Why Visit Bogota Colombia?

According to Nobel Laureate Gabriel Garcia Marquez ,  in Colombia "any gathering of more than six people regardless of class or hour is doomed to turn into a dance.” If that isn’t a reason to visit Bogota, what is? This Latin American metropolis is currently experiencing an unprecedented artistic, culinary and cultural boom you won’t find in other capitals of the region. In just 2-3 days, you can cover the cities main sights and you might even consider extending your trip by another few days to explore all that this up-and-coming city has to offer. In addition, Bogotá is an often necessary jumping-off point to other destinations like Medellin, Cartagena, Tayrona, la Guajira and la Ciudad Perdida, whether you’re traveling by plane, bus or car, so you mine as well take advantage and venture into this thriving metropolis. Finally, the city of Bogotá, surrounded by green peaks, is a spectacular sight to behold. This dramatic backdrop corresponds to its rich history, which extends far beyond the 16th-century Spanish conquest and into the intoxicating energy and optimism pulsating through its streets today.

With over 8 million inhabitants , Bogotá can be an intimidating place to visit for even the most big-city dwellers. A sprawling 1,587 square kilometres (613 square miles), it’s a multi-faceted metropolis with hundreds of gems and nooks to discover. Even the most comprehensive Bogota Colombia travel guide wouldn’t be able to cover the entire city with all of its beauty and intricacies, but we will do our best to share the highlights you simply can’t miss during your visit.

Bogota's Role in Colombian History

Bogotá was founded on August 6, 1538, by Spanish explorer Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada, who named it after his hometown of Bogotá in present-day Spain. Originally a small indigenous village, Bogotá flourished as a trade center due to its strategic location at the intersection of two major trade routes. However, Bogotá's fortunes changed in the mid-1700s when it was occupied by rebel forces led by Juan del Corral. The city did not recover from this setback until the early 19th century when it began to experience a period of rapid growth. Since then, Bogotá has continued to grow and evolve, becoming one of the largest and most vibrant cities in South America.

Altitude in Bogota

Located in one of the six regions of the country, the Andean Region, in the middle of Colombia, Bogotá sits at 2,640 meters (8,660 feet) above sea level, making it the third-highest capital city in South America, after La Paz and Quito. This doesn’t mean much until you start exploring on foot and quickly become short of breath. In fact, you might even get a little dizzy or nauseous, in which case you’re suffering from altitude sickness, also known as soroche, in the Andes.

Pro tip : To help your body acclimate to the altitude, try and take it easy on your first day; avoid strenuous activities, like hiking. Also, stay hydrated and get plenty of rest. A local trick to curing soroche is a panacea - warm agua de panela (melted sugar cane with squeezed lemon) which you can find from street vendors around the city.

Weather in Bogota

If there’s one thing you don’t need to worry about in Bogotá, it’s the weather. The climate here is moderate throughout the year 7°C-19°C (45°F-66°F), though the rainy season occurs around April - March and October - November. Mist and cloud cover is common in the city, but you can also expect plenty of sunshine. Make sure to always pack a light sweater and rain protection since the temperature may fluctuate throughout the day.

Pro tip : There are really only two seasons in Bogotá, wet and dry, and the sun sets and rises consistently throughout the year, around 6:15 in the morning and evening. As soon as the sun drops over the horizon, expect the temperature to drop significantly; make sure to bring a light sweater or jacket.

Neighborhoods in Bogota Colombia

La Candelaria, Bogota, Colombia

Bogota is organized into 20 Districts, and a few of them can’t be missed. Among these are: La Candelaria (the historic city center) Chapinero-Zona T , the Zona Rosa , La Macarena in Santa Fé, Parque 93, and Usaquén's colonial center. If you’re not sure where to start, head to the colonial neighborhood of La Candelaria.

You’ll find that the majority of these neighborhoods, their restaurants and hotels, are found in the north and center of the city, while the South is where most working-class families reside.

There are many ways to get to Bogota. Because the capital of Colombia is in the center of the country as well as the gateway to the South American continent, many flights include a stopover at Bogota’s airport El Dorado . Many international airlines arrive to the city including Iberia, Avianca, Air France, Air Canada, Lufthansa, British Airways, and American Airlines. Another way to get to the capital of Colombia if you are on the continent is by bus from countries like Brazil, Ecuador, Chile, Bolivia, Venezuela, and Peru.

If you’re entering Bogota by plane, you’ll most likely land in El Dorado International Airport ( BOG ), which offers travelers many connections and direct flights to other countries in the region, as well as domestic flights to Colombian destinations.

Pro tip : Are you looking for some affordable domestic flights? Check out wingo.com. Viva Air & Air Colombia tend to be the cheapest (though their customer service could improve and they tend to nickel and dime you with extras - print your boarding pass in advance!) So, if you can, choose Avianca or Copa instead.

Bogota’s main bus station is called El Terminal de Transporte de Bogotá (Terminal Salitre). If you’re traveling from a neighboring country by bus, this is where you’ll end up. It’s also only a short taxi ride away from the airport.

There are two other bus stations in Bogota that are useful to know. They are La Terminal del Sur (South Terminal) located along Autopista Sur at Carrera 59 in La Bosa and Terminal Satelite del Norte (North Terminal) located on Calle 192, #19-43 off of Ave Carrera 45.

Transportation in and around Bogota

As you travel around Bogotá, you’ll have numerous options to choose from to explore the city.

TransMilenio BRT (Bus Rapid Transit) system

TransMilenio BRT is an affordable and efficient way to get pretty much anywhere in the city. Note that the buses tend to get crowded around rush hour and as always, practice good safety measures and keep a close eye on your phone and possessions.

Pro tip : A few helpful apps to get around Bogotá include MoviliXA, Moovit and Google Maps (download an “offline map” of the city to save on data). Figure out your route while you have wifi so you don’t miss your stop on the TransMilenio!

Apart from the TransMilenio, there are regular buses to get you around town. Getting around on these may require a bit more research; make sure you know which bus to take and where to hop off.

Taxis and Ubers

are another good option to get around Bogota, though Ubers are technically not legal. Drivers may often ask you to sit in the front to avoid raising suspicion among police. In terms of safety, always try to have your taxis radioed in or use Uber, which also tends to be the cheaper option. If you’re taking a taxi, ask a local (or your hostel staff) about the price to avoid getting ripped off, though most taxis will use a meter.

Another great option if you like to cycle is to rent a bike as Bogotá has the most extensive network of bike paths in the country. Cycling is a great way to explore the city’s nooks and crannies and skip its notorious traffic jams. If you want to cycle but feel disoriented, look into joining a bike tour ( Bogota Bicycle Tour is a great option)

The Best Time to Visit Bogota

There really is no wrong time to visit Bogotá. Since the weather is pretty consistent, the only other factor you should consider are national holidays and high tourist seasons.

In terms of national holidays, December is a festive time to visit and, if your trip coincides, make sure to explore the Festival of Lights in Villa de Leyva , just outside the city. In March, you’ll be able to check out the Estéreo Picnic Music Festival , Colombia’s biggest alternative music festival, and one of the most recognized across South America. Then, during the summer, there’s Bogota’s Festival de Veranos that showcases performances in Simon Bolivar Metropolitan Park concert stage as well as other venues across town.

In September and October, you can attend Bogota’s International Jazz Festival or its International Film Festival , respectively. Both events attract region-wide spectators and feature internationally recognized musicians and films.

In terms of high tourism season, these coincide with the dry season between December and February and the summer months from June to August.

What to do in Bogota - Must-See Attractions

When visiting Bogota, expect to have a few jam-packed days of exploration. There are seriously so many things to do in Bogota, it can get overwhelming, so here are some of our favorite activities:

Cerro de Monserrate / Mount Monserrate

Mount Monserrate, Bogota, Colombia

You can’t miss it, it’s literally the mountain looming over the city, known for its panoramic views and a sacred church, the Montserrat Monastery. This is an ideal activity for one of your first days in the city, since it provides excellent perspective on the city’s sheer size. To reach the top of Monserrate , you can either take a cable car or hike. Both are awesome in their own right. Given the city's high altitude, if it's one of your first days in the city, the cable car might be the move. if your body is more acclimated, or you're feeling up for the challenge, the hike up is beautiful as well.

pro tip : Arrive around 4pm to ensure you are there for sunset and reserve dinner at San Isidro. As lines can get long during busy times, you can buy tickets online .

Visіt the Historic La Candelaria neighborhood

Full of colonial buildings, a visit to La Candelaria is like traveling back in time. While exploring, make sure to order a cup of chicha , eat tamales and stop through Plaza de Bolivar, Calle de Embudo, Primada Cathedral, San Francisco Church, San Agustin Church, and Carrera Septima street, where you’ll often see street performers.

Although being the smallest district of Colombia's capital, La Candelaria offers a tremendous diversity of heritage infused in each of its cobbled landed streets

La Candelaria Map, Bogota, Colombia

City tours are probably one of the easiest ways to explore Bogota, and there are a number to choose from, like food tours, street art tours, free walking tours ( Gran Colombia offers a free walking tour daily at 10am and 2pm) and bicycle tours. You can find several options with a simple Google Search or on Tripadvisor.

Graffiti Tour

Graffiti La Candelaria, Bogota, Colombia

Not everyone wants to show their work in a gallery or display it in conventional ways, and Colombia's graffiti artists have been years ahead of the game when it comes to utilizing unusual public spaces to display and inspire a new generation of art fans.

With the declassification of graffiti from a crime to merely a "violation" Bogotá has become a mecca for home-grown and international artists alike.

Take a graffiti tour of Bogota and you'll find yourself immersed in Colombia's history as well as its present, because the city's street artists are constantly finding new methods to express everything the country has gone through. Graffiti artists and collectives take inspiration from the lives of everyday people, and their work often serves as a mirror for society at large. Hearing the stories behind the art will surely leave you with a whole new appreciation for Colombia.

A Bogota graffiti tour will not only introduce you to Colombian art, but it will also bring you into the beating heart of the Colombian capital. Look for unique architecture, vendors selling juice from exotic tropical fruits, and dark gloomy cafés where some of Colombia's greatest writers produced their works, during your trip around the city.

Pro tip: The Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 9am to 6pm, and on Sundays from 10am to 4pm. Touring the whole museum will take about 3-4 hours (although of course it can be done in less if your in a time crunch). Art Galleries

Bogotá has a thriving art scene that you can explore by touring its art galleries like:

La Silueta Casa

Instituto de visión, la ciclovía.

And that’s not all, in Carrera 7, from Parque de La Independencia in La Macarena to Plaza Bolivar, you can enjoy an impromptu street party with street musicians, performers and vendors.

This pedestrian street goes from Plaza de Simon Bolivia up to the National Museum. Since it’s closed to vehicles, it’s a wonderful route for a stroll and an opportunity to enjoy street performers, street art and eat tasty bites from the street food carts.

Teatro Colon

Teatro Colon, Bogota, Colombia

What better way to explore a new city than by visiting its markets. (You’ll also be able to stock up on souvenirs and gifts.) Some of the best markets in town are Chapinero Farmers’ Market , Paloquemao , and Usaquén Market. Keep your eyes open for delicious chocolates, world-famous Colombian coffee, ceramics and even hammocks.

Mercado Paloquemao, Bogota, Colombia

If you like combining gunpowder with beer, you’ll probably like Tejo. This is a national sport that involves throwing metal discs at a ceramic board. If you hit the right spots, you win points and are also rewarded with a loud blast and spark from a small packet of gunpowder. Checkout Anthony Bourdain’s hilarious demonstration of playing Tejo during his trip to Colombia. This is the perfect activity if you’re traveling with a group of friends. Where is such an activity accessible, legal and pretty safe you might ask?: Club de Tejo La 76 For some do’s (and dont’s), check out this awesome clip of Anthony Bourdain playing Tejo during one of his many trips to Colombia.

Learn to Salsa Dance

Even with two left feet, you’ll enjoy learning salsa in Colombia, one of the world’s salsa capitals. After a couple of classes, head over to Galería Café Libro to put your moves to the test (classes are also often offered here before the night begins).

Bogota’s Botanical Gardens

The Botanical Gardens are an oasis within the city itself featuring an amazing variety of plants and trees from every region in Colombia including greenhouses with all types of climates, ponds

Bogota Botanical Gardens

From the north othe city, you can take the Quebrada la Vieja páramo trail all the way up the Cerros Orientales (Eastern hills). While access is free, you need to make a reservation online in advance.

On the outskirts of Bogotá you’ll find la Calera, a popular weekend destination for locals because of its natural surroundings, impressive views and delicious colombian food. La Calera can easily be reached by taxi from Bogotá.

Day trips from Bogota

If you have a full day to spare during your visit, check out one of the following day trip destinations.

Zipaquirá Salt Cathedral

Located about an hour’s drive from Bogotá, this was a salt mine for the indigenous Muisca people that inhabited the region prior to the Spanish invasion. Much later, it was turned into a Cathedral, which explains the gigantic cross in its final chamber. If you like, you can travel to Zipaquirá by train .

La Chorrera Waterfall

Colombia’s tallest waterfall (590 meters) and is only 1 hour and 40 minutes from Bogotá. Take the Transmilenio south to Tercer Milenio then head to the nearby bus station to grab a bus to Choachi.

Villa de Leyva

Another worthwhile day trip is a visit to, a colonial town about 3.5 hours from Bogotá by car or bus. The town, having been well preserved since its founding in the 16th century, provides visitors a glimpse into what life might’ve looked like, back in the day.

Laguna de Guatavita

historically a sacred lake to the indigenous Muisca people, and the site of gold rituals is, today, a lush, protected area only 1.5 hours from Bogotá. While you’re there, check out the hot springs in Sesquilé.

Where to Eat in Bogota

Foodie or not, you’ll be blown away by the gastronomical options and variety in Bogotá. While you can buy many local classics like arepas, empanadas and soups all over the city, there are a few spots in town renowned for the quality of their food that you simply can’t miss.

Andres Carne de Res

  • Andrés Carne de Res is truly a unique experience, not just a restaurant. The original Andrés Carne de Res is located about 45 minutes outside the city and is well worth the trek. While a closer Bogota location exists, if you can make the time, the original is 100% the way to go. As its name implies, the speciality here is grilled meat, though there are many vegetarian dishes you can also sample, like plátano maduro relleno de queso y bocadillo (baked plantains stuffed with cheese and guava), and arepas de choclo (sweet corn cakes). Later in the evenings, especially on Saturdays, the restaurant transforms into a nightclub with performances and lots of dancing - Colombian style.

Andres Carne de Res, Bogota, Colombia

Near Candelaria, you’ll find a number of other delicious spots, like Prudencia , built in a renovated colonial French-style home, and only open for lunch (vegetarian option available), and De Una Travel Bar , where you’re find a variety of South American dishes in a laid-back environment.

If you’re looking for a local favorite, check out La Puerta Falsa , renowned for its delicious tamales , and located just a block from la Plaza de Bolivar. Finally, Capital Cocina transports you straight into a Colombian home with its mouth-watering soups, grilled chicken and steak.

Finally, if you’d like something a bit more modern, visit the beautifully decorated Madre for their brick oven-baked pizzas and cocktails.

Only a 2-minute walk from Museo Botero is El Son de Los Grillos, a charming spot that fuses international cuisine with traditional Colombian recipes. You can’t go wrong at la Chichería Demente with its open style, industrial layout and decor. Nearly all ingredients are locally-sourced and it’s a great place to go with a group to taste a variety of dishes.

Pro tip:   While exploring the city, keep your eye peeled for Juan Valdez and the BBC - Bogota Beer Company. These two chains can be found throughout the city and are a great alternative for when you need a quick coffee or bite to eat. They are especially useful on Sundays when nearly everything else is closed.

Best Nightlife in Bogotá

If you like a good party, you’ve come to the right city; Bogotá has a popping night scene. When in doubt, head to Chapinero’s Zona T with many bars and nightclubs to choose from.

Before partying, grab a few cocktails in the luxurious Red Room or, if you prefer drinks with a view, head to Apache Bar , located on the 10th floor of the beautifully designed (and very pricey) Click Clack Hotel overlooking the city. Llorente, another good spot, is found in the Quinta Camacho neighborhood, offers live music, food and drinks in an elegant environment.

If you’re looking to practice your Spanish and make new friends, head to Vintrash on a Tuesday night for Gringo Tuesday. After practicing your Spanish or English, you can practice your dance moves and get down to some reggaeton.

For the hard core partiers among you, head to Theatrón , known as one of South Americas best  gay bars. But all are welcome here and there’s more than enough space, since the club spans 5 stories and 13 dance floors. Other good places to dance include Kukaramákara , a typical Colombian bar, Armando Records ,  a multi-level bar with a variety of music and cool rooftop, and el Bembé, a cuban salsa joint with excellent mojitos.

Given the sheer size and demographic mix of Bogota, there are thousands of accommodation options to choose from. Finding one that is well-situated and also fits your budget can be overwhelming. Although you can find tons of options on Tripadvisor or hostelworld, below are a few of our favorites:

Click Clack Hotel

If you're looking for a modern luxury option (and willing to spend a little extra) check out Following up on the success of their sister location in Medellin, they do a great job of creating beautiful experimental design. Located next to Park 93 in one of the city's key cultural and business hubs.

The Four Seasons

For a top-notch luxury accommodations, this is truly a thing of beauty. This 1946 building, complete with stone columns, beamed ceilings and hand-carved details, has recently been declared a Monument of Cultural Interest by Colombia’s Ministry of Culture. Located in Zona G, the hotel is steps from many of Bogotá’s five-star restaurants.

If you're an adventurous traveler looking for a quality, yet affordable option, as well a place to meet other travelers, hostels are a great choice. You’ll find many hostel options around la Candelaria which, apart from being a lovely colonial district, is also the most convenient spot from which to explore the city and its main sites. Access around la Candelaria to public transport is easy, and you’ll find many places to stop for some delicious home brewed Colombian coffee, lunch, or an evening drink.

The Dreamer

Dreamer Bogotá, (opening in 2023) is located in La Candelaria, is a recently renovated and an excellent option for those that want a cozy, comfortable and conveniently located home base while visiting Bogotá. It overlooks the park, Parque de los Periodistas Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and also has panoramic views of Cerro de Monserrate.

If you're planning on staying in la Candelaria neighborhood this is a great option.

Travel Tips and Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is bogota safe.

Yes. Despite its tumultuous history involving guerilla groups and drug cartels, Bogota, and much of Colombia, is considered perfectly safe. In fact, likely because of its history, great effort has been made to ensure Bogotá is a safe city for travelers of all types. That said, as in most other Latin America capitals, certain precautions will always be necessary, but most of these are common sense.

Generally speaking, apart from the most visited neighborhoods like La Candelaria, Chapinero-Zona T, the Zona Rosa, don’t wander around areas of the city that you’re unfamiliar with. Also, in the evening, always try to take a safe taxi or Uber, rather than a random taxi off the street.

Pro tip : No dar papaya . This is a colloquialism that literally translates to “don’t give papaya.” In other words, don’t give people the chance to steal your possessions. Always keep an eye on your personal belongings, also, don’t flash your cash, letting people know how much money you’re carrying. Particularly on public transport, be cautious when using your phone publically and keep valuable in your front pockets.

How many days should you spend in Bogotá?

Try to set aside at least two days, if not three, to explore Bogotá. This will give you enough time to visit its best museums (like the Museo del Oro , which is stunning!), wander through the la Candelaria district, and eat at some of its top-rated restaurants.

What should I pack?

Apart from a rain jacket (or an umbrella which can be purchased on the street, if need be!), all you really need in Bogotá are comfortable shoes, a sweater or light jacket for the evenings and sun protection (hat, sunscreen, possible a light long-sleeved shirt).

The riches you won’t find in Colombia’s breathtaking Caribbean beaches and its lush tropical rainforest can be found in Bogota’s museums, parks and along its cobblestone streets. To close this Guide to Bogota, here are a few final tips you should keep in mind during your journey.

Though younger Colombian generations are well-equipped in English, most of the population won’t speak it well. Brush up on your Spanish before (and during) your trip to facilitate your travel experience and to interact more authentically with locals.

Bogota is an entire world in and of itself. If you have some time to spare, consider spending more than two nights here. A more reasonable timeframe would be 3 nights and 4 days - you really won’t regret it!

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Small restaurant, looking more like a cafeteria for the first impresion. Everyone will find something interesting in the menu. Some vegetarian options as well (we had great eggplant). The best I will remember for long were sauces for lomo and chicken. You can taste both... on one plate, perfect choice for meet eaters. I’m in love! Greta and healthy herbal tee. Be smart and choose the one you like cause the „casa” one os with panela which is not our favourite! More

The itinerary was well planned to see the sights I was interested in. My guides and drivers were all very good. I feel I saw the highlights of this interesting country and also some of the more authentic places as my trip included a lot... of driving. Communication with Karol at de Una was excellent and she was always responsive. I am very pleased with having worked with de Una. More

This is a fantastic little restaurant in La Candelaria. Great friendly service. Really nice welcoming atmosphere. And fabulous South American food. Good quality ingredients. Well cooked and very tasty. Ate their twice in 3 days. And will go back again.

Muchas gracias por visitarnos y esperamos vuelvas pronto!

This spot can be found in the Candelaria which is the historical center of the city or Old Town. It is a great place to enjoy a drink at the bar or to stop off and have a bit to eat. The staff are wonderfully... friendly and helpful. The decor of the place is warm and welcoming and the ambiance is relaxing and positive. The sandwiches were of a reasonable price and size but the quality was outstanding in my opinion! More

Can here for lunch. Staff were next to useless, sat chatting away ignored the customers. Had to ask for menu, then to be served, then for a glass to drink out of. Honestly utterly useless. The food was just as bad as the service. This... is in the heart of tourist land and they know you will never go back so service reflects this.... just don’t go!! More

We went for dinner at de Una. The menu was available in English which helped us a lot. We ordered the aubergine lasagne and the chicken salsa. The portion was just enough and the food was flavorful and delicious.

thank you so much for your rate, we hope that you come back soon, remember that DEUNATRAVEL is your home.

Pro’s: started off ok .. but deteriorated.. Sweet guy came to take orders .. very friendly.. had option of Spanish or English menu .. left both ., good as we need to practice our Spanish!! Food looked good .. veggie options (as I’m veggie) Cons:... food ok but nothing special .. my salad was supposed to have roasted eggplant on it but was missing and the sweet peppers were tiny nibs that you would miss .. only about 6 slices of mushroom and that was the main part of dish and sooo much lettuce that was eventually left on the plate (as you can only eat so much lettuce!) We asked for 2 x gin n tonics .. they were the smallest in the world but were two for one on happy hour .. we ordered 2 more but they never came .. but were then charged for 4 on bill!! Fortunately the waiter did confirm we had only had 2 so they changed the bill.. good job we queried it though despite not speaking any Spanish.. we felt brave!! Staff behind counter seemed more interested in folding napkins than serving customers or taking their drinks that had been ordered (and after double checking with them that we wanted 2x drinks the same!) My partner has just told me that he had a hair in his sandwich.. says it all really !! More

Lamentamos mucho la mala experiencia que tuvieron. Gracias a su comentario tomamos los correctivos necesarios y el personal fue removido... More

So I stumbled across this delightful little bar/restaurant completely by accident as I just needed to use the toilet but decided to stay for a beer with a friend as I don’t like to use a restaurants facilities without at least buying a beer. Well... that’s what I tell myself but lets face it, its just an excuse for a cold one! and who am I to argue with myself haha. I was so very pleasantly surprised by the prices in this little bar!! It was so reasonably priced I had to look twice, maybe thrice!! it was only 4 COP for a beer! "I will have UNA CERVEZA POR FAVOR Garcon, and you keep them coming”. Well I didn’t actually say that but I was thinking it! The lovely Nancy and one woman army who runs the place really is an absolute delight, so friendly and gave some recommendations when we fancied trying out a local Colombian shot, it’s all about blending in ladies and gentleman (even if you are ginger and Northern Irish). After a few beer…….and another shot later we decided to turn our attention to the food and see what was on offer. She obviously has an eye for the none Spanish speakers amongst us and handed me an english menu, which I very much appreciated, you know, because I don’t speak Spanish ha. Not being that hungry I just went for some nibbles, so me and a friend shared some pastry things that were stuffed with mince, they were actually very tasty and just when we thought our dining was done for the evening we were presented with some little potatoes which were very nicely seasoned. BEWARE, DO NOT EAT STRAIGHT AWAY, MY FRIEND BURNED THE TONGUE CLEAN OFF HERSELF. I was worried for my friend…... nah thats a lie because the whole situation was hilarious. So after I let these Lava potatoes cool a bit unlike my friend I polished them off in a matter of seconds. I really would recommend checking this place out as it is so reasonably priced, the foods tasty and the service was very pleasant. Whats not to like about that!! Even if its just for a beer More

Muchas gracias por compartir tu experiencia ! Cuando quieras regresar tendrás un lugar en el De Una travel. Feliz 2019

I had a lovely and filling lunch at De Una of juice, soup, and an entree for a very reasonable price. I appreciated the wholesome ingredients and the abundance of vegetables!

Muchas gracias por tu comentario de excelencia, nos ayuda para cada día hacer las cosas mejor.

Great place for budget travelers! There are cheap food choices as well as plenty of drinks - if you're in Colombia, you should try a shot of aguardiente. The food was delicious and the atmosphere was really great. Would highly recommend! More

The Comprehensive Guide to Moscow Nightlife

  • Posted on April 14, 2018 July 26, 2018

  • 8 minute read

una travel bar

Moscow’s nightlife scene is thriving, and arguably one of the best the world has to offer – top-notch Russian women, coupled with a never-ending list of venues, Moscow has a little bit of something for everyone’s taste. Moscow nightlife is not for the faint of heart – and if you’re coming, you better be ready to go Friday and Saturday night into the early morning.

This comprehensive guide to Moscow nightlife will run you through the nuts and bolts of all you need to know about Moscow’s nightclubs and give you a solid blueprint to operate with during your time in Moscow.

What you need to know before hitting Moscow nightclubs

Prices in moscow nightlife.

Before you head out and start gaming all the sexy Moscow girls , we have to talk money first. Bring plenty because in Moscow you can never bring a big enough bankroll. Remember, you’re the man so making a fuzz of not paying a drink here or there will not go down well.

Luckily most Moscow clubs don’t do cover fees. Some electro clubs will charge 15-20$, depending on their lineup. There’s the odd club with a minimum spend of 20-30$, which you’ll drop on drinks easily. By and large, you can scope out the venues for free, which is a big plus.

Bottle service is a great deal in Moscow. At top-tier clubs, it starts at 1,000$. That’ll go a long way with premium vodka at 250$, especially if you have three or four guys chipping in. Not to mention that it’s a massive status boost for getting girls, especially at high-end clubs.

Without bottle service, you should estimate a budget of 100-150$ per night. That is if you drink a lot and hit the top clubs with the hottest girls. Scale down for less alcohol and more basic places.

Dress code & Face control

Door policy in Moscow is called “face control” and it’s always the guy behind the two gorillas that gives the green light if you’re in or out.

In Moscow nightlife there’s only one rule when it comes to dress codes:

You can never be underdressed.

People dress A LOT sharper than, say, in the US and that goes for both sexes. For high-end clubs, you definitely want to roll with a sharp blazer and a pocket square, not to mention dress shoes in tip-top condition. Those are the minimum requirements to level the playing field vis a vis with other sharply dressed guys that have a lot more money than you do. Unless you plan to hit explicit electro or underground clubs, which have their own dress code, you are always on the money with that style.

Getting in a Moscow club isn’t as hard as it seems: dress sharp, speak English at the door and look like you’re in the mood to spend all that money that you supposedly have (even if you don’t). That will open almost any door in Moscow’s nightlife for you.

Types of Moscow Nightclubs

In Moscow there are four types of clubs with the accompanying female clientele:

High-end clubs:

These are often crossovers between restaurants and clubs with lots of tables and very little space to dance. Heavy accent on bottle service most of the time but you can work the room from the bar as well. The hottest and most expensive girls in Moscow go there. Bring deep pockets and lots of self-confidence and you have a shot at swooping them.

Regular Mid-level clubs:

They probably resemble more what you’re used to in a nightclub: big dancefloors, stages and more space to roam around. Bottle service will make you stand out more but you can also do well without. You can find all types of girls but most will be in the 6-8 range. Your targets should always be the girls drinking and ideally in pairs. It’s impossible not to swoop if your game is at least half-decent.

Basic clubs/dive bars:

Usually spots with very cheap booze and lax face control. If you’re dressed too sharp and speak no Russian, you might attract the wrong type of attention so be vigilant. If you know the local scene you can swoop 6s and 7s almost at will. Usually students and girls from the suburbs.

Electro/underground clubs:

Home of the hipsters and creatives. Parties there don’t mean meeting girls and getting drunk but doing pills and spacing out to the music. Lots of attractive hipster girls if that is your niche. That is its own scene with a different dress code as well.

una travel bar

What time to go out in Moscow

Moscow nightlife starts late. Don’t show up at bars and preparty spots before 11pm because you’ll feel fairly alone. Peak time is between 1am and 3am. That is also the time of Moscow nightlife’s biggest nuisance: concerts by artists you won’t know and who only distract your girls from drinking and being gamed. From 4am to 6am the regular clubs are emptying out but plenty of people, women included, still hit up one of the many afterparty clubs. Those last till well past 10am.

As far as days go: Fridays and Saturdays are peak days. Thursday is an OK day, all other days are fairly weak and you have to know the right venues.

The Ultimate Moscow Nightclub List

Short disclaimer: I didn’t add basic and electro clubs since you’re coming for the girls, not for the music. This list will give you more options than you’ll be able to handle on a weekend.

Preparty – start here at 11PM

Classic restaurant club with lots of tables and a smallish bar and dancefloor. Come here between 11pm and 12am when the concert is over and they start with the actual party. Even early in the night tons of sexy women here, who lean slightly older (25 and up).

The second floor of the Ugolek restaurant is an extra bar with dim lights and house music tunes. Very small and cozy with a slight hipster vibe but generally draws plenty of attractive women too. A bit slower vibe than Valenok.

Very cool, spread-out venue that has a modern library theme. Not always full with people but when it is, it’s brimming with top-tier women. Slow vibe here and better for grabbing contacts and moving on.

una travel bar

High-end: err on the side of being too early rather than too late because of face control.

Secret Room

Probably the top venue at the moment in Moscow . Very small but wildly popular club, which is crammed with tables but always packed. They do parties on Thursdays and Sundays as well. This club has a hip-hop/high-end theme, meaning most girls are gold diggers, IG models, and tattooed hip hop chicks. Very unfavorable logistics because there is almost no room no move inside the club but the party vibe makes it worth it. Strict face control.

Close to Secret Room and with a much more favorable and spacious three-part layout. This place attracts very hot women but also lots of ball busters and fakes that will leave you blue-balled. Come early because after 4am it starts getting empty fast. Electronic music.

A slightly kitsch restaurant club that plays Russian pop and is full of gold diggers, semi-pros, and men from the Caucasus republics. Thursday is the strongest night but that dynamic might be changing since Secret Room opened its doors. You can swoop here but it will be a struggle.

Mid-level: your sweet spot in terms of ease and attractiveness of girls for an average budget.

Started going downwards in 2018 due to lax face control and this might get even worse with the World Cup. In terms of layout one of the best Moscow nightclubs because it’s very big and bottle service gives you a good edge here. Still attracts lots of cute girls with loose morals but plenty of provincial girls (and guys) as well. Swooping is fairly easy here.

I haven’t been at this place in over a year, ever since it started becoming ground zero for drunken teenagers. Similar clientele to Icon but less chic, younger and drunker. Decent mainstream music that attracts plenty of tourists. Girls are easy here as well.

Sort of a Coyote Ugly (the real one in Moscow sucks) with party music and lots of drunken people licking each others’ faces. Very entertaining with the right amount of alcohol and very easy to pull in there. Don’t think about staying sober in here, you’ll hate it.

Artel Bessonitsa/Shakti Terrace

Electronic music club that is sort of a high-end place with an underground clientele and located between the teenager clubs Icon and Gipsy. Very good music but a bit all over the place with their vibe and their branding. You can swoop almost any type of girl here from high-heeled beauty to coked-up hipsters, provided they’re not too sober.

Afterparty: if by 5AM  you haven’t pulled, it’s time to move here.

Best afterparty spot in terms of trying to get girls. Pretty much no one is sober in there and savage gorilla game goes a long way. Lots of very hot and slutty-looking girls but it can be hard to tell apart who is looking for dick and who is just on drugs but not interested. If by 9-10am you haven’t pulled, it is probably better to surrender.

The hipster alternative for afterparties, where even more drugs are in play. Plenty of attractive girls there but you have to know how to work this type of club. A nicer atmosphere and better music but if you’re desperate to pull, you’ll probably go to Miks.

Weekday jokers: if you’re on the hunt for some sexy Russian girls during the week, here are two tips to make your life easier.

Chesterfield

Ladies night on Wednesdays means this place gets pretty packed with smashed teenagers and 6s and 7s. Don’t pull out the three-piece suit in here because it’s a “simpler” crowd. Definitely your best shot on Wednesdays.

If you haven’t pulled at Chesterfield, you can throw a Hail Mary and hit up Garage’s Black Music Wednesdays. Fills up really late but there are some cute Black Music groupies in here. Very small club. Thursday through Saturday they do afterparties and you have an excellent shot and swooping girls that are probably high.

Shishas Sferum

This is pretty much your only shot on Mondays and Tuesdays because they offer free or almost free drinks for women. A fairly low-class club where you should watch your drinks. As always the case in Moscow, there will be cute girls here on any day of the week but it’s nowhere near as good as on the weekend.

una travel bar

In a nutshell, that is all you need to know about where to meet Moscow girls in nightlife. There are tons of options, and it all depends on what best fits your style, based on the type of girls that you’re looking for.

36 Hours in San Juan, Puerto Rico

By Luisita Lopez Torregrosa April 4, 2024

People stand on a pile of rocks by a seashore. The sky is orange and many palm trees are visible at a distant shore.

By Luisita Lopez Torregrosa Photographs by Scott McIntyre

Luisita Lopez Torregrosa was born in Puerto Rico and has written a memoir recalling her childhood on the island.

There’s new optimism in this Caribbean capital. Tourists are coming in record numbers, and the city is recovering the energy it lost after the devastation of hurricanes Maria and Irma in 2017; the emigration of tens of thousands to the mainland; a bankrupt economy; and the pandemic. In Old San Juan, the 500-year-old colonial enclave of pastel-colored architecture and ancient forts, and beyond, eclectic restaurants, experimental art and celebrated gritty bars like La Factoría are firing up the Puerto Rican spirit. Calle Cerra, a street in the former working-class barrio of Santurce, is now the epicenter of the island’s public art movement, featuring giant murals alongside a lively nightlife scene where you can join in on the chinchorreo, a local term for bar hopping and street dancing.

Recommendations

  • Galería Botello , housed in a 350-year-old mansion in Old San Juan, shows paintings, prints, ceramics and a collection of Puerto Rican santos, hand-carved wooden figures, by the Galician artist Ángel Botello.
  • Cocina al Fondo , with a James Beard Award-winning chef, reconstructs Puerto Rican cuisine, but remains loyal to the traditions of the island.
  • Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico has the island’s most important collection of paintings, sculptures and carvings by Puerto Rican and Caribbean artists.
  • Calle Cerra is the street that is the epicenter of Puerto Rican urban public art and a hot nightlife destination. It is also the site of the annual street art festival Santurce Es Ley (Santurce Is Law) in May.
  • Paseo de la Princesa is a bayside promenade in Old San Juan with fountains and sculptures like Fuente Raices (Roots Fountain), which represents the ancestral roots of Puerto Rican identity: Spanish, African and Taino.
  • Castillo San Felipe del Morro , one of the largest fortifications built by Spain in the Caribbean, has six levels of barracks, dungeons and storerooms. Kite-flying on the fort’s lawn is free.
  • Parque del Indio , off Ashford Avenue in the Condado neighborhood, is a refuge from the crowds with a pristine beach, kitesurfing and games of pickleball and volleyball.
  • Marmalade , arguably the best restaurant in San Juan, is reinventing local dishes, injecting Japanese, French and Moroccan accents.
  • Bodegas Compostela is a classic Spanish restaurant with outstanding wines, lamb chops, crisp suckling pig and chocolate soufflé.
  • Primitivo , an intimate tapas bar, specializes in nigiri and crudo appetizers and specialty cocktails like silky Negronis.
  • Pio Pio , a chic wine bar across Plaza de Armas in Old San Juan, offers quiet sophistication, luxurious bites and special wines and cocktails.
  • La Casita Blanca , a local favorite, is rooted in traditional Puerto Rican dishes served in a homey and friendly atmosphere.
  • La Factoría is a popular nightspot in Old San Juan that houses six bars connected by dark passageways.
  • Botánico is a bar and restaurant with Central American dishes and an open-air dance floor.
  • Esquina Watusi is an iconic dive bar that often hosts the crazy chinchorreo, a street dancing-and-drinking scene.
  • Puerto Rican Art and Crafts stocks acrylic paintings, ceramics and vejigantes, folkloric masks that resemble the faces of colorful demons.
  • Avenida Ashford , in Condado, is San Juan’s shopping and tourist gold coast, from Cartier to boutiques like Wild Side , in the hotel Condado Vanderbilt, where you may find exclusive handmade gold and silver jewelry by the local artist María Blondet.
  • Calle Loiza , in Santurce, is lined with shops carrying locally made accessories, bags and clothing. Don’t miss the free sidewalk used-book library.
  • The Condado Vanderbilt sweeps you in with an open view of the ocean from its opulent pink marble Art Deco lobby. Opened in 1919, the hotel was renovated and reopened in 2014. It is still San Juan’s premier hotel. Rooms in April start at $651.
  • O :LV Fifty-Five , a design marvel with a black-and-white marble Art Deco lobby, features a romantic rooftop with a plunge pool and soaring views of the Condado Lagoon and the skylines of Condado and Miramar. Adults only. Rooms start at $449.
  • El Convento , a bright yellow Spanish colonial landmark in Old San Juan, has a serene courtyard and beautiful 17th-century arched doorways and beamed ceilings. Rooms start at $278.
  • For short-term rentals , search in the neighborhoods of Old San Juan, Condado, Santurce and Miramar.
  • Old San Juan, Condado, Miramar and Santurce are clustered within 15 minutes of one another by car, depending on traffic. Taxis prefer cash. Many won’t take credit cards. The car ride from Old San Juan to Santurce runs $18 to $25. Ride-hailing apps like Uber and rental cars are easily available. Public transportation is subpar .

People stand in the narrow entrance of a turret in an old-looking stone wall that overlooks ocean.

Castillo San Felipe del Morro

Old San Juan is easily walkable. Start at the Paseo de la Princesa , a promenade with fountains and sculptures that runs along San Juan Bay and the city’s fortress walls. It goes by La Fortaleza , the 16th-century governor’s mansion, and comes close to the Catedral de San Juan Bautista , where it is said the bones of Juan Ponce de León, the Spanish conquistador who became Puerto Rico’s first governor, are buried. The stroll ends on Punta del Morro, a waterfront path that culminates at the bottom of the Castillo San Felipe del Morro , also known as El Morro, a 16th-century fortress. It still has some original cannons facing the Atlantic. Entry, $10; two-and-a-half-hour tours , $49. Or just relax on the expansive green lawn where kite-flying is popular.

From El Morro, descend the single-file sidewalks on Calle del Cristo, with its galleries, bars and outdoor cafes. Take a brief break inside El Convento hotel’s serene courtyard, or on a tree-shaded bench at the intersecting Calle Caleta. Continue down Cristo to Galería Botello , a free museum in a 350-year-old house dedicated to Ángel Botello, the Galician artist who came to San Juan in the 1950s and was known as the “Caribbean Gauguin” for his paintings of Haitian women. Botello prints run $50 to $125, and his santos, carved wooden figures, sell for $500 to $3,000. Nearby, the Puerto Rican Art and Crafts stocks acrylic paintings, ceramics and vejigantes, folkloric masks that resemble the faces of colorful demons, sporting horns. Masks from $15 to $44.

People drink at a bar that is illuminated by a pink neon side that reads "Pio Pio."

Across Plaza de Armas, the chic wine bar Pio Pio , a secluded space that declares its name with a Barbie-pink sign over the bar, has luxury plates like lobster rolls with sturgeon caviar ($32), unusual wines (including Llopart Corpinnat Rose, an organic sparkling rose from Catalunya, Spain, $14 a glass), and cocktails like a vodka martini that hits the spot with a dash of orange bitters ($17).

A dish served in a white tagine that is garnished with leaves and pomegranate seeds.

By this time, the celebrated bar La Factoría , inside a century-old building, already has a line down the sidewalk. It’s worth waiting to enjoy the signature Lavender Mule (ginger tea, vodka, lavender and citrus; $12.80) in the bar’s standing-room-only scruffy main room or one of its smaller drinking dens, reached via dark passageways. Then stroll downhill to Marmalade , whose pale rooms of arches and alcoves evoke Moorish Andalusia. The ahi tuna tartare, seasoned with harissa (North African chile paste), and the bite-size pieces of paella served like sushi rolls are memorable. Leave room for the Choco-L8, eight flavors of local organic chocolate with hazelnut accents. Five courses (each course has eight to 10 choices), $135. Wine pairings, $79 per person. Reservations recommended.

A couple dances under red lights at a bar while other people drink or watch.

People dance to salsa music at La Factoría.

The sun deck at the Condado Vanderbilt hotel

Enjoy an espresso ($1.50) with a fresh mallorca pastry (a spiral sweet bun; $3.50) at Sobao , an indoor-outdoor cafe at the AC Hotel by Marriott, then walk along Avenida Ashford until you reach a small park called Ventanas al Mar (Windows to the Sea), which has a path that leads to the beach. It is packed, mainly with hotel guests, but anyone may rent a chair for $5 and an umbrella for $10. (All beaches in Puerto Rico are public, even those claimed by hotels.) In the lobby of the Condado Vanderbilt hotel next door check out Wild Side , a boutique that carries fine beachwear and sculptural jewelry in gold and silver by the Puerto Rican artist María Blondet .

The Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico , in a neo-Classical building in Santurce, a center of the arts and nightlife, exhibits the major works of artists from different generations, periods and media (entry, $12). Absorb the haunting self-portrait “Azabache,” by the Puerto Rican painter Arnaldo Roche Rabell. Walk to another hall to find “No Crying in the Barber Shop,” a room-size installation depicting a Bronx barbershop, by the Puerto Rican artist Pepon Osorio, exploring the Latino culture’s machismo. Before leaving the museum, visit the quiet sculpture garden and stop by La Tienda, the museum shop, which stocks locally made works like the brightly colored tiles depicting a still life of red flowers, by Susana López Castells ($40).

The exterior of a building with a gold front door. A sign that is decorated with a glass of red wine reads "Bodegas Compostela."

Bodegas Compostela , in the Condado neighborhood, is a fixture among San Juan’s high-end restaurants, with a classic, understated dining room favored for family gatherings, birthdays and business lunches. Start with the Galician-style octopus, cooked with olive oil, paprika and potatoes ($23.95), and follow it with the roast suckling pig, with crackling skin and juicy meat ($74.95), and a rich chocolate soufflé ($15.95) for dessert. If all that seems too much, order the fresh and light lobster salad ($42.95). Compostela is also known for its fine wines. Try Attis, an albariño from Spain, $51.95 a bottle. Reservations recommended.

Calle Cerra , not long ago a street of rundown buildings and abandoned shops, is now a hotbed of nightlife and the center of the island’s urban art movement. Stroll to take in the street art, much of it exploring political and social issues. An imposing mural painted on a water tower shows a boy carrying a glacier on his back while the ice melts around him. A building-wide mural of three skeletons sinking in the sea symbolizes colonialism and slavery. At the end of one block, a pinkish high-rise, covered from ground to roof with graffiti, murals, swirls and scrawls, looks abandoned. People live in it. At the top of the strip, take a break at Café con Cé with an iced latte ($4.50) and a vegan pastry ($4).

A white plate that holds meat, rice molded into a half-sphere and slices of yellow plantain.

Dine in the open patio at Cocina al Fondo , a restaurant in Santurce, whose chef, Natalia Vallejo, last year became the first Puerto Rican to win a 2023 James Beard Award for Best Chef: South. Try traditional favorites like pastelillos de calabaza (pumpkin fritters, $15) and jarrete de cerdo al caldero (ham hock with rice and beans and ripe plantain; $42), familiar dishes made with a local, farm-to-table ethos. Reservations recommended.

A person stands behind a bar peeling an orange. Glassware is suspended upside-down above the bar.

After dinner at Cocina al Fondo, wander back to Calle Cerra, which draws bar-hoppers to its cocktail clubs and salons until the wee hours. Young crowds gather at Botánico , where a giant mural of a face overlooks an open-air dance floor. Farther down the street, where chickens roam free and an old church stands on a corner, are several more bars, including Machete , Graziani and Galeria , and the crazy chinchorreo — what locals call the street dancing-and-drinking scene — is often centered on Esquina Watusi , an iconic dive bar. After the hubbub of Cerra, walk or take a taxi to the secluded tapas bar Primitivo , in the Miramar neighborhood nearby. Sample the nigiri, a slice of tuna set over a tiny alcapurria fritter, a Puerto Rican favorite ($14), and sip a silky Negroni ($15).

People walk down the sidewalks of a cobblestone street that is illuminated in red and purple at night.

People walk down a street in Old San Juan, the colonial enclave of pastel-colored architecture and ancient forts.

A person sits on a beach chair under a wide orange umbrella on a sandy shore. Small waves crash in the ocean in front of them, and two people in bathing suits walk by.

A beach near Parque del Indio

Parque del Indio , in Condado, is a refuge, a neighborhood beach park on Avenida Ashford in Condado at Calle C.F. Krug. It’s a favorite of children, dog walkers, pickleball and volleyball players. Rent a chair ($5) and an umbrella ($10) and watch the waves, read a book, or take a long walk on a beach that goes on for miles, along seafront homes, informal grills and beachside guesthouses.

Three people sit at a restaurant table with a floral patterned table cloth. There is a display cabinet in the restaurant with many knick-knacks.

Everyone in San Juan knows La Casita Blanca , one of the city’s most popular home-style restaurants. It is so popular that it won’t take reservations. Guests wait chatting in line on the sidewalk along the restaurant, which is in a modest white house with a facade draped in flowers, on a busy corner of the densely congested Santurce, where traffic is bumper to bumper. Every day the restaurant posts 10 to 12 dishes on a blackboard. The biftec encebollado (well-done filet cooked with onions, $18.95) is a favorite. Another standby, mofongo (mashed plantains, $5.95) and the arepas con bacalao (cod fritters, $12.95) seem unchanged over the decades. And the friendly staff waves goodbye with smiles and hugs, like family.

De Una Travel

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

Small restaurant, looking more like a cafeteria for the first impresion. Everyone will find something interesting in the menu. Some vegetarian options as well (we had great eggplant). The best I will remember for long were sauces for lomo and chicken. You can taste both... on one plate, perfect choice for meet eaters. I’m in love! Greta and healthy herbal tee. Be smart and choose the one you like cause the „casa” one os with panela which is not our favourite! More

Muchas gracias por visitarnos y por calificarnos bien, lo agradecemos y nos motiva a hacer cada día un gran trabajo....

More

Muchas gracias por visitarnos

More

Fantastic ambience and freshly created food by wonderful staff. This was a great find and truly the BEST meal we have had in Bogota.

Muchas gracias por visitarnos! Tu comentario nos anima a dar lo mejor cada día ✨

More

Thank you very much for your visit! the family of De Una Travel Bar awaits you the next time!

Visited this place on a Saturday afternoon. Great food, drinks and atmosphere. Service was very nice as well. We recommend highly!

Muchas Gracias por visitarnos, siempre dispuestos a brindar el mejor servicio y los mejores productos. Vuelvan pronto !

The 2 for 1 is a 4 ounce drink. Not a 4 ounce pour of alcohol - 4 ounces of caipirinha. They left our drinks behind the bar for 15 mins before serving to us. More

More

This diagram shows what happens during a total solar eclipse

  • A total solar eclipse will be visible from Texas to Maine on Monday.
  • This cosmic event occurs when the Earth, sun, and moon align perfectly.
  • One diagram shows how a total solar eclipse works, and why it darkens the sky in the middle of the day.

A total solar eclipse will turn afternoon skies dark from Texas to Maine on Monday.

During the eclipse, the moon will cross between the Earth and the sun, completely blocking out the sun's light. If you're in the moon's shadow, the sky will go dark for about three to four minutes, depending on your location.

It's the climax of a cosmic dance between our planet , the moon, and the sun.

What causes a total solar eclipse

During a total solar eclipse, three key conditions happen at the same time: The moon is in the "new moon" phase; the moon crosses the plane of the Earth's orbit ; and the moon is at its closest point to Earth in its orbit.

When those conditions are just right, the Earth, sun, and moon line up. This diagram shows how that looks:

Then, if you're in the path of totality — which is basically the center of the moon's shadow, called the umbra — the moon appears to obscure the sun.

If you're in the penumbra — the outer region of the moon's shadow — you'll see a partial solar eclipse , where the moon appears to partially overlap the sun.

A total solar eclipse happens somewhere on Earth about every 18 months on average. It's rare for one to occur in any single place, though, because of the complex movements of the Earth and moon.

The moon orbits Earth every 29.5 days, while Earth has its own orbit around the sun. The moon's orbit is tilted about five degrees, which is large enough to keep its shadow off the Earth and the Earth's shadow off the moon most of the time.

There are two points — called nodes — where the moon's orbit crosses the Earth's plane. In the diagram above, the moon is lined up on a node.

Related stories

The moon aligns with the nodes and the sun about twice per year, which is how we get eclipses. A solar eclipse happens when the moon is between the Earth and sun. A lunar eclipse happens when the moon is on the other side of the Earth, farthest from the sun.

What the total solar eclipse will look like

In the path of totality on Monday, where the moon's umbra falls over Earth, the total solar eclipse will have 10 distinct phases , each with different amounts of the sun visible from the ground.

The phenomenon kicks off with what's called first contact, when the moon starts to pass across the sun. After about an hour, the moon will almost completely mask the sun, and you'll start to see a bright light radiate out of the sliver of remaining sun, known as the "diamond ring."

Then the moon will fully eclipse the sun, turning the sky dark in the middle of the day.

During totality only the sun's outermost atmosphere, called the corona, will be visible glowing around the dark disc of the moon.

After that, the moon will continue to travel across the sky to form another crescent. The eclipse ends when the moon ceases to cover the sun.

Types of solar eclipses

There are three types of solar eclipses .

Total solar eclipses, like this one, occur when the moon appears to completely cover the sun. If the moon only somewhat covers the sun, that's a partial eclipse . Many people who are near the path of totality, but not in it, on Monday will see a partial eclipse.

The third type, an annular eclipse , occurs when the moon is too far from Earth to fully block out the sun from our perspective. The outer edge of the sun remains visible as a bright ring around the moon.

A total solar eclipse is considered the most spectacular. Globally, only about a third of all solar eclipses are total.

The next total solar eclipse in the contiguous US will be in 2044.

How to watch the eclipse

If you plan to watch the eclipse, make sure you are wearing ISO-certified eclipse glasses . These are 1,000 times darker than regular sunglasses. Without them, staring at the sun could damage your eyes.

The only safe time to look at the eclipse without glasses is during totality.
