Ski gear. Hi Neighbors! I am visiting Colorado in about a week with my son and have been having a hard time finding reasonably priced snow gear. Was wondering if anyone could recommend a place or has some in their garage or collecting dust in their closet! I could purchase or even borrow/rent! My son is 13 and wears a men's small and size 10 - 10.5 boots. I wear a woman's large and size 8-8.5 in boots. This trip is getting expensive fast and only needing it for 4 days isn't worth buying new. I have checking Burlington's and a few thrift stores in the area no luck. :( See more …

4.5 stars. I only recently discovered Travel Country Outfitters when I was searching online for a jacket. This business has operated since 1971, and it sells clothing, outerwear, footwear, outdoor gear (e.g., backpacks, kayaks, and tents), etcetera. Dozens of brands are available, including my favorites of ECCO, Marmot, The North Face, and Wigwam. According to Google, Travel Country Outfitters had a particular jacket in stock at the lowest price--The North Face Venture 2 Jacket for $60 plus ground shipping for $10. The next day, this business shipped my package. Three days later, UPS delivered the package to my home. I really like the style, color, and quality of the jacket, and I look forward to wearing it. Travel Country Outfitters does not sell all of the brands and styles that I prefer, but I would definitely consider buying from them again in the future.

Thank you to Mallory for her expertise and knowledge. Her kindness and willingness to help. She is a great asset to the company!

100% Recommend this business if you are searching for anything outdoors. I purchased a "blemish" Hobie Outback Kayak which is one that Hobie deems to be less than perfect. I could not find a single thing that was wrong with it. I initially spoke with Alyssa over the phone and she was very helpful. She confirmed what I was asking and eventually made my way to the store. Dennis walked me through the kayak, from front to back when I got there and Conner talked accessories once I started browsing the store. Brian was super helpful and even underselling me on add on's which is a veteran move because if you've ever bought a kayak then you know it's easy to put on a bunch of stuff you don't need. Overall the entire experience was great and they now have a customer for life.

Travel County promotes FREE SHIPPING, but after placing a North Face jacket in my cart, the shipping charges started at $15.95 for ground shipping to Washington DC - no free shipping option at all. When I contacted Customer Service, I was placed on hold while the agent spoke with her Manager. When she returned, she indicated they did not know why this was happening but could not offer free shipping for a phone order. I indicated that I would probably purchase the jacket at Moosejaw where the shipping was indeed free. Her response, "that's probably a good idea". Forget these clowns - they are dishonest, know almost nothing about customer service or problem resolution, and they apparently know even less about the lifetime value of a customer.

Hi John, thanks for bringing this to our attention and leaving a screen shot. There was an error in our database associated with that specific zip code which located the zip code outside of the 48 contiguous states. Thanks to you, we have fixed that error. On top of that, we we had some new staff working the internet department that day because some of our more experienced staff was working our annual Big Green Eggfest. We messed up and there is no excuse for that. The young staff member who made that comment to you will be sure that doesn't happen again. We made a msitake and we're sorry.

Photo of Ti C.

Let me start by saying that this place is amazing. Yes they made a mistake by sending me the wrong size and it wasn't another the same to replace it but, the customer service was amazing. Everyone I spoke to was or at the least acted like they were concerned and apologized for the mishap. The consumer service was so great I was apologizing for their mistake lol. All the 2 young women I spoke to were great and Bret was amazing. I contacted them with the thought in my head it was gonna be a fight and ended up smiling because the way I was treated. I created a yelp account just to write a review.

We appreciate you Ti and we always try to make good on our mistakes.

I happened upon this company which is across the country from me(I am in Northern California) on the internet and they had the Vibram toes shoes I had been searching after for a few days in stock and offered overnight delivery. When I called to ensure that my order went out in time(and yes they had an actual number to call where someone answers!!), Alyssa answered and totally went above and beyond to make sure that my order went out! Wonderful customer service!! Really a step above any others. I highly recommend this store and Alyssa for customer service! 5 Stars *****!

Jan 19, 2022

Thanks Kipp, we strive to provide the highest level of customer care to our web shoppers and Alyssa is one of our best staff members.

I love this place! Great gear for hikers and kayaking. They have everything a serious kayaker needs. Their hiking gear is top of the line.

We LOVE Travel Country. Everyone that works there is so knowledgeable and helpful. We were new to kayaking and had quite a few questions and the staff answered everything and they were so pleasant. I never felt rushed and they helped us pick the right kayaks for us. The next week we came back in and purchased 2 Hobie Passports which we really enjoy. Now we are on the water every weekend enjoying the beautiful spots Florida has to offer. If you're not sure about a purchase or just have some general questions, I'd 100% reccomend TC. Amazing customer service and cool people!

15 Best Things to Do in Longwood (FL)

Towards the north of Greater Orlando, Longwood is a mostly residential city with a growing population. For me, the historic district sums up Longwood neatly.

Rather than a bustling downtown, this is a peaceful grid of streets with ornate 19th-century residences and beautiful live oaks with streams of Spanish moss.

On the wooded theme, Big Tree Park is a hydric hammock with some of the tallest and oldest bald cypresses in the world.

You can get there along the Cross Seminole Trail, one of two long multi-use trails passing through Longwood.

Despite its understated atmosphere, there’s a lot to do in this city. There’s a weekly farmers’ market, regular concerts, picturesque parks, and a high-ranking art fair in November.

1. Cross Seminole Trail

Cross Seminole Trail near Big Tree Park

Longwood has two trailheads for this 23-trail that works its way from Winter Park to Lake Mary.

You can begin your journey at Soldiers Creek Park or Big Tree Park, both within the beautiful green corridor where Soldiers Creek flows into Lake Jesup.

The Cross Seminole Trail has gradually joined up over 20+ years since the first segment opened in 2002. Eventually this route will become part of the Florida Coast-to-Coast Trail, connecting the Gulf and Atlantic coasts.

For now I think it’s a fine way to explore Orlando’s northern suburbs, which are much more natural than you might expect. In Lake Mary the trail links with the Seminole Wekiva Trail, while in Winter Park you can get onto the Cady Way Trail.

2. Spring Hammock Preserve

Spring Hammock Preserve

On Longwood’s northeastern edge there’s a large mosaic of habitats extending to the western shore of Lake Jesup.

The Cross Seminole Trail passes through the 1,100-acre Spring Hammock Preserve. For me, it’s a wonderful way to see what Central Florida looked like before it was developed.

Along several watercourses, including Soldier Creek, the preserve is made up of hydric hammock, floodplain forest, pine flatwoods, and upland mixed hardwoods.

Boardwalks streak through the property, and continue to the shore of Lake Jesup. When I was here, some of these walkways were in need of renovation.

Spring Hammock Preserve also comprises Big Tree Park, which I’ll come to later in this list.

3. Longwood Historic District

One of my favorite things to do in any town is take to the streets on foot and see what I can find. The best place to do that in Longwood is the historic district, a few square blocks east of Milwee St and west of CR 427.

On sleepy streets, under stately live oaks and palms are some 40 contributing buildings. One of these is the Bradlee-McIntyre House (c. 1885), maintained as a museum by the Longwood Historical Society.

Also look out for the Longwood Hotel (1885), the Inside-Outside House (1873), and the Historic Civic Center (c. 1880). The latter is the oldest original building in situ in Longwood.

The Inside-Outside House was originally in Altamonte Springs, and is an early example of a prefab residence. The current occupant is the Cottage Gift Shop, one of a clutch of little specialty stores in the district.

4. Longwood Arts and Crafts Festival

Every November Longwood’s historic downtown springs to life for this two-day arts and crafts fair. First held in the 1970s, the festival welcomes more than 200 and hand craft exhibitors.

Something special about this event is that vendors are selected according to their uniqueness.

So, If you want to get hold of something truly one-off, I don’t think you can do much better. You’ll find jewelry, sculpture, photography, ceramics, art glass, painting, hats, a trove of home decor, and tons more.

When I was in town the festival had just ranked as a top 50 Best Contemporary/Classic Craft Fair in Sunshine Artists’ annual list.

5. Big Tree Park

The Cross Seminole Trail leads you right into this unforgettable environment on the west side of Spring Hammock Preserve.

The hydric hammock swamp here features some of the oldest and largest bald cypresses on the planet. One was The Senator, which was sadly destroyed in a fire in 2012.

At that time it was 3,500 years old and stood 125 tall. When I came through, the remnants were marked with a fence and a plaque.

On the lighter side, there are a lot of other awesome specimens around. Close by is Lady Liberty. This tree is believed to be well over 2,000 years old and reaches close to 90 feet in height.

6. Bradlee-Mcintyre House

Bradlee Mcintyre House

The only surviving building of its kind in Seminole and Orange counties, this Victorian house was built around 1885.

Built for wealthy New England vacationers, the Bradlee-Mcintyre House was originally located in Altamonte Springs, but was moved to its current spot in 1973.

It is an example of Victorian Cottage and Queen Anne style architecture, and abounds with the rich ornamentation associated with the late 19th century.

At that time the building was almost derelict, but was carefully restored by the Longwood Historical Society.

With an unusual octagonal tower, and 13 different rooms to explore, the house serves as the historical society’s museum.

Not long before I visited something really interesting had happened, as the society had managed to locate an original washstand from this residence in Athens, Georgia. This item was returned to the house in 2021, and is remarkable as it dates back to the building’s earliest days.

7. Reiter Park

Abutting the historic district, Reiter Park is the natural setting for community events in Longwood.

Once a month on select Saturdays, the amphitheater here hosts the Concerts in the Park series. All you have to do is bring a lawn chair or picnic blanket and enjoy the show as the sun goes down.

Every Saturday, 9:00 am to 1:00 pm, the City of Longwood Farmers’ Market takes place at the amphitheater in Reiter Park. I love how this coincides with seasonal events, like a children’s egg hunt at Easter.

As for amenities, the park offers a walking track, tennis courts, a basketball court, exercise equipment, picnic areas, pavilions, a playground and a splash pad.

8. Seminole-Wekiva Trail

Softball Complex, Seminole Wekiva Trail

Another multi-use trail serving Longwood is the Seminole-Wekiva Trail, which continues for 14 miles down to Altamonte Springs.

If you’re a frustrated historian like me, you might be interested to know that the trail is on a piece of the old Orange Belt Railway (1888-1893).

This was one of the longest narrow gauge railroads ever built in the United States, running for more than 150 miles from Sanford to St. Petersburg.

On that topic, the driving force behind the project was Russian exile Peter Demens (1850-1919). He owned a sawmill right here in Longwood.

Back on the trail, there’s a very scenic part northeast of Longwood where the path touches the east bank of the Wekiva River. For a detour you can also pedal off into Markham Woods, which has miles of mountain biking trails.

9. Paint the Trail

Paint The Trail

On the Seminole-Wekiva Trail, there is a panel of fences that brightens up your ride. A string of Pop Art-style portraits of famous personalities adorn the panels. So what’s it all about?

Artist Jeff Sonksen was made redundant during the recent global financial crisis and decided to do something about it. His backyard fence bordered the trail, so he started painting his own artwork on it.

Three years later, he has asked homeowners all along the trail to volunteer their fences to his artwork in the hope of creating a series of portraits that stretches for miles.

Several years later, this is still my favorite part of the trail, running for hundreds of feet north and south of Dixon Rd.

10. Orlando Glass Blowing Center

Since changing hands in 2020, this glassblowing studio in Longwood has been opened up to the public.

The Orlando Glass Blowing Center is an intimate space where you can learn the joy of crafting art glass through a variety of workshops and classes.

The studio is filled with high-quality glass-making equipment, and is staffed by professional instructors.

There are classes for all standards, whether you want one-on-one instruction, or would prefer to join a group. If you’re just curious you can always just drop by to watch a demonstration.

11. Hourglass Brewing

This independent craft brewery was founded in 2012 and has a lot to love about it. Rooted in Central Florida, Hourglass Brewing partners with a host of local businesses, and helps put local bands in the spotlight.

The taproom in Longwood is massive, with pinball machines, and walls plastered with quirky pop culture art and memorabilia, from TMNT to Star Trek. There’s also a clear view on the brewhouse and its fermentation tanks.

There were more than 20 beers on tap when I paid a visit. These cover the whole spectrum of flavor profiles, from light to rich and malty. As a fan of darker beers, I loved Get Dunked On, a malty Dunkelweizen.

Instead of food trucks, this brewery shares a building with two eateries, Wako Taco and Papa Bees (chicken wings).

12. Aiguille Rock Climbing Center

This indoor rock climbing gym in Longwood offers bouldering, top roping and auto-belay climbing.

For first-time visitors who are experienced climbers, the process is quick and easy. After filling out a waiver and taking a brief tour, you’ll be free to use the facilities with a day pass.

If you’re in need of more instruction, there are classes every day of the week, although the exact times differ, so you’ll need to check the website.

The gym has something for everyone, from beginners to experienced climbers. There’s 10,000 square feet of climbing, with six auto-belays and five top rope walls.

Added to that is an extensive bouldering area, and a proshop where you can pick up climbing shoes, chalk bags, and other gear.

13. Candyland Park

Longwood’s community park covers almost 18 acres in the northeastern corner of the city. Couched in one of Longwood’s older residential areas, Candyland Park is absolutely packed with amenities.

I’ll do my best to list them here. So, you’ve got tennis courts, a skate park, pump track, four baseball/softball fields, practice fields, basketball courts, a futsal court, a playground, and pickleball courts, to name just a few.

The playground is impressive, and is fenced, with benches and bleachers. Finally, there’s also a concession stand, which is normally open during baseball games.

14. Secret Lake Park

Secret Lake Park

I think I’ve shown that there’s an astonishing abundance of great parks around Longwood. If you have time for another, Secret Lake Park is barely five minutes away in Casselberry.

This is yet another stellar spot for a walk. For my part, I’ll never get tired of the sheer amount of wildlife visible at places like this. In the space of an hour I saw a wood stork, an owl, ibises, and a number of snakes and alligators.

The park is on the shores of three lakes, and is a prime place to launch a kayak. There’s also a boardwalk, tennis courts, several picnic pavilions, and the Casselberry Recreation Center.

15. Planet Obstacle

Planet Obstacle

This indoor fun center is a great day out for the kids, allowing them to blow off a lot of steam. Planet Obstacle is massive, with 50,000 square feet of attractions. In fact, it calls itself the World’s Largest Indoor Obstacle Park, and I don’t think it’s hyperbole.

There’s an extreme zip-line, aerial ropes course, a giant rock-climbing adventure, and an adult ninja course. You’ve also got bungees, trampolines, bumper cars, a ball pit, and a safe zone for wee ones up to two.

Planet Obstacle includes a Sky Cafe, for a pit stop after all the high-energy fun. There’s a lot of classic American comfort food, with veggie options included.

I've been to 107 countries. Italy and Mexico are great, but these 5 underrated destinations should be on your travel radar.

  • I've visited 107 countries, and I recommend these 5 that can be overlooked for more popular places.
  • Estonia is a European dream, and Namibia is one of my favorite places in the world .
  • Costa Rica is popular but not as packed with tourists as some similarly beautiful places nearby.

Insider Today

This year, travelers are looking to visit more under-the-radar destinations than popular ones — in part to dodge crowds and in part to save money.

Some are specifically looking for "travel dupes," a term for destinations similar to popular spots that are often cheaper with fewer crowds.

And, as someone who's been to 107 countries , I can tell you each region of the world has an often overlooked country that may offer a more rewarding experience than a more well-known place. These more under-the-radar destinations are often less crowded, and your dollar just might go further.

Popular travel destinations like Italy, France, and Mexico are great picks — but consider visiting these alternative options to the more popular choices in the region.

Estonia is a European dream.

travel country longwood

I was immediately captivated by the fairy-tale appearance of Tallinn, the capital city of Estonia.

Walking the cobblestoned streets within the fortress-like walls of the old city transported me back to medieval times.

The city is small enough to explore on foot, and there's plenty to entertain history and architecture enthusiasts. Enjoying a coffee or a beer in the Town Hall Square while people watching is a highlight of my European travels.

Although many people visit Tallinn as a day trip from Helsinki, which is a two-hour ferry ride away, it's worth staying here for a few days and heading into the Estonian countryside. The roads are often quite empty and incredibly peaceful.

I enjoyed Estonia so much that I returned twice more in the 18 months after my first visit.

I've enjoyed visiting Oman, a country in the Middle East.

travel country longwood

Dubai gets a lot of attention for its luxurious travel opportunities , and many know Qatar because it recently hosted the World Cup, but nearby Oman should not be skipped.

After all, Oman's capital, Muscat, provides an excellent gateway to the country.

A stroll along the beautiful Corniche will take you along the water and by the bustling Grand Bazaar. For those who love hikes, there are plenty of options in Oman, including several easily accessible trails in Muscat that offer great city views.

Better still, the amazing Wadi Shab is less than two hours from the capital city and is one of the best hikes I've ever experienced . The trail takes you through narrow gorges and across streams and ends with a surreal swim through incredible caves.

It's an experience so breathtaking I'd expected it to be packed with tourists, but it wasn't when we visited. We only saw a handful of people, which allowed us to really enjoy our trip.

I've seen many parts of Africa, but Namibia may just be my favorite spot.

travel country longwood

I have been fortunate to go on safaris in Kenya , Botswana, and Tanzania, but Namibia is my favorite travel destination of the bunch.

While there, we rented a campervan and did a self-drive tour of the country, allowing us to explore independently. Yet again, we avoided the crowds and the campsites were usually just us and local animals.

Waking up to the sounds of monkeys, elephants, and even lions was a special treat, especially knowing we were safe inside our campervan.

In addition to the wildlife, there's a lot to explore in Namibia, including colossal dunes, which we hiked up and surfed down —undoubtedly the trip highlight for my children.

Sri Lanka showcases a lot of what Asia landscapes have to offer.

travel country longwood

Asia has some beautiful beaches, but Sri Lanka has beaches and tea plantations, mountains, rocks, waterfalls, and more.

We visited Sri Lanka last year and hired a driver and guide who showcased the diverse landscapes of this island country. The food was terrific and extremely cheap — our family of four was fed for less than $10 on most occasions.

The locals I interacted with were incredibly friendly and the island is also small enough to allow for in-depth exploration in a relatively short time.

Costa Rica is an excellent place to visit in Central America.

travel country longwood

Growing up in Texas, my wife has been to Mexico many times since the state shares a border with the country. But to explore somewhere new, smaller, and in the same region, we chose to have our honeymoon in Costa Rica .

Although it's still popular, Costa Rica offers an authentic travel experience as I feel it has yet to be overrun by tourists. Like the other countries on this list, it has a diverse landscape, from white-sand beaches to rainforests to volcanoes, so there's plenty to do.

We also visited during the rainy season, so we took advantage of low crowds , low prices, and often received upgrades — and, as a bonus, it rarely rained!

U.S. restricts travel for Israel staff as Iran attack fears rise

The United States has restricted travel for its staff in Israel , as fears grow of an imminent retaliatory attack by Iran .

The U.S. embassy in Jerusalem issued a security alert Thursday restricting its employees and their family members from personal travel outside the greater Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Be’er Sheva areas until further notice “out of an abundance of caution.”

The warning comes as Israel’s military vowed it would defend the country and respond, with expectations mounting that Tehran will soon strike back for the attack on its embassy in Syria that killed a number of senior commanders. The exchanges have raised fears that the Israel-Hamas war that has devastated the Gaza Strip could escalate into a wider conflict.

Israel never claimed responsibility for the airstrike on its rival’s consulate in Damascus, but Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said earlier this week that Israel “must be punished and it shall be,” for what he considered an effective attack on Iranian soil.

The U.S. has promised support for its ally in the face of Iranian threats and worked to persuade Tehran to avoid significant escalation, but Israel has signaled its readiness for whatever retribution may be coming.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Thursday that a direct Iranian attack will require “an appropriate Israeli response” against Iran, while an Israel Defense Forces spokesperson, Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari, said that the country was “alert and highly prepared” for a variety of scenarios.

“Whoever harms us, we will harm them,” Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also said Thursday as he visited an airbase. “We are prepared to meet all of the security needs of the State of Israel, both defensively and offensively,” he added.

Netanyahu vowed Thursday that Israel was prepared for scenarios beyond Gaza.

The growing tensions in the Middle East come as Palestinians in Gaza marked somber Eid celebrations this week amid severe food shortages despite Israeli promises to allow more humanitarian aid into the enclave. White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Thursday that famine in Gaza was “imminent,” after USAID Administrator Samantha Power said a day earlier that it was “credible” to assess that famine had already begun in the territory.

More than 33,600 people have now been killed in Gaza, the enclave’s Health Ministry said, in the six months of war since the Hamas-led attack on Israel on Oct. 7, which killed an estimated 1,200 people.

The militant group’s political leader, Ismail Haniyeh, said Hamas was still seeking a cease-fire deal despite the deaths of his three sons in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza earlier this week, but talks to secure a truce and the release of remaining hostages remain deadlocked .

It remained unclear whether Iran’s retaliation would come in the form of a direct attack or through some of the web of Tehran-backed groups who have already waged attacks from Iraq, Lebanon and Yemen in recent months.

Tehran has so far avoided direct confrontation with Israel or Washington. But Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said Thursday that “legitimate defense with the aim of punishing the aggressor” was a necessity in the wake of the consulate strike, accusing Israel of targeting diplomatic premises in violation of international law, according to Iranian state-run news agency IRNA.

The Pentagon said Thursday that top U.S. commander for the Middle East, Gen. Michael “Erik” Kurilla, had moved up his trip to Israel so he could meet with Israeli military leadership and discuss “current security threats.”

President Joe Biden said Wednesday that Iran was threatening to launch a “significant attack on Israel,” and that the U.S. commitment to Israel’s security against threats from Iran and its proxies remained “ironclad” despite growing criticism from Washington of its ally’s actions in Gaza.

The White House also said Thursday that the U.S. has communicated to Iran that it had no involvement in the strike in Damascus, and warned Iran not to use this attack as a pretext to escalate further in the region, or to attack U.S. facilities or personnel.

Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei looks at the coffins of members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, in Tehran

Secretary of State Antony Blinken has held telephone conversations with his Chinese, Turkish and Saudi counterparts “to make clear that escalation is not in anyone’s interest” and that countries should urge Iran not to escalate.

“We have also engaged with European allies and partners over the past few days and urged them as well to send a clear message to Iran that escalation is not in Iran’s interest, it’s not in the region’s interest, and it’s not in the world’s interest,” spokesman Matthew Miller said Thursday .

British foreign minister David Cameron said he had made it clear to his Iranian counterpart that the Islamic Republic must not draw the Middle East into a wider conflict.

“I am deeply concerned about the potential for miscalculation leading to further violence,” Cameron said on X .

France warned its citizens Friday to “imperatively refrain from travel in the coming days to Iran, Lebanon, Israel and the Palestinian Territories.” German airline Lufthansa and its subsidiary Austrian Airlines, the only two Western carriers flying into Tehran, extended a suspension of flight to the Iranian capital.

Climate Forward

Trains are cleaner than planes, right.

The surprising carbon footprint of an Amtrak trip across America.

travel country longwood

By Hiroko Tabuchi

Recently, I did something I’ve long dreamed of. I took the train across America.

The views were majestic, particularly as we swayed through the West. The Wi-Fi was bad, and the food not much better. But I wanted to do it partly because trains are cleaner than flying.

But when I got back home and crunched the numbers, I discovered something surprising: it would have been less polluting for me to have flown.

As a climate journalist, I often fly to report my articles, but I’ve always worried about the climate cost. Flying in jets that burn a lot of fuel is probably one of the most polluting things we do. By taking a flight to report on a problem, I’m basically making that problem worse by causing tons of planet-warming emissions that are heating up our planet to dangerous extremes.

So when I started to work on a story that would involve spending time with two climate scientists at Stanford University — one who wants to rid the school of fossil fuel funding, the other fully funded by Exxon — I wondered whether I could try something different.

What if I traveled from New York to Stanford by train, a method of transportation that generally has a far smaller climate footprint ?

The most direct route was to take the Lake Shore Limited train to Chicago, then the California Zephyr from Chicago to Emeryville, Calif., just outside San Francisco.

That 3,400-mile journey would take a daunting 72 hours. But I convinced my editors to let me use a work day, plus a few vacation days, to take the trip.

I was set. And I was doing my part to save the planet. Right?

Wrong. In short, I took a train across America and ended up emitting more planet-warming emissions, not less. I’ll explain why in just a bit.

The journey itself was epic . I boarded a packed train at New York Penn Station and was quickly speeding along the Hudson River at sunset. After a train change in Chicago, and traversing Iowa and Nebraska, we reached the Colorado Rockies. Our ascent from the flat plains to the green forests, then through the snow-capped Rockies, the deserts of Utah and the panoramic Sierra Nevada, was nothing short of magical.

A view of Hiroko Tabuchi’s legs and feet as she sits in the train. She is wearing light gray pants and black shoes.

It was also a slog. A sleeper cabin would have cost more than $2,000, so I was in an upright seat the entire trip. (Compression socks helped.) That still cost $600, about the same price flying the same route would have cost during the holiday season. I’d heard that the dining car was expensive, so I brought along vegetable sticks, crackers, cheese, hummus, instant noodles and miso soup. I tried to work on the Lake Shore Limited, but the Wi-Fi was down. There was no internet at all on the California Zephyr.

But then I did the math on my emissions.

A nonstop flight from New York to San Francisco emits, on average, about 840 pounds of carbon dioxide per economy class passenger, according to Google Flights, whose data is independently reviewed . That’s equivalent to burning 420 pounds of coal, or more than the annual emissions of someone living in Cameroon. Air travel is wildly polluting.

But what about trains? I tracked down several estimates of carbon emissions per passenger-mile, including Amtrak’s official estimate. What I got back: My cross-country train journey had emitted somewhere from 950 to 1,133 pounds of carbon dioxide per passenger.

There are a few reasons for this result. Amtrak is far cleaner than flying where its tracks are electrified, along the Northeast Corridor, from Washington to Boston. But outside the Northeast, Amtrak trains run on diesel, a highly polluting fuel.

What’s more, Amtrak’s trains are decades old. (Its single-level Amfleet cars were built in the late 1970s.) Add to that generous seat pitches, large old-fashioned private rooms for longer-distance trains, a longer, winding route across the country and “per-passenger-mile emissions go through the roof,” said Justin Roczniak , a co-host of “Well There’s Your Problem,” a podcast about engineering.

Amtrak is still the more climate-friendly option for the vast majority of travelers, who on average travel 300 to 400 miles, said Olivia Irvin, a spokeswoman for the rail company. (That is, not many people are crazy enough to go cross-country by train.) A 2022 Department of Transportation study found that traveling by train from Los Angeles to San Diego generated less than half the emissions , per passenger, of flying, or driving. For Boston to New York, an electrified route, taking the train generated less than a fifth the emissions of flying or driving.

travel country longwood

It’s when journeys start getting longer than about 700 miles that planes start to gain an advantage on trains. Planes burn the most fuel when they take off and climb to altitude. That makes short flights very inefficient — you’re burning all that fuel only to travel a short distance. (Some countries, like France and Spain , have tried to ban the shortest flights when rail alternatives are available.)

Longer flights also tend to use larger aircraft, which provide economies of scale. And aircraft have become more fuel-efficient over the years. But choosing flights with several connections, for example, can quickly add to your footprint, because you’re taking off and landing multiple time

Flights for the same route can differ in terms of emissions by a factor of three, according to Dan Rutherford, director of research at the International Council on Clean Transportation, who advises Google on its flight emissions calculations. And comparing air and train travel can be tricky: Amtrak does not provide emissions estimates for different seat classes. Airplanes also emit other pollution like nitrogen oxides and soot, and form contrails , all of which warm the planet further.

And experts agree that aviation is going to be one of the hardest industries to decarbonize. With trains, electrification is already readily available. The technology is there. China, for example, has managed to electrify 70 percent of its train lines over the past decades and made them faster, too. And as the electric grid gets cleaner by adding more solar and wind, so will trains that run on electricity from that grid.

An electric, long-distance passenger plane is much further in our future.

Whether Amtrak will ever electrify outside of the Northeast corridor is another question, however. In America, tracks are owned by freight companies, which have resisted electrification. (Freight trains are also why some Amtrak trains stop frequently to make way. And all that stopping and starting makes America’s passenger trains even less energy-efficient.) Amtrak is currently updating its fleet with newer diesel trains, albeit ones that are less polluting and slightly faster.

One thing I did learn during my cross-country train journey: There are still a lot of Americans who love trains. The trains I took were booked solid. Among my fellow travelers were a college student traveling to see her long-distance boyfriend, and grandparents on a family trip (but they didn’t want to travel by car with their grandchildren).

But would I travel cross-country by train again? Probably not, unless Amtrak electrified the route. We can only dream.

More climate news

Only 57 oil, gas, coal and cement producers accounted for 80 percent of global fossil fuel carbon emissions in the last decade, a new report reviewed by Axios shows .

The Biden administration’s $7.5 billion investment in electric car charging has only produced seven stations in two years, The Washington Post reports .

Most of the European Union’s embattled farming subsidies go to meat and dairy products, researchers reported in The Conservation .

An earlier version of this newsletter stated incorrectly the train’s route after leaving Chicago. It traversed Iowa and Nebraska, not Indiana and Nebraska.

An earlier version of this newsletter also described incorrectly the pollution from airplanes. It contains nitrogen oxides, not nitrogen.

Built on a Love for Outdoor Adventure

travel country longwood

On the road with Don and Jane Plante There’s really only one place for us to start: back on the road with Don and Jane Plante, the enterprising and creative couple who first purchased Travel Country in 1969, when the store was in the business of selling motor homes. The Plante’s stuck to selling RVs for about a decade, right up until the gas crunch of the early ‘80s prompted them to transition from selling motor homes into outdoor retail, which fit the family like a glove—a really, really good-fitting glove.

From Winnebagos to Wilderness Systems You see, for years Don and Jane Plante carved 45 days out of each summer to take their four kids, Larry, Mike, Steve and Susan, on the road in their Winnebago for summer vacation. To the kids, these trips were a ticket to absolute adventure. There were cool nights spent by open fires, tiny trout pulled from babbling creeks, limitless hiking trails to be explored … Heck! Even naps taken along Winnebago Way could earn the kids a nickel each; and five naps could be conveniently converted to one whole game of pinball back at the campground—and just whatcould be better? But as good as it all might sound, perhaps even better than any of this was what the kids would one day take away from these trips: a relationship with and reverence for the natural world that they would carry with them—always.

So in 1986 when Don gave his youngest sons, Mike and Steve, the opportunity to run the store, they took to the challenge like the young Yvon Chouinard took to the sandstone cliffs of California’s Stoney Point. Much like Yvon had realized early on, that the soft iron pitons climbers were using couldn’t sustain a new era of climbing, Mike and Steve realized that the outdoor industry was evolving and becoming far more specialized than the wares that were being offered by many standard-style army/navy supply stores.

Because of this: a penchant for insight and an endless involvement with and true passion for the outdoors, Mike and Steve, together with an extended network of family and friends, have built something that’s so much more than a store. It’s a legacy really, a testament to family, to memories, to absolute adventure, and to all those roads left to travel.
