Tallebudgera Creek

Tallebudgera

Everyone knows the special location where Tallebudgera Creek flows into the ocean - it's one of the most spectacular swimming spots on the Gold Coast. But follow the creek inland and it will lead you to the semi-rural suburb of Tallebudgera. Drive down winding roads through rolling green acreage, farm land and rainforest to discover pretty little creekside parks that make the perfect picnic spot. Keep going and you'll find yourself in the neighbouring 'Tally Valley' as the locals know it, which borders Springbrook National Park.

Gwinganna Lifestyle Retreat is perched atop a forested ridge in this picturesque location. The award-winning eco retreat offers a transformative experience through immersive health and wellness programs featuring exquisite spa treatments, premium accommodation, mindfulness practices and nourishing, organic meals. Other accommodation  in the area include farmstays and B&Bs.

For golfers, Tallebudgera offers three golf courses and a driving range, plus some sprawling, shady parks to enjoy nature walks. Schuster Park has a wonderful playground, picnic tables and BBQ facilities on  the creek, while Eddie Kornhauser Recreational Reserve is a favourite for dog owners. With all the natural bushland, Tallebudgera is a haven for native wildlife including an abundance of bird life. The heritage-listed Tallebudgera Post Office opened in 1878 when the area was mainly banana and dairy farms. It’s still standing on Trees Road and is one of the oldest surviving buildings on the Gold Coast. And if you’re wondering where the name comes from, it’s thought Tallebudgera is derived from a word in the language of the indigenous Kombumerri people, meaning 'good fish'.

Lower Tallebudgera Creek restoration

  • Project type Ocean, beaches & waterways
  • Project value $611,091
  • Project schedule 2023 – 2024

tallebudgera-creek-reserve-restoration-thumbnail.png

We are restoring 4 public reserves along Lower Tallebudgera Creek after flooding caused significant damage in 2021-22.

The heavy rainfall during the 2021-22 floods resulted in high water flow in the creek, transporting a significant amount of sediment and other material downstream. The flood water scoured the creek bed, severely eroded the creek banks and formed large sediment bars. Large sediment plumes entered the creek estuary and extended north along Burleigh Beach. The sediment plumes degraded water quality and aquatic habitats, and limited recreational activities in the area.

Our post-flood assessment of Tallebudgera Creek and review of catchment management plans identified approximately 4km of the creek needing restoration.

Restoration sites

  • Tallebudgera Creek Reserve
  • Linear Reserve
  • Bodalla Park
  • Robinson Park

We will restore and enhance Tallebudgera Creek’s riparian corridor (vegetation along creek banks) and palustrine (non-tidal) wetlands through activities such as:

  • removing environmental weeds
  • revegetating vulnerable areas with native plant species
  • revegetating the creek bank in stages, prioritising flood-prone areas so they have time to re establish before the next flood.

Restoring and protecting riparian vegetation will increase Tallebudgera Creek's flood resilience by stabilising the creek banks.

We will be planting approximately 90,000 plants over the 4 public reserves across 10 hectares. The plantings will help protect and rebuild the banks by capturing sediment from upstream and protecting against erosion.

The project will also improve:

  • flood mitigation
  • water quality
  • in-stream habitat
  • native flora and fauna species diversity
  • outdoor recreation, tourism and visual amenity.

Monitoring progress

Photos and drone imagery will be taken of the sites at the beginning and end of the project. Photo monitoring will then occur every 5 years to identify and monitor changes over time.

Area of works

Assistance provided through the jointly funded Commonwealth-state Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
