Though days may start to become shorter and cooler as you approach winter, it’s worth visiting for cheaper accommodation and flights!

Switzerland in September  

If you’re dreaming of exploring Swiss cities, taking picturesque train rides, and sightseeing some of the world’s most renowned tourist attractions – then planning a journey to Switzerland in September is an ideal choice. 

With fewer tourists you can walk the Old Towns with ease, book organized excursions without difficulty, and locate cost-effective lodging options – all while enjoying lovely weather conditions.

Places like Jungfrau, Interlaken, Geneva, Zurich, Lugano, and Lucerne are usually very busy in the summer months, so come autumn it is much calmer for sightseeing. 

This is also a great time to participate in colorful festivals in September in Switzerland. Popular events include wine fests and harvest festivals. 

One of the popular harvest festivals is called “Sichlete”. It is held in Bern, and at this event, farmers bring their cows, sheep, horses and more to the square in front of the federal building in Bern, and one lucky winner gets the crown!

Switzerland in October

October is a stunning time of year to witness the vivid hues of fall foliage, as well as take part in breathtaking hikes and bask in picturesque lake views. 

When visiting Switzerland in October, you can spend your days exploring the stunning Swiss Alps or take a leisurely stroll along the cobblestone streets of medieval towns. 

Later in the month, the weather does get a little unpredictable as the temperatures drop. It is also possible that popular cable cars, funiculars, and cogwheel trains may either be closed or not operational for a week or two because of maintenance. 

The high-altitude pass roads will start closing by October. 

If you wish to go on hikes, swimming, etc. we recommend avoiding October. As a city and culture lover, you can enjoy museums, spas, chocolate factory tours, etc., and also score a discount on transportation. 

Switzerland in November

November is definitely knocking on the winter doors. Temperatures are cooler, and in some places, snow is making an appearance. 

But the good news is that – you can still enjoy indoor activities, get some early Christmas shopping done, and more! 

As temperatures are cooler, remember to pack warm clothing. And cheer up indoors as November can be a little dull and lacking sunshine outside! November is not the best time to visit for outdoor activities. 

In November, however, you can score good flights and accommodation deals. 

Note that there is a low possibility of skiing in November.

We recommend visiting in September for sightseeing and riding scenic trains. In late October and November, it is usually raining and colder. 

Start off sightseeing with scenic cable car rides up Harder Kulm for breathtaking views of Interlaken. Afterward, take a stroll around town and explore its many attractions such as the Schadau castle and the Höhematte Park.

When the weather is nice, make sure to spend some time outdoors! Take a scenic boat ride on Lake Brienz and admire its stunning alpine backdrop. Boat cruises operate on a full schedule in September and October, with reduced hours in November.

5. Zermatt in the fall

Zermatt is an idyllic car-free village located in the Swiss Alps and is one of the most popular destinations for fall season travels! With its stunning views, quaint mountain lanes, and a variety of outdoor activities – it’s no wonder why so many people flock to Zermatt during the fall.

One of the best reasons to visit Zermatt is that accommodation is really affordable in the later days of September and October. Come November the weather is almost winter-like and is beautiful! 

Soak in the views of the Matterhorn from Zermatt (via the Matterhorn Glacier Paradise). In Zermatt, you can enjoy walks and short hikes in the quaint village, and later go for shopping! 

For outdoor adventure seekers, Zermatt is home to some of the best ski slopes in Switzerland, which you must visit in the winter. 

6. Geneva in the fall

The beautiful city of Geneva is a great destination and is home to many parks, museums, and attractions. 

In the early months of the fall, you can comfortably take a stroll through the Old Town Center. You can explore some of its iconic monuments such as St. Pierre Cathedral, and Place Neuve Square. 

Be sure to sample some of Geneva’s local cuisine at one of its many restaurants or cafes. 

When it gets colder outside, visit the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Museum for a unique perspective on international humanitarian law.

In Biel, explore its Old Town area. Take a stroll around Lake Biel and enjoy amazing views of the surrounding mountains or head to nearby forests for a leisurely hike.

8. Vaud region in the fall

During fall, the vineyards of Lavaux located between Lausanne and Montreux will dazzle you with a fiery display of gold.

9. Upper Valais region for fall

Nestled in the breathtaking Valais Alps, lies Riederalp – a picturesque car-free village. Here you can marvel at some of Switzerland’s grandest natural wonders including Europe’s largest glacier: the Aletsch Glacier! 

The area of Aletsch Forest Preserve has a lot of hiking trails where you can see the warm orange tones of larch trees and other fall colors in Switzerland. 

The upper Valais region is in the eastern German speaking part of Switzerland.

The fall season is the perfect time to take in the spectacular views of Switzerland via train! Most of the popular scenic train rides are operating in fall, and it doesn’t matter if it rains or shines, you don’t have to worry about it!

One of the most iconic train rides is the Bernina Express from Chur or St. Moritz to Tirano, Italy. Witness the majestic beauty of Swiss Alpine landscapes as you pass over viaducts and through picturesque mountain villages in this four-hour ride.

Day 2: More sightseeing in Zurich, and then start for Basel in the evening

Switzerland Fall Travel Tips

Although we loved Switzerland in the fall, many consider summer as the best time to visit as the weather is warm. But early fall still presents itself with good weather. With all attractions being open it is a good time to visit Switzerland.  You can surely save money when visiting in the fall as most of the crowds would have disappeared, and enjoy pleasant weather.

Yes, Switzerland experiences the fall foliage season during the autumn season, particularly from late September to October.  For the best chances of chasing fall colors, plan a trip around early to mid-October for most Swiss cities and mountain towns. In the Jura region, bright fall colors can be enjoyed until the end of October.

Valais, the Ticino mountain valleys, and Graubünden are said to have the best fall colors.

Switzerland definitely looks beautiful in pretty fall colors. However keep in mind that September and November in Switzerland can be a little tricky as they are transition months (summer to fall, and fall to winter). So there are chances of rain and cooler temperatures in the fall.  Late September and October can be sunny and also beautiful with fall colors. This is the time to embark on hikes and enjoy train rides before they close for the winter season.

If you love to hike, plan to visit Switzerland in October, and hit the following places for enjoying nature  – Interlaken & Bernese Oberland – Valais – Aargau & Jura – Engadin St Moritz – Zermatt – Jungfrau Region

In autumn, the weather fluctuates between 8 to 15° degrees Celsius (46 – 59 ° Fahrenheit) depending on altitude. Temperature is on the cooler side with possible rain showers as well.  Pack a sweater, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, and sunglasses with an umbrella or light raincoat just in case; you’ll thank yourself later!

Expect 80 mm of rainfall in Switzerland in September. Places like Geneva and La Chaux-de-Fonds experience 8 to 10 days of rain.

It depends on the location. In lower altitudes, expect lush greenery and a beautiful array of blooming flowers in Switzerland, with some trees already beginning to turn their leaves.  Higher up, there will still be plenty of green foliage but more noticeably autumnal hues as the trees near completion of their transformation or have since shed their leaves entirely.

When the summer hiking season starts in the Swiss mountains, from mid-June to early July, this is the time when flowers are evident and they appear everywhere. Wildflowers last through from mid June to early September only.

October in Switzerland is typically a season of transition, with temperatures ranging from pleasantly mild to wet and overcast. While mountain regions could be quite chilly this time of year, the weather at lower elevations remains relatively temperate.

During an average October day in Geneva, temperatures vary from a pleasantly cool high of 15°C (60°F) to a somewhat chilly low of 6°C (43°F). A mild humidity makes the atmosphere pleasant.

Both September and October are great for experiencing the fall season. We personally enjoyed mid-October for autumn colors, fests, and beautiful weather for walks and sightseeing outside! 

Early October is a great autumn month for hiking and sightseeing with mild weather and fewer crowds. Perfect to take in fall colors and enjoy discounts on accommodation.

January is the cheapest month to fly to Switzerland. But you can visit in late October and November for a great deal on flights and accommodation.

During the summer months of June and July, the mountain landscape is at its most beautiful. The weather could not be more perfect – mild temperatures that are rarely too hot, days filled with dry sunshine giving you breathtaking views across summits as far as your eye can see.

Planning a trip to Switzerland can be an exciting and rewarding experience. Here are some important tips for planning your Swiss getaway:

Switzerland tourist visa:

Switzerland follows the Schengen agreement, and if your passport is not visa-exempt then you will require to get a Schengen visa prior to traveling to the country. 

Passport holders from the United States and Canada do not need a visa to enter Switzerland and stay up to 90 days. 

Entering Switzerland and commuting internally: 

Zurich International Airport is the best place to fly into. You can fly direct from many cities in the USA and Canada to Zurich. 

From here you can either rent a car or take the train to the city centre. 

If you are planning on visiting multiple cities then take advantage of the Swiss travel pass and enjoy free rides on the public transportation system (trains, trams, boats, and some scenic rides).

When the days start to get shorter, and temperatures drop, autumn in Switzerland surely can’t be very far off.

If you were to ask 99 Swiss about their favorite season in Switzerland, you would realize that autumn ranks behind spring and summer on the popularity scale. But if you ask this author, what's more magical than hiking through golden pines on a sunny autumn day?

Autumn hides Switzerland’s true gold.

When Indian summer takes hold in the Engadine, when the vineyards of Lavaux turn golden, and the apple harvest is in full swing, I love to go outdoors as much as possible before that first snowfall. This is the time when it pays to go for extended walks in the forest, visit little towns on a Saturday morning, or stop by a winery for an apéro.

Autumn in Switzerland is a time of abundance on so many levels: from agriculture to culinary and from nature to customs. Here is our ultimate guide to autumn in Switzerland - the golden season.

When is autumn in Switzerland?

The official dates and months for autumn are:

And when is the best time to visit Switzerland in autumn?

September marks the entry of autumn, yet there are still 12 to 13 hours of daylight. In the flatlands, temperatures in September can reach nearly 20 degrees Celsius on nice days. In the mountains, you will find ideal temperatures for hiking, averaging 11 to 12 degrees Celsius.

By the end of October, daylight hours in Switzerland have decreased to 10 hours and temperatures turn noticeably chilly. The temperature in places like Zürich or Bern averages 10 degrees Celsius, but Ticino offers warmer days at 12 to 16 degrees Celsius.

On the last Sunday in October, daylight savings time ends. The later in November you visit, the further south you will need to venture to find comfortable temperatures.

But frankly speaking, November is not an opportune time to visit Switzerland. The weather is unpredictable, there may be weeks of heavy fog, and all the fun events and customs are over.

A piece of advice for autumn seekers: wear layers of clothing. While days may be warm and sundrenched, temperatures tend to drop by sunset. Before you know it, you will be freezing unless you packed a down jacket...

Alpine descent of sheep in leukerbad.

You may have seen that iconic photograph of sheep negotiating a narrow zig-zag path in Switzerland… This ritual happens once a year in September when the farmers of Leuk bring down their sheep from the alpine meadows.

To witness the descent of the sheep, which takes place on a Sunday, make Leukerbad your vantage point. Some 800 sheep are gathered at Gemmi a day before the main event. The day after, on Sunday, the flock makes their way down the steep rock face to Leukerbad - a 1700-meter descent. An alternative sheep descent is Schäful at Belalp.

Chästeilet cheese festival on Mäglisalp

After producing cheese all summer, the local farmers will gather at Mäglisalp for the Chästeilet - a “cheese sharing” event. Each local dairyman and woman stakeholder will receive their fair share of the summer’s cheese during this must-see ritual. Luckily, onlookers can get a share, too - in exchange for Swiss francs.

Farmer horse races in Schwarzenburg

The annual farmer horse races are so popular that the audience will show up in drones regardless of the weather. The stars of the day are working horses that would normally pull carriages or help with logging. On race day, various horse breeds await various challenges: harness races, costumed races, and even a Roman chariot event.

Raclette Festival in Le Châble

It would not be the Valais without a festival dedicated to raclette. For one weekend every September, the village of Le Châble hosts the ultimate cheese-lover event: Bagnes Capitale de la Raclette.

What all the raclette variations on the menu have in common is that they feature melted cheese. Once a poor man’s food, this festival is special in featuring various local cheese varieties. And if you time your visit just right, stop by an open wine cellar to wash down all that cheese...

Trust me when I say an entertaining autumn tradition is the cow races at Flumserberg! (I have tried riding a cow there myself…) Since cows are stubborn by nature, fun is guaranteed as the riders try to maneuver their bovine partners across the finish line at Alp Tannenboden…

During this day-long event starting at 10 AM, there is also an alpine cheese market where local dairy farmers hawk their summer’s production.

Cow beauty contests in the Appenzell region

While cattle shows are omnipresent in Switzerland, the Appenzell region is known for the most decorative ones. At the beginning of October, once their cows have returned from the alpine meadows, several places hold cattle shows, such as Appenzell (the town) or Heiden.

These events showcase local culture more than they are showcasing the cows. People of all ages wearing their traditional outfits will congregate to socialize and yodel.

Autumn and Cowbell Fair in Romainmôtier

In mid-October, those interested in bells meet in the town of Romainmôtier, Vaud. The autumn and cowbell fair is an attraction for bell collectors and foodies. While some producers are hawking bells of all sizes, others serve delicious regional specialties.

Olma Fair in St. Gallen

What do you see when you picture Switzerland ? Rolling green meadows, peppered with timber farm buildings? Cosmopolitan cities? Switzerland is known for its dramatic mountainous scenery, but you don’t have to be up high to fall for its charms. You only need to step off the plane, or coach. As Pascal says: “What I love most about Switzerland are all the things you get to see on a daily basis: our nature, people, convenience, quality of life, public transportation system and four language regions.”

Witness an alpine descent.

Known variously as Alpabzug, Désalpe or S-chargiada, the Alpine Descent is one of the most quintessentially Swiss events in the seasonal calendar. Every fall, around 400,000 dairy cattle (and 200,000 sheep) descend from ‘Alpen’, the lush, high-altitude pastures that give the Alps their name.

Dressed in crowns of bright flowers, seasonal garlands, and large bronze bells, it’s a bovine fashion parade that rattles the shutters of chalets as it rumbles past. These descents take place all over Switzerland, but the cantons of Valais, Jura and Fribourg are particular hotspots for catching a glimpse of this extraordinary event.

Autumn can be a very nice time to visit Switzerland, with lots of beautiful fall colors. But it’s important to check what’s open and be flexible with your plans if bad weather moves in. Here are some tips to help with your trip planning: when to visit, where to see the best fall colors, what’s open, and indoor activities.

Autumn season in Switzerland is from September to November.

September is an excellent month for hiking, with mild weather and most mountain resorts open. It’s a beautiful time, but you won’t see as many wildflowers, waterfalls start to dry up, and the green meadows turn yellow. 

In October, the weather gets cooler and you’ll experience more rain and often snow at high elevations. You’ll need to check the trail status and opening times carefully. The best fall foliage is typically the second & third week of October. 

By November, most mountain resorts are closed and the leaves have fallen. Weather is unpredictable and the days are short. This is not a good time to visit.

From late August to late September, most tourists are gone and Swiss kids are back in school. So that is a great time to travel to Switzerland.

However,  Swiss schools have fall breaks for 1-2 weeks between end of September and mid-October ( see schedule by canton ). Prices can be higher during these school holidays and some mountain resorts can get busy during this time.

For example, we did a day trip to Lenzerheide during the fall break and tried to rent a mountain bike. But every bike had already been reserved for weeks by families spending their autumn holiday in this popular mountain biking resort.

Most mountain resorts in Switzerland stay open through mid-October.

However, some mountains change to a limited schedule after summer holidays, open on weekends and school breaks. In addition, some high elevation resorts, like Zermatt and many in the Valais region, close earlier, starting in late September. So it’s very important to check the operating times carefully before making plans.

When mountain resorts close, this means the gondolas, restaurants, hotels, amusements (coasters, scooters) and other services are closed. Also, trails are no longer maintained and monitored for safety. Many people will still hike in these areas. They will just have to hike up the mountain and judge the trail safety themselves.

Note: If we get warm weather in late October and early November, some mountains may re-open on weekends if the weather is nice.

Some popular tourist destinations like Pilatus, Gornergrat, and Jungfraujoch stay open year round. That means you can ride up the cable cars and mountain trains to enjoy the views. But don’t expect to hike in November as the trails are often covered in snow. 

But some of these have a short maintenance break for 1-2 weeks in November. So definitely check carefully for any schedule maintenance breaks before making plans.

Appenzell District

Jungfrau region.

Interlaken's unique location between two lakes – Lake Brienz and Lake Thun – makes it a breathtaking spot for a vacation. Here, you can spend hours hiking or biking various trails, taking in the castle-studded shores of Lake Thun on a boat cruise or gazing at the surrounding mountains from the Harder Kulm observation deck (accessible via a funicular). To see more of the region's stunning scenery, go for a ride on the Schynige Platte Railway or sign up for a paragliding or skydiving excursion.

Picturesque Lucerne sits on Lake Lucerne in central Switzerland, framed by snowcapped mountains and medieval buildings. Novice and expert skiers and snowboarders can spend the bulk of their vacation hitting the slopes, which showcase incredible mountain views. After shredding powder, visitors can ride the Gornergrat train, pick up a slab of homemade chocolate from a local shop or savor cheese fondue at a traditional Swiss restaurant.

Zurich is a cosmopolitan financial center, a foodie haven and a romantic European city that appeals to all types of travelers. A vacation here should include spending time admiring Lake Zurich, exploring the trendy bars and Michelin-starred restaurants, meandering through Lindenhof park and exploring the city's distinct neighborhoods. Those with expensive taste can join well-heeled shoppers (or just admire the window displays) on Bahnhofstrasse, a world-famous exclusive retail boulevard. While here, be sure to splurge on the famous dark chocolate Champagne truffles from specialty chocolatier Teuscher.

Set along the banks of crystal-clear Lake Geneva in western Switzerland, this city is known for its incredible views and as the headquarters of the Red Cross and the United Nations. Geneva is also home to some iconic sights, including the Jet d'Eau (one of the world's tallest water fountains) and an old town with cobblestone streets and picturesque squares. While exploring the latter, be sure to check out the Saint Pierre Cathedral, which features Roman, Gothic and neoclassical details.

This lakefront city on the Swiss-Italian border offers visitors a unique travel experience. Because Lugano shares waters with neighboring Italy, the city features a mix of Swiss and Mediterranean influences in everything from its cuisine to its architecture. Plus, Lugano boasts unforgettable panoramas. Visit Monte San Salvatore and Monte Brè, both of which you can reach by funicular, for bird's-eye views of Lake Lugano and the city. Or, spend a few hours hiking the Olive Grove Trail or strolling the gardens of Ciani Park. If you'd rather lounge on a beach, head to Lido di Lugano.

The capital of Switzerland, Bern sometimes gets overlooked for flashier Swiss cities like Zurich and Geneva. But Bern holds many charms, including an Old City (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) featuring the iconic Zytglogge clock tower, Renaissance-style fountains and the tallest cathedral in Switzerland. The city also boasts many museums – several dedicated to Albert Einstein, who lived in Bern when developing his theory of relativity. Head to Gurten mountain – which you can reach by funicular, by bike or on foot – for sweeping views of the city below.

You'd be hard-pressed to find a small town that boasts more charm and incredible scenery than Brienz. Located in the stunning Bernese Oberland region, Brienz sits on the northeastern shore of Lake Brienz, which features gorgeous turquoise water and is flanked by towering mountains. Some of the best ways to soak up the awe-inspiring setting include strolling picture-perfect Brunngasse (often proclaimed the most beautiful street in Europe), riding the Brienz Rothorn Bahn (which traverses a steam rack railway) and taking a boat tour to lake attractions like Giessbach Falls.

Appenzell captures the essence of Switzerland with rolling hills, a car-free village and well-preserved customs. Visitors can take in the scenic landscape of the Appenzell District (located in the northeastern part of the country) by taking a cable car to the oft-photographed Aescher guest house, picturesquely built into the rock face. Outdoor enthusiasts will also love hiking the region's "experience trails" like the Gonten Barefoot Trail and the Appenzell Chapel Trail, which weaves past 11 chapels. Meanwhile, the tiny village of Appenzell boasts quaint, frescoed shops and Museum Appenzell, which highlights the region's traditional crafts, folk music and art.

Visit the medieval town of Gruyères if you want to feel as if you've stepped back in time during your next trip. Its good looks (think: car-free cobblestone streets, fountain-filled squares and a 13th-century castle) create an old-world ambiance you're bound to love. Plus, the town is world-renowned for its Gruyère cheese, which you can sample and learn more about at a local cheese dairy or cellar. Sampling chocolate is also a must-do here, so be sure to check out a chocolate factory or attend a chocolate workshop while in town.

Mürren, a small alpine town in the Jungfrau Region, is an ideal getaway for movie buffs and adventure seekers. A little more difficult to reach than other destinations on this list, Mürren's car-free status means travelers must arrive on foot, by bike or via public transportation. Once here, travelers can take a cable car to the summit of Mount Schilthorn, whose iconic revolving 360-degree restaurant was featured in the 1969 James Bond film, "On Her Majesty's Secret Service." In winter, Mürren is a hot spot for cold-weather sports like skiing and snowshoeing, while summer beckons hikers and rock climbers.

The Jungfrau Region is the perfect place for first-timers wanting to experience the otherworldly splendor that is the Swiss Alps. But be forewarned: The destination is sky high. Popular attractions like the Jungfraujoch (which features Europe's highest train station), the Grindelwald-First cable car and the First Cliff Walk Presented by Tissot sit at the top of towering peaks. The innovative Eiger Express gondola offers even faster transport to the top (just 15 minutes from Grindelwald). For those who'd rather stick to lower altitudes, prioritize a hike on a valley path and a visit to the Pfingstegg toboggan.

Tourists may not be as familiar with Montreux as they are with its Lake Geneva neighbors, which makes this Swiss town such an undiscovered gem. Quaint Montreux features a waterfront promenade dotted with flowers and trees, a medieval castle and a charming old town, not to mention a statue commemorating Freddie Mercury (Queen recorded multiple albums here from 1978 to 1995). Montreux is also surrounded by vineyards and hosts a popular open-air jazz festival every summer, while the holiday season brings the festive Montreux Noël market.

Considered "the birthplace of Alpine winter tourism," St. Moritz welcomes travelers with world-class skiing, swanky hotels, renowned après-ski offerings and top-notch restaurants. In addition to offering downhill skiing trails so highly regarded that the town has hosted the Olympics twice, St. Moritz features excellent spots for cross-country skiing, sledding and winter hikes. Come summertime, the area invites outdoor lovers to golf, bike, hike or enjoy water sports and swimming in the surrounding lakes.

Like its neighbor Lugano, Locarno is located in the Ticino region near the Italian border. This quiet, small town is surrounded by stunning scenery (it sits on the shores of Lake Maggiore in the foothills of the Alps), and since it's the warmest destination in Switzerland, you'll have plenty of opportunities to get outdoors and explore. Be sure to stroll through the picture-perfect main square, Piazza Grande, where the city hosts several summer festivals, and trek to mount Madonna del Sasso, considered sacred among Roman Catholics. Then, head to the Verzasca river valley to swim or bungee jump.

Sitting just south of Lake Constance near the Germany and Austria borders, St. Gallen dazzles travelers with its fairy-tale old town and rich history. The first item on your itinerary will likely be the outstanding Abbey of St. Gall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site featuring the Baroque-style Cathedral of St. Gallen and the Abbey Library. When you're done wandering through one of the world's oldest libraries, check out one of St. Gallen's fascinating museums, which include the Textilmuseum and the Naturmuseum. Just remember to save time for visiting the gorgeous Drei Weieren (Three Ponds), a popular swimming destination.

Head to Switzerland's third-largest city if you appreciate art. The legendary Art Basel event started here and has since migrated to other cities around the world. What's more, Basel's top attraction, Kunstmuseum Basel, houses the country's largest public collection of art, with works from legends like Paul Cézanne and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. You can find additional museums (roughly 40 in total) and galleries throughout the city. When you need a break from admiring art, Basel's picturesque old town is a beautiful place for a leisurely walk, or you can hop on a ferry for a scenic ride on the Rhine.

Spend any length of time in Switzerland and you’ll come to realise just how distinct the seasons are here and how well the country wears them.

Winter, with its snow-laden peaks, groomed pistes and bluebird days, is peak time for skiers and winter walkers, while summer draws visitors for its scorching temperatures, high alpine hiking trails and lake life.

But spring and autumn have their own appeal: cheaper flights, milder temperatures, quirky festivals and the chance to catch the countryside in flux, from the new bloom of alpine flowers in May and June to the fiery orange blaze of larch trees and vineyards in the fall.Plan your trip around your preferred activities and your budget and you’ll find your own best time to experience this ever-changing country.

July to August is the time for hiking – or partying

Peak summer in Switzerland is tip-top , to borrow the Swiss German phrase. Barring the odd storm, it’s nearly always hot and sunny – oppressively so, sometimes, meaning the best place to be is in the cooler air of the high mountains. Switzerland’s vast number of hiking trails , whether in the Alpes Vaudoises, the  Bernese Oberland or  Graubünden , offer cow-strewn meadows, vertiginous views and glimpses of ibex, marmots and eagles.

Book ahead for a dorm bed in a Swiss Alpine Club cabin – simple hostels strung across the Alps in glorious locations – or stay in one of the grandes dames of the Swiss mountains, such as the  Rigi Kulm Hotel above  Lake Lucerne or the  Berghotel Schynige Platte overlooking  Interlaken , two of the country’s longstanding mountain hotels.

Road cyclists are also spoiled for choice, with the gruelling switchbacks of mountain passes including the Furka, Gotthard and Grimsel presenting the biggest challenges, while mountain bikers hitch their wheels to a ski lift in Verbier to tackle its downhill trails.

Summer is also party time. Check out big names in music at the  Montreux Jazz Festival , the  Gurten Festival near the Swiss capital,  Bern , and the huge techno festival  Street Parade in  Zürich . And don’t miss Swiss National Day, August 1, a national holiday in Switzerland. Join in the celebrations by having  brunch on a farm (booking ahead is essential), watching a city fireworks display or enjoying the wine, raclette and entertainment in any town or small mountain village.

June to September is ideal for sampling lake life in Switzerland

Hanging out by a lake or river is another typically Swiss summer experience. Hardcore wild swimmers take to the lakes at any time of year, but you’ll find warmer water and more atmosphere in summer, when the lakeshores throng with people sunbathing and barbecuing.

Relax next to  Lake Geneva as part of Vevey’s summer-long  Dolce Riviera festival, swim around Bern in the fast-flowing River Aare, paddleboard on Lake Lucerne, dip in the River Rhine in  Basel or hang out at a riverside badi (public swimming baths) in Zürich. If you’d rather be on the water than in it, summer is also peak season for the ferry companies, which offer trips on all the major lakes.

May and September offer Swiss charm – without the expense

Visiting Switzerland in shoulder season brings its own advantages. Not only is it cheaper (deals can be found on flights and hotels) but the heat is less intense than in high summer and each shoulder has a certain appeal. Come in May for blossoming trees, the start of the swimming season (many outdoor pools open in mid-May) and the very enjoyable  caves ouvertes/cantine aperte (open cellars) weekends in the vineyards of  Geneva ,  Vaud ,  Valais ,  Neuchâtel and  Ticino .

With many of the mountain lifts still open and the weather remaining balmy well into the month, September is perfect for hiking or biking. Be sure to catch a désalpe/alpabzug , when the dairy cows, having spent their summers on the alpine pastures, parade down to the valley farms passing through villages en route – an excuse for the locals to eat Alpkäse (alpine cheese), drink wine and make merry. The best known is held in  Charmey , near Gruyères.

Another September party is the  grape harvest festival in Lutry, which celebrates the end of the wine-growing year in The Lavaux , the centuries-old vineyards between Lausanne and  Montreux . The area also makes for pretty autumnal hiking, with wine-tasting spots en route.

October and November are rich with fall colors and food events

There’s a reason why this is the cheapest time to visit Switzerland. With the mountain lifts closed, and many hotels too, villages can be sleepy and the weather unpredictable. But if you get a sunny day and use the bus or train to reach the start of a hike, you’ll be rewarded with a blaze of color in the trees that most visitors never see. It’s also  a great time to eat , with many restaurants serving game meats with traditional accompaniments (chestnuts, sprouts, red cabbage, berries and Spätzli – a sort of Swiss pasta). A number of food events are also worth exploring, including two in the  Swiss Jura : the truffle market in Bonvillars, and the  Feast of St Martin in Porrentruy, where you can fill your belly with as much pork as you can eat.

December to April is best for snow seekers and carnival-goers

Snowsports dominate winter. Skiers and snowboarders love the long groomed slopes and off-piste terrain of big-name resorts such as  Zermatt , Verbier and Laax, but with a lift in almost every mountain village, Switzerland has something for all levels and budgets. Meanwhile, dedicated trails for winter walking, cross-country skiing and tobogganing mean winter isn’t just for powder hounds.

In February/March, carnival season brings traditional guggenmusik bands (brass bands playing oompah-style music) to many towns and cities. The best-known carnival is Basel’s three-day street party,  Fasnacht . Darker traditions abound, too: visit the  Lötschental for its parade of fearsome, mask-wearing Tschäggätta , and the Valais village of  Evolène for a carnival dominated by fur-clad monsters and giant straw-people.
