Nivea Dry Comfort Deodorant Antiperspirant Roll-On

Editor’s Pick: Nivea Dry Comfort Long Lasting Antiperspirant

TFG’s own editor found the Nivea Confidence Deodorant while she was travelling in Thailand and absolutely fell in love. It’s the “best stuff” she’s ever used, and since finding it she’s never gone back. It holds up well in humidity, doesn’t stain clothing and overall smells great.

Alex shared, “I’ve spent 9 hours stuck on the slowest, stickiest, most cramped ferry in Indonesia and still smelled fresh at the end. I’m quite a sweaty little human, so this is AWESOME!” This stick features motionsense technology and promises 48 hour protection against sweat and body odor.

But Alex isn’t the only one that loves this deodorant, TFG readers rave about how effective it is. One TFG reader simply said, “Best. Stuff. Ever.” While another shared that they were thrilled to find out they could get it in Canada. You can also find it in Europe, Asia and Latin America.

If you’re sensitive to scents, then Nuud might be the best choice for you due to the fact that it’s unscented. It’s unique in that it doesn’t actually mask your body odor, but actually prevents it. And, what makes it great for travel is that it lasts for 3 days on average.

This all natural ‘anti-odorant’ comes in a bio plastic sugarcane tube and is, totally innocent, containing no animal derived ingredients; no animal testing; is 100% vegan; no aluminum, no salts, no propellants, no mineral oils, no parabens, no artificial fragrances, and no incomprehensible chemical compounds

One TFG reader shared, “Nuud is a tiny eco friendly tube, you use a pea size for each arm. It’s made with colloidal silver so it just kills all bacteria/odor. Not an antiperspirant. But it’s amazing for packing, and lasts forever.”

Tips for Packing Deodorant

Packing your toiletries (including deodorant) does not have to be challenging! TFG readers had some great tips and tricks to share about how you can pack your products for maximum space.

TFG reader shared that to save space you can take a portion of your deodorant instead of the whole stick. One reader instructed “Take a chunk of your deodorant container, melt it in the microwave, and pour it into a smaller container. You can find empty containers on Amazon.”

If you don’t have an empty container, another reader suggests using an empty chapstick container instead.

And, if you’re working with a gel instead, another reader said that you “squeeze it out into little travel plastic screw jars. Saves sooo much space. (It’s also an eye opener to see how little there is in those giant plastic applicator bottles it normally comes in).”

These are the best travel containers !

Is Deodorant A Liquid For Air Travel TSA?

When it comes to traveling with a travel size deodorant stick, it can come in your carry on so long as it’s a solid. If you’re working with a liquid or gel, you’ll have to make sure that you take an amount that’s 3-1-1 compliant.

Do You Need a Travel Size Deodorant?

No, not at all. If you want to take a regular sized stick it’s fine, so long as it’s a solid if you’re taking it into your carry-on. However, the travel sized ones help you maximize your space.

Preparing Toiletries for Travel

You’ve packed your carry-on and everything fits perfectly. That is until you need to fit in your toiletry bag!

The Tortuga Promise

At Tortuga, our mission is to make travel easier. Our advice and recommendations are based on years of travel experience. We only recommend products that we use on our own travels.

Table of Contents

Deodorant and anti-perspirants are available worldwide, but the quality of local products varies widely. If you’re planning to pack your deodorant, instead of buy when you land, here are the best options for travel deodorants.

You know when transit stinks , but not only because of the long hours you’re spending en route? A smelly neighbor can can make a long trip feel even longer, and you, as a conscious traveler, want to avoid being that person for those in your midst.

Keep both sweat and smelly pits at bay—here are our top picks for the best travel deodorants and antiperspirants on the market, plus things to think about as you make your deodorant game-plan.

Can You Bring Deodorant On a Plane? & Other Considerations

Tsa deodorant requirements.

Finding TSA-friendly deodorant is key for carry-on only travelers (bravo!).

If you’re planning to stick with stick deodorant for your trip, almost any size can pass through TSA security. Deodorant powders, stones, and crystals are good to go, too.

If your deodorant game is more the liquid variety, you’ll need to make sure your deodorant is packaged in a container no larger than 3.4 ounces (clearly marked) and placed in a see-through bag. This is true for spray, liquid, gel, cream, pastes, and roll-on deodorants.

Aluminum-Free (yes, this matters)

I highly recommend packing an aluminum free deodorant for travel. Some deodorant use has been linked to a higher potential for cancer or alzheimer’s; while this has largely been debunked as a myth, aluminum-free deodorant still offers perks like a healthier, more natural sweat and clearer under-arm pores. You can beat odor with natural ingredients—more on this below.

Read more about this topic on the Wirecutter here .

Your Travel Destination

Americans use deodorant more than any other nationality worldwide (although Brazil is a close second). So, as a traveler who strives to be odor-free, where can you maintain your western standards? Where can you fly in and buy deodorant?

Most destinations in Europe and across Oceania are safe for access to deodorant, including brands that you’re probably familiar with. You will have a harder time getting your hands on deodorant brands you recognize in Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Of course, you can buy deodorant just about everywhere, but do you really want to use Thai deodorant? Maybe, maybe not.

Keep in mind that you’ll likely pay a higher premium for familiar Western brands in these countries, so it might make more financial sense to stock up now rather than later.

travel size unscented deodorant

Travel Size vs. Full Size Deodorant

Depending on the length of your travels—or your destination—you might consider stocking up on different deodorant sizes. Travel-sized toiletries have obvious benefits: They take up less space, are lighter-weight, and can give you a headstart in your travel destination. Since you’ll be settling in for a few days or weeks, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to scope out nearby shops or pharmacies to purchase larger toiletries if necessary.

Pick the product size that’s right for your pack, your destination (trust me, you don’t want to buy local deodorant in Guatemala), and your travel timeline!

The Best Travel-Sized Deodorant

Not only are travel-sized toiletries pretty cute (so tiny!), they can be an effective packing method if you’re tight on space. Mini-deodorants can give you a headstart if you’re traveling for an extended period of time or can cover your entire trip if its a shorter jaunt.

  • For men: Every Man Jack Activated Charcoal Deodorant , $6
  • For women : Native Coconut & Vanilla Mini , $3

The Best Full Size Deodorant

Most full-sized stick deodorants weigh between 3-4oz, so unless you’re hyper-concerned about packweight, shaving the 2 ounces off for a travel-sized might not seem worth it.

  • For men: Every Man Jack Sandalwood Deodorant , $6
  • For women : Secret Clinical Strength Antiperspirant Deodorant , $8

Stones vs. Sprays vs. Liquids

The personal care market is flush with alternatives to a typical deodorant stick. There are stones, wipes, pastes—not to mention other more readily available alternatives like sprays and liquids.

The Best Deodorant Stones for Travel

Deodorant stones have been around for decades. Made of natural mineral salts, the deodorant forms an invisible layer of scentless protection to create an environment hostile to odor-causing bacteria. They’re also typically paraben and chemical-free!

  • Crystal Body Deodorant Rock , $6
  • Lehman’s Deodorant Stone , $13

Best Travel-Sized Deodorant Spray

Some folks swear by deodorant spray since it can work double-time as both a deodorant and a general body freshener. Dove products sweep the market in terms of their accessibility (available just about anywhere), affordability, and their travel-sized aerosol spray can deodorants!

  • For men: Dove Men+Care 1 Oz. Clean Comfort Dry Spray , $5
  • For women : Dove Dry Spray Antiperspirant Deodorant, Cool Essentials , $2

Best Liquid Deodorant for Travel

Liquid deodorant is applied in the same way you’d apply a typical stick deodorant, but comes in a ball-top bottle with a liquid solution that rolls on evenly. It can even come as a cream or paste that you apply with your own hands. Since these deodorants are typically still wet when applied, we recommend putting it on a few minutes before dressing for your upcoming day of adventures!

  • For women : Meow Meow Lavendar Deodorant Cream , $2
  • For men: Bulldog Skin Care , $6

travel size unscented deodorant

Natural Deodorants

Natural deodorants have made a strong headway in the personal hygiene market in recent years. Often linked to studies that suggest deodorant and antiperspirant use can lead to negative health impacts, these products thrive thanks to ingredients that allow your body to sweat naturally (and healthily). They also can help prevent skin irritation and other issues that some minerals can inflame in a synthetic deodorant product.

The Best Natural Deodorant for Travel

  • For men: Ursa Major No B.S. deodorant , $18
  • For women : Lovefresh – All Natural Super Strength Deodorant , $12

You can travel stink-free (or close to it) thanks to the best travel deodorants and antiperspirants on the market. Being thoughtful about your approach to travel deodorant can mean more pleasant rides—and smells—for all individuals involved.

And, on behalf of all of the folks bound to sit next to you on a plane or train, or across the rom in that tiny hole-in-the-wall cafe, thank you!

Buying Guide: Travel Size Deodorants

Getting ready for a trip but unsure of what deodorant to take? Our handy buyer’s guide will answer all your travel size deodorant questions and give you some tips on how to purchase the right one for you. Read on to make an informed decision.

Why Should You Buy Travel Size Deodorants?

Frequent travelers need smaller-sized products to take with them wherever they go. But there are several requirements for skin care and cosmetics that you can’t overlook. During holidays and trips abroad, deodorants are a must-have. Most choose travel size versions of these items since they’re convenient to carry and apply while traveling. These small deodorants are often TSA-approved and simple to use. They come in scented and unscented forms, both of which include antiperspirant elements. All in all, a travel-friendly deodorant helps you stay smelling fresh while exploring the world.

Factors To Consider When Buying Travel Size Deodorant

Ingredients.

If you’re looking for the most effective deodorant, make sure it’s made entirely of natural ingredients. Aluminum is a chemical used in conventional deodorants that blocks your sweat glands, so be sure it isn’t in your travel size deodorant to prevent suffering from rashes or allergic reactions.

Destination

You should also consider where you’re traveling because not all destinations will have a store nearby. Plus, supermarkets near popular destinations have either low-quality products or the prices are too high. That’s why it’s better to take your favorite deodorant with you. Also remember that while traveling in certain regions — such as across Asia or Africa — you may have trouble finding your preferred mainstream products.

What Should You Look For in a Travel Size Deodorant?

If you want to take your deodorant on the airplane, make sure it is 3.8 ounces or less in size. Having a compact travel size deodorant is useful for all types of travel, not just traveling by air as it can fit easily into your bag without taking up too much room.

Roll-on or aerosol spray

Although the ingredients in both these deodorant types are almost the same, some may prefer roll-on sticks due to the solid texture while others may be inclined towards aerosol sprays due to the hygiene factor. If you have sensitive skin, a roll-on stick is the better choice because it’s less likely to sting or irritate your skin. Sprays may have ingredients that irritate your skin, cause allergic reactions, and even result in breathing problems. Roll-ons are also more organic than aerosol spray cans because they are biodegradable.

While most deodorants provide 24-hour coverage, some companies claim to keep the user dry and smelling good for 36 to 48 hours. You can also get extra-strong antiperspirant pads that provide up to seven days of coverage for those who sweat a lot.

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Travel Size Deodorants

Most individuals need to use deodorant once a day, while others need to reapply it again throughout the day to keep excess perspiration at bay. We recommend getting a natural, clinically-approved, and dermatologically-tested deodorant to treat your sweat glands naturally.

It’s better to opt for hypoallergenic deodorants if you’re prone to skin-related diseases or allergies. You can find hypersensitive products with skin-soothing components that offer a cooling effect to soothe irritated skin. As it's generally the scent that causes discomfort, you might be happier with an unscented alternative.

Amazing Product!!!

travel size unscented deodorant

I'm a breast cancer survivor, and I can not use skincare products with harsh chemicals since chemo, and it is so difficult for me to try to find something I can use that was safe and smell good. I tried several other natural deodorants before with no success, and I am so thrilled I found FREEDOM. It truly works, it smells amazing and I'm never switching back. And I love that they give back to breast cancer, that's huuuuuge for me."

This Works Like Nothing Else!

I’ve been trying to switch to natural deodorant because I don’t want to put aluminum on my body. The problem was that every natural deodorant I've tried left me smelling worse than my actual odor. Then I found Freedom, and it changed my life! I apply it once and knows it's good for the rest of the entire day.

BEST NATURAL DEODORANT EVER!

When they say this lasts 24 hours, I didn't believe it until I did 1 hour of crossfit, came home drenching in sweat and I asked my husband to smell my armpit LOL and he said he didn't smell anything. I don't know what magic is in this stuff but this really really works."

Native has received over 50,000 5 star reviews, ask us anything.

Anti-perspirant prevents you from sweating. That is, the aluminum contained in anti-perspirant acts as a plug on your body’s sweat ducts and prevents you from sweating and releasing other byproducts of sweat. Natural deodorant works by reducing and neutralizing odors associated with sweat.

Native deodorant is not an antiperspirant. We are pro-perspiration, anti-feeling wet. We believe your body knows best, so we work with your body’s natural processes to keep you feeling dry and smelling fresh.

Our stance is that people should have options. If you are concerned about aluminum or phthalates, we have an option that actually works and helps you feel good about what you are putting on your body.

We formulated deodorants specifically for those who are sensitive to baking soda. Check out Coconut & Vanilla (Sensitive) or Cotton & Lily (Sensitive). The formula does not contain baking soda. You can check them out here!

A group of different types of deodorants on multi color background

The weather is warming up, and the ladies are about to get their fix of all the best things summer brings — iced coffees , concerts , hot girl walks , sleeveless tops , and strappy dresses are sitting at the top of our list.

And, while there is plenty to celebrate in the months ahead, there are also a few things that we’re not particularly looking forward to. Sweat is one of them. ‘Tis the season of sweaty pits, which means lathering yourself in perfume and crossing your fingers ( just kidding ). Personal hygiene is important all year round, but the summer months can be especially tricky when it comes to keeping your skin refreshed and smelling your best.

The good news is that there’s a range of deodorant brands on the market, whether you prefer an eco-friendly natural formula like Native Regular Deodorant , something gentle on sensitive skin like this cream from Forgotten Skincare , or a hardcore musk-buster like the Arm & Hammer Deodorant which will keep you smelling lovely all day long.

Some brands are aimed at reducing sweat and keeping your underarms dry, while others are mostly meant to mask smells. Deodorants and antiperspirants also come in a variety of forms; sticks, rolls, and sprays — so you can take your pick at whatever works best for you.

Read more: The best deodorants for sensitive skin that actually work, per an expert

To bring you the best review of deodorants for women, we’ve rounded up a list of those tried and tested by all the women on the Post Wanted team. Finding the right deodorant can take some trial and error, so we recommend you take your time with consistent use before making a final judgment call.

Best for sweating: Arm & Hammer Deodorant 2.6oz Solid Ultra Powder Fresh

Best all-natural: native regular deodorant, best gel: secret clinically proven formula, best spray: dove aerosol antiperspirant deodorant.

  • Best smelling: Rio Deo Aluminum-free Refillable Deodorant

Best aluminum-free: Secret’s Aluminum-free Deodorant

Close-up view of a deodorant

  • Reduces underarm swear (ideal for those who sweat frequently or heavily)
  • Subtle scent — reviewers mention it blends well with other perfumes
  • Does contain aluminum

Size: 2.6 ounces

For a more subtle scent, one of our writers has recommended Arm & Hammer’s powder fresh formula. “I often switch things up with beauty and skincare, but when it comes to deodorant I stick with what works. This no-frills stick has been my standby for over a decade. I’m not a big fragrance person, so the subtle powder scent is perfect,” shared Hannah Southwick, Page Six Commerce Writer and Reporter.

A white bottle next to a box

  • Wide range of scent options that smell good
  • Truly long-lasting
  • Variety of application products to choose from your preference
  • The clinical formula may irritate sensitive skin types

“I’ve been partial to Secret’s deodorants for as long as I’ve been wearing deodorant! I love that the brand has a variety of products, ranging from dry sprays to clinical strength solids, and a wide range of scents to choose from. I like to rotate fragrances, although lavender and cozy vanilla are my long-time favorites that blend well with my skin,” shared Meaghan Roche, Sr. Manager of SEO for Commerce. “The clear gel version has above average strength, which can be harder to find with a gel compared with a solid, and leaves no stain or trace on clothing. I prefer to keep both the gel and solid on hand depending on my needs, as I find that the solid lasts just a bit longer.”

A white bottle with a blue cap

  • Spray-on is ideal for quick and easy application
  • A variety of scents are available as well as an unscented option
  • Can be bought in bulk
  • Spray deodorants may be less precise, so some of the product could be waisted

Size: 4.8 ounces

Another top contender from our Post Wanted team is a spray-on deodorant that does the trick with a simple application. “I love the Dove dry spray because it’s lightweight, smells amazing, and lasts so long. It doesn’t feel sticky or clumpy like traditional swipe-on deodorant. Every scent smells so good it could be a perfume,” explained Commerce Partnerships Coordinator, Julie Fuschetti.

Best smelling: Rio Deo Aluminum-Free Refillable Deodorant

Yellow and white bottle with white cap

  • Papaya enzyme gently exfoliates to remove dead skin cells, fight ingrown hairs, and promote an even skin tone
  • Coconut oil quickly melts into the skin to soften, condition, and moisturize
  • Does not leave residue on the skin
  • Aluminum-free, baking soda-free based
  • I wish it lasted a bit longer (I go through it fast and have had the tip of the applicator break/crack)

Size: 2 ounces

Honestly, I’m not sure what I love most about this deodorant — the fact that it smells so good that I could eat it (I mean, it’s a combination of salted caramel and pistachio, so duh) or that it reminds me of the iconic Brazilian Bum Bum Cream scent (they’re the same scent formula). It really just smells like summer. Aside from those selling points, I love how easily this deodorant glides on, and the fact that the tube is refillable, so you can buy in bulk and reduce plastic waste.

Best with probiotics: Alo Supernatural Aluminum-Free Deodorant with Anti-Odor Probiotics

A white deoderant container with black text

  • Long-lasting and stays on and keeps arms dry through workouts
  • A powerful blend of ingredients and vitamin C keeps skin soft, smooth, and nourished
  • Provides full-coverage and leaves behind no residue
  • The citrus smell is not for everyone (a matter of personal preference)

Size: 1.7 ounces

Another one of my favorite, aluminum-free deodorants comes from my favorite activeware store, Alo. The citrus scent is a game-changer. It’s powered with super-antioxidants, vitamin C, cleansing tea tree, anti-odor probiotics, plus an extra dose of hydrating hyaluronic acid. My skin feels hydrated for hours after applying just a small amount. And, I’ve noticed that this lasts longer than some other deodorants I’ve used. It’s survived sweaty workouts, yoga classes, hikes, camping trips, and more.

Best baking-soda formula: Billie All Day Deodorant

A purple plastic container with white text

  • Aluminum-free and baking soda-free ingredients
  • Designed specifically for women
  • Four scents available
  • Lightweight and glides on easily
  • Some mixed reviews on the scent and stickiness

The Billie All Day Deodorant is the brand’s newer foray into the natural deodorant space — and one of my favorites,” said Victoria Giardina, New York Post Content Strategist and Commerce Journalist. “It’s made with aluminum-free ingredients that are long-lasting and I feel like I’m using a ‘non-natural’ deodorant in terms of staying power. It’s also super lightweight and always swipes onto my skin with a well-coated, velvety, and bare-skin finish.”

Best brightening deodorant: Forgotten Skincare’s The Original Underarm Brightening Deodorant Cream

A white bottle with an orange label

  • Not just for body odor — but also brightens and softens the skin
  • Good for sensitive skin (hyperpigmentation, razor burn, ingrown hairs)
  • Serum can also be applied to the bikini line (not just to the armpits)
  • Should be used consistently to see the best results — make take some time to pay off

“Forgotten Skincare’s The Original Underarm Brightening Deodorant Cream is a splurge, but one worth making,” Giardina noted of another of her favorite brands. “Specially designed for sensitive skin like mine, it’s the quick fix (or should I say, quick swipe) for hyperpigmentation, razor bumps, uneven texture, and redness. Oh, and body odor. But, not only that — it helps brighten. It’s like skincare for your underarms.”

White container with brown text, presumably a Native Classic deodorant in Coconut Vanilla scent

  • Free of aluminum salts, parabens, and phthalates
  • 22 scents with regular limited-time exclusives
  • Long-lasting formula (72 hours of protection)
  • Some reviewers say this is less powerful than other deodorants they have tired

Size: 2.65 ounces

Giardina’s final pick is the Native Regular Deodorant. “I’m beyond obsessed with the Native Regular Deodorant and, impressively, it comes in a wealth of sensitive skin-friendly scent notes to choose from. It’s void of aluminum salts, parabens, and phthalates while tackling odor swipe-first. Uniquely, it uses baking soda on its label, rendering the formulation effective. It also seems to brighten the area as well.”

Best luxury: Donna Karen Cashmere Mist

A white bottle with black text

  • The scent is more on the mild side (not overpowering)
  • Aluminum-free and alcohol-free
  • Ideal for sensitive skin or people prone to breaking out
  • Some reviewers say it breaks before it’s gone (important to push up only a little at a time to avoid cracking)

This deodorant is the top pick by not one, but two members of the Post Wanted team.

“The only women’s deodorant that has ever worked for me is the Donna Karen Cashmere Mist deodorant. My small circle of friends swears by it, especially the fashion girlies who are on their feet and running around the city all day. It keeps me dry and smelling fresh — nothing overpowering — for like two days straight,” said Kendall Cornish, Commerce Editor and Reporter.

“Donna Karen’s Cashmere Mist Deodorant sounds as good as it feels, gliding on seamlessly,” said Emma Sutton Willians, Commerce Writer and Reporter. “I’m very sensitive and break out easily, but I have never broken out using her deodorant. It never ruins my clothing with white splotches, and yes, it’s a bit of a splurge for me, but I find it’s worth it. Your senses will be delighted with a floral, powdery scent that keeps you smelling fresh all day long.”

A blue and white bottle of deodorant

  • Vegan and paraben-free
  • Dries quickly and very lightweight, per reviews
  • Offers 48 hours of protection
  • Doesn’t prevent sweating but masks the smell adequately

Size: 2.4 ounces

“I sweat — a lot, especially when I’m stressed, so I take my deodorant seriously. I’ve tried a lot of brands and they either haven’t worked or have aluminum, which I try to avoid,” shared Holly Coley, the Commerce Updates Editor at the Post. “After one natural deodorant left me disappointed, I decided to try Secret’s Aluminum Free line. It covers you up to 48 hours, is vegan, and doesn’t have parabens. I’ve been using the Real Coconut scent for the last few weeks and haven’t been disappointed. It’s not antiperspirant, so I still sweat, only now no one can tell. It dries fast too, doesn’t leave white marks on my clothes, and actually smells really good.”

Best moisturizing: Glossier Deodorant

A group of white containers with different colored caps

  • Come with refillable packaging stick (more eco-friendly)
  • Moisturizing ingredients like superfruit elderberry extract, magnesium hydroxide and potato starch
  • Aluminum-free
  • Only three signature scents are available
  • Some reviewers mentioned it didn’t reduce the amount of sweat, but did help with odor

Size: 2.2 ounces

“Glossier takes ‘clean girl’ aesthetic to a literal level with their new deodorant,” shared Sophie Cannon, the Associate Manager of Commerce Strategy & Development. “As a long-time fan of their ‘You’ fragrance,  which the Post reviewed , I was thrilled that a matching deodorant was released. You can fully match the scent with their “You” deodorant, or try something new with Orange Blossom Neroli or Sandstone. For those that like unscented, they also have a long-lasting unscented version that will help you smell clean without any added fragrance. Plus, all of the scents are refillable, helping you and the planet stay cool.”

More Post Wanted Picks

Best for the whole body: lume soft powder deodorant.

A purple and white container with a label

  • Clinically proven 72-hour odor control
  • Safe for use across the body (underboobs, belly buttons, tummy folds, cracks, etc.)
  • Decreased the appearance of hyperpigmentation
  • Mixed reviews on the scents

A deodorant that works on the whole body? Meet Lume. This brand is for pits, privates, and beyond. It is ph pH-optimized and clinically proven to control body odor for 72 hours. Reviewers love that it doesn’t stain their clothes, and is the perfect size for travel.

Customers are saying: “I have put a little here, there, and everywhere. It works. It is a fantastic product. I am very careful with what I put on my skin. It has not caused me to itch or feel irritated. It dries clear and does not leave a residue.”

Best for sensitive skin: Curie Deodorant Stick 3-Pack

A white container with a label

  • Free of aluminum, parabens, or phthalates
  • Odor protection is long-lasting, per many reviews
  • Positive review for scent
  • Thicker formula — may be a bit more difficult to apply to skin

Curi’s aluminum-free deodorant works wonders for people with sensitive skin. It’s made with wholesome ingredients like sage oil, triethyl citrate, and baking soda to soothe and moisturize dry, cracked, or irritated underarms.

Customers are saying: “I have tried a lot of natural deodorants, and they either cause an allergic reaction where my armpits feel like fire ants attacked me, or they don’t feel like they’re working! This has a mild scent, seems to work so much better (in that I actually feel dry and don’t have an underlying BO smell), and no allergic reaction!”

Best non-GMO: Humble Brands Original Formula Aluminum-free Deodorant

A white bottle with a green label

  • Very simple natural formula (just four ingredients)
  • Botanical extracts are used for a variety of scents
  • Scents are more on the mild side
  • Does not leave marks on clothes, per many reviewers
  • Some reviewers mention that it forms some lumps

Size: 2.5 ounces

When in doubt go with something simple. The Humble Original Formula is derived from just four ingredients: non-GMO corn starch, beeswax, baking soda, and MCT oil. It neutralizes odors without clogging pores, and while you may still sweat while using it, the fresh nature-inspired scents are said to mask smells quite well.

Customers are saying: “I’ve tried a bunch of aluminum-free deodorants and there’s only a few that actually work. Humble works for regular daytime work as well as intense gym workouts. I never experienced B.O. which is a plus. It’s not an antiperspirant, but it keeps you from being stinky and doesn’t have any harmful chemicals.”

How we tested

We didn’t just ‘test,’ these deodorants — we swear by them. The deodorants in this roundup are worn regularly by our Post Wanted team members. To provide insightful analyses for each brand, we’ve added our thoughts on skin-friendliness, odor prevention, and sweat prevention.

Skin-friendliness: Does it moisturize? Does it hydrate? How does it affect your pores? These are all serious questions that we’ve asked to ensure you find a deodorant that caters to your skin type — whether dry, itchy, or a combination of both. In testing various deodorants, we’ve found some that are precisely formulated to hydrate and brighten the skin, as well as prevent odors.

Odor prevention: Body odor is completely normal. Deodorants work by attacking the bacteria on your skin (that can be exasperated by sweating), which could potentially lead to a musky or pungent smell. We’ve made note of how well each deodorant works to combat these odors, and how long the odor protection lasts.

Sweat prevention: Unlike generic deodorants, antiperspirants reduce underarm sweating by blocking the pores on the outer layer of your skin. Some people can be sensitive to certain ingredients and harmful chemicals used in antiperspirants like aluminum. We’ve pointed out whether these ingredients are included in each formula, and whether any skin reactions occurred.

FAQ’s on choosing the right deodorant

What is the difference between deodorant and antiperspirants.

Preventing sweat is an entirely different game than quenching unwanted scents. Deodorants mask pungent odors or reduce the amount of bacteria-causing odors, while antiperspirants reduce the amount of sweat your body releases — consequently preventing bad smells before they occur.

How does aluminum work in deodorants and antiperspirants?

Antiperspirants are made of ingredients, including aluminum salts. In the simplest terms, aluminum disrupts the natural sweating process. “Aluminum salts dissolve on your skin and “melt” into your pores. This helps plug up your pores and stop some of your sweat,” according to Healthline .

Why do some people avoid aluminum in deodorants?

Some people try to avoid chemicals such as aluminum because of concerns that they could have negative health effects by preventing sweating. Per Healthline , some research has suggested that aluminum, at least in large amounts, may be harmful to the body’s endocrine system over time.

Do natural deodorants work as well as traditional deodorants?

Those looking to avoid aluminum may opt for natural ingredients that won’t block sweat glands. It’s important to consider that natural deodorants mask smells but they do not prevent sweat altogether, so you may still experience some unwanted scents.

Healthline suggests giving your body time to adjust to alternative deodorants, “Don’t expect the same results as traditional deodorants when switching to a natural product. It could take a few days or weeks for your underarms to rebalance their ecosystem.”

Independent Travel to Moscow and St. Petersburg

My wife and I have traveled independently to many European countries and, after reading many of the comments in this forum, feel like we may be able to do so in Moscow and St. Petersburg as well, although we feel somewhat less comfortable than the other countries where we have traveled in Europe.

My biggest question is how much we will miss by visiting the main sites without a tour guide. In the other European countries we have visited on our own we have been comfortable and satisfied with the level of knowledge we have gained by studying and visiting on our own, although we believe a tour guide or tour company in any country would normally be able to provide greater insight than visiting a site on our own, but about in Moscow and St. Petersburg?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Unless you speak at least some Russian and read the alphabet it would be difficult without a guide. Very few signs in English especially in Moscow. Also not too many people speak English there.

I visited St Petersburg last Autumn for a protracted period , and did not find it anymore daunting than any other European city . As Ilja says , learning the Cyrillic alphabet is a big plus . I also found that it was fairly easy to grasp . It will , among other things , enable you to read signs with relative ease . I would answer the main part or your question ( about tour guides ) thus - I am not enamored of tour guides or tours. While I only use a tour under duress ( A sites rules prohibiting an independent visit - ie Glasgow School of Art , Municipal House in Prague , etc ) . Doing your own preparation and homework is the best way , in my opinion . My wife and I ventured through St Petersburg with nary a concern ,and made two day trips outside of the central district ( one was twenty five miles away , and no English speakers in sight ) Figuring out the logistical details , did not present any difficulties . While I never use tours , I am an inveterate eavesdropper , have done so many times , and find , that on balance , the information that they impart is fairly elementary . If you want greater detail , they are unlikely to supply it . I also prefer to go at my own pace , not being rushed and being able to dwell on things that most other visitors barely give a passing glance . If you are interested , let me know . I would be happy to provide you with information that will enable you to travel independently

Thank you, Steven. I am encouraged by your comments and feel the same way you do about tour groups. We are very much willing to prepare in advance and learn the basics of the Cyrillic alphabet to help us have a better experience.

I would be very interested in learning more about your experience in Russia and receiving any additional information you can provide on independent travel there, starting perhaps with obtaining the visa.

I am not opposed to hiring a private or small group guide for a specific site or for a day trip outside St Petersburg and Moscow, but, like you said, I much prefer the freedom of staying at places as long or short as I want and seeing the sites that interest me most. For example, neither my wife nor I are big into shopping, yet most tour itineraries leave afternoon time for just that. Not interested!

Please provide whatever you may feel would be helpful for us.

Russ , I see you are quite near San Francisco - you can start by looking at the VISA procedure , it's fairly straightforward . Since there is a consulate in San Francisco - look here http://www.consulrussia.org/eng/visa-sub1.html

And here - http://ils-usa.com/main.php

Having always traveled independently, we thought we could do a better job than any tour. How misguided (pun intended) we were. Now that we have had the experience of having someone native to the area walk us around and explain things through a personal perspective we realize how much we missed. For St. Petersburg I highly recommend http://www.peterswalk.com/tours.html . This is not a traditional guided tour, but an opportunity to receive some orientation to the area as well as insight into the "Russian soul". I think if you did this upon arrival the rest of your time would be much more meaningful. We really liked the http://www.pushka-inn.com . The location is superb (just around the corner from the Hermitage square), the rooms lovely, the included breakfast at the restaurant next door ample and overall an excellent value. We used this company to get our visa: https://www.passportvisasexpress.com/site/san_francisco_customer_service Note that it costs about the same for a 3-year visa as a one-year, and you never know if you might want to return within that more extended window of time. It is not cheap, so factor that into your planning.

If you like traveling without a guide in other countries and find this satisfying, the same will be true in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Of course it's not either/or - you can certainly take a guided walk or boat tour, for instance.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of learning Cyrillic if you're going on your own. The book I used was Teach Yourself Beginner's Russian Script, which was great. It breaks down the alphabet into letters that are the same as English, letters that look the same but are pronounced differently, etc. It's out of print, but you can get used copies on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Teach-Yourself-Beginners-Russian-Script/dp/0071419861/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1459701143&sr=8-2&keywords=teach+yourself+russian+script

Russia is indeed a bit more "foreign" than say, Italy. However, in Moscow and St. Petersburg, I found enough English to be able to get by. Many restaurants had English menus and/or English speaking staff, for instance. This was most emphatically not true in Vladimir and Suzdal (two cities in the Golden Ring outside Moscow). I went with my sister, a Russian speaker, and if she hadn't been there, I would have been in big trouble. So, if you want to see places outside these two big cities, use a guided tour (even if just for that part). Also, Moscow and St. Petersburg are huge cities. Coming from New York, I wasn't intimidated, but those not used to a megacity may not be so cavalier (even I found them overwhelming at times, especially Moscow).

I found both Lonely Planet and Rough Guide to be helpful, and both to have various errors. Look at both, buy whichever one has a more recent edition, and then be prepared to have to discard some of the advice therein. Also, these places change more quickly than places in Western Europe. Be very careful of outdated advice. For instance, I was there in 2001 and 2010, so I won't give you any specifics on getting a visa - that changes constantly.

Just as a teaser, two things I saw and loved that I doubt would be included in any escorted tour are the Gorky House in Moscow (an Art Nouveau wonder) and the Sheremyetov Palace in St. Petersburg (it's now a museum of musical instruments, and the decor is amazing, particularly in the Etruscan Room).

Thanks for all the good advice. Any additional thoughts are welcomed.

One of history's seminal works pertaining to Russian history and culture and a MUST for anyone contemplating a visit or simply interested , is this fine work from 1980 - http://www.amazon.com/Land-Firebird-The-Beauty-Russia/dp/096441841X

This is about you and not about Petersburg. Do you like guided tours? We don't and didn't find that a guide added to our experience in China where we did hire private guides mostly for the logistics; it was easy to have someone drive us places. But once at a site, we didn't need the guide. I felt the same way about our 9 nights in Petersburg. We did hire a guide for the trip to the Catherine Palace again for the ease of logistics for us Olds. Here is our visit: https://janettravels.wordpress.com/2016/01/23/an-easy-trip-to-the-catherine-palace/ There are also snapshots of the Church on Spilled Blood in this photo journal. Having someone pick us up at the apartment and get us in without line ups and shepherd us through the palace steering clear of the tour groups was lovely. But we didn't need commentary because we can read and prepare.

You certainly don't need a guide for the Hermitage (we spent 4 days there), the Russian Museum, the Kazan Cathedral or Church on Spilled Blood or the Faberge Museum. We enjoyed a number of self guided walking tours including a couple from Rick Steves guidebooks. We took the canal cruise suggested by RS that had an English commentator. I would not take one without that as you will be totally clueless. The commentator was not all that good but at least we had some idea what we were seeing. So for people like us who like to do our own thing and can read a guidebook and don't particularly like to be led about, a tour is not needed. If you enjoy tour groups, then go for it. Petersburg is easy to negotiate. It helps if you can read the cyrillic alphabet and it is also useful to have the google translate ap on your phone. We found ourselves translating packages in grocery stores with it and the occasional museum sign or menu. I have one food I need to avoid and so it was handy to have the translator to talk with waiters (I could either show them the sentence, or play it for them or play it to myself and then repeat it to the waiter -- that all worked well)

Dear Russ, I cannot help you with Moscow, but about four years ago, my husband and I went to St Petersburg on our own. But, we did use a private guide for 4 half days. We both feel that our guide absolutely made our trip (we stayed 6 or 7 nights). We used a company owned by Tatyana Chiurikova, www.tour-stpetersburg.com I cannot say enough good things about her and our experience. I emailed her and we worked out a schedule/ sights that was tailored to our interests. She also offered some recommendations, which we took. The guide will meet you at your hotel. And frequently, at certain places, with the guide, we were able to skip the long entrance lines. We had an half day driving tour of the city (car, driver, & guide). You are taken to & go in places such as Peter & Paul Fortress, some of the cathedrals, etc. We had a half day with the guide at the Hermitage which ensured that we would see the major sights there. And, of course, you can stay after your guide leaves or return another day. Also, we had the guide for Peterhof (a must & go by boat) and Catherine's Palace. I hope that you will go to the website. As I said, our guide made our trip. I am positive that we would have missed quite a bit on our own everyday. And I'm sure we would have wasted a lot of time trying to get to various place. This was the best of both worlds, a guide where needed and plenty of time on our own. Whatever you do, I'm sure that you will love St Petersburg! Ashley

I am curious about the lines as we encountered no lines on our trip -- but it was in September. We got tickets for the Hermitage at machines and skipped those lines and our guide for the Catherine Palace which was our only guided experience (as noted before, chosen for the logistics of getting there) had arranged tickets and we didn't have a line, but then we also didn't see lines. We did not find lines at any other site.

Both Moscow and St Petersburg I've done on my own, that is together with the Dear Partner. I can't remember any problem getting where we wanted to go. The Metro systems are well signed, and with a little exercise and patience you can recognize the station names. With a good map and a good guide - we had the Rough Guides - that part of the logistics is solved. The language is a major problem, but the usual tricks of pointing, looking helpless, and making a joke of it all do wonders. I would hate to be led by a guide, but for others it is a comfortable thought.

We also did both cities on our own. I found the DK Eyewitness guide for Moscow has the best map. I used the one from our library (kept the book at home). Took the smaller RS book for St. Petersburg ( his book on northern cities). His map and restaurant ideas were all good. We also downloaded the Google maps in our Android Samsung tablets/phones for both cities and then could get directions to any place we typed in. The blue ball guided us everywhere. I'm sure we missed somethings by not having a guide, but we just enjoy walking around and getting a sense of a place. If you like art, The Hermitage is great. We went 3 times and still missed alot. In St. Peterburg we stayed at the 3 Mosta which we loved (quite and not far from the Church of Spilled Blood.) We also loved the Georgian food in both cities. There's a great Georgian restaurant near the 3 Mosta hotel. We're now in Belarus- very scenic. Enjoy your trip!!
