You will also pay more for peak season, which leads to less privacy. In July of 2021 alone, an estimated 3.4-million international visitors came to Mexico. This seasonal influx will inevitably create larger crowds, less availability, and higher hotel rates.

From September to May, you will enjoy lower prices due to less demand, cooler days, and lower humidity. Fall, Winter, and Spring months are still warm enough to enjoy the outdoors because Mexico’s temperature is moderate year-round (generally 50-90 degrees).

Some locals feel the best time to visit is January in the heart of dry season when the white sandy beaches are vacant and the ancient ruins are quiet. Although the climate is heavenly, keep in mind that higher rates may carry over during popular holidays (December: Christmas; January: New Year; March: Spring Break).

Ultimately, there is no wrong time to visit Mexico, only the time that best suits your needs.

Mexico has many diverse regions and climates (warm beaches, snowy mountains, volcanoes, steamy jungles, etc.), so the weather conditions completely depend on where you visit. The overall climate is tropical and rainy, with mild temperature fluctuations between seasons.

Summer will always be a fantastic time to visit Mexico, and the weather will remain around 90-95°F during the day, dropping to 60-70°F by night. It rains about 175 days per year in Mexico, but usually in small drizzles, and the average annual humidity is approximately 70%. The rainy season in Central America is generally May to October, sometimes extending through late Autumn.

Be sure to check the local forecast before you go. Visitors can take note of the Caribbean’s hurricane season, running from June to November; This may not be the safest time to plan a family trip.

However, bear in mind that Mexico is a little over 2,000 miles long from North to South, and certain forms of transportation will be more difficult than others (for example, if you’re taking a non-stop bus from Mexico City to Tijuana, it will be your cheapest option but it will also take 2-3 days).

Find the best option for you while keeping in mind that public transportation may be a bit overwhelming if you do not speak Spanish.

• Metrobús – A cheap and crowded way to move about the cities (typically $0.30 or so each way [5-6 pesos]). There have been reports of female harassment and groping on public buses, so many stations offer women-only buses.
• Metro (Train) – The second most-affordable mode of transportation, a train will also be crowded and provide the front 2 cars for women and children only.
• Tourist Buses – Double-decker buses in major hubs like Mexico City that will run 12 hours a day, stopping at major attractions.
• Taxi or Uber – Probably the most popular options for tourists. If you are staying at a resort, the concierge can schedule and order taxis on your behalf, ensuring it is a safe and trusted company.
• Rental Cars – Although they are available at most international airports, driving yourself in Mexico is ill-advised. The traffic is congested and drivers do not often follow the rules, making it an unsafe and difficult country to maneuver as a foreigner. What plug is used in Mexico?

The Mexican plug types are Type A and Type B — the same types you find in the USA and Canada, but not the ones from Europe, Australia and Asia.

Plug Type A has two flat parallel pins, and plug Type B has an extra round earth pin for grounding. The Type B plug is common in Mexico outlets.

If you’re from the USA or Canada, your devices will most likely plug in just fine since we use the same plug types in Mexico (and most of North America).

Power Outlets in Mexico

What is a polarized plug.

Polarization involves having one of the two pins on a plug slightly larger than the other, and with a rounded edge that pin.

This design ensures the plug can only be inserted into a wall outlet in one specific way.

While in Canada and the USA, devices must be polarized to reduce the electrical shock hazard, many Mexican outlets are not polarized (especially in older, historic areas).

This means that although Mexico outlets are the same as USA and Canada, many travelers bring a universal travel power adapter like this one just in case!

Living in Mexico since 2018, I’ve heard MANY horror stories of devices getting fried from power surges — so I now advise the Better Safe Than Sorry approach.

What is the difference between Type A and Type B plugs?

The difference between Type A and Type B electrical plugs lies in their design and safety features, which are tailored to fit compatible outlets. 

• Type A Plug = 2 flat parallel pins
• Type B Plug = 2 flat parallel pins with an extra round grounding pin, meaning Type B has three-prongs versus two-prongs

Type A plugs are more versatile because you can use Type A plug with both kinds of outlet sockets; those with two openings and those with three openings.

Type B plugs can only be used with Type B outlets. This makes it a bit more difficult for you to find and use compatible electrical outlets in Mexico.

If you have a Type B plug on the devices you’re packing for Mexico, I recommend bringing this Type B to Type A US to Mexico Power Adapter .

Think of this adapter as an inexpensive insurance policy because many Mexican outlets don’t have the extra grounding pin that helps keep your devices safe.

Voltage and Frequency in Mexico

When traveling to Mexico, it’s important to know that the standard voltage supply is 127V, with a frequency of 60Hz .

This is similar to the United States and Canada, which also both use 120V and 60Hz.

The similarity means travelers from these countries won’t need to worry about voltage differences for their electronic devices, and there’s no need for a voltage converter.

If you’re coming from regions where the standard voltage is between 220V and 240V, like Europe, Asia and Australia, check your devices to see if they’re dual-voltage.

Dual-voltage means they’re capable of working with BOTH 110V and 220V supplies. If they aren’t, you’ll need this voltage converter .

Of course, you’ll also need to bring a travel adapter if your plugs themselves aren’t Type A or Type B.

Do I need a voltage converter in Mexico?

Whether you need a voltage converter in Mexico depends on the voltage requirements of your devices, and the country you’re coming from.

If your devices aren’t dual-voltage, and you’re from a region with a standard voltage of 220V-240V — YES , you will need a voltage converter like this one .

Without one, you will not be able to use your devices in Mexico safely. In fact, they could short out and fry, or even explode in your hand 💥 so don’t risk it!

⚠️ Note: A voltage converter can go by several other names, like international power converter, international voltage converter, transformer, and/or voltage adapter.

How do you know if a device has dual voltage?

Look for a label or a marking on your device or its power supply that says 100-240V, 50/60Hz.

If it has this marking, your device is dual voltage and will adapt to Mexico’s voltage without a converter.

If not, a converter like this one is necessary to prevent damage for devices that do not support Mexico’s 127V, and are from countries with higher voltages.

You will need to consider what to pack, to ensure you can use your personal electrical appliances safely whilst abroad. This normally includes the use of a  travel adaptor , which is a device that simply allows you to plug any UK electrical appliance into a foreign electrical socket. It is important to note that it does not convert the voltage or frequency.

For Mexico there are two associated plug types, types A and B. Plug type A is the plug which has two flat parallel pins and plug type B is the plug which has two flat parallel pins and a grounding pin. Mexico operates on a 127V supply voltage and 60Hz.

Voltage converters and transformers

Electricity supplies worldwide can vary from anything between 100V and 240V. It can be extremely dangerous to use an electrical appliance that is rated at a voltage different from the supply.

As voltage can differ from country to country, you may need to use a voltage converter or transformer whilst in Mexico. If the frequency is different, the normal operation of an electrical appliance may also be affected. For example, a 50Hz clock may run faster on a 60Hz electricity supply.  Most voltage converters and transformers come supplied with plug adaptors, so you may not need to buy a separate travel adaptor.

All converters and transformers will have a maximum power rating (AMPS or WATTS) so make sure that any appliance you intend to use does not exceed this rating.

Dual voltage rated appliance

You can determine whether you’ll need to use a converter or transformer, by looking at the appliance rating plate.

A dual voltage rated appliance will display for example ‘INPUT: 110-240V’ on the body of the appliance or its power supply. This means that you will not need a converter or transformer but just a travel adaptor, because Mexico operates on a 127V supply voltage, which is within the 110-240V range that the dual voltage appliance operates on.

Single voltage rated appliances

In Mexico the supply voltage is 127V. If the appliance or its power supply are not dual voltage rated, the single voltage appliance will have to be used alongside a voltage transformer or converter to allow the appliance to work safely and properly (unless the appliance operates at 127V).

It is likely you will only find plugs-type "G" in the UK. Plugs type "D" and "M" are considered "old" and not common. They are are still used nowadays to differentiate low-power lighting circuits. So please don't try to use an adapter on them for high-power equipments like hair-dryer or even battery chargers. We keep "D" and "M" plugs in our database as we don't know your exact destination and you might find one next to a bed table. As a rule of thumb , you will probably be fine with the type "G" in hotels and big cities.

Take care: Mexico uses lower voltage than United Kingdom

Your electric devices from United Kingdom will be expecting 230 Volts, but Mexico grid is of 127 Volts, this is a substantial difference that requires you to take some extra steps in preparation to your trip:

On the positive side , nowadays many devices will switch automatically to the network voltage and they will work just fine, i.e. mobile phone chargers are typically multi-voltage (but please, do actually check your own). It is important that you pay attention to your device's voltage. Connecting electronics to the wrong voltage, in the luckiest of the cases, the device will break or stop working temporarily; but please don't take this lightly , in the worst of the cases electrocution and fire hazards are a real possibility .

High-power devices don't usually handle different voltages due to the high-currents involved i.e. anything that its main purpose involves generating heat (or cold) like hair driers, baby bottle warmers, kettles, etc. On the contrary, modern low-power devices are likely to auto-detect and auto-adapt to different voltages i.e. usb chargers, laptop chargers, etc.

You will need a step down voltage converter a device that can be plugged to 127 volts and it provides an outlet with 230 volts for your United Kingdom' device. You will need to pay attention to the maximum power output of the converter and the maximum power consumption of the device.

This is not a big issue. Unless you are using an electric alarm clock or some motors when speed is an issue. Explanation: Some alarm clocks uses the frequency of electricity network to measure time. So, time shifts could be experimented. Almost every home electronic device works perfectly with different Hertz.

Do your power plugs fit in Mexico?
