Ya’qūb ibn al-Layth al-Saffār is the founder of the Saffarid dynasty . This great Iranian man, who was born in Sistan, had a great role in perpetuating the Persian language . Ya’qūb blamed whoever wrote poetry in a non-Persian language.

Saffarid dynasty can be called the first post-Islamic independent Iranian dynasty .

The tomb of Yaghub Leys Safari, the oldest part of which dates back to the Seljuk period, is located in Shah Abad village, near the city of Dezful in the province of Khuzestan.

We drive towards Susa (90km.), visiting UNESCO World Heritage site of Chogha Zanbil Ziggurat (built 1250 AD., Elamite) en-route. Susa was the winter capital of Achaemenid empire and one of the oldest cities in the world. In Susa, we visit remains of Apadana Palace , Susa Castle (built in the 19th century by the French archaeological excavation group), Susa Archaeological Museum and Tomb of Daniel (the biblical prophet). Another 35km. drive takes us to Dezful, where we visit the old Sassanid Bridge (build in the 3rd century) and water-mill on Dez river. We then visit Dezful Jameh Mosque (one of the oldest mosques in Iran), Tiznoo Historical House and Dezful Old Bazaar . On our way back to Shushtar (65km.), we visit the Seljuk-style tomb of Yaghoub Leis Saffari , who founded the first Iranian kingdom in the 9th century after Arab conquest. Yaghoub Leis is also renowned for reviving the Persian language. Our today program ends in Shushtar.

The same is located to the10 km of Dezful . The structure consists of the entrance doorway, anteroom, nocturnal area of the mosque and the mausoleum. The main entrance is flagged with ancient columns constructed of thick bricks. The nocturnal area is rectangular and the entrance to this forms the corridor of the mausoleum, which has a curved ceiling in roman style, constructed of old sculptured stones.The top portion of the doorway was plaster worked in the Eilkhani period, and the sepulchre is of wood and devoid of any inscriptions. For the first two centuries after the 7th c. Arab Invasion and Occupation of Iran a total of 130 Iranian uprisings were recorded all of which were brutally suppressed and each time lands were taken and Iranians were forced to provide arab occupiers with gold and manual labor for reparation. Yaghoub Leys Saffari (840- 879) The Great Iranian patriot was the founder of the Saffari d ynasty in Sistan and the Hero who restored many of the most revered Iranian traditions. It was during his rule that Persian language was re-introduced as the official language of Iran ending the pervasive influence of the Arabic language which was forced on our people since Iran’s first Arab occupation in the 7th century.

Yaghoub’s hostility towards the Arab Abbasid caliphs was easily evident in his attitude; as according to the Tarikh-e Sistan, Yaghub is quoted to have said:

“The Arabs and Abbasids are liars, Let no one ever trust them!”

At his deathbed, Yaghoub received the Arab Caliph’s emissary who had presented him jewels and offered him the governorship of several provinces if he surrendered to the Arabs. Severely ill, Yaghoub still responded with anger saying : “tell your ruler, I have lived all my life on bread and onions, and if I survive, only Sword will rule between the two of us, Only Sword will rule between the two of us; Iranians and the Arabs”.
