But, just as Cruise has never addressed his supposed insecurity about his height, he also doesn't really comment on his smile. The only concrete evidence we have of anything he's done comes from the 2002 "Minority Report" premiere, where he was photographed wearing braces that he got to help correct an overbite. "Tom definitely looks swollen and puffy, which could be due to filler, post procedure swelling or weight gain," a practitioner told The U.S. Sun . Some social media users had an issue with this type of coverage, which seemed to disregard the possibility Cruise's swelling could be due to medical reasons. "He looks like he's on prednisone to me," a Twitter user pointed out, referring to the commonly prescribed corticosteroid.

But his role as a super-spy Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible launched Cruise into the highest echelon of stardom. The franchise has grossed over $3.5 billion to date and is rated as the 16th highest-grossing film series of all time.

There is no question that Cruise’s good looks and charisma play a huge part in his success. Some outlets estimate that the actor has a net worth as high as $600 million . It wouldn’t be a shock to learn that he’s tweaked his appearance over the years to maintain a top spot in Hollywood’s pantheon.

Long before Tom Cruise became  an ever-bankable action star , he was Steve Randle in  The Outsiders . And, amidst a cast full of fresh-faced brat pack hunks , it’s his unique set of chompers that set the young actor apart.

Cruise was injured in a hockey accident when he was young — hit by a flying puck — which left his front tooth chipped. And when filming The Outsiders , he decided to remove the cap that covered the crack. The result was purposefully unattractive, as Cruise meant to emulate his dirt-poor greaser character. And though The Outsiders was Cruise’s third movie, the 1983 film marked the first noticeable showcase for his unique mouth.

Corrective Procedures

As Tom Cruise’s career progressed, it’s clear that he received some orthodontic treatments. In addition to getting the original chip filled in, his teeth were whitened and straightened. Famously, in 2002, the then-40-year-old donned adult braces at the Minority Report premiere. Twenty years on, it may seem shocking; less noticeable options like Invisalign are now quite common. But for the time, Cruise’s bracket-less upper braces were actually a subtle choice.

Still, even after braces, Cruise’s signature smile was not quite perfect. His midline is off, creating the appearance of a so-called “middle tooth.” In the video above, a doctor from Premier Orthodontics breaks it down.

The average person has seven teeth on each side on each of their midline. But if you count Cruise’s teeth, it’s apparent that he’s missing the second pre-molar on his left side. (That would be the third tooth from the back.) Naturally, then, when Cruise lost his baby tooth the teeth around it would slide in toward that space… resulting in a midline that’s shifted roughly half-a-tooth toward the left.

And it’s not so uncommon — roughly 3% of the population has a missing tooth.

But since Tom Cruise is, well, Tom Cruise, the obvious next question is… Why doesn’t he get it fixed? The man has an estimated net worth of $600 million! But those options would require another, a longer period of more intense braces.

Tom Cruise’s Adult Braces

Open-coiled springs are one option. The small springs could be wedged into the braces, around the missing premolar, to slowly open up space for a dental implant to be added. In all, the process would take around two years. And two years as a metal mouth is a lot for a man who’s bringing in hundreds of millions at the box office — at age 59!

Regardless of the alignment of his teeth, or his missing premolar, one thing is for sure: Tom Cruise has the smile of a movie star.

Dubbed “Hollywood’s last real movie star,” he is the stuff of legends.

He’s been gracing the big screen since the 80s, smashing out one hit after another, not letting any of his personal life drama or even his age deter him.

Despite being on top of his game, he has managed to stay elusive, not accounting for the display of some “bizarre” moments here and there.

It was at the age of 18 that he seriously started to pursue acting, for which he first went to New York and then Los Angeles (LA) – synonymous with Hollywood itself.

Tom got his first role in Brooke Shields’ Endless Love as Billy. However, he went on to play more prominent roles in Taps and The Outsiders . But it was his breakout role in Top Gun that got everyone’s attention.

A missing tooth on the left side of his upper jaw is also the reason why he has the “middle tooth.” His teeth have shifted to the left, which is why his dental midline is also to the left.

There are also some other stories about Tom Cruise’s teeth. One involves the former editor-in-chief of The New York Post, Col Allan. Apparently, Tom Cruise’s front teeth fell out when he was having drinks with the journalist.

The size of the tooth has also changed. The right tooth is bigger than the left one.

And considering how damaged his tooth was, Tom Cruise’s dentist might have also recommended him a crown to protect the underlying tooth (provided it’s still there).

Tom Cruise’s veneers wouldn’t have been able to do that as effectively. Although if he did get veneers, Tom Cruise’s veneer teeth would have looked just as natural (not considering the misalignment).

However, in an interview with Playboy Magazine, he made it clear that it wasn’t the case and “never would” be. 

Did Tom Cruise Seek the Right Dental Procedures?

As mentioned before, Tom Cruise does have a million-dollar smile. His dentists would have tried their best to make what they could out of his situation.

It may not have been possible for him to undergo more invasive and extensive procedures because of the time constraints his career put on him. He has constantly been in the spotlight since the 80s. 

That said, the actor’s midline could have been better if he had had an implant after he had lost his tooth.

The implants would have acted as a substitute for the natural tooth and not allowed the surrounding teeth to shift. Plus, dental implants Turkey would cost him a little.

When facing severe crowding, the only way to fix the problem is through orthodontic treatment. This can be done with traditional braces or with Invisalign. Before undergoing orthodontic treatment, the crowding may have required several teeth to be removed in order to make room for the rest of the teeth, most likely the premolars ( bicuspid teeth ).

Regardless of what type of orthodontic treatment was done, it is clear that Tom Cruise’s teeth have been significantly straightened. This has dramatically improved his smile and overall appearance.

Veneers or Crowns

Another common treatment to fix the appearance of Tom Cruise’s teeth would be to get veneers or crowns . Veneers and crowns are essentially thin shells that are placed on top of someone’s teeth, which must first be worn down using a dental bur. Even if you've never seen Risky Business , you've probably seen Tom Cruise's infamous underwear dance. According to the actor, he made up the routine himself, on the spot, "I just ad-libbed that," he said during an interview .

But how did he stick the landing on his slide to enter the scene? As he explains, "I dusted the floor and then put stick (tape) on the other side so I would get the center frame on that and wore the socks."

The Mummy Was A Real Monster Behind The Scenes

The Mummy was supposed to start Universal's "Dark Universe." That is until Tom Cruise got his hands on it. According to reports, Cruise took over every aspect of the film, from the story to the direction, and even the editing.

Despite having a team hired by Universal, Cruise brought in his own editor and screenwriter, then wrangled control of the direction away from Alex Kurtzman. For all his meddling, Cruise's version of The Mummy earned terrible reviews and scared audiences away. Made for $190 million, the film only grossed $80 million stateside.

Cruise Destroyed A $100,000 Camera Filming Days Of Thunder

n one scene he lost control of the car and crashed into a wall, destroying a $100,000 camera in the process.

He Didn't Get Paid For Minority Report

Tom Cruise was so passionate to film the 2002 film Minority Report with Steven Spielberg that he refused to take a paycheck. Spielberg refused money also, something he claimed to have on his last eight films. Instead of getting money upfront, the pair cut a deal to earn 15 percent of the movie's gross.

Minority Report made $358 million worldwide, netting Cruise and Spielberg around $54 million each. That's pretty amazing. They took a chance on a passion project and it paid off big time!

He Was A Passenger In A Car Accident During Filming For Edge Of Tomorrow

For Edge Of Tomorrow , Emily Blunt had to drive a van with Tom Cruise as her passenger. The van needed to be seen shaking for one particular scene, so producers had Blunt make a hard turn at a pretty high speed. But she lost control and the van crashed into a tree.

She was upset that she could have injured (or even killed) Cruise, but fortunately, they both walked away unharmed. And even laughed about the incident later.

One Stunt He Didn't Perform

We know that Tom Cruise prefers to perform even the most dangerous stunts himself. But according to director Martin Scorsese, there was one stunt that he didn't complete when filming the 1986 drama The Color of Money .

His character had to perform a bunch of complicated pool shots, which wasn't a problem for Cruise. Except for one: a shot where his ball had to leap over two others and sink a third. Scorsese said that he thinks Cruise could have made the shot but it would have taken two days. And that's just too long during movie production, so an expert was brought in to do the shot.

He Broke His Thumb Making The Outsiders

The 1983 coming-of-age drama The Outsiders featured a fight between two rival gangs, the Greasers and the Socs. Things got pretty out of control during filming and one of Cruise's thumbs was broken in the scuffle.

He wasn't the only one to get hurt in the fight, either; two of Cruise's fellow actors were also injured. Tom Howell got a black eye and Emilio Estevez's lip was cut. That must have been quite a brawl!

He Lost A Lot Of Weight For Risky Business

The creators of Risky Business really wanted Tom Cruise to be as baby-faced as possible. To prepare for the role, he got serious about dropping weight fast. He told People that he followed a strict eating plan and jogged daily in the brutal Florida sunshine for five weeks. And then when he hit his target weight, he stopped exercising completely "so I could put on a little layer of baby fat."

"[Joel Goodson is] a very vulnerable person,” Tom explained. “I didn't want any physical defenses up for him. No muscle armor at all.”

Tom Cruise Has An Impressive Set Of Lungs

For 2015's Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation , Tom Cruise had to hold his breath for almost six and a half minutes! We knew he did all his own stunts but this might be one of the craziest of them. He called the experience unpleasant but explained his training technique to EW .

"You get rid of the regulator, get rid of the bubbles, get on the side and we wanted to do it one shot, so they were very, very long shots," he said. “I'd have to hold it consistently, you know safely, up to four minutes almost for every take.”

He Really Sang In Rock Of Ages

For the 2012 musical Rock of Ages , Tom Cruise insisted on singing his own parts. Of course, he did, right? He trained for four months, up to five hours each day to perfect his voice.

Cruise also filmed the scene where he sang "Pour Some Sugar On Me" while Def Leppard (the band that originally performed the song) watched. The guy just doesn't like to make things easy for himself.

In the 1989 war drama Born on the Fourth of July , Tom Cruise played a real-life Vietnam War veteran named Ron Kovic. Kovic was actually born on the 4th of July, as the title indicates.

It turns out that Cruise and Kovic almost share the birthday. Cruise was born on July 3, though, just a day early. Audiences didn't mind the discrepancy (as if they were even aware of it), as the film pulled in $161 million worldwide.

He Wasn't Expecting Emily Blunt To Kiss Him In Edge Of Tomorrow

Maybe he hadn't read the script thoroughly, because it sounds like Tom Cruise was surprised when Emily Blunt kissed him during filming for Edge of Tomorrow . She opened up about the moment to BBC Radio . "I mean, [it was] great. I don't think he was expecting it. I just sort of planted one on him," she said.

Blunt continued, "I think he was a bit taken aback. He was like, 'Oh my god! This is what we're doing.' Well, Tom had read the scene but he hadn't really read the stage directions. There were some new pages."

He Holds A Huge Box Office Record

We already know that his movies rake in tons of money at the box office, but Tom Cruise holds another distinction in that area. He became the first actor ever to star in five consecutive movies that each made more than $100 million in the United States.

While providing commentary for the 2004 DVD release of the film, producers revealed that executive Jeffrey Katzenberg decided that the animation should be modeled after Cruise because of his "iconic hero" look.

Why Tom Cruise Fans Think The Star Had Plastic Surgery

Tom Cruise has long been deemed one of Hollywood's most desirable men, but even that has not exempted him from plastic surgery rumors. This has been primarily due to his changing looks over the years, such as a possible decrease in wrinkles, which some have attributed to Botox. Several surgeons have suggested that Cruise had multiple procedures

After Tom Cruise was spotted at the baseball game, Dr. Frank Agullo expressed his thoughts about the actor's face to Radar Online . "Tom Cruise has always seemed to defy aging, but in this photo, it seems like he has gained facial weight or had too much fillers to the cheeks," he explained. Another surgeon weighed in after Tom Cruise stepped out in Miami for the May 7, 2023, Miami Formula One Grand Prix, with what appeared to be a more chiseled jawline.

Plastic surgeon Dr. Richard Westreich of New Face New York, broke down why this may have been, telling The U.S. Sun that he believed Cruise could have spent upward of $50,000 to improve his face. "There's the possibility of functional rhinoplasty, of laser skin, resurfacing, and perhaps even a little lipo under his chin," he explained. Neither professional has worked on Cruise, so their observations are only their expert opinions. While there could be some validity, the Oscar nominee previously shared that he would never undergo such enhancements.

Cruise once stated he wouldn't get any cosmetic work done

The former husband of Katie Holmes  sat down with Playboy Magazine in May 2012, where he answered a series of questions. Cosmetic surgery came up in the chat. When asked if Tom Cruise ever underwent any beauty alterations, he replied, "I haven't, and I never would." It's possible he could have had a change of heart in the years that followed, though the relatively private action movie star may never confirm nor deny the allegations.

While such theories have plagued the "Mission Impossible" star, they are certainly not the most scandalous controversies of Cruise's career . There has been no concrete evidence to suggest Cruise has gone under the knife. Still, the rumors likely won't stop as he continues to age. Thankfully, his changing appearance has not stopped the Hollywood legend from securing film roles and remaining popular amongst the ladies.

Just like a vampire's lifespan, Tom Cruise 's famous holiday coconut cake is eternal! Kirsten Dunst sat down with ET's Kevin Frazier to reflect on the 30th anniversary of her hit film,  Interview With a Vampire , where the subject of her co-star, Cruise, came up. 

"Still getting that cake," Dunst, 41, revealed to ET. 

She added of her husband and frequent co-star  Jesse Plemons , "Jesse gets the cakes so we double up on our cakes."

Plemons and Cruise co-starred in 2017's American Made . 

Cruise's holiday cake gift is the dessert of legends with the A-lister reportedly sending the cake to a long list of fellow celebrities each year. 

As for Dunst's thoughts on the classic 1994 vampire film, which also co-starred Brad Pitt and Antonio Banderas , she has nothing but positive associations with the film. 

"When I think back I have fond memories. It was a production like nothing I have experienced to this day. The costumes and the sets. It changed the course of my life," she shared. 

These days, Dunst is tackling another kind of horror film with her dystopian flick, Civil War . In the movie, Dunst plays Lee, a photojournalist documenting a civil war happening within modern-day America. Plemons appears opposite his wife and the mother of his two children, playing an extremist militia member. 

"He wouldn't have played a part like this if I wasn't in the film," Dunst shared. "He did a favor for us because that is a really disturbing role to play."

The couple has teamed up on several projects together, including their turn on Fargo , the show where they met.  

Civil War  is in theaters April 12.
