it turns out Americans aren’t the ones packing their bags, according to a new study by travel platform Expedia.

Expedia’s 24th annual Vacation Deprivation Report, which surveyed 11,580 people across 11 countries in March and April, found Americans to take the least vacations globally. Sixty-five percent of U.S. respondents said they feel as if they don’t take enough time off – the highest rate in 11 years.

Americans not only receive the fewest vacation days each year, averaging just 11 days, but only half of them even plan to use all their allotted time off.

Going abroad? Here's how to to tip in Europe, Africa, Asia, Latin America, Australia and New Zealand

How much time off do Americans take?

The study found that Americans take 11 days off a year on average.

Learn more: Best travel insurance

The reasons are all too relatable: Americans said they’re just too busy, and planning a vacation can be “overwhelming.”

Compared with the rest of the world, Americans are almost twice as likely to go a year or more without taking a vacation. Japan, France and Hong Kong were all found to have healthy holiday habits in the study. (Hong Kong respondents actually took more time off than their earned paid time off.)

"Vacations are not a guilty pleasure, yet that's the way Americans have been treating time off for years now," said Mel Fish, vice president of Global Public Relations, Expedia Group Brands, in a statement to USA TODAY.

“Guilt, hustle culture, and the stress of planning a trip are why 65% of Americans say they're 'vacation deprived,' the highest rate in over a decade of Expedia tracking it. With more than half of Americans not using all their PTO annually, despite getting the fewest amount of vacation days globally, we're clearly overdue for an overhaul when it comes to our relationship with vacation time.”

Even worse, about 19% of Americans said they save up their vacation days for a big trip and end up not even going.

While Americans grind away at work and manage their busy schedules, the French are doing the opposite. In the survey, France won the spot as the country that gets the most days off, about a month. (You may have heard of the famous French August shutdown , when many businesses close and people get away from the cities.)

In Japan – one of the surveyed countries where its residents take the second-least amount of days off at 12 days – vacations are spread out throughout the year, about every month or so. That contributes to the Japanese having one of the lowest levels of vacation deprivation, according to the study.

Americans may want to follow suit and take that step to finally book the trip on their bucket list. Going on vacation comes with a slew of benefits for someone’s well-being , like reducing depression. Taking a trip even helps us show up in our daily lives and jobs better. Unfortunately, Americans ranked the lowest out of the 11 countries for prioritizing rest and relaxation during their trips. (Seriously, turn off the email notifications.)

“You know how sometimes your computer needs a reboot? Our brains are much the same,” said Becky Spelman, a psychologist who partnered with Expedia, in a statement to USA TODAY. “Over time, work stress can build up to an unsustainable level and our brain functions start to slow down and work less effectively.”

Tips to book that trip

◾ Go for the long weekend. Because a big annual trip can be costly and come with a lot of pressure, opt for booking shorter getaways, like a long weekend . Although holiday weekends can cause prices to surge, taking a Friday or Monday off for a long weekend during shoulder season means fewer crowds and lower prices.

◾ Use technology. Artificial intelligence travel planners and price trackers are at our fingertips, and those can make the research and planning of booking a trip a little less overwhelming. Using a flight tracker to monitor flight costs can help you score the best deal. And if you don’t know where to go, an AI travel planner from Expedia or Booking.com can help you find accommodations and even decide on a destination based on your interests.

“When we take a break, it’s easier for our brains to absorb new information, process new sensations and create new memories – a process known as ‘cognitive flexibility,’” Spelman said. “The benefits can last long after the vacation is over. By taking time off and ‘rebooting’ our brain, we return refreshed, which can lead to longer-term job satisfaction.”
