Online Retails vs. Retail Stores

Good ponchos are hard to find in physical stores. You’ll be hard-pressed to find anything better than Frogg Toggs at big-box supermarkets, and outdoor stores like REI have a limited selection. Rain ponchos haven’t spiked in popularity yet. Jackets still rule the clothing racks.

Online is your best bet, especially if you’re looking to support a small cottage company like Cedar Tree or Zpacks as they only sell through their own online shops.

The Future is Poncho

As gear companies push ultralight technology to its limits we’re seeing an increase in multi-functional outdoor equipment. Modern rain ponchos are made from extremely lightweight materials. They’re rain jackets, wind jackets, pack covers, shelters, sunscreen, and picnic blankets all in one.

Who knows what they’ll transform into next? Poncho backpacks? Poncho sleeping bags? Poncho trail-runners? That last one might be stretching the imagination a bit, but the others are real possibilities.

For short day hikes, I still prefer a rain jacket, but once I strap on a backpack it’s a poncho or no go. What’s your preference?

I’ve got the packa, haven’t used it a lot yet and I added snaps to the zipper flap. This way it gives more ventilation as I don’t need to zip it up if it’s calm out. Couple of times I’ve used it, I’m liking it….

I wouldn’t waste my $ on a poncho. However if I did, I see know reason to spend anymore than $5…

My U.S. Military Poncho is so versatile; I’ve used it in all 4 seasons and all kinds of precipitation. I’ve worn it with and without a backpack. A couple of times, I used it with a lightweight blanket as a way to keep dry, warm and sleep. Rain jackets have their place for sure; however, if I can only take one, the jacket stays home.

serious question – how can i get one of those military ponchos? My husband and I have 30 year old ponchos that are dying and struggle to find another long enough (husband 6’2″ and wears it to mid calf). We are in our 60’s so joining the military is out 🙂

Hi Janet! I wanted a second military poncho to match the one issued to me 15 years ago. There are a lot of knock-offs out there. The real one, from my experience, is made by Orc Industries. The best place to find them now are surplus stores. I got my second one from armynavyoutdoors.com. Good luck!

I am ahopping for a poncho because I am often using a walker and since it requires 2 hands and that of course is all I have, I can’t use an umbrella. I’m sure I’m not the only one with this problem but you don’t appear to be aware of it.I will be 79 in a couple of weeks.

Ponchos are a seasonal item for most retailers and brands, so they tend to go out of stock during the summer.

I wish poncho manufacturers would stop seeing them as one size fits all and reviews would stop praising their “generous length”. As a small woman, it is difficult to find a good one that doesn’t drag on the floor or threaten to trip me.

I love ponchos and usually have one in my daypack, but another con is that they can get bothersome and unwieldy when the wind is wild. Always good to keep a length of waist sized cordage handy to secure it to your midsection.

The Outdoor Products Backpacker Poncho is an excellent rain poncho for backpacking because it’s designed to hold large backpacks.

Rain ponchos for backpacking save you the pain of purchasing and packing a separate pack cover. Plus, they’re usually more waterproof than rain jackets.

This is a very light rain poncho that folds up into a mesh pouch so that it won’t mildew. 

I really like this poncho overall, but I wish it had chest pockets. They’re excellent features on rain ponchos because they’re a convenient place to put a map or phone without having to dig around in your regular pockets and get things wet. 

The hood on this poncho is anatomically shaped, which I love because I hate when hoods are way too big and just slide off all the time. 

The hood also comes with a cinch cord to keep it tight around your face and web-tie cords at the corners to double as a rainfly.

What sets the Outdoor Products poncho apart from others on this list is that the extra-long backpack compartment folds and snaps away so you can wear it comfortably on a day hike.

As a backpacker, I ditched the Outdoor Products Multipurpose Poncho because the backpacking cut works just as well as any other ponchos for hiking

#2 Cedar Tree Packa

Straight up, I love the Cedar Tree Packa , and you can tell this rainproof hiking poncho was made by some serious backpacking nerds (aka, my people). 

The Packa comes with three different fabric options going from 15D and 20D silicone-coated nylon to a 40D breathable specialty fabric made by Polymax. 

They are upfront in saying that the two lighter fabrics (the 15D and 20D) are not breathable but have heavy-duty waterproof ratings (2000mm). 

The heaviest-weight fabric (40D) is breathable and still performs well in the rain but doesn’t have a millimeter rating to go with it. 

There are a few other nuances that differ among the three fabric choices as well. 

For example, the 30D and 40D fabrics have taped seams, but the 15D doesn’t. But they’re not leaving you “out to dry,” so to speak – the 15D poncho is made with a cotton blend thread that swells when wet to keep water out. 

Ok, now the thing I like about this backpacking poncho the most: the design. 

Packa rain ponchos are designed to be a pack cover first and foremost. You strap it on your pack and let it be. 

If rain starts to come down, you can reach over your head to loosen the hood, sleeves, and body of the poncho. The poncho will still cover your pack, but you don’t have to take it off to stay dry. 

The Packa also fits a little more snugly than a typical backpacking poncho, which keeps it from blowing around in heavy wind. 

Additionally, the Packa has a front pocket and pit zips for ventilation. And it has a drawstring hood, bottom hem, and sleeves, which make it easy to customize for your particular size. 

The packed size isn’t totally clear for the Packa, but it’s around 10’’ x 12’’, and it can also make a great backpacking pillow. 

Finally, if I’m being picky, I only wish it had a firm brim to help keep the rain off my face better.

#3 Hazard 4 Poncho Villa

The Hazard 4 Poncho Villa is a re-done version of an old-style military poncho, and the new version keeps a few remnants of that history. 

The Poncho Villa has a velcro patch where you can put an ID and is designed to fit loosely so that you can easily put a backpack underneath it. 

The poncho fully covers the upper body and your upper legs and has grommets around the edge, making it usable as an emergency shelter or tarp.

The hood also has a cinch on it (in two places!) and has a few extra side snaps to make it fit more snugly in windy weather. 

I like that this rain poncho has the option of a fleece liner, but note that a fleece liner would be pretty bulky when packed. 

One thing to note is that although this poncho has taped seams on the entire garment, it’s best suited for light rain.

The poncho has a somewhat larger packed size, but it still folds into its large chest pocket. With that said, the Poncho Villa is a little on the heavy side for backpacking at 2.3 lbs.

#4 OneTigris TENTSFORMER Rain Poncho

The OneTigris Tentsformer Rain Poncho is another tactical-style backpacking poncho designed with particularly appealing features for bushcrafters (aka hardcore survivalists).

And even if you’re not a bushcrafter, this is still a very good backpacking or hiking poncho. 

As a tactical-style poncho, it has velcro on the sleeves to attach a patch or badge. 

And one really neat thing about this poncho is that it can double as a simple emergency shelter, sleeping bag cover, or ground cover, and they even give you some tent stakes and guy lines. 

The poncho is very lightweight, only 22.5 oz, but has an excellent material strength rating. 

75D is very heavy-duty when it comes to rain ponchos, and the nylon has been treated with a polyurethane (PU) coating, giving it a 1500mm waterproof rating.

The hood is also adjustable but doesn’t have a brim or a chest pocket. 

One thing I especially like about this design is the leg length. It hits mid-calf on most people. I appreciate that amount of coverage because carrying rain pants into the backcountry is a pain.  

One thing about the zippers on this poncho – hardware matters, people! 

One of the world’s biggest and best zipper makers is YKK, and most outdoor gear makers using their zippers will brag about it. I know, nerdy, but details matter – and the OneTigris has YKK zippers! 

Some of the cons of the OneTigris include the fact that it doesn’t have a chest pocket, and the sleeves are a little short. Also, since it can’t cinch (except around the hood), it may flap around a bit in high wind.

The VUADE Hiking Backpack Poncho is the best waterproof hiking poncho for the environmentally conscious. 

Vuade is a European brand that features a waterproofing method that doesn’t use harmful fluorocarbons (PFCs). 

Simply put, PFCs are harmful to human health and the environment, but Vuade has transitioned its entire collection away from these artificial chemicals.

Vuade states that regular reapplication of a waterproofing spray is necessary, but frankly, that’s true for most waterproof products. 

This backpacking poncho is waterproof, breathable, and suitable for heavy rain. 

I couldn’t find the fabric specifications I usually look for when evaluating a high-quality rain poncho. However, in this case, I am letting that go since this is a European brand, and they may not use the exact measurements that Americans do. 

The poncho also has long sleeves, an adjustable hood, and hits at mid-calf. Even better, since this is a loose-fitting poncho, you can use snaps between the legs to keep it from blowing in the wind. The poncho also has a front chest pocket, which you know I love for keeping my essentials within arm’s reach. 

The Vuade rain poncho is roomy enough that you can fit a backpack underneath it or, if you have a large backpack, you can zip off the back to fit your backpack. 

Lastly, this poncho is lightweight, coming in at just a few ounces, and can be packed into the chest pocket. 

Vuade makes rain ponchos for both men and women and in various sizes and colors.

#6 Mil-Tec RipStop Wet Weather Rain Poncho

The Mil-Tec RipStop Wet Weather Rain Poncho is the best rain poncho for hiking and doing wildlife photography. 

This poncho is traditionally designed by Sturm, a European military surplus store, so the intended audience for this product is hardcore outdoor people . 

However, the color pattern on this military rain poncho – drab olive or camouflage – is also great for sitting still and blending in while doing wildlife photography! 

Some ponchos can be noisy (crinkly) when you move, but this one isn’t very loud – another essential element for viewing wildlife.

This is a great addition to your rain gear because it’s another product that can double as a simple emergency shelter.

It also has high-quality grommets along the edge. With a couple of lightweight tent stakes and some paracord, you could easily make it into an awning. 

Additionally, this poncho has a drawstring hood and the waterproof rating on it is outstanding at 5000mm.

The waterproof rating on this poncho is excellent, but take note of the product used. 

Rather than a waterproof polyurethane (PU) coating, it uses polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which doesn’t stand up quite as well to abrasion and oil as PU coating does. 

Finally, this rain poncho for hiking won’t cost you an arm and a leg. It’s one of the more reasonably priced ponchos made from quality materials. 

I couldn’t find the packed size dimensions for this poncho, but I’d estimate it to be about 8’ ’x 10’,’ which is roughly equivalent to many of the other ponchos on the list.

#7 Anyoo Waterproof Rain Poncho

The Anyoo Waterproof Rain Poncho is the best waterproof poncho for those on a budget. This is a simple, few-frills, lightweight, waterproof poncho that will serve you well in a pinch. 

This poncho has waterproof fabric rated at 3000mm, which is an excellent rating. 

They label it as PU 3000mm, which means it’s coated with polyurethane. However, other product descriptors say it’s coated with PVC, which is a slightly lower-quality waterproofing product. 

The fabric itself is 210T (thread) ripstop polyester, and again, polyester is a cheaper fabric than nylon. That said, I still think this is an excellent addition to your rain gear stash.  

It has a very long, rigid brim on the hood, which I love because you need a brim or a baseball cap to keep the rain off your face. The hood is also adjustable, and the total weight is very low at just 9 oz. 

This is a multi-use poncho with grommets along the edges. It doesn’t have sleeves, but it has snaps along the sides so you can batten it down if the wind gets up. 

Most importantly, the Anyoo Waterproof Rain Poncho is big enough to have a backpack underneath, and the price is excellent. 

This is one of the more affordable ponchos on this list and would be great for kids or concertgoers as well as hikers.

#8 Onewind Silnylon Ultralight

The Onewind Silnylon Ultralight is a great rain poncho for backpacking because of its small pack size, and, as the name suggests, it’s very lightweight. 

This rain poncho has an adjustable hood with a high neck and is made of high-quality 15D nylon treated with silicone. 

As with other waterproof ponchos, the design is made more effective with loops and hooks around the bottom and arms so you can make sleeves and keep them closer to your body. 

This piece of rain gear also has velcro on it, which can be a double-edged sword. 

I have a few shirts that have mini-tears in them now due to the velcro fasteners on the sleeves of my jacket. Onewind avoids this problem by using a “baby soft” velcro, which means it won’t tear your clothes. 

The overall shape of the poncho is a big rectangle, and you can use it as an emergency shelter, sleeping bag cover, or ground cloth too. 

To use it as a shelter, you simply twist the hood around itself so water can’t get through, and then you have a solid tarp to use for a variety of purposes. 

The poncho is loose enough to accommodate a big backpack, up to 70L. This is a unisex rain poncho, so ladies, make sure you order a size smaller!

I couldn’t find a millimeter rating for the waterproof material. However, based on the fabric description (silnylon), I know it must be made of nylon (which is good quality) and likely treated with silicone, which is a good waterproofing material.

#9 Sea to Summit Ultra Sil Nano Poncho

The Sea to Summit Ultra Sil Nano Poncho is another contender for the best backpacking poncho. It packs down incredibly small and is very lightweight. 

The Sea to Summit Ultra Sil Nano is made from ultra-sil nano fabric, which means the nylon has been “siliconized” and treated with a polyurethane waterproof coating. The resulting waterproof rating is 12000mm. 

Remember that fabric must be at least 1000mm to be considered a waterproof material. 

This type of fabric and level of weather protection make it small and lightweight, and as an additional bonus, lightweight fabric like this tends to be more breathable. The tradeoff is that it’s going to suit you best in lighter rain conditions. 

This multipurpose rain poncho can be made into a two-person shelter, and it has snaps on the side for windy conditions. 

The Sea to Summit poncho is a unisex, one-size rain poncho, so it may run slightly big on petite women.

#10 Frogg Toggs Ultra-Lite2 Poncho

The Frogg Toggs Ultra-Lite2 is the best camping rain poncho for families because it’s an excellent combo of price and performance. 

I also think the Frogg Toggs Ultra-Lite is good for families because they boast that it’s “blood resistant.” I find that a slightly weird thing to brag about and I think the statement is geared toward fishermen. But, blood happens in a family with lots of outdoorsy and adventurous kids. 

This is a very lightweight poncho at just nine ounces. You’d have to pay for an expensive poncho to get one too much lighter than that. 

Although the product listing says this is a men’s poncho, it’s actually unisex. The fabric is made of three layers, and each layer provides a different benefit. 

The outer layer is polyester, which is pretty standard on lower-cost ponchos. The middle layer is a proprietary material called DriPore Gen 2, which is fully waterproof, windproof, and breathable. 

The third layer is a nonwoven polypro, which is short for polypropylene. Polypropylene isn’t woven; it’s poured. The resin-based material creates a porous matrix that is still breathable but water-resistant. 

And, if you find that these fancy materials don’t live up to their hype for some reason, Frogg Toggs offers a one-year warranty. 

Lastly, the simple design has an adjustable hood with snaps on the sides to keep the wind at bay. 

That said, the snaps aren’t always the most durable and sometimes pop open in the intermediate wind.

#11 Rumpl NanoLoft Poncho

The Rumpl NanoLoft Poncho is very different from the other ponchos on this list, but hey, I had to make sure you had a good variety. 

This insulated poncho is made of polyester, making it one of the best rain ponchos for chronically chilly women (like me!). 

The front of the Rumpl NanoLoft Poncho has a large pocket, and the whole thing is machine washable. The poncho packs up into a built-in stuff sack and can be folded into a pillow. 

Another thing that makes this different from the other ponchos on this list is that it’s a stylish rain poncho! 

The colors and design are inspired by an 80’s ski jacket, and let’s be real, those are having a moment right now. 

Besides the fun colors, it has a hidden insulated drink pocket and is made of 100% recycled materials. 

One of the downsides of this poncho is the sleeve length. They are about three-quarter’s length, which isn’t ideal. It’s also a bit heavy for those looking for ultralight camping, and the packed size isn’t tiny (which is fine if you use it as a pillow). 

Finally, while this rain poncho excels in windy conditions, it’s not fully waterproof (just water-resistant), making it best for light weather protection only.

Buying Guide: How to Choose the Best Rain Poncho for Backpacking

What to look for in a backpacking rain poncho.

Waterproof Rating

Waterproof ratings can be confusing. You can see our other articles for more information on understanding camping gear fabric ratings, such as our guide on how to waterproof a tent .

When it comes to rain ponchos, the two most essential rating specs are denier rating (D), explained below, millimeter rating, and what the material was treated with.  

Many waterproof rain ponchos are treated with either a silicone, polyurethane (PU), polyether urethane (PE), and/or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) coating to make them more waterproof. 

The rating given to treated material is in millimeters (mm) and measures how many millimeters of water can sit on the fabric before water starts to leak in. 

Look for ratings over 1000 millimeters when shopping for fully waterproof rain protection (that goes for tent materials too). 

The best rain ponchos will also clearly state what their fabric ratings are!

Keep in mind that the most waterproof poncho on the market may not be the best poncho. A larger millimeter rating may mean better rain protection, but it can be a tradeoff for breathability. 

It can be hard to judge the material of a waterproof poncho because many manufacturers use proprietary materials types/names that are designed to sound cool and fancy. No matter what type of material they’re using, look at the denier rating. 

The denier rating (D) of a fabric is the thickness of the strands of material. Silk has a denier rating of 1. Many high-quality tents have ratings of 60D or larger. 

For a waterproof poncho, look for a rating of at least 15D. Lightweight rain ponchos will often have lower denier ratings, but that isn’t necessarily bad. 

“Waterproof breathable fabrics” is almost a misnomer, and it can be challenging to find a balance between the two. 

As with the millimeter rating, the higher the denier, the bulkier the material, and the less breathable it will be. You know what this feels like if you’ve ever made the mistake of wearing rain jackets over tank tops in high humidity. 

For backpacking or hiking ponchos, I recommend long sleeves and for it to hit at least mid-thigh. That way, you’ll have the most coverage all over your body.

If you’re a particularly large or small person, make sure the poncho comes in a size that works for you; otherwise, it will either be a tripping hazard or completely ineffective. 

If you’ve read any of my other articles, you know how jazzed I get about pockets on my camping gear. The same goes for rain ponchos. 

Having a big front (waterproof) chest pocket is clutch. 

It’s a huge pain to search around under a poncho for your map/compass/phone/snacks/whatever. Keeping it on your chest is way more convenient.

Polyurethane (PU) Polyether urethane (PE)

Polyurethane (PU) stands up very well against abrasions, other chemicals, and oil (think food stains). 

Polyurethane waterproofing spray is very commonly used on outdoor gear and ponchos. In fact, it’s probably the most common one I see. 

Polyurethane is inexpensive and can be reapplied in many coatings to make the fabric very, very waterproof. It can also be combined with other chemicals that provide fire retardancy to fabrics. 

Despite its popularity, it doesn’t last forever and will naturally degrade after several years. 

Additionally, items treated with PU are more liable to tear as the PU coating brings down their tear strength. 

However, this shouldn’t be a problem for materials that are already very strong or durable (think materials with high denier ratings). 

Polyether urethane (PE)

Polyether urethane (PE) is similar to PU but is less commonly used. For the purposes of this explanation, just know that if you see PE in a fabric description, it acts similarly to PU. 

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) stands up well against abrasion and other chemicals but poorly against oil stains. 

It’s generally a less durable coating than PU and is sometimes used on bargain items. 

Silicone is another common spray used to waterproof materials and is the gold standard for waterproofing. 

You may be familiar with it from non-stick cookware. 

Silicone doesn’t naturally break down the way PU and PE do and is highly water-resistant (hydrophobic). Because it’s so hydrophobic, it’s also very mildew-resistant. 

Also, unlike PU and PE, silicone coatings actually make fabric stronger, not weaker. 

Sometimes Silicone is combined with PU and you’ll see it abbreviated sil/PU. One side of the fabric is often treated with PU and the other with silicone. 

Other names you may run into are silnylon (nylon treated with silicone). Fabric treated with just silicone will technically be described as sil/sil. 

The downsides to sil/sil fabrics are that they’re more expensive than sil/PU or PU fabrics alone, and it’s hard to tape the seams properly. They’re so non-stick, it’s hard to apply other coatings (aka fire retardant chemicals) to them.

The most important piece of care instruction is to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Different waterproof coatings have different care specifications. 

Below I’ll give you some general guidelines for cleaning waterproof items (this includes tents too). 

Never machine wash waterproof ponchos (or rain jackets, for that matter). 

Even the best rain poncho on the market can’t withstand the agitation of a machine wash cycle. 

The waterproof coating on outdoor gear is delicate, and even with excellent care, will begin to flake off or become less waterproof over time. 

Rather than machine washing, hand wash rain ponchos to preserve the chemical treatment. 

Use a gentle, eco-friendly soap. Avoid detergents!

Using harsh chemicals will ruin the finish on your poncho. Instead, opt for a mixture of water and vinegar or a mild detergent. 

Use a microfiber cloth

If you don’t have a microfiber cloth, use a soft wash rag or anything that isn’t too abrasive. A dish sponge may work too if you don’t use the scrubby portion. 

Line-dry your poncho

Backpacking rain ponchos buying advice or what to consider

Many affordable backpacking rain ponchos are constructed from thin, tightly woven waterproof fabrics such as PU-coated polyester taffeta. These fabrics are treated with a liquid protective film made of PU, providing excellent water-repellency and enhancing the fabric’s strength, tear resistance, and abrasion resistance. Most of these waterproof poncho models are either single-coated or double-coated, indicating that the coating has been applied once or twice. Notable examples in our review include the Outdoor Products Multipurpose Poncho , the Arcturus Lightweight Waterproof Rain Poncho , and the best design for light rain – Anyoo Waterproof Rain Poncho . Another cost-effective and efficient rain poncho design incorporates polypropylene (PP), an inexpensive thermoplastic polymer similar to polyethylene. PP is widely used for various plastic items, including clear bags, ropes, and carpets, and is known for its versatility. The best budget-friendly design FROGG TOGGS Ultra-Lite2 is crafted from thin, nonwoven polypropylene.

Other commonly used materials for backpacking ponchos include nylon (or polyamide) and polyester, which can be either coated or non-coated. It’s important to note that nylon should always be PU, PVC, or silicone-impregnated since the nylon fiber itself is not inherently waterproof or water-repellent. Without a coating or waterproof fabric , a nylon poncho will quickly become soaked in the rain. This is not the case with the Snugpak Enhanced Patrol Poncho , which is the top-ranked option. It is crafted from lightweight and durable nylon fabric that feels soft to the touch and is coated with a PU coating. Treated with a durable water repellent (DWR), its fabric has a waterproof rating of 5000 mm.

Unlike nylon, polyester is naturally water-repellent . That’s why you can find polyester models with and without the application of a waterproof or water-repellent coating such as PU (polyurethane), PVC (polyvinyl chloride), or silicone impregnation ( Helikon-Tex U.S. Poncho and  Hazard 4 Poncho Villa are non-coated, whereas the  Mil-Tec Ripstop Wet Weather Poncho  is PVC-impregnated).

It is rare to find backpacking rain ponchos made with classic waterproof breathable materials like membranes. This year’s list does not include any designs of that nature. However, one exception is the Vaude Hiking Backpack Poncho , which features Vaude’s proprietary waterproof breathable membrane known as ‘Ceplex Active’. This environmentally-friendly membrane, with a water column rating of 10,000 mm, is treated with PFC-free Eco Finish to enhance the waterproofing capabilities of the fabric.

Water resistance and weather protection

The two main requirements for rain ponchos are to protect the wearer from the elements and to provide enough airflow to avoid wetting from the inside. Both are supposed to help keep the wearer dry.

Unlike hardshell jackets, rain ponchos are not designed to provide the same level of wind and water protection in extremely harsh conditions. However, their purpose is different. They are intended to offer protection against light to medium rain and showers. And due to the specific design, even some cheap backpacking ponchos deliver a really impressive performance in light to medium rain. Note that the performance of your rain poncho can be dependent on fine detail. For example, there’s a difference between wearing your poncho over and beneath your backpack. Keeping your backpack beneath the rain poncho will decrease the pressure created by the pack shoulder straps (it’s the opposite when the backpack is over the poncho). This means that even a poncho (or a rainfly, umbrella, etc.) with a lower waterproof rating can still provide adequate rain protection in most situations.

The majority of models in our review are either water-resistant or rainproof, with rainproof garments typically having a water column rating of at least 3000-5000 mm. These ponchos can keep you dry for hours in light rain especially if there’s no wind. Considering the classic definition for a waterproof garment, the only design that can be called really waterproof is the  ACT FIRE Rain Poncho . According to the manufacturer, this poncho has a waterproof rating of 20 000 mm, which is highly unusual for a waterproof poncho made from unspecified material.

The use of coatings, DWR finishes, and fully taped seams enhances the fabric’s resistance to water, making it more impermeable. However, it’s important to note that the seams can be a weak point, as their failure can compromise the overall performance of the poncho construction.

High winds and heavy/driving rains can pose challenges when walking in the rain, particularly when wearing a poncho instead of a heavy-duty rain jacket. The typical poncho design prioritizes simplicity, lightness, and ventilation, offering adequate waterproof protection. However, it may not withstand punctures from rocks or tree branches. Finding a backpacking rain poncho that combines full weather protection with durability, abrasion resistance, and well-designed features is rare.

Weight and packability

Many people think that rain ponchos are extremely light. Certainly, some of the models like the  Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Nano Tarp Poncho are lightweight. But many others are not that light and PU-coating is among the main reasons for this. Moreover, the presence or absence of particular features (zippers, pockets, metal grommets, etc.), as well as the size, weave, thickness, and type of fabric, are the main factors affecting weight.

Are waterproof ponchos lightweight? Well, it depends. We’ve reviewed ponchos weighing from 200 g (7.1 oz) for the lightest Exped Pack Poncho UL to 1043 g (2 lbs 4.8 oz) for the heaviest Hazard 4 Poncho Villa . From Graph 1 , we can observe that the majority of the reviewed ponchos, including four of the top six designs, fall within the range of 230 g to 360 g (8.1 to 13 oz).

Packability is an important consideration when purchasing a rain poncho since your poncho is expected to spend lots of time at the bottom of your pack. Solid models that are compatible with a liner tend to be heavier and less compact compared to lightweight designs. The Exped Pack UL Poncho stands out as one of the most packable options. The manufacturer has designed it to fit neatly into its own stuff sack, and interestingly, the Exped Pack UL (UL is for ultralight) can even be stuffed into its own interior chest pocket.

Breathability and ventilation

Ponchos are well-known for providing excellent ventilation during outdoor activities such as hiking and mountaineering. However, the mechanism behind this ventilation differs significantly from traditional waterproof breathable garments. Note that while traditional waterproof breathable designs like rain pants and jackets rely on features like waterproof breathable fabrics, pit zips, side zippers, and ankle zippers to provide sufficient airflow and keep the wearer dry during walking in bad weather, ponchos prioritize their specific design and fit for ventilation rather than relying solely on moisture vapor permeability (breathability) ratings. Sure, while higher moisture vapor permeability is beneficial, it’s important to note that even the most breathable designs, as we highlighted in our article on the best hardshells (link available in the ‘ Related Articles ‘ section below), may not keep you entirely dry during vigorous activity with a heavy pack in severe conditions.

Why are ponchos so effective at providing ventilation and air circulation? It’s because their loose-fitting design allows for increased airflow, facilitating the release of accumulated heat from the body into the environment. Conversely, ponchos with narrow or excessively long sleeves, as well as those with hook-and-loop sleeve closures, can impede the necessary airflow required to regulate body temperature during intense activities.

Features and versatility

The waterproof poncho industry is dominated by the simplicity of style and streamlined designs. Unlike rain jackets and hardshells, rain ponchos rarely have high-tech features. Actually, they don’t need more than a handful of useful details. Here’s a list of the most popular features of rain ponchos that can be of use:

• Storage bags : most rain ponchos (except for those that are really dirt cheap) come with a storage bag or stuff sack. These bags provide a convenient way to store and protect the poncho from moisture and abrasion.

Some poncho models, like the FROGG TOGGS Ultra-Lite2 , are primarily designed for use solely as ponchos. However, other models such as the Mil-Tec Ripstop Wet Weather and One Tigris Tentsformer offer more versatility and can function as multi-purpose rain gear rather than just a basic poncho. Whether you need an emergency shelter or a rainfly, multipurpose ponchos are a good asset to have in your backpack. The downside of good, solid multifunctional ponchos is their weight.

Fit, mobility, and comfort

One of the reasons to use a rain poncho is that it won’t limit your movement while backpacking in the rain as it should be easy to move around in. If a particular poncho design restricts your movement in any way, you’d better pass on this one and look for another model that offers complete freedom of movement.

Fit is another important factor to consider when choosing a rain poncho. A well-fitting poncho enhances comfort and enables easier mobility. Ponchos usually fit most body types well but there can be exceptions. For instance, the FROGG TOGGS Ultra-Lite2 is very comfortable but tends to be oversized, making it less suitable for shorter and thinner individuals. On the other hand, the Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Nano is a light and durable poncho, but its shorter length may not be suitable for taller individuals. Additionally, some ponchos may have shorter or longer sleeves, such as the Arcturus Lightweight Waterproof Rain poncho. We don’t think that any design with either too short or too long sleeves is a good option for most situations. Of course, whether a certain design is better or not is more a matter of personal preference rather than a universal truth.

One of the most comfortable backpacking ponchos is the  Hazard 4 Poncho Villa made from a soft and durable softshell fabric. The fabric is a blend of polyester (86%) and spandex (14%), providing a great combination of comfort and functionality. Water-resistant, flexible, and airy, the fabric offers a good balance of stretch, breathability, and protection.

Many lightweight backpacking ponchos, such as the Outdoor Products Multipurpose and FROGG TOGGS Ultra-Lite2 , prioritize low weight over durability. The thin and light material works well against the rain and allows for some airflow but these models aren’t among the most durable nor the most versatile rain ponchos. Keep in mind that many lightweight poncho designs are flimsy and may not survive their first use.

The more robust and heavy-duty constructions , such as the Helikon-Tex U.S. Poncho and Mil-Tec Ripstop Wet Weather Poncho , are usually well-designed and well-made. When it comes to durability, these models, along with others of similar construction, offer increased reliability . It’s worth mentioning that certain lightweight models made from more durable fabrics like the Sea to Summit Ultra-Sil Nano (thanks to the durable Cordura fabric) have a decent chance of surviving more than a couple of trips.

One of the strongest points to opt for a poncho is the affordable price and yet the market offers a wide range of price options. Some people prefer disposable rain ponchos, which makes sense in some cases. However, we are not huge fans of ultra-cheap gear as it’s usually crap. Use-and-throw products indeed have a loyal fan base but we prefer a more efficient use of resources.

The price tags of the ponchos in our review ranged from $16.99 for the cheap Anyoo Waterproof Rain to $179.99 for the more than ten times more expensive Poncho Villa by Hazard 4. The average price of the fourteen poncho models is approximately $61, while the median price is $37. Note that the huge difference between the average and median price indicates that the prices of the most expensive styles have a huge impact on the average price. Specifically, the Hazard 4 Poncho Villa and Exped Pack UL are priced at approximately $180 and $140, respectively, while eight of the remaining 12 designs cost less than $38 each.

Is it justified to pay $100 or more for a rain poncho? Hell, no, if you’re on a tight budget. There are certainly better ways to spend a hundred bucks. However, if you can afford to spend that much on a poncho, go for it. Exped Pack UL is a great pack poncho. Lightweight and super packable, it comes in different sizes to fit people whose height ranges from 150 to 210 cm. It’s also stuffed with a ton of useful features like the waterproof chest pocket or the pack attachment loop, for instance. We recommend the Hazard 4 Poncho Villa for those who’d like to get a good combination of practical design, soft and sturdy fabric, and premium features.

The best budget option is the  FROGG TOGGS Ultra-Lite2 . Crafted from lightweight polypropylene fabric, it’s probably the best 20-dollar rain poncho on the market today. For those who are looking for a combination of good value and reasonable price, we recommend considering the Mil-Tec Ripstop Wet Weather  and Helikon-Tex U.S.  with or without a liner.

Maintenance and storage

It’s important to always follow the manufacturer’s care instructions for safe cleaning and drying of any waterproof garment, including ponchos, hardshells, or socks. Waterproof breathable clothing should be washed, dried, and stored in such a way as to prolong the useful life of the garment. Those ponchos with membrane pores that can become blocked need to be washed regularly with mild soap and water. Rinse the garment thoroughly to remove any detergent residue, dirt, and sweat that can limit breathability. For ponchos with membranes that don’t have pores, excessive washing may do more harm than good.

The storage of a rain poncho is relatively simple. You just need to follow a few instructions. Firstly, ensure that the poncho is clean and dry before storing it. Secondly, for ponchos made from waterproof breathable fabric, you can either keep it in its stuff sack or hang it on a coat hanger. Thirdly, if no recent use is expected, hang it freely on a coat hanger. This helps prevent wrinkles and potential damage to the cloth as a result of keeping the poncho in its storage bag for too long.

If at some point you need to repair a puncture, hole, tear, or any other damage on your rain poncho, you can do so using the appropriate materials. For ponchos with seam-sealed seams, you can use the seam sealer from your backpacking repair kit to fix the damage. If your rain poncho has a PU or silicone coating, you can use PU or silicone glue respectively for the repair.

Walking in the rain can be enjoyable if you’re well-prepared. While there’s plenty of information available about rain jackets and pants, the same can’t be said for rain ponchos. This lack of information has led to backpacking rain ponchos being overlooked by outdoor enthusiasts. However, there are excellent poncho models available on the market.

However, sizing proved less versatile than I expected: At 51″ x 55″, the standard size still felt small and constricting, limiting my mobility. As such, the model is not the best option for folks who often carry large backpacks (see how to choose a backpack ). Moreover, the lack of breathability and venting had me overheating rapidly, even in a 50°F drizzle.

Still, its budget-friendly price makes it a serviceable emergency shell – just don’t expect trail-ready performance on par with premium alternatives.

I liked how small it rolls for packing. However, deploying this rain poncho is a whole different story: its Velcro fasteners made the whole process more difficult instead of easier (like it was advertised). Moreover, the poncho just didn’t provide enough protection for my arms – this is not something you’ll want to wear over a hoodie. On the bright side, the expansive 95” length kept my pack covered, while the hood brim kept the rain off my face. 

Ultimately, the Foxelli stands as a worthwhile investment for infrequent users on a budget. If you’re an agility-focused athlete or a dedicated fastpacker, you’re better off upgrading to a higher-performing alternative.

After a week of thorough testing, I found that the Frogg Toggs Ultra-Lite Poncho provides the ultimate lightweight rain protection for hiking and emergency use. Though lacking durability for long-term rough use, its low price easily minimizes replacement concerns. For its weight, I felt that sizing ran small: despite side snaps that allowed me to adjust coverage, I still experienced constricted arm motion on the trail. 

However, the integrated stuff sack enabled impressive compression down to near nothing – something that I, whose storage space often runs slim, really appreciated. All in all, the Frogg Toggs Ultra-Lite Poncho brings welcome lightweight insurance against sudden storms at an affordable price, which is exactly what most rain poncho shoppers are looking for.

The poncho managed to keep me bone dry-in downpours without compromising breathability, aided by spacious coverage increasing (the much-needed) mobility.

Though not as lightweight as the model I’ve described above – the Frogg Toggs poncho – it still rolled down to roughly the size of an apple, stowing in its integrated pouch for improbable packability. I appreciated functional touches like the adjustable hood, snap side closuresm and an internal phone pocket. Still, this particular poncho may not be the best option if you’re on the shorter side – the excessive fabric drape could lead to tripping.

While the model’s durability certainly can’t be compared to purpose-specific trail shells, it is very cheap, thus removing longevity as a serious concern. Ultimately, the ultra-packable Anyoo makes a trusty companion, blocking the elements in a pinch despite limited technical chops for performance hiking.

Thanks to its polyurethane-lined knit shell, the Charles River Pacific Poncho offers genuinely fantastic rain protection. I really liked how its fabric stretched smoothly rather than rustling loudly amidst wind, as well as how its sealed seams kept me completely dry despite the downpour.  The model’s uniquely elongated silhouette, on the other hand, guarded my frame down to the knees, while an adjustable hood cinched visibility during gale-force showers.

The poncho’s streamlined button snaps added polished looks, belying the budget price tag. Thanks to its 5000mm hydrostatic head Paratex Dry ripstop shell, I was dry even in a heavy downpour – not the experience I had with cheaper models that feel almost like garbage bags. I also appreciated design touches like the expansive storm hood – which cinches securely in gales – and the hook-and-loop sealed sleeves, which do an excellent job at retaining interior warmth. 

Unfortunately, however, this rain poncho is not without drawbacks. Despite promises of backpack coverage, I still experienced spray exposure around my hip belt region during testing. Similarly, the roomy dimensions impaired my mobility on twisty trails as wet fabric stuck to my legs.

Still, the model’s emergency bivy potential brings welcome insurance when pushing alpine limits. So, while certainly not the most technical poncho out there, the Patrol Poncho offers a resilient construction that excels at protecting its wearer in truly bad weather.

Both the polyamide fabric and the sealed seams kept me dry in a heavy storm – an excellent performance which, admittedly, I did not expect. Other praiseworthy features include an integrated front pocket, adjustable hood, and a high collar. 

However, the fixed sides and the backpack panel restricted cross-ventilation – I measured accumulated interior moisture after just moderate exertion. This also limited poncho-only agility for thriftier trips. Moreover, the model’s single-piece design complicated throwing it on quickly in case of sudden showers.

Still, the backpack-boosting panel brings welcome versatility missing among normal shells. Although not the best option in terms of breathability and packless flexibility, VAUDE’s poncho still sports a unique construction that excels at shielding its wearer, making it a worthwhile purchase.

An integrated pouch compacted the bundle, while the adjustable hood kept the rain off my face.

However, I’m sure that the fixed sizing will leave taller users partially exposed – I measured accumulated moisture on my legs during a downpour. This also limited motion until I activated the Velcro sleeve poppers, which allow customized coverage. Moreover, the easily deployed tarp brought welcome versatility, something that’s often missing among normal shells.

Overall, the Helikon-Tex Poncho’s adaptable construction excels at shielding users and gear. It stands as a great choice for folks who often find themselves hiking in poor weather.

The last rain poncho on my list – Arcturus Rain Poncho – offers stellar rain protection for outdoor locomotion with its triple-layered polyurethane-coated ripstop nylon shell. During the testing period, the construction had no trouble repelling heavy downpours and denying soakthrough despite condensation contact from my perspiring backpack. I also appreciated the capacious, sweeping silhouette, which allowed me to kneel amidst soggy fields, while safeguarding my pack.

However, even though it promises emergency shelter conversion, the model’s fussy multi-configuration hampered brisk deployment as storms approached. I’m not saying that this should stop you from considering the poncho for purchase, though – it’s a genuinely cheap piece of outdoor apparel, and one that’s not meant to be used for multiple years anyway. All in all, it is the niche-focused backpackers who will benefit most from the Arcturus’ specialty design that will shield their cargo during soggy outings.

One of the 1st things I learned in the army was that ponchos are used to wrap around your weapon to keep it dry, not to keep you dry. We used ponchos for ourselves when stationary duty like guard duty. When moving we wore rain jacket and rain pants. On 5 Caminos I cariedy rain suit and TWO ponchos. Why two? One for a ground cloth and one to cover me in my sleeping bag. But I have never had to use the two ponchos yet. Perhaps next month on the Sanabres?

Arcturus is a company that creates specialized outdoor survival apparel including wool blankets, ghillie suits, and ponchos in particular. It’s a focus that seems to work because it’s managed to create high-quality, lightweight, yet durable rain gear that is very well-priced.

This poncho is available in several colors, including woodland camouflage, and it is designed to protect all of you from the rain. With a generous 48-inch length (front and back), it will easily protect all your legs past the knees for all but the tallest of people. Made of durable 210T ripstop nylon, the shell feels thin and light, and the double-layered polyurethane coatings ensure it remains waterproof.

The sides have three buttons to help close and keep out the wind and heavy rain (although some purchasers have stated that, because of this poncho’s size, strong winds can get in through the sides, so you may want to add some Velcro to cinch the sides closed a little more securely).

Frogg Toggs have practically become a synonym for “poncho” among backpackers, and for good reason. It’s waterproof, inexpensive, durable, lightweight, and folds up into a small stuff sack. It’s comfortable, too, because while the outside is made of waterproof polypropylene, the inside is covered with a soft fabric layer, so your skin doesn’t have to touch plastic. If you’re looking for a great way to protect yourself from the rain without spending a lot of cash, this is your best choice, no matter what kind of outdoor activity you have planned.

The outer shell is made of nonwoven polypropylene fabric that is waterproof and wind-resistant (which means with really hard winds, you may feel it a bit) and has waterproofed seams. With the built-in adjustable hood cord and snaps on either side of the poncho, you can tighten and conform it for a more comfortable fit. And, it’s machine-washable, which is a nice thing to have after a long slog through a rainy hike.

The one drawback for the Frogg Toggs is the somewhat short length and width. The arms are covered just past the elbows for the average person. I’m 5-foot-8, and I get coverage to about mid-forearm. That’s fine for a while, but during a long, heavy downpour, it may get to be a problem with wet forearms. Plus, if you’re carrying a backpack, you’ll probably want to pack rain cover because this won’t be able to cover it and you effectively at the same time. But overall, it’s a great poncho.

For the folks who like a military-style kit, you may want to take a look at USGI Industries’ Military Style Poncho. Now, it’s not exactly like a military-issued poncho, as it’s lighter and not as thick. However, the 210T ripstop polyester is respectably tough, and the lightweight (18 ounces) and small size when packed in the carry bag (6 x 8 x 3 inches) makes this a great addition to an emergency bag or as part of your backpacking kit. Plus, USGI Industries is a disabled veteran-owned company, so that’s pretty cool.

The generous size of the Military Style Poncho provides plenty of protection for the arms and down the legs. Plus, the heavy-duty copper grommets on the sides give you the option of using it as a tarp tent or a rain fly, or it can be combined with a woobie-style liner that you can purchase separately (or use a military-issued liner, which reportedly fits nicely) to provide extra warmth or use as a sleeping bag/blanket.

Despite the high-quality build, USGI Industries product page states the poncho has a 3,000mm water resistance rating. Savvy buyers of the outdoor kit may recognize that “water resistance” is not the same as “waterproof.” That does not mean this poncho won’t protect you from rain, but it certainly will for most users. However, its ability to provide long-term protection over prolonged rain may be questionable.

Serious hikers plan for any number of contingencies, including getting caught out in the middle of nowhere during a surprise downpour. And while any waterproof poncho is better than nothing, some are better designed if you plan to keep moving in the rain.

The Snugpak Patrol Poncho was designed to provide you and your gear with protection while minimizing any impact on your ability to move around. Made of its own Paratex Dry fabric, it’s waterproof, including the seams, and has dedicated sleeves (most ponchos simply drape over the arms). It also has room to cover your backpack, ensuring your gear stays dry. Plus (and this is a really nice feature), there’s a Velcro map pocket on the front of the chest, which lets you keep your map dry and easily accessible.

The Hagon PRO Disposable Rain Poncho is a poncho in its most elementary form. It’s essentially a plastic sheet that has been modified to provide protection against the rain, and that’s it. It’s designed for the person who has absolutely no need for their rain gear other than to be on hand when required. And for all this, the Hagon PRO is perfect.

Made from 0.035mm thick PE plastic, this shell is waterproof, light, and transparent — although there are actually a couple of color options if you like. Even though it’s essentially a plastic sheet, there are a couple of nice design elements. It has a well-designed hood that won’t collapse around your face (some ponchos with larger hoods can get in the way of your vision). It also features closed sides beneath the arm slots, which is great since the wind won’t be able to expose you with a sudden gust.

Of course, there are limitations to this kind of rain shell. Being disposable, they’re not intended to last very long (although you can probably get a few uses out of one). Plus, the 40-inch width only gives your arms partial coverage, so they’ll get wet. But for the price (you get five of these ponchos for $12.99 from Amazon), these ponchos are a perfect addition to an emergency bag or for a little insurance against the rain when working outside.

Lightweight and small in its stuff sack (only 3 x 5.25 inches), you can stow it anywhere, and if you’re carrying it in a pack, you’ll hardly notice the extra eight ounces of weight. When you inevitably need it, you can’t ask for a more versatile shell to protect you against the rain.

This S2S poncho is made with 15D ultra-sil nano fabric, which is a “siliconized nylon fabric with a polyurethane (PU) inner coating” according to its Amazon product page. This provides solid water resistance for you as a poncho while on the move, or as a rainfly or tarp tent if needed for a shelter. Some backpackers will use this as their rainfly since it’s so light and can be used in a variety of ways. It’s large enough to protect you and your backpack, but also has a clever “drawcord tail” that allows the wearer to raise the hem if you don’t have a pack.

The biggest drawback of this well-made poncho is the cost. Some serious minimalist backpackers combine this with a bug tent like this one, so as to have more of a complete system that has multiple uses.

For those willing to pay the price, Zpacks’ Groundsheet Poncho provides excellent rain protection as well as heavy-duty utility as a groundsheet or pack cover, all at an astonishingly low weight of just under six ounces. For the ultralight enthusiast, there’s simply no better choice for protection against the rain.

Zpacks’ poncho gets its light, total waterproof protection and durability by using Dyneema, an “ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (HMPE) fiber,” that is so tough, it is often used in high-end tent floors. And with a rating of 20,000mm water resistance, it’s capable of keeping you dry through the harshest of rain. Like the previously discussed Sea to Summit Poncho, ultralight enthusiasts can combine this with Zpacks tents for a total lightweight sleeping system (but hoo-boy, it’ll cost you).

There are a couple of shortcomings to note, however, considering the high price. First, the poncho width is only 52 inches, which provides mid-arm coverage. Many ponchos are designed this way, as many people (backpackers in particular) find longer arm coverage cumbersome, especially in high winds. Also, the length doesn’t adequately cover larger backpacks, so if you’re hauling anything larger than 35 liters, you may want to look into getting rain pants or a rain kilt.

The Arcturus Lightweight Ripstop Nylon Rain Poncho brings the best of all worlds together into a single product, and can fill almost any role needed at a reasonable price. But if you don’t really need the multifunctionality of the Arcturus or similar rain shells, then the Frogg Toggs Ultra Lite2 is almost certainly the way to go.

What to consider when buying a rain poncho

As with most outdoor kits, you really want to consider what you need your poncho to be capable of before you purchase it. If all you need is protection from rain while outside, like at a sports event or doing labor, then you can safely buy a lower-end poncho that leaves out things like adjustable waists, snap buttons, reinforced grommets, and the like that make the poncho a more versatile tool. If you need something more durable but don’t plan on carrying large backpacks, then well-made but functionally simple ponchos like the Frogg Toggs Ultra Lite2 will suit you well. It’s when you want to be able to get more out of your rain gear, like the ability to use it for a shelter, that you’ll want to do more research to ensure you get what you pay for.

Types of rain poncho

A disposable rain poncho is essentially a sheet of waterproof material with a hood. It’s functional and provides ample protection, but isn’t designed to do much else. You can get a few uses out of these, which may be all you need, but eventually, it’ll tear as it’s not made to last.

Like the disposable poncho, these ponchos are water-resistant or waterproof shells that you wear when needed. The arms are usually covered mid-way to provide ease of movement, and most will have buttons to allow you to close the sides somewhat to protect you from the wind.  That’s pretty much it. These are durable enough to last you a while, but if you tend to wear them under a backpack, then they may wear through over time.

Multi-functional

These are rain shells that have been designed to take advantage of having a large sheet of waterproof material while you’re in remote areas. These are typically either made of thicker material or exotic lightweight material like Dyneema, that will protect from wind and rain but can be stretched underneath you or over you as a tarp tent. These will typically have reinforced grommets that will support trekking poles or 550 cord so you can set up your shelter. 

Key features of a rain poncho

Waterproofing.

All rain ponchos afford some level of protection from precipitation, but not all are great for prolonged periods of heavy downpours. If it’s not waterproof rated, make sure it’s at least water-resistant to 1,200mm or higher. There is no industry standard of what is considered “waterproof” but fabrics with over 1,000mm of resistance start to provide a decent level of rain protection, and the higher you go, the more protection you’ll get. 

Size  

Most people don’t like to dress up like a cheap plastic Jedi, so the poncho is designed to look like it does for a reason. The length and width are geared to cover you at a minimum. But many are made with extra length in order to cover backpacks as well. If you’re not planning on hiking or carrying gear (and you’re not super tall), then something under 80 inches total length (40 inches on one side) is fine. But if you need more material to cover your pack, look for something over 80 inches. 

Drawstrings and buttons

The most basic of ponchos won’t have these, and you may not know what you’re missing. However, hood and waist drawstrings and side buttons are a great way to keep control of all the poncho in inclement weather, particularly when it’s windy outside. By using these, you can adjust the amount of material you have flapping in the wind, and make the use of the poncho a bit more comfortable.

The good news is that there are a large variety of waterproof ponchos that do a great job protecting you from rain that don’t cost a lot of money. But like any outdoor gear, there is higher-quality, and in some cases exotic, materials that can push the price up pretty quickly.  Lower-priced ponchos tend to be made of simple PE plastics or polyester, and you can expect to pay below $20 (much lower if you buy something disposable). As you go higher in price, up to the $60 range, materials are more durable, like ripstop woven fabrics, that allow the poncho to endure more rigorous use. Once you pass $60, you’ll likely be in the more exotic range, where ultralight designs and materials are often part of a tent or hammock system.

In Summary:  In 2019 I again researched lightweight waterproof ponchos and I choose the  Charles River Pacific  as the best waterproof poncho to pack in your carry on.

While there are more effective ponchos on the market I found the Charles River was the best travel poncho for carry-on guys like me.

It won   because:

• It’s just the right weight
• It keeps you and your backpack dry
• It’s available in colors other than green!

Much of the poncho market is dominated by survivalists and military types which is a pity because they are a great item to include in your carryon packing list. I wish more travel companies made ponchos and there were more fashionable waterproof poncho options.

Versatility is the key to great travel clothes and a hooded rain poncho is a very useful and versatile item to have in your bag.

Introduction: What’s So Good About A Travel Poncho?

Smart travelers are always trying to shave weight off their bag and a waterproof rain poncho is one way to do that.

A sweater + rainproof poncho is more versatile than a bulky rain jacket because you can wear your sweater or your poncho separately.

Versatility and layers are the keys to reducing the weight of your bag.

I like ponchos even compared to sleeved lightweight windbreakers (or cagoules as the British call them) because a poncho is easy to get on in a hurry.

If you get caught in a rain shower it’s easy to whip a poncho out of your day pack and be protected from the rain in just seconds.

Likewise,  a woolen poncho  (like Clint might wear) is also a very versatile item to pack.

If you are a poncho fan I’d recommend packing both a woolen poncho and a waterproof poncho in your carry on.

A good rain poncho can offer some protection to your lower half as well as keeping your top half dry…

And the best rain ponchos will even cover a backpack ​so your things don’t get wet.

Some Ponchos can come down below the knee so you can even sit down on a wet bench if you want.

All in all… a rain poncho is a really handy thing for a traveler, hiker or backpacker to carry.

Large waterproof rain ponchos:

But on the down-side:

How To Choose A Rain Poncho?

It’s easier to buy a rain poncho online than a rain jacket because you don’t need to be so accurate with sizing. Generally, ponchos have a “one size fits all” approach.

A poncho is usually something you don’t wear for long periods of time. They don’t breathe well and can make you sweat. Keep this in mind before you spend big on something that you rarely wear for more than 10 minutes at a time.

Rain Poncho vs Umbrella

The poncho really competes more with the umbrella than the rain jacket. A rain poncho is like an umbrella that you wear. It frees up your hands which is great if you need them for some other purpose. And it won’t blow away in the wind or get broken and stop opening.

They can often pack smaller than an umbrella too and work better against the irritating rain that refuses to fall straight down and comes at you sideways.

On the other hand, you have at least a chance of keeping the rain off your face with an umbrella but your face will still get wet with a poncho, unless you get a big one and hide underneath it!

If it’s windy rain ponchos can get caught in the wind and fly up. This can be doubly annoying. First because despite putting the poncho on you are getting wet. Second because it can fly up and slap you in the face. Your wet soggy, grumpy face. If you do go down the poncho route and you anticipate using it in windy conditions make sure to get one with snap closures under the arms. This will help to prevent the poncho from catching the wind and beating you around the face. Also look for one with a drawstring to tighten the poncho around your face. This will stop the water getting inside and running down your neck.

Terra Hiker Rain Poncho Review

The Terra Hiker comes in four different colors: army green, blue, dark blue, and orange.

Be careful with the dark blue variety because the photo clearly does not look dark blue. Some people have bought this option and not been happy with the color.

It weighs about 11 oz which means it’s fairly packable, it’s not going to take up a huge amount of room in your backpack or carryon.

The poncho is a 86.6″ x 57″ rectangle when it’s unfolded. It uses velcro straps to close the sides.

Charles River Apparel Pacific Poncho Review

The  Charles River Pacific Poncho  is a hugely popular waterproof poncho and with good reason.

It comes in 14 different colors and with a great little storage pouch. The pouch is roughly 12 x 9.5 x 0.5 inches, it weighs about 1 lb and the whole thing takes up less than a liter of space in your bag.

It’s long enough to cover your knees when seated even if you are tall. You could easily stuff this poncho into your handbag in case of emergencies.

If your have a backpack and it’s not too big this poncho will also cover your backpack to protect your things and keep them dry.

It comes with a hood with drawstrings for keeping your head dry.​

The Charles River is lightweight but it’s not so lightweight that it’s like those disposable plastic ponchos. It’s designed to last for a long time.​

Frogg Toggs Outer Ware Poncho Review

The  Frogg Toggs poncho  is a lighter option than the Charles River but again it’s not meant to be disposable.

The Frogg Toggs is modestly priced but it’s a step up from disposable ponchos.

For carry-on travelers, the fact that it’s very lightweight is an added bonus. It’s only going to add 8.8 oz to your carry on weight.

If you are going to a mild climate you can skip taking a jacket altogether but keep a lightweight poncho handy just in case of any sudden downpours.​

• The material is thin and could be pierced easily

Snugpak Patrol Poncho Review

The  Snugpak Patrol Poncho  is a great option for larger guys and even fits guys up to 300 lbs.

The truth is though… this isn’t really a poncho because it’s got sleeves. It’s more like a big cagoule but that’s no bad thing.

The main negative is that it’s a little overpriced for what it is. The Charles River is better value at a better price.​

On The Plus Side:

• It can be compressed really small
• A great plus size rain poncho option

But…

• No waist cord
• Can’t be opened up and used as a sheet
• Short in the arms for tall people

Mil-Tec Poncho Review

The  Mil-Tec  is made in Germany and made to a higher standard than Chinese ponchos.

Mil-tec makes military=style poncho rain gear and to military-grade. I guess Mil-Tec is short for Military Technology.

What this means for the casual carry on traveler is that it’s not very stylish but it really gets the job done!

If you travel with expensive laptops or camera gear then this will slip over your backpack and keep your gear safe.

It ships from Ireland so it’s going to take some time to get to you but it will probably be worth the wait.​

The reasons this poncho didn’t win my top pick was because it only comes in military green and for a carry-on only traveler obsessed with weight it’s 7.5 oz heavier than the Charles River Pacific.

But if that doesn’t bother you this might be the one to get.​

For “best poncho” it’s the winner but for “best travel poncho” it runs second place.

JTENG Poncho Review

The ghostly looking  JTENG Poncho  is another military style poncho available in camouflage or green.

Sadly this is probably too heavy to be a useful carry on poncho. It’s 1.8 lbs and for me that’s getting to the stage where the fantastic benefits of a travel poncho are out weighed by the negative effects of the weight.

The JTENG is a great poncho and highly rated but for carry on travelers isn’t not the one to go for.

That and the fact that their marketing might give me nightmares!​

Ultralight Poncho – The Emergency Rain Poncho Or Festival Poncho

These Kasu Water Ponchos are a hooded rain poncho designed to help with sudden downpours that you might encounter where you don’t want to be carrying a full jacket.

While you might call this a disposable poncho they are actually designed to be used more than once. They are made with thick premium polyethylene that won’t tear if you are careful with it. If it does tear… well it was very cheap and you get 5 of these reusable rain ponchos in the pack.

It’s a full body poncho but it’s extremely light-weight so it suits those that like to pack and travel light. They are small so they are easily stuffed in a handbag or even a pocket and if you encounter an unexpected downpour you’ll be glad to have it with you.

You can buy the translucent version so that people can still whatever stylish outfit you are wearing underneath. So could these see-through rain capes be considered the most fashionable rain poncho choice? I’ll leave that to the fashion experts to decide.

On the downside, it’s not a thick rain poncho and it’s not going to do anything to help keep you warm like a fleece-lined rain poncho would.

If you want to travel light perhaps one of these as well as a sweater might replace taking a heavy raincoat. Of course, it depends on where in the world you are headed.

Do You Agree That Ponchos Rock For Travelers?

That’s it for our take on the best rain ponchos with our usual travel orientated twist.

Yes, it’s true, a stylish rain poncho is rarer than a unicorn sitting on top of a flying pig. Nike did dabble in ponchos but they were not waterproof ponchos. But don’t be put off by the quasi-military styling, marketing, and survivalist vibe.

Ponchos are still really awesome for travelers I promise and there are a few cool ponchos out there.

The reality is that you probably won’t need to wear these very often and if you do you will be so glad to have it you won’t care about fashion and how you look!

However, while the Nano is big enough to cover you and a backpack, you’ll be lucky to fit the Onewind poncho over yourself and a tiny rucksack. But hey, it’s not like every poncho needs to be backpack friendly, especially since many of you probably won’t even be using it for that purpose. The material itself is incredibly waterproof and should have no trouble standing up against several hours of torrential rain. Of course, I also like how you can transform it into a makeshift shelter, and you could probably get away with using it as a groundsheet as well. When you consider that all of those features come in such a budget friendly package, what’s not to like? Well, a couple of things. Rain ponchos are also a lot more packable and portable than your typical rain jacket. As we’ve mentioned, a breathable poncho is going to help keep your skin dry, unlike a completely waterproof poncho which will make your skin sticky with sweat. But beyond that, you have to consider the fit of your poncho as well. Usually this isn’t a problem, as they all pretty much come oversized, so you can fit you backpack underneath as well. However, some do come with a much more fitted style, so you’ll have to be careful when shopping for one of these. A good rain poncho should also have a spacious hood that not only keeps your head dry but allows you to see clearly as well. Look for options with adjustable hoods, whether they have drawstrings or brims, so you can keep the rain away from your face without compromising on comfort. Trust me, there’s nothing worse than a hood that blocks your vision and makes you stumble around like a blindfolded wanderer.
