Puerto Limon cruise terminal is located only 250 m from the city center, making it an ideal location for exploring the downtown area on foot. A map displayed at the port exit can help you navigate with ease.

While Puerto Limon primarily serves as a commercial port for the export of bananas and coffee, it also offers a warm welcome to cruise ship passengers with its convenient facilities and welcoming atmosphere. An air-conditioned seating area, free wi-fi, tour vendors, and a taxi stand are available within the terminal.

At the exit of the terminal area, a lovely craft and souvenir market awaits you with a wide range of authentic handicrafts, souvenirs, and local specialties. You can often negotiate the prices and US dollars are widely accepted.

A beach is not available within walking distance from the port, but you can reach Playa Bonita, one of the nearest and most beautiful beaches – in less than a 15-minute drive.

7 Major Ports in Costa Rica

The small Central American country of Costa Rica is surrounded by the Caribbean sea on its eastern side and the Pacific Ocean on its western border. It has a tropical climate and was known for its banana plantations during the colonial era. While the country is still known for its agro-based products, it has diversified its economy.

Today, it has a stable financial sector, manufacturing and pharmaceutical industries. It is a developing country with appreciable levels of human development when compared with other Latin American nations. Costa Rica also boasts an educated and highly-skilled labour force leading to the growth of its services sector.

Tourism also contributes immensely to the nation’s GDP as the government operates many cruise ports and marinas. Costa Rica is self-sufficient in terms of food requirements and imports refined petroleum, medical instruments, vehicles and heavy machinery from the United States, China, Japan and Mexico.

Given its strategic location, it has a strong commercial shipping sector. Let us explore the 7 major ports of Costa Rica and their remarkable features.

1. Port of Caldera

Caldera Port is situated in the Gulf of Nicoya on the Pacific Coast and is the premier port of the country, handling more than half of its international maritime trade. Lying in the Puntarenas province, the port city is a small town close to many tourist attractions in the Nicoya peninsula. The port incorporates an industrial complex for accommodating cargo ships and cruise liners.

It is just two hours drive from the capital city of San Jose and is connected to the interiors through the national railway line, transporting seafood, especially tuna, fruits, general consumer goods, iron and vehicles throughout the country. It mainly serves Puntarenas, Carthage, Heredia, Alajuela, San Jose and has trade links with the United States, African and Asian countries.

It is also a major container port and has facilities for dealing with shipments of conventional cargo, RORO and solid bulk. More than 200 ships carrying 2,180,630 tonnes of cargo visit the port annually.

Port History

Costa Rica was founded by Christopher Colombus when he reached its Atlantic Coast in 1502. He called it the Rich Coast as he believed it to be the site of great wealth and riches. Soon after, colonisation began forcing native farmers to leave their lands.

The port of Caldera existed since the late 15th century, however, it was expanded after 1981. In 2002, modernization efforts began at the harbour, ultimately transforming Caldera into the main entry and exit point of goods in Costa Rica.

Port Information

Caldera has an expansive anchorage area with sufficient water depths. The entrance channel is approximately 13 metres deep but it requires regular dredging due to the frequent accumulation of sand and mud. It has two breakwaters, each 300 metres long which offer protection from the strong winds and tides coming from the west and the southwest.

The port covers 240,000 square metres of land area and has four wharves with a total quay length of 590 m. Berth 1 is 210 m long and has an 11 m draft for handling bulk containers while Berth 2 is a container berth covering 150 m, capable of accommodating cargo carriers with a draft of 10 m. The third wharf covers 130 m and receives general cargo vessels with a maximum draft of 7.5 m. Bulk grain is loaded on the fourth berth equipped with a grain conveyor belt system.

The storage terminal houses 8 warehouses, 3 open yards for storing empty containers and loose cargo and 2 administrative buildings. The storage yards span 70,000 m2 whereas the warehouses cover 13,000 m2 of ground area.

Cruise Terminal

The Caldera port has a small passenger terminal for receiving cruise ships and passenger vessels. Fully air-conditioned, it contains 3 restrooms, a waiting room, public phones, a help desk and a few local shops. Two ships can be accommodated simultaneously on its 390 m long wharf.

2. Port of Limon

Officially known as the Hernon Garron Salazar Terminal, Puerto Limon lies on the northeast Atlantic coast of Costa Rica and is the largest port in the country. It is strategically positioned near the Panama Canal, the Gulf of Mexico and the southern coast of the US.

A Free Trade Zone is adjacent to the port along with facilities offering minor ship repair and maintenance, bunkering and freshwater services. The port handles container ships , general cargo vessels and also cruise ships. It has RORO facilities but still relies on slings and pallets for loading and unloading cargo. Vessels with an LOA of 300 m, a 40 m beam and a maximum weight of 30,000 DWT can be docked at the harbour.

Major exports comprise Bananas, oranges and other citrus fruits, vegetables, coffee and textiles. It imports iron, cardboard, fertilisers, chemical products, fuels and petroleum. Limon port handles around 2,490 vessels, 9,930,000 tonnes of cargo, 840,000 TEU and 200,000 passengers annually.

The port was opened in 1852 during the Presidentship of Juan R. Mora Porras. However, it was connected to San Jose and other parts of the country by 1898, with the establishment of the Atlantic railway line.

The Costa Rican oil refinery operated a wharf for importing crude oil and petroleum in 1981, which was later converted to a multipurpose berth. The container terminal opened the same year, covering 8 hectares of land area, comprising a 450 m long pier. It was enlarged in 2002 by six hectares for storing empty containers. A cruise terminal was opened to handle the influx of international travellers visiting the country for its rich heritage and natural scenic beauty. The port has a storage area covering 4 hectares with a storage capacity of 2000 TEUs and 120 reefer connections for handling refrigerated cargo.

3. Port of Moin

A subsidiary facility of Limon port, the Moin harbour lies on an artificial island off the Atlantic coast of Costa Rica. It has a container terminal, an oil refinery and a tanker jetty. It was refurbished in 2018 with the coming of Mediterranean Shipping Company, a transportation and logistics services provider. The Company opened new shipping routes between Costa Rica and North Europe by establishing a direct call from the Moin port terminal. This allowed the port to handle increased volumes of cargo and bigger container ships in the past two years.

Operated by APM Terminals, the port allows the transportation of goods on transatlantic trade routes going to the European and Southeast Asian markets by eliminating the need for transhipment.

The 1 billion US dollar port project covers 40 hectares of land area. It has a 650 m long wharf and a container storage yard with a capacity for 26,000 TEUs and 3800 reefer connections since the country is the world’s biggest exporter of pineapples and third largest distributor of bananas.

Container terminal

The Moín Container Terminal was opened in February 2019 and is one of the most modern facilities in the Latin American region. The terminal has an annual handling capacity of 1.2 million TEUs and covers about 38 hectares. It has an 18 m deep access channel and a 450 m long berth with a 15 m draft. It is equipped with 28 rubber-tired gantry cranes, 6 super-post Panamax gantry cranes, 4 grabs and 13 port trucks.

Presently, it can accommodate 8500 TEU container ships however after the completion of the second phase, it would handle the largest New Panamax ships with a 13,000 TEU carrying capacity. The terminal would be expanded by 40 hectares for handling an additional 1.5 million TEUs. The authorities also plan to develop it as an important logistics hub that could lead to regional socio-economic growth by birthing many employment opportunities.

4. Port of Puntarenas

The beautiful cruise port of Puntarenas receives passenger ships and offers exciting shore excursions. It is located close to the Caldera port and includes a 560 m long pier with a depth of 12.5 m. A small terminal equipped with basic amenities, it is close to the city centre. The port town is an important commercial hub but is gradually becoming a popular tourist destination known for its beaches, national parks and natural islands offering a perfect weekend getaway.

Just outside the cruise port is a crafts market adorned with the country’s famous coconut crafts, freshly ground coffee and wooden flutes made by local artists. On the right side is the black beach lined with wooden huts and restaurants offering traditional delicacies like tortillas, corn pancakes, black beans and pork belly.

The port city houses many ecological sites such as the Monteverde Cloud Forest, the Poas Volcano National Park and the La Luisa coffee plantation. Tourists can sail to the island of Isla San Lucas, a prison turned biosphere reserve famous for friendly dolphins. One can also opt for zip lining, hiking, snorkelling, cliff diving, trekking and scuba diving.

5. Port of Quepos

The well-sheltered Quepos port lies on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. It was developed as a cruise port for promoting tourism in the western part of the country and incorporates facilities for exporting bananas and seafood. Named after the native Quepoa Indians, the port city is known for its nightlife, restaurants and cafes.

Palm tree plantations are a common sight in the city’s downtown area. Palm oil processing plants and local industries are concentrated in the main town lined with local bazaars selling stone-bead jewellery, handcrafted pottery and much more. Just a few kilometres south of the port is the Manuel Antonio National Park known for its serene beaches, rainforests and hiking excursions. One can expect to spot the rare three-toed sloth and numerous species of monkeys, birds and wild plants.

Quepos Port is an ideal place for sport fishing. Tourists can hire fishing boats and catch marlin, sailfish and tuna. A few miles from the port is the Playa Espadilla beach which is great for swimming, sunbathing or just relaxing.

6. Port of Golfito

Golfito lies on the eastern coast of Golfo Dulce on the Pacific Coast, just 5 hour drive from the Juan Santamaria Airport. It is a small facility having a single pier divided into two 13 m deep berths for accommodating small ships and barges carrying woodchips. Vessels with a 195 m LOA and a 30 m beam can be easily accommodated.

It was constructed in 1939 by Costa Rica’s Banana Company which used it to ship its products to all the North American countries. A famous pleasure port, Golfito is renowned for its clean beaches, especially the Pavones beach which is perfect for surfing.

7. Terminal Punta Morales

This port terminal is situated on the southern end of Golfo de Morales, in the Chomes county, just 9 nautical miles from the cruise port of Puntarenas. The port is visited by more than 200 ships carrying 100,000 tonnes of cargo annually. A small port, it consists of a T-head jetty, a loading platform and 2 fender dolphins covering 71 m. It has a 160 m mooring dolphin and additional mooring buoys lying 300 m away from the jetty. It exports raw sugar, molasses and imports fuel and alcohol.

Fill up for the day with a traditional Costa Rican breakfast of gallo pinto , a hearty combo of rice beans flavored with spices, cilantro and onions. Later on, order up casado , a plate-style combo of rice, beans, tortillas, fried plaintains and your protein of choice — celebrate the ocean and opt for grilled fish. During your Puntarenas cruise, stop by a street vendor for a tamal , the Costa Rican classic of cornmeal and garlic wrapped in a banana leaf.

For close-by shopping options, head straight to Paseo de los Turistas, a promenade with many craft shops selling everything from locally grown coffee to leather goods. Culture & History of the Puntarenas Cruise Port

Puntarenas was discovered in the early 1600s by the Spanish, and native peoples called the area home for centuries before then. By the 1840s, coffee became Puntarenas’ biggest export. Puntarenas was once the premier port in Costa Rica before more accessible routes to Europe changed the landscape of its shipping and trade economy, particularly the cross-continental coffee trade.

While the city became less important in some ways, it by no means faded quietly. Today, Puntarenas wears its heritage as a port city proudly, a place where cruise lines and their passengers pass through on the way to other ports of call in Panama, Mexico, and beyond. Puntarenas was also Costa Rica’s primary port for a robust fishing trade, meaning its seafood is top-notch. Now the Port of Puntarenas and the Port of Caldera help accommodate the area’s shipping and cruising businesses.

Puntarenas Port Facilities & Location

While you’re in the cruise port, purchase a drink or snack to get access to the WiFi, or stay unplugged if you can. You’ll be welcomed to Costa Rica by a long walk along the pier. As you exit the pier where ships on your Puntarenas cruise will dock, you’ll see a black sand beach surrounding you and a craft market set up most days along the beachfront. You’ll probably see signature red taxis ready to scoop you up for a day’s adventure in Puntarenas.

Transportation in Puntarenas

It’s not hard to find a taxi in Puntarenas. They proliferate the city and are instantly recognizable by their red color. Try to use taxis with a yellow sign on their roofs. While on your cruise to Puntarenas, Costa Rica,  you should know taxis here must always turn on the meter. If you notice yours is not running, be sure to tell your driver to turn it on. Public transportation in Puntarenas is characterized by their intercity bus service. You can also take an hour-long ferry to the Nicoya Peninsula. Note that Sundays are the busiest days.

Shopping Near the Puntarenas Cruise Port

On your Puntarenas cruise, stop in at the craft market on the beach as you exit the pier where your cruise ship is docked. You can pick up a handmade gifts, local art from a Costa Rican vendor, or a souvenir of Puntarenas to bring home with you. Buy some Costa Rican coffee beans while you’re there. Full beans will keep their freshness longer than pre-ground, so you can bring them back home and they’ll taste just as good as when you are in Costa Rica. Other shopping can be found downtown.

Local Currency & Tipping Customs

The official currency of Costa Rica is called the colón. Colones are preferred as a method of payment, but many places will also accept US dollars (USD) and then give your change in colones. USD is generally acceptable to hotels, flights, and higher-end restaurants, however. Credit cards are typically accepted by merchants, but it’s recommended to carry enough colones with you to cover a coffee, purchase a meal, or tip a tour guide. Tipping at restaurants is usually included—10% is the norm—but if not, a tip of 10% or greater is encouraged.

Puntarenas Costa Rica is a bustling port city on the Pacific coast

The Puntarenas Costa Rica Vibes

Puntarenas, Costa Rica is not exactly a place I would suggest seeking out as a tourist destination. 

It is basically a small city that is somewhat run down and dirty, but I will say, it still has its charms.

You might find yourself here for two reasons.

1. If you visit Costa Rica by cruise, the Pacific coast cruise terminal is located here.

2. If you take the ferry to or from the Nicoya Peninsula (to go to Montezuma, Santa Teresa, Mal Pais etc.) the ferry leaves from the very tip of Puntarenas.

So, we don’t suggest spending a few nights here but we do have some great restaurant suggestions and tips for fun activities (especially for those of you looking for great day trips from the cruise ship).

Map Of Puntarenas

The city of Puntarenas is located in the Puntarenas Province (it’s confusing…I know) on the central Pacific coast of the country. 

The city juts out into the ocean as a needle-like peninsula. 

Flights to Costa Rica

The easiest way to get to Puntarenas is from the San Jose International Airport.

From here it is about 1.5 hour drive.

Driving to Puntarenas

From the San Jose Airport, it will take you about one and a half hours to drive to the city of Puntarenas. The drive is fairly easy on well-maintained highways. 

Just keep in mind that there are tolls on this road. You can pay in US dollars or Costa Rican colones. 

In total, I would say it is about $5 to $7 in tolls. Sorry, I’ve never exactly counted it out.

If you are traveling with a group of people and don’t plan on renting a car, a private shuttle is the way to go. You can all sit back and enjoy the Pacific coast scenery while a competent driver ensures you get to your destination safely.

Public Bus to Puntarenas Costa Rica

There are public buses that run to and from Puntarenas throughout the day. 

The nice thing about Puntarenas is that a lot of buses depart from here to different areas of the country. It’s a bit of a bus hub.

Anyway, we aren’t great with keeping up with the bus schedules so we suggest checking the Centro Casting website for all your bus needs. 

Transportation In Puntarenas

If you would like to just explore the downtown area of Puntarenas you can easily just walk around or hop in a taxi.

Most likely, if you are on a cruise and exit the cruise terminal there will be many people asking if you need a taxi. 

Please, make sure you take a legal taxi. You can read more about that here . Illegal taxi drivers have been known to scam tourists and majorly overchaege them. 

For trips in the surrounding area we suggest either renting a car or booking a tour.

Adobe, our favorite car rental company has an office just off of Puntarenas. They are happy to deliver your car to you for free within 12 miles of their office. 

That means you can rent your car and have it delivered to you for free at the cruise terminal if you need.

Puntarenas Ferry

If you are planning to visit the Nicoya Peninsula ( Montezuma , Santa Teresa , Mal Pais ) the best way to get here from the San Jose area of the Central Pacific coast is by taking the ferry.

The ferry terminal is located at the very tip of Puntarenas.

It is possible to book your tickets ahead of time. We suggest reading our guide to the ferry for all the details. 

Puntarenas Cruise Terminal

There are two places in which cruises come to port in the harbor. These are called Puerto Caldera and Muelle de Cruceros in Puntarenas proper.

Most likely, your ship will park at Puerto Caldera as it is the largest seaport in Costa Rica.

Caldera is located out of the city proper. This makes it easy for you to get to other areas of the country quickly but will require about a 20-minute drive if you would like to get to downtown Puntarenas. 

Both cruise terminals have bathrooms, WIFI, and pay phones.

Puntarenas Costa Rica Weather

This area follows the weather patterns of most of the rest of the Pacific coast.

You can expect dry weather and no rain from December through late April.

From May through August you will likely experience a daily afternoon rain storm, but in general, it should stay warm and sunny out.

From August until December you may have more wash-out days with heavier rains. 

Things to Do in Puntarenas Costa Rica

Explore the downtown area.

There aren’t a whole lot of shops geared towards tourists in this area, but I think that makes it charming. It’s fun to walk the downtown area and see what life is like in this small city.

Walk on the Beach

Playa Puntarenas stretches along the whole southern half of the city. It is a nice long walk. You can stop along the way for lunch and snacks.

Puntarenas Restaurants

Along the highway, before you turn into the city of Puntarenas you will see cars parked on the side of the road in front of food stands.

We suggest stopping here if you would like to try the traditional Costa Rican frozen treat called Churchill .

This consists of shaved ice, flavored syrup, powdered milk, and condensed milk.

I find it to be a bit too sweet for my liking, but it’s definitely worth a try. 

Anyway, on to the restaurants!

Isla Coco’s Bar & Grill – If you are looking for a nice dinner of fresh-caught seafood or fish, this is our choice for you. 

Matobes – They serve great pizza among other things….but I suggest going here for the pizza.

Lunarossa – Our top choice for a more elevated date night type of experience. I think it is definitely the best restaurant in Puntarenas, and a bit more high-end than the other places on this list. 

Restaurant & Marisqueria Gugas – A good spot for traditional Costa Rican meals at a very fair price. They also serve seafood. 

Puntarenas Costa Rica Hotels

I don’t really recommend staying in Puntarenas, so it was difficult to choose hotels that I would suggest. 

However, if you find yourself spending the night in Puntarenas for some reason (we’ve been in that situation due to ferry issues and a bad storm), there are a few decent options.

Hotel Mar y Mar – Comfortable hotel with a pool. Rates are very fair and breakfast is included.

Cabinas Gosen – Basic rooms but they have everything you need. The staff here is super nice and everything is kept clean. 

Fiesta Resort – This resort is not our favorite in Costa Rica, but if you want an all-inclusive place that is very budget friendly this is the spot!

Puntarenas Travel Tips

We have never had any issues, but the downtown area of Puntarenas is not known for being the safest spot in the country. Just keep an eye on your belongings and exercise some caution when possible. 

Packing for Puntarenas Costa Rica

Puntarenas is not a fancy town. Dressing in casual clothes is completely fine.

We suggest fast drying, breathable shorts and t-shirts.

Keep in mind that we are sometimes a bit concerned about security here so having a secure backpack or money belt is sometimes helpful when walking around downtown.

When the sun goes down the mosquitos can be bad, so bug spray is always good to have.

Don’t forget your rain gear if visiting during green season.

Puerto Caldera cruise port

Welcome to the Puerto Caldera cruise port guide. Puntarenas or Puerto Caldera? Some cruise itineraries are not very clear about your destination in Costa Rica. Fact is Puerto Caldera and Puntarenas are two different cruise ports approximately 20 km away from each other but in both cases Puntarenas is the nearest town of interest. Puerto Caldera – Costa Rica: your cruise ship is docked

Usually, if the cruise dock in Puntarenas is occupied, your ship will dock at Estacion de Puerto Caldera. This is a large container port about 20 km south of Puntarenas. If this is the dock where your ship will be at when visiting Costa Rica, we highly recommend you to book a shore excursion.

Walking is prohibited in cruise port Puerto Caldera

The port authorities have a strict no walking in port policy. For this reasons either the cruise ship or the port authorities will arrange a shuttle bus for you to take you from the cruise pier in Puerto Caldera to the exit of the port or into the town of Puntarenas.

Shuttle bus to exit of the port

The only way to get from your cruise ship dock to anywhere is to take transportation as walking is prohibited. This is why there is a free shuttle bus from the dock to the exit of the port. You won’t find much at the exit, but there are most of the times taxis or private vehicles there. Negotiate a price so they can tour your around. Make sure you agree upon a price before you step into the taxi. Paying in US dollars is usually no problem at all.

Shuttle bus to Puntarenas

If you are not on a shore excursions or up for a taxi tour you can alternatively also take the shuttle bus to the town of Puntarenas if your cruise line provides one. This is usually a paid shuttle, but again, this depends on your cruise line. Make sure to check with them if there is a charge for this bus. This shuttle bus is also authorised to pick you up at the cruise dock in Puerto Caldera. The drop off location is normally at downtown Puntarenas at the market and beach. Don’t expect much of Puntarenas. It is a great town if you want to do some souvenir shopping, have a swim at a basic local beach or to have some refreshments at the beach restaurants.

Because there is basically nothing to find at the port of Puerto Caldera and there is not much in the nearest town either we highly recommend you to take a shore excursion here if anywhere else. We do not want you to miss out on the beautiful things Costa Rica has to offer. Costa Rica Revisits Controversial Diquis Hydroelectric Project

Costa rica’s economic crisis prompts businesses to demand policy changes, exchange rate crisis hits costa rica’s banana sector, power outages scheduled by ice across costa rica, president chaves’ legislative address: a tale of two costa ricas, costa rica backs limon marina project to create jobs and boost tourism.

A few months ago, President Rodrigo Chaves announced a plan to build a new marina and cruise dock in the province of Limon.  The $854 million project would feature a building to serve cruise passengers, local businesses, restaurants, a handicrafts market, hotels, parking lots, and urban integration zones.

At least eleven international companies would be interested in developing this marina megaproject. Interested companies include infrastructure giants such as China Harbour Engineering Company Limited (CHEC), in charge of the Route 32 extension; also interested are Global Ports Holding Plc, one of the world’s largest cruise port operators, with an established presence in the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, and the Asia-Pacific; and Dredging, Environmental and Marine Engineering (DEME), an international group of companies specializing in the field of capital dredging and maintenance, as well as land reclamation and port infrastructure development.

In addition to these large corporations, there are other companies and consortiums, some with Costa Rican shareholding, such as Platinum World CR Sociedad Anónima, Consorcio Maritime Policy Bureau Corp, and Constructora Meco S.A.

“We are talking about a major project that would involve an investment of millions of dollars and in which Costa Rica would provide the land through Japdeva, and the investment would be private. All this investment translates into jobs and productive linkages,” said Susy Wing Ching, executive president of JAPDEVA.

The megaproject is considered strategic by the Rodrigo Chaves government to bring economic development and job opportunities to the Caribbean population. It would also boost tourism and help the recovery of Limon.

Business owners in the province, government authorities, and other experts stress the importance of generating jobs in the area to prevent people from falling into the clutches of the illicit businesses that abound in the area.

“The thousands of jobs that would be generated will solve a pressing need in a region full of a lack of opportunities and whose expectations of peace and healthy coexistence are diminishing every day. This is one of the projects with the greatest impact for Limón in the last 10 years. We ask the deputies to support the initiative and go for a public-private alliance,” mentioned Ana Matarrita, Mayor of Limon.

Is Costa Rica a Good Place for a Family Vacation?

“Costa Rica is a safe country with no army, free education, and very good healthcare,” Sheehy says. “Basically the country is an open-air classroom with tons of wildlife, nature, cultural experiences, gastronomy, and volunteerism.”

Is Costa Rica Safe for Americans?

Costa Rica is safe for everyone, including Americans, but like anywhere in the world, it’s possible to find yourself in a bad situation if you’re careless or go looking for trouble. “But if you travel with local experts, with a planned itinerary, with suppliers that have all the permissions, you will have an amazing and safe experience,” advises Sheehy. 

What Is the Cheapest Time to Go to Costa Rica?

Costa Rica has three seasons. The peak times to visit are the holiday weeks of Easter, Christmas, and the New Year. Holiday time is the most expensive of all to travel to Costa Rica. Next is high season, which is the dry season on the Pacific side of the country where most of the all-inclusive Costa Rica resorts are clustered. High Season runs from December to April.

The cheapest time to visit is low season, which is the rainy season on the Pacific side but the dry season on the Caribbean side of the country. “The low season when you can get deals and the lowest prices,” says Sheehy. “Low season runs from May to November.”

Which Part of Costa Rica Is the Best to Stay?

The best location depends on what you’re looking for in your vacation: beach or rainforest, adventure and volcanoes, or culture and food. Twenty-five percent of Costa Rica’s land is protected, and the tiny county is home to five percent the world’s plants and animals. 

“We have tons of micro climates between wetland sites, rainforest, dry forest, cloud forest, high-altitude forest,” notes Sheehy. “Name it and we have it. That’s why we have travelers that come at various times of year. Any time they visit, they can do and visit something different.”

As for Costa Rica all-inclusive resorts, however, you’ll find most of them clustered on the Pacific side of the country. 

Is Four Seasons Costa Rica All-Inclusive?

The Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo is not all-inclusive. Rates are per room, per night, and there is an additional resort fee of 12 percent of your room rate. The resort fee includes bellmen and housekeeping gratuities, transportation within the Papagayo peninsula, access to daily resort activities, and non-motorized water sports. 

However, there is a bed-and-breakfast rate at the resort that includes a daily Costa Rican buffet breakfast for two at Bahia. In addition, Four Seasons Costa Rica does offer fully-inclusive luxury estate homes on Peninsula Papagayo.

Port Cabo Rojo-Pedernales cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Cabo Rojo-Pedernales, Dominicana. Port Cabo Rojo is in Dominicana's Pedernales province. The Port is private and owned by Alcoa Corporation (1888-founded, headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania USA ). Alcoa (Aluminum Corporation of America) uses Puerto de Cabo Rojo for exporting bauxite (rock with a high aluminum content) and limestone.

The Port's cargo terminal is currently operated by Cementos Andino SA (1998-founded Colombian company) which exports cement clinker and concrete, as well as bauxite and limestone.

On June 1, 2022, officially started the construction works on Cabo Rojo Cruise Port (~US$100 million project). The port was completed in December 2023 (Phase 1) and officially inaugurated on January 4, 2024. The project includes building two docking facilities/piers, a modern passenger terminal, a premium yacht marina, a large water park.

When fully completed, Cabo Rojo Cruise Port has projected annual capacity to receive/handle up to 1 million cruise tourists.

The project's Phase I (June 2022 thru December 2023) included building two piers and the cruise terminal. Phase II (planned for completion in 2024-Q2) includes the expansion of the terminal, adding two more cruise piers and a pier dedicated to fishing boats.

The cruise port's annual passenger capacity is around 1 million, targeting predominantly international tourists.

Cabo Rojo cruise port is managed by APORDOM (Dominican Port Authority) and ITM Group (based in Cancun Mexico ). ITM also operates the cruise ports Costa Maya (Yucatan, Quintana Roo Mexico) and Taino Bay/Puerto Plata (Dominicana) . According to ITM, Cabo Rojo's cruise shipping activities could generate annually between US$120-150 million.

Cabo Rojo cruise port project's cost was estimated at ~RD$ 7,1 billion (Dominican pesos/~USD 126 million) and the entire money (a private investment) was provided via a loan from Banco Central de la Republica Dominicana (the country's Central Bank). Reportedly, the project was expected to generate 5000+ local jobs (direct and indirect) thus boosting Pedernales province's economy.

In 2022, Dominican Republic's investments in the Pedernales region were ~US$80-90M, and an additional ~US$150-200M was invested in 2023. The Government's RD$ 15B (~USD 270M) development plan included the construction of three coastal hotels near the cruise port (combined capacity 1600 rooms), building six more hotels, an advanced wastewater treatment plant, supporting infrastructure, internal roads, as well as repairs and expansion of the Barahona Enriquillo Coastal Highway and a new airport (cost ~US$70M).

In February 2023, NCL-Norwegian Cruise Line included Cabo Rojo Pedernales in its 2024 schedule as a new Caribbean destination. NCL's itineraries that visited Cabo Rojo in 2024 (January, March, April) were roundtrips from La Romana (Dominicana) and scheduled for the Norwegian Sky ship . In January 2025 NCL's ship Norwegian Jewel was also listed in Cabo Rojo Port's schedule. Norwegian Sky's 14-day " Panama Canal : Costa Rica and the Dominican Republic" itinerary (Jan 3-17) was a roundtrip from Tampa Florida USA . The Panama Canal segment was a partial transit ( Gatun Lake cruising ).

In 2023, the Dominican Republic also made investments in upgrades to Port Samana , which is often visited by ships of NCL-Norwegian and RCI-Royal Caribbean International .

The road distance from Cabo Rojo Port to Pedernales City is approx 20 km / 12 mi. Pedernales is on the Dominicana-Haiti border and has a border crossing to Anse-a-Pitres. The municipality's economy is based on agriculture (beans, coffee), beef cattle and goats, mining (bauxite), commercial fishing (lobster, lambi) and domestic tourism. The most visited tourist destinations are Bahia de las Aguilas Beach and Sierra de Bahoruco National Park, both a short distance from Pedernales.

Cabo Rojo Airport is approx 16 km / 10 mi southeast of Pedernales City (population around 30,000). The airport serves only domestic flights.

Cabo Rojo (translated Cape Red) signifies both the cape and the beach (Playa Cabo Rojo). This part of Dominicana is known for its bauxite mines, pristine turquoise waters and scenic white-sand beaches, the most popular of which are Cabo Rojo and Bahia de las Aguilas (8-km/5-mi long beach).

Dominican Republic's Cabo Rojo has namesakes in Mexico's Veracruz state (a sand barrier approx 55 km / 34 mi south of Tampico, Tamaulipas, that encloses Laguna de Tamiahua) and Puerto Rico (a city and municipality part of the San German-Cabo Rojo metro area).

When inaugurated (Dec 2023), Puerto Cabo Rojo will have only one floating pier plus several anchorage areas.

When fully completed, the cruise port will have one large concrete piers with four docks/berthing positions (two on each pier) with capacity to accommodate four large ships simultaneously. Another fixed pier will serve fishing vessels.

Cruise Terminal's facilities include a passenger reception hall, aquapark, interactive play zone, outdoor playgrounds for kids, recreational and commercial facilities (including entertainment venues, shops, wellness complex), a large-capacity restaurant, a boutique hotel and an exclusive beach area.

Cabo Rojo's first cruise ship is currently scheduled to dock on December 14th (2023).

Travelers Can Explore Four Different Regions With Holland America Line’s 2024-2025 West Coast Cruises

Ships set sail for Hawaii, Mexico, Pacific Coast and through the Panama Canal with convenient roundtrip departures from San Diego and Vancouver

Seattle, Wash., April 10, 2023  — Holland America Line has opened cruise bookings for its 2024-2025 West Coast season from San Diego, California, and Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Sailings from these two North American homeports allow guests to see the world from their doorstep, without international air or by taking an easy flight from Canada.

Travelers can set out from the West Coast to explore the vibrant cultures of  Mexico ,  Hawaii ’s aloha spirit, the charming seaside escapes of the Pacific Coast and the famed  Panama Canal  on five ships across 42 cruises. Sailings are roundtrip from San Diego, roundtrip from Vancouver, or begin or end in either of the two ports.

“Holland America Line continues to cultivate our North America homeport cruises to offer a diverse range of destinations without the need for long-haul air,” said Beth Bodensteiner, Holland America Line’s chief commercial officer. “Our West Coast departures are a rich collection of close-to-home itineraries, and by offering the ability to book back-to-back cruises in different regions our guests can check off more of their must-do travel experiences in one vacation.”

From September 2024 through May 2025, guests can embark cruises ranging from a four-day voyage along the  Pacific Coast  to a 21-day transit of the Panama Canal. Itineraries are uniquely curated to include popular ports alongside lesser-visited locales that showcase the natural beauty, cultural diversity and rich history of each region.

This season, Holland America Line is featuring more Panama Canal Collectors’ Voyages that begin with a Hawaii cruise and expand the canal transit experience to the eastern Caribbean. Many of the other cruises also can be extended into Collectors’ Voyages to create the ultimate exploration with more economical fares than booking the cruises individually.
